Professor Benton was new to UNC this year but she is fantastic! She explains things very well and makes class way more bearable than I expected. She also has a sarcastically awkward sense of humor. Her tests are extremely fair. Take her class!
Explanations were adequate, but I felt the questions that she assigned were not representative of the material on the tests. The book work was easier and more straight-forward than the test. The curve ensures a percentage of students will make a C for any given test regardless of score, which I think is wrong. Nice, but overall mediocre.
She is excellent. Great attitude and very helpful. Go to office hours and you will see how amiable she really can be!
At first, I really liked Professor Benton, but after the semester was halfway over, I changed my mind. She constantly makes mistakes when she's teaching us and has students in the class correct her. Also, she never keeps her promises regarding when she'll hand back exams. A decent professor, but be wary.
Ms. Benton is a good teacher but she doesn't go into depth during class so you have to do a lot of learning on your own. If you're willing to put in time outside of class then you will do well. The only thing that sucks is the curving scale but that's not specific to her class, it's all science classes at UNC. Her tests are basically the same as HW
One of those teachers who act like they care and know what they are doing and realy don't. ALso pretty anoying when she stresses the hard parts of the chapter with tons of math eqautions and then ask you abscure defintions from the book on the exam. Needs to be reminded this is college chemistry - not highschool.
Difficult course was not made any better by her lack of involvement. The only thing mandatory in this course is the final exam. There are three other optional exams, but there is no homework or anything to bring up your grade.
Good prof, I was happy with it. Hard class, but not impossible. Glad I got her and not Pielak.
I loved professor Benton! She is really funny and cares if her students get the material. The class is hard obviously but she's really great!
I love Professor Benton! The class isn't easy, but she is so kind and really cares about her students. She holds lots of office hours and review sessions before every test. Take advantage of these! They help a lot. The class is all about the amount of effort that you put in - do the homework, go to class and review sessions, study, and you're okay.
Realistically, Professor Benton isn't that far removed from most of the other chem101 teachers. She doesn't give homework to buffer your grade, which blows if you have no motivation to do anything not required (like me) but she's a nice person, a good teacher, and if you go to class, do the homework, and actually study for the tests, you'll do fine
Very good professor if you've taken AP chem before.Homework is optional, but you should do it because the test questions pretty much mirror it. I did very little studying and still did well in the class, but for people who haven't taken AP I recommend a tutor or lots of office hours. She is really funny, enjoyable, and helpful during office hrs. :)
Prof Benton assigns hw in the textbook but it is not required nor do you have easy access to the answers. Her tests are hard but the final was the similar questions pulled from the 3 exams. She is always there to help and will work with scheduling. Her personality is what made chem better.
Professor Benton is extremely passionate and helpful, if you ask for it. It's hard to get one-on-one time in a lecture-style class, but if you make the effort to do your work and ask questions you will succeed. Her course is completely self-motivated, so do the homework, come to class, and take the tests. You will be glad you did.
Professor Benton made it as simple and straightforward as possible.
Professor Benton is AMAZING. She was very easy to understand and she never threw curve balls on tests. However, she does not assign mandatory homework, so your grade will depend on how willing you are to do the optional homework and practice problems.
Would highly recommend her as an instructor. If you put the work in, you will do well in this course. The only bad thing is, the final exam is a minimum 50% of your grade, so coming in with a good chemistry background helps a ton. She makes chemistry about as straightforward as possible.
Good teacher, very clear lectures and you don't have homework, just the exams. However, don't get on her bad side or she'll hold a grudge against you specifically. Overall, best chem 101 teacher.
Benton is great at what she teaches; however she tends to make errors a lot and doesn't hold up to her promises (if she says that she'll release the exam key, expect it to be delayed by a day or two). Her tests are straightforward, but there are way too many questions on there than the allotted class time.
She's a great professor. Very clear headed, funny, interesting and intelligent. Her class is very fair, but beware of the final (it's worth more than 50% of your grade). Also, don't expect any grade buffers like Mastering Chemistry homework. She makes chemistry very interesting.
Fantastic professor! Had her for the summer. As a guy who genuinely hates chemistry, professor Benton's enthusiasm, energy, and clarity when teaching allowed me to enjoy chemistry. She is super helpful, and she focuses on students learning the general concept rather than testing us on specific unimportant information. Get her if you can!
Benton is one of my favorite professors at UNC! She explains concepts very clearly and she is really funny and enthusiastic! Some students complain that this course is tough, but that's not her fault because CHEM101 is a hard course no matter who your professor is. If you have questions, go to her office hours and she is willing to help!
Professor Benton really helped me understand concepts I hadn't understood in high school chemistry. She is easy going, funny, and laid back. She holds extra sessions to help students prepare for exams. She drops your lowest test score. If you do the reading and practice problems and come to class, you'll pull off a good grade (B average)
I ADORE Professor Benton. I was not at the top of my high school chemistry classes, but now I feel completely confident in the subject. She is a great teacher despite her class being hard (it's Chem 101, duh). I highly recommend doing the reading and homework (even though they're not required). If you are adamant about your work, you will succeed.
Professor Benton is amazing. She truly wants you to understand the material! Her lectures are interesting enough to keep me awake at 8 AM, she is adorably dorky, and super approachable. Take advantage of her (really great) exam reviews and her practice exams that she posts on sakai, and you should be just fine! Plus she drops the lowest test.
Professor Benton is exactly who freshman coming into their first year need to have on their schedule. She is truly one of the best professors and cares deeply about each student. My chem 101 class was huge, this being said, if you want to do well, she is easily available to meet with and she will help you
Benton is probably one of the best chemistry professors. Her tests are fair and she wants to see her students do well. She is engaging and enthusiastic about her job. Attendance is not mandatory, but you have to go to get participation points which are part of your grade.
Professor Benton is a fantastic lecturer. She is able to explain difficult and tricky concepts in a simple and easy-to-understand way. CHEM 101 is supposed to be a weed-out class, but I didn't feel that at all. Yes, the tests are moderately difficult, but that's to be expected because of the course material.
Professor Benton is an amazing teacher. I was in her office hours every week! The homework isn't mandatory and tests aren't mandatory.. but TAKE THE TESTS AND DO THE HOMEWORK. #ReasonsWhyIAlmostFailed
Professor Benton was an awesome teacher. She truly cares about her students and is always willing to help you if you need it. Her tests are difficult and she moves pretty quickly so it is imperative you keep up with the homework. Take advantage of all her review sessions, and I recommend you try to get to know her! I didn't and wish I did.
I took Chem 101 with her last semester and enjoyed her class immensely, I was expecting more of the same this semester. She let us know early on that this was her favorite class to teach, but I felt that this semester she was much less invested than she was last year, and was often out of town and unable to answer e-mails. Tests were also hard.
Poll Everywhere questions for attendance (usually 4-5 questions a class). If you miss a few there is some leniency. It is most helpful to skim through a few sections before class and her lectures will clarify concepts you didn't understand. Review sessions are most helpful and tests are graded fairly. Be prepared for the 100 questions final.
Professor Benton is a great teacher and cares about chemistry and her students. Her lectures are clear and she explains topics very well and goes over detailed examples. The homework is optional, but do it because many test questions are just like the homework. People saying her tests are hard didn't do homework or go to the review sessionsclass.
Professor Benton is fully committed to her students. She is a wonderful teacher who will provide help when asked. One area she can work on: not canceling office hours.
Benton is a fantastic teacher, especially considering she's trying to educate 400+ kids at once. I didn't do as well as I hoped in this class, but it was mostly because I didn't invest enough time in the homework (not mandatory, but you should treat it like it is). She's passionate and made chemistry way clearer to me than my high school teacher.
She's the only professor I've had at UNC that doesn't make me question why she gets paid. She's extremely clear in lecture, very to the point. Her review sessions are helpful when preparing for the tests, and homework is not mandatory, but to your benefit. Holds her students to high, but realistic standards. Take her if you can, it's worth it.
Easily one of the best professors at Carolina. She's as good of a chemistry professor as can ever be asked for. Be prepared to attend class for the Poll Everywhere questions, and definitely make sure you pay attention during her class. Her tests are quite fair if you put in the effort. She's a very loveable teacher. I definitely recommend her.
Professor Benton is a really great professor. Her exams are not easy, but if you keep up with the reading and go to lectures they are doable. She also offers review sessions before every exam and periodically throughout the semester for important topics. She does not take attendance, but she gives poll everywhere questions for credit.
She is a very good lecturer and going to class is definitely essential. Everything you need to know for her exams will be gone over in class, and she does awesome reviews before exams that are very helpful. Study practice problems for exams and you should be fine. Beware, the final is much harder than the other exams
Great teacher! Very good at explaining things. I really enjoyed the class.
Prof Benton has gone down hill. I had her last semester for 101 and up until half way through she was great. Something else must be going on in her life and she just doesn't seem to give 100% towards teaching. I am very disappointed in how bad she has gotten. (received a B+ in 101) after working very hard.
Professor Benton is a very enthusiastic instructor who is one of the few professors who could keep me awake in an 8 AM class. Her exams are difficult, especially the final, but she knows her stuff and her lectures cover the material well. If you put in the time with the practice problems she assigns (technically optional), a good grade is possible.
Overall Benton was an effective teacher and made lectures fun and entertaining. Her tests, on the other hand, were neither fun nor entertaining. With a final weighted about 40-60% of your final grade nothing else really matters. Received an B+ on the final, ended up with a B+ in the class. Tests are long and you will be rushed.
Benton is ABSOLUTELY the WORST PROFESSOR I have ever had. NEVER take a class with her. I've had her for 2 semesters and she has never once answered one of my emails and is rude during office hours. Her tests are ridiculously hard for the lack she covers in class. She wastes class time. She does NOT care AT ALL about her students. STAY AWAY.
Professor Benton is a great teacher and is very clear in her expectations. Her tests are hard, but they are completely manageable if you do the optional HW. She's very helpful during office hours and she makes an 8 am class enjoyable. I would definitely recommend her!
Professor Benton is a good teacher who cares about her students. She is very smart, energetic, and knowledgeable about the material. Going to class is essential. To do well in this class you must do the optional practice problems and reading when she assigns them, not right before tests. Tests are tough but you can do well if you put in the effort.
Super interesting and enthusiastic in class! Pretty helpful during office hours. Class is tough, but not because she makes it that way. Chem is already tough, but she makes it easier to understand. Go to class to do well. Best chem prof around, and just for the record, I've NEVER felt like she didn't care about her students, not even for a second.
My problem with Chem has been not being able to devote time to doing the homework outside class - especially because the homework wasn't required. However, it is essential to doing well her exams (especially the sample exercises in the book). The final isn't too bad, and it's multiple choice. Just make time for this class, and LB will be your fave.
Laura Benton saved my faith in Chemistry. After making a C+ in 101, I was a little hesitant about whether I should continue with chemistry but after this semester, I feel like I can make it through. Her tests were challenging but manageable if you know what you are doing. I didn't always agree with the grading system (an entire point for sig figs?)
Professor Benton was a GREAT teacher, but that didn't make her exams any easier. She is always willing to help, and sends detailed emails laying out exactly what homework questions she expects you to have completed and other helpful tips. She truly cares about her students and that is often rare with such large class sizes. For chemistry, TAKE HER!
Her class was very easy, if you do the assignments and study you should get an A.
Overall a great professor. Don't expect to get a recommendation out of her, she takes pride in how she teaches so many students and therefore doesn't feel obligated to get to know any of them. Competition for office hour time is heated. That said, lectures are super clear, tests are challenging but not unreasonably so.
My best advice for anybody with her is to sit in the first row. I was lucky enough to have her during a much smaller summer school class and it helped. Do the practice problems and if at possible avoid wasting time note-taking and go for straight for the practice problems. Both the textbook and answer keys are online in pdf form.
Amazing professor--she really cares about her students, and very good at explaining complex topics. Do the assigned readings BEFORE CLASS, and do ALL of the homework problems and exam reviewsstudy guides and you'll learn so much from this class!
She seems like a really great person and when I went to office hours she was very understanding and helpful. Her tests during the semester were really hard, but her final was easy (contradicts what many others have said). She is extremely fair. She is definitely one of UNC's best professors as a person and a lecturer.
Professor Benton is amazing but not only as a teacher but as a person. I would definitely take her class again!
Her exams are nothing like the examples she goes over in class or the homework in the textbook. She teaches you the basics and expects you to master the subject by the time that exams come around.
If you do the homework and show up to class, tests should be no problem. Great woman, great professor.
Please do the practice exams and the practice textbook problems before each exam. If you do, then you'll at least get a C on the test. Chemistry is a hard subject already, so she understands this. She really tries to make the class enjoyable and is helpful.
She's super nice and very helpful, and definitely wants as many people to pass as possible with the right amount of work put in. She makes lots of practice readily available for tests and her lectures are usually pretty interesting.
Her tests were hard and graded with extreme specificity. Also, she doesn't curve at all. Overall, the tests were tough, but she was willing to help out if needed. Daily online quizzes and daily poll everywhere questions mean you can't slack off. Tough, but better than the other CHEM 102 profs.
Prof. Benton was a fabulous introduction to the UNC faculty. My first semester at Chapel Hill saw several unfortunate events on campus, including an armed gunman on campus and a suicide... She was understanding and supportive of her students and genuinely cared about us. The class wasn't easy (you will work hard), but she is great. I recommend.
She is an amazing woman. She will go out of her way to make sure that the concepts are being learned adequately and tries o help bump up grades if possible. Her office hours are hard to come by, but if you read, do the homework and come to class attentive you will understand the material.
Super sweet
This is a great review of AP Chem and Benton keeps class interesting. She always has the students best interests in mind and it shows. There is poll everywhere and a lot of quizzes, but these end up helping your grade a lot! You will learn a lot if you take benton, but you'll also work a lot.
Ms. Benton is very helpful and gives email updates on what's upcoming, which is very useful and nice. However, I don't like the way she lectures. She uses PowerPoints heavily and is sometimes clear, but also she blows through a lot of difficult material, so you must work a lot with the book or already know it from AP Chemistry. Do the assigned HW!!
I loved Professor Benton! She is super helpful and cares about whether or not you know the material and is an amazing professor. Do the homework. Also it is helpful if you print out the PowerPoints ahead of time to use as notes.
Not an easy class, but if you work hard you will do well
She gives guided notes that are amazing. She will tell you things to focus on for the tests and posts old tests to practice with. If you do these you'll be fine. Hard class, but she does everything she can to make it enjoyable. She even brought donuts after we lost the national championship. Love her and love the class. The homework is also great.
She was super nice, very clear, and helpful. She explains concepts very well and made the lectures enjoyable. Her tests were straightforward and just like the examples done in class but she can be a stickler for certain things (having thorough explanations/ sig figs) so her tests aren't uber easy but still fair.
If you have the chance to take Benton, do it! She's great. She is an amazing teacher and really made me enjoy chemistry, which is usually my least favorite subject. Her guided notes are super helpful and as long as you do the hw, Sakai quizzes, and PollEverywhere questions, you should be good. Tests are a lot harder than practice problems though.
Benton is a great professor, however, she messes up when doing problems (especially ones that are math intensive). Also, she takes off for sig figs on tests which adds up and brings you down from an easy 100 to an A-. Easy class overall if you watch sig figs. Beware of final. you can go in with making A's and come out with a B average.
Great person, has fun lectures, just made sure you actually go. EVERYDAY! Her class is not easy but she gives so many resources that a good grade is not impossible. Use the resources, keep up with everything and you will do well. Just dont procrastinate, work on something everyday. Also do not lease Sapling till the last min.
She is fun in the classroom, but super unorganized outside of class. Cancels her office hours all the time. Exams are graded super harsh and carelessly. Worst professor I have ever had at UNC.
Laura Benton is probably one of my favorite professors at Carolina. She is super funny and makes an 8 am worth going to. Do the work and you will see results. The Chemistry Central Science book is essential to doing well in the class. Final is cumulative and much harder than the semester exams. Be aware.
Benton is an AMAZING lecturer. She relates concepts to personal stories , and the material really sticks. She's young, tries to stay hip, and cares about her students. She tries her best to make tests fair, and my only complaint is that the multiple choice final ruined my grade because there was no partial credit. Had an A all semester until then.
Professor Benton is a great at intro teaching, I feel as though she spoon feeds the information to you (she does guided notes). I could have retained a lot more information if I had to fend for myself. She is able to explain things in multiple ways and she is very clear about assignments and communicating what she expects from her students.
Laura the best choice for a general chemistry course. She is really passionate about chemistry and helpful when lost. There are three tests that are made by the department and participation is taken through clicker questions, but she doesn't do them often. She gives practice problems, study guides and hosts her own review session before the exams.
Laura Benton is one of the best Chem professors I've had at UNC. She is skilled as a lecturer: she is an engaging speaker and is good at conveying the material in an understandable way. Benton's class is not a walk in a park - this is Biochem, after all. But you can tell that she is passionate about the material and is passionate about teaching it.
Benton has been one of my favorite professors at UNC. Her lectures are fantastic in helping you understand the material. She gives plenty of resources to help you succeed. I recommend her to everyone!
Benton is probably the best option for the unavoidable evil that is Chem 102, her lectures are very clear but don't manage to cover everything. She is hurt by both the massive class size and the recent standardization of the subject. It takes a lot of work but it's possible to do well if one does the hw/readings and stays engaged in class
Benton is super passionate, energetic, and keeps you engaged in the material. She's very good at answering questions and will make sure you understand everything. Clicker questions are for accuracy!! The exams are fine, but there are a lot of small things that you think you don't need to know that show up. Literally everything is fair game.
Benton is a great professor. She really likes teaching chemistry, and she sympathizes with students who are struggling with the material. She and her peer mentors are very accessible for help when needed. Tests require intuitive thinking, but she covers all of the material that you will find on the test (whether you recognize it or not).
Chem102 is hard no matter which professor, but Benton makes it possible. We had two other chem102 teachers sub for our class, and Benton explained concepts in a much better way. She frequently gives inspiration and understands that students are more than their grades. Make sure to utilize outsides resources for help before you start to fall behind.
