very good teacher. The only french prof I have had so far at csulb who was capable and cared. she is tuff so only enroll if you are at 201 level or prepared to study your ass off because other wise you'll fail like i did. her quizes were hard but the final was not so bad. She tried to make the class fun and is willing to help those who try.
She is one of the most awesome instructors on the campus. She is well read and deserves her title of Professor/Dr. as she is extremely insightful in the study of Cinema. Be attentive to the readings, lectures and films and you will do great. If you are a film major this is a must have class to take, because she is a true critic of film. This women
The class is managable, but you can fall behind very fast. Her quizes are more like tests, so beware. She is very fun, and talks about French culture, which is very interesting. She helps you if you ask. The class itself is fun, just study for exams.
She's really great and knows what she's talking about. You have to go to class and it's a lot of work. The only bad thing is that she likes to spit hairs when grading tests and papers. Very picky/ precise, but i guess that's what an ex- M.I.T. prof does. She expects alot out of the class too.
She was an awesome Professor, always helpful. It's not an easy class but you will learn a lot. Do your work and attend all classes and there shouldn't be a problem.
She is an amazing an interesting teacher. The class is not easy though. Keep up with your worek or else you can fall behind. Get the book and don't miss class!
easiest class i have ever taken in my life. i showed up probably about half the time, turned in about half the homework and got an A. if this is your first french class out of 4 years of high school french i'd recommend a higher class. it seemed more like french 2 to me.
WOW, she is super HOT--good looking!!! She deserves like 10 of those Chili Peppers. She is extremely intelligent and deserves to be the Department Chair for French and for the RGRLL the umbrella department for Foreign Languages. She is funny and makes the class very interesting!!! You will learn someting in her class so be prepared...au revoir.
A commanding & versatile lecturer. Executes an incisive survey of the subject. Vast knowledge concerning history & all sorts of films, among other things as well. You'll learn the fundamentals & be exposed to canonical films as well as ones that are more under the radar. A new appreciation for French cinema will develop if you take her.
I loved having her as a teacher, i took both 201A and 201B with her, because i have had bad french teachers in the past, it was somewhat hard for me, but she gives you many practice sheets and study aid's. It's probably easy to get an a but because I've had a rocky foundation i received b's in both classes which i was very happy about. Another grea
Best french teacher ever. I wish she would teach all my french classes. She's very smart. She knows what she's going, and she isn't a native speaker, which makes it easier on us, because she understands what method of teaching will work for us new learners. Class attendance, while not required, you'll learn a lot by going.
So amazing. I had terrible instructors for 101A and 101B, but Laura is simply the best! TAKE HER for both 201A and 201B if you can. You will learn so much! She makes you feel comfortable speaking in class (even when you mess up), which is half of the battle in a language class. Grades consistently. Attendance is mandatory. Highly recommended!!!
Laura is the best professor I have ever have ever had, in any subject. Take a class with her, elle est la meilleure professeure de français!
A bit rude and puts you down.. I'm pretty sure my french-confidence level has dropped after a few weeks. Today she yelled at me because I gave the incorrect answer. Now I'm really scared to go to class..
Tests and essays take a while to be handed back. Also, she doesn't post grades so you won't know how well you're doing. The class moves along pretty quickly so don't fall behind or else you're screwed.
Very nice but just seems to be going through the motions and is not into teaching beginning French. We don't know how we are doing because she doesn't post grades.
The class goes at a nice speed, slow enough for some people who have a harder time understanding French. I just wish she could post grades so we can see what we need to work on. Overall, she is a nice lady
She talks a lot and goes on wild tangents. When asking you opinion, she often splits hairs about what you said. If you meant to say film noir was a mood but you said genre, she'll correct you. No exceptions. It seems like her opinions about films are the only valid ones. Out of class, you get the feeling that you're wasting her time. Avoid her.
She's very knowlegeable about the subject: French cinema, European cinema, American cinema. We actually get to discuss films in class for a change (some students sometimes talk too much though). Movies are awesome and we had a Halloween special! It's my second course with her
She's quite friendly during class, but once it's over she seems like a different person. If you ask a question afterwards, she just says one sentence and then ignores you.
She's quite nice and friendly. The class goes at a nice speed, not too fast for those who have some catching up to do. The work isn't intimidating so that's a plus
Her teaching has NO direction! She's cool personally and really smart but so far I can't stand this class. I think this is her first time teaching it, and part of the blame is on my class because is not great at participation. Still, I would not recommend her for intro to i/st.
She is really into this subject, but expects SO much out of you with blogs and essays and midterms...it's just a heavy workload and totally turned me off of international studies as a major.
Class was not easy. She expects students to blog at least 250 words twice a week, she hardly goes over the readings, and held the midterm and final ONLINE, even though the class is face-to-face instruction. She expects flawless papers with little to no instructions. Her deadlines are always changing. She's fun but doesn't really teach the subject.
Ceia is willing to help you learn about the 6 major cities. The class is an EASY A because she goes easier on freshman. This class double counts for two GE requirements: Humanities and Global issues. The workload is light but there’s a reading a week. She is really nice and has a cool accent.
I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to study aboard. The class focuses on six major cities and their "golden age." There is a weekly reading, along with questions, but it is no biggie. Plus, you'll fall in love with Dr. Ceia's accent.
Great teacher. Really helps you improve your French accent and pronunciation. Easy homework, 1 paper, 2 projects, midterm and final. What i really liked was that Dr. Ceia isn't a native French speaker so she really understands the students and offers tips on how to learn the material. I really recommend taking a class with her.
She had an interesting accent but at times you could not understand what she was saying. Her reviews for tests were very broad and really did not have anything to do with the tests. There was a lot of readings involved and online discussions. She wasn't very helpful when asking questions and was really strict with grading.
I/ST 200 is a class heavy on reading. Hardly any HW, her test however, are really hard. The class average was usually in the low 70s. However, her class is totally doable. I got an A. Just study really hard for her midterm and final. She is a really nice lady. If you ever need help, go ask her. She is willing to help in any way. You'll learn a lot!
Easy A. Weekly readings and online discussions that's manageable. Doesn't require a book for the class since she emails a pdf of the reading. Her tests and pop quizzes are relevant to the reading assignments about the one of the six cities the class focus on.
She can be an intimidating person to ask a question to and can often be a little rude in the way she responds to students. Tests are exactly like the study guide so focus on that. She missed a lot of class and we didn't even finish the text book. we had 1 quiz and one test. She doesn't like to answer students questions sometimes.
She has a very good understanding of French and her teaching/explaining of the language is top notch. However she is very intimidating and I didn't feel comfortable asking questions because of her condescending demeanor.
Although this class seems strange and dead boring at the beginning, you will learn to love it. There is only one extensive creative writing essay, and the midterm and final is essay based. Get ready for some boring lectures, but once you get to know Dr. Ceia her personality attracts enough enjoyment to really get some fun out of the class
Honestly, the class is a killer if you don't really enjoy history. But, I mean. It was definitely worth the taking in the end. I did enjoy it towards the later half of the class because I felt like she was a lot nicer? Her accent is love. She's not good about reminding you if she posts something up or updating grades. But it's pretty manageable.
Ohhh french cinema. Opened my eyes to a different universe. Jean Luc Goddard, est tres cool! Prof. is very passionate and knwledgeable about the subject. Likely to take more European cinema courses. Very interesting person (killer fashionista, a +) and highly recommended if you are interested in cinema in general.
Dr. Ceia has been nothing but helpful, encouraging, and empowering to me both inside and outside of the classroom. I admire her intelligence and quirkiness and lecturing. I only hope to have as much knowledge as her after my studies!
IST 490 is not easy at all. Dr. Ceia, however, makes it tolerable. The class is heavy on research. Dr. Ceia expects you to mess up....a lot, she is there to help you create the best original research paper. She will break down your paper all the time, but in the end you will be proud of your paper! Take her! She is always willing to help you.
I do not recommend this class. She grades super hard and this class kept me from getting a 4.0. I did not think she was that nice and she only answers your emails half the time. She told us she would grade easy but then did not. I ended with a B even though I worked very hard in this class. Make sure your discussion board responses are very good.
I do recommned this class. Its a lot of work because it's online. You have to write, but you do in your own time. I only had e-mail contact with her. The essays were 4-6 pages long, 2 of them. She cancel our first quiz because the grades were too low. I thought that was nice of her. I learned alot about the world in this class. Very informative.
She knows a lot about French cinema and is hilarious. We had the option to make a film inspired by the new wave instead of a paper which was very helpful and fun to do. Does not remember your name, unless you participate often. There is a lot of discussion about the films. I am now a fan of French cinema. Pierrot le Fou was amazing!
Most of the films that are assigned are pretty good. The Lectures help give a historical grounding to all the films. Probably need to do the online readings for the quizzes.
Made it way too hard for a level 100 class. Only talked about what was going on in the news, not about the textbook readings but based the tests on them. Said the midterm was going to be multiple choice then when it was time to take it, there were multiple short answer questions no one knew. Threatens to do "eenie meenie" if no one participates
On the first week, I thought she would be a strict professor, but she is extremely sweet and intelligent (she said she is strict the 1st week so people won't take advantage of her). Her lectures are very informative, and she really knows how to analyze things. No homework, just 3 papers. She really prioritizes what a student learns from her class
Personally I never want to take her class again. If you want to really learn something about globalization please take other Professors. I wanted to learn something more from PowerPoints but she always just sit there and talk to us for the whole class and I feel my time is wasted. She does not follow syllabus and provide the exam that is not coverd
Wonderful person who is intelligent and a great lecturer. HOWEVER, the amount of reading she assigns is enough for five classes put together in one. It is unmanageable and unrealistic. Her tests are manageable if you do all the reading. Problemreading is very unrealistic if you sleep, eat, shower, or have any other classes or obligations.
Second time having this teacher. I think she is a fair teacher, expects a lot of a student because she is preparing student for the real world. She is funny, intelligent, and genuinely wants to help students. She can grade hard, so it's not an easy A if you write whatever you want. You actually have to think and apply yourself. I liked her!
She assigned a ton of reading in the first half of the class. You had to read it all for the midterm. Then, she stopped posting reading homework, and the final exam was based on one lecture. The class became significantly easier. Tough grader on the research paper, but if you talk to her early about it she is willing to help. Beware of her sass.
This class was the class that prepares you for the study abroad and internship. You meet just 8 weeks and in the end of the semester, you should make a powerpoint video presentation about the internship that you will be doing or the country that you will study abroad. The resume is the biggest part of the grade so you should have good resume (45%).
Honestly never met such a rude professor. Passed the class with ease but shes so vindictive and combative when she talks to students. Its disappointing that she would be allowed to be chair of IST but I think its because not a lot of students speak out. When I took the 5 week course everyone acknowledged how rude she was. Take at your own risk.
Only received one grade back before final grade. Disrespectful. Only wants to hear her own opinion; Made it feel unsafe to speak up in class. Didn't follow schedule. Disappeared once online save some YouTube videos for discussions. Clearly passionate, but quit teaching once online. Wish I knew my grades before final grade to try to up it.
This person is the real deal. Inspirational lectures on French cinema and poilitcs. Yes, she is political and opinionated. She doen't suffer bigots. No book, a lot of articles online though. If you want to be inspired and motivated take her. You do need to put in the work though. No slacking if you want an A.
Her lectures sometimes consisted of her past life, she would sometimes forget what she talks about most of the time. Apart from that, she sympathizes with the students at times. Ceia wasn't heavy with the online discussions and the term paper. She does her best for her students to learn about the real world and understand the basics of the economy.
No. Don't do it. Take another class or professor if you can. I don't have the capacity or the words to describe her. Her work is unnecessarily extra for a GE class and she grades very tough for absolutely no reason. The class is made up of 90% discussion posts and she reads every single word of them, you've been warned. Please help.
Honestly, I wish I would've read these ratings before I took her class! The class is graded is a lot of reading and filled with discussion posts, her quizzes include 3-5 short essay responses with only 1 1/2 - 2hours to do them. She is also a hard grader. If you're taking this class as a GE PLEASE save yourself and find another class.
This was an online course. One or two discussions per week, 2 open book (!!!) short essay questions. She will read what you write. a good thig, if u want to learn. You start to to care about what happens in the world. Responds immediately to emails.
Class is online. Discussion board every week counts for class participation. You have a week to do the readings and respond. She sends emails with comments every week. She cares. She is the only online professor to congratulate me on my performance. Yes, not a breeze to go through, but this college.
Fun and informative class. Films are unusual not always what you expect. She has energy and makes jokes.
Class was online, but she managed to make itfun. Intense film dissections every class so she makes you truly learn the meaning of mise en scene, cinematography etc. I leanred more in this class than my regular film courses in FEA. Take her class. She is real.
Professor Ceia is incredibly unprofessional She responded to student feedback with hostility and failed to make the class engaging. She focused too much on simple film elements and aggressive with students. Do not take her classes if you work in addition to school. She changes students grades on a whim. Worst Professor I've had so far at CSULB.
I took this class literally for credits because cinema class seemed to be a fairly easy one however this class was hard to even understand. There is barely any assignments and her instructions were vague at most. She had a TA to grade our work and the grades kept changing nonstop and the deadlines were uploaded last minutes.
Firstly she kept changing grades constantly. Secondly she only cared about her own opinions and put down other students interests and opinions. Then she gets mad when you dont participate after she goes on a ten minute lecture about why she doesnt like the film that you mentioned. Very unprofessional and rude. Makes you not want to participate.
Very tough grader with little leeway. She also consistently got mad at us for not understanding certain material when it was her responsibility to teach us. She may be a decent person, but her character in this class made me dislike her. Her standards were so high and she made us read rather than teaching us. Avoid this course.
Wow. It seems like we did not take the same class like the people below. Someone haf an big axe to grind and posted 4 times? Class was graded by a grader, not her. She started all classes asking about what is upbeat in our lives something to look forward to. I believe the person rantinc below is really dishonest.
Class had several written projects all in the first half of the semester. Easy A if you follow the instructions.
Very knowlegeable professor. She makes you learn social history around French cinema. Her voice is sound therapy. Class is not hard if you take notes during lectures. Open-book essay midterm, but lots of small assignments during the semester. I wish she taught more film courses.
This was an online summer class. I think she a lot easier on student in the summer. It was not easy to get an A, if you post your discussion on time. She respond fast to emails.
With covid and all she was very understanding. Projects were doable. Class ends after 8 weeks and all work is done in advance, one final project. She give examples for students to follow. Not a hard class and required.
I was in this class and preparing to go abroad and I had meetings with her during the semester and she guided me through every step to take and how to speak to the people at the consulate for student visa. She has experience and gives really good advice. Dr. Ceia has been nothinf but very good and generous to me.
Took weeks to grade simple assignments, wouldn't assign work for weeks but then would give multiple assignments all due at the same time, doesn't give clear instructions, passive aggressive when I asked questions/when she left feedback on work. I do not recommend.
Terrible. Inconsiderate teacher and assigns work randomly. A lot of reading
This professor was very nice and respectful to me. The assignments are: weekly discussions, 2 exams open book and one final project. She said there are no pop quizzes in this class because students have been caught cheating online. Weekly discussions are not graded tough but exams are a bit tougher, it's not an easy A that's for sure.
I/ST 100 has been one of my favorite classes this semester and has opened my eyes to what CSULB has in store for me. I learned to much about the world.
I fell behind and she reached out and helped me finished my assignements and pass the class. Ask for help, she will give it to you.
I would highly recommend Professor Ceia to any student interested in learning about globalization studies. Her deep knowledge of the subject matter & the engaging materials she assigns make the class both informative and enjoyable. I learned a great deal already in this class, including the ways globalization affects various aspects of our lives.
This class requires a lot of reading and papers. There are also some long videos to watch to understand what to do for assignments. The quizzes are hard, so be prepared to read and study for them in order to pass. Since it was a online class your best bet would be to reach out to the prof with questions/concerns and just let them know you care
A lot of work and it's tedious. The topics are often interesting and have opened my eyes to a lot of different topics, it's just the videos and readings she assigns are very long and her grading is pretty harsh at times.
This class opened my eyes to being a global citizen. She reads your weekly submissions, so follow the rubrics posted in the syllabus. Readings are 20 pages a week + short videos. Exam was open book. If you want an easy A don't take this class. If you are mildly interested and do at least half of the work, you are fine. Ask for help, she gives it.
This class was cool. You gotta put in your work every week to get a good grade, but seriously, it's like I'm living in a whole new world after taking it. I think it's super important for the world we live in today.
This class is work every week but she gives constant feedback for improvement. Honestly my best online class so far at CSULB. She is passionate about the content and you learn alot. If you ask for an extension honestly she will give it to you.
Pick a topic for our final paper, write about why it was important to us, and then give a brief outline all in one discussion forum where the entire class had to participate. I did that and got 3.5/5. She couldn't be bothered to give 100% just because I wasn't clear enough on my outline. What the heck THE hardest grader for a 100 LEVEL CLASS.
Dr. Ceia has been an amazing teacher and person. Make an appointment to see her in person during her office hours. She will listen to you and help. She cares. Take her classes, you will learn a lot.
Took IST 100 online with her, great experience! Genuinely cared about our progress, giving feedback on every single post. The exams not easy, but were open-book. She emailed us every week and praised the best posts. IT felt nice to be recognized. Overall, she's just really cool. Down to earth and supportive. Really enjoyable class.
Seriously, the professor is super awesome and kind. They give really helpful feedback on your posts and provide clear guidelines for the final paper. Plus, the subjects they teach are genuinely interesting.
This class was super fun and covered loads of cool, new topics. There's a discussion post each week, but the prof is really helpful and chill. Make it awesome!
Dr. Ceia is truly an amazing professor. I felt like our class developed such a close bond with her. I know some students believe she gives off this unapproachable vibe, but its not true. She wants to get to know everyone, individually. I highly recommend her class!
Only god knows how Dr. Ceia has been teaching for as long as she is. Every class felt like the circus came to town. The whole semester we only had 6 assignments, two of which were worth 100 points EACH. The entire semester felt like she was throwing things at the wall and hoping they would stick. Her syllabus has zero clarity or guidance.
Professor Ceia did not answer emails until much later or never at all. She reads every assignment and gives feedback on what to fix but does not elaborate on how. However, most of the semester we had a decently light work load. Her midterms and finals were essays paired with quizzes on canvas.
Dr. Ceia answered all my emails and helped me when I fell behind. She met with me during ZOOM office hoours. One of the few that cared.
Easy class. Each module lasts for about 2 weeks. Topics include resume writing, cultural orientations, intercultural competence, social identities, power/privilege, and internship/study abroad module. Overall asks you to self reflect a lot. Ceia grades slowly but tries to make the class more personable by writing specific comments for each student.
Okay prof, didn't really vibe with her. Teaches and grades like I/ST 100 is an upper div class, a lot more work and stress than necessary. Modules consist of videos and chapters from the textbook. Grade based on weekly module discussion boards, midterm and final (multiple choice, short answer, and essay), and a final essay.
Taking the final now without midterm grade. You were mandated to pretend to have your perception dramatically changed from each module, which consisted of outdated Youtube videos only. If you did not fake an epiphany each week in the discussions your grade went down. Acted like we needed to learn how to think but she taught with sub-minimum effort.
content was interesting, however, for class itself, watched videos/documentaries and had to read the WHOLE book for discussion posts and exams. said we only needed 200 words but needed around 700 to have an "A" worthy amount of elaboration/connect etc. Very picky grader in general & slow midterm grader (was when grades are due). Not an easy A
The videos were fun to watch and talk about but the grading criteria were confusing and not very straightforward. Barely graded the midterm AFTER I had already taken the final and docked me major points, bringing my A to a C. She would tell me my work was amazing and then give me a B without a clear rubric showing me what points got me docked off.
Professor Ceia is a caring instructor who provides helpful feedback. The workload is manageable, and the course covers interesting topics. Unstuck ai was a game-changer for my exam prep.
Worst online class to take. For an online class, she is NOT actively online. Extremely tough grader for assignments that are not even worth that much. Most discussion posts are on long videos. All modules are not as accessible for being online. She gives feedback but not enough to help you progress for future assignments.
She gives very good feedback on your weekly responses. Wants you to write in your own words and reference course materials. Yes, grading is not an automatic A, but she does give feedback. Plants extra credit easter eggs in the weekly feedback announcements. Mock midterm and deatailed review sheet.
she's okay but takes a long time to grade assignments. Really hard to get full points on discussions even though your response has everything she's looking for, she'll find something you can improve on. Wasn't the worst but a bunch of reading and videos to watch for each discussions. Definitely have to put it effort to get an A, but is manageable.
She is NOT accessible outside of class. In fact, it is so hard to reach her. The assignments are SO long for being ONE point each. She grades so HARSHLY. Did extra credit but it does nothing due to the fact the assignments are all ONE point each. She takes forever to grade as well. The content is just videos off YouTube. Don't take her.
Grades tough at the beginning, but after midterm assignments got full points. Gives PRACTICE EXAM and a STUDY GUIDE. Did not get that in *any* of my other classes. Modules are interesting. Detailed instructions for writing posts and if you follow it you get full points. RESPONDS to emails pretty fast. Not an easy A but a rewarding class.
I really enjoyed this class. The textbook is clear and the subjects are interesting. Some videos are long, but you can't get a degree on TikTok. Yet. :D Some people are not into reading long texts, but I don;t mind it as much. I would take her again.
Get ready to stress over 1 point per discussion. Harsh grader and can't get in contact with her outside of school hours, appointments are very specific. Readings and discussion posts every week, for discussion posts she'd give us a word count but then say we'd have to exceed the word count to get full points. Honestly run if you can.
I was constantly stressing over her assignments that were worth barely any points, and her grading was very hard. You need to be specific and very clear for her to give you full points. I am a pre nursing major and put a lot of effort into my work and yet this class was very stressful for me. do not recommend her but concepts are interesting.
Dr. Ceia's class wasn't hard but the way she organized it was. I worked so hard in this class 24/7 and didn't even get an A and was close. She didn't even put in extra credit. When I met with her she was passive aggressive. The material was fun to learn but graded harshly for no reason. Choose a different prof if you want the grade you deserve.
Dr. C. graded hard early on but a lot easier after the midterm. For the final paper you could write about whatever genuinely interested you. The stuff covered on immigration honestly changed how I see my own family's story. Final exam was three big takeaways from the course. Take this class if you actually want to learn something meaningful.
This class taught me so much about myself, globalization and my writing. As a freshman, I was constantly leveling up my writing and study habits. No other course has pushed me like this. College feels like a new chapter, and this class was the page that opened my eyes to fresh topics and writing methods.
She grades very harshly. I had to try really hard and spend many hours and assignments that were worth one point. She DOES have Extra credit opportunities but, they aren't worth too much. She's VERY critical and difficult to reach at times. However, she will give you personal feedback if you email her.If you are willing to put in the work, take her
Taking this class right now for summer and I really like it. The professor is laid back and always gives a lot of feedback. Which actually helps. Everything is open book, so you can focus more on understanding the ideas. The topics are honestly interesting and make you see things differently, like where your food is coming from comes from and it
