Boring. Found myself nodding off in her lectures. Repeats herself far too many times, does not engage the class very well. Teaches more as though she is in a high school rather than a university. Wrote unnecessary information on the board.
She. talks. so. slow. I cannot listen as slow as she talks. Reads out her PowerPoint slides, highlighting the words as she goes, as if we otherwise wouldn't be able to figure out where she was reading from. Pleasant lady but acts like she is teaching a Kindergarten class.
She highlights every single word, picture, detail... ugh. Boring classes, ridiculous grading system that basically requires you to go to the TA, as her expectations are as clear a brick wall.
she highlights more words than not. she moves at a glacial pace. she refuses to answer our questions about any assignments but rather to go to the TAs. she's nice but dull. her eyes can see into your soul.
Well, her power point slides are the highlights of the textbook, and for guidance only. You still have to read the textbook. That's why I appreciate her highlighting stuffs, but I guess everyone is different.
Great professor, easy to follow. Really onjoyed it.
Avoid. She admonished a guy for not coming to class during class time and in front of the rest of the class. Exam expectations seem clear until you get to the exam and she won't repeat them. Regurgitate what's on her slides and you could get an A+ or a C. Covered almost no material, and everything taught twice. Abrassive and unapproachable.A waste of my time and money.
I suppose the previous comment must have come from someone from Section E. The guy dised the prof by openly admitting that he went to vacation instead of coming to her class. Anybody would have been offended by that. About her lectures, I find her teaching method quite effective and clear, and she had two office hours to help us out.
Crystal clear, creates an excellent atmosphere to study. She's always there to help and give extra advice if you need. those who loves to eat, chat, waste time and disturb others in classes definitely won't enjoy her class.
Extremely boring classes, but hey, the course is on dry material, and it is a mandatory class for first years. She posts all her powerpoints on virtual campus, so download those and don't bother going to class... she just reads straight off the slides anyways.
The only good thing about the class is that it is easy. The progress through course material is nearly non-existent because she always allows everyone to put forth their uninformed cricism of every detail of the content. Not only does everyone get to intergect, but she repeats the same answer over and over again, ensuring that nothing is learned.
Expectations full of loopholes, TA does all the work, can't go to her for help ("ask the TA first, then write me a letter explaining EXACTLY what is wrong"). Main problem with her is that she doesn't really know philosophy any more than if she had only read the course material. Also- loves having power over the students. Avoid this if you can.
She focuses too much on Descartes. The examples are not always helpful, especially when they're 2nd year math ones. Found some of the information went way over my head. For hard core philosophy junkies only.
At first she came across as a tyrant. Has very authoritative rules in the class. No talking at all. She kicked some people out for whispering to each other. If you go to class and pay attention to her example answers and memorize those. It is easy to get full marks on the exams. It's easy to get FAR ahead on readings in this class. Not bad.
I found she taught really well. She realy encourages discussions and helps get them going and keep them going. I found thereadings pretty tough but once you attend the lecture it becomes crystal clear. She is really nice and made the class one of my all time favorites.
Overall a good prof, I had no issues with her. Some people don't like her because she is strict about classroom conduct, but nothing unreasonable. She expects her students to be mature and act their age, so the people who don't act their age don't seem to like her. Read the textbook if you want to do well on the exams.
She is a great professor and an intelligent women. She explained universal theories to us (nothing to do with the course) in scientific terms, she could cite examples for anything, and could easily have a debate with anyone on anything. The sterotypical university professor I was trying to get ;)
Very strict about classroom rules, but it is conducive for learning. I find it a bit boring because it is a mandatory class, but she explains things well enough. Some people in the classroom make classes almost unbearable because they always have dumb comments. They are the reason that I don't like the class as much as I could.
She's super fun and has lolcatz and icanhascheezburger stuff to make class interesting.
why did i take this
clear on what she wanted from us. midterm average was 78% enough said. easy class but kinda boring but that's because i dont like philosphy. kinda strict but really not that bad just wants respect
Dr. Byrne is a great professor! Her expectations are clear, she explains the concepts very well and her use of Plato's Republic is fantastic and is not found in the lesson plans of other professors. If you want the best and easiest way to understanding philosophy take her course!!!
Great Prof! Slides are clear and uses great examples in class. Plus her lol cats are funny. Everyone thinks she's crazy b/c you get kicked out if you whisper but thats perfectly understandable since she wants to keep a class atmosphere. Take her class! Its an easy A!!!
Professor Byrne is amazing. Her one goal is to make sure that as many students as possible get through the course, and have a better understanding of critical thinking. If you don't do well it's your own fault :)
Definitely the most easy professor. Don't need to buy textbooks, I wasted lots of money buying books for her class, didn't open one and still got an A. She does post everything online but elaborates in class with cute examples. Take for an easy A.
terrible professor. her explanations and examples are incredibly annoying. although you really dont need even go to her classes because she reads right off the slides and puts them online
Really easy class. You hardly need to go to get a good grade. No need to buy the textbooks, all the information for the tests are on the slides. Study the practice questions because they're generally the exact same on the tests. If you get the choice, take her class you're guaranteed a good mark
Really great professor. Not the most interesting subject (Critical Thinkng), but she makes sure the class understands a concept before moving on. She gives the class a really good idea of what's on the tests. If you put in a little study time it's not hard to get perfect on a test.
A lot of the bad reviews are simply complaints about her examples but honestly, they made the class more interesting. The class expectations were incredibly clear and there is never any unexpected questions. Very fair, very nice. Redundant, but its a VERY easy mark.
excellent prof! Her expectations are very clear, and she provides example questions for tests and exams, which help A LOT. Her examples are awesome, even if you're not a "lol-cat" or star trek fan, it helps make the class interesting, and helps you remember material. She made me actually like philosophy..and I never thought that would happen!
AMAZING Prof! So clear and you can tell she wants students to succeed. Very good with providing memorable examples, and is much better than other profs teaching the same course!
Awesome teacher!
Byrne is such a good teacher! Always uses funny examples in class and really cares about her students.
Awesome prof! Prepares you very well for exams, it's an easy grade.
Amazing prof, she really goes out of her way to make sure you have the basics. Applies the breakdown of arguments to Platos Republic unlike other profs. Allows for really interesting debates even when mildly off topic. Genuinely wants you to pass.
shes a great teacher, lots of practice questions that are identical to the tests. However don't talk in her class it makes her very upset. Anybody from PHI1101D 2012 would know haha
Midterms and final were very easy if you study. She was a good lecturer
Super easy. She's a great an interesting lecturer and makes sure you understand everything.
Don't buy textbook. Just show up to lectures and she goes over everything several times. She essentially tells you what is on the mid term and exams and rewards students who attend classes with the questions. Warning though, the course itself is very dull, but excruciatingly simple.
As long as you attend class, you are guaranteed a good mark without the textbook. She gives you the questions and answers on her slides, so if you memorize them, you'll pass with flying colours. Most people don't take her too seriously though and she got mad at some students for talking in class. Respect her and she will respect you back.
Basically the beginning of every class she goes over the syllabus and repeats every lecture that class will end 10 minutes before the scheduled time. Felt like I was in kindergarten again. Class usually ends early which is nice. She is a super sweet woman, I would definitely recommend her for philosophy as she made it as simple as possible.
Great professor! Especially for first year, I did not attend many classes at the end, but if you attend the classes guaranteed "A" :)
She is a really great prof, she explains all the concepts clearly and uses a lot of practice questions to make everyone understands. If you attend classes and do the practice questions, then it's an easy A. You never need to open the textbook, as her slides explain everything. If you want/have to take PHI1101, then i recommend taking it with her :)
Didn't go to any classes, didn't buy any of the textbooks and got an A+. Her tests are basically replicas of her slides, just memorize the slides and you'll ace everything and get an email from the President of Philosophy asking you to switch majors.
AWESOME professor! Fun, friendly and great lecturer! Highly recommended to take PHI1101 with her as prof. Her slides are extremely helpful when it comes to studying. Final exam and tests were easier. Got my first A in university last year from that course with her as prof.
Barely ever went to class, didn't read the texts, and didn't study for the second midterm or exam and still came out with a B. She talked about her dead cat a lot but I talked to her once when I got sick and she seemed like a great person :)
Extremely unclear about expectations, and difficult to reach outside of class (very unhelpful); boring teacher. Successfully destroyed all interest I had in philosophy.
Trust me when I say that this is the easiest course of first year(and probably university) IF you take it with Laura Byrne. Very insightful professor, humorous, kind. and EASSSSYY! Slides=Your're set. *HIGHLIGHT OF THE CLASS* Lassie the dog comments and examples
Great prof! Very clear on what she expects from you. Do the practice questions and it's an easy A+ in her class. I got 100% on the second midterm. Loved the class overall.
I really enjoyed this class, mostly because I love philosophy. But she makes it even more interesting by allowing for class discussions, showing us videos etc. Doesn't rely too heavily on the textbook and her test questions are very fair. I found the marking to be a bit vague and picky, but it's not too hard to ace the class if you attend lectures.
Prof Byrne is a lovely woman and a great teacher. She not only explains the concepts very clearly but gives great examples and practice questions. She is truly passionate about philosophy which is a bonus! The material isn't the most exciting but her examples and old references make it more interesting.
Take notes, study your hardest, get ready to memorize
While her explanations in class leave me confused, the power points she posts on blackboard learn are extremely clear. In fact, you don't even need to go to class - is online. 2 midterms and a final exam. Memorization is key here! If you can and are willing to memorize, then you'll do well in this class. Don't buy the texts, don't need them.
This class was mandatory and philosophy is not my forte. However, Dr Byrne made this class just a little bit easier for me. Her explanations in class leave me confused at times but her powerpoints are so clear. Her "practice questions" are extremely helpful. She's a very respectful woman and i recommend her 100%
Take her class! It is much easier than the other sections for this course and you don't even need a book! (do not buy the republic its a waste). Its an easy A if you are alright with logic. Just make sure you do not talk during her class because she has a short temper. You can skip class sometimes (slide shows are pretty clear).
Class was pretty easy. Barely ever went to class and still managed to get A's on both midterms. Don't bother buying the textbook or The Republic (seriously, don't), the questions on the midterms are the same as the slides, I never opened my books once.
Don't even bother buying Critical Thinking, she uses the same definitions in her lectures. A very good prof for first years, somehow managed to get my interested in philosophy, which I thought was impossible. Her tests are nearly identical to the practice questions she gives in class, so it is easy to get a good grade, as long as you study them.
She's really clear on what she looks for on tests and provides almost exact questions study a bit everyday for a week and you'll get 100 no sweat. only 2 tests and the exam. She makes the class fun and I would definitely take her again
Best and easiest class I have taken. No textbook and buying the republic is a waste. Her slides are amazing, clear and she provides so many examples!! VERY clear expectations! All exams were REALLY easy and she gave you some of the questions beforehand! Minimal effort required really, barley went to class and passed with an A. Would take again!
Had her in 2009, great prof very easy, tells u what's on test, no need to readbuy Plato's republic, overall boring,
If you have to take this course, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE IT WITH DR. BYRNE! If you follow her directions and do study the material, the course is a cakewalk! She's also very helpful if you ever require help!
I cant even begin to describe this professor, she is so clear and interactive with the students. And for those of you reading this being like" i don't know, rate my prof is sketchy" BELIEVE THIS she is there for you every step of the way, dont have to buy the textbook because everything is in her slides. NO surprises on exams . JUST WHY NOT?
She is the best Philosophy professor at the University. Given that she was teaching this mandatory 1st year, she conveyed material in simple terms and laid out exactly what we needed to know for exams. There were no surprises on exams, she told us specifically what we needed to know. Her slides were great, as well! Take PHI1101 with Prof. Byrne!
Shes very nice. Dont need to buy any book, she tells you what will be on the exam. I remember she talked alot about her cat? and Lassie. I got an A in her class, everyone can do it.
Great Prof! Slides are perfect, and she tells you exactly what is going to be on the exams! She is a very funny and nice lady too. Highly recommend
She was sweet, and made it a super easy class. Just don't try to pack up early. Going to class is helpful, but the textbook isn't necessary.
She managed to make a subject I hate interesting. Both midterms and the final were easy. Don't bother buying the textbook.
Very clear, and makes complex ideas easy to comprehend. She tells you exactly what to expect on the exammidterms. She is always willing to help anyone who asks.
Incredibly easy to follow, it would be very hard to not do well in her classes. Great professor and you come out of the course having learned a lot.
GOOD!
Lecture are unnecessary to attend, she basically repeats whats on the slides. her tests are straight forward and easy, if you do the example questions she gives you'll be fine. she hates people talking in her class, but does'nt seem to care when you use your phone
Very easy going and generally a very nice prof. Don't talk during her class and you should be fine. Not very necessary to go to class since she just restates what's on her slides, and her practice questions are crucial to follow in order to expect what are on her tests and exams. Easy tests, not so easy exam. Great prof!
If you want an easy class, take this course. The lectures are a little dry because Laura is so ridiculously clear and gives so many examples. She gives you all the answers, just as long as you study the answers for the tests and final, you'll get great grades.
Amazingly nice professor who legitimately cares about her students. Tries to make lectures interesting and enjoyable, and doesn't make the tests too hard. Uploads all the powerpoints and study questions on Blackboard.
She is wonderful! Her class can be boring at times but she uses LOTS of examples to support the material. Easy class if you go, posts lectures on BB. GOOD CLASS.
Professor Byrne is such a nice lady who HATES noises and chatting. Her classes, frankly, are boring, but she goes through the material several times and in an easy way. She made philosophy easy; all you have to do is study the practice questions she posts and you're all good to go! Don't buy the book, it's a waste of money. Defo recommend her.
She broke everything down so it was really easy to follow and as long as you pay attention and go through the practice questions, you should have no trouble at all.
Absolutely amazing prof for this class. Very clear expectations and as long as you show up, you'll be good.
Prof. Byrne is an amazing teacher. She gives great explanations and makes the content extremely easy to understand. She gives numerous practice questions (which are almost identical to the ones on the tests and exam) and is super helpful. Study the basics, do the practice questions and you're almost guaranteed a fantastic mark.
She puts all of her PowerPoints online. Don't buy the textbook, she goes over all of the key concepts in class and explains all of the readings from Plato.
She's super kind! She has memes and in her presentation and she makes sure to give so many practice questions that you dont need to study if you print powerpoints. Dont by the textbook just the republic.
Byrne is an absolutely gifted professor. Her slides were comprehensive of the subject and she was very clear. It was incredibly easy to pass the final because of her teaching. However, when I went to talk to her during her office hours, she assumed that I "hadn't been paying attention" when I was just asking questions. I didn't appreciate it.
She's like your uOttawa mom
She is a good professor and her slides and presentations are incredibly clear and helpful. She is often quite rude to select students and will stop a class to complain about how no one answers questions to ''look cool''
clear grading criteria, so you'll know exactly what to do to study
everything is clearly posted on blackboard, simple and easy
Class is extremely easy as Professor Byrne posts questions which appear in the exams on blackboard with the asnwers. Her content is very clear and it's super easy to get an A if you study. She's a little sensitive when it comes to phones/laptops etc. and can get mad but other than that she's nice. OH ya and don't buy textbook.
I loved Professor Byrne! As a first year student, she made it super easy for me to understand the content and provides tons of practice questions that are exactly like the questions on the test. Not the most entertaining lectures you'll ever attend but it's easy to do well.
Super personable and a great teacher. Made a course that could be difficult really simple to understand. Show up to class, listen and you're set.
Prof Byrne is such a kind person. She explains subjects in a way that is clear and easy to understand even if you are a science major. She is clearly passionate about philosophy, which is so refreshing. Her expectations for exams are CRYSTAL CLEAR, as in the only way you won't get an A+ is if you don't want to. Highly recommend her for any class.
Okay, she is really good: easy to follow, clear grading, fair marker. BUT, if blatant memorization isn't your thing, skip this class. The republic part of her tests are just 100% memorization and regurgitation. I am not kidding. You need to memorize word for word.
Such a sweet lady, she makes me think of someone's mom. She makes this class so straightforward & gives tons of examples and practice questions. Do the practice questions she provides, and you'll be golden for the tests and final. Absolutely recommend her, a class that could be difficult to understand is an easy A with her awesome teaching!
Dont understand why this is a mandatory Telfer credit, but its pretty easy, just tests your memorization skills. She gives specific examples for tests and final. Don't really need to go to class or buy the textbook in my opinion. Got 80's on both the midterms having skipped at least one lecture a week all semester, and never opened either textbook.
Professor Byrne is a very organized and polite professor. She posts everything online and gives practice questions and answers for the exams. As long as you attendant her lectures and make an effort to do the practice questions, you will do well in her class.
Go to lectures and you'll be fine, I only did the reading for the first week and still aced the class. Just be prepared to memorize her practice questions.
Prof Byrne's Reasoning and Critical Thinking course was very straightforward. She makes the content so easy to understand that you get sick of it by the end of the semester. She's very kind and approachable. All her content and practice tests are posted on Blackboard, but do attend class because her explanations are helpful. Lots of memorization...
You really need be willing to memorize to do well in her class. She makes the concepts super duper easy to understand but she is highly specific on how she wants you to answer her questions. There's almost a formula of sorts. Republic part of her tests is harder because you have to memorize like paragraphs almost word for word.
Good at explaining material. Interesting class. A little unorganized. Readings are hard but professor explains them in class. Have to know material in detail for tests.
Pretty good teacher, super cute and passionate about the material. Uses power points a lot and uploads them but elaborates on them in class (loves to use cute and funny examples). The reading material is pretty touch but she explains the EXACT answer she wants you to use on tests for them. Must know other material in detail tough.
Don't buy the textbook, it's expensive and you only have to go to class to do well. That said, you must go to class or you will fail. She is clear with her expectations and she weights tests so that your highest mark counts for more, but during the two mid-terms I struggled to put everything down I wanted in the time allotted. She's very nice too.
You literally only have to study the slides to get an A+. Yes, she's that easy. AND DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. You also don't have to go to lectures, since everything is based on the slides. I did poor in her class because I always studied last minute.
her tests are soooo easy if you study the slides. I didn't buy the textbooks and passed easily. Great class for an easy a
Professor Byrne is hands down the best philosophy professor at Uottawa. She takes the effort to simplify a rather complex subject. Clear marking criteria for exam and midterm. Show up to class, listen to her lectures, and reflect the theory on the assigned readings, and that's an easy A. Definitely recommend her !.
She's boring to listen to but it's easy content.
She's boring to listen to but it's easy content. I find her to specific for such a general topic.
Lectures are a bit slow and boring, but the class is an easy A if you put effort into it. The tests were a lot of memorization. She gave practice questions and the answers, and expected us to write the answer almost word for word, but once you did that it's a breeze. The class incorporates Plato's Republic, which I found interesting. Decent class
Easiest class at UofO. She made things SO simple and easy to understand. The course gave me highschool vibes, its literally baby steps. Didn't buy or use the textbook, and went to like 3 classes all semester. All you need to do is study/memorize her lecture slides thoroughly (very straightforward), and do her practice questions to get an A+. EASY A
She's very professional and amazing lectures, you can learn a lot just by reading the textbook but the lectures are super helpful so its worth it to actually show up to class.
Amazing Professor. Explains complicated stuff really easily. Clear grading criteria, just memorize her model answers and an A+ is guaranteed. Everything comes from her slides. DO NOT by the books you won't use them. I bought them and didn't even touch them. Don't skip class, go and understand. I greatly recommend her.
The material covered in the course is not difficult, but there is a lot of content. Her power points are posted online and generally range from 30 to 100 slides. Personally I found the layout of some of her powerpoint to be somewhat confusing and took away from my learning. In addition, if you take this course, PHI1101, be prepared to memorize.
Very nice lady and clearly passionate about philosophy. I was afraid to take philosophy coming from a primarily science background but she made the concepts very easy to understand and apply. Didn't bother reading the textbook because she explains concepts in depth and gives practice questions. Her expectations on exams are clear.
Laura Byrne class requires memorization. But that's what made the class and easy class because you knew exactly what she wanted from her lectures. Go to class memorize the mock answers and you're set.
Professor Byrne's class was ridiculously easy! She repeats things to make sure you understand and she gives you EXACTLY what to write on the tests to get full marks. Literally EXACTLY, not kidding.
She tells you EXACTLY what she wants to see, exactly the way that she wants to see it. If anybody gets less than a B-, you really didn't care. She laid out exactly what you need and recounts the entire textbooks (DON'T BUY THEM. WASTE OF MONEY). She is very clear, asks questions to the class and answers them. No prior knowledge of PHI needed.
She is very good at her job. I had her for 1101 as well. The only thing, for this class, it is a lot of memorization, associating and writing. (Basically three essays per test and there are two tests. Plus the exam). It's a lot of writing but just work hard at it, you don't need the textbook, just pay attention in class, go as often as possible
3 exams, no papers. exams worked from the slides on the power points. basically gave you the questions on the exam. super duper easy, and pretty interesting class tbh.
The easiest prof and class by far. No papers, only 2 exams and a final in which she describes EXACTLY the material that you need to know (and that you can easily memorise). There are never any surprises on the exams because it all comes straight from the lectures, so don't bother buying the textbook (she goes over everything in class anyway).
Laura Is a great teacher makes sure you understand the material, and clearly lays out what you will be tested on even giving you some of the question before hand. As long as you are respectful in class she will be very respectful to you.
Amazing prof! I had to drop the course due to personal reasons although she is a very understanding professor and truly does care for students. If you've never taken philosophy before this WILL be a tricky course.
She's very clear by what she is going to put in the tests, even gives the exact questions and answers. I would definitely take one of her classes again as it is an easy pass.
Professor Byrne posts all her slides on Brightspace and only presents what's on them so I found there was really no need to go to class. She is very thorough, sometimes painfully so but its easy to understand concepts that she teaches. Shes clear on expectations for exams so study as she instructs and you will ace it no problem.
Very nice prof. Her expectations are clear and she gives you questions that will appear on the test. Uses memes in her lectures which are cheesy but I appreciate her efforts to make the class more engaging. Would take again.
Provides easy-to-understand slides online so that attendance isn't necessary, and the material is presented in a very clear and straight-forward manner. She provides the students with various practice questions online- some of which are actually on the tests and final exam so that you can prepare your answers before you write them.
She is an amazing teacher, she tells you exactly what to study for and gives you many practice questions with the right answer format. She makes her lectures interesting. If you miss class, don't worry every single thing is on the slides. Hard not to have an A in her class.
Best prof for philosophy at uOttawa! She tells you exactly what to study for and the proper format. I regret buying the textbook for this class cause it was completely useless, her slides are more than enough!
Prepares students for tests and exams extraordinarily well. Uses a variety of visual and auditory prompts during the lecture. Very clear and understandable. The tests and exams have a number of question styles and though difficult, they are never surprising.
Nice Prof. involves the class. Read the material before class, powerpoints are helpful. Midterm & final are similar to what's been discussed in class. Attend the lectures.
Love this prof so much. I was really nervous to take this class because I've never taken philosophy in my life, but she made her lectures funny, engaging and easy to understand!! Just do the readings and know how to take notes properly and you'll be fine. Also very understanding if you're late and have a really good reason. Overall amazing prof!!!!
Dr. Byrne is such a good professor, I have never taken philosophy before and was a little nervous. She makes it very interesting and she's really cute and quirky. She makes the class engaging and interesting with her wit and use of funny examples. Would absolutely recommend!!!
Take her! Out of all the other PHI profs I have had, Laura Byrne by far is the best. she really wants her students to do well and gives us all the necessary information to do well on her tests. Her practice questions/answer powerpoints outline exactly how she wants you to word the answer. Seriously word for word. Awesome Prof
Took her reasonings and critical thinking class. She really wants students to succeed and if you do her review questions, you will. Even in a giant lecture hall she manages to engage all of her students regardless of whether or not the content is dry that day. 10/10 love her
Dr. Byrne is a phenomenal professor. While her lectures can be quite dry, her positive attitude and sweet personality liven them. She puts all her powerpoint and multiple test question examples of BrightSpace to ensure her students succeed, she also responds to emails quickly and is always available during her office hours. Awesome prof.
TAKE IF YOU CAN. I have never done 1 minute of philosophy prior to taking her course (it was mandatory). A+ on both midterms, waiting on exam mark. Didnt go to class, her slides are SO detailed you dont need textbook. She gives ALL her midterm/exam questions as "practice questions" and answers them for you with how she wants each question answered!
Professor Byrne is the BEST philosophy prof you could get. She tells you the bigger questions that will be on the exams, study those. She tells you exactly what she expects from you for every evaluation. Her mid-term and final was very easy. The textbook is useless, did not open it once. The subject is boring, but she made it so fun.
A really good prof! Her midterms and final are based on her slides. Buying the textbooks are not necessary since she puts everything you need to know on her slides, and you can just study from her slides. I would take her class again because as long as you pay attention to the notes she gives you, it's hard to fail this course.
100% sweetheart. She sets out exactly what she expects for test answers with the exact way she wants them answered. No surprises on her test and she is incredibly sweet and absolutely delightful. Makes the class enjoyable even if you don't enjoy the content.
Dr. Byrne is a super sweet professor. She is great in preparing her students for the midterms and finals. I hated philosophy but she did make it bearable. Didn't read the textbook or the book. Accessible outside of the class and always gives extra office hours. 1 thing I didn't like was how disorganized Brightspace was.
All the exams are very fair and Prof Byrne always explains what the criteria and main points are on the exam. The lectures aren't very exciting but she tries to make funny examples and always answers questions very well. I recommend Prof Byrne's class without a doubt.
Best prof I've ever had. She gives you practice questions before every midterm/exam and they pretty much exactly mirror what you'll see on the test. She's a super nice woman and can make dull subjects enjoyable to study.
Professor Byrne is a very caring and sweet lady. She wants to see her students do well and she tells you exactly what will be on the midterms, which helps a lot. Having said that, her lectures can be very dry as she simply reads word for word of her slides. Shes also canceled class 2 or 3 times thus far, which is unacceptable.
One of her best perks is that he is really clear about how she is grading you and exactly on what. I personally don't enjoy the study of philosophy but she made it bearable. I would recommend taking her for the course if you need to. She is nice and makes sure your thoughts are clear before you head into an exam or anything
Great prof, only 2 midterms and they were very easy if you pay attention in class and do the reading. Always answers questions the best she can has a lot of office time to accommodate and the material wasn't that hard. You should read the Plato book, the other is kinda useless so you don't need it and practice the exams she gives in her slides.
Prof Byrne is an amazing example of a teacher who cares about her students. She's also super funny and uses pop culture and memes in her lectures. There are 2 books and only the republic is technically necessary to read, the other one is basically the class material that she will teach. No assignments, 2 tests and a final exam. One of my fav profs.
A very great prof. She gives many resources to help you understand the material. She is very caring and wants to make sure that the students do well. She is very thorough and prepares you very well for the tests.
Prof Byrne cares about her students. She always starts her class by stating exactly what you need to do based on the syllabus. The critical thinking book is not needed as she does a great job explaining it whereas, the republic is needed for tests/quizzes. You must go to class to pass but she tries to make it enjoyable.
FALL TERM 2020. AMAZING PROF USES EASY EXAMPLES TO UNDERSTAND. OPEN BOOK TEST (ONLY HAD 2 TEST) GAVE A WIDE TIME FOR TEST (20 HOURS TO HAND IT IN)
Go to the lectures and you will do fine. Her lectures are very engaging as well. If you are thinking about taking her class, do it.
She's pretty awesome and manages to make boring content at the very least palatable. She uses pop culture references and modern examples to engage with her students and always managed to deconstruct even the most complicated of things to a point where I could understand it. AMAZING! Though I would have liked a bit less weight put to the tests...
The class itself is boring and she goes so slow. Also, the questions on tests are either clear as day or they don't make any sense in the slightest. Honestly, as long as you take notes from the ppt, you don't need to attend the class (online)
Absolute gem of a professor! Hilarious and clear about her expectations. Will literally write out the exact format of test questions and answers. Impossible to not understand the course content with Laura Byrne.
Prof Byrne is a nice person but I didn't like her as a professor. She goes so slow during lectures it's hard to keep focused and she has a bit of a condescending tone. We're only marked on three tests including the final which puts so much pressure on students
If you want an easy high mark take this prof, no cap! Very caring, funny professor, low amounts of work other than reading! Would definitely recommend!
Really great prof, cares about her students and always asked for feedback so she can improve. She did a good job with delivering an online course during the pandemic, moved at a reasonable pace. She gave a 12 hour window to complete tests and 24 hours for the exam, recorded lectures and posted the powerpoint before a unit was started.
This class is super easy because all the questions in the exams are straight out of the notes she gives. All her exams were take-homes. You don't have to make your own notes because her notes are already super detailed. Overall, this class is a great average boost!
Prof. Byrne's lectures go by slowly, but she takes the time to answer all questions and explain things clearly. She is very calm and sweet and she adds jokes and memes into her lectures to be a bit more interesting. Her tests are open book, so take clear notes and you will pass easily. Pay attention!
Impossible not to get a good grade as she gives you test exams in the exact same structure and shows you ideal answers. Can make you slack though. She is really sweet, but sometimes too sweet for her own good. A solid option if philosophy is mandatory, I just don't enjoy it!
prof. byrne was the best prof I've ever had. She cares so much about her students and does literally everything possible to help us get a good grade. Her lectures are dynamic and interesting, and she explains things in many different ways. Her test "practice questions" are literally exactly what's on the test. Take her class if you want an easy A
Professor Byrne was very caring towards her students and her instructions are clear. There were 2 midterms and a final for this class, but was doable as long as you took notes throughout the course. She always finds ways to make the lecture engaging by putting a cute picture or joke in the slideshows. I would take this class again, she is great!
Such a cute professor who truly cares for you and has the best intentions. All of her lectures and slideshows have test questions from previous years which are always repeated but reworded. So as long as you follow her answer format, you'll get 100%.
Found Prof very boring, does not make sense and goes off topic. The TA I had literally made fun of my answers, so I reported them, in return they failed my next test. Course was supposed be about the history of philosophers, we only learned about three white male philosophers, and tested us on our opinions that were then marked wrong.
This class was a horrible choice for a first year philosophy course. The prof chose an unattainable & expensive textbook, when all of the required readings from it could be found for free online. She also took criticism from students as direct attacks and did nothing about the TAs who didn't mark fairly. Don't take this class, find a better option.
While Byrne is a good teacher of content and I did enjoy her lectures, everything else about this course was awful. The textbook was obscure and totally unnecessary. She often took negative feedback as personal criticism. Exam questions were too vague and the grading was all over the place. Save yourself the stress, don't take this class!
Do not talk in her class... She knows her stuff though
Really nice and understanding. Online tests were all open book and 24 hours. Lecture's are helpful if you need clarification about the topics but you can pass by just copying the posted notes on your own time. Overall easy prof who wants you to succeed
she has an obsession with dogs its in all her lectures kinda funny tho she really wants students to succeed which is nice. tests are so easy!! nice lady as well
Clear on what she wants. Used examples from the textbooks almost word for word so don't buy them. Attendance isn't mandatory but all of the content on the tests is in her lectures so definitely watch them at some point. Goes over everything very well but talks very slow so use the 2x speed option. Funny and nice, hoping to have her again.
She is super caring and clearly cares about the success of her students. The lectures can be a bit drawn out, but the tests and exams directly reflect the material given. She gives lots of practice and clearly states the grading structures of test questions. Easy credit!
Laura Byrne is probably the nicest professor I've met so far. Her lectures are amazing, she provides amazing practice and her tests and exams mimic exactly what you learned in class. To be honest, you could probably do only the practice questions not attend lectures and still ace the class. Everything is an open book and you have 24 for tests.
one of the sweetest professors i've had so far! her class is fairly easy, all of her online exams were open book and 24 hours, plus most questions on the exam are taken directly from the slides and what she says during lectures. very easy credit if PHI is a required course :)
Prof Byrne is an amazing professor and gives great lectures. The class was taught virtually and synchronously but slides were posted so you could still catch up if you missed class. There were 2 tests and the final. Everything was open book and you had 24hrs to complete. If you take good notes you'll find this class pretty easy.
Great Professor overall! I would take her course again. Tests/exams are straightforward, she makes the expectations very clear. Accessible to ask for help. Lectures are funny and informative (sometimes slow but worth it). Very easy to do well as long as you focus and think critically/logically through the material.
She is super chill. There arent many graded assignments, 2 tests, a midterm and a final exam which are a bit long. She doesnt give homework other than some reading from the textbook, but she speaks about what we read in the lectures. Her TA's are easy graders, would recommend taking her online.
Shes fun if you focus in class and stay on track
I took this course as an elective and Im so very happy I did. I have to say it was a joy going to Dr. Byrne's lectures. She's such a sweet lady and I love how she taught the course. Learned a lot and was exposed to very interesting perspectives.
She makes her lectures more confusing than they need to be and then denies that it's confusing, doesn't answer emails or questions in class, always goes overtime in class, and is honestly pretty mean to students. I would avoid taking her course if I could.
People either love her or hate her. I personally loved her and how fair she was in exams. Her final was long, but it was the easiest final I have given in my 2 years uni life. She copies examples from slides in exam. She explains the material fairly well. She adds memes in her slide too! Kinda unhelpful though and does not always reply to emails.
There are many mixed reviews on her but I wouldn't take her, quite rude to her students and her penalties are awful and will alter your grade by at least 20%. She tries to make her course extremely structured but it ends up overcomplicating it.
No philosophy papers. 2 T/F, fill in the blanks, matching and short answer midterms. The final was the same style. They were all open book and 24 hour take home assignments. She wanted us to read philosophical work but you could pass the course without ever having to read the books. The easiest philosophy course I have ever taken.
Professor was overall decently nice, although she could be somewhat condescending at times. Explains material well and is overall a good professor. Makes good use of class material in exams. The course is ridiculously easy, however.
Really easy course but the teacher is kind of rude. It become difficult to attend class from second hand embarrassment of all the cheesy memes, Lassie obsession, and chastising of students. The actual course content is really easy. Not necessary to read the book.
She's strict, rude, and not accessible outside of class. I would not take her class again, though some might like her as her test are open for 24 hours.
Great prof!
The class is very easy if you just attend class and take notes. The midterms and exams were all open-book and take home so there's no real need to study as long as you understand the material. The lectures can get rambly and I wish she addressed unsupported comments by classmates more. Other than that she's good.
Prof Byrne is one of the best professors I have come across. Her lectures were clear and she made all concepts very accessible, and the same goes for tests. Textbooks are not necessary. Such a wholesome and sweet person. She used memes to break down the material and make it more straightforward. Prof Byrne - you're not cringe, you're the best!
It was the best class I have ever taken at university. VERY easy. Midterms were open book 24hr time window with MCQ, fill in the blanks etc. No essays at all. I love Dr. Byrne!!!!
