babe!
scary!
bright students appreciate her the most
Maintains very high standards
Really lame prof!!!!
she's tough but very helpful and considerate
made me really interested in psychology
Very helpful prof. She spent hours responding to my e-mails.
Tough, but knows her ****
best psych prof
Best Psych Prof By far
blonde hair, nice figure, young, good dresser, great smile
Opposite of a jackass. Spends time answering your questions and emails. Nice.
very interesting course, but MCs are hard
very boring
very nice!!
very bad teacher - DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE!!!
very nice, friendly prof...tests are quite hard but still fair...
MC tests are a bit on the tough side, but very nice when you ask her for help. She replies to your emails usually within 24hrs. Kind and friendly. No bull****.
Good professor. Multiple choice tests are fair and come straight from lecture/text. Definitely focused more on text as lecture is almost supplemental. Sometimes she lacks knowledge in certain aspects of the course.
Tests are brutal...
Super nice and super cute. She knows the topic inside and out. Lectures are fun and informative.
Awesome prof - interesting lectures, always tries her best to answer questions.
lame class - lame prof; learned nothing except department is hurting for new faculty
one of the most interesting courses i've ever taken. she made the material accessible and easy to understand
great course!
Class was really a disappointment - approach was sophomoric and content couldn't compensate
intense course in the summer.. can be confusing when the material is quite similar
Her tests are m.c., but still very difficult. She expects you to know very small details about drugs. If you're not into drugs, you're at a disadvantage.

excellent
She's great! Very knowledgeable, makes course content interesting.Easy to listen to, very clear and very receptive to questions and to students. Only thing, tough tests, expects you to remember alot of textbook detail.
Very hard exams, which seem more about your to test-taking ability than psychology. She is somewhat disorganized but interesting nontheless.
Tests were quite hard. Have to know every detail in the text book. But she is a pretty nice person.
she was very well organized in her lectures but they only helped a little in studying for tests. i found the tests were based alot on small details in the textbook.
her exams are extremely difficult. You need a good psych background to do well. You have to spend a lot of time in this course to do well. Cramming wont work for this. LOTS OF READINGS!!
She is amazing, very cool and the makes the course really interesting, She adds clinical experience which makes the disorders more real. Her tests aren't super easy, but they are fair. She's been my favorite prof so far
I really enjoyed the way she taught the course, really straight forward, although her exams were a little tricky nonetheless she is one of my favourite profs.
SHE WAS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PSYCH PROFS, SHE'S LIKE A HIP, YOUNG AND COOL PROF. BUT ALSO VERY SMART AT THE SAME TIME. BOTTOMLINE JUST ATTEND CLASS, AND READ THE TEXTBOOK, YOU WILL DO FINE.
Her exams aren't easy but they're fair. Her lectures are GREAT. I took this course as a 3-hr long night class and I still found the lectures very interesting.
I really loved this course and Dr Hanson made it super interesting. She is a very nice, approachable person. Her tests aren't easy but they are fair - as long as you do the readings you'll be fine. Likes to focus a bit on picky details from the text.
this was a distance ed course. Even without face to face contact, Dr.Hanson was awesome! Qs were answered right away. Exam was fair- if you study you'll do great. Great prof!
she's pretty, funny, super clear, everything you ask for in a psyc class! A great introduction prof for clinical psyc
3 hour long class and I am riveted the entire time. Very interesting, involved, great prof. Exams are hard because of scaling, but are fair. Very highly recommended
Really bad prof - thinks she's cool but hasn't got a clue!
Really interesting lectures (you always get something out of attending), relates it back to clinical experience, answers all questions very clearly and intelligently (even bizarre ones) - she's also always very careful to note when she's saying something that's her own opinion. Great prof.
for the record she is cool, plus shes a standout babe
Best prof among all other psych profs..class wasnt boring...and she knows what she is doing! You wont fall asleep for sure! tests are fair
FANTASTIC prof. This is the only course where I went to all of the lectures. The subject matter is interesting itself but she uses examples extremely effectively, and you just end up wanting to go to class. Exams are fair and she's really helpful and answers questions quickly. Great notes.
great prof in terms of ability to explain concepts, very knowledgeable and interested in her field and it comes through in her lectures, bent the class over backwards on her final though with some ridiculously specific questions, lots of details asked on exam from text (NOT in lecture)
she made this class very interesting; funny woman she is. she tries the best of her powers to make things simple. but you MUST READ THE TEXT BOOK. ;)
Fair marker but you have to do the work. She's very helpful and gives extra information when asked.
tests are all multiple choice. the 1st one was very easy, the 2nd test was hard! her lectures are fun but there is lots of memorizing to do!
Ok, the professor is good and lectures in entertaining fashion. BUT! Her exams are brutal!! Multiple choice with extremely unpredictable questions based on memorization by heart. Gee, I have never had such low marks in my entire student life.
I feel the same way as the last poster. She is a good prof with great clarity. I agree that exams were very tricky, but the class mean stayed high through the term! I haven't done this bad for long time and it's been quite a shock. I guess whether you'll do well or not depends on how much you are into the subject...maybe...
I agree with all you as well! She's a great prof... but i ahvn't done this bad in a course in a while...i think it's b/c our class had some really smart science people (and the course had lots of science related material)
She is a good prof but her exams are based purely on memorization! there are only 3 tests and they are all MC. the final mark I got in her class is the lowest I have ever gotten! My advice: If you care about your GPA, dont take her class. Her interesting teaching style is useless, if you can't get a high grade.
Interesting materals even though all mc..but questions are not really straight forward...need to apply such as diagnose whether the person has a disorder or not....
Taking this class was the biggest mistake of my academic career. Any instructor that puts up with a situation where a fixed number of their students must fair, know NOTHING about instructing adults.
Dr. Hanson is brilliant. This is the best course I have taken at UBC. Her exams test both critical thinking ability and knowledge unlike so many other psychology exams which are just rote memory tests.
this proferssor is so damn hard....
Very approachable and helpful prof. Extremely nice person which made the lectures very enjoyable and interesting... HOWEVER, her ALL m/c tests are quite hard. Do not be deceived by the "all m/c". The m/c questions can be very difficult and you must be able to apply theories and concepts. Great prof w/ good lectures but be forewarned w/ her tests...
one of the best profs i've ever had. answers ALL questions really clearly & patiently to the best of her ability. exams are tough, but the key is to really understand how the disorders differ from one another & memorize criteria for diagnoses. did pretty well by studying that way. shows really interesting videos in class as well.
I took the distance course in the summer and it was pretty intense. The assignments took a lot of time, and she is a fairly tough marker. The final exam is also very diffcult. 30 short answers and 5 long essays. It was nothing like the practice exam. You have to know your stuff inside out. Don't take this if have a bad memory or suck at essays!
Great prof! She works in the field so she is able to give interesting and accurate representations of 'typical' cases. She is very well spoken and clear, and responds well to questions and encourages class input. Exams are fair. Quite a bit of reading, but not as much as other upper level psych courses.
ridiculously tough marker. exams are all essay and short answers. if you want to take this class, be prepared to have no life.. cause just studying hard is not nearly enough!
Awesome prof! Lots of work though and exams are long but fair. She is way better than many profs and you will learn alot from this class. Very helpful too, she even gives little ways to remember important criteria which helps for the final.
Fantastic Prof! Her lectures were always enjoyable and interesting. The exams are definitely challenging but I felt they were fair. Just put the time in to know the criteria, causes and treatments of the disorders she covers in the course.
Her exam questions are over the top. REALLY TOUGH! I only took this class cause I was interested in doing a psych major. After this class, my life was much better. I don't have to study 24-7 and have no social life.
This was a great course! I enjoyed the lectures and the readings were interesting too.
she's awesome!
I enjoyed her lectures but her exams are painfully difficult. Midterm was hard and final was brutal. I ended up getting a B
a realllllllllllllllly good prof. i actually failed this course but im still glad i took it. she made three hrs lecture in the late evening interesting with examples, and just the way she teaches. definitely one of the best!!!
Loved coming to this class! Lectures were always interesting and the text was a good read too. Exams are all multiple choice but you can do well on them if you put the time in to studying.
Awesome class, She is a really good prof. Her tests are M.C and are challenging but fair. As long as you study you will do well. But don't think you can write the exams without studying otherwise you will fail. Just do the readings and you will be fine. Totally recommend her class. Loved it.
Going to class is mandatory, and you will have a lot of notes to drop down. Her mid term and final are ****ing hard, requires not merely memorization or common sense, but you have to know the material deeply to apply in different cases. I end up getting a C+... it was a regret to take this class!
great prof! she tells interesting, relevant stories and paces lectures really well...i took a 2.5 hr night class w/ her and it went by quickly and was never boring. exams are tricky but fair, just read the book and take good notes in class. a really important topic to know more about, and she teaches it really well. definitely recommend!!!
I took her online class and really enjoyed it because the content from the text is so interesting. I got good grades on the assignments (As) but the final exam was SO BRUTAL that I thought I actually failed the whole course. Also if you take the online class, you don't write a mid-term which means you are tested on 8 months worth of material.
Best course I've taken at UBC. Her tests examine both critical thinking ability and knowledge. Fascinating instructor. Bright students will do well in those course. This is not a course for the dumb and the lame.
She was very good! Her examples are easy to understand and remember. You do need however to read both the textbook and attend all the lectures if you want a decent mark. She writes her note down by hand (decent handwriting) so slow note-takers won't need to panic.. overall, great course, great prof!
Laura is a great and engaging teacher who was eager to help her students succeed. In order to be successful in her exams you should pay attention to her notes and read the textbook (equally weighted). Her exam was all m/c: it was challenging but fair.
If you have a good memory, willing to memorize A LOT of terms within a short period of time, and if you can write fairly good paragraphs/essays, you'll do EXTREMELY well. As a Psyc major, this is an easy course comparing to some of the other psyc courses. It's not that bad at all if you're a Psyc major. You'll see..
Extremely clear, interesting lecturer. She brings in example videos and some case studies from her own practice which really makes the material come to life. Be prepared to learn the textbook very well -- a lot of the exam material is right from there. If you work hard, you'll do great -- the test is all M/C, and very fair.
I took this class online and we didn't have a mid-term which meant that all 8 months of material wasn't tested until the final exam. The exam itself was BRUTAL! I studied my butt off but so many questions were text specific and easily missed. Still did ok meaning there must've been a huge scale-up.
Awesome! Don't take this class with anyone else! Very interesting, gives lots of test hints, specifies what you need to know for exams, MC Qs are mostly from the text. WAY less notes than for other psyc classes. Exams were marked quickly. Got a B- by attending class and reading through the text once so you could do very well in her class.
I took this course online thinking that it would be cool to study mental disorders. Boy was I wrong. If you plan to take this course at all, be sure you're amazing at essays and research papers :/
Final exam was insanely hard.
great prof with fair exams. shes very knowledgeable and uses some real life examples so shes really engaging. read the text once, but she likes to test mainly from her notes. i enjoyed the class a lot and got 91% just by showing up to every class !
I LOVED this class! She has so much first hand counselling knowledge and for the first time I felt like I was learning about things that happen to people instead of just psych theory. Super accessible information, always tries to keep it interesting. Exams can be tough but always fair - if you go to class and read the text once, you'll do well.
Best prof I have ever had. It's a tough class though. One tip is to ask lots of questions. She knows her stuff and gives really clear explanations.
UBC would benefit from more instructors like her. She's interesting, engaging and maintains high standards. Dummies don't do well in this course.
Great teacher - made topics interesting and memorable. Would definitely take another class with her! Favorite class by far!
Midterm was difficult; tested "all material" in text and lecture. As for the final, Hanson said that she would remove the more difficult questions; however, this was clearly not the case with the final. Obtuse, tricky questions throughout (A,B,C,A+B,B+C)/(A,B,C,None,2 of above)/etc. Not GPA booster. Prepare to spend many hours memorizing.
This was my favourite course and favourite prof at UBC. Dr. Hanson gives very clear and entertaining lectures and her exams (all m/c) are fair. You will enjoy coming to class and will do well in the course if you study.
Amazing prof! Really nice, exams are all MC so make sure you understand the details and differences between disorders. She is very very nice when you approach her. I had to take it as a SD and she was very supporting and even with that I got a 73 which is amazing for taking a course 1 year after the classes. Attend to class they're fun
I am sure she is a nice lady, and a good prof to take on campus...however DO NOT take this class online. There was no study guide for the terms, and we were told to basically just know everything. I studied really hard, and I still hardly passes the course. Was not very communicative online. Felt I just taught myself.
Very interesting course taught by a very knowledgeable professor. She will respond to questions and is helpful in that regard. This course covers a huge amount of complex material. Exam is the hardest I have ever had. You must know everything down to the finest detail, and no multiple choice. Don't use the e-book - it is full of software issues.
This was a great course! There were two multiple choice exams and though challenging, you will do fine if you study the text. Dr. Hanson is a very engaging lecturer and uses a lot of case examples and video clips - you will enjoy attending her lectures.
The text she uses is full of detail. She is very helpful & quick to answer emails. I studied my ass off and got 90% overall in the online course in Dec 2013 but sobbed in the bathroom after the final it was so hard - and not the same as the practice exam at all. I would def recommend her but make sure you do your work!
I took PSYCH 300A online over the summer, this class may seem easy because of the lack of assignments and work throughout the summer but the final exam was the hardest exam I have ever written. Since there was no midterm, everything from the textbook was a possible question. I do not recommend taking this class online.
I managed to pull off a B-. The term paper was a bit tough, but managed to score a B. The final was extremely discouraging, and everyone left the exam room with the same spaced out and dead expression on their face. Wouldn't really recommend.
This class was totally unfair as the final was extremely specific and impossible to do well on. There were no assignments that tested you on the material prior to the final, so it was hard to know what to expect. Discussion 4%, Paper 36%, final 60% is an easy and lazy way to structure a class. Pretty unfair.
VERY fast grader. She really knows how to effectively lead a full-year online course. That said, if you decide to take the online version, make a schedule for yourself at outset. The course is not designed in such a way so as to force you to keep up. I liked this, but it isn't for everyone.
First of all the syllabus is hard to find for her class. Dont count on following criteria to get by. Love how clear grading criteria is but still will not guarantee an even passing grade by following it. Good luck if you have this prof!
As a distance education class, I was not expecting much interaction between students and the prof, but she is barely there as an instructor. I've taken other distance education courses before, but this is worse. It was a 6-credit course with only 2 papers and 1 exam (40%), with 9 discussions (2%) each.
I found this class too independent. We received no lecture videos/presentations, no powerpoints, and no lecture notes. I wouldn't recommend the condensed, online version of this particular course with Hanson.
Professor Hanson was very clear in her guidelines and was very quick and grading our papers and discussions. Her criteria is very clear and precise so it made it easy to do well on her assignments. However, her final is ridiculously hard so if you expect to cruise to an easy A with DQs and papers your sadly mistaken. Study hard throughout the term.
No lectures or videos, just 100% text-book readings.
