She is the worst. She tries to make you feel stupid. She reads everything from the book. She has the most annoying shrilling voice. Not a good pick for a professor!
She is the best biology teacher. If I can get an A, anyone can. She is very concerned about learning although she can appear to be a hard ass. I recommend her!
I think she is a great teacher, she may come across as a hard ass but in the end she will do alot to help you with your assignments and tests
A good teacher. You have to stay on top of your work. It is not an easy class, but she will help you in any way possible.
Very good teacher....very concerned with student understanding of material. Stay on top of your work and you'll be fine.
I thought she was very hard and made you feel stupid.
Pretty hard, wants you to really understand everything. Doesn't really help your grade.
You will never wonder what is expected of you in her lab, she makes it very clear. That is what a good instructor does. Her grading is always fair and her teaching abilities are off the chart, I would recommend her class to everyone.
She is a very hard teacher. She expects you to know everything the same day she tells it to you. It's like she thinks we can comprehend this biology stuff as fast as she can. This is a foreign language for some of us and she needs to understand that.
Makes everything harder than it needs to be. She said it is her job to weed out the people who arent serious about being a Bio major, and trust me she trys. Very hard, smart-ass, rude and tough for no reason. I would suggest taking anyones lab but hers.
she was not my lab instrctor, thank goodness!but, having to deal with her in the lab was a pleasurable as licking a agar of E.coli!
Good person and great professor. She'll help you when you need it and she actually cares.
I wouldn't take her. She knows we don't care about biology yet still makes a non major biology class very hard. Makes things a lot more complicated then they should be. Will help you, but is very rude and knocks your confidence down. Very hard class. Be prepared to study like its your major.
This class is required....it is not something needed for every major and is a nonmajor science but Bannan thinks you must know everything about the course....very very very hard course!
she is a very hard teacher and a is very rude..in other words straight up ****! Would not suggest taking her!
AWFUL PROFESSOR!! Ms. Bannan went too fast during lecture and whenever you would ask her a question, she would get pissed off. She acted as if you should already know everything about Biology before hand. DON'T TAKE HER...SAVE YOURSELF!!
Do not take her unless you really want to be a science major. She is by far the hardest science teacher I have ever had. If you do take her make sure you memorize the entire book if you want to make a good grade.
She is a really good teacher and knows her stuff. You will learn a lot and make a good grade if you do what is expected of you. You can't be a slacker and expect to make an A. I highly recommend her if you actually want to learn something.
if she likes you, your fine, if she dosent... well you're just out of luck
She can be real stuck up at times and have a major attitude but overall she's ok
She was the worst teacher and the most mean spirited person I have ever met. I went to get extra help and left her office in tears. I wish someone would see her ratings and evaluations and can her a**!
HARD. Lab was an interesting class but too long. Her attitude gets in the way of her teaching.
great teacher

she is very helpful but seems to get aggravated easily sometimes. overall she's okay
Her class is somewhat easy. She is an easy grader when it comes to writing reports for her. Her test are sooo very hard. Her test usually covers materials that she doesn't clarify in class. Lab for her was somewhat easy. My best work came from completing extra credit and typing reports.
Ms. Bannon is moody. Make sure you do what she says or she will yell. She was somewhat helpful, but depended on her mood. Tests were okay. She tries to be tricky on the final practical so watch out for that.
I agree when others have said she expects you to have previous knowledge of micro with the way she flies thru it. A good tip to others that I wish I had known before taking this class (b/c some of us are working students) DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU PLAN TO DEVOTE EXTRA TIME OUTSIDE OF SCHEDULED LAB TIME! According to her, this is a must.
Mrs. Bannan is a tough teacher. She goes through things too quickly and expects you to already know biology before you come in even though it's Biology for non-science majors. She plays favorites and gets very upset when students ask question. When you ask questions, she acts like you're stupid and tells you to look it up in the book.
Very moody but a fun teacher. Her class is easy but she is very demanding. Every micro lab teacher requires time outside of scheduled lab. Its for your own good. If you can deal with attitude and want a goood grade, take her. You won't regret.
nice lady. she is willing to help and she makes it fun. She had her days but so does everyone. and its hard material to learn but it's not so bad. Expect a quiz EVERYDAY she won't tell you this but know it! And getting your unknown isn't that bad as long as you put in the time and effort.
Has the worst attitude ever. Thinks everyone should have it as hard as she did. Bad attitude. Dont take her. Belittles people into making them feel stupid and insecure
Everything she teaches comes from the book word for word so it's no surprise that she needs it to explain the material to you when you go to her office for extra help. She tries to intimidate you, which is not a great teaching method and she makes the subject much harder than it should be. She is awful so avoid taking her.
A horrible teacher!! She reads straight from the book. She does not even know the material! She is so rude and she is never in her office. She makes up some execuse of why she wont be there. She will go out of her way to avoid helping her! Don't take her!!
DEATH BY POWER POINT!!!!She teaches STRAIGHT out of the book almost verbatim. She also goes super fast.I had to re-write my notes so I could used them to study.I still got an A in her class but that was only because I had the same class in high school and remembered most of the things we covered. She is also intimidating.
Ms. Bannan is a very good professor. She is straightfoward and tells you what you need to know for her test! Always willing to help and gives out so many extra credit opportunities and bonuses on each test! People just complain about her because they are slackers and don't want to study! I'm making a very High A in the class(over 100). Recommended
Bannon is a great professor! Sure she can be a little sarcastic, but she is very straightfoward about what is expected of her students because she believes they can really do well. She can be pretty funny too and as a biology lover she really can be inspiring!
She is one of those teachers that you hated or you loved. Me I was neutral, I made above a 100 on all her test. The class was easy, but it was hell waking up at 8:00 to go to a bio teacher who teaches right from the book. She is not boring, but to me acted like a high school teacher. UNPROFESSIONAL! Overall if you can keep your composure you will m
She uses facebook to post information about the class, how annoying! She started making me hate facebook. PATIENCE IS A VIRTURE IN THIS CLASS!!! I swear at one point I just wanted to take the final and leave. Made a high A though. (104 in the class)
RUN!!!!! I don't care what anyone else says , this woman is terrible, I did get a good grade but you have to study sooooo hard, and I type 105wpm and I couldn't keep up with her in lecture b/c she goes soo fast, she's rude, and her tests are really hard if you don't study, about 6 chapt's per test so I hope you like to read!!
I really liked her. She is very clear about what she expects from you in lab and was very helpful to me outside of lab. The quizzes are not hard at all if you take notes from her powerpoints. However, you really have to study for her tests.
Ms. Bannan is wonderful, I heard horrible stories about her prior to her class, they were wrong. She tells you exactly what she wants. She is a hard grader but if you study for her test and quizzes you will do fine. She does give a quiz every week, but that helped my grade!
takes attendance. uses powerpoint every day. does not explain or "teach" the material. does not use the book. goes way too fast, hard to keep up with her while writing. doesn't like yout o ask questions. very blunt. arrogant. would NOT suggest taking her. AWFUL! run!!!
I am an elementay major and was put in the class, I did poorly on my first test, but what I learned is READ YOUR BOOK! she teaches right out of the book. DO her study guides and STUDY everyday and you will pass. She is a good teacher, don't let ppl scare you. Stop by her office and get to know her she is funny. Take her if a bio major!
I HATE IT!!!!!! she does not teach. all she does is tells you what she wants you to know. You have to teach yourself. Get a tutor on the first day of class, Because they will be your teacher. She is a nice person but a HORRIBLE teacher. If you are a visual learner you are SCREWED!!!!!!!!!!
Very rude, yells for absolutely no reason
I love her. Im still taking her now and I have a high A. Her tests are straight from the notes and from study guides.I never read the book. She is hard but she just faces reality.
I personally think she is an awesome teacher.. yes she is hard but biology is not an easy subject... she is very real and gives you a hit of the real science courses
She is an OK teacher! DO NOT skip any classes!!!! I repeat do not skip any classes!!! Her test are strictly by her notes. If there is an SI session I would advise you to go to it......she gives them hints about what's going to be on quizzes and test. If you take her be prepared to tell your socializing world good bye!
Take the Honors class if you can, she treats the Honors students a little better and gets more personal when it comes to grading, i. e. it helps a lot. I wanted to take her again for Bio102 but didn't have the opportunity. =(
Hard. Take this class in summer school if she is the only one teaching during the semester. I struggled to make a C and I am an honor student. Our class average was a D in lecture and lab. Not to mention her attitude sucks!!
One of those teachers that just enjoys the sound of her own voice and won't tolerate any others. Very Strict.
This teaching is boring. She acts like she doesn't care if you learn the material or not. It seems like USC wants students to fail so they can retake it and pay more money again. Best thing to do, is take it at greenville tech and get McKain.
She can be dry, but she cares about students that try. If you don't go the extra mile she will leave you behind. She is the best biology teacher I have had for explaining things and helping students who ask her for it. I have had her for about 3 years and I love her class.
Was not a simple class, and she wont "hold your hand" through it, but she is very clear on what she expects. Study guides are given, which is a rarity in the biology department. If you study, come to class and take good notes, you'll be fine.
i think she's better at lecture than lab because she gives you study guide in lecture and in lab she's like "Well, use your reasoning skills" ?????? Anyway, she's funny when she wants to be and explains stuff well, but only the first time really. go to class, take good notes and study and everything will be ok.
She's horrible. She's a nice lady but she doesn't seem to care much about her students. She's rude at times and she doesn't teach. The study guides are USELESS and the SI is even worse if she uses Regina Ferris. Waste of time and money. GET SMOAK, she's way easier.
She is a nice lady and knows her stuff! Tests are impossible along with quizes. If you study and use the study guides you are better off. This course in general is hard if you are not a bio major so be prepared to study ALOT. Very funny at times and sarcastic.
DO NOT TEXT IN CLASS ...she remembers when averaging finals! EXTREMELY HARD CLASS
Avoid: Teaching philosophy seems to be sink or swim in her class. Will try to weed you out of the class, even though this isn't for Bio Majors. Test never match up with lecture or book. Simply reads off of PowerPoint. Try to find another professor for this course. Treats you like high schoolers. Should be given chance to improve or should resign.
She's rude and doesn't know how to answer a question without coming off that way. Don't text - she will take off points. She tells you to read lab before and basically reads the whole thing to you again when you get to class, and she NEVER lets you out early. BUT if you can deal with all of that it's an easy lab if you do your work.
Her class was extremely hard, but doable. If you use her office hours and email her for help she will help, though her answers generally are in the form of questions that can redirect you to the answer. She helps you to help yourself, which is much needed for bio majors.I still go to her for help and even though its been years since I had her class
Rude, tries to be funny repeating the same jokes. Discriminates girls especially if they are pretty. Gives boys more points when gradint the tests. Needs to find a man (you know what I mean...) Her tests however, are easy - multiple choice, tru/false, and short answer questions come straight from the study guide.
Pure evil. She hates for you to ask a ?s. She'll just treat you like you're dumb. She likes to try to take off on EVERYTHING like -.5 here and -.75 there. She DOES have her favorites she does like to play around which is the ONLY good thing about her + gives study guides but if you can help it STAAAY AWAAAY!! She also checks to see if you go on BB
Class is straightforward. Study the notes consistently and the quizzes will be no problem. Concepts (and sometimes ?s too) from quizzes usually show up on tests. Not a very hard class in terms of passing, but getting an A is another story. All in all, not bad.
AMAZING TEACHER!! She goes out of her way when she sees students really trying. If you don't try, she can be mean and cut throat. But having her for my 101 was the best thing for me she was amazing!!
Loved her class and her. She is tough the first few weeks only b/c she weeds out freshman BIO majors who aren't built for BIO. I will miss her when I graduate next year!!
She is NOT gender biased and is more than willing to answer questions, so long as they are well thought out and not a repeat question. If you study her study guides, you will make an A in the course. The only people who don't like her are people who shouldn't be a bio major in the first place.
I don't care what anyone says about her, do not take her as your professor. She isn't helpfu, rude, and really doesn't care about her students at all. Gets really upset if you simply ask a question. You may think you'll make it out okay, but you're wrong just like I was. I am trying to save you the agony now anyone is a better professor than her.
I hate this teacher! She is so freaking RUDE! And she'll CALL YOU OUT in a heartbeat JUST to embarrass you on purpose. She's evil and wants to see you embarrass yourself in front of others. We had partner work and she gave my partner an A while she gave me a B? WTH? We did the same thing! She's so rude!Even connor was better!
This woman really should not be a professor. She is not helpful and doesn't care about her students. I had a B+ in my lecture and a 56 in her lab class which overall gave me a C in the class! My GPA is still ruined truth be told if I knew how bad she was before the switch date I would of changed and more than likely had a B+ as my overall grade.
She is not helpful and yells at her students. She seems to take her personal problems out on the class.
Dr. Bannan is a tough teacher. I would not take her again. She lectures directly from the book and uses PowerPoints to organize the information. She talks very fast, and seems to get annoyed when you ask her a question. She likes to weed out people who aren't "fit" for biology. Take a lot of notes and do all of the study guides posted online.
Rude! She pretty much weeds out the people who she feels isn't fit for biology. If you fail her test she pretty much tells you to drop the class. In lab me and my partner did a project she gave him a B and me a C and I don't see why because we did the work together. She just isn't a good teacher but she is way better than J. Storm.
Dr. Bannan is probably the easiest science professor you will ever have. In order to pass her class you MUST study. She is the sweetest lady you will ever meet and is always willing to help. Her test were a bit hard however they are easier if you study ahead of time. I would kill to take her class again!
WORST PROFESSOR AT USC UPSTATE! DO NOT EVER TAKE HER! SHE IS THE DEVIL IN THE FORM OF A HUMAN BEING!!! DOES NOT MAKE MATERIAL CLEAR TO UNDERSTAND AND IF YOU ASK HER FOR HELP SHE BASICALLY TELLS YOU THAT YOU ARE STUPID! AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!
Prof. Bannan has been one of my favourite Bio professors for the last couple years. Yes the material is difficult and will require study time, but we are in university! If you have questions, go to her office hours and she will be more than happy to give you the help that you need. She won't coddle you, but she works to prepare you for your future.
She will be an excellent teacher if you pay attention. She provides plenty of extra content. The only way you do not make an A or B is you did not put enough time in it.
I absolutely love Bannan. I had to retake her class b/c I had test anxiety. I received an A in her lab class and a B overall. You absolutely have to go in depth with the study guides. Memorize the answers to the reading assignments. Go to her office and talk to her, she seems harsh in lecture but she if she knows you are trying she will help you
Terrible teacher. Reads her notes straight from her laptop. Not quite sure she really understands what she it teaching. She very rude and does not care about your grade. Many people struggled in this class and this is definitely a class you SHOULD make an A in, but you most likely won't! Too bad you cannot avoid her. I wish I could have!
I took BIO102 with Bannan the first time and made a D but decided to take her again on purpose. If you go to her office hours she is more than willing to help you. She can come off as intimidating in big classroom setting but she's not. Exams are tough but she has study materials that help. Lab was much better for me than lecture!
So far she is the only teacher that is teaching Biology 102 I wish someone else were teaching it. She is a very hard grader I had her for lecture and lab both were HARD. Read your textbook everyday, do your study guides, go to the extra credit given, read lab book for pre-lab quiz and In lab quiz. I feel sorry for the Biology major people
If you are planning to pass this course expect at least 10 hours of reading/homework/study-time a week. 80% of the test is multiple choice, 10% short answer, & 10 % matching or fill-in-the-blank. There are 6 quizzes & they are harder than the test. She comes off as intimidating, but is willing to help. I would say she's definitely not easy but fair
Very tough. That is all.
Lab was harder then it has to be. She really is tough and intimidating. She loosens up a bit after the drop date bc those who stick around are real bio majors. study study study for the in-lab quiz (some questions are from the questions in the book) she is available for office hours. make sure to do your pre-lab quiz and make good grades on those.
Professor Bannan can come off as intimidating but is very nice if you take the time to talk to her more often and is very helpful through email and in office hours. Make sure to use her as a resource often. She lectures quickly so I used a computer for notes and basically got down everything she said and that helped on tests which are MC.
She is quite intimidating and doesn't care much for questions about her quizzes. She does not make sure you have a better understanding if you do have a question.
This course is defiantly harder than 101. Lots of memorization. Hardy-Wienberg problems on every quiz and every test. Only way you will pass with an A is if you don't have a life and you study all day like i did. Good Luck, because you will need it.
By far THE most frustrating teacher I've ever had. Reads from the lecture slides, right from book. Posts "helpful" HW and Chi Square problems, butchers the math on the answers, and then tests you on something completely different than the guide. She has the WORST attitude, and marks right answers wrong 2X this semester. Not 3* prof. Avoid!
Bannan is difficult. She gives 3 exams, one final, quizzes, but bonus questions on tests. She randomly takes attendance, and reads off the powerpoint and most of the info. comes from her lecturing out loud. This class was hard to pass and requires a lot of extra effort from reading from the textbook but she gives study guides and posts videos.
I've had Laura Bannan for several classes, including BIO 101 and Micro 330 lab. She comes off as intimidating in the very beginning because she wants to weed out the students who are not meant to be bio majors. Biology isn't supposed to be easy, and there are real-world consequences to screw-ups. She tries to instill this in every student.
She just reads from slides and gives tests. Very fast paced class only graded on quizzes and tests it is not a lot of them either.
Lectures will be heavy but they give a solid base for the material you will cover in class. After the drop date, she is more laid back. The same goes for lab. READ. READ. READ. You can't simply pass her tests from the lecture powerpoint you must read the book. Also, make sure you do the prelab quizzes and study for her in lab quizzes.
Every week there are two classes, one before class and one in class. The quizzes are not hard if you study. If you do not go to her office hours and participate in class, you will not do well. Be prepared for a heavy bit of work. Very strict with grading but overall she is a great professor.
If you take her, get ready to spend HOURS per day on just her class. She told me to pass you must spend HOURS a day studying and doing extra homework and studying that she didn't even give you. I worked my butt off in this class and blew all of the tests because they are that hard. The lab tests are ridiculous. Be ready to have no life.
I took Bannan for Bio102 and she was by far the worst professor I had during my time at USC Upstate. I studied for 4-5 hours a day JUST for her class and still did poorly on the exams and quizzes. When I asked for help or had a question in class, she was belittling and rude. If you want to have your love of science killed, take this class.
NO! NO! NO! DO NOT TAKE HER! She grades ENTIRELY too hard. This is an introductory biology course, and she treats it like mastery school. More people make C's and below, than A's and B's. We started the year with 40 people and finished with 13. When I asked her, "Don't you think the class is too hard?" She said "I have 2 A's in the class." DO NOT!!
Professor Bannan's classes are hard but she is willing to go the extra mile for you if you show up to her office hours. Complete the study guides while reading the textbook AHEAD OF CLASS and you'll be more than prepared for the exams and quizzes. She provides you with everything you need to get those A's. Serious students will do fine.
I would spend countless hours on this class. I would spend 12-15 hours on one lab report, rewatch the lectures, have my bio savvy mom read over my reports, study for the quizzes and would still fail.
very hard and a terrible teacher and never responds to emails about help.
She is bad at communication and very difficult to work with
If you can find another teacher to take please do that. Her teaching methods are terrible. She only reads off PowerPoints. Then when you go to office hours she belittles you.
Biology 101 and Professor Bannan requires extra effort towards her class! You have to read and go the extra mile if you want to do well. Although she seems harsh, she truly isnt that bad as a teacher. What I expected college professors to be like. She tries to give you opportunities to adjust like study guides, take advantage of that!
Professor Bannan does not make feeling like you are learning easy. Be prepared to devote 4-6 hours a day just to this class because she does not teach. She is constantly saying to our class that we need to put in the effort to pass but she is only reading off a purchased PowerPoint from the book. I would recommend avoiding her at all costs.
Biology 101 and Professor Bannan is by far the worst professor I have ever had! When you go to her for help she tells you to basically study harder. If you ask a questions she gives you attitude. You can tell that she does not care about her students and shows lack of passion for teaching. Study guide does not help either. Do NOT take her class!
I would recommend not to take this women because you will fail. She fails at literally everything if you take this class be ready to fail and also what she tells you to study does not prepare you for the exam. This class is the worst class I have taken throughout all my college years. It is not the class it the professor.
She is the worst professor I've ever had. She is so rude and not understanding at all. Anytime I asked her questions or about my grade she made me feel stupid. I studied about 2 to 3 hours a day and still barely made a B. Only 5 people passed her final out of the 12 people left in her class, originally being 30 something, and no one made an A.
To pass Bannan's class you have to study the materials thoroughly. Use her study guides because she is kind enough to give them and take effective notes. Exams are timed so be aware of that when taking you exam. Go to tutoring or SI sessions to get extra help if you fail the first or second quiz.
