a very knowledgable and helpful professor. a strong woman. speaks her mind, you always know where you stand.
Teaches very black and white, which is fantastic for such a potentially killer class. She's great, but she will point you out if you try and bail early!
Not very lucid in her preparation for the course. often confused which in turn leads to more confusion on the part of students.
you do not know where the class is going during the class
she does not know how to teach but she knows how to set a hard question for u..
INSANE!!! who knows what she is thinking or where she is going next. She gives really hard assignments but gives no help. Worst class i've ever taken!!
She is lazy, period, but she is not too bad, just a tough marker.
they don't come much worse than this instructor; totally disorganized; tests are ridiculously unfair; she can really screw up the GPA;
Terrible! Terrible! So Terrible!
In general, she is helpful,I think.
A strong, smart woman. She has awesome ideals that I think make her stand out in her department. Very nice person, would like to work more closely with her.
Not a great prof. Talks too fast and tries to seem smart when she is not an expert in the material she's teaching. Doesn't seem to care about the students.
She was great! Very helpful and will always make her self available for you. She is a excellent professor to have a class with. Very bright and active!
Super quick at replying for emails when you asked for help. Really friendly and patient during office hours. You can tell she really cares and wants to make sure that students understand. Final exam was really fair, even though she could have asked really tough questions. Made course material relevant to current day issues.
Really enjoyed her class. She has a very dry sense of humour. She is very fair in my opinion, exams were what I expected. I really like how she got us to use MyEconLab. Study plan really helped prep for her exam, even though it is a lot of work outside of class. Assignments every week. Would take another class with Dr. Brown though.
Great Prof, dry sense of humor and passionate lectures. You have to go to class, and you'll likely have to write a paper but she is a fair marker, who is very communicative.
horrible I wish there was a different professor teaching international trade.. she just kills my interest in this topic...
Excellent prof. She is thorough
Would not recommend. Find another prof who will effectively and properly pace the course for you to learn.
I'd recommend taking Econ2362 with her. DO NOT. I repeat, DO NOT take 2010 with her. She always looked confused in the class and couldn't bring lectures down to student's level. She's a very nice woman though.
Very caring, always willing to move tests/homework deadlines should you have any time conflicts or feel stress from the University workload. Great first year prof! Takes the time to actually know her students. Definitely recommend taking your course with her!
Felt like I wasn't learning from the lectures, only the textbook. For Econ1010 would not recommend, she doesn't know how to teach an intro class like this but I'm sure her more advanced ones are better. Tests every week online. Notes must be taken by hand unless you sign a paper for her and sit in the front row.
She was quite rude to the students. Lectures were pointless, so you need to focus your time and effort on the textbook. Tests are every week online, but she does let you change the day you write if you have a valid reason (like an appointment/work/midterm the next day/ etc). Still would not recommend at all.
amazing prof. very knowledgeable
I will never take another class with Prof Brown again. Having taken advanced Finance classes and finished with A's, ECON 2010 is the most difficult course I have ever taken, and not for lack of effort. Highly recommend you do your research before taking this course with her. The breadth of topics covered could easily fill two courses.
The course was poorly organized, there were multiple different sources that were required to be utilized as the student but not clearly laid out in any way by the prof. Lecture videos were horrendously painful to pay attention to. I often found that i was seeking outside sources to get a better understanding of the concepts .
The worst class ever in U of M
Professor Laura Brown shouldn't be teaching this course. -You have to attend lectures to get "You do" credit even though the lectures are useless -Very quiet and sighs all the time -Course in unorganized, presents powerpoint that make no sense Please do not take this course and if you have the textbook will be your teacher.
Don't take this course your GPA will be destroyed not because the course is hard but because you will have no idea what to study. The powerpoints are filled with junk. overall i don't understand how she is allowed to teach this course
Slides are hard to follow and are filled irrelevant "fluff" unrelated to topics. lectures are boring and hard to sit through but has "you do" assignments during class time worth marks making attendance important. Her examples seem unprepared and drawn up on the spot.
worst prof at u of m. all exams cumulative and doesn't match up to class work. would not recommend taking any of her classes
One of my worst experiences at UOM. She barely knows her material, tons of slides, her classes are equally boring, and she will pick at you if you don't pay attention to her class. oh, and you cant miss her class too. Her tests never match with class material. Get ready to get your CGPA a downfall. AVOID, I repeat AVOID her classes.
Awful prof. Just had a midterm and she forced all students who were seemingly friends to change spots to prevent cheating. Lectures are dull at best but you have to attend to get your participation marks. Computers not really permitted. Not funny but tries to be. Youll have an assignment due every week. Thinks her class is above all. Avoid Laura.
Worst prof I have ever had! Not helpful at all make sure you read the text book!
best prof
My experience seems contrary to the ordinary, I found her lectures helpful and intuitive, while the tests weren't as bad for me as the general consensus seems to be. Lectures are absolutely necessary, and all the exams are cumulative, so be sure you know everything by intuition come exam time.
Assigns three mandatory assignments every single week. In her tiny little mind, her class is the only one you are taking. Gives a total of three midterms so she can "keep you engaged in her class" and finds it necessary to grade you on attendance when her lectures actually consist of nothing of value. If you take this awful prof you must buy text.
The class was boring. She only read the PPT, and interrupted the students' questions. In addition, the difficulty of the exam content is completely beyond the book knowledge and homework. If you want to get a high score, please practice hard by yourself.
worst class I ever took. we had 3 assignments due every week plus had to send in my notes every week. I swear she thought no one was in a full course load as I was constantly behind in her class. her lectures were so long and boring and barely made sense. her tests were "only move forward" so i was constantly rushing because we had little time
Super boring and useless lectures but you have to attend all of them for participation marks. Her PowerPoints are hard to follow and she does a very bad job at answering questions clearly. Three assignments every week, plus you have to upload your notes. The questions on tests and final are way more difficult than assignments and textbook material
Took her class on my first term in Uni and I can say that she truly cares for her students and responds to emails at a reasonable time. Her slides are sometimes confusing, gives decent examples in each chapter. Her tests are somewhat hard, page forward and timed. Overall, would recommend her as your prof if your planning to take ECON1010!
She was really straight forward about what she wanted done. As long as you join all her lectures, take notes from her posted lecture notes, and read the textbook if you have trouble understanding the hard topics, youll be fine. Marks are distributed really well too so if you get a poor grade on one assignment it isnt the end of the world.
Her handwriting is so bad , you cant understand a single thing written. Her uploaded video quality is also very bad . Tons of homework and she will not even grade sometimes .You need to earn participation marks and no guarantee if she will give you those marks . If you can study on your own than only take this course otherwise you will suffer.
Honestly the best Prof I've ever had. Extremely fair in marking and assignment difficulty. Engaging lectures and explains everything very well. I didn't have to study much outside of class to understand the material well so it really made it an enjoyable class.
Honestly, out of all the professors that I've chosen, Laura was the only prof under 4/5 stars. However, at the end of the day, she ended up being my best prof. She was extremely engaging and was always ready to extend the class lecture past the class schedule (even by an hour) just to help students have a proper understanding of the class.
Kind person. Not super tech-savvy but not to the point where it was an issue. The textbook was referenced although she taught everything in lectures so the textbook's role was secondary (i.e. I only used it to double-check concepts I had trouble with). When in-person you must attend. Online, attendance is optional. Graded on plenty of things.
The PowerPoints are just big walls of text with unnecessary examples and roundabout ways of explaining ideas. She also speeds through the slides that I can't write anything down so I can't get the notes down. 3 assignments a week that you have to take on a website you have to pay $90 for.
interrupted lectures every time a student came late into class, and then eventually started forcing them to give reasons for being late. told them not to come to class if they were gonna be late more than 10 minutes, and then sent us all an email encouraging us to drop if we we're failing, even after the VW date had come and gone. her lectures suck
although she spreads out the tests assignments notes equally, so you can work it up if u did badly on a test, she is strict about being late but attendance isnt mandatory like she isn't going to know if youre not there, but if you walk in late or leave early she doesnt like that.If you just listen to her in class high chance you will do great
She was easily distracted, but the class was easy. 10% of the grade was from uploading your notes, most profs don't do that.
Its not hard to attend class on time. If thats the only thing you want to do for an A, then this is your class. Teacher has very generous grading. She speaks clearly with a microphone. She goes fast with her presentation slides, so make sure you jot the necessary information quickly. Material is easy to remember and very intriguing.
please get ready to attend classes early and also know that you might start to feel sleepy in some of these classes. you cannot miss any classes and when anything happens out of your control and you are five minutes late get ready to lose a mark from your score. get ready to think a lot and have a high blood pressure from this course.
i like to think she cares about her students. dont come late! she'll probably make a big fuss about it in front of the whole class.. but her grading system is great you get marks for uploading notes and doing easy assignments.
She gives lots of opportunities to help your grade through weekly assignments (and simply uploading notes taken from class). She wants students to succeed and answers questions with no problem. Tests are not too bad as long as you keep up with lectures and do the assignments. Material is pretty straight forward and she is a great professor.
Super nice prof, she's so sweet, and I love her class. Just don't be late, and get your work done. :)
she is so extra. she'll make you upload notes, do 4 assignments weekly, make discussion posts, all for us to go to her lectures and she just reads off the slides. not engaging at all, and a very frustrating class, as she gives you so many different things to juggle all at once instead of just teaching clearly, and making sure we know what we should
A well-intentioned prof but makes unnecessary political comments, reads off 40-90 page slideshows (which are just walls of text) every lecture, too many assignments (4/week) - gets to the point where you're just phoning things in and not trying to understand concepts. Notes have errors, repeat the same concept (in different words) over and over.
mandatory lectures, if you late by more than 5 mins she doesn't want you to come, also cant leave early. she's very homework heavy, so if you do your homework but bomb the tests you will still be alright. her lectures are not great, she makes unnecessary political comments, only MCQ on tests.
lectures are insanely boring. gives so much homework. makes you hand in so many different things, it all starts to pile up quickly. she is a little crazy too when it comes to test days and ppl being late. overall, not an enjoyable course as the lectures seem really lazy and she just reads off the slides. we got also tested on stuff she didnt teach.
She voices her opinions on things very strongly, she is very rude if people are coming in late or leaving early, even if you are asking a question to your friend she will stop the whole class unnecessarily. Although there is a lot of homework I like it because it gives you extra easily attainable points towards your grade.
Yikes. If I wasn't already put to sleep from her unengaging lectures, then I was busy cringing at one of her continuous rude remarks to a student for entering late, excusing themselves, asking their friends a question, or just anything you would expect a human student to do. If you like feeling uncomfortable, this class is definitely for you.
She's an okay professor. Not great, but not terrible. Lectures were dull, but overall, she does a good job explaining concepts, offers plenty of help to students to need it, and is readily accessible outside of class for further clarification. The course can get tedious, but if you put in the effort, it should be very easy to pass.
Though she can be very particular about certain aspects of her class (i.e., late students and exam seating arrangement), Laura's organization and attention to detail makes learning Microeconomics a breeze. Slides are well-prepared and great for self-paced learning. She is passionate about this field, and easy to learn from.
With all due respect to the university and the professor, I was enthusiastic about my 1st year in university until I took the ECON1010 class. Laura's lectures are just reading from the slides. Her midterms and final exams are really difficult compared to what we take in class.
Exams are very hard and she is quite rude. Ruined economics for me.
Speeds through lecture slides and rarely pauses to review or adequately explain material being presented. Gives many opportunities for extra credit and practice (easy online assignments etc.). Test questions were vague and seemed purposely misleading. Frequently stops lectures to call out latecomers or people going to the washroom.
Attendence counts towards your final grade. her lectures were her just reading the lecture slides she sent and not necessarily explaining. I felt like attending the classes was a waste of time, but I had to. The tests are extremely EXTREMELY hard. You really have to study a lot abd go into detail. I wouldnt take this course again.
Laura is the most dedicated professor. The course was heavy. But with film assignments, sending notes, and discussion posts, it is so easy to get your marks up. Her deadlines are good, and she responds to questions and problems. I would highly recommend her. Yes she reads from slides, but she also explains alongside it, with tons of examples. Loved
Laura was a really nice and engaging professor, she was really funny and devoted extra time outside class to helping us learn the concepts.
Laura is a fantastic teacher. I looked for as many classes as possible from her this upcoming semester. Her classes aren't easy, but it isn't like you spend hours and hours on homework every night, and attendance isn't mandatory. She takes marks off if you're late because you interrupt her class, but she takes no marks off if you don't show up.
Couldn't keep up with the course: 4 or 5 assignments a week with quizzes and simulation games. Notes must be uploaded, being late loses marks, and attendance is mandatory. She just reads slides and gets distracted with a story. I gave up listening in class and just played Tetris. Term tests were difficult. rude to TA/Graders by yelling at them.
Very bad instructor i ever had in my life
You are assumed to just know things. Felt like i didn't learn much, completely confused concepts with each other. Was interested in economics but this class changed my mind. Avoid
Please don't waste your time taking this professor. Whatever she teaches never came in the exam and she will make sure that most of the students fail the course. BIG NO TO THIS PROF!!!!!!!
Laura is great! I went to every lecture and there was nothing on the tests or final that she didn't go over in class. She did multiple examples per class that were almost the same as test questions. She's also just kinda funny and gives lots of real world examples for the concepts. Economics must be the easiest major if she's the toughest prof.
Very bad. Not best in economics professor
It is week 2 of her class. Laura is extremely rude, mean, and makes nasty, unnecessary comments to make you feel uncomfortable. First class I've heard of where you get marks off for coming late. She goes off on random tangents and can bore you to death. Positive is that she speaks English and is clear and understandable. Wouldn't take again.
The Worst. Very rude, treats class like children. definitely makes it feel like it would be shameful to meet for help. highly recommend avoiding this prof.
All she does is read off slides, gives a ton of assignments, and stops the class way too much about people coming late.
tells many unrelated stories
If you want to be on edge all class, complete an INSANE amount of homework due every week, submit your notes, and participate in mandatory attendance, Laura is your lady. On top of that, being late to class by just ten minutes will result in Laura pausing her (boring/unorganized) lecture to very rudely call you out. Would not recommend
Rudest prof I've ever had. Makes the class about her personal life, treats you like a child, harasses you if you're sick, and shows zero professionalism towards anyone whatsoever. She doesn't prep for her lessons, therefore gets every question she does wrong on the board and makes the students figure it out. Remarkable she is employed.
Kept stopping the class to talk about how disruptive students going to the washroom quietly was. instead of continuing with the lecture. Same with students showing up late, stops the lecture and tells them its disruptive and goes on a rant for a few more minutes.
DONT YOU DARE GO TO THE WASHROOM DURING CLASS WITH LAURA AROUND
Often stops class to yell ARRET to random students who are doing literally anything. Also calls out students who are late at all. Furthermore has a mandatory $100 textbook. Which has 3 assignments weekly. Also yells at her TAs. PS: Calls out ADULTS like children if you use the washroom, she wants PERMISSION for ADULTS to use the washroom. 2/10
Treats students like children, and often meanders into unrelated topics during lectures. God forbid you need to use the washroom, you'll be called out, and a limit of people leaving the lecture might be put in place. Never again
These other ratings are pretty harsh. Laura isn't all that bad. Yes you get called out if you're late or need to go to the washroom, but her lectures are good. Attendance isn't really mandatory, unless it's the iclickers, but you won't be docked points off for not being there. Her slides are very detailed too and she explains concepts well.
I thought that this prof was overly controlling, students pay to be at university to learn. So what if someone is running late or has to use the bathroom. Get ready to feel like yout in elementary.
She's very bad at explaining easy concepts, and that makes the class harder than it actually is. A lot of the info on the tests is not mentioned in any of the assignments, nor in her lectures, so you need to do bajillion readings. She was just generally insufferable
Laura gets more hate than she deserves, she was just alright. Personally, the class was boring regardless of who was teaching it. She's very hard and strict on the class to scare away the strays for the first month or two and then she's bearable.
Lots of little assignments but you can get 100% so that makes tests/final less important. However she treats her class often like high school - scolded for being late and/or going to bathroom, or being on your phone or talking with friends. Often goes on tangents about her personal life which is boring but otherwise she is ok I guess
Laura is a good economics prof, however is very opinion based in her teaching. Stops the class whenever someone leaves or comes in the class. and just reads of the power points.
Honestly, most of these reviews are pretty harsh. I went into this class as a first year with no ideas what to expect. The homework she assigns is super helpful and while the lectures were useless I didn't find it hard to score a decent grade.
