Good teacher...crazy exams!
Other than the final, she made the course extremely easy

She makes sure you understand before she moves on

Really good class, twisted exams, make sure you know your stuff!!

Really great prof. Very enthusiastic! Good notes!
she's great!!..her notes were well-organized..learned alot from her
Superb prof that explains thing really well, even though she is a bit fast, but her notes are so easy to follow. The exams is a bit more tricky but still an excellent prof.
Great prof, cares about her students, very helpful!!
She tends to be a bit fast, but she makes sure the class understands the material before moving on. She asks for alot of details and specifics in exams, which tend to be hard and tricky exspecially her final. STUDY!
Great professor. Enthusiastic, incredibly helpful, and explained concepts very well. She also genuinely cared about her students and their performance in the course and did her best to make sure they succeeded. Very tricky exams, however.
Everyone knows that Deakin is the best prof for chem 101. On those survey forms that they give out, her average rating is 4.8/5, the highest rating of the profs. Awesome notes (also online), but hard exams. Know your stuff.
She is terrible. Her midterms class avg was 21 out of 40. She wants us to do bad. I have never had a worse profesor.
Dr. Deakin is a terrible professor. She is dull and has absolutely no desire to TEACH her students. The two biggest challenges in her course are having to teach yourself the material and staying awake through her lectures
She is a good prof, provides very complete notes on the web.. but watch our for those tests! They are killer
I found her a great lecturer and really enjoyed her class most of the time. Killer exams, so you have to know your stuff, but a good teacher so it works out in the end.
She is awesome! she goes really fast but her notes and explanations are clear and great. study and work hard for the tests though, and don't be afraid to ask her questions, she's very willing to help you understand concepts. great webCT as well.
Without her help, I wouldn't have passed the course, let alone done well. I was in her office at least once a week and always got the help I needed.
she's sooooo fine, she blows my mind.
shes a really good chem prof, one of the best at u of a. Her tests are hard, but they are fair. Know your notes and youll be fine. oh yeah, solomen rules!
Had her for 101 and 102 and she is my best prof. I didn't like chem but this wa sthe class I always wanted to go to. Always stayed awake in class, the classes were informative and interesting, and i didn't feel stupid for asking questions.
Dr. Deakin is an awesome prof. She makes chem simple. Her notes are awesome and she always explains concepts clearly. Her exams are tough, but very fair. She never throws anything at you that you haven't seen before. She's easily the best prof I've had.
dr. deakin is an amazing professor, classes are interesting, informative and fruitful. I consider myself lucky to be in her class. cheers
Teaches well, but better understand the concepts because she's gonna put something you haven't actually seen on the exam, but it can be solved.
best prof i've had so far, really structured, handouts, u get out 5 mins early every class, walks u thru example problems, nice person
She likes to teach. I was pretty stoked on her after the first few weeks, made me want to come to class. Written notes and online. It's good to go to her class, don't skip for months at a time. Her exams are good, mostly quizzes, then a heavy final.
The best prof! Does everything she can to make sure that everyone understands everything and if you don't, she just keeps trying. Never seen a prof so concerned about actually teaching and not just presenting the material and hoping for the best
HER CLASS IS USELESS, ALL THE NOTES, WORD FOR WORD, ARE ON THE INTERNET, DON'T GO!!!
Best Inorg. prof. A+ in each. Not that bad exams if you attend lectures and study. Don't read the textbook, her notes are sweet. Very approachable, will go out of her way to help you. She makes the class interesting by dealing with current research.
your the woman. You speak clear, you dont have an uncomprehendable accent like some teachers i had to put up with and your notes were straight to the point. Awesome teacher, i really enjoyed her class and her teaching skills. I highly recommmend her!
Escellent teacher, writes some hard questions.
Excellent teacher. By far the best teacher I had in first year. Willing to go out of her way to help and makes sure that the whole class gets what's happening before moving on. Excellent notes.
Good professor. Her exams are tough though.
u all said what i had to say, wouldlike to add that she always reviews what we did last class and even takes notes on them, also gave us this great equations map that helped alot, even students from other classes got a hold of her notes to study!WOW!
i hated general chem for the longest time, but she teaches well and has good notes on the net, + problem sets and handouts that are very useful. exams are fair, easy if you study. Best 101/102 teacher imo
i love this prof, she has the best notes, and is always clear about everything she wants u to know. nothing is ever out of the blue, always do the problem sets!!! most questions on the exams are similar to them.everything is on the net if u need notes too
Definately the best prof for chem I ever had, learned half of chem 161 from her in 101. perfect prof for teaching how to survive in university. if you go to class, study the notes, and do the problem sets, you WILL do well.
She's great!
Best chem prof ever. Do the problem sets and you will do great on her exams. I use to loathe chem, but now I have a change of heart because of her.
Enthusiastic, smart and funny
Awesome prof!! General chem was never this interesting in high school. I actually look forward to her classes. Her notes are great, and her problem sets are really helpful. Her good morning questions are examples of what she might ask on a test. She'll answer any question!
The curve sucks big time. Class and quizes are too easy, so unless you plan on getting a 90, you won't be getting anywhere. Class average is way to high, the bell curve isn't nice on you at all. Good prof though, i give her that. Great prof actually.
Great proff! Notes very good. Class is interesting lots of current information added to class. Always helpfull and very nice when you go for help. Adds humor to class so every once in a wail you get a laugh. Very clear in lecturs and makes sure everyone knows whats going on.
Excellent prof, but you have to work very hard to get anywhere and the curve is normally very high. If you actually study, you'll do fine. You have to study though.
Everyone has said it now - GREAT PROF. She does examples STEP by STEP, and gives great summaries. She doesn't talk in lecture, she TEACHES. Her tests are fair, lots of info of course, but nothing she hasn't taught. A really funny and intelligent prof. Listen closely for hints in class.
DEAKIN IS A GODDESS! She is the best Chemistry teacher. Sure, the stuff is hard, but she makes the class entertaining! She doesn't take herself too seriously, and it makes it easier to learn from her. She is brilliant and hilarous! "What, did he chew on a space shuttle?"
I LOVE her! If only all my profs were this good!
Best prof hands down. Smart, sensible and down to earth when it comes to teaching.

awesome! great detailed notes and clarity. absence of accent helps great deal! =Þ class ave is always high. must work hard to keep up! =Þ
I love her. She's the best prof at the university.
really great prof. notes are very clear and concise. examples are easy to follow and all steps are shown so you'll know what your looking at when you review for your final. minimal time with the textbook is required. would definetly recommend this prof!
Amazing prof, who could not like Deakin, its too bad that if u aren't in her class right now its likely full by now (don't switch out if u are... trust me... stay.). Fair tests, fun lectures, good lecture notes.... she is an amazing prof.
nice, clear, helpful
the best prof at the university by far. if you arent in her class, get into it!!!
very good prof, however the CURVE WILL GET YOU !!!!
very clear and reasonable
Absolutely fantastic! The best prof on campus. I highly recommend her class!
Incredible instructor. Lectures were organized and concise, problems given were excellent study guides for the test. The rest of the ratings are definitely accurate.
She really isn't as great as people are making her out to be. Her lectures are dry, her tests are hard, and she can be very moody. She's nowhere close to the best profs at the UofA, and I'm not some naive first year student so I should know.
really good prof, just do the problem sets, pay attention, show up to most of the classes and you will do fine. there are much worse chem profs at the university so be glad if you get her.
102 is 102, the material is the same each prof, but deaking really teaches you how to do well, and honestly cares about her students. Good prof, highly recommended
She isn't the best professor/lecturer but at least she explained concepts clearly and tried to enforce basic chemistry concepts with the problem sets. One of the better chem profs out there.
Had this prof for a three week spring course. She got right down to the point and was really clear. If you study her notes then you'll do fine.
Took her spring class and she was great. She teaches easy ways to look at and solve problems. Do the questions and you should do well in this class.
Her spring class is much tougher than regular session class. You can compare her exam paper with other prof's. The class average is also lower. There are always some tricks in her exams let you lose mark. One hard question is even weighted to 28%. If you got B in her class, you are able to get A in other prof's class in regular session.
Shes an awesome prof. Very helpful and funny at times. But her exams were frickin hard I was like "er?" through out her midterm and final. The quizzes arent so bad though.
Very good at explaining and providing examples, but WATCH OUT for the tricks on the final. Final is waaaay harder and way trickier than midterm.
this class was BRUTAL. I used to like chemistry, but now have a deep hatred for it. Deakin's exams are tough.
She goes through her lesson plan well in advance, and manages her time so that she lets us out exactly when class is over. She does a quick review on the previous days lesson plan before every class.
I chem 101/102 with Dr. Deakin during the spring session, and I have to say that she is by far the best professor I have had. Very prepared and has excellent notes, extremely helpful, and it seems like she genuinely cares about students. Midterms are easy if you do the problem sets, finals are fairly challenging.
Excellent prof! She has very good notes and she genuinely cares about her students. She does her best to make sure that her students understand the concepts. She regularly takes student questions and posts them with the answers and at the start of every class she would do a breif overview of what was taught the class before.
Deakin is organized and gives fairly good notes which are available online if you happen to miss something. Exams are on the hard side, but not impossible. Averages are reasonable; in the 60% range. She's a good enough prof, but not the best I've ever had.
one of the most professional teachers that i have seen... she is organized, her notes are all available on the internet, and if you study for your midterm and final you have a really good chance of getting at least a B - in that class... the same goes for chem 102 cause i had her in that class too..
She was an extremely good prof. She was funny when she wanted to be. However, you have to study like mad to do well on her exams! Do all of her problem sets and her practice midterms. Chem 101 was ok, but 102 was kinda brutal
Amazing professor! Extremely helpful, and her tests are very fair. If you go to class and do the problem sets you should do well. She is very easy to approach if you have questions, and truly cares that you understand the material.
Deakin is a great prof. Smart and very helpful. Her exams are fair and if you seriously study, you beat class average. I highly recommend her if you are taking chem 101/102.
Laura Deakin is a very good professor. Although her exams may be challenging, they are fair and she makes sure that she teaches you enough so that you understand the content well. She is a very helpful professor and is very concise when teaching.
I didn't find her as good as everyone made her out to be. Her notes are clear though. Not the best I've had, not the worst.
Very helpful prof with lots of examples and practice problems. She can be funny when she wants to be.
Extremely clear notes at a quick pace in class. Really intelligent prof who knows her stuff AND how to teach it. Her exams are pretty much straight out of her notes and she posts tons of practise exams. A note of advice though, she seems to be MUCH harder in CHEM 102 than 101.
Best prof I've ever had. Very clear lectures and interesting too. Knew her stuff and it showed. Changed my schedule to take her in 102 cuz she was so good.
Awesome to learn from. Very good teaching ability. Very good notes.
After 5 years, finally a great prof, they are hard to come by. Loves what she does and is great at doing it. If you have ANY problems she is amazingly willing to help you, just be aware that the course is intense and difficult.
Possibly the best prof I have ever had in 6 years at U of A. I had her for both Chem 101 and 102, and she made all the material in both courses extremely easy to understand.
Really good professor. Her notes are really clear and her tests are fair. Definately recommended.
excellent excellent prof! notes are concise and clear, makes concepts easy to understand. not very approachable outside class however, and i found a bit of discrepancy from what was taught in class to what was on final and midterm. Concepts that she spend lectures on did not have a single question on either exam, while sidenotes were emphasized.
Greatest Chem prof ever, she make the material so interesting!!!
very good at teaching...continued to relate what we were learning to real life, and gave pratical applications...spent time learning the basics, and made sure they were understood by all...textbook was used to gain a deeper understanding...all in all a good prof
she teaches VERY well. you walk out of each class actually learning something, provided that you pay attention
Deakin's a great prof. Very responsible and very helpful when you see her during office hour! Try to get a seat near the front tho; or else you might not hear her in the back. Study her notes and you should be fine for the exam.
Deakin's a great prof. Very responsible and very helpful when you see her during office hour! Try to get a seat near the front tho; or else you might not hear her in the back. Study her notes and you should be fine for the exam.
wonderful professor. seems to really care about how well her class does and seems to enjoy teaching. very good at explaining difficult concepts
Laura is an amazing prof. Really cares about her students and loves chemistry. Get into this class.
This prod is amazing. Her notes are written for the non-scientific minds. Easy to understand and always helpful. She always has problem sets to help you practice the concepts taught in class. All her notes are posted online after the lecture, but the lectures are extremely useful. I would highly recommend this prof.
I found her fast but direct. Her notes are clear and understandable. I think she's a great prof.
Pretty good at explaining the main concepts. However, wouldn't recommend taking it as a 3 week spring session--it is quite intense and overwhelming. You have 2 1/2 hour lectures and then the 3hr lab right after. I guess if you really tried, it could be done. But, make sure you review EVERYDAY. It is very fast paced.
Probably the best prof I had so far.
Great prof, kept things interesting when topics were quite boring. Made an effort to make sure everyone understood key concepts, actually wanted us to be interested and to do well
Best professor this term really cares about the class and makes sure we understand key concepts . EXCELLENT!!!!!!
Best professor I've had at Waterloo so far, not likely to be beat any time soon. What can I say about her... she made sure everyone understood key concepts, did numerous practice "clicker" questions with the class, answered frequently asked questions for the whole class, did extra review sessions of her own accord, funny as hell.
Awesome prof! Extremely funny, makes coming to class worthwhile. Notes are very clear, easy to understand with what she teaches (not the greatest on their own). Easy-ish midterm, hard final, but fair. Favourite prof/class for first semester!
