Good prof - she knows what she is talking about. She assumed the class has an already established background knowledge of lecture material.
The material isn't terribly interesting but she makes it a lot worse. She has no personality and goes extremely slowly. She has no idea how to lecture, going slow and pausing awkwardly. Is entirely uncomfortable in front of the class. Seems nice but just killed this class for me.
I found the classes very dragged out and she goes too slow as someone else also mentioned. She knows what she's talking about but the class is super awkward and dull. She usually puts on a movie after a mid term that she does put on the next mid term even though 90% of the ppl leave.
Absolutely dull class and horrid professor. Had no control over the students during lectures, was frequently drowned out by chatter. Tests were ridiculous and often unfair, with left-field material that was breezed over in lectures. Never rewarded the few brave souls who went to her awful lectures with hints for tests etc. Not to mention very rude.
Made material boring. Material was easy enough to understand, however midterms were ridiculously hard. Seemed to ask questions about material that wasn't too relevant, or wanted answers to be too in depth. Final was slightly easier.
It's a rare talent to make natural disasters sound boring (note the sarcasm). I would sit through an entire class and learn virtually nothing, the quizzes were on irrelevant details, the midterm was incredibly hard. Warning: the content sounds cool, but it isn't.. take something else especially if you're an arts major!
This class wasn't bad, she did make it boring (I think it was just her voice..). The content was interesting, but the midterms and the final were really hard. Not a horrible professor, but if your taking a 2-3 hour night class... good luck.
She is very knowledgable but the night class got boring by the end of it. If you study hard and LEARN the material (learn not memorize) then you will do well. The material was interesting, but I was ready to fall asleep at the end of the 3 hour lecture. Lectures are vital for quizzes and the exams! Write down everything she says.
Definitely agree with the others. Content is very interesting i actually enjoyed reading the textbook, however the quizzes and midterm had irrelevant content in relation to what was taught in class. Lectures are very boring and now thinking about it, were not worth going to. I HIGHLY recommend taking another class, she is not worth it.
The content is interesting, but hastily made into sleep inducing material what with the dry lectures. We learned that highly viscous means "slow flowing", I suppose the class is very viscous then.
she is so so so so so so so so so boring.. The course, once you actually learn it, IS AWESOME. The text is a MUST! I literally learned nothing from her and everything from the text book. her tests and quizzes are stupidly hard though. SO frustrating. study a lot and you'll be alright.
A good professor. Some people complain that shes boring but she does a good job presenting the material clearly. Just have to work a bit to pay attention. She answered everybodies questions fully and was pretty helpful.
Pretty boring; yes, she teaches everything fairly clearly, but it's very hard to pay attention and stay interested during her lectures. The first half of the course was pretty dull but the second was great. Midterm was very hard, but the final was easy. Do well on the labs and you'll be fine.
I actually enjoyed her as a prof and started to like Geog. enough to change my major. I fall asleep in classes and didn't do that problem in hers. Her notes were helpfull to follow along with b/c you do have to pay attention to write what she says along with the pics/diagrams. I found her interesting and a lot of pics were from where she's been
She is one of the best professors I ever took class with, she gives perfect examples and exactly knows what she is teaching and what the students want. Some times the lecture can be boring, but it is not a major thing especially for the person who really wants to get real knowledge, and maybe with time she will be more professional in teaching.
Lectures are pretty dry. Exam review isn't much of a help. Lots of content to cover. Labs are hard to understand sometimes. Information poorly given in labs. Kind teacher though.
Dr. Brown is a caring and kind prof who is interested in her field and tries very hard to help her students understand. The lectures can get very dry and boring, and the material covered in class does not necessarily help you complete the weekly labs. Her in-class exam review was very helpful and she posted "primers" to explain topics.
Very nice prof but seems so unorganized, doesn't post any helpful info on course link or update anyone. Lecture is 3hrs and so dry and boring and doesn't even have to be that long. Lab assignments are easy and one of the only things you are graded on besides midterm and exam.
Lecture is very dry, unaware of what she's talking about. Nobody is really paying attention since its not interesting. Labs are tedious and mostly make up your grade.
Dr. Brown is really nice and really passionate about what she teaches... outside of the class. In lecture these 3hrs become the longest hours of your life. With dry monotone voice making you fall asleep to the heavy load of information taught this course is so hard for a first year class. Labs are not covered in throughly lecture although biweekly
I would give my life for this woman
This is my favourite course I've taken so far, Dr. Brown is super passionate about what she does and has many stories tying in to lecture content. Lecture participation is graded from online questions that she'll assign in class but they're easy as long as you pay attention. Would recommend the hour long lecture, the three hour ones get boring.
Very dull lectures. Lectures can be dry and not captivating. Does not post fill in the blank parts of lecture online.
Lectures are very text-heavy and long. With the COVID-19 situation, she set her email to being remote and late replies but kept the final exam worth 42% regardless of it being moved online and lack of resources, plus said it is on all lectures, labs, textbook, and previous lectures prior to midterm when most profs canceled/made optional/easier
Does not post the blanks from her lectures, which are outdated and reused. Very boring to listen to, and the online textbook is the worst but mandatory.
Her lectures were easy to understand and is very good at getting back to you and answering questions in a way thats easy to understand. Wasnt very much assignments (only 2) and they were easy as long as you keep up with the lectures she gives out. Quizzes were very straightforward and it was easy to get good marks. Overall amazing professor!
She replies to emails a bit late but I know she had personal reasons so perhaps that is why. Thats also likely why she didnt explain our 2nd assignment too well. There were only 2 assignments, both easy, and small quizzes that were easy too. Easy marker too so not bad
I thought she was a great person and have a lot of strong lectures.
Dr. Brown was a really great professor who delivered very interesting and engaging lectures through live and video lectures. weekly quizzes were manageable with only two assignments that were straightforward.
Lectures are very boring and challenging to listen to. Her weekly online quizzes are extremely challenging and are far too complex for the time allowed. Each question has paragraphs of writing and explanations, and each multiple-choice option is long and unclear. The online midterm is even worse. This prof goes out of her way to make tests hard.
Dr. Brown is organized and consistent with her material. Online lectures are broken up into sections and easy to follow. If you studied, the midterm was straightforward. Interesting class if you like geo, course work is manageable, and she is a nice prof. who asks for student feedback frequently.
ALL of stuff on the quizzes and tests are DIRECTLY quoted from her lectures. Her online exams are even open book. If you watch the lectures and take detailed (computer) notes you will sail through (use cmd F!) I also take screenshots of her slide diagrams to add because she always uses the exact same pics on her tests! If you need help? Email her!
Most boring class ever. the prof is okay but can be boring. it is a lot of information and its supposedly a bird course but in reality it is not
Literally sucks, I'd rather watch paint dry for hours then listen to her lectures.
Horrible lecturer. Her notes are so bad and the textbook for the course also sucks.
I found the lecture notes to not be very helpful and reluctantly kept relying on the textbook. The class is extremely unorganized on course link. The labs were a complete mess with VARIOUS errors. I had completed a lab only to find out she sent the one FROM LAST SEM. I had to redo EVERYTHING. I've never had a class with so many errors and issues.
I just got handed back material today last minute that I need for my exam tomorrow. Very unprofessional and discourteous for the students
Good Prof, go to the class and you'll get all you need to succeed
Most average prof ever. Simply does her job. Lots of content but not too difficult of stuff. Marked only on labs (5 at 5% each), midterm (35%), weekly quizzes (15%), and final exam (35%). Straightforward grading expectations. Teaches content well but some stuff is useless (i.e., random places as examples of something). Overall not bad.
Good professor, interesting class. Was graded in 4 categories- quizzes, labs, midterm, and exam. If you go to the lectures you will do well.
pros: bird class cons: slides are chaotic, shes not organized, and takes days to answer emails
if you want a bird course choose a different one.
Easy course outline, weekly quizzes, labs, midterm and exam. Lectures were very helpful. Labs were fun but there were often errors in the lab questions.
At first I didn't like her but she really grew on me. The content isn't card if you just go to class and take notes on the slides. The textbook is free but I barely used it. Besides 2 assignments everything is multiple choice and a lot of exam questions are take from the small weekly quizes
One of my favourite classes. Lectures go by fast and are interesting. Only 2 assignments, 1 midterm, and 1 final exam.
Professor Brown was very caring. It was obvious that she wanted her students to succeed and she was very knowledgeable in what she was teaching. She used current events to connect our learning to the real world and was able to answer every question that was asked. Would definitely take a course taught by her again.
This course was just A LOT to try and absorb. It's one of the courses that you should try to avoid taking at 8:30 in the morning. The assignments for this course were actually really fun to do and not hard to get near 90s on. She lets you have cheat sheets for the online exams too.
I really enjoyed her lectures. She's nice and you can tell she cares about her students. Regarding the course, the content is not difficult but it covers a lot of topics and can be overwhelming to study for exams. I did best by reading the textbook and going to lectures, so it was a bit time consuming.
Really enjoyed the subject matter and the lectures were relevant. Attend classes and you will pass no problem!
Professor Brown is a very kind and intelligent prof, but I just hated the class. The content is a LOT to learn and there's a quiz every week. She records and posts the lectures online which is very nice of her to do. The midterm and exam were very difficult, as they're online, but you're given barely any time. I liked the prof, just not the class.
I would say that Professor Brown was nice. But, this class is very difficult and in my opinion, it is not considered a bird course. There are so MUCH things to memorize and write as well as two 2-3 page assignments and a quiz every week. The midterm and exam were brutal. If I have gotten the chance I wouldn't do this class again
This prof skipped the intro to the Bill Nye the Science Guy video. Nuff said.
Good class! Fair and interesting. A field trip too which was really fun.
Dr. Brown is anything but caring, understanding, or accommodating. She doesn't care to see you succeed and refuses to accommodate your needs. 2 group projects, weekly quizzes, midterm exam, and final exam not too bad. Coming from a third year, she's the meanest professor I have had so far.
If you need a bird course, don't take this. Lots of info so unless you're actually interested in geography. Okay prof, but boring sometimes. Two group projects. Same group for the second project so pray you choose good group mates the first time. Weekly quizzes on the material, mark booster if you do well. Online midterm and exam.
I do not like the content in this course at all but prof. Brown is such a great person. I bombed the midterm and she met with me personally to help me develop my study methods. Definitely go to class (online or in person). I wish I went more because I feel like it would have not been as hard as I found it to be.
Interesting at first but got bored quick (personally). Attendance not mandatory, not much added in lecture that isn't on slides posted. Online exams. Nice enough but lacks engagement with students. BUT (!!) large % of grade is two awful group projects with same groups, would be decent assignments if on our own but format hard to do in a group...
Loved Dr Brown, super kind and you could tell she cared about her students and the subject. would take again!
This class is super easy if you're looking for a GPA booster for your semester. Textbook is also free if you find you need it.
Generally a good prof and answers emails fast. However keep in mind there are lots of quizzes and 3 assignments each worth a lot of your grade. Her lectures are easy to read but assignment info and rubrics are not. Did not even give a textbook.
Tons of assignments with little to no help understanding the desired outcome of them. 0 example texts for assignments. Extremely generalized rubrics/outlines for projects even though the professor clearly wants specific subjects to be studied. Lack of weekly updates to keep you on track with the current work/assignments.
Does not care if her students succeed or not. Her outlines for projects are so laughably bad it makes you question her command of the english language. Gets TA's to grade all her assignments. Is snide when students repeat questions to her instead of being accomadating. No discernable passion for teaching, just going through the motions.
every single assignment is a group project, and the instructions are so unclear they're basically useless. final exam is 50 questions in 50 minutes - what is that about? i'm not stupid, but I would prefer more than 1 minute per question. it is so obvious she doesn't care about her students and just wants a cheque. this class made me drop out of geo
Immature, inconsiderate and downright deprecating professor. Told me through email that it was my fault I missed the quiz when several students raised concerns about not being able to see the quiz. To question my integrity as a student for something that wasn't my fault isn't something I will ever stand for. You're better off dropping this course.
i see a lot of bad grading but honestly i rlly liked her as a prof! i took her for one other class and only really struggled with the sheer amount of reading material you had to cover in time for weekly quizzes. also the exam was 50 questions in 50min which . wasn't set up well, but other than that she seemed very sweet + knowledgeable
Do not listen to the previous positive review, 100% sure it's a TA writing it or the prof herself. She is rude and does not care about your accommodations. Very dismissive towards personal issues.
She responds to emails using GPT, when the course content mentions how we shouldn't be using AI, lied about what was on the exam(mentioned we wouldn't need to memorize specific facts or percentages, got at least 2-3 questions involving those), and when I pointed this out she said it was "relative magnitude." Not a good prof, avoid if you can.
the lectures are not it. it's not engaging and she's incredibly rude. you also aren't able to join the zoom meetings unless you're strictly online.
Awful experience. Her class was very boring and she is not a helpful professor. I taught myself everything and she marks bad. I would say do not take a class with her... there is much better profs and classes to take.
Highly unorganized and lacks attention to detail. - You are not able to email the course email (emails bounce back) - unit quiz questions from future units we haven't started yet were on the quiz - an announcement + video saying midterm grades have been released, when they haven't - Also not a fan of Respondus. It's invasive and acts like a virus.
Never responds to students questions until after the quiz/test is due and done. Emails bounce back. Readings are heavy. Grades extremely hard and posts answer keys that are not even related to what's on the tests. Least helpful professor.
SHE USES AI TO COMMUNICATE WITH STUDENTS. SHE USES AI AND SHE THINKS NO ONE KNOWS. COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL
Honestly I kind of liked her, but in a person way. She has a dry sense of humor and I like the pictures in her lectures, as well as her videos but.... Its very reading heavy and you end up teaching yourself everything and as you get later in the semester the lectures become less useful. Overall not a bird course, and lowkey hard.
profs like this open my eyes to the absolute scam the school pulls off. what a disgrace
It was bad do not take this course.
Do not take this course, wow........
I suggest taking any other course to get your natural science credits.
I found that the exams and quizzes were much more complicated then the content we were learning making it hard to study for them and do well
I think that everyone is being very dramatic about her being disorganized. There were a few mishaps throughout the semester (ie. grading some questions questions, quizzes not loading, etc), but she quickly addressed them and fixed the issues. The quizzes and midterms have been extremely fair as long as you actually read the content posted.
I took this class as a lib elective in my 4th yr because I had taken other geo classes in previous yrs and really enjoyed them. This class was not the case. Dr. Browns tests are set up in a way that leaves little room for error (multi-select Q's are all or nothing). As someone who enjoys geography, this class was dreadful. Would not recommend
I reached out a few times during office hours and was always super helpful and kind. The course is heavy, and testing is hard, but she gives cheat sheet options, which were very appreciated. Dr. Brown shows interesting videos and pictures to go with her lessons, and sometimes also adds personal stories, which kept me hooked.
bad, doesn't care about her work at all.
Honestly this professor is easy, but she used Ai to email you back if she even does, she doesn't listen to students concerns in the discussion box and won't even reply to most. The course was relatively easy but she makes the exams and all tests marked on an all or nothing basis so you can't even get half marks. 3/10
