its an INTRO to bio course, yet she expects you to understand all AP bio concepts??Barely any info on slides & NO textbook! Lecture material is SO unorganized! Quizzes are manageable but tests are nearly impossible because she will take off for basically anything in short answer. TA's will be your saviors. Also she is terribly RUDE!! BEWARE HER!!
absolutely terrible, lectures are confusing, exams are impossible. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
This is a tough class. She lectures you and then asks you questions way harder then what she taught. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Go to TA's!! You can do it. I scraped by with a B. You have to put in hard work. Go to class. Get extra help but I didn't take AP bio but I did do okay and you can do it too!
She's a nice lady, talks about her kids a lot. If you like signal introduction pathways, you'll love this class.
Lectures are okay and somewhat easy to follow if you pay attention but the exams are the hardest exams I have ever taken. Not only are the weirdly worded and difficult in general then she slams you with extremely critical grading.
Her lectures have no order to them which makes taking organized notes hard. Exams are tough since they require you to apply concepts learned in class to new material. iClicker questions never have a definitive answer which makes studying for the exam hard. Brags about lower than average exam average (high 60s to lower 70s). Avoid taking with her.
She definitely makes you work for the grade, but she gives you all the tools you need. All slides, TA notes and past TA notes are posted to her Moodle and are very helpful for her tests. Her info is more conceptual than most Bio151 courses, but still pretty challenging. Really nice, down to Earth woman though. Discussions are mandatory keep in mind
Many don't like Laura because she makes you think about the material she teaches. Don't be turned away by that! Laura is very willing to help and kind. The class material ( you don't need the book for) is about average toughness, and she has "free points" ie clicker and prequizes to pad your grade. She is a wonderful professor and loves Bio!
Prof. Francis is a great thinker, but maybe needs to work a bit on her public speaking. Pay attention in lecture. So long as you make sure you really understand what's going on though, it's a pretty easy class, especially if you already have a decent bio background. She has a horde of TAs to help if you need it.
Laura was a pretty good professor. From what I understand, she the more difficult of the intro bio professors, but she's extremely competent and knows her stuff. You'll be well prepared for Bio 152.
Francis' lectures are confusing and boring. She is a poor public speaker and when you ask her a question a lot of times she'll say she doesnt know. However if you go in to talk to her 1v1 she clears up confusion. If you want to learn anything ask your TA in discussion about everything. She has iClicker and her tests are hard. Makes you dislike bio.
Laura is a good professor. However bio 151 is a tough class and her test are the most tough exams I have ever taken. She gives you all the mariels you need for this class and the TA class notes are most helpful, but still hard for you to get a good grade because it has open response for every exams. No extra credit and she didn't round grades.
I had her for both Bio151 and Bio285, and I enjoyed her way more the second time. Her slides don't have much but she explains herself very clearly and will often explain it in another way if people aren't understand. She's funny and loves to help the students. I would totally take her class again. She's one of my favorite professors.
She was really nice and friendly and made bio 151 really easy to learn! The quizzes weren't too bad, but at times some of the concepts could get challenging. She's really into applying concepts towards new situations, so her tests can be kind of unpredictable. Overall, her grading is pretty fair and the class is easy if you stay on track.
Laura is a wonderful human being and she really cares about her students. I had an extenuating medical circumstance and she allowed me make up a quiz and an exam. She went way out of her way to help me. My only complaints are that I wish she required a textbook and stuck to a more organized syllabus.
I liked her a lot. I've taken two classes with her and agree that her test can be hard, but are extremely fair. She is one of my fav. professors but has a bad rep. because she teaches intro bio. You will have to work for your grade but it is totally possible to get an A. She makes you learn the material not memorize it.
Class is good, i really like here, respect for doing a good job with at 200+ class, would take again She makes me want to take 285 also
Good teacher. Passed class with an A after studying the material well. Although her class has no structure I would take her again as I found her lecture styles pretty engaging. Great thing about her class is the homework is very easy.
Class is pretty easy for students who are serious about biology. There are so many resources to help u get an A. The slides are online and there are so many TA's. They even take notes for you.
Lets you go early sometimes. Explains things well, and though her review sessions aren't helpful the TA sessions are.
Laura is the best. Tests are hard and have lots of free response. Lot of conceptual questions. Good teacher, and the TA notes saved my life.
When I first heard about her, I tried switching out but thankfully I couldn't. Her class made me realize how much I love biology. Just go to class, go to office hours, go to every TA review session - seriously, they're godsend. And write down everything she says and study, then you'll be golden. It's not a hard class but you do have to put effort.
In general, Laura's class was a pretty good experience. Her lectures are somewhat long, but they are very bearable. She does a good job of condensing material down in a way that makes studying pretty easy. She is like the only Bio 151 teacher who puts short answers on her big exams. This can hurt or help you since she gives partial credit.
I came in expecting it to be a great class. To be fair, I did learn a lot, but it was much more disorganized than I expected (I don't blame her, she was assigned this class at the last minute). Lots and lots of groupwork every single night, but very little teaching goes on in class. Possible to do well, but you have to do it on your own.
Extremely hard tests, doesn't curve, she seems like she doesn't really plan well for her lectures as she mostly just throws random information at your face. Expect to put in a lot of effort just to pass
She knows what she is teaching and she is very helpful too. Go see her during office hours if you need help because she is really there for you. HOWEVER, her exams are really really long and challenging. I took her during my first semester of college so thanks to her for giving me good studying habits but try to take someone else's.
She says buy any intro to bio book, but specifically references the How Life Works textbook, be sure to purchase. I went into this class expecting to get an easy A, having always done well in biology, and left with a C after working my ass off. Homework is quick, easy, but felt irrelevant. She has a great fun personality
goes too fast, exam is so deep, and disconnected with lecture
First day, "Extra credit does not exist". So don't even try. She's very funny but can be pretty rude. I was expecting an intro bio class to be easy but her class is pretty difficult so you will need to put in a little extra effort. Lecture are mandatory and count for credit.
Laura is a really great professor as long as you can pay attention in class. She has a tendency to hop around but once you understand her style it makes sense. Definitely try to draw the diagrams she shows you. Don't skip lectures, the class moves very quickly and theres only about 5 classes per exam (3 exams and a final.)
Laura is an amazing professor! Her lectures go into just the right amount of depth and she explains everything perfectly. Her tests seem a bit difficult but partial credit is very easily earned because they are mostly open response. There is no textbook, there are clicker questions, and all tested content comes straight to lectures so attend class!
Her class is hard. The material is not easy, and you have to pay attention in class to do well. Reviewing the TA notes and taking practice exams helped for her tests. The TAs you get for discussion make a difference too. They are either useless or incredibly helpful.
Tests aren't exactly easy, but if you pay attention in lectures and take advantage of all the material she gives you to study outside of class, you can get straight A's no problem.
If you want to do well write down every single word she says in lecture. If you miss one class you will be so behind. She puts TA notes online which are extremely helpful. Tests questions are worded in a way that require a lot of thinking and are often times tricky. Study--HARD. You can do well but for a 151 level its too much material.
Laura is a smart woman but she sometimes seems to have trouble explaining it to someone at an undergraduate level. The tests and quizzes are not easy so you will have to study for them. She is willing to help and is approachable, but her lectures are not always clear. There is iClicker participation.
She's awesome. You gotta work for your grade though.
she's pretty nice and fun to talk to but not a very good teacher. I find that doing other homework in her lecture is a better use of my time than listening cause she sucks at teaching. Go to TA quiz/test review sessions and learn everything there right before the test. Only reason I did okay in the class. Overall hard teacher.
it was so hard, i got 4 of A this semester except this one, the exam is kind of unrelated with what she taught, it will take you lots of extra work that you should do yourself, to not just memorize but understand. easily to study in class but hardly to get a good grade. be careful.
Her lectures are nothing like the final. Her wording on exams are very tricky
This was her first year teaching this class, so she was still trying to figure out how to format the class. However, she was responsive to student feedback and changed the syllabus based on our thoughts on how much time we spent on things and how much they should be worth.
I'm a student who generally gets As, and this class was no exception. She is big on application of concepts rather than just memorizing material. One of her TAs takes notes of the lecture, so if she goes too fast or it's confusing, the notes are super helpful and contain relevant info for the exams. Clicker. Discussion section is easy.
By far the WORST professor I have ever had. Doesn't even assign a textbook.. who does that ? So much material its extremely over whelming. The final? Completely impossible. I do not recommend by any means.. take any other professor/class if possible.
Very hard class. Her lectures are nothing like whats on the exams or final. Her final was EXTREMELY hard. NOTHING relevant from her lectures are on the final. She does not round her grade. I only needed not a few points but half a point from passing, but she did not give me the half point needed to pass.
Laura is unlike other bio profs. in that she wants you to understand concepts rather than memorize stuff. Read/rewrite the TA notes and go to review sessions. She is a tough prof but if you put in the work you will do well. Her exams are all conceptual but everything you need is in the TA notes. i loved this class, study hard and you will succeed
Prof. Francis is fantastic, that being said this isn't a class you can pass without putting in the effort. She has in class assignments and a few homeworks along with weekly quizzes ( that you can retake up to 3 times). So there is alot of opportunity to boost your grade. If you have the chance to get in a ExlSEL group do it! Super useful!
I was really nervous after reading reviews about Laura. Her class is challenging and she does have high expectations for her students. However, if you join an ExSel group, review the TA notes, go to review sessions, and take pre-lecture assignments and discussion quizzes seriously, you will be just fine! Laura is so smart and I learned so much!
Had to retake Bio and took it with Professor Francis. I absolutely loved her style of teaching because she went through the power points and wrote down notes and really dissected the material to thoroughly explain it. Sometimes things can become confusing because of how in-depth she goes, but if you ask her to clarify she will.
Dr. Francis is the best professor I've ever had. Her lectures are engaging and interesting, and she has numerous TA's taking notes to be posted. She's frequently available in office hours and provides many resources to stay on top of the work. Exams can be tricky, but she offers lots of prep. Really awesome prof.
Overall not terrible, she tries a little too hard to be funny. She's not great at explaining things and rambles a lot but she tries her best. You definitely have to go to class and do well on tests and quizzes.
Awesome professor, always welcome to help with an problems you may have. Wants you to succeed. Does test on things not mentioned in notes but mentioned in lecture, so do go to class. Very reasonable grader.
Ok professor. Assigns a lot of unnecessary work (i.e. perusall assignments). You will do fine on exams if you study hard but its easy to lose points in other areas of class like discussion section quizzes. Lectures are kinda boring and mandatory. She does upload lecture slides and a ton of lecture notes. Does not give extra credit.
If I didn't really like Laura as a person, I would have loathed her class. She doesn't require a textbook but does require a TON of reading. Additionally, there will be a quiz for every discussion, every week there is a pre-lecture quiz, and a quiz every couple of weeks in addition to the huge exams. She does post lecture notes though.
Each week there is something-- an exam, or a damn quiz, in addition to the discussion quizzes and a pre-lecture quiz that happens every week. Perusall is a ridiculous amount of effort and only adds confusion. And although a textbook isn't necessary, you'll do just as much reading if not more. The exams are overly difficult. She asks for a lot.
If it helps, I made an account on this site just to give this professor a bad review. The lectures have so much material and you can never tell what she actually wants you to obtain. Tests are stupidly in depth and always refer to very specific situations. We had like 10 TAs in our class and none of them did anything.
Laura is a fantastic professor. Despite some of the reviews, she provides students with AMPLE opportunity to excel in her class (homework, TA review sessions, TA lecture notes and slides), and although it's not "extra credit", it's something. Most professors don't provide as much cushion as she does. If you take advantage of resources, you'll excel
Laura's class is HARD you have to put in the work but if you do you will learn a lot. Her tests are heavy on free response so you really need to understand the material and not just memorize it. Attendance is done through iclicker and discussion once a week is mandatory (but very helpful!) Would recommend but get ready to study!
Laura's course is very hard and you do need to put much work on it. But you can get good grade if you do so. She is very kind, caring about students and being willing to help us understand whatever in or outside the lecture. TA notes are very very helpful. And of course, persuall is a little bit confusing.
Laura broke down her course grading system really clearly, and included a variety of other graded assignments, like the pre-lecture assignments which are easy, instead of tests only. She posts for each lecture notes which is very helpful. Her tests get progressively harder; her multiple-choice questions are generally harder than the open response.
Laura Francis is amazing. Her lectures are relatively creative and entertaining, and she is a really nice person. She likes to challenge her students (well within reason!), which really pays off in the long run.
Only class I didn't get an A in... and this is my major.....
Lectures are interesting, but she doesn't give clear feedback on tests and quizzes. Exams include many open response questions.
I loved this class so much that I would TA for her if I wasn't so busy
Laura is a kind, caring, and understanding professor. I had her for the BIOTAP biology class, and she always pushed us to go outside our comfort zones to learn new topics. She definitely made my first semester of college better. She often went off topic during the lectures, but she is pretty funny.
I love her way of teaching.
Hardest Bio 151 teacher by far. Teaches her own course material that has extra things no other 151 teachers teach. Probably useful if you're a bio major and need it later on, but makes the course too hard for a first year class and hurts your gpa. She's nice and sorta funny but her class is way too detailed for 151
I loved Laura Francis! Yes, this class can be hard but only if you let it be hard. She makes it easy to succeed. As long as you pay attention in class, go to her her TA review sessions she has twice a week if you are struggling and look through the TA notes she posts on moodle -- you will be all set for a good grade in the class.
I liked Laura. She's sweet and really funny in lecture. However, this is a really challenging course and the exams are tricky! You need to study hard, especially if you don't have a solid science background. But, she gives you the resources you need to succeed. The TA notes that she posts online and the review sessions are helpful.
Unfortunately she can be a difficult grader, and her exams are definitely hard, but when you take them and don't do well; you're left with a feeling of "I could've done more" instead of "wow this professor sucked". I think that alone says a lot. If you're bio or chem major, I highly recommend her. If not, don't take it unless you love biology.
The exams are unbelievably hard even when you have attended all of the lectures. There is either a quiz or exam every week. Laura is all over the place with her teaching and is almost never clear with what she expects us to know. Someone needs to tell this lady to assign a textbook and teach by it because no one ever knows what she's talking about!
Laura is a funny person, but a terrible professor. I received an A in the class, but it was a tough semester. She went really in depth into some obscure subjects, and her exam questions were testing you more on your understanding of the English language than on actual Biology (be prepared for trick questions). Good luck to all...
I loved this class and felt like I was getting a lot out of it. If you are willing to put in work, such as paying attention during lecture, taking notes, going to SI session, you will do fine. If you do not have a somewhat decent biology background, then be prepared to put in more work. I did feel that in this class hard work pays off
Not to hard, and her exams are based on the material learned in class. Write down everything she says/draws, not just what's on the slide. There's a lot of easy points to get from homework and clicker questions. Use the TA notes and review sessions.
Laura does not lecture. The entire class is group learning. So basically, we don't learn anything from the teacher and she's just there to grade stuff, which she is ridiculously hard on btw. The entire class is just about teaching yourself instead of her doing her job.
She believes in "group based learning" which basically means she doesn't teach or lecture and expects you to learn everything either on your own or from your peers. When you ask her questions it is unclear what information you actually need to know and what is excess because she often goes on tangents. Hr feedback is rude and unhelpful.
She knows her stuff for sure but she would get off topic usually which made it confusing when studying for her tests. She's very specific with the answers she wants so make sure to prepare well. The TA review sessions is really where I learned more from than from her. Lecture notes are posted after class which was also very helpful when studying
I didn't learn much during lectures, most of the learning was from the readings and weekly perusal assignments. Go to TA sessions and review the TA class notes to succeed on the in-class quizzes and tests.
Exams are written long responses so you usually need to know your stuff pretty well, difficult class but definitely interesting and covers many pre requisites, one of those teachers you should keep in touch with because she is real and likes to help
She's OK. Her personality is annoying and her exams are pretty tough. They're mostly open response. Even if you know the material, if you don't write word-for-word what she wants you'll get marked down so make sure you write in detail to be safe. Other than that, not much HW and her quizzes aren't bad. Go to TA review sessions, they helped a bunch.
She's nice and knows the subject but I was consistently confused in lectures and always relied on the TA notes later on. The way she lectures along with the mostly open ended exams just doesn't work. It felt like the lectures only gave you some of the information you needed for the exams and just hoping for partial credit from the TAs.
She is pretty knowledgeable most of the time, but the way she presents the info can be extremely unorganized and hard to follow. The tests are mostly comprised of written responses and are pretty difficult. She is completely unwavering with grades, so if the TA messes up grading your paper you're pretty much screwed. Cumulative final worth 2 tests.
Laura is great, she makes the lectures fun and gives you all the resources you need to succeed. Her exams are tough but again, you have everything you need to do well. You just have to put in the effort.
This is my second class with Professor Francis (only because I had to). Her classes are notoriously challenging. She is extremely smart and creative and hopes that everyone gets out of the class to be as skilled. Exams are extremely hard and the final is cumulative. There are much better ways to teach students to be scientifically creative...
Took her intro class 2 yrs ago, insanely hard. Open response exams and difficult assignments. You need to put in 110%. If want a good grade you NEED to go to the review sessions that the TA's hold weekly. That saved my grade. On exams write everything you know in open response questions, TA's are generous giving partial credit. Try another prof.
You learn absolutely nothing in lecture, but you have to go for iclicker credit. Even those who find her personality entertaining will admit that there is little to no merit in paying attention during class. Just go to all the SI sessions and hope for the best! And don't even think about trying to get a good grade on the final.
I love her personality and how she treats her students in lecture, kind and funny. Exams are hard, but do-able - majority is open response, which is good b/c of partial credit! Graded on 6 quizzes, participation, 3 exams and final. Final can replace lowest exam grade. I studied extremely hard for this class and came out with an A. Go to TA rev's!
Dr. Francis tends to be very scattered in class, causing confusion in her students. She often goes on long rants about her personal life. Her first exam was supposed to be part multiple choice and she decided to make it all open response. She fails to provide the required information to pass the tests and quizes. Assessments are very hard.
She's very smart but doesn't have notes on her slides and just says information so you don't know what's important. You can do well by reading the lecture notes and going to TA reviews. 3 exams, cumulative final - all open response. 6 multiple choice quizzes that are somehow harder than the exams. Not a lot of homework, just some Perusall readings.
She's a charismatic professor who is passionate about her field and tries her best to connect with students. She is a TERRIBLE lecturer. Her lectures are composed of diagrams with few notes, and it is never clear what specific information she expects you to know for the quizzes/exams. Not even the TAs or note takers know what to focus on.
Funny and incredibly charismatic, but she REALLY makes you work for the grade. Go to the TA reviews every week, they saved my life. The wording on her questions can be tricky, but a good portion of the exams are open response so you can get partial credit (write everything you know... just do it). Perusall & Pre-lec quizzes are an easy grade boost.
Try to avoid this professor.
Her exams are insanely difficult, all open response. 2nd exam average 65%. Quizzes are very tricky out of 20 Q. But you will learn to work harder. Increase your determination. Make sure you are "metacognitively" ready for this class. If you are planning to take this class, I recommend the instant noodle and caffeine dependent starter kit.
Omg I love her. She makes the subject interesting and is funny. I think what people's problem is the level of difficulty. However, we're (presumably) bio majors; difficult classes are part of the job description. All it takes is a little effort and interest to do well. Plus you learn so much, which in the long run is more important than an easy A.
She is so funny and smart. She made the subject actually interesting. People are complaining about the OR exams but they're so much better than MC because you get to just prove everything you know and get partial credit for stuff. I drew a penguin on one of my exams and got a point for it lol. Go to SIs and lecture and it'll be ok. She's not so bad
I overthought every single question I got wrong on every exam. The questions are worded so poorly and thus do not accurately assess the student's knowledge. 100% open response is ridiculous. Partial credit doesn't help either as the exams are graded ridiculously hard. Good luck... It's a 200 level class Laura chill out
Wicked hard class but so fun. I don't remember a class where I learned more. I feel like if you're pre-med or pre-grad school, this is a class you should take because it's great prep for the level of difficulty you'll experience. If you can't take Laura's class, you probably should be in this field anyway. Who said bio was easy?
Laura is the worst professor I have ever had. She wants students to obtain a greater understanding of biology, yet she doesn't give any tools to do so. I would never take one of her classes again. Exams are all open response and often have random details pulled that she hasn't gone over. Content isn't hard but exams are. Wastes SO much class time.
Laura isn't the best lecturer because she goes off topic a lot making it difficult to know what is important. There's no way I would have done decently without the class notes and TA reviews. Her multiple choice quizzes are brutal making you glad the exams are all free response. Still a good class though, you learn a lot.
Avoid this class!!! She's super unfair with the students and doesn't curve the overall grade when the class exam average is 60 or below. The class material is fine but boom the exam is super hard and nothing like we are taught in discussions or class.
Avoid Laura at all costs. Her exams are worded so poorly that you overthink each question. Her class averages on the exam has never gone over the 70s and she doesn't care how her students do in the class. I've been to every review session and lecture, and I read over all the powerpoints and TA notes and still am not passing. Horrible lecturer.
Seems like taking Bio with Laura was harder than with other prof's, but you don't necessarily get more out of it. Lecture attendance mandatory, tedious/useless perusall readings that require comments. Open Response heavy exams that expected a lot and it wasn't always clear what was expected going into them. Learned a lot in discussion w good TA's
She is one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Do not take class with her! My advice is opt for a different teacher. Her exams are super hard and you never know whats going to be on them due to her lack of clarity in class. She jumps around a whole lot. Quizzes are easier, but she TRIES to trick you on everything! She turned me off of biology!
She's not a great lecturer for Bio 151, but she's smart as hell and overall a really nice lady. She tends to gloss over confusing content and dwell on trivial stuff. Her tests are definitely pretty difficult, you just gotta put in the work.
I'm sure Laura is a nice person outside of class and she's clearly very smart, but wow is she a bad professor. Her quizzes are about 50% unrelated to the actual material and instead just her way of checking if you were paying attention to all the small details she gave in lecture. Her exams are awful marathons with tons of open response questions.
Dr. Francis was referred to by another staff as brutal but brilliant and I think that about sums it up. Shes an MIT doctorate grad, I hope youd expect work. If you want to learn, take her class. If you want an easy A, drop her class immediately.
Laura is a great professor, who is super smart (MIT grad) and really cares about her students. Lectures are sometimes hard to focus in, but her TAs are amazing, so definitely go to the TA review sessions. They also post lecture notes, so it's not bad if you miss a small detail. She's also very good 1:1, so definitely go to office hours if confused!
Laura is an amazing professor. You will learn so much from this class. In order top succeed you really need to work for it. I would recommend attending ALL of Laura's TA reviews and exam review sessions, even if you don't think they'll help you.
I think the class title speaks for itself in terms of how difficult the class will be. If you're prepared to dedicate some time to sifting through dense material, you'll be fine. Tests were challenging but within reason. Weekly reading assignments were dense and often not very helpful. I got a B+ and I certainly could've put more effort in for an A
Laura will work you hard but is a great lecturer and makes sure you know your stuff. All the TAs were great as well, and theres lots of outside help for her class. Witty and funny, I would love to have her again for a class!
Laura is my favorite professor that I've had! She is brilliant and so good at explaining the course content because she knows her stuff. I go to office hours every week, sometimes more than once, and she is so patient and will explain something over and over until students understand. She is such a wondeful person and great prof!
Just the best
The thing that bothers me most about her class is how much work you have to put in for stuff you don't need to know. Many readings and quizzes on stuff you'll never talk about again. The worst part is most exam and quiz questions are just confusing and all over the place. Yes the material is hard but she makes it much more difficult than necessary.
Lectures don't make sense and way too much work. She takes material thats already confusing and makes it even more difficult to understand. All the work she gives, including exams, is conceptual - you'll never be able to get a straight answer from notes or online. I can only speak for myself but she was the absolute worse professor I've ever had.
Laura is an awesome woman. I do like her but for a bio 1 class this was way to hard. The only reason I did well is because I am a chem major and am use to having hard classes but for those who aren't use to this, TAKE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE. Exams are very hard and so are quizzes!!
One of the worst professors at this school. Unfair grader. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. She doesn't respect students
By far the worst professor and worst class I have taken throughout college. The material is not difficult but she asks the most obscure questions on exams and does a horrendous job explaining herself in lecture. I have had no issues in any upper level classes besides this one and I undoubtedly believe it is due to Prof Francis. Avoid her class!
Im a student who doesnt go to umass but took a class there just for the credit. The class was super hard and her lectures are really confusing and hard. BUT she is a really nice person. Ive never had a professor who is as understanding and as nice as she is. I think I would take her class again just because shes such a wonderful person.
Professor Francis was a great teacher and really utilized as many resources as possible for a new online course. This was def a hard class and she's a hard grader but you can tell its bcs she's really passionate about the topics. I appreciated her understanding that online students learn differently than in class students. Her TA was very helpful.
Dr. Francis is great and super easy to talk to! The lectures can be a bit disorganized, but its because she's really passionate and knowledgeable and likes to share cool fun facts that you don't need to know on the exam. She will explain anything that you don't understand and her TAs are always really helpful, too.
I don't understand what the bad hype is for! Her expectations are extremely clear, because the same things are due each week, and it's not an insane amount. She is extremely nice and accommodating, and it's obvious how much she cares for her students. Her lectures are a little messy, but you can easily work through it
She did absolutely NO lecturing but had ridiculous expectations for our work. The resources she gave us were just khan academy articles or websites we could google. The only things she actually did was grade our essays, and after not teaching us anything she was incredibly snarky as if we were supposed to be experts. Would never take again.
Didn't lecture at all, relied on TA's to teach everything. Students pretty much had to learn everything on their own. When students asked questions, her answers were never clear and were often dragged out. Never seemed very approachable. Gave one textbook reading per week, but that isn't too bad. Would not want to take one of her classes again.
The worstnever taught or lectured. Gave us a problem set each week + considered it teaching. TAs taught the class during review sessions. Very snarky and rude. Laura questionably did the bare minimum. Very harsh grader for no reason. Answers to questions were dragged out or nonexistent. Put us in breakout rooms during class. Would not take again.
Professsor Francis is amazing. Do not be fooled tho. This class is not an easy A. You have to be willing to put in the work. One of the best things I did was go to Prof Francis office hours and the TA review sessions. The TAs have review sessions and these were so helpful to my understanding of class content. Professor Francis is super helpful.
Every class, we break into groups and work on a problem set about some topic. Laura wants a "reversed classroom," but the TAs give lectures 2x a week about what we're learning. If you're in biotap and have to take this, go to the TA review sessions. She's a fair grader but waits last minute. She assigned 2 essays during finals week.
Laura is a very tough grader and makes you really work for your grades, but the feedback she provides is helpful. Although she believes in the" flipped classroom" method which isn't my favorite, she and her TAs are readily available to answer questions and explain difficult concepts. Overall, I really enjoyed her class and I learned a lot!
By-far my favorite class this semester. Shes so nice and answers any questions you have. You can tell she really cares about the material and she made online-learning enjoyable. The TAs are amazing and you definitely should go to the review sessions. She doesnt lecture, but office hours are really helpful. Very detail-oriented but you learn a lot
I do not think I did that well but I would not blame her. I overwhelmed at the end of the semester by life. For 3/4 I held a a steady A-/B+ until I messed around on the last assignments. Yes there are lots of lecture videos to watch and lots of homework but she cares and does her best to help and if I dont pass Id gladly take it again with her.
Worst professor i've ever had. Exams all open response&took 7 hours. Final took 23 hours. Cant even explain her own material. Exams ask questions not taught or things she read in science articles not taught to us. Lots of HW, graded slow so cant study w/ old HW. Attended every class&rewatched lectures too. Ignorant considering we're in a pandemic!!
This class is SO informative and I honestly learned so so much. My biggest mistake was underestimating the material and the work I would have to put in. You cannot slack off. The problem sets are toughly graded and the quizzes can be obscure. I do wish Professor Francis was more approachable and an easier grader. This is not an easy class.
One of the hardest, yet most useful classes I've taken. I spent the literal entire day on each exam cuz they are short answer and I wanted to give them my all. I literally took a pause from studying from the MCAT rn so that I could come write this review cuz I appreciative. U pre-med? TAKE THIS CLASS.
I learned a lot from her teaching, but she is a very tough grader. Be ready to work hard and think hard, but her work isn't for nothing. If biology is your thing, she will prepare you to think specifically and detailed like a biologist. I'd suggest taking good notes because there is lots of information. Overall solid choice, just put in the work.
Nice lady but very tough grader. If your answer is one word off she will mark it wrong. Honestly did learn a lot from the class but it is very work heavy with a problem set every week, all exams are open response and assessments every week. If you are not a bio/pre med major take this class with someone else.
I'm kinda surprised by her ratings on here. I personally loved the structure of this class and the material. There is a prep quiz on Tuesdays, and on Sunday all of the weekly assignments are due (discussion, problem set, quiz). The exams (2) are 10 open responses. It seems like a lot but it is very doable and the topics are cool to learn about.
always willing to help students whenever needed.
This class is not for the weak. Unless you really love bio, and have an easy-ish semester schedule, do not take this class. Be prepared to devote 90% of your effort into it. I learned a lot and loved it, but it definitely took a lot out of me lmao. All her exams are open response, so there is no way to pass if you don't know the material
Expect minimum instruction and maximum detail for homework/exams. Most of her lectures are overviews so you'll have to do a lot of self studying. Overall the flipped classroom style didn't really work. If you can, take this class with another professor.
Dr. Francis is passionate, helpful, smart- very nice prof. But please know- this class is very difficult. Writing heavy, lots of homework, exams take hours to finish. You need to know the information VERY well to get a good grade. Take during a light semester where you can devote a lot of time. Flipped classroom model (not my fav).
Laura is a great teacher. Her classes are not super challenging and you learn so much. She is very good at lecturing and can make challenging concepts seem so simple. Her problem sets take a while to complete but trust me when I say that one class with Laura is going to help with every other bio class you will ever take.
I had Laura for the lab and it was the worst mistake of my life. She constantly contradicts herself and never provides insightful feedback. She grades so harshly but only grades one assignment every 3 months. You never know what she wants and she cant explain anything in depth. Never take a class with her she has impossible standards.
I loved Laura's bio151 class. I took it my freshman year and am now a junior and can still say I have never learned so much from a professor as i did from her. Her class is HARD, but the material stays with you. If you dont like cell bio, shes not for you. If you love cell bio and are ready to work hard and have it pay off, youll love laura!
Laura is a perfectly nice person, but has absolutely no idea what's going on in her lab. She takes up to two months to grade lab reports, so don't expect any helpful feedback, but she still has incredibly high standards. She provides no rubrics for any assignments, and yet still expects you to meet her exact expectations. Avoid her if possible.
The actual content isn't challenging, but expectations are very unclear and she takes a long time to grade so you don't know how you are performing in the class.
Weekly homework can take hours upon hours with problem sets being 7-12 pages long (of just questions). You have to teach yourself material before class and then do practice problems in class that she barely goes over. Exams are all open response and last 6+ hours, but she does allow cheat sheets. They're still very hard, and TAs are not helpful
Worst class I have taken so far. Problem sets take hours to finish. Weekly quizzes are difficult. Exams and problem sets were graded WAY too harshly for a class where she claims she does not want you to memorize. For example I had ONE word missing from a paragraph long exam question and it cost me 1% of the exam. Taught myself most of the content.
Prof. Francis is nice, but I unfortunately do not really like the way she teaches the material. Over the course of a week we are expected to take 3-5 mini quizzes (about 4-5 questions each), a normal length quiz, and a problem set. This itself is not bad, but she is a harsh grader. If you write anything slightly wrong, you will lose points for it.
This class is not for the weak. Take it during a lighter semester; exams are 5+ hours long all open responses, weekly quizzes, lecture quizzes, problem sets with all open responses, etc. She takes a very long time to grade things so you never really know how you're doing in the class. She's very nice but the class is just extremely time intensive.
PLEASE save yourself the misery and do not take her class. this has to have been one of the most time consuming and impossible courses ever. it feels like no matter what you do you cant get a good grade.
For a 3 credit class, she treats molec bio like its a 6+ credit class.. Like everyone else said, take this class during a light semester because you will be spending most of your time studying and teaching yourself. After watching 1 hour+ of online lectures and quizzes you have teach yourself, then attend lecture. Al her questions are open response
I should've listened to the other ratings before I signed up for this course. This class is very time-consuming; watching pre-recorded lecture videos on your own every week, problem sets, and multiple (3+) quizzes a week. There's a good group of UTAs, but with no SI sessions, study guides or in class lectures there is a lot of teaching yourself
Laura is an amazing, passionate professor who cares about her students' success, and provides many resources to help those who are willing to put in the work. With that being said, don't expect to be successful in her class without putting in serious time and effort. Amazing class for people who are motivated to truly learn the subject.
This class is extremely difficult for what it is. I spend hours attending review sessions, watching lecture videos, attending lectures, office hours, and teaching myself and can still at best maintain a B average. The problem sets are graded ridiculously hard or nice depending on the TA that grades them where you either get a 5/10 or a 9/10.
I have never been more frustrated with a class. The amount of work that's dumped on us each week is insane. The exams are all open response and are graded ridiculously hard. Avoid this class if you can.
She is a great professor but the class is a lot of work. If you don't pay attention and do the homework and study you will not do good on the exams. There are 4 exams, 2 weekly quizzes and a weekly problem set. Definitely worth the work in this class, I enjoyed it very much.
I had Laura for the lab portion of bio 161H experience. It was her first year back in lab as in previous years she had taught the lecture portion while Caleb Rounds oversaw the lab. Her lab was very work heavy with lengthy weekly lab notebooks and around five lab reports. Her lab instructions were always unclear although the TAs were very helpful.
I should've read reviews before taking this class. By FAR MY WORST EXPERIENCE. this class takes up so much time from other classes, life. Grading is very unfair. I highly recommend not taking this class I promise it would be a bad idea. Amazing teacher as a person. I've never done a professor review before but I felt I had to do one for this.
Laura is a really nice person, but I disliked this class. You're assigned a 8-10 question problem set each week (most questions with multiple parts) and only one question is graded (or part of one question) for credit. She grades extremely harshly and I never felt like her expectations were clear. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
She has 4-6 video lectures, 2-3 class lectures, a problem set that takes hours to complete, many quizzes, an assessment, and a discussion forum EACH WEEK. She gives too much work with little credit for the work you do. The problem sets are graded unfairly and the exams are just impossible even if u try your hardest. WOULD NEVER TAKE AGAIN
I really don't know how anyone in this class gets an A. First test we had, the average was a low C- and she didn't do anything about it, just was baffled by how bad we all did. Problem sets are only graded by one question after spending hours on it. She's a super nice person, but her class is awful, do not take it if you want to save your GPA. :'(
She's very nice and replies fast on email. Very hw heavy, 10-15hrs/week based on difficulty of material. 4 additional lectures to watch/week(watch on 2X speed) + quiz for each lecture due Wed. Due Sun is a problem set(7-9 pages long answer word probs), unit quiz + discussion post. Grading is very delayed, I never knew how I was doing.
Pretty much same as what everyone says. Super tough grader. Disheartening to do long problem sets and then get graded on like one problem. No matter what you put into this course it won't matter. Do not take unless you absolutely have. Don't say you weren't warned.
I spent 2+ hours handwriting the exams to the point where my hand hurts so bad that I cannot continue to write. By the time you start getting grades back in this class it is too late to pull your grade up. Laura told us the exam averages were a lot lower than previous years and did not do anything about it.
To be honest, I learned a lot in this class, but it was too much. We had to watch 4 lectures, 4 mini-quizzes, 1 topic problem set, and 1 topic quiz each week. The topic sets only hurt your grade due to how harsh they are graded and this coincides with how the exams are graded. Take this class with another professor if you want to save your GPA.
Everyone is correct, this class is hard. HOWEVER, there is soooo much help offered outside of class (over 15 hours of TA and professor office hours, review sessions, etc.) every week. I learned so much more in this class than any other class and I have never met a professor who cares as much as Professor Francis. I loved this class!
This class is difficult, but you learn so much during the process! Laura is so down to earth and knows her material well! Also, the TAs are so helpful in answering questions and providing review material. I recommend taking this class with a light class load because you get a lot of work.
Great professor! You won't pass without going to lectures. Everything is short answer including weekly problem sets and exams. Go to office hours because this class is a lot of work.
Save yourself the time. Nice person but never teaches a thing in class. You have to watch hours worth of lecture videos as if its an online course. Heavy workload each week time consuming. Acts like were experts in this intro bio course. Still grades hard considering that exams are ALL open response. Sets you up for failure rather than success.
This class wrecked me. Her teaching style is not effective and the grading is so unfair. I wanted to love this course, I really did- the material is interesting and it's just such a shame that I spent more time stressing over the workload and my grade rather than appreciating the material presented to me. Not a fun time and would not recommend.
This class is very hard for a bio 1 class but you get out what you put in. There's a lot of quizzes and homework so you can't really fall behind, and the content is a lot. That being said, Laura is a genius and I learned so much from this class. Knowing info is not enough, you need to master it. TAs do grade exams very harshly though in my opinion.
One of the worst classes I have taken. Lectures recorded from COVID-19 and we would answer maybe 8 clicker questions during class. An abundance of work that was toughly graded. Prob sets took students 6-8 hours and 1-2 questions were HARSHLY graded. First exam average was a C-, & she said she was "worried" for us instead of actually helping us.
I enjoyed this class and the material but I was receiving 90+ on every exam including the final and still received a B in the course despite not missing any assignments besides a single discussion post. The problem sets that are due weekly are graded ridiculously and are worth more than all three midterms.
I really want to love this class. To be honest you learn more/are forced to learn more than any other bio class I have taken here. However, it is super disheartening and unmotivating by the way things are graded and passed back very late. I very much enjoy the topics we learn about and put my all into each test, but I never see results in my grade.
I took her class as a major requirement and it made my semester hell. I would spend more than 9 hours every week working on the problem set which was assigned weekly on top of the other assignments for that class. Grading criteria were harsh and unreasonable at times. Exams only open response. I did not enjoy her teaching and class at all.
The actual lectures are a waste of time. The problem sets are grades unfairly and are not consistent. Take into consideration they take minimum 3 hours to complete and she picks one question to grade. There are weekly one hour quizzes and quizzes after each lecture video. Flipped classroom is her teaching style. You do learn a lot of information.
If you can take this class with another professor you should. The entire time I felt super unmotivated to try because of how harshly everything was graded and the amount of work. Test all are all open response handwritten (took me 2+ hours). Final was a test plus 60 multiple choice (gave up at 3.5 hours and went home bc I mentally couldnt anymore).
Recorded lectures she makes you watch outside of class and mandatory attendance for in person lectures. Problem sets take an average of 4+ hours to complete per week (7-10 questions) only two graded. She also grades them very harshly. Exams are 3 hours long and the final is 4.5 hours long. Does give topic notes though which I will admit is useful.
Dr Francis is for sure one of my favorite professors at UMass. She is beyond passionate and is ready to help you in any way she can. Yes, there is A LOT of homework/quizzes/exam/problem sets, BUT, she is willing to walk you thru every single question if you take the time to reach out to her. Take notes, study with other students, go to office hours
Keep in mind that the course itself is difficult. However, I have never learned more and retained as much information as I did for this course, it was very intense though. I will add though that she is super understanding if you fall behind and really kind if/when you need extra help. You must put in the work for this course but it is worth it!
The Good: Shes a good in-class lecturer. The Bad: Online lectures poorly explain things (pacing is bad too) -TA review sessions are basically just the online lectures just done by TAs -If you can't make it to the TA sessions to ask questions, theyr pointless -Grading of problem sets is so flawed
Her lecture slides are void of a lot of useful information, so youre forced to watch her boring lecture videos made during the COVID era. She relies on these lecture videos but they are HEAVILY flawed, oftentimes they poorly explain things, bring up more questions than answers and will put you to sleep. Poor at explaining things but expects alot.
I'm giving her a 1 because even though you CAN learn a lot in the class, it requires you to ask a lot of questions because the material she gives is so vague and since she requires you to go into detail about everything, it just causes frustration. Forces you to ask a million questions that should be in thematerial.Lecture videos are just a joke.
Material is not covered clearly and the class is generally just a tangled mess. Inconvenient, never really know if youre answering it correctly. Just stressful....the material isn't really hard, its just hard to learn because the info given is vague and confusing. Shes a harsh grader but doesn't provide enough information to warrant harsh grading.
Insane amounts of work. For her weekly topic problem sets, which are at least 8 pages long, only two or three problems are graded. Feedback given is practically useless, too, and whether or not you get a good grade is entirely dependent on who your TA is. If you have to take her class, make sure that your other courses aren't too heavy.
Laura is a very nice professor who is very passionate about biology. But her exams are all open responses and very difficult. As well as long weekly homework assignments. I spent the majority of my time studying for this class compared to others, but I felt as if I actually learned something out of this class.
not gonna lie, she kind of flopped with this class
After reading all the reviews here, I see what people mean. Ishould have checkedRateMyProf before taking. Her lecture videos really suck, her questions don't ask you about specific things, but she expects you to cover it in your answer, which would be fine but she doesn't provide anything to help you give "robust" answers to these questions.
It's like she's tries to make straightforward material as unclear and confusing as possible on purpose. Most of the burden of this class comes from lack of clarity, poor explanations and the low quality of the resources provided on Moodle.
She's nice, but this class burned me out quicker than a california wildfire. You watch prerecorded lectures on your own time, in-person lecture is just practice. Every week you are expected to do 2-3 hrs of prerecorded lecture, 2 disc posts, 2 quizzes, and an 8-10 page problem set of which only 2 random questions are graded. Don't take her class.
Her class is so DIFFICULT FOR NO REASON! I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN CALEB ROUNDS AGAIN! You have 2 weekly quizzes, VERY TOUGH WEEKLY PROBLEM SET questions, she only grades two questions out of all of that! Her exams are all open response. PLEASE STAY AWAY! TAKE SOMEONE ELSE. HER LECTURES ARE SO CONFUSING. I SPENT SO MUCH TIME ON THIS CLASS THAT MATHS 127
Material is very interesting and Laura is very sweet but if youre taking a lot of hard, heavy-load classes, wait till you have a lighter load before taking her class. There is a lot of work and she expects a lot of detail in her exams. The problem sets really push you, which isn't bad but alot of info provided isn't clear. You WILL need outsidehelp
Really enjoyed the subject matter, but the way she taught it was poor, and her lecture videos are appalling.
I'm typically not a hater, but she really changed that.
If you have ADHD, avoid Laura Francis like the plague. Absolutely insane amount of work and procrastinating will dig you into a hole you won't be able to climb out of. She is so incredibly nice but holy sh*t. I'm getting B+s to As in all other courses this semester but fighting for my life to hopefully, maybe get a C in this course
Dr. Francis is passionate about the material, but often disorganized and overcomplicates topics during her lectures. Be prepared to watch 1-3 hours of lecture videos outside of class, do two quizzes and two discussion posts, and a 4-6 page problem set due every Sunday. Exams are open response and she takes a long time to grade them.
Laura was one of the sweetest professor I've had. She clearly cares about her students, and even though the exams are a big part of the grade, there's a lot of homework that can boost your grade up. However if you're already taking classes that require a lot of time, maybe take this class later because there's a lot of homework.
Doesn't grade anything. The tests are extremely long open responses that aren't worded clearly. Getting the right answer doesn't even matter because she's just going to take points off anyway. She clearly thinks she's incredibly smart but can't even answer students' questions. Basically, she's the worst. Run.
Laura has high expectations but makes EVERY effort to help her students succeed. Long problem sets? Full credit for practice; She walks through each Q in her weekly reviews. Hard essay exams? Cheat sheet (3 for final). 47% of points just from problem sets, attendance, discussion posts, quiz answers in topic notes/videos. Other 3 exams/9 assessments
So much work, including the 6-8 pg problem set- which are graded on two questions, and you dont know which ones. Had to watch old lecture videos and take notes before the week starts. Finals are supposed to be 2hrs, but hers is 4hrs in person (Registrar found out recently and she got upset, but no one told her to lie to them and make a 4hr exam).
SHE IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. SHE TEACHES YOU ALL THE BASIC SKILLS. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN, TAKE HER CLASS. YES YOU HAVE ALOT TO DO IN THE CLASS BUT GUESS WHAT? YOU GET A BETTER GRADE AT THE END BECAUSE YOU COULD FAIL ALL THREE EXAMS AND STILL END WITH A C+. I FAILED TWO EXAMS AND ENDED UP WITH A B BECAUSE I DID MY WEEKLY HOMEWORK.
I had Laura for the lab section. While friendly, no clear grading scale was ever given (no lab reports were graded until the end of the semester), and feedback would change based on the day. Communication with the TAs did not seem to be very good, and group work was done in assigned groups that you were never allowed to change.
Laura is an awesome and caring person. She gives clear and helpful feedback and does her best to be accessible and as helpful as she can to her students. I spent more time doing work for the lab than for the actual course component that goes with it. The lab reports were time-consuming and tiresome. You get placed in a group for the semester.
I took her for an Honors course 391AH, she was alright no clear grading criteria, the class was simple good amount of homework but as long as you do it you should be able to get a decent grade, she takes forever to grade though, have heard she is not the greatest in other classes, I personally wouldn't take her classes
My all time favorite professor, it's clear how much she cares ab the subject + her students. This class and content is difficult, but it's doable. The hw is excessive but it's directly helpful for exams if you spend time on it. Weekly lecture videos are a drag but 1000% worth your time. Tough class but amazing professor. Learned good study habits!
no matter how hard you try in this class she will grade you unfairly. she ignored emails asking for help and clarification on homework for me and other students. it seemed like she didnt even read the homework we passed in
Professor Laura Francis comes across as lazy and burnt out as she solely uses lecture videos (filmed during COVID) to teach course material. You are better off taking an online course because the level of teaching done inside class is minimal, and you essentially teach everything to yourself outside of class.
Took it over Winter. Lectures were clear, but often needed to do more research on my own to answer the problem sets. Problem sets take forever, but are worth it, they provide a solid way to get a full understanding of the material. Not at all hard, just requires some effort. She's available to answer questions and explain. Get out what you put in.
A lot of work for 1 credit class (weekly Perusall readings, attending 2 department lectures, 2 papers, leading 1 discussion, & presenting once). But, I submitted the 2 papers over a month late w/out asking for an extension and they were still graded for full credit. Only participated when I lead the discussion. Topics were rly intersting too!
So there's a bunch of hw, but I learned a ton from it. There were 3 non-cumulative exams & a final. You're allowed to have a full notes sheet (8x11 front & back) for the 3 exams and all 3 sheets for the final. The exams were still tough, but you aren't expected to memorize anything. Also attended, but didn't pay attenntion in lectures.
I loved Laura as a professor! She was engaging, helpful, and approachable both in and out of lectures, and provided more study material than any other professor I've had thus far! Bio 151 is a hard class, but she explains things extremely clearly, and posts resources to help students go through the more complicated topics covered. Laura is awesome!
Not good. Avoid. Online lectures: 0/10 In class lectures: 5.5-6/10 ProblemSets: 5/10 ---- no useful feedback, doesn't make it clear what shes looking for--- grading criteria sucks Exams: Good luck--- you can have 90% of the questions correct but if you don't elaborate to every atom, you'll get nickel and dimed for points and end up with a 70%
My problem is mostly rooted in the 4-5 weekly videos. These need to be updated. Too many times, she speeds over the crucial, complex ideas and makes it so I have to go do my own research about these pathways or mechanisms in order to complete the homework assignment. Everything to complete the problem set should be in those videos.
Laura has potential to be a great teacher, she is like-able and seems to care about her students but her explanations in the videos provided every week are terrible. They were fine in the beginning (easier topics) but I swear she confuses herself and loses me about a dozen times in each video. She goes too fast for her own good.
Laura has potential to be a great teacher, but her class will make you miserable. She makes you rely on her problem sets/lecture videos to teach yourself all the content. Her classes is just iClickers not teaching like at that point, why make it mandatory. War cry on her exams because she will say you over explained or didn't explain enough. Help.
Laura's class is not meant to be an introductory biology. The amount of work she gives and expects students to be on page is concerning. There is a new topic weekly, requiring you to watch pre-recorded lecture videos from covid, complete a pre-lecture quiz, a topic assessment quiz, a discussion post, and 10+ page problem set. Save yourself.
This class is not easy and requires lots of work, but it is well structured to make you learn the material. the weekly question sets are worth a large portion of your grade, but the TA's are very helpful if you need help answering them. you are also allowed an 8x11 note sheet for each exam and can use them on the final.
Out of all my classes, this one was my favorite this semester. There is definitely a lot of work, but everything is meant to help you learn and there is no busy work. The other 285 classes have less work, but are much more challenging. Cheat sheets are allowed on exams, and it really is difficult not to do well in this class if you do the work.
Please DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, unless it is for your major. This is the hardest "introductory" course I have ever been in. It requires you to know biology beforehand which is not what the class is supposed to be about. Take easier gen-eds than this or a better teacher. She gives so much homework each week and the quizzes are challenging.
Lots of work and long pre-lectures. Reverse-classroom style teaching which might not be preferred. However, she's very helpful and accessible during office hours and is genuinely caring and super funny.
Laura is very nice and very intelligent although she does not know how to teach her life. Her excuse is that she knows too much and doesn't know how to simple her class to an intro class and instead makes the class more of a 200-level course. The grad ta's are also not helpful, if anything the uTA's do a better job at explaining.
This was my second time taking 151 and my experience with Laura was a major step up. She's a nice person and easy to listen to, making for a relaxed class environment. There is a LOT of homework, but I've taken the class before and that's pretty typical in 151.
Professor Francis's class is not meant to be an introductory bio class. Every week there is a weekly 10-12 page problem set per topic, pre-lecture quiz to a set of videos, topic assessment quiz&discussion post. Lectures are i-Clicker questions that review the material you learned from the pre-lecture videos. Exams are all open response.
Laura is sweet as a person, but the work overload is too much!! The TAs aren't help at all when you want to discuss about work that you've missed and Laura never responds to emails or if she does its far too late from when I actually needed her. Problem sets are 10 long draining pages of work.
Reuses the same pre-recorded lectures and wants you to watch them outside of class and just do iClicker in lecture. Teaches the class like an advanced biology course and uses most of the content from her higher level bio class on exams and problem sets. She is a nice lady but the workload and expectations are a lot.
Laura Francis has the potential to be a great professor. The exams contain a lot of writing so be prepared. Homework consists of lengthy problems sets that if saved until Sunday then your Sunday will be gone. If you don't have to take this class then don't take it.
If you want to take a 200 level bio course that is falsely advertised as "introductory to biology" then this is your sign to register for laura francis' class. Way too much work assigned weekly, even the TA's can attest to the rigor of the course. 10+ page problem set, exams are all open response, you can picture what the rest is like.
Amazing professor. Make the effort to attend office hours and put in the work. The value in the class is not the material learned as much as how to learn and study. She will most likely change how you view learning, super approachable, has a true idea of education. You can talk to her about anything related to academics/career/goals and even life.
391AH is a one-credit course. Laura is a great person and the discussions were great in the course. There is a weekly scientific paper and reflection required before each discussion and every student will pick a disease to lead the discussion on once in the course. Along with presenting a disease at the end of the course.
Professor Francis is an amazing teacher. She prepares her lectures very well and consider a lot of different aspects of effective learning into her teaching. Highly recommend edit to those who have a passion for biology. A lot of effort is needed for this class, though, its totally worth-it with the skills and knowledge you will get from doing so.
Review for Bio586. Lot's of reading and writing!!!! The exams are all open response questions. The guided reading homework and exams are force! Literally stressing about finishing the assignments. Recorded presentation, a disease mechanism paper, all open response material is ridiculous. Plus, this is a summer course so everything is condensed.
I really love that she wants you to know the ins and outs of the material and through open response, you will be able to do this. The resources can be vague and unclear, the lecture videos are boring and unclear. The grading is oftentimes unreasonable and the class is not user friendly overall.
seems like the professor wants to be the "tough" professor that gives a lot of work, problem is, like most professors, she just doesnt teach it well.
Very nice lady. Has potential but hasnt quite fine-tuned her method of teaching, that, in theory, works but she really drops the ball with making her lectures watchable. Shes needs to work on the resources she provides and needs to stop taking points off for petty things. Seems like a great, caring person though.
the TAs don't even know whats going on.... you ask them a question, they give you the wrong answer 25% of the time. Wouldn't be a huge problem, but sometimes you use what they told you on graded assignments and you get screwed.
Laura Francis serves no purpose in the class. Our lectures consist of maybe 4 iClicker questions that she poorly explains for 50 minutes, we are expected to learn everything through 3-year-old pre-recorded lectures, weekly overly long problem sets of which 2 questions are graded, etc. She is the epitome of a professor who is just here for research.
Worst class ever. Grades your notes. Exams are fully short answers and usually take more than 2 hours to write.
tests are brutal, homework is wayyy too much do not take
The class is fine but the workload is intense. Weekly you have lectures to watch outside of class, 10-13 page packet (all short answer), a quiz, and a discussion forum post. In class, all that is done really is clicker questions. Also, the videos that are posted online have ads so she is making adsense off of us using 3 year old Covid-19 lectures.
The thing about Laura is you HAVE to go to review sessions. I hated her until I talked to her and while the workload is astronomical, her online lectures are good enough to carry the class.
DO NOT TAKE 391AH WITH LAURA! She assigns multiple 12 page scientific papers every week on perusall and THEN makes you write a 2 page reflection on. You also have to go to 2 seminars and write a reflection on those and present/lead discussion twice during class! She is lazy, inaccessible, and assigns way to much work for a 1 credit class.
Do not take this professor under any circumstances. Take Caleb. Or be homeschooled. But not this professor. She took me through hell. I had a 4.0 GPA, but thanks to her, my GPA is ruined.
The final took 5 HOURS! other exams take 3 hours. 2 hours of pre-lecture videos that are super old w/ads + 12-pages long problem set (short answer only)! + 1hr quiz due every sunday + discussion posts... as much as she might seem like she cares, it is not reflected on her grading. Her lecture are practically USELESS. goes on rants for most of class
This class is hard and Laura's teaching format doesn't help. The other posts will tell you the demanding workload. At least you get points for everything you do, so it can cushion bad exam grades a tiny bit (which are problem-solving short answer). Her lectures are useless. She doesn't cover all the week's content in class. Find a friend.
This is the definition of a weed out class. You need to be on point with your intro bio content to succeed, as this isn't (and never was) an intro class. 100s are intro classes. Biochem285 is your other option.. with harder content and a slightly "easier prof." Pick your poison, but if you plan to be a bio major buckle up lol.
Took her back in Fall 22, and didn't post a review until now because of how many brain cells I lost and how traumatic the experience was. The workload was beyond comprehensible. Class made me diagnosed with long-term erectile dysfunction. Had multiple brain aneurysms. Will probably have Parkinson's or Alzheimer's or maybe both when I'm 25. Amen
Class time was wasted on dumb I-clicker questions that were multiple choice even though she "doesn't believe in multiple choice." The clicker questions were a waste of time because tests are all open response. Graded on notes from her 3 year old lecture videos. Workload is a lot with notes, discussion posts, and a 10-page problem set every week.
If this class is a major requirement, TRY & AVOID TAKING IT WITH OTHER HARD SCIENCES LIKE ORGO/PHYSICS/PHYSIOLOGY/ETC! I cannot stress that enough. Making this class my main focus allowed me to take the time necessary to do well. It is A LOT of work, but it is completely doable especially if you form a study group and keep each other accountable.
Genuinely so stressful I had to withdraw. Don't do this to yourself. Know who you are, know that you can't do this. Be serious. Laura will make you regret being born. Insane expectations for a 3 credit course. Maybe if it was 6 credits it would make sense. The "flipped classroom" concept only makes it easier for her, not you.
Took this class in the winter. She's a very tough grader. Each topic has a problem set that ranges from 11-16 pages of a Word document that might take a while to complete. Uses lecture videos that are old, and the method of teaching is ineffective and unstructured. She doesn't teach well but will grade assignments harshly. No extra credit.
Laura gives a lot of work in her classes and much prefers open response rather than multiple choice, which really worked for me, since you can receive partial credit. As long as you understand the general concept and can explain it, Laura can help you fill in the finer details. She's really approachable and happy to help people understand.
She is a great teacher. The problem is how much work she assigns. I lost my well paying job to focus on her class because her exams will give you nightmares. I still get PTSD when I see her classes, I stay away honestly. If you take her, you will learn a lot but be ready to READ LIKE YOU ARE IN MED SCH OR STH
The class was the hardest class I have taken thus far at UMass. The weekly amount of homework was insane I did not sleep Sunday nights trying to finish my problem set. The exams are all open response and its so hard to prepare because there is so much material. I would recommend taking it with friends to get through this class.
Reverse classroom structure was not beneficial for me at all. My issue was really the fact that she waits until exams to release answers to problem sets that are extremely long so you really do not have adequete time to go over your work. Also there is really no way to check whether your answers are right or wrong yet they are graded on accuracy.
The exams are very tough and they are all open response. She gives you a sheet of diagrams but they do nothing to help you. The exams are only worth 18% of your grade. Most of the points come from the problem sets. DO THE PROBLEM SETS! Also, they give no feedback as to why you got an answer wrong. They wrote "look at the answer key".
She assigns extremely time-consuming open response homework every week. The answer keys were provided very late so that I would not have enough time to process what I got wrong and what answers she is looking for. The tests had open response questions as well. It was an awful experience and I'm required to retake the class due to my low grade.
Laura is super sweet, understanding, and does a good job of teaching! The online lectures can feel long at times but just put them on 1.5-2x speed! I liked the online lectures because it gave me time to truly understand the content and not feel rushed for notes in class because its a ton of info to take down.
Laura is sweet and very cool but the setup of the class is grotesque. I understand what she's trying to do and I like challenging and in-depth assignments but the key issue is, she doesn't really back-up what shes looking for in her lectures/notes(she thinks she does and thats the problem)Would be an awesome class if she made some adjustments
This is a really difficult class because of the heavy workload and difficult exams. Laura teaches in a reverse classroom style, which wasn't effective for me. The exams are all open response and can take up to 3hrs. The final can take up to 5hrs (scheduled for 2). There are a lot of small assignments to make up for how harshly exams are graded
she does this flipped classroom thing that does not work for anyone. there is so much homework every week: 15 page problem sets, quiz, discussion and lecture notes. her lectures are useless and she just repeats the slides. she is really good at answering emails. her exams are like the problem sets, they are hard and she tells you to know everything
I was extremley intimidated by this rate my professor forum before taking this course, It was very difficult but if you put a good chunk of effort in, you'll do fine. Problem sets were tedious but they are meant to make you think, I would focus on the problem sets when studying as she usually reuses questions from them in exams also a nice person.
The problem sets can be a little intense, but you can definitely flop a few things and still get an A (case in point: me).
Tough class, but manageable with the right approach. Lots of open-response assignments and exams, so prepare to dedicate significant time. Using unstuckstudy ai and forming a study group helped me stay on top of the workload.
Laura's class is tough, I don't pretend it isn't. But it's honestly worth it if you're trying to learn biology, because biology really is that hard, and Laura does her absolute best to make sure that you don't get swept away by the current. Put in the time and effort and you will reap the rewards. That's why I chose her as my thesis advisor.
She has a "flipped classroom" style of teaching, so you have to teach yourself the material and end up doing nothing during lectures besides occasional presentations and homework. Weekly quizzes, 3 exams. She's also very VERY picky with grading, so don't expect any 100s on assessments. Good person to talk to, but not the best professor.
Super challenging course, but I enjoyed the teaching style/material and retained more information from this class than anything else at UMass. The final was ridiculously long and should've been shortened, was definitely a little unfair. Be ready to put in the work, but know that if you do it will be rewarded.
I do not recommend this class. The assignments are overly lengthy and require way too much work, while the material is confusing and hard to grasp. The workload is overwhelming, and it feels like too much to handle. Look for alternatives that offer clearer content and a more reasonable workload.
Great person but this class forced me to learn a lot due to the amount of work assigned. I would say only take any of her classes if you have the time, and you are passionate because she'll give you the same passion back. Her final was way too long though.
I love Laura Francis. This class will probably make you feel like you've been killed and reborn by the end of it and it's so much work it's basically a part-time job, but it will prepare you SO well for upper level cellular bio courses. I learned more in this class than in any other class I've ever taken. DONT TAKE ON TOP OF OTHER HARD CLASSES.
just a lot of video watching because it is a flipped classroom. lots of problem sets, but I found them helpful to learn subjects. extra credit point available every week in an easy discussion. lots of availability to gets more points. final was hardest exam out of the three. nice professor, I think just a lot of work involved.
I love Laura Francis, she is very demanding in terms of the workload, but you walk away knowing the content better than other courses. I feel like I learned a ton in this class, and her lectures are interesting.
Do not take this class with Dr. Francis if you value your sanity. You will spend hours and hours doing busy work only to get graded harshly and points taken off for the littlest things, leading you to fail the assignment you spent hours on. Tests are extremely long. Puts things on the test that were never taught in lectures. Don't take this class.
Hardest class I have taken, AVOID THIS CLASS! Very long and complex problem sets along with challenging weekly quizzes and pre-lectures to take notes on. Exams are all open response. Spent all my time on this class. If you are taking this class I wish you the best of luck.
Laura is very sweet and wants her students to learn. This class will take most of your time since problem sets are long. Grading is clear and pathway copies are given in exams. Exams are based on conceptual understanding so make sure to watch recorded videos before the class, and come prepared. You should be fine if you follow the syllabus.
Honestly such a good professor, lots of work but in the end it just makes you do better on the exams. Lectures are good and she's super nice and accommodating. As long as you do the problem sets and notes you'll get a good grade.
As someone who is taking this class just to cover a Gen Ed, I struggled a lot. Most of the time she seems to assume we have all taken AP Bio in High School and if you haven't it gets really confusing. The class is structured weirdly where we have to watch video lectures and take notes and then go to class where she gives the same lectures.
If you are a biology major or plan to go to med school or anything related absolutely take this class. It requires full attention but you will learn more from Laura than you will in any other class. If you are taking this as a non bio major, don't. Watch the video lectures - make sure you understand them, take great notes, do the problem sets.
I honestly learned in this class which I appreciated. However, the professor actually expects so much out of you. She does absolutely way too much for an intro class. The topic notes that you have to submit every Wednesday she just goes over them in class so there's no point. The lectures were just so unhelpful, but go to discussion, it helps.
Would only take this class if you are a Bio/Biochem major. You'll get a lot out of this class if you plan on continuing in bio, but if not then don't take it. Class is hard but you'll get a good grade if you do the work, exams are only like 30% of the grade so doing the other assignments can get you a good grade even with ok exam scores.
Witty professor. Nice class because it was more participation and work ethic based rather than tests. I'd recommend taking with the other professor. All quizzes and exams were open response. Be prepared to watch 1+ hours worth of videos before class. TAs were your best help. Hard class, but interesting content.
285 with Laura kind of felt like being punched in the stomach over and over again. Despite that I ended up liking her by the end of the course. I feel like I learned a lot + got way more serious about studying. Exams are entirely open response and graded pretty harshly but due to weighting you can mess up on an exam and still get an A.
so bad bro she makes you turn in hella notes and doesn't even teach what u need to know in class, so u need to watch the video lectures as we'll. Her tests are open response too and take forever. and she an A is a 95% or above in her class.
This class was simple but felt like a lot for a 1 credit course. We had readings and had to write a reflection paper for each. The reading you were assigned, you do a presentation on. We had a group project presentation as well. We also had to go to 2 seminars and write a reflection on them too. You also have to annotate the readings on Persuall.
Took this as a gen-ed; one of my favorite classes I have taken! Large volume of work, but I found that there was very little studying needed outside of the provided assignments. There is also lots of opportunity for extra credit and many assignments dropped. Professor Francis is super accessible outside of class and really cares about her students!
Very difficult course, took up most of my time. Hard to adjust to at first because of the amount of homework and studying, but you learn to manage it. If you put in the effort, you will do well, it's just a lot of effort. But Laura is very understanding and kind. Great professor, just the material is tough. Also very hard tests (kind grader tho).
terrible. goes too fast, teaches in a disorganized way, unhelpful outside (or inside) of class. her class is ridiculous for an intro biology class and she does not care. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I don't think she deserves the hate she is receiving. She is an incredible teacher and honestly made me switch my major to biology. I really enjoyed working with her, she always was willing to help outside of class. The class was very hard, but you could always schedule a zoom with her, around your schedule, which most teacher don't do. I love her.
Hardest umass course I have ever taken. All of my time and sweat I put into this class barely paid off. Do not recommend.
Laura has you learn from pre-recorded lecture videos that she assigns on a weekly basis which are great because nothing outside the vids are on the test. Lectures are basically all review sessions. The expectation that you watched the videos is annoying but if you just do it, lectures reinforce the content really well and guarantee good test grades
She tells her students at the end of the semester to rate her well because of how many bad ratings she has. She gave pop quizzes, if you gave to much info on hw you would get marked poorly as well as if you gave too little info, nothing in lecture are on exams but you have to show up, you have to teach yourself. Do not take her, take the class @BCC
does dr. laura francis want to teach? signs point to no.
Her materials are outdated. You watch 4 lecture videos (30 minutes long each and were recorded during COVID) every week with a 20 page problem set. Her directions are outdated and very unclear.
I took this class in Fall '24 and Laura is genuinely the best professor I've had thus far. The problem sets take some time, but it really helps you learn the content. I truly felt like I was able to master the material. Best use of a "flipped classroom" style I've ever seen. Lecture videos are good, class time is well spent. Laura is the goat fr
Absolute Worst and if you are a visual learner she is NOT for you. Acts like she is better than other professors in the department but she is by far so much worse. Take 285 with Rounds and save yourself the struggle
TAKE CALEB ROUNDS SHE SUCKS
Good class if you're going into a bio-adjacent field (and not just taking it as a req.). Laura gives more work than other Bio151 professors, but she'll make you understand biology, and it will help you later. If you want a prof who will answer in-depth questions, push you, and support your goals, it is Laura! Just prepare for long problem sets.
If you want your GPA to get messed up take with her, if not TAKE CALEB ROUNDS. This class ruined my gpa. Super exam heavy, super long weekly problem sets that take 12 hours to complete and are WEEKLY. They are also graded harshly as well as with exams. Exam is only open response and hard. You are also expected to watch 1 hour+ videos before class.
I would not wish this professor on my worst enemy. SHE DOES NOT TEACH. Hours of videos to watch that are from covid when she needed to make them (LAZY!!) that have ads on them, wasting time and she's profiting. Exams are graded HARSHLY all open response. Weekly assignments take10 hours. The class is not that bad if you take literally any other prof
testasdsadssdad
"flipped classroom" structure that consists of watching outdated lectures as homework and listening to laura yap in class. weekly problem sets are long but very helpful. tests and quizzes aren't bad either. don't let laura's reviews scare you from doing biotap! the class honestly isn't that bad, there's just a lot of work.
Yes, the class is a lot of work, but it gives you a deeper understanding of the course material. Do the notes and problem sets, pay attention to clicker questions, and ask questions during office hours. Very kind, caring, and knowledgeable professor if you put in the effort. Loved this class, if you are serious about biology, take Laura
*391AH* - very chill professor, all you really need to do is read research papers, write a 3 pager, make comments in perusall, a make a few presentations. Everything in this class is participation based not effort, but you will get more out of it if you put effort into it. She loves when you make an effort to participate in weekly discussions.
She might as well be the devil. Lot of work in this class like problem sets (10+ pages), handwritten notes. Every week there is a quizzz. The grading system is messed up ( got 95+ in both midterm but needed a 100 in the final to get an A). Your overall grade should be 95+ to get an A. Flipped classroom system so good luck ;)
