One of my favorite teachers, really smart lady. About 3-4 papers with one final group project and no exam(woohoo). Class work is light not including the papers but plently of time given and lots of drafts. Take her believe me.

Casal is GREAT! Her class really makes you want to be a better writer. You get a real sense of community and acceptance in her class...it doesn't every feel like school or that you're being made to do something.

I haven't taken her creative writing course, but her English class is great! I say this even though I'm having trouble passing. I may not be very good with the last two assignments, but my "real" writing has never been better! She's fun and serious at once, and I've really enjoyed the class. ^_^

Prof casal is very outgoing, energetic, and interesting. however, she has an extreme liberal bias, so beware her classes if you're a conservative and tend to apeak your mind. she also tends to dismiss ideas that don't match with what she has in mind when she discusses a particular work.

She is a great introductive teacher to english. She keeps you listening with her stories and humor. Just like any other english class in college, just pay attention to the essay criteria and notes. Essays are all you will do. Overall she is a good teacher.

Great teacher but...If you get something wrong she kind of attacks you and makes fun of you. She embarasses random people..like asking them y they are looking at the clock and if they want to leave...leave...other than that she is an easy grader and not alot of tests.

I took Casal for most of my english courses at nova. She is very good at what she does...Sassy and tells great stories. However, if you take things to heart dont take her class. She tends to play favorites with students and makes it very clear who those students are. She tends to shoot down ideas/answers from those who are not in her fave. list.

She's straight to the point with everything and doesn't give you a whole bunch of stupid work that isnt really neccessary like my first teacher. She's ALWAYS willing to help and is really fair. She makes her class not boring because she's funny and gets off topic every now and again.

Have taken three classes with her, A+ in all of them. Maybe I'm one of the "pets" mentioned, but she always struck me as very fair. Creative Writing was very encouraging- also, this raging conservative had her views respected, so the liberal bias isn't bad if you're articulate. Would suggest strong prior interest in the subject though.

Dr. Casal is the best. I'm the worst at English papers and I ended up with a B in her class. She does all she can to help you and is very lenient with her assignments. She isn't one of those teachers that picks topics for you and gives you no other choices. Really funny too, knows how to keep the class interesting!

I thought I wrote really crappy papers but ended up with A's on them. had her 3:30-6:10 ..she let us out an hour 1/2 early. Sometimes we just have to show up to turn stuff in then leave. Professor has a great personality, however, if you have been out of school for a while, you will have to rely on your team mates and hope they will help you. Teacher doesn't always come to class. Therefore, you are responsible for teaching yourself. Class is easy if you are an excellent writer.

i love this professor, she made the class laugh a lot. she loves to talk, but helps pass the time. i think she gives fair amount of work quizzes and class work pretty easy. mostly graded by group projects and short readings from text to remember what u read. but they are not hard. she's free spirit and does not take of points for interpretation.

A very fun teacher to have. She will assign lots of papers and about 3 group projects so be prepared. She's willing to help you if you need it and she makes herself avaiable for student conferences. I personally dislike writing with a passion so I found this class very difficult but if you enjoy writing you'll enjoy her class.

If you want to learn, and be capable to write with your own thoughts, this is the teacher for you. She is very helpful. She prepares you not just for her class, but for life. I learned a lot in a easy way. I got A on every assessment. But if you don't like to go to the class/wants a teacher that you do whatever you want, this is not for you.

Professor Casal is funny and makes the class enjoyable. However, it's not an easy class, you have to work hard to get a good grade. Be sure to read every poem she assigns you. She picks her favorites in the class which I don't like. She expects everyone to know about critical analysis, even if you have never had a literature class before.

She is very feisty but in a good way. Just come to class prepared and she will love you. Papers were easy so she didn't really need to ive much advise/feedback on them. You have all semester to revise all your papers and turn them in as many times as you want until you are happy with your grade.

Prof. Casal expects every student to be an expert when it comes to analyzing poems. Essays were hard and the group projects just added a ton of stress. I bs'd my way through this class and surprisingly got a B. If you enrolled in her class for the next semester, may god have mercy on your soul. This class was TOUGH.

There was often very lively class discussions where people (me) didn't agree with her point of view. Disagreeing with her did not affect your grade, as others have stated. Professor Casal is entertaining and makes the stories you read come to life. Even if you're not an English major, you'll enjoy the short stories and poetry she assigns. There was no midterm or final, though there was a group project instead of the final. She does do prompts for the readings and has student groups in the class writegrade them. :)

Nice professor and all, but If you are going to take her for 302, know that you will do 3 Textual Analysis Papers, 2 Discipline Awareness Projects, Interview Paper, Analysis Paper, Reflective Paper,Impromptu paper, Annotated Bibliogr, 2 Memos, 2 Business letter, 2 Emails, 1 Resume, and 1 cover letter. Very high load, lots of assignments to do.

I really enjoyed Dr Casal's class last semester; she tells interesting stories and class isn't boring. We had to form a group towards the start and stick to it throughout the semester, so make sure you pick good group members! Dr. Casal is amazing. I took Eng 111 and there were 3-4 papers. She works the page limit up so its not as overwhelming having to write 6-8 page paper at the end of the semester. SHE HATES PHONES. I took Dr. Casal for ENG 111 & ENG 125 and she never let me down. She gave interesting and short lectures. She did use the text book and had us write the bare minimum paper assignments (3 a semester). She lets students work in groups for peer reviews on their papers, she also has the group complete a final project instead of a test. Take her!!!!!!

With Dr. Casal you either love her or you hate her. I loved her though. She can be very inspirational and funny if you show up to class and do the work. Her grading system is tough but she is a pretty easy grader. There is a lot of group work so make sure you get a good group. She is a great professor though.

Great professor!!! Would def take again?English and writing was never my thing but I'm so glad I took this class. You have to read a lot but she lets you use your notes on the quizzes. There are 2 papers you have to write on poems that you choose and a group project instead of a final.

Prof. Laura Casal is a great English Professor. She is a poet. There were 2 argument essays, 1 group debate, visual argument essay and the final project in this class. She is pretty linear but you need to attend class regularly and listen to her. She also provided some extra credits. Great Professor with hilarious lectures!!!

I took her ENG125 course and I thought she was hilarious. I would take her course again. Her class wasnt even that hard either.

You will be working in a group during the entire semester, so if you don't like that, do NOT take this class. Other than that, the class was as simple as doing the readings and saying something about them in class. We wrote 2 papers worth 50% of our grades, but if you work with her your almost guaranteed an A. She does not tolerate excuses!!!

She is very nice teacher, she helps you with your problem. There are two papers that are due at the end but she gives you the time to do. She also looks at your paper a week before they are due because she takes her time to make corrections to help you get a better grade in class.

I was incredibly lucky to have Dr Casal as my first professor in my college career. She is an amazing author, poet, and woman. You will not regret taking any class of hers. For the past two semesters, I have purposefully sought out classes taught by her. Dr Casal is an amazing professor, but an even better person.

If I could give a higher rating for Dr. Casal I would! I was excited to go to this class every week because every time I left I felt refreshed, confident, and inspired. She is quirky and funny and gives great advice. You will have a great time participating. The only downside is her instructions get jumbled because she isnt very orgnaized.

I've taken ENG 111 and 112 with Dr. Casal and loved both classes. She really cares about her students and wants them to do well. She is great about talking with you if you feel stuck or need a little extra help with something. BUT be aware she puts you in groups for the whole semester! It's not hard though, just participate! An actual no-bias review: As a student who does not study at all and is pretty lazy but still tries, I thought this class was perfect. The only real work is writing essays, which you have around a month to do for each. Unless you are a moron and can't write a decent essay, this will be a very easy class. Class never goes full length. Can skip.

I passed with an A+ but I did have many issues with this class. She does not encourage questions, and even threatened to lower our grades if we did. Though the work is relatively easy, I know friends who struggled because of their part-time jobs. So keep that in mind. Besides that, she revised well and we had about 3 essays, and 3-4 short papers.

The only work is the essays which she gives you a lot of time to do. She also helps you revise it so you can turn it in again for an improved grade. She just does not like when students ask questions and will always tell them to refer to the syllabus so make sure you pay attention. Other then that, it is an easy class.

She is hard with the essays, but she is one of the best professor of English at NOVA.

Dr. Casal is the best English teacher I've ever had. She gives you great feedback on your essays. She doesn't have a lot of assignments. We only had to write 3 essays in the whole semester. There is no final and instead you have to write a self-evaluation letter in the end. She also accepts late assignments and often gives you an A.

Loved her. She is amazing and really cares about her students. Only 6 week classes, but it wasn't that bad. Cameras needs to be on for virtual. Participation is mandatory. Short story analysis each week, and essay and a project for final. Easy but lots of work. Her class is fun.

Dr Casal is an involved professor who runs her classroom based on respect and communication. In her English 112 all grades are improvement based according to the quality of your initial draft. Dr Casal is very passionate and sometimes will go off on tangents while lecturing. A relaxing and friendly course that still teaches English fundementals.

Dr Casal is a very nice person, and her class is pretty straightforward. 2 papers worth about 50% of your grade and small assignments (one or two paragraphs) for the other 50%. She posts examples for every assignment, follow the example and you will receive an A. I spent less than 3 hours a week on this class. Your grade reflects your effort.

Very nice and lectures were always interesting and engaging! 2 papers, both had lots of time to work on and opportunities to improve them based on the prof's advice. There were a handful of HW throughout the course that were not very hard. She gave opportunities for students to improve when needed. Her "A" does start at a 93, so keep that in mind!

Prof Casal is tough but effective. Her feedback at each point for the papers in this class was excellent and genuinely helpful. I'm not much of a poetry person, but I enjoyed the poems that were used in this course. She's an excellent professor and will push you to be a better writer.

(ENG 246): She is a very nice teacher. I took her for American literature, and when I tell you I suck at literature, I mean it. But her work is not that difficult. Homework was just writing a paragraph response to one short story or poem out of the many that you are required to read from the textbook. Only one essay. The final was a diary entry.

Homework was just writing a paragraph response to one short story or poem out of the many that you are required to read from the textbook. Only one essay. The final was a diary entry.

Professor Casal teaches in way where simplicity is bold. Her lectures are amazing, it always feels like a family gathering, the way she shares stories, and really makes connections with her students. Highly recommend, I had a great experience in this class!

Just a wonderful professor in all regards, she has a brilliant sense of humor and always has nice lighthearted classes. She gives you plenty of opportunities to mend your mistakes through extra credit assignments along with peer reviews and teacher reviews which for all practical reasons are ungraded.

She is very passionate, well versed, and caring. She will give you helpful and honest feedback on your writing, to make you better! Beware that an "A" starts at a 93, not the typical 90, so strive for excellence. This professor was amazing and so sweet. Assignments are straight forward, easy and engaging. No tests! Only essay (test) grades.

Follow her instructions and you will be rewarded with phenomenal feedback on essays and projects, she cares about her students and wants to see them succeed but don't mistake that for leniency for late submissions or absence.
