This professor is so easy! Do the tutorials (which are explained in the book) and the tests come straight from the powerpoints. Study well and you won't have anything to worry about! Don't need to come to class unless there is something to turn in. EASY A!! MUST TAKE for computer info systems.
If you want to sit through a class that at the end you will want to shoot yourself from boardum. She will put you to sleep with her boring powerpoints and monotone voice. If you decide to not go to class be prepared to miss an inclass assignment. she is very annoying and the class will make you want to shoot yourself in the foot to stay awake.
Her tests are hard, but the turtorials are easy. She doesn't take attendance but she has inclass assignments on random days, so its always good to go just in case.
Class is really boring, but simple. 3 exams, many Access/Frontpage assigments, no attendance, some in class assignments. She teaches from PowerPoints all class/everyday. She is a nice person and easy-going, but she also has a extremely boring voice that will put you to sleep. Professor should have majored in becoming a Sleep Therapist.
I thought she was a great teacher. Yeah sometimes boring,..requires a lot of out of class work time. Teaches from powerpoints all the time, and she always has those posted on blackboard, so if your smart you dont need to go, no attendance policy. She is a super nice lady and is very helpful and understading if your having problems....TAKE HER
Yea she might be a nice lady, wanting to help you, but her tests are ridiculous. You can study the text and slides for hours and it wont do anythiing. I really woulnt recomend her because i heard tehre is a cob 204 teacher that you dont even have to show up for class and you can get an A
Incredibly boring, monotone voice which would put almost anyone to sleep. I sat (literally) front and center and still had a hard time paying attention. If you can put up with that however she is a fairly easy teacher. She has powerpoint slides for each lecture and gives review sheets for tests. Tutorials aren't too bad; projects a bit tougher.
very easy. i went to class about half the time, adn when in class just zoned out instead of listenting to her go on and on and put the class to sleep. but i still walked out w/ an A, all u gotta do is study the power points. still if u can find one less boring go for it.
Extremely nice lady! Class is kind of boring, but what can you expect from a CIS class? Very clear and helpful, always willing to help during office hours. Seems to really care about her students!! I would definitely recommend her.
She's a really awesome lady. She's laid back and enjoys teaching the students, even if it isn't the most exciting material at times. She definitely seems to care about helping students, but if you don't go to class you'll miss in-class assignments that can help you learn the material. The class was a little monotonous though.
Boring class, she is nice though. The access/front page assignments should have been worth more grade wise. Test are so/so. She does give extra credit to help ya out near the end. I have no clue how I got an A (must have been the extra credit). The homework is stupid, but she gives one each week...ok to miss a few cuz they aren't worth much.
take mrs. atkins!! she is a great professor, explains things clearly, no attendance policy, lots of inclass/out of class worksheets that are very easy, little to no reading required for the class, just come to class and you will be fine..annoying access projects but they are great grade boosters..definitely recommend her!!
Really nice lady. Always willing to help out. I wasn't too interested in this class coming in but I'm enjoying it so much I've actually decided to minor in CIS! Lots of graded worksheets you can do pretty mindlessly and that really boost your grade. I recommend her!
Great teacher. Fairly boring class but she gives out a lot of easy in class work sheets. 2 pretty easy projects (front page and access) and 2 tests. She puts all her power points up on blackboard too. She is also really nice.
great prof!! very friendly and explains the topics clearly, class is pretty interesting, no attendance but gives out easy homework worksheets during class for a grade, 3 tests including finals and assignments for microsoft access and frontpage(webpage developing software) definitely recommend!!
Not too bad of a teacher. Some lectures get really boring, but the access and front page stuff is easy. Tests aren't easy but not impossible. Just regular 50 ques scantron. She's really nice. My advice is take her
Lectures can get very boring, but she's sweet, friendly and concise. Straightforward MC tests, easy tutorials, go to class because she hands out graded worksheets randomly. Tries to make this really boring subject applicable to COB.
take her. she is great.
her class is very boring but it is an easy a. Just go to class and do all of the assignments and you will be fine. May need some caffeine to stay awake in class but overall glad i took her.
Never in my life have i met a teacher that was so boring. Honestly, watching water boil is more fun than her class. Her class teaches you absolutely nothing. I have friends that are in other CIS classes and they are all passing. Atkins tests are harder than they should be...honestly, find another teacher that actually cares about you as a student.
The tests aren't as easy as you would think. Read the book, don't just go to class. If you read carefully, you don't even need to go to class. Access tutorials and project make up a good portion of your grade and they're easy. Take her she's very nice and extra credit is offered.
She is boring but her tests come straight from the power points. The tests are difficult but study and you will get B's. Other assignments are easy, just do them and this class will be one of your higher grades for the semester.
very nice. very willing to help. tries to apply it to real like aspects so can understand subject. does get a little boring at times but its partly the subject. study for test and will do fine. are not bad. No attendance policy really. if need help just ask and she will. have sharepoing assignments and project but so does everyother cob 204 class
Very nice lady. Class can be really boring, but most T/TR classes are. Tests are very easy, just read your book and study the powerpoints. I got a 94 and a 96 and an A on exam. Homework was always really easy, and if you did mess up, she took a fraction of a point off. She was very willing to help, though you likely won't need it.
Easy professor. Tests are mostly definitions and the access & sharepoint assignments are pretty straight-forward. I would advise going to class; though its not mandatory, participation is 5% of your grade (and she will call on you even if you're not there). Take her, she's one of better ones.
Very nice and understanding professor. Grades are spread out between 2 tests and a final, access and sharepoint homework, and participation. Very easy to get a B in the class, and not impossible to get an A. I would recommend her, she is a great teacher.
She's a nice teacher, wants to help her students, and wants to see them succeed. Unfortunately, the class is mandatory attendance bc she gives little 5pt assignments most days and its a tough class to sit through. I suggest taking her though she is probably the best professor at JMU for her subject.
She is a very helpful teacher who really has the students best interests at heart. As far as the work goes there are 3 tests, a final, and 2 projects (the same projects required for all 204 classes). She isn't the most interesting, but she is such a sweet heart and always willing to help during office hours. I would definitely recommend taking her!
boing class, bunch of in class asgt's so you should show up even though attendance is not required. randomly calls on students for your "participation grade" if u cant answer the question you loose points. nice lady.tests are not bad. extra credit is given. pretty easy class overall
She seems pretty nice but whenever I approached her with a question she didn't appear to be all too friendly. I couldn't tell if she just didn't like me or what. I think she teaches okay, but she'd probably be a lot better if the subject itself wasn't so boring.
Lots of assignments to boost your grade. Attendance is not mandatory but there are in-class assignments which count as participation grades. Tests are multiple choice. Departmental final. Boring class but easy A
HATED her class. She randomly calls on you to answer questions in class. Had no expression on her face.
Very boring class. Puts slides up on blackboard. Studied a lot for her tests and only got in the low 80's. Sharepts. annoying. Not very approachable. Class isn't mandatory. Class feels like it'll never end...There are probably better 204 professors out there.
EVERY 204 class does the access project/sharepoint things, and those are the hardest part of the corse. putting those aside, this class is fantastic! attendance isn't mandatory, but going is helpful. she clearly states anything she doesn't put on her power points won't be on the test so tests are easy and straightforward. TAKE HER!
class is boring unless you are into that kind of stuff. the access assignments are easy and share point is a waist of time, she is the only one who counts it none of the other professors do so only the people who have her and are in your group do any of the share point work
class is boring. access assignments are easy and share point is a waist of time. she is the only one who counts it none of the other professors do.
Lectures are boring but what can you do if you are not interested in CIS. Besides that, best and one of the easiest professors lecturing COB 204
Atkins is a kind woman, she gives out extra credit for participation. The tests follow the book, the book is lectured about in class. Little quizzes on random chapters, notice is given for all graded assignments. Randomly collects inclass work for participation points. Overall, great teacher!!
Take this teacher. Her class lectures are boring but her tests are really easy, especially if you read the textbook. Class isnt mandatory but you could miss in class assignment that she counts as a grade so try not to miss. She's also really helpful if you email her any questions you have for the test or access
This is a boring class. She is nice though. And she seems to be passionate about computer information systems. I would say, she is a good professor for this class that you are going to have to take anyway.
Not a hard class, so shes not a hard teacher. Extremely boring unless you are a computer nerd. Study the guide she gives for the test and no reason not to get an A. I did not even study and managed to get a A- due to getting 100% on Access. recommend
Class is not hard, assignments are not hard, tests not too hard, but very boring class and I hated it. Atkins is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had and there is no reason not to at least pull off a B+ - A in this class
This class is really easy. The test are easy and Professor Atkins and really nice and cool. If there is something that you don't understand then just go to office hours and she will explain it to you. Defintely take her for COB 204!
Very boring class but she is a very nice and sweet teacher. The class is relatively easy minus the access assignments but she helps a lot with those. If you have to take this class take her.
Professor Atkins is an amazing professor! The class itself is pretty easy, but she makes class really interesting and interactive. She is super passionate about what she teaches. She is EXTREMELY helpful outside of class. I would highly recommend her for 204!!
Apparently she had changed this class. She gives very poor instructions and then destroys your grade when you don't do things you weren't asked to. Also, the project is confusing and has little to do with the material learned. The final is almost impossible and one person finished. Good luck.
Professor Atkins is such a nice teacher. She is 100% willing to help you during office hours, tests and assignments are straight forward and relatively easy. Easy A or B if you try. DO NOT MISS ASSIGNMENTS. Only reason I got a B is because I missed in class assignments. TAKE HER! Best COB Professor by far!
Professor Atkins is one of the best professors I've had at JMU. She is always on time, friendly, a great lecturer, and applies the material to real life situations. She is very supportive and reasonable. Take her if you want to learn and if you are looking for a good grade!
Atkins is alright. Class isnt mandatory but I skipped a few and missed in class assignments which brought my grade down significantly from silly easy assignments. She is nice but her lectures are so boring and she doesnt explain well. Tests are hard
Nice teacher. Super boring class. Her tests are hard and worded funny. If you miss in class assignments it drops your grade pretty low. I dreaded going to this class. She barely responds to emails
Class is boring, yet she's a nice woman. Class isn't mandatory but you will miss a lot of little in class assignments which can drop your grade down.
She is such a nice lady, but unless you're super into CIS, this class is going to be boring. It's important to show up to class so you get points from participation assignments. Tests are really difficult, and involve a lot of outside work for studying. She is very helpful and wants students to succeed, but you have to speak up if you need help.
Tough class, makes you work for it. tests are very hard need to read the book to do well on them. Microsoft access is a big part of the class and the assignments aren't very clear. Overall a challenging but rewarding class, would recommend as a major course.
Tough Class, Tests are very hard and make you study nights before in order to pass. Definitely easier COB 204 professors out there
The only hard part I found from the class were the tests, everything else was pretty easy. She does very little to prepare you for tests unless you use office hours to ask specific questions. The tests themselves are a lot harder than you would think, even after memorizing practically all the slidesreading the book. Easy B-, not so easy B and up.
Lectures are super boring, and tests are hard... but the course is not too bad! Atkins is an alright teacher, put in some effort and a B won't be too hard!
This was the worst class this semester. The access assignments are impossible, I stayed up until 3 am doing them, and if you fail them like I did, your grade will suffer. Ms. Atkins seems like a nice lady until you go to her for help and she makes you feel like an idiot without actually helping anything except making you shake. Never again.
Atkins really is a nice lady, but the tests are impossible. All content learned in class seems straight forward and then you see things on the tests you've never seen before. Makes you feel stupid when you ask her for help in office hours, too. Without the tests I would have had a 98% in this class, instead I have an 84%.
Professor Atkins is very nice, helpful, and the class was pretty interesting. The first test was kind of tough, but she curved it. The other two tests and the final I got A's on by studying her powerpoints w my notes and making flashcards. Put in the effort in Access assignments and studying for the tests and you can easily get an A.
Her class can be boring kinda often but she is a good teacher. Her lectures can be confusing sometimes but she's very helpful in office hours. There's only 2 exams and a final, which are all tough but if you get really good grades in the classwork and projects then your almost guaranteed a B
I know there are mixed reviews for Prof. Atkins but I thought she was a good professor and enjoyed her class. She knows her stuff, and will do her best to help you on the Access assignments which can be tricky. During lectures there's always time to ask questions. Tests can be hard so make sure to study a lot. I def got a lot out of her class
Very interesting topics that relate directly to current technological improvement. Class a bit boring. Tests are hard. She really enjoys the subject.
Laura is not a good teacher. She is nice but cannot teach and when she does it does not match up with her tests. The tests were impossible, if you get a C on them you are lucky. I went to her for office hours and she makes you feel completely dumb. She is the worst professor I've had by far.
Most people don't like her but I am enjoying her class. Access assignments are not too bad and she grades them fairly. There are only 2 tests and the final. 1st test is extremely hard but she curves it (got a 74), 2nd test I worked harder and got a 92! The in class collab assignments get a bit annoying but if you have a good group it is do-able.
Professor Atkins class was one of my favorites this semester. There are two tests and a final which are not as hard as people make them out to be, you just have to pay attention in class. The book is pretty essential since there are parts she tells you to read that will be on quizzes and test (go figure). Taking her again next semester in CIS221
Professor Atkins is a very good professor who wants her students to learn. As long as you do the work you are fine. The tests are hard and requires a good amount of studying. The only problem is that some group projects are hard but they are worth like 10 points. They should be worth more because of the work needed. Overall the class was good.
She's really sweet and tries to be as helpful as possible but her explanations are not very clear. This was a hard class, but I went to office hours at least twice a week and ended up with a B. No +/_ on the grading scale for this class
She doesn't care about her students, she is Unwilling to help students that need it. I even got points off for accidentally asking a question that was on her syllabus, who is pretentious and self centered enough to do that; she was actually offended that I asked a question she slaved over typing on a piece of paper. She gives cob/jmu a bad name.
Test and coding project due every two weeks. Slides have blanks that you fill in during lecture, make sure to show up so you can stay on track. Tests mostly pull from powerpoints and examples in the workbook. Coding projects can be a huge hassle, be sure to make friends in class so when you get stuck you'll have someone to help you.
Personally I thought the exams were very hard compared to the programming assignments. Luckily there's like 6 of each. Lectures are very help and you will need the book for her weekly quizzes which are hard but do-able. Sweet lady though.
Professor Atkins is extremely helpful and really wants you to understand the material. Really need to go to class in order to pass as she has in class activities that help you understand programming. Tests are easy as long as you show up and read the textbook. 6 tests and a few programming classes. Easy A if you put the effort in.
She gives vague assignment instructions then takes off points for things she never specified. Gives no partial credit. If she doesn't like how you received the final result (even if it is exactly what she asked for) she will give you no credit. Get ready to teach yourself because she doesn't. Tests are coding, long, stressful.
Useless teacher. Class isn't difficult but be prepared to teach yourself everything since shes pretty clueless on Python. 6 python assignments, 7 exams, and a whole semester of useless lectures. Get another professor if possible if you actually want to get something out of 221 other than a grade and textbook. Textbook is online for free btw.
I had her for 204 and was an easy class. 366 is a little more challenging. She is a bit picky with the grading on the hw assignments and the exams present a challenge because of the time constraint. Be sure to attend class bc part of the exam is open everything so if you do the in class work you can easily get points on the coding portion of exams
Atkins isn't the greatest lecturer, but she's a really sweet lady and wants to help you out. Programming assignments take time, but there's a lot of them (and a lot of tests) so the grades aren't worth that much each.
there were 6 tests and 6 programming assignments. the exams and programming assignments are 10x harder than anything you do in class so make sure to get close with people in your class or know someone that took it before to help you. she says tests arent accumulative but everything builds off each other so you need a good foundation.
I don't think Atkin is a bad professor. Python sucks and you have to put in a lot of work to complete the programming assignments. She is extremely fair and changed my grades if I spoke to her about points docked for things. She also would let everyone retake certain questions on tests if they were missed a lot. She is very helpful outside of class
Prof Atkins really wants you to do well, and is very reasonable. The programming assignments can get frustrating, especially the later ones. It's very possible to well, you just have to put in the time. Programming is a new way of thinking, its hard no matter what. Go see her if you need help.
Professor Atkins is amazing! She is very reasonable and helpful during class and outside of class. There were a few tests that had a multiple choice part and a development part. No quizzes, but a few homework assignments that can be used to help you during the development part of the tests.
I loved Atkins! I have never programmed before and she made it super easy to understand. You must read the textbook and do the examples she gives you and in the book. The programming assignments can get difficult, but she helps you so much if you go to office hours. If you want to do well, you have to put in the effort, but it is 100% worth it.
Professor Atkins is awesome! The programming assignments can be challenging, but she explains everything you would need to know for them in class. Tests aren't too bad either. If you go to class, pay attention, and start the PA's early, you will do fine! She is also very accommodating and helpful outside of class.
If you have any interest in coding, take her. I learned so much and she made it interesting! We practiced a lot in class and she repeated topics so that we would learn them better. She does call on people in class so make sure to pay attention. However, she didn't get frustrated when students were clueless on what to do.
She does a good job at explaining coding and goes over a lot of examples in class from the workbook. She will call on people in class, so pay attention because she gets annoyed when people don't know what's going on. She helps a lot with the programming assignments. Do the work, study for exams and you will be fine.
This was the first CIS class I took besides COB 204. You need to keep up with due dates, even if taking it during a pandemic. Some knowledge on programming would be helpful going into the class. Atkins is helpful, but will not tell you what you are doing wrong because she expects you will figure it out. Class can be frustrating for new coders.
I enjoyed going to class everyday. The class was difficult at sometimes but Atkins is helpful if you show you are putting in the effort. Just stay on top of things and study power points for the tests.
Avoid this class. Got an A in 221, 331, and 484, and I got a low B in this class. This class is unnecessarily difficult for no reason. She's a tough grader and doesn't give clear instructions. Also boring.
Had her for 221 and somewhat enjoyed her so I thought I'd take 366 with her. Horrible decision. We have practices which are practices for a reason... not mandatory. However, one day very few did it so she made us turn it in for a grade. Seems to just always been in a horrible mood. Do not recommend for 366! Makes class harder than necessary.
100% the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures consist of her teaching very basic Python, just for every assignment to be on college-level Python and graded brutally. Lectures are NEVER relevant to what is due and when you ask her any relevant question, she "doesn't want to talk about that yet". Instructions on assignments are always unclear.
Where do I start.... Do not take this professor and don't be fooled by the people that gave her good feedback they must be on something and whatever they got I want. This teacher grades everything not enough practice. I go to office hours and only get 5 minutes to talk with her. If I had a better teacher I'd have an A+. To sum up, don't pick her!
Prof. Atkins is your best bet for CIS 221. She's a very nice lady who gives good lectures. Only con of her class is the programming assignments. They often require programming knowledge that hasn't been covered in lectures yet and are graded very specifically. Class grades are weighted nicely and she is generous with test grading.
Although there were quite a few (group) hw assignments and individual projects. They really help you understand the material you're learning in class. I was hesitant ab learning Python bc I don't like programming but I had an amazing time in this class. GO TO OFFICE HOURS and talk with her after class. She enjoys feedback and wants you to succeed!
I had the best experience in this class. She is always prepared and such a sweet person. If you are struggling don't feel scared to ask a question in class. She makes sure you're paying attention but honestly, it really helps in the long run. Tutoring was offered once a week and also helped tremendously. Would take an class with her in a heartbeat!
If you don't want to actually learn then don't take the class. Programming is like learning another language so if you don't start studying in the beginning you're not going to do well rest of the class. I have a C average for the tests and an A average for the programming assignments and have a B plus currently. Just ask for help when needed.
Professor Atkins is a good professor for the material. Sometimes she seems like she does not have it together. I think she takes too long to teach one subject but I think you either get the material or you dont and I understood it. She was very accommodating to a partner assignment when I went to her with issues.
If you take learning to code python seriously, you will pass. Atkins is pretty good at explaining things and answering questions. Group work and programming projects every few weeks. Quiz at beginning of every unit. It's not an easy class but her assignments prepare you well. Take notes, read textbook, and take hw seriously and you'll do fine.
I enjoyed Professor Atkins's class. HTML and CSS can be a little tricky but if you're viewing the lectures and doing the practices you'll get in it in no time. She seems very caring and responds relatively quickly when you have a question about the homework.
I was excited to start my CIS minor, until I had about a week of this class. Atkins is always in a bad mood, nearly fell asleep a few times, Youtube videos/ChatGPT could teach you better, the workbook sucks and does nothing but convolute your coding knowledge. Test are unnecessisarily complicated. Gets upset when students leave the room, avoid her.
Professor Atkins is a nice woman but I didn't love the structure of this class. I felt like we spent a lot of time on unimportant things and not enough time on better topics. The quizzes were way too difficult, but the assignments and tests are reasonable where you can keep your grade up. This class isn't bad but it wouldn't be my first choice
Weekly homeworks and PAs which is time consuming, but if you keep up from the beginning of the course and study, you will do great in her class. I wouldn't recommend skipping her class because you can miss so much, but if you go to her office hours, she is very helpful! Try not to get behind!!
Her elective class is very interesting, hard, but worth it. I would 100% recommend taking her elective because she is so helpful and she makes sure everyone is on the same page.
Professor Atkins is a pretty good instructor, though her class can be challenging. Attend lectures, take notes, and use resources like the textbook and unstuck study for study prep. The assignments are graded strictly, but the work helps you learn Python. Overall, a worthwhile class if you put in the effort.
She's the WOAT, might be the most uninteresting, boring, and tedious teachers ive ever had the displeasure of experiencing. Barely posts any review material before the tests and hands out assignments like candy. Try to get another teacher to save yourself and your grade.
Overall she is a decent professor. In my opinion she explained the concepts pretty well. We did not have a textbook but had a workbook which we did majority of practice in. There are programming assignments that you need to spend some time on and other homework assignments which help prepare you for tests. Would recommend.
Class was overly difficult. Material is already foreign and she doesn't make it helpful to learn. She is a rough grader with homework, and the tests are very hard. Very little material to use to study for exams but she is helpful if you reach out to her.
