She's cool and she's young. She might come off as hard at first but is really cool and willing to help if you have any questions. She's really into revising your papers. She lets your re-write your paper after if you don't like the grade she gave you.
really nice person, and also a pretty helpful teacher...so far at least...
Really hard to get an A unless you're very very good and writing before taking this course. Easy B, You can up your grade by rewriting it usually up one part of a grade (from a B to a B+). Pretty liberal, some good movies along with course, strange but good. Theme is varied and gets redundant and boring the more you write about the same damn topic
I liked this class. You do have to write a fair amount of papers but they usually are 2 pages and there is only 1 research paper. The class discussions are interesting and shes a cool person. Take her for the college writing class!
i was so scared of this class once i realized we had to write our own poetry. i thought i hated poetry. but she completely opened my eyes, and i love the class so much now. one of my favorites ever. shes so helpful and encouraging. not that much work, just one page responses and 2 collections of your own work, and its a writing intensive.
This class compared to other uwcr classes is really easy. We had to write two papers of about five pages each which she gave us plent yof time to do. The papers were what we wanted them to be about from the discussion. Then we had a final research paper of 8 pages for the final which she gave us two months to do. Overall great
In her UCWR class you will watch very interesting documentaries pertaining to consumer behavior, Haitian culture and the construction of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Outside of the class, she is one of the nicest people to sit down and have a conversation with. She will even let you watch Family Guy! If you aren't satisfied with a grade, redo it.
this was a great class & she is a great teacher. ur grade is mostly based on your participation so if you show up to class, say something that will get her to write on the bore you'll be fine. just dont mess up on the midterm or final. two large essays which should be farely easy if you have paid attention enough.
Awesome teacher! Interesting class, really good movies and books. Cool as a teacher, even cooler as a person, the kind of person i'd want to be friends with. Is really willing to help if you ask her, not intimidating. You can redo any paper whose grade you weren't happy with to achieve a better grade. Awesome class
Her assignments were very unclear and she kept changing the assignments. In all honesty she is a nice person but is not a very good teacher. She expects a lot from her students considering this is their first year of college. Grade: papers 70% participation 30%, 4 papers 1st 10%, 2nd 20%, 3rd 30%, final 40%. I would suggest trying a different prof
I agree with the comment below. She's nice but not a teacher. This was an Intro to Drama class and the material was way too complex. I'm not an English major and I was lost the whole time. Participation is 30% but only calls on her favorites. Midterm was a 3 page paper (single space) and she only handed out one A. I would avoid this class.
I loved this class. I took her for Intro to Poetry as well, and she's always been helpful. She shows extremely interesting readings and movies. Class participation is a big part of her class, but her conversations will make you want to talk. I highly recommend.
I came into this class with terrible writing skills and no enthusiasm. I left it feeling like a MUCH better writer. Sometimes those hour and 15 min classes seem really long but her class flew by! She's an awesome person too! She's really intelligent and can offer a lot of insight but also really down to earth. RECOMMEND!
She's super nice and allows multiple rewrites (all while working with you to fix your paper). Only 3 papers, not much more homework. Interesting topics on media. :]
HORRIBLE! one of the hardest and pointless classes i've taken here at loyola. very tough grader, not sure she even handed out one A. very unclear and disorganized, always changing assignments last minute. her other classes may be okay but STAY AWAY from women in lit. unless of course you want to really hurt your GPA.
Professor Goldstein is AMAZING. She really knows the material and is a writer herself. She brings in a lot of outside materials such as movies, artwork, and other essays. It can be a hard class if you don't keep up with the reading, but she's a great teacher.
I absolutely love Professor Goldstein! This is not a blow off class, read the material and come to class prepared and you'll do great. I personally feel that professor Goldstein is very intelligent and she challenges her students to think outside their comfort zone. She's down to earth and if you need help, she's very helpful! Highly recommend her!
Goldstein is my FAVE!! Such an exceptional teacher. If writing isn't your thing then her class will definitely help you. She's very approachable and willing to help. Super super nice and charismatic! Leads discussions really well and aims to give students a different perspective on things. Organized and thought our course.Best ever-TAKE THIS CLASS!
She's a good teacher but a little fickle. Her grading is very arbitrary. For me, she liked some of my writing but not other bits, even though I think I'm relatively consistant. It's important, if you want to get an A, to talk to her and go in for office hours. Then you'll know how she feels about your writing.
A tough grader but if you make your writing a craft and think deeply about the prompts, she sees that and rewards you with a high grade. Makes her liberal political views known but doesn't impose them on her students. Very willing to give a deadline extension if you ask. One of the nicest, most understanding professors one could ask for!
Professor Goldstein is my favorite teacher at Loyola. She is beyond helpful and I genuinely enjoyed attending her class. Not only will your writing improve, but you will learn life skills and information about current events from her. 4 papers, including a final research paper that you prepare for about a month. AMAZING TEACHER!
AMAZING Professor. Every class consists of really chill discussions that are genuinely interesting. Even if you are not one to speak in class, you will. 3 short assignments ranging from 1-2 pages each including and a Final in that same range. Best professor I've had at Loyola. You will not regret taking this class and your writing will improve.
I took Professor Goldstein for the poetry writing workshop and if you actually care about really testing and developing your skills as a poet there is no better teacher you could have. She is the sweetest lady too!
Professor Goldstein is the bomb. She is incredibly helpful and it's easy to tell she wants her students to succeed. She will help you improve your writing. Class discussions are fascinating and current-- it's easy to pay attention and participate. I highly recommend her! You will not regret it!
Professor Goldstein is a good professor but she is a somewhat tough grader. She also is a little confusing when she describes what she wants to see in papers. I think I got worse at writing thesis statements during the course of her class. Otherwise she is a nice person and a good teacher.
She is very nice and helpful. I really think my writing has improved from her class. She can be a bit unclear about what she expects, but she is very friendly and willing to help. I really like that I improved from her class opposed to other people who just saw UCWR as a waste of time
The types of papers you right lead into one another so you can understand the process of how to put them all together. There's one big research paper at the end, but she dedicates class to helping you navigate through it. Tough grader but always willing to help.
she's really nice and really listens to your opinion in class. Has 3 papers for the semester and a lot of readings on sakai or in some other books. Overall she's a good UCLR teacher to take and doesn't grade harsh
Professor Goldstein was the absolute BEST professor. I Attended every class and I got an easy A, The class covers important social issues such as Gender, and Race, and Knowledge
I freaking love professor Goldstein. I expected UCWR just to be a class on the rules of writing (when to use commas, working on thesis statements, etc.) but she made it so much more. She got the class to actually think about important and relevant topics that are happening in the world around us. She encouraged people to form their own opinions and
Professor Goldstein is the best! She's incredibly helpful and is very accommodating to the needs of her students. Her lectures are very interesting, and if you participate often, she will love you! Don't be afraid to ask questions or meet with her outside of class. She genuinely cares for her students and is very passionate about teaching.
Really great teacher and very understanding. She is very smart and very personable. Her class discussions are what makes everything easy to understand. She is very aware of the issues in society and she doesn't sugarcoat the problems we face in our lives such as inequality and racism. She is very helpful and gives us a great amount of time to write
Laura Goldstein is a really great teacher if you are a student that has at least some skill in writing. She likes you to express yourself like any other writing teacher. She has you write rough drafts that are not graded that help in the writing process and she is an easy grader. You should have no trouble getting an A in this class. She is great.
Goldstein is a very tough grader. Have never gotten lower than A's on papers in the past and got B's on all of them because she's just too picky. Only grades are 4 papers and participation so if you don't do well on every paper and show up to every class ur screwed. If ur looking for a blow off UCWR class this is not the one to take.
Easy if you are already good at writing. Takes forever to return papers.
Class is molded around current issues and builds on itself so be sure not to trash any of your previous readings. Goldstein is beyond helpful and will have lecture time dedicated to writing workshops. She is very difficult, but she is only trying to help you to improve your writing. She's like that cool aunt everyone wishes they had.
Laura is amazing!!! By far the best class I have taken at Loyola. She really cares about the wellbeing of her students. This was a poetry class and I thought it would be all old poets but it was modern day poets and the readings were all awesome. Plus the final project you get to write your own poetry book. take her!!! you wont regret it!!
Great class
Professor Goldstein is by far the best thing to have happened to my writing. I recommend taking her for both UCWR & UCLR if possible. Her course is diverse and focuses mainly on current issues. She drew from many different sources to pull this theme together. 3 papers and a participation grade so take the time to prepare the papers.
Laura Goldstein is one of the most informed, caring, and passionate professors Ive ever met. Her connections with the past and current events gets everyone involved. She has 3 short papers and 1 final essay. This might seem intimidating, but they were very interesting to write and she gives lots of resources and extensions. Love her!
This was the best class I've taken at Loyola and the most caring professor I've seen. Professor Goldstein made this class extremely enjoyable, even if poetry isn't your thing. I've heard art core can be a lot of work but this class was minimal work and I actually enjoyed going to class and wanted to try my best. Definitely take this class!
Love her. Three papers (short response, midterm, final). Picked interesting books to read. PARTICIPATION MATTERS. She knows we're all students and will work with you if you need an extension. She has high expectations but they're not terrible to meet. Recommend for UCLR.
If you want the easiest A of your life, take her. Honestly as long as you write about what she wants to hear, she'll make you feel like the greatest writer of the 21st century. However, she loves to hear herself talk as well others who share the exact same opinion as her. I could barely stand the class "discussion" by the end of the semester.
Great teacher, participation was 25% of grade. Don't buy the books, just use someone elses as you only use them < 10 times during semester and its all outside class. Lets you resubmit papers and gives extensions on assignments. While the course content is so boring, if you're good at english you can get a high grade.
Overall an outstanding Professor, the subject she teaches suits her perfectly she gives amazing feedback. Great discussions in class. Only thing is the feedback is completely blunt but it does help improve as a writer.
She is so sweet! Only like 3 papers, no quizzes or tests, discussions are interesting!
She's a really great professor -- her class is fairly easy even if you put in minimal effort. 3 papers, and the books you can find online.
Absolutely love Professor Goldstein. I've learned so much from her class and my writing has definitely improved. We get to write and discuss current events and social justice which is super cool. She gives good feedback and has office hours which I definitely would take advantage of since she gives great feedback. Definitely would take again!
I would not recommend Professor Goldstein. They do not explain assignments very clearly and are often passive aggressive when asked for clarification or guidance. Most classes are discussions or writing workshops, and there are 3 papers (an analysis, a synthesis, and a final research paper). Textbooks aren't necessary, you barely use them.
Laura is never clear on their expectations and does not clarify when you ask. They like to hear their own opinions and as long as you write what they want to hear you'll do fine.
Her grading style may work for others, but it doesn't work for me. She doesn't give an actual numerical value when grading, which personally does not work for me at all. She gives good comments on the papers, but she focuses more on the reading material than actual writing skills. I liked the reading material she picked.
Professor Goldstein is one of the best teachers on Loyola's Campus. I took her my freshman and junior year because she is an easy teacher, very understanding, helps her students develop better writing skills, and does not give homework, tests, or quizzes. Only 3-4 papers per semester. TAKE HER
Professor Goldstein is really nice and helpful. I can tell she really likes to hear herself talk, sometimes we get so off topic I don't even know what the class is about. Sometimes she's a bit unorganized. She doesn't use Sakai or Locus so I have no idea what my grade is. She's very nice and gives good feedback however.
LOVE this woman. She is so sweet and really cares about her students. Supportive and respectful. Lots of reading and class discussions on the readings. Not hard at all. Very passionate about what she teaches. Movies every Friday. Attendance is not ABSOLUTELY necessary but participation is an easy way to do well in this class. 3-4 essays.
She was an incredible professor I loved her a lot. She was super accommodating and helpful if you were ever in need of extensions. You write 3 graded essays throughout the term, including the final. The textbook is mandatory but we only use it twice and it is expensive, I would say you are okay without it.
she is the absolute sweetest! a really personable lady who understands that students have other things going on in their lives. the literature you read is so interesting (and not too long!). class discussions on zoom on Mondays to talk about the reading for the week, forum posts on Wednesday, and breakout rooms in zoom on Friday. such a good core
She loves to hear herself talk. She doesn't facilitate student participation because she talks over everyone and sort of just dominates the convo with what she wants to say. The readings were interesting. She is a really tough grader on papers but is really nice about needing extensions/giving feedback. Manageable workload, the forum posts were fun
Okay, so she's pretty "ok" in my books. A solid professor who cares about her students. The grading rubrics are a little confusing especially online BUT, I was able to turn around my C to an A with one paper. So, if you like writing and like a very chatty teacher go for her.
Class is easy, if you don't want to speak over zoom just make sure to complete forum posts. She's super understanding and is willing to give extensions and other assignments to make up meetings missed. Not a difficult class, show up, do the posts, and do the readings (not a lot), and you will pass. I've had her twice and would take her again.
My favorite professor so far. She's a little bit disorganized but she's super flexible and really willing to work with you. Super interesting. Try to engage
She is an amazing teacher and actually made literature interesting. She also incorporates modern books, poems, and movies which makes the class a lot more fun than reading the classics or harder texts. The class is graded by weekly forums. Two days of the week we come to class. One day is lecture and another is group discussions which is fun.
She picked super interesting readings and wrote forum post questions that really get you thinking. Prof Goldstein is charismatic and you can feel that she values student opinions during discussions. She had a peer-written final (everyone composed one question and responded to three others) and it was a lot of fun. Very enjoyable class!!!
Mx. Goldstein is an incredible teacher that truly cares about what they do. They make sure every reading is accessible and the readings are genuinely interesting. I really enjoyed this class and would definitely take it again.
Good professor that relates to their students. You have to do 3 papers, the final research paper is worth 40% but they will give you plenty of time to complete it. They are a pretty tough grader, however they give back really good feedback.
Professor Goldstein is the easiest English professor I have ever taken. You don't need to attend class, you read good books, and don't have any essays just some forums posts which are really doable. Sometimes class gets a little off-topic, but she loves listening to everyone's ideas and opinions. She cares about her students, and I WOULD TAKE HER!
Professor Goldstein is one of my favorite professors so far. I'd definitely recommend them to anyone taking this course. They are super caring and truly care about your education. They also really helped improve my writing over the course of the semester, which I'm really grateful for.
Mx. Goldstein was the best professor I have had thus far. Their kindness and caring nature is unmatched, and I would 100% take a course with them again if given the chance to do so. You do have to read for class most of the time, however, the readings are so relatable and very eye-opening. TAKE THEIR CLASS IF YOU CAN!!!
Mx. Goldstein is great! They truly care about their students and I learned so much in their class! The readings we read, as well as class discussions were always so interesting. I highly recommend Mx. Goldstein for UCLR!
It's a writing-intensive class and if you don't like to write, you won't like the class, but you'll like Prof Goldstein. They are such a sweet and caring professor! They were super flexible when a personal event came up and very understanding that life happens. They also give good essay feedback and want everyone to be the best writer they can.
I loved Prof. Goldstein's class so much! They are so good at sparking class conversation! So this class is one of those that I loved being able to participate in! They done just talk at you all class which is an awesome change of pace compared to some of the other classes here! Their feedback was always helpful! Highly recommend!!
Wonderful professor. Truly cares about their students' success and supports them outside of the classroom. Does not believe in tests or papers; easy A. Definitely take them.
SUCH AN AMAZING PROFESSOR. they had the best class ever made sure that our lecture and books were fun and relatable. our class discussions were always amazing because we all cared about the topics at hand. they are super understanding always cares about what you have to say and how you are feeling.
I have taken Laura twice during my time at Loyola and adore them. They genuinely care about their students and it shows. No rigid deadlines, no mandatory attendance, and creativity is encouraged. The only thing I'd say is that they can be disorganized when it comes to the syllabus, and grades aren't posted on Sakai until the end of the semester.
This was my first time taking Goldstein and it has so far been my favorite english class. They open up discussion which is a nice way to explore new topics. I look forward to this class and the papers are not too stressful. They're super accommodating to any of your needs and the readings assigned are fun to read! Take them!
Mx. Goldstein is an amazing prof. They really foster a comfortable and collaborative environment. The material that they picked for the course was eye opening, and no matter what background you are from you can relate to the messages of the material or the conversations that came after. Love, Love,LOVE their class.
Their class is incredible. If you are having a hard time with other courses and you want to feel supported and valued, take their class. Absolutely amazing professor!
WANT ANY EASY A FOR UCLR, LOOK NO FURTHER! They realize UCLR is not your top priority, and the class is more than manageable. The month before finals, we had two assignments: one discussion board and the final. We never wrote any formal papers, mostly discussion boards, ~once a week. The class is very liberal-leaning.
Loved my experience in their class! Readings were diverse, interesting, and challenging in the way they weren't like other texts I've read before. They prioritize discussions which i found very interesting, but is always sure to limit the amount of work assigned. Super light work load, and you will get so much out! Would recommend them to anyone :)
They're a really good person and will always put the students first. There aren't many assignments for your grade, except for discussion questions that you have to post almost every week. All you have to do is make a detailed post with evidence to get credit. Their lectures are easy-going and she is understanding.
Goldstein is phenomenal. They do an amazing job creating a warm learning environment that lends itself to many different learning styles. Participation is encouraged but not required as they recognize being a listener is a conversation skill and not everyone feels comfortable speaking. Very light workload, I look forward to taking them again.
I cannot explain how much I love Laura. Hands down the best professor at Loyola! I highly recommend taking their poetry workshop! Such a sweet and caring person, they are very understanding and give amazing feedback on your work. I would 100% take their class again if I could. love love love.
Prof. Goldstein is incredibly kind and accommodating. Engages in chill conversation w students before and after class. They really show they care about you. SUPER interesting course content. They're extremely open to whatever conversation and/or topics you bring to class. Encourages discussion among students and fosters safe space in class.
They are the best, this was my second class with them, and I plan to take more. Their classes are eye openers as well as help you to grow as an individual academically and personally. If you take them, you will get an amazing experience at Loyola which rare professors offer. They are caring & will make everything in their power to see you succeed.
Genuinely the best prof I have taken. They're a senior lecturer so they don't follow the curriculum and they do their own thing. Super caring and nice. They say attendance is mandatory but I never really went and still have a good grade. Only had to write 2 essays the whole semester, they give extensions if you just ask. Not old school and chill.
Really chill professor and kinda makes up their own curriculum, so not taught like a "normal" english course. I had them 2x a week & we would just talk as a class & small groups about the weekly texts. 1 DB a week + reply, and the only "essay" we had to write was the final which was one page.
I really liked Professor Goldstein. I will say I found myself bored a lot since the pace of the class was awfully slow as they make up their own curriculum. They also like to focus on one topic for the semester and I wasn't really interested in what we were talking about.
One of the greatest classes and professors at Loyola. Upfront and honest with students in the most caring way. They grade based on participation in the workshop. If you participate and don't blow this class off it'll be a fantastic experience for you. Extremely knowledgeable about all things poetry. I loved this class. Please taken Laura Goldstein!
Love them! Highly recommend Laura
Mx. Goldstein is a great professor, they are super caring, and interested in student feedback. They develop the class/ schedule around the students' pace/needs. They are a tough grader, but there are opportunities for revision. As long as you participate, you should be beyond okay. Lots of working/ talking with other people.
Yeah, I loved Laura as a professor, an easy intro course, and she's super liberal (if you care) and modern, with no tests, essays, or quizzes.. just weekly discussion posts. And she just wants to host classes like a conversation/discussion. Super easy just show up for her because she deserves it.
You barely have to try to do anything in class. Most days she just talks to the room all class. Very nice, chill grader.
Mostly discussion in class, only have 2 essays for the whole class. They really care about their students' well-being. I really recommend take them if you can!
i love the approach Laura took to teach this class. It was open and communicative and awkward and honest just how literature should be,wasn't filled with busy work or useless essays, it allowed me to openly discuss and interact with literature in a low stress environment and I think this was the best possible way for this course to be taught
They genuinely care about students and the literature they teach. Super friendly and nice. There are weekly discussion posts where you pick at least one of multiple questions to answer; write at least one paragraph. Respond to at least one other person if there wasn't a class meeting with question discussion groups (to help draft your post)
This class was honestly the best UCWR I could have ended up in. Two papers for the enter class but lots of opportunities for revision, discussion, and smaller assignments. This professor actually cares about their students and will work at your pace. As long as you can communicate your needs Mx. Goldstein will meet them! Highly recommend!
Such a good professor. Class content was actually interesting (coming from someone who doesn't like to read). Easy to contribute to class discussions regardless of your understanding on the readings (or if you did them at all). Super kind and understanding. Fun, easy course.
Easy to communicate with, always wants participation and discussion.
they are the chillest professor probably ever. very obviously cares about students and is also very obviously passionate about what they do. love!!
Very engaging class which is setup more as a discussion rather than a lecture. Professor Goldstein was great with giving feedback and communicating with students.
Such a fun class! Goldstein is obviously incredibly passionate about what they do, and that shows in their method of teaching. Super laid back, but still academically stimulating. Class is so enjoyable because it's not stressful, just fun and creative! Recommend especially for seniors needing to meet credits---maybe you'll discover a new hobby!
Lots of homework but you can read the summaries of a text and still be able to complete assignments. Very little that you're graded on academically, so participation and attendance matters more. But, if you email her before that you are missing class then she doesn't hold it against your grade!
This class was one of my favorites of the semester. They are really passionate about what they teach, and the subjects that the class discusses aren't strictly on whatever we are reading that week. Mostly lectures with class discussion questions. Very chill class.
