Brentner is a wonderful teacher; she's very passionate about the subject and could not be clearer about what she expects. She's a little shy but quite friendly. As long as you copy down what she puts on the board for notes you will get an A on the tests and thus class. There's even extra credit! So happy I took her for this core class! Take her!
Go to class, take notes on what she writes on the board, and you'll do fine. Her lectures come out of the book- you can get by w/o reading. Book is good if you miss class though (which I've done more than I'd care to admit). She gives study guides. She also understands it's a core class- and it's not too time intensive. Would take again.
This class was not bad at all. If you write down what she writes on the board you will be fine. She has weekly online quizzes of 10 questions, but are not hard at all. If you aren't doing well, she gives an opportunity for extra credit. I didn't pick up my book once, you can do well without it as long as you go to class. All in all, good teacher.
Good class and her lectures are very useful. Expect quizzes to be due online Friday weekly. There are 6 individual research projects due throughout the semester of which you must complete 3, but they aren't very difficult. There is a group project at the end of the semester and 2 midterms which are average, and a final which DOES require studying!
Laura Brentner sets her students up for success. She has thousands of resources and extra credit opportunities available. She is just a nice lady that wants you to have an enjoyable class with minimal work.
Gives 6 quizzes which are all super long except last 2. Write everything she writes on the board, and you HAVE to read the book. Prepare for quizzes by studying your notes, learning the vocabulary, reviewing her slides, and reading ALL of the lessons. Recommend doing the practice quizzes on Sakai. Wouldn't recommend her for an easy A.
Her class isn't hard, it's just a lot of tedious and unnecessary work. Her quizzes are kind of hard and what pissed me off was that if the class did well on one quiz she would make the next one super hard. There's quizzes, a project, and final. She was also really boring and made the classes duller than it had to be. I wouldn't take her again.
Do NOT take Brentner for ENVS 237. She is super dull and makes the material really boring. She's very particular and will mark points off if you don't do things her way.
The class was VERY difficult, but I think it's mostly because it's been a while since most of us have taken intro chem, which is the basis for most of the class. This is why I don't think it's entirely her fault, but a more thorough review of basic chem at the beginning of the semester would have been helpful. Overall, good prof! She is helpful.
This was her first time teaching this subject but I felt she did a great job. There's a lot of assignments but most are in groups and during class. She writes detailed notes during her lectures which are very helpful. There's only two tests: midterm and final for which she provides study guides and extra office hours for. It's a lot of work.
Professor Brentner was fine. She understands that UCSF is a required class and does not give too much additional work. She is a tough grader, the final is cumulative, but it is not too difficult to get an A if you do all the assignments and extra credit. Her lectures were fairly boring and I never really looked forward to the class, but she was ok.
She's so sweet! The class is kinda tough, and I had it her first semester teaching it, but she heavily curves tests. One bigger research paper and group presentation, some tests that the textbook is really helpful in studying for. I know some people don't like her, but I really did, and I found her very approachable.
Prof Brentner is a good teacher but not super memorable. You have to come to class because every day is a lecture. Study well for tests and you'll be ok. I liked the class because I find the subject interesting but she could sometimes put me to sleep. But she's very sweet and brought her adorable toddler to class once :)
Just write what is on the board and ignore the slides.
She is a very nice person and good professor. She provides practice exams and a practice final. She also gives tons of opportunities for extra credit. Lectures are directly associated with tests and inclass assignments. Good notes will be extremely useful. Also allows a cheat sheet for the midterm. Would recommend her.
Very nice lady, lot of lecturing. Follow along and study for tests and you're good. Would recommend.
She is honestly just a sweetheart. Wayy too smart to be teaching this course, so if you do take her, definitely find he in a higher level course because I'm sure you will get a lot more out of it. Overall, the professor is good but the course dragged her down. She is very clear with grading and expectations, and is always willing to help you.
Prof. Brentner is a sweet lady. The class is pretty basic and consists of about 4 tests, 1 group project and a couple of weekly paragraph responses. Sometimes the material can be boring but she writes great notes on the board and gives detailed study guides. Shes always willing to help. If you just do the work and follow the study guides- easy A.
Pretty easy for a core. Very nice lady that seems to be understanding.
Honestly, I don't recommend--she is somewhat condescending and expects way too much out of a 100 level core requirement. The study guides she gives are helpful, but she does expect her students to put in a lot fo work outside of class to learn the material. I don't have a problem with putting in work, but it was just too much for a core class.
This class is pretty easy, and Brentner doesn't make it too difficult, but the way the class itself is run is less than optimal. Her lectures are very VERY dull. However there are 6 homework assignments, you only need pick 3 to do, and her tests are easy of you review. Just be aware that there will be a test the day you get back from thanksgiving.
For a 100 level class, she gives WAY too many assignments and doesn't hold back on giving Cs to the majority. The average for our tests were i the 70s. She is pretentious, rude, and unhelpful. Avoid if possible.
Tests are entirely written and made up of applied knowledge problem, lots of math and stuff. Doable.
Tough class, tough grader. Wanted this to be an easy A core, no such luck. She is an unnecessarily hard teacher and clearly wishes she was teaching a major class instead of core. Get ready to study a lot and get a lot of B's and C's.
So our class did "too well" on our last tests (the average was 81%) so she said she graded our short answers harder than she normally would and would make sure our next test was harder, because she felt she "wasn't challenging us enough" It's a core class, it's not supposed to be super challenging. There's also so much work
Laura Brentner's teaching style is lecture based. She's clear on what you need to know, but her exams are not very clear. You may get points off because she wants you to specify even more than what she asked for. It won't be an easy A for this tier 1 course. Also, she can be unwilling to answer questions after class because she'll walk away from u.
This class is not THAT challenging. Her lectures are clear. She writes everything you need to know on the board. I didn't buy the book and have yet to get below a 90% on any assignment. Occasional (annoying) assignments -- maybe 1 every 2 weeks. She posts helpful practice quizzes before exams and writes study guides. One EASY group project.
foundations ii is basically just an applied chem class. however brentner's lectures are very clear and she is a very good teacher. theres two midterms, a final, and in class assignments (in groups) that make up your grade. you also get cheat sheets for tests. she explains tough concepts well for this level of a class
I took this class for core, thinking she'd be an easy A based on what people who had her in the past told me. She must have changed this semester, because most people are getting Cs or Bs, despite actually trying and putting work in. Tests are extremely challenging w/ confusing questions. This is a core class, yet has more work than a major class
Professor Brentner is very knowledgeable so she likely sees this core class content as beneath her. There is a lot of vocabulary that needs to be memorized to succeed in this class so it is important to show up to class to get this information. Write down everything she writes on the board but reading the textbook isn't worth your time.
This class was so hard for me but Dr. Brentner was so so helpful during office hours, definitely recommend going to those if youre struggling. Shes super smart and it shows in her teaching. Great professor.
DO NOT TAKE HER! There are so many easier teachers- she makes the tests unnecessarily hard and asks a lot of irrelevant questions without providing a curve. As someone who's taking a 300 level coding class, I find this class so much more demanding than my coding class. She is my first ever B as LUC. I repeat, DO NOOOOT TAKE HER.
She cares a lot about environmental science but she doesn't really seem to make an effort to connect with students on a more personal level. She knows our names and that's about it. She gives a lot of assignments and a lot of pop quizzes but otherwise it's not too hard. There is no interaction in this class. It's just lectures.
You can tell she's very knowledgeable, but the tests seemed unnecessarily difficult. I talked to others in the class and quite a few of us shared the same frustration with studying hard and still getting B's & C's. She gave pop quizzes but started letting us use our notes on them, so read the book and take notes. Overall seemed unnecessarily hard.
The class was made up of some take home and some in class exams. The required textbook for the class was useless. She does not seem to care about whether or not her students learn. The in class slides were useless. Not enough course materials for studying to be a chem course. I feel like I have retained nothing from the course.
Her lectures are very dense, usually correlates with 4-5 sections from the textbook. Three exams that are very difficult averaged a D on them no matter how hard I studied for them. The only good thing is that there are no weighted grades rather everything just gets entered so I was able to pass with a B. One extra credit assignment that can help.
Dr. Brentner taught a very lecture heavy class, but her lectures were also incredibly informative and provided great notes. The tests were not easy, but if you study then you probably can ace them. She also seems to genuinely care about helping the students succeed. Overall, I liked her, but do feel the class was harder than I expected.
She's nice, but her course was mostly bland lectures and quizzes.
Brentner tries to put humor in her lectures when she notices that students are beginning to doze off. She's pretty lenient on attendance but missing the lectures isn't recommended since everything she talks about is on the quiz. Her quizzes are moderately difficult but if you study you should be fine. She's great at one-on-one help during OH.
She's a solid choice for a core class. She cares about her students, but it's a pretty average class. She tries to make lectures interesting and is accessible through office hours.
Brentners lectures can be very overwhelming but take good notes because the homework and take home tests are very much based on notes from lectures. A difficult class but if you go to her office hours she will explain things very well. Would definitely take her again!
Class is all lecture based. Professor Brentner tries to make the class enjoyable. Pay attention and you'll be fine. No need to buy the $180 text book didn't use it once.
She messes up the grading often and even she has a hard time with the material. Nice person though. Test and homework is very hard.
This class is alot of work but she is understanding and a great teacher!
I LOVE HER!! I've never found science interesting but her class almost made me want to switch my major to Enviro. She is so kind and her lectures are super interesting! I can't say enough good things about her. She seems shy but is actually very approachable. Her tests are awesome bc she provides practice tests in Sakai that reflect the actual test
Dr. Brentner is such a sweet lady! She really cares about her students, and is super accommodating with exams. She allows a cheat sheet for the exam and always posts practice exams in advance. Her lectures are a little boring and she goes pretty fast but if you use her guided notes sheet it isn't terrible. Definitely a solid choice for ENVS 237!
Dr. Brentner is super nice, however I was not a fan of her class. Her lectures are usually unorganized and with daily In-Class Assignments, she usually went over the given time and had us rush/take home the icas. The tests are all written, no multiple choice, so they're a little harder than others. She does drop one grade at the end of the semester
I love her! Took ENVS 137 with her online this semester - the best class I took! Brentner is super friendly and engaging, all of her material is covered in lecture so the book really isn't necessary. If you miss class, she doesn't record the online lectures but she does post the powerooint which is basically the same thing. I highly recommend her!
Dr. Brentner has made me super passionate about the effects of climate change and how important it is to treat the earth kindly. It is obvious she is knowledgeable in her field of study and she is a fairly easy grader. I definitely want to take another one of her classes because her assignments engage you even more in what she is teaching.
Really good professor. She is very passionate about what she teaches. It kind of surprises me how she is THAT enthusiastic talking about coal but she makes it interesting and easy to understand. I like her.
Not sure why she has a low rating. She is one of the best professors I've taken. Creates note outlines and study guides for you, gives amazing feedback and prepares you for the exams. Weekly homework but most is group work and easy to receive a decent grade. Offers extra credit. She really cares about her students! I didn't use the textbook once.
I have Dr. Brentner for foundations in envs part one and part two. She is really nice and allowed me multiple extensions throughout the semester because I had a heavy course load. She understands the difficulty of chemistry in general, but the class is hard regardless.
I was worried for this class as I am not the best at science, but it was very easy to understand and all pretty basic concepts. The class does not take up much time, and the tests are so easy as they are based directly off the lecture slides. Take her if you are able to for sure!
She understands the difficulty of being in college and does her best to help students through that. She's one of the smartest professors I've had and she uses lots of methods to curate to every kind of learner.
Lovely professor, lovely class! He lectures were helpful and her tests and quizzes followed the material closely!
She is very good at explaining things in a way that is not too fast or hard to understand. She puts everything in the slides. Do not actually buy the textbook for her you don't need it. It is helpful but if you are tyring to save money not needed. She makes the homework doable, in class, in groups, and will answer any questions. Very kind.
I LOVE Dr. Brentner!! She's so sweet and the class is super chill. There's weekly homework, one presentation project, an essay, three tests, and a final. The final is optional if you're happy with your grade (you get to drop one exam). She makes learning chemistry enjoyable and easy! 12/10 would recommend taking her class. :)
Dr. Bretner is an amazing and understanding ENVS professor. The class is kind of time-consuming during finals season because there are two projects and an exam, but it's not bad. Lots of grades so it's easy to do well. Really wants you to succeed and the content was interesting!
I think Laura is really kind but her class is very boring and she does not teach much. The quizzes are very hard and on material that she does not teach. I would not be happy about taking her class again because I did not learn much, but she is not terrible if it's your only choice. She definitely has a caring heart.
Id recommend as a first year prof, she gives a lot of extra credit points and its a pretty easy A imo. She wasnt the most amazing, shes nice but the class is pretty much all lecturing off of slides so its good to get the basic intro stuff, but in general not the most interesting class. Lots of grades w/ reading assignments, quizzes, + projects
Dr. Brentner was a solid professor. Quizzes every other week that were open note, 2 semester long projects, and some in class activities. Lots of grades so its easy to do well. Attendance not mandatory. Responds to emails quickly. Caring, not very harsh grader. I would say her only downside is her class is basically just her reading a slideshow
I love Prof Brentner, her lectures are never boring and almost always discussion-based, with very little homework, and tricky, but passable tests. There are many opportunities to bring your grade up and she honestly wants to see every student succeed.
Dr. Brenter is a great teacher & the content is very manageable. We had 2 take-home exams & 1 in person. W/ the in-person exam, we were allowed a sheet of notes, & ur lowest exam score is dropped (meaning u can skip the final if ur happy with your grade). She offers a lot of extra credit and her practice exams are nearly identical to the real ones
I really liked Dr. Bretner as a professor. Her classes are mostly lecture with a few in class activities mixed in. She can be a tough grader but gives really good feedback. Overall I think she's a great professor that really cares about what she teaches.
Professor Brentner is very good at lecturing in a way that is engaging and easy to understand. The material is hefty, but she breaks it up and spends a good amount of time going over it to make sure everyone understands. She is super intelligent. She is more than willing to go over things in office hours and gives great feedback. Take her classes!
Laura is a great professor but her overall class layout and tests weren't my vibe honestly. Her lectures are just reading the slides and having bigger assignments on your own time. Her exams are timed with written essays that really weren't manageable at times since it's a detailed oriented question. Glad this class is over with but good luck!
Her lectures almost have nothing to do with the exams. the lecture slides are just pictures and she just talks about them. Most of the time, tests are nothing like the lectures and you actually have to look in the book to find out those answers. Tests are open note and one gets dropped at end of semester, but tests are still hard if you don't read.
Please take a different professor if you can. This shouldn't be a "101" level science course. The exams are ridiculous with 40 multiple choices and 5 written responses within 1hr and 15 min. Laura reads off the slides and assigns tons of papers & takes 10 years to grade one thing. I really didn't like this class at all with the style & teaching.
One of the easiest classes I've taken at Loyola, her quizzes were open notes and there was a final book report which was open-ended so I did a podcast. I genuinely learned a lot during this class and you could tell the professor cared about what she taught. Would 100% take again.
Dr. Brenter is a really nice person, but she is a very dry lecturer. She gives several impromptu "in-class" assignments that are easy enough to make up if you skip. Her class is easy enough and the tests are open note, but the grading criteria for several assignments were a bit unclear. Overall a good class for core credit.
Very unprofessional and even rude sometimes towards students asking for guidance. Does not take personal situations seriously and uses every bit of leverage she has to make the student feel out of their place for asking specific questions. Class is easy, but be prepared for mental strain if you go to her for help.
This class requires you to stay on top of your work. Itll be tough if you dont pay attention in lectures or dont attend class. She is extremely knowledgeable + passionate about the subject and very willing to help if youre struggling. Quizzes and in class Q&As makeup your grade but theyre not super difficult if you do the required work.
Professor Brentner is an amazing and kind professor! Environmental chemistry was difficult and she didn't do the best job at teaching some of the harder concepts but the tests are taken at home so it's not hard to get a good grade. The whole class is out of 100 points so stay on top of it. You do homework together most times which is nice
Dr. Brentner was a really great professor. She made it clear what was expected of us and everything was manageable. She was very accommodating and nice. Quizzes aren't difficult if you study, and instead of a final we have a book report and a project. This class was informative and I would definitely take a class with Dr. Brentner again.
She provides a lot of resources like study guides and practice exams which are helpful but I find her lectures really hard to follow. She doesn't answer questions very often and if she does the answers are usually pretty confusing. We do get a cheat sheet for exams which makes all the difference but sometimes the questions are still pretty tricky.
Lectures are incredibly hard to follow. Lecture note outlines and slides are provided but there are information gaps everywhere. Exams are just balancing chemical equations, which she assumes everyone knows how to do prior to the class. If you do not have a strong chemistry background it is incredibly hard to keep up with the course.
Homework, a few exams, an essay which isn't bad. BUT the lectures are hard to follow, the course is fast-paced, and it can be challenging to follow and understand everything thrown at you. The exams are 20pts with most questions being worth 2 points making it hard to do well considering you get two wrong and are already at an 80.
Dr. Brentner is incredibly knowledgable and her lectures were clear. I truly learned a lot in this class and despite it being somewhat writing heavy, the workload is balanced and never overwhelming. She is kind and flexible, I highly recommend taking her class if possible.
her lectures are kinda boring since its a lot of baseline info on envi sci. there are four online tests including the final, lowest one gets dropped and final project thats worth 10 points (the class is all of out 100 points) its not difficult at all. there are also 5 reflection essays that are 500 words each, not difficult just kind of annoying yk
Class was tons of work. Professor was very knowledgable and professional, but she went incredibly fast during lectures. Tests were open note. Textbook optional.
nice profeesor overall and is very accomodation and understanding and is always eager to help with confusing topics, only fault is fast lectures
This class has a lot of chemistry, which can be tough if you haven't done chemistry in a while, but Prof. Brentner is great and explains everything very well. Definitely reccomend.
This was my second time taking Prof. Brentner and she was still fantastic. She is incredibly knowledgable and makes somewhat boring topics interesting and accessible. Her online resources are very well-organized and make the class much more manageable. Take her!!!
Overall amazing professor. Helps you understand the material better if you just ask. A lot of papers and writing, but be diligent and it will pay off. People say the lectures are fast, but if you have a background in environmental science or biology, you'll be fine. Half of the stuff people get confused with isn't tested.
Super sweet professor, a little scatter brained at times but overall a good class. I'd say I learn 90% of it in APES. There is a weekly short paper due and exams are take home so its really nice. all reading material is provided as well.
I love Dr. Brentner! She really cares about what she teaches, but this does mean that sometimes she goes on a tangent and her lectures can get a little boring. She gives you study guides that have everything you need to know for exams and there are papers due every other week. Overall she's an awesome professor and I would highly recommend.
Dr. Brentner is a fine professor that is very passionate and knowledgeable about environmental science. The class is easy if you pay attention during her lectures, which can be hard as they aren't the most engaging. She is very clear about what you need to know for the 2 tests.
Dr. Brentner is very passionate about environmental science, so if you're majoring then she is a great resource. The class can be very lecture heavy, but she is very willing to answer questions and work with you on rough spots and there isn't a ton of homework. Her exams can be tricky, but if you study enough, then you should have no problems.
Dr. Brentner was a great professor. Her lectures can drag on, but the information is important for her tests. Attendance is not mandatory, but she will give participation assignments randomly to encourage attendance. No final exam for her class and only two tests the whole semester. She is very passionate and understanding.
Laura Brentner is a solid professor with a great personality who truly wants her students to succeed. She's accessible and helpful outside of class. However, her lectures and slides are hard to follow and a bit disorganized. The material is challenging if you're not strong in chem, but I managed to pass without much prior experience. I rec tho!
Dr. Brentner's class is super easy. The quizzes are all open note, so as long as you listen in class, you're fine.Only 4 quizzes per semester. The final is being able to retake 2. No homework, other than an occasional question. However, time is given in class for it. Study guides and practice quizzes provided.Attendance credit is a in-class question.
Overall, a really great professor. She is a very engaging lecturer and makes sure you have all the material you need for the exams. I especially enjoyed the Book Club assignment!
Genuinely it is almost impossible to get anywhere below an A in this class seriously unless you absolutely bomb the tests which is pretty hard to do if you try to study. The only bad thing is that she puts extremely specific niche things on her exams and you never know what you're gonna get. Overall so caring & reach out if you need help!
great teacher, its hard to get a bad grade unless you dont study for the exams at all. shes also very nice and caring and allows you to retake them both as the final. shes very sweet.
Dr. Brentner is the perfect professor to take if you're not a STEM major but need the ENVS Core requirement. Her class is very easy as long as you take notes and participate. All the quizzes are open note. She gives you practice quizzes and study guides, too. Everything is easy to understand and she gives very good feedback and emails back quickly.
Dr. Brent Brentner was the best professor I've ever had. If you're struggling with any of her classes, go to her office hours and she'll try to help you. Exams are quite easy, but study the slides and read to get a better grade, but if you aren't satisfied with the grade you get you can retake the exams again.
