very boring class but easy to get an A-no tests!
Speak up and she'll know who you are, read the books, you'll do fine
No Comments
easy class to fall behind in but if u keep up its ok.. hard tests tho
Easy to get an A, just dont sleep. Remember to read
really interesting topics, but complex relations btw them. good teacher
interesting topics, hard tests!! hard papers!, speak up she likes to know you
Hard papers, do work and speak up in class, fair grader
Class was a waste, plus our grades were 2 months late
Boring as hell, slow to grade, and argues with a bias - overall: nothing to hate, nothing to love
Dr. Henigman is a very intelligent woman who approaches subject matter from a variety of different perspectives and encourages student participation in class discussions. She grades fairly with regards to papers. Take her class...you'll actually learn!
VERY BORING, but sometimes she was simply hilarious...Read and discuss, listen to what she says and take notes. Quizzes takes 4 out of 6 grades. 3 Papers and an easy article portfolio. She can be "persnickity" on the grading though, she said
an absolutely brilliant woman; excellent at creating intelligent, meaningful discussions about what you're reading and applying it to a broader perspective; truly cares about her students and what they get out of her class
Maybe she is brilliant with the english department but if you have another major..please save yourself some time and do not take her..unclear about assignments, very flighty, and the class itself is not only unorthodox but annoying!...RUN!
I had her for Marriage, Sex, and Reform in the 19th Century. She is awesome. The reading seemed dry at first, but she makes it so interesting. She is hilarious, and the things we discussed were so off the wall. Definately worth the work.
Nice lady but boring class. Topics are interesting but few are not. A little hard to find the relation between topics. Only homework is to read articles for the next class. 3 papers and a quiz every other Thursday. Would recommend this class to anyone.
not the most exciting class i have ever taken...assignments pile up at the end till you stress yourself out into sickness.
she was awsome about accomadating just about anything, dont let the work pile up. She would do anything to help a student
boring class w/ good professor
Very Enthusatic and is very willing to help any student.
I absolutely hated the class, almost killed me daily, but the teacher is good for what its worth. Not much work except read stories daily. If your a male I warn you of this class, VERY VERY FEMININE class based on enrollment and topics covered
Pretty easy class, only 4 short papers and quizzes on the articles every other thursday. No tests. However, she is (no offense) annoying to look at and everyone stares at the clock waiting for class to end. I would recommend it if you want to fill a gen ed requirement.
had to take this class for gen ed., but the class itself is easy, quizzes every other week, readings for each class, 3 papers, & a newspaper portfolio. film viewings monday nights. class gets kinda boring but its easy and she tries her best to help you out. would reccommend her to anyone.
Taking this class = one of the biggest mistakes that I have made in college. She is unclear in her assignments, the papers take months to be graded, students have to run the first half of the class in daily discussions. Getting an A- or B is possible, but it will come at a cost to your other work.
Okay class, lots of reading. Attendance is a must, flexible on duedates but class discussion is mandatory and so boring at times. Movie nights get old. Overall good class to take for a Gen Ed
This class is boring! She is a nice professor but the class is hard to go to and stay awake in. She is not too hard of a grader, but it is hard to tell what she thinks of your paper b/c her handwriting is awful.
ok, this class is so stupid. she is in the english department yet she is teaching an amercian culture class. she doesnt come to class with a lesson plan, you just make crap up in class. its best to just learn her views on things and do the lame readdings and watch the lame movies that are conveniently held durring monday night football.
Not a good class. There's minimal work. BUt, its such a boring class. Its like high school english all over again. :-(
AVOID Henigman at all costs. She is a hard grader and her assignments are a complete mess. I got nothing out of her class, a boring/confusing/pretty tough class.
Early American Marriage/sexuality... UGH awful boring frustrating class all semester, rarely returned assignmnets, never had a clue how i was doing but somehow ended up w/ an A. flexible due dates were nice, but overall i hated the class!
This class is stupid ill admit but its the easiest class in that cluster and thats whats important. Take her instead of Timonin, a lot less work. My friend got a B+ and he didn't say a single word in class. She def plays favorites.
Speaks softly and quickly, hard to understand. Furthermore, her reading assignments are ridiculously long and she expects you to read all of them like you have no other time commitments. Do NOT take if you are taking at least 2 other english classes. Has a tendency to drone, put me to sleep more than once. C-
Terrible. Also have her for 410 (stowe) and shes the same for both: doesn't teach, students do all the talking, hard grader, sloppy handwriting, not helpful, takes forever to get grades back. Says the word "interesting" 30x a class because she usually hasn't read the material beforehand. Never taking her again.
I don't advise taking this class. Prof has no idea how to teach. Very soft spoken, maybe she is still asleep in the a.m. Got papers back 3 months after due date. Sloppy handwriting, hard to read. Nice lady but hard grader. She is very willing to help you but not much help. Don't take if you don't have to.
Prof. Henigman is a nice lady, but a terrible teacher. Everything you say WILL be wrong. Entire classes are spent straining to hear her whispered analysis of ONE short poem. You never get work back, and attendance is pretty mandatory. On the bright side, she's pretty lienient on late work. My advice: get a different professor.
She's really easy. And is lenient when it comes to deadlines. I got A's on all the quizzes. Just listen to what she says in class and you'll be fine. do the reading assigned for the day of quizzes that stuff is on it. 6 quizzes, 3 short papers (one's in class) final is all writing. Some material is actually interesting.
mumbles like crazy! if you do manage to catch what she is saying, though, you'll notice that she turns every early american novel into a love triangle. she also terribly overuses the word "rhetoric," which gets very annoying after a while. don't plan on getting your papers back for a loooong time, and forget about understanding the comments.
You can get by with skimming readings and then listening in class, but some material is actually interesting. Prof. Henigman is really smart and challanges students to critically think about theories, meanings of readings, etc. I emailed her several times asking questions and never got a response tho..
3 Papers, 6 quizzes and a final. The quizzes and final are all writing. You are expected to read multiple essays to be discussed in class. Nice lady but expects you to remember & connect multiple essays & concepts which can be difficult towards the end of the year as you've read about 100 different essays. Overall its difficult. I don't recommend.
don't take her. get a better prof. she only wants her own opinion or what interests her
A nice lady who really does care about her students and class. A lot of readings to do in order to get a good grade in the class but they were occasionally interesting and actually worth reading.
never clear on assignments or what she is asking for. always answers questions with other questions. tough grader and expects you to memorize what she asks you to read, and she assigns a lot of reading outside the texts as well as what's in the book. would not recommend.
Multiple readings due each class that are actually really interesting, however assigns too many to cover in the time period so you're left guessing on the quizzes. 3 short papers. 6 short answer quizzes, lowest grade dropped. Final is comprehensive but fairly easy. Tough grader but if you do the readings and study for quizzes easy A.
The class is extremely interesting, but there are so many readings that all of them start to blend together. The quizzes are on random readings but if you listen in class then you'll do well on them. Overall it's a valuable class, but be prepared to read a ton.
Love her! Very smart and interesting conversation, makes it easy and comfortable to discuss the readings. There are readings due every class but they aren't very long and they're interesting. Also get to watch movies and the papers and quizzes are simple if you have done the readings.
Henigman is a solid teacher. You have to read a lot. There's no tests and she doesn't really provide you with a lot of information. The curriculum is very vague and it's kind of hard to explain but Dr. Henigman is SUCH an easy grader. I could make up answers on the quizes and get credit. You can get through just fine doing the minimum
Henigman is the bomb, and her quizzes are really not bad. Don't take if you don't want to read or you hate the subject, but if you don't mind the readings it's a really interesting gen ed. It made me decide to be an anthro/sociology major. She drops lowest 2 of 6 quizzes, and there are three easy papers. Also the only book you use is an $8 novel.
Her class is really easy and interesting. The readings are usually worth the time it takes to read them, and her quizes aren't hard if you do the reading and pay attention in class. If you don't know a lot about Harrisonburg you learn a little about it in class. Definitely take this class if you can.
She tends to mumble and ramble a lot and you spend most of the time either zoned out, trying to understand what she's saying , or straining to hear what she's saying. Very good on giving feedback for papers, if you can read her handwriting. Three part final, which was weird. I ended up wishing that I would have withdrawn when I had the chance.
Do not take her class. She breaks papers up into 4 parts each, most of which are completely useless busy work; who has time for that? Her reading assignments are ridiculously long: 275+ pgs a night on average this semester. You can't hear her half the time she talks and, if you argue with her, she just says you read it wrong, regardless of the arg!
I love Dr. Henigman. She's a sassy old broad and teaches some really good books in this class. You can skip up to four times, the readings are hard but you can B.S. your way through class by just reading the first couple chapters, discussion almost never moves far past that. She's great to talk to if you're ever confused
You have to do the readings but they aren't bad, a few short papers, a project, and only quizzes (drops 2 lowest) no tests except final. The class can get boring but overall it was interesting and doable.
This was the easiest class I've ever taken, but still extremely interesting. Prof. Henigman is also very awesome. You don have to buy a textbook, instead you print off reading each night. I never print them off/ read them because you go over everything in class. The quizzes are just over what you discuss in class. Highly recommend!!! TAKE HER!!
The AMST 200 course is an awesome course! Six times a semester you meet up to watch a movie about the topic you are studying and they are really interesting movies! The class is completely discussion based and you have daily readings. She's the nicest and funniest prof out there! THE BEST GEN ED TEACHER AND CLASS! TAKE HER!
Absolutely wonderful teacher. Just skim over the readings before class and have some things to say and you'll be golden. She's a techer that actually makes you think about life and have interesting conversations rather than just memorizing facts. It's conversation based and is definitely an easy A gen-ed if you're okay with talking. Easy grader.
Expect to read about 30 pages of textbook before each class. Nice person but her lectures are really boring. She will talk about the readings for the entire hour and half while you sit quietly and try not to fall asleep. Probably should pay attention tho because the passages/sentences she talks about will appear on the quizzes every Thursday.
I really enjoyed this class. It is an easy A but its also inspiring. She changed my outlook on a lot of things. Class is only discussions, a few papers, and quizzes (drops 2). Talk a lot in class and stop by her office hours and she'll love you. A lot of reading but totally doable. Best gened for this cluster!
This class was both very enjoyable and enlightening, despite it being my earliest class all semester! Professor Henigman is smart, encouraging, and accessible. She goes out of her way to make sure everyone's comments are heard and validated during the discussion. The required film viewings are lots of fun too!
She is a sweet woman but a terrible professor she expects you to remember every word she says in lecture or you will get points taken off of the quizzes. There is 4 papers one is in class and she expects it to be just as good as the ones you do at home. She also is all over the place in lecture. Again she is a sweet woman but not understanding!
There are a good amount of readings but most of it you can learn from the discussions. Every topic is so interesting and she is amazingly knowledgeable on what she teaches. Morning lectures, unless there is a film on Monday and then you won't have morning class. I would definitely take it again, do it if you want an easy Gen Ed.
Such a nice woman!! She's very passionate about what she teaches and it shows. Definitely asks for you to read a ton, but it's not necessary if you're engaged during the discussion, which is a must. You need to go to her office hours if you want to know your grade, and all of her tests are essays, so be ready to write!
This class taught me a lot, but a lot of it was useless. It requires a lot of work outside of class, including several papers. You have to pay close attention to the lectures or you won't do well on the quizzes. Be prepared to listen to an hour and fifteen minutes of mostly uninteresting discussions.
Great gen ed to take. It was an easy class, but I learned a lot and it shaped my world view dramatically (and helped me choose my minor). It's a discussion-based class, and focused on concepts not vocab and facts and stuff, so it helps you develop important skills for the future. Also, the prof. is sooo sweet and structures the class really well.
Incredibly dry lectures. Literally like watching hung paint dry. The woman is kind but very boring. The lectures are long and miserable, the quizzes mean nothing to your grade but are important in preparing you for the final and the papers are graded very harshly. Also the grading standards are very unclear. Take her if you must, shes not awful.
Professor Henigman is a very smart individual and pushes for participation in class lectures, so don't be the majority that says nothing when the professor is trying to engage the class. There are a decent amount of assignments, but it's not unreasonable by any means. You get about up to five skips before it affects your grade directly.
Quiz every Thursday on readings, two papers, and final exam. Although participation does not count towards grade, she really likes it when you do! Compared to other ged ed profs, she is way better.
6 films, 6 quizzes, 4 papers one of which is "a semester long assignment," and 2-4 readings before every class. Completed all her papers exactly how she expected and recieved a B on all of them, with no explanation as to why. Not terrible but WAY too much work for a Gen Ed.
Professor Henigman is very knowledgeable about what she's teaching, and equally passionate. Her handwriting could be hard to read at times, but I always appreciated the personal, thoughtful feedback she gave for assignments. She cares about what you have to say. During lectures, she's engaging and tells you what you need to succeed. Take her class!
Worst class I've taken at JMU. Henigman is all over the place and difficult to follow. Canvas is extremly difficult to navigate. Lectures are boring, she doesnt make material intersting. Mandatory attendence but you cant gain points. Four shortpapers throughout the semester and 12 page final paper that she is very unclear about. Avoid if you can.
She has weekly quizzes and 2-3 papers throughout the year. As long as you at least skim the reading and pay attention in the lecture you'll be okay. She is really passionate and wants you to participate but you don't have to. I think she is a solid choice for the English gen ed
Dr. H is a queen. She is so understanding and caring, she responds quick and is always helpful when you're confused. You have to at least skim the readings but if you half pay attention to the lectures and watch the videos she makes to explain them you'll be fine. You won't know your grade til the end of the semester but she's pretty easy going.
Worst teacher I have ever had in a class period. I cannot believe the work load she believes us to carry for a gen-ed when we have multiple other classes and tons of other homework. I thought I would take an easy class for gen-ed credits and it would be a breeze but she gives you 60+ pages of reading before every class. Worst teacher I've ever had.
Dear god this class was awful. An incredible amount of reading and written assignments due every single week. Her lectures are so dry and unorganized. The canvas page is so incredibly hectic. 5 major papers and a final 12 page research paper on top of a cumulative final exam. Way too much work for a 300 level.
Be prepared for a lot of reading. Lectures are interesting. Every few weeks there are movie screenings instead of lectures. Participation matters.
Dr. Heingman really knows what she is talking about when it comes to literature. She is a very nice lady and provides great feedback on every assignment. This is a great gen-ed English class to take!
She seems like she knows what she is talking about but my god are her lectures boring. She assigns a ton of reading before each class and then she would just lecture for a whole hour and 15 minutes. Also doesn't put in grades until the absolute end of the semester
Readings each week and a check at the start of the week. There were weekly quizzes that supposedly help for the final. TAKE NOTES! Two papers on which I got a decent grade as long as you try (B). Doesn't show your grade the entire semester. Lectures can be boring but are passionate. Wouldn't be upset if I had her again. Assuming I got a B.
I took her for Eng 221 and I would not take her again.Lecture was all discussion based and we had to read way too much in a short time.If you are good at writing papers, take her, this class shouldn't be hard for you. If you aren't good at writing, like me, this class will be difficult to get an A in as there are 3 papers worth 60% of your grade.
I hate this teacher. Her quizzes make no sense and the homework is a pain. The class is already boring enough and she makes it 10 times worse. She does not put test or quiz grades on canvas so you won't know your final grade until your transcript comes out. If you are looking for an easy credit class DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. She has no idea what she is talking about half the time and just makes stuff up as she goes. The class is so much work for no reason. DO NOT TAKE!
This class is the definition of “doing too much”. Seriously the most amount of work I've had for a single class in my whole college career. So. Many. Papers. So. Much. Reading. Would not recommend!
She is extremely passionate about American Studies, however it is SO MUCH WORK for a GEN-ED. There are 6 quizzes, a handful of films, a few projects, and a couple essays. The classes are all discussion based and she is not very tech-savy. You also won't be able to know your grade because she doesn't use canvas for grades. Overall, wouldn't take.
Lots of readings but if you do them, you'll do well in the course; was able to read most of them in my hour lunch block before the class. Provides good feedback and the lectures are discussion based so they're far more engaging than most of my other classes. Super approachable and kind, just wish we could've seen our grades throughout the semester.
Do NOT take this class. She lectures every class with no slides just talking making it very hard to follow to write notes. It is very hard to understand any information she is explaining because she only talks and has nothing on the board. I even have the text book and cannot follow. Grades are also locked all semester.
The worst professor I've ever had in my undergraduate career. She is SO rude, talks all class mumbling half the time so you can't understand what she's saying, requires everything to be on paper- including purchasing a $100+ paper textbook. DO NOT TAKE HER. If you have the option avoid this class at all cost.
I used to love English, but this is genuinely the most insufferable class to sit through at times. The professor mumbles badly and goes on random tangents. $100 textbook required and additional readings on top of it. Daily reading quizzes, 6 in-class writings, 2 papers, and 2 exams. Everything is on paper, and the exams are insanely specific.
This is the hardest English class I've ever taken. She doesn't post notes, requires you to buy 8 different books as well as use close to 15 other readings. If you're not up for studying obscure material, or doing a writing assignment that she grades hard every week, do NOT take her. You'll thank me for avoiding this killer class with average teach
Go into this class with the mindset that you will not get higher than a B. All papers are handwritten in class but are graded as if you had weeks to write it. Exams are extremely specific and based on the lectures she mumbles through half the time. She is very unapproachable as well and locks grades until after the withdraw deadline.
Looking back, she wasn't that bad. While I was in the class tho everyone bonded over disliking her/class bc it's boring. I loved how it was discussion based, but lots of reading I didn't do & I did fine. Impossible to take notes bc she scribbles chicken-scratch on the chalkboard so just pay attention. I wrote a 4 page paper in 1 day & got a B- 🙌
This is by far the worst professor i have ever taken. Classes consist of boring lectures with random tangents that are hard to follow, no slides just 75 minutes of mindless yapping. She sends out VERY passive aggressive emails to the whole class. 2 tests 2 essays which are of 20% of your grade each, so if you do badly, its hard to recover from
Mumbles through 75-min lectures with no supporting materials and assumes everyone has the same background. I attended every class, took notes, and went to office hours—still got a B. Skipping class isn't wise, even though attendance isn't taken. One bad assignment can tank your grade. Often lectures run over time and are hard to follow.
Worst professor I've ever had. This class was not set up in a way that is conducive to learning. She talks for 75m straight, mostly mumbling inaudibly and is hard to follow. 2 exams, 2 papers, 6 in class writings, and weekly quizzes. The exams are short and very specific, so if you don't come to the lectures you have no shot at a good grade.
As nice of a lady as she is, this class just straight up sucks and she doesn't make it any better with her boring lectures full of mumbling. Attendance isn't taken but if you miss class you will quickly become confused. I'd recommend a different class if you're looking for a gen-ed
The most miserable poorly run class I've ever taken. Absurd workload that included endless readings, multiple papers, and a closed-note final with 4 handwritten essays from memory. She lectures nonstop, overanalyzes everything to death, and is consistently late. Asking questions gets you talked down to and she is just exhausting to deal with.
