Hixon's lectures aren't that great. She just recycles the PowerPoints from the previous assessment professor Tami Andrews. Those PowerPoints are not even based off the textbook she assigns to the class. Her tests mostly come from those PowerPoints (which is from another book), so pay more attention to the PowerPoints rather than the text readings.
Professor is great. I love her power points and lectures. She emphasizes on what is important to know.
Decent instructor, but very helpful. You will learn more in lab than in class. The assessment class is only 2 hours, so most of the time the lectures get cut. She does not start lecture after about 15-30 minutes due to pep talk. She provides study guide for exams. Exam content are heavy due to 10+ chapters. Exams are specific from her powerpoints.
Loved Ms. Hixon. It is very difficult to jump from lower level classes straight into J1 classes such as assessment. Took me time to adjust which cost me my A in this course by 1%. All you need is to focus on the study guides! You will do great if you focus on normals, abnormals, and tests. BEWARE OF TEST 2. Start your reviews immediately.
She can't get through a full lecture without running out of time. She reads from the slides, and doesn't really expand on the info she's giving you. The previous instructor's slides and exam blueprints (provided by Hixon) along with supplementation from the book and PrepU's are your best bet for success. Rethink study habits now--Quizlet was great.
Not sure why reviewers don't like her, she's a good professor. The test reviews and PPT's really helped with tests and she emphasizes what will be on the tests. She's like a coach who tells you what to know, which worked great for studying. You must study a LOT, 15+ hours weekly, it's too much material to cover in class. Her class was enjoyable.
Mrs. Hixon gives VERY helpful exam information. Her lectures are interesting and useful and she gives exam study guides out.
I loved her energy & humor! Excellent professor, she hints at what to focus on and what topics were on the exams + detailed study guides. 3 exams+ EASY cumulative final. She does 4 inclass quizzes and 8 Shadowhealth online assignments +prep U's. Her notes come exactly from the book but I used it for more info which helped. 8-10 chaps per exam, alot
This is for Assessment lab: I had Jenkins & she was awesome! Very patient, caring and won't hesitate to help you with your skills. Lab is 3 hours, every week we did write ups/document q's about specific organ systems and examined our partner. 2 OSCE's- physical examinations that you must pass + assignments you take and do on patients in hospital.
Focus on PowerPoint slides and study guides to prepare for exams. Exams one and two are easy. Third exam is the most difficult. The final is so easy you could probably make a 100 on it. Dombrowsky gives 100's for everything in lab if you have him. Overall decent professor. There were 2 in class quizzes this semester. Points given back on exams.
Her lectures are useless. You will not learn anything showing up to class. Her exams are so hard and she doesn't help you prepare for them. This class will ruin your GPA. Unless UTA steps in and fixes this class, then you are in for a treat. In lab, you spend most of your time sitting around waiting for time to end. it is pointless. enjoy
Hixon is an energetic instructor, but she does not cover info in depth. You must read the text. Her PowerPoints aren't very helpful for the tests, either. Use her "How-to-study" guide. Know that this class is all about knowing DETAILS not concepts, so being familiar with the content isn't enough. An 'A' is possible but expect to study a lot.
Hixon is funny but a terrible course organizer. She no longer gives guides; her blueprints are inaccurate. She did not transition well to the online environment post pandemic.
Loved her teaching style! Hixon is one of the best I've ever had, I wish she taught every BSN class. You'll study/learn a ton, but she gives you direction. Don't skip her online office hours b/c she gives wonderful exam reviews. Also enjoyed the labs. I purchased used Weber 5th edition online for $6 to help study for exams and it was perfect
Horrible. Lectures were pointless. Exams were beyond hard. Tested on things she said wouldnt be on the exams. But what a surprise. They were. Very disorganized and way too much crap
This class is easily the hardest class you will take in your J1. She has changed how she has done things previously, no more exam blueprints. You study aimlessly wondering what is relevant to the test and what isn't. Lectures are just there, not required and will not help you succeed. There is assignments due weekly and they are only to annoy you.
Was not the greatest teacher. She was complained about quite often as her teaching methods are subpar. Also, went to her for help and she was very rude and not helpful at all.
You will most likely get a B in this class for no good reason. The highs on exams tend to be low As which means it is nearly impossible to make an A. The content itself is straight forward, the tests do not reflect when is learned in class or the textbook. Wastes class time not focusing on important content.
Tended to be a little unreasonable in expectations, mostly because she does not have clear expectations. Tests are not very similar to lecture or text content. Does not provide thorough blueprints as given in other classes. Wastes class time chatting about our clinical rotations while we need to be focusing on content for testing. Very annoyed.
I dont know why people rate her so badly. I found her tests more straight forward than foundations. All I did was listen to her lectures and read the book based on the lectures, and I hardly struggled. Yes, its a lot of chapters, but so is every other nursing class. I felt her test were fairly easy compared to others, and shes a very sweet prof!
Her power points, and her online classes are USELESS- Waste of time and won't help you pass the exam Just follow the Exam Blueprints and read the chapters that will be covered in the exam( Read, learn and understand the Assessment procedures and Figures of the book) Seems like a lot but just highlight the main idea, Doing this will help you pass
Her PP are a waste of time they are useless. Her lectures are also a waste of time- not exam related. She does not prepare you for the exams. So don't waste your time. Review/read the chapters that'll be covered in the exam. I learned a bit too late didn't pass the first exam but the rest I did good just reading the book. Her class and PP are USELE
I can't even begin with how poorly this class is organized. There is so much content we are tested over and she uses 30 minutes out of our 3 hour lecture to cover pertinent content. It is almost impossible to make an A in this class. I am very frustrated and the method of teaching needs to be revised significantly. She is kind but not helpful.
Here is my recommendation for this course: DO NOT USE THE LECTURES OR POWERPOINTS TO STUDY. Your best bet is to read the book. The reading is not too bad. Under subjective and objective data collection, memorize key points and assessment tests and you will have more success than using the powerpoints. She is a nice professor.
Easily one of the worst academic experiences I have had at UTA. The material itself wasn't hard, there was just 0 direction given for preparation for exams. Lectures were extremely superficial and did not really help. My grade went up when I just spent time reading the book during lecture instead of listening.
Lecture was absolutely unhelpful. Important content was not focused on and not discussed in depth. The ppts were vague. Exams questions were not from the ppt and it was too late when I realized the book is the BEST bet. I could've definitely done better. The content was not hard to study at all but it would've been nice if the teacher taught.
I barely made an A in this course. Reading the book is your best bet at getting a good grade. Lectures will not do anything for you. She is kind, but ultimately kind of vague and not helpful for exams. Read the book, read the book, read the book!
While I'm sure Mrs. Hixon is a nice person, she is not a good assessments teacher. She is very unhelpful when answering questions, mispronounces terms constantly, as well as saying "um, so, uh" literally every 3 seconds in her lectures. Her lectures, mind you, are barely related to her exam content. I'm not sure why she posts them. Her OOH are bad.
Dont waste your time with lectures and OOHs. Theyre vague and a waste of time. Use the book as a bible. Test questions are pulled from charts and assessment findings. Your best bet is to use the student success center exam reviews as it condenses all the information you need for each exam.
This class was too hard. She wasnt clear about expectations and needs to step it up. Very disorganized and tests dont line up well with lectures or reading
Professor Hixon is very confusing, condescending, and not helpful to students who want to do good in her class. The way that she spent lab time making jokes with other professors/trying to be funny instead of teaching us real content (and saying "umm" "uhh" every 2 seconds) really just got so annoying.
This class is tough when it doesnt need to be. Her objectives and testing guidance do not line up with her exams. Study all the types of assessment tests, even though her testing guide says they are not important. She wastes a lot of time in lecture just talking.
I would not wish her teaching on my worst enemy. She was an unclear grader that did not communicate what she wanted. Long lectures with no meaning. Her tests were the worst with random information and weird questions. Taught the class as if the students were already nurses when we were not and was upset when we did not understand / follow.
Worst teacher ever. Someone must have told her to be a teacher as a joke and she took it seriously. Tells us to read, I read and the power points are copy and pasted from the book. content in lecture is irrelevant to the tests. insane amount of information, don't know where to start. brags about how the average in the class is 70 and below.
One of the worst J1 classes. For our second exam Professor Hixon gave all of the student who attended class a review guide for the test but those ones who attended virtual did not get anything. Its like even though we are in a pandemic the Professor punishes those who do not attend class in person even though we have a option.
The worst. So condescending and brags about how hard her class is. I went to lecture once and never went back. Don't let her scare you into failing; use the textbook to study and you'l be fine. She refused to answer questions via email. You have to be a mind reader to get the assignments done on the first try. Says "uhm" at least 3x per sentence.
She speaks down on you and makes you feel like a failure. When I had a post exam review with her, instead of discussing which answers I got wrong and explaining, she skimmed through everything quickly without an explanation and said "you got this one wrong.. we covered this in class" and she even kept smiling as she was telling me what I got wrong
She spends half the time in lecture talking about herself and the other half of the lecture saying um. She prides herself on her class being "hard" instead of being a good professor that wants to see her students succeed. If you can't read her mind on the homework then good luck. I have a feeling she likes giving out incompletes.
Professor Hixon is by far the most condescending, arrogant and does not want her students to succeed. Her responses are all the same "I talked about this in lecture", she does not believe in helping her students. It's as if she fuels off students struggle. Would NEVER take this professor again.
i feel like i'm getting lectured by my mom whenever i go to hixon's class. she always talks about how hard her class is and how so many people failed rather than helping out her students. she takes forever to reply to her emails. your best bet for assessment is to focus on student success & textbook readings. her lectures & powerpoints don't help
People moan and moan about his woman. Look, she expects you to read the book and listen to lecture. Further more, she doesnt take half ass answers on her assignments. My take on her is that most people take her straight out of high school where they never did any real work or thinking and then she expects people to do so.
One of the hardest J1 classes ever! This class would be a lot easier if there was a different Professor teaching. First exam was horrible, PowerPoints did not align. For exam 2 Hixon punished those who did not come to class by giving those attended class a review, while leaving the student who attended virtually hanging.
In this class the only thing that got me through was student success and the textbook. The book will be your best friend. I never really went to lecture cause I found it a waste of time. Just spend time reading the book and youll pass. Assignments are fairly easy.
Honestly never went to class. The textbook is ESSENTIAL to pass, and I seriously cannot stress using Student Success enough. Hixon is a tough teacher, never responds to emails, a hard grader, apparently is mean to students and doesn't want to help them succeed. Just read the book and attend student success and you'll do great!! Good luck.
She said "um, uh" 60 - SIXTY - times in a 13-minute video recording. So dont bother watching/attending lecture. Its a huge waste of time. Read the Abnormalities section in your textbook and visit Student Success since they do a better job than Hixon. Just because she flaunts the alphabet after her name doesnt mean she can teach future nurses
It was one of the hardest courses I have ever taken. Exams were brutal and her questions are hard to read. She answers questions with questions. I usually do not feel better after interacting with her. The best thing to do is use your PrepU's and then read the textbook a lot and start early
I showed up for the first lecture and never came back, I am sorry but I do not need to hear about your triathlon career especially when exam one wipes the floor with me after using her advice to use the lectures to study. Please just grind textbook and save yourself from her lectures. Also if you email her prepare to get a cryptic response back??
While Hixon herself seems like a nice person, she is not a great professor. I cannot stress reading the chapters, doing prepus, and going to student success. Her ppts will not help you even though she says they will and don't be fooled by a study guide; it's just a laundry list of info, nothing helpful. Pay attention to the abnormals in the book.
I actually enjoyed her after I learned her personality. I picked up a few things in the lectures but mostly used the book to study from. The book is your BEST FRIEND! She will help you with assignments if you just ask. Lecture is key for symptom analysis assignment.
One of the worst professors ever! This lady does not care if you are struggling in her class. Please only reach out to student success if you are needing help with the course. She wants students to fail her class and think its funny when students dont do as well on her exams. Please read the book if you want to pass the class!
not consistent with her grading. If you are having difficulty in class, she doesn't help you; it feels like the only people that actually wants you to do well is student success. It's sad to see nursing professors feel proudful of students doing bad in their class. She doesn't encourage or listen to her students.
Worst class and Professor ever! This Professor is very arrogant and talks down to her students instead of trying to help them. She brags about how students fail her class and how the test scores are low. I never attended a lecture and still passed. Please utilize student success they are very helpful and will help you succeed in this class.
Worst Professor at UTA! Professor Hixon gets excited when students fails her class and its ridiculous. Never attended lecture due to catching covoid this past semester and still made an good grade. For exam 2 Hixon gave the student who attended class a exam review while leaving the virtual students hanging even though we have a chose to attend.
This class is tough which is to be expected, read your book study the abnormal findings, I did not listen to her lectures, but they may help others, her blueprints are not helpful it's only the chp. and # of questions, PLEASE use Student Success they are great. Nursing school is going to be tough but it's all up to you what you want out of it.
Study your abnormals, prep u's are helpful, shadow health is helpful, I did not find the lectures helpful, use Student Success, the case studies are not graded but time consuming it's helps in clinical, you can do this, work hard for your grade, don't look for handouts, no extra credit,no dropping your lowest test grade.
Go to student success, test reviews are spot on and help you condense your study into the info that matters. Read the textbook chapters. Focus on the procedure boxes, clinical tips, and older adult considerations as all that info will be on the tests. Hard class but after the first test it gets better because you learn how to study for it.
For exams, just follow Student Success Center guidelines. I made an 88 from studying SSC reviews. Exams are easy. I did not read the book and did not do any case scenario.
I loved Hixon. I would suggest going to her lectures and buying the physical book. The class is heavy but very doable. Plan the 5 day study plan recommended by Student Success and you will be fine. The hard copy of the textbook saved me on her tests. Practice doing the assessments and it will help!
Buy the physical textbook and follow Student Success' study guides and you'll do fine. I found her lectures helpful since she tells you what to focus on for her exams.
Best advice to give before the first test: GET. THE. PHYSICAL. BOOK. When I got the physical textbook, my grade improved by 10 points on the tests. Use student success resources, look at those abnormal tables in the textbook, and it doesn't hurt to attend her lectures (she usually does reviews the week before exams for those that do show up).
I haven't even finished this class yet, but I don't recommend this teacher. Halfway through this class and this professor has a coach who grades the case scenarios and doesn't grade them herself. I have done everything I can to make sure my case scenario was correct according to vid. Rewatching her videos is painful and everyone in my group agrees.
Went to the first class and never went to class after that. Powerpoints were useful to understand baseline knowledge of the chapter but not enough to successfully take tests. Read normals and abnormals in the textbook.
I did not find her lectures useful to learning the material. She goes on long tangents and gives a very brief overview about lecture topics. She comes of as snide and very preachy about people showing up to her mostly useless lecture. Study the PowerPoints, abnormal findings, and assessment procedures in the book. Clear grading criteria.
Only attended her OOH when material needed clarification. Relied heavily on student success and the textbook to succeed in this class. Professor seemed nice, however I never dealt with her personally.
The um'iest professor you will ever have. She says um and uh every other word. Attend OOH for clarification and rely HEAVILY on student success to succeed in the course. Personally lectures, PrepU's, Shadow Health were not helpful. Exam reviews with student success as well as their supplemental files helped. Use your textbook to study abnormal!
Hixon is an amazing professor but it is the material that makes this class hard. Assessment is hard but with going to lecture, studying effectively, and doing your assignments on time, you will be fine! She makes class very enjoyable and I hope to have her as a professor again!
Do not recommend taking her. She is very condescending in the way that she talks to students. Also, about 4 times a lecture we had to hear how she just got her doctorate. I will say to attend lectures and watch her facial expressions. She will not have a nurse face at all when it comes to talking about information that's on the Exam so take notes.
I really enjoyed professor Hixon. Attending her lectures actually helped me what to expect on her exams, she has clear expectations for the assignment. Her exams are straightforward, MAKE SURE to use Student Success materials provided and watch the exam review videos!!!! Besides Student Success, read the normal and abnormal findings tables as well.
Assessment is a tough class, but Hixon makes it very clear what is expected in the course and even gives out answers to case scenarios. Powerpoints and student success contain most of the information that will be on tests, but make sure to read over the abnormals in the textbook. Tests are slightly easier than foundations.
She's nice, but her lectures are useless. Sometimes she did assignments with the class, but it's recorded. She is an incredibly tough grader and would count answers wrong if it didn't match her answer exactly, even if it is still technically valid. Just read the book (especially tables!!) and look at powerpoints. Also her "um" habit drove me NUTS.
Tough grader, but gives clear grading criteria. Allows note sheets for exams. Has bonus hours after lectures to answer questions, go over difficult concepts, and clinical skills. Participation assignment to replace a quiz/PrepU/case scen. Watch her videos for case scenarios. May have to email her multiple times or in-person for responses.
For Older Adults, there are no exams that require a camera :) however, there are quizzes and assignments each week. Prof Hixon has a lot of enthusiasm and tries to make class as easy and enjoyable as possible.
Lectures weren't req, but highly recommend. She was clear and I liked her anecdotes. She prepped us for the exams v well imo, and made it feel like a patho class which I rlly enjoyed. She is a bit awkward but always willing to meet with u if u needed to. Overall v helpful, good speaker, and exams weren't too difficult. Chose her again for geront :)
There are not enough words to describe how awful of a professor she is. Unfortunately, the class is mandatory and there is no way to not have her. The way she grades is ridiculously hard and inconsistent. Does not support, care, or have any lenience for students. If you look for help from her she is extremely passive aggressive.
Professor Hixon speaks quickly in lectures, often rushing through PowerPoints and leaving some topics unexplained. She covers four case scenarios in class but deducts points for little mistakes. Balancing the case scenarios with studying for the foundational exam the following week is challenging due to poor timing and their time-consuming nature.
Class is very lecture heavy, everything that is on the test us on the powerpoint slides and in the textbook. Tough grader when it comes to case scenarios and symptom analysis even though we go over them in class. Go to lecture, read the charts in the textbook, go to Student Success and you should be good.
Great professor! Exams come from the tables in the textbook and her power points! Although she really just reads off the slides, she will tell you what you need to know in class for the exam and helps with assignments in person!
Very tough grader and does not care for her students. Would not take her again.
Professor Hixon does not really care for her students. Is a hard grader for no reason. If you add an extra period or miss a period in a sentence she will take off points. Just take another professor.
She reads the slides and even though she is reading, she said uhm 32 times on one slide. She doesn't know how to pronounce common terms, doesn't explain anything, and just runs through the slides and skips around randomly. Just terrible. I only had to listen to her lectures but usually couldn't even bear it. Awful!
Multiple typed assignments & she grades them very hard with little help/rubric. Make sure you submit your right assignments on your case scenario I accidentally submitted the wrong assignment & she wouldn't regrade it even though it was before the due date. Exams are easy you have a memory aid just write everything from the slides.
She is a really good professor and I really don't see why people say she is a bad one. I agree that the case scenarios are sometimes just busy work but I do think the SBAR section is useful. She is very useful when you USE YOUR RESOURCE AKA HER. I say this because other comments I've seen discredit her because they don't attend lectures or study.
Would not recommend at all, very picky grader with little to no guidance. Feedback from her is pointless. Does not prioritize success. Lectures are not helpful, get ready to teach yourself!!
