Very nice.Spanish is first language so she has an accent but she is easy to understand.hates tests so she always gives out the questions a week before so can be prepared.Easy tests and only 2 short papers.midterms, finals are essay but given questions beforehand and allowed outlines.good movies.EasyA
If you are at all interested in hist she is awful. while an easy A, making it through her dull and horribly easy class to the end to get your automatic A is more difficult than actually earning one in a real class. No need to show up. just figure out the test dates and guess. dont worry, you'll pass
If you are looking for an easy A take her class.
Aside of appearance, Prof. Larque has a very thick Mexican accent. Although she has plenty of potential in her lectures, her accent is thick enough to lull to sleep. As far as reading and classwork goes, you can pretty much "B.S." you way through that class. Even all the way to the final exam.
Laura is a wonderful professor, she brings points of view that one would not normally see. Her accent is a bit thick, but you can get used to it. She is a teacher that encourages you to think i love it.
Laura is a warm and wonder person. Her material is very fresh. Her teaching method is very much analytical, and so engaging. My experience, in the class was wholly positive. There should more instructors like her.
i would avoid taking this teacher if i could go back in time. :(
She expects you to be caught up in your reading as you come to class. She gives essay exams which is very fitting for this type of class. She expects a LOT of analyzation, not just stating the facts. She is a good profesora but I wonder if there is more than one way to analyze something?

I would recommend this teacher and class to anyone considering taking history. Study the outlines she gives, come to class, take notes, stay current on readings, do extra credit, and make sure to do any book or article review she assigns. Do the work and a good grade will be the result. She has a thick accent so if you miss a point in her lectures
Laura seemed very helpful and agreeable at first. However, she is not. Her class is really easy but she'll bore the heck out of you so you'll probably end up with a not so great grade. She does not go over material that will be on tests during class. She doesn't take roll but lectures you and embarasses you if you're late.

heres the thing, good enough attitude and personality. Definately don't be late. But trying to decifer the content of the lectures into notes thru a thick accent made more disorienting by at times very broken english is just frustrating. Might be easier as an afternoon class. And if you grew up with spanish, go for it.
She needed to take an english class. It was like she was telling a really long, boring, barely understandable story. She didn't make the class fun at all. Run far far away from her! She got mad at me when I couldn't take the midterm that day because my brother had just gotten in a horrible motorcycle accident!! I always started to fall asleep!
Class name with her should be changed from Hist 17.1 to Hist of White Supremacy 17.1. If you are interested in white american's wrong doings towards minorities and want to learn a narrow minded point of view of history, then this is the teacher for you.
My review was deleted for no reason, all I will say is this, DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!
Shes a cool teacher, and easy
Very biased, very anti-american sentiments for an american history class. Very hard to understand and unclear on info presenting.

This class is a breeze. The teacher has a horrible accent and very bias'd towards her own culture. Much of the essays can be made up on the spot for an easy A. Don't expect to learn much from her however.

Anyone who says Laura Larque hates white people must be ignorant to the cold blooded facts of our countrys history. Laura doesn't hate white people, she only includes different perspectives and view points in her teachings. She is funny and sweet and grades fairly easy. i reccomend her class and im white!!!
I strongly support Larque. She is the nicest, most sincere teacher I have ever encountered let alone taken a class by. The only reason I can see anyone not liking her is due to their pre-set biases - she likes it when you have your own mind. If you hated her class, it's probably because you're a tool.
some people complain about her being anti-white, but she isn't, and if they can't take it, it's just because history is rough. she can be a bit unclear, but she's really nice, and her perspective is very interesting. if you're interested in latin america, take her.
Great class. Laura used multi-choice testing and assigned short papers. Also, gave extra credit assignments. I would take a class taught by Laura again and recommend her to anyone.
This is the second class I have taken from Ms. Larque, her classes are not difficult and she goes over everything that will be on the tests in class. I found her reading and writing assignments to be interesting. Although some people think she hates white people, I am white and have not felt that she hated me. I highly recommend her classes.
NOT clear at all. Her lectures are unorganized, and althought interesting, way to many dates and imformation that doesnt really add to the class. She's a nice woman, but Not a great teacher.
She had a very thick accent and was hard to understand- I wouldn't recommend taking her unless you can decipher thick accents- a bit confusing and history was distorted to tell what she thought it should be- was not very good
The class is almost purely lectures but if you take notes well and/or record her lectures you will do fine. Her accent isn't that bad but if you speak Spanish she is definitely much easier to understand. She comes across as tough but is very nice and cares a lot about how her students do not only in her class but in all their other classes as well.
Her lectures were not clear and she jumps around. She showed favoritism and if she doesn't like you, you will be ignored.
Pretty simple overall. No homework. Two essay exams and a final. Her lectures are pointless. She has a thick accent and doesn't explain her points for the essay exams. Just make sure you read the book in class.
she is the nicest person i had ever met. she is very helpful if you don't understand something you can always talk to her after class, he office hours or make an appointment. she is always in her office. she rarely cancels class. i really recomend her.
I love this woman!! she treats you like your her own child! she's very interested in making sure that everyone is learning, and interested. she is passionate about what she teaches.
Best history class I've ever taken!! Ms. Larque is passionate about her subject and really makes you think. The tests (all essay) are based almost 100% on lectures though, so you MUST attend class. Having said that, if you DID attend class, you'll do fine on the tests. I plan on trying to take her again. She's awesome!
She grades on her method of english and her method of understanding history. Even if you get help it won't matter, if it ain't up to her liking. I would not recomend her. She can be fun though in class. She is nice and if you have time she will help you. Her tests are essays, but you have to write the whole book to get and A.
Laura is a great teacher. Yes, she has a thick accent, but you get used to it after a week or two. She is honest and fair and tells you exactly how to do well in her class. I found her exams to be very straight forward-- answer all parts of the question with notes from her lectures. She's very sweet and a great professor.
She makes the class interesting, this is the third class I've taken from her. There was one book analysis paper and an anlysis paper of two chapters from another book. We had a midterm and oral presentations for the final.I highly recommend this teacher.
Laura tells you how to do well and even if you're not doing great in the class, she works with you to bring yourself up. She is genuine in her love for teaching and she wants nothing more than to see you succeed. I highly recommend her! This class opened my eyes to Mexican history.. I think it should be a requirement for anyone in CA!
This is a great class; you will learn things about American history that you've never heard before. And the readings are very interesting too.
Laura is quite an amazing teacher. she really knows history, and wants to help her students understand it. i look forward to taking more classes from her, and reccomend her!
Lots and lots of lecture here folks. I was incredibly enthusiastic about history until I took her class. She's not much for dates and technical stuff, but she still finds ways to make the class dull.
The whole semester is based on lecture from the minute you walk in. You will have 4 essay exams, which you will only recieve an A if you are a good writer and have information down to a T. I took 17.2 and I learned more from researching for the Essay Exams than I did attending her lectures. Her lectures are pretty boring, but she knows her stuff.
what a great teacher! she is very knowlegable and passionate about her subject. doesen't get bogged down with names and dates, rather teaches importance and significance of events..stuff that really matters! tests are mainly from lectures so show up and pay attention.
I would not recommend this class. Teacher does not always have her facts correct, and seems more interested in espousing personal political views than truth. Expect to write a lot, and have grade based on subjective rather than objective criteria. If you can parrot her perspective, you will do fine.
This is a wonderfull history class, she taught us about all the things that we didn't learn in high school. I really enjoy her lectures and the novel she had us read. She is smart and loving, and wants her students to do well.
Started this class in the Summer08. This women seems to know her stuff but for no prior knowledge of any history and taking a 6 week course I would not recommend her. If she delevops a bias against you she'll down grade you regardless of your work. sensitive about her accent. the book was a narrative not helpful, everything is based on her letures
Laura is awesome. Sure, she has an accent, but it's not hard to figure out what she's saying. This "anti-white" stuff is crap - she tells it how it actually was and that makes for a very poor view of whites b/c whites were horrible. She makes you understand why things happened which is awesome. She knows her stuff and I'm taking her again for 8.2.
Grade is completely on one essay and All three Exams (essay form). Nothing but lectures, gets very boring. Jumps around in subject and hard to fallow. MUST BE VERY GOOD AT TAKING NOTES in this class. I'm a slow writer and i fell way behind.
Professor Larque loves history as long as she can express it in a way to demonize white america. Granted white america did some horrible things, but to focus only on that aspect is highly annoying. She admits her bias, but doesn't accept other points of view. She demeans you if you have them. I did well in the class, but didn't like it one bit.
She is definetly biased against caucasians. But that may not bother you. The book she ;uses is almost universally accepted by historians to be a bunch of bull crap. However he class is very easy. I took her because I wanted to get a requirement out of the way with an easy A. Beware, the class is very boring, and she just BSs the whole time.
My favorite teacher this semester. Just to let you know, this class will probably be more fun if you're Hispanic because you'll have a better understanding of her sense of humor. I'm nowhere near an A student, but this class was a super easy A. Well, that's about all I have to say...
Class lectures are pretty boring. Her accent is hard to understand. Don't take her if you are a History major. She only talks about the negative aspects of American history and is disrespectful to certain religions and caucasians. Only positive is that she is organized. Only had 2 essay tests, one book review, and then the final.
Grade is based on 3 tests and a paper, all tests are essay, she picks the topic, and if you are not an expert on the topic, you will get a C no matter what. she is a VERY critical grader, you could not pay me enough to suffer though her class again. everything is lecture and she expects you to already know all the information before signing up.
Laura is a good person, but not a very good teacher. Her accent is hard to understand and her lectures are so all over the place it was hard to keep up. I rarely went to class, she gives out a study guide with the essay questions and I basically taught myself the topics by going online. She is a critical grader, expect all C's
this lady is absolutely rediculous. I wouldn't take her class again if you payed me. she is very uncooperative and if you email her too much she gets mad and tells you to stop. she really just ahouldn't be teaching.
She's nice enough, but is so far liberal its ridiculous. She simply makes up statistics to fit her agenda, which is the destruction of America's legacy and the glorifying of any minority. One of her more comical blunders was when she told us that there are more illegal chinese immigrants in the US than mexican. Completely false.
Larque does seem to deify the Native Americans. If you had no prior knowledge, you'd think pre-1492 America was some sort of Shangri-La-esque utopia. According to her, there was no sexism, imperialism, or slavery prior to Columbus. If you don't mind some liberal and anti-european rhetoric, she's a pretty fun and entertaining teacher.
I wouldn't take any American history class with her. While a kind person (She baked a cake for a classmate's birthday), her class is horribly biased. The only summary that I can come up with is "White people exploited the world." She is very vague and rather scattered... lectures are hard to follow. Take Sal Diaz instead.
Nice lady, but scatter lectures. Take really good notes!! MUST attend class, gives you exact essay test question before hand1 Use textbook, and even online research to study- but incorporate lecture notes in those essay question!! Class can be boring. I dont understand why students think shes biased??
This class was so easy, I never read the book I did all my research for her class on Wikipedia and still got high A's on all my Exams. Great teacher very liberal, only seems to think that Socialism is the only true form of Government, and Capitalism will destroy us all. Oh also bring a laptop to class you'll get bored otherwise.
As a white student I loved this inspiring teacher! You will too so don't let those few in my class who fell asleep & wrote unfavorable remarks keep you from taking it. Laura is amazing.
Fun Class. Great Teacher. Interesting Curriculum.
Fun Class. Great Teacher. Interesting Curriculum. She is NOT socialist, boring or prejudiced, just tells you about our nation's history full of stereotyping races & nationalities to benefit ruling classes economically. Take this class if you want to understand the little details of our nation's history to make it come alive & become interesting.
I wouldn't recommend taking this women if she makes any remarks to imply she doesn't like you as she will not grade you fairly. She openly grades on the grammar and organization of your essay and care nothing for the content unless she s questioning valid points. She contradicts herself and is outwardly rude at times.
Laura was an okay teacher,I feel I might have enjoyed more her lectures if my class hadn't been filled with too many high school graduates.Information comes disorganized at the times. She seemed to view the injustice of the past too black and white, instead gray the makes up history.Take this class if you like history and are interest in mexican imm
attempts to judge your writing and use of language, but inexplicably fails. just one of those teachers who must have fallen into the industry. no useful knowledge acquired, antiquated teaching techniques. also suffers from mental handicap that limits her ability to interpret what should be obvious inferences.
Laura's class consists of her lectures and 3 essay exams. With that said her lectures are fascinating. She can be a bit scattered but if you ask to clarify she will. Students call her biased but some how white teachers aren't considered biased.
Laura is very nice, but her lectures are scattered and there is no homework assignments to bump up your grade. If you happen to not do well on one of the three essay exams, you're doomed.
Larque is a horrible teacher. The book is complete crap, she only focuses on the negatives of early US and NOTHING else, disrespectful to others views and religions, hates whites and capitalism, and blames whites for seemingly every problem. The kids who sucked up only had to do half the final and were graded easier then the ones she didn't like.
Some of the recent negative comments were written by the same student. If you were in our class you would know exactly who it was. I'm white and i don't hate her.I actually enjoyed her class, she is a bit disorganized but she will help clarify. 2 tests and 1 final, all 3 are written exams. I've taken 2 other professors and their exams are the same.
Laura Larque may be one of my favorite teachers of all time. Though it's a survival class, she is quirky and EXTREMELY knowledgeable about her subject. sassy latina, isn't shy to express dissatisfaction or humor and wants her students to be able to think for themselves. Not an easy class, but i liked leaving every day knowing i learned something.
Her class is horrible. She is unfair. Not organized, doesn't speak the language well. She is rude, aggressive, and what she says is completely useless. All lectures are pointless, not well prepared. Shitty explanations and hard grading. 3 essays, you will never have more than 75%, only if she likes you. I've compared with others,
The movies are great, actually the only good thing about that horrible class. She should prepare Power Point slides to guide the students and herself. Weak class. She is aggressive, rude, inconsistent, disorganized, impatient. and explosive. She threatens the class because she has the authority. The worst class I ever taken at SRJC, DO NOT TAKE HER
I left Laura's class having learned more about US history than I ever have; it was invaluable learning from a foreigner's perspective. She's extremely savvy in history & sociology. The class was intense, (I used up an entire one-subject notebook on notes), but if you get an A or B after the second midterm you don't have to take the final.
she is unfair, the class is not hard, but her lectures are hard to understand. She gives wrong dates and is mean if she doesnt like you. She lets students she likes not take mid terms, or not do specific assignments. She is not approachable. Take history with a professor who is fair.
Larqué cannot speak English like a native. She is very stern. She grades hard on her 3 essays but gives SO MUCH extra credit it would be easy to pull an A. Not for hardcore religious or nationalist people. Gives a saddening view of our country, which is far from the perfection you were taught in high school. Not for the immature.
She is Dificult To understand and often make statements That she will not back up with a reference Making it impossible to check her facts. Gets Side tracked easy and grades papers harder then an English teacher. Teaches the value of communism
Laura is an excellent teacher. I am a conservative White male who has always enjoyed U.S. History, and found her class to be very interesting and fun. She tries hard to help anyone do well in her class regardless of background. I have had two semesters with her so far, and hope to take a 3rd class from her next semester.
Take her class if you yearn for perpectives of our country that are fair, presenting the sides perhaps not learned in highschool. Take her if you're prepared to challenge the idealogies we are taught to accept in this country. Yes, she has a Spanish accent. Welcome to tolerance and acceptance and not being fed education that is convenient for you.
She can be pretty funny, and have interesting stories. She can be nice, but also can be pretty rude. I would have been fine with her class except that it seemed like her lectures didn't contain enough information to write an essay on and the book she used wasn't helpful at all. She also picks favorites.
she grades essays completely unfairly and can't even spell her comments on my paper correctly. mixes up dates and bounces around history which makes it extremely difficult to take notes and study for the essay exams. i do not recommend this class.
She is funny, but her accent no offense is hard to understand. Her class is graded based on essays. I truly dislike this teacher. Worse teacher I have ever taken.
Took an interesting angle on teaching US history which can be a bit blah. Go class, participate & take good notes. Goes over everything you need to know for the 2 in-class essays & final, you get a notecard w/ an outline. 1 book report as well, not hard, mostly your opinion. Dont bother doing "assigned" reading or getting the textbook, dont need it
Has an interesting external and un-invested approach in teaching US history. Participate, take good notes. Review everything for the 2 in-class essays & final, you get a 3x5 note card for crib notes for each. 1 book report as well, not hard. A digital reader and e-books give you a searchable tool for a big help to study and do book report
She is HILARIOUS. Her history of Latin America before 1830 class was super interesting. She takes things a little too personally with regards to Latin America, I think, but her passion is evident.
SHE IS AMAZING! HER TEACHING METHOD IS GREAT, SHE HAS GREAT EXAMPLES IF YOU ARE A VISUAL LEARNER, YOU WILL LEARN A LOT IN HER CLASS!!!!! SHE IS SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!! SHE HAS A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR AND IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, SHE IS WILLING TO HELP.
Best class I have taken thus far in my "college" years. Laura will help you, she is clear and does anything she can to make sure you truly learn something. Grading is simple to figure out, don't go into the exams thinking she will just give you an A, BUT if you study and prepare, you will get an A. She is fair and wonderful!
The work load is very light, but her grading style is ridiculous. She is not funny. She is not charming. She is stubborn and can not listen to her students' opinions. Constantly contradicts herself. I could not recommend her to my worst enemy. STAY AWAY.
For a class of Latin American History, she focused about 80% on Mexico and the Aztecs. A survey course for the rest of Mesoamerica. When we got to South America, she had the students teach the class through presentations. When she ran out of material, she taught about the Aztecs. Larque has to be the worst teacher I have encountered at the JC.
She is hard to understand and I had a hard time keeping up with her with trying to figuring out what the heck she wanted in her essay exams. I never felt comfortable asking questions in class cause if she didn't understand or like your question, you were feeling like an idiot. Towards the end I got used to her and liked her a little more.
Larque is one of my least favorite teachers. We were supposed to learn about the "unbiased" history of the U.S. However, this meant that we were only learning things from the even more biased view that all rich are corrupt and control the government. She rarely talked about the wars themselves but just that the poor were oppressed during them.
She said we were learning about history from an unbiased point of view, but she only cared about her own opinion. She chose favorites and chose other students to dislike greatly. Her way of grading was confusing, it was very unclear as to what she wanted. And her comments did not justify the grade nor was it constructive. I disliked the her class.
I thought she sounded like an interesting teacher, but she's just rude. she makes childish remarks frequently and belittles many students, and she likes me... but i don't like her. She's basically the equivallent of taking nich anast for history. you don't just need facts but need to understand why, which is hard because she doesn't teach chronolog
She is extremely rude towards those who can not follow the pace of the class and when a question is asked about the subject she gets irritated and will either begin to talk about the subject as if you were a moron or she will completely ignore the question and change the subject.
She is one of the most biased people I know, in and outside of academia which is not good for a History class. Her class is easy. You can pretty much nod off and flip through the textbook when you have time.
Her class is very straight forward, you do the work and you get a good grade. she is somewhat strict. She will also relay her own opinion into her teaching witch can be very liberal at times. Class is moderate.
Took this class about two years ago, and I absolutely love it! Not only did I manage to get straight A's on all of her essays, but I also enjoy her teaching in regards to the Mesoamerican Civilizations of Latin America. Don't really understand the bad ratings on this site, however, I have to agree that she does indeed have a hidden agenda.
Larque is one of the best teachers i have ever taken. LIke all teachers, she expects you to act like your in college. You will learn lots of material in this class. She is great, and she always helps no matter what. Lots of extra credit.
Laura Larque, she was an amazing teacher to observe, and learn from. She gives out six essays, that includes a lot of notes on each subject discussed. I took her class during summer school in 2013 along with Business Law and it was still the easiest class I have taken to date. She has great since of humor always fun to listen to.
She is the best teacher ever! i learned a lot from her. she takes time to help each student and asks for feedback. she really cares about her students. loved it!!!!!!
Personally think that Larque forgets that she's teaching a History class, NOT and English class. Have to write 5 essays during the summer, two of which are in class timed essays, where you are give 5 different topics before hand and are expected to be able to write a fully polished essay in her 1 and 20 min timeline. Wish I hadn't taken her class.
personally hated this class, wish I had never signed up for this class
Great teacher ! Took as a summer course and I don't regret it one bit ! Has written assignments and reading but are not that bad , and she has a few tricks up her sleeves :)
She is the best teacher i ever took for history. she has this personaty that attracts you to her class and she is very helpful. i learned so much about the native americans and so much more. she is one of the greatest teachers ever!!!!! Take Her!!!!!!!!!!!!
Literally the worst class I have ever attended at the JC. Rambling lectures, a baldfaced agenda coloring every aspect of the lesson, constant use of droning videos instead of actually teaching. Acted like she can't be bothered to really teach or explain anything. just throwing around generalizations and leading questions. garbage class.
I love this professor. She's hilarious and very nice. Her lectures were amazing, not once did I feel bored in her class.
Took her for U.S. history. Ended up learning mostly about latin american history. She gives you the essay topics for tests beforehand, but doesn't tell which ones will be on the test. Make sure you have an A going into the final, it's nothing bad just trust me it's worth it.
Larque is so knowledgable and fun. She doesn't take any BS in her class, give her respect. The textbooks are more like easy to read novels, with interesting content. She gives great lectures and power points. Only homework are chapter summaries from the book which are divided into sections throughout the semester. Great teacher
Ms. Larque is an exceptional teacher. It was very interesting to learn the history of Mesoamerica from the Spanish perspective. I enjoyed the class greatly. Yes, there are several papers to write, they are graded carefully. If you don't qualify for English 1A, don't take the class. You will definitely work for your grade. I will take her again.
Took her history 21 class. Love her great teacher
I took Laura for history 8.1. All i can say is that she is an amazing teacher. I respect her so much. She truly knows her history and is very clear about the topics she talks about. The class is not hard at all. Just have to show up, listen to what she has to say, take notes, do the simple homework assignments and you pass. I would take her again
By far my favorite teacher. Her HIST 21 class was the first class I took & I didnt realize it recommended English 1A and yet I still got a C. She was really understanding and helpful. She does have a thick accent, which may make it harder to understand but shes still easy to follow. Short Slide slide shows, I recommend notes, especially when reading
Larque was an amazing History teacher. She would give lectures with lots of slides and information, so note taking is a must. The textbook was rarely used and her lectures were all I needed to do well on her exams (in class essays). She only had three in class essays and a book review on a book of her choice (you must read the book).
Loved being in this class! She is passionate about the subject, but not the kind of teacher that thinks they know everything. If you miss a day or two and try your hardest there is no reason to get below an A. Like the tag says I would totally take her again! W
Two books to read, one book review (the distance between us - great book!) and a couple essay exams which are straight forward if you pay attention, show up to class and take notes. Great class and even better instructor. If you get the chance to take Laura do it! She is hilarious and actually cares about her students. Love her!
Took Larque's class during the summer. Lecturing style makes the class go by fast and keeps students interested. Conversations in class are engaged and provide extra knowledge to advance in class. She is very sarcastic and makes the lectures hilarious. She has very little homework and tests. I would absolutely take her class again!
Great teacher! I thought since it's summer it will be so much work the reading and papers she assigns. It's really easy and the book is interesting to read (not standard textbook). She's very helpful, funny and so very passionate about history. If you do well in class you can opt out of taking the final.
She's a nice person and she has good lectures. She won't tell you what she went over in class or is going to go over. Even if a good reason for not going is provided. She won't send out her slides. towards the end of the semester she started turning away people who show up late, but still won't tell what to study to keep caught up with the class.
You have to read to be able to do the papers and receive a good grade. She is picky grader. Show up to class, she will make fun of you for not going and ask where you have been in front of everyone. She is funny, but its not for everyone. This isnt an easy A class but she isn't a horrible teacher.
She wasn't a bad teacher so much as she only gives you three chances before the final to get your grade up. She assigned only three essay and gave no homework so unless you did well on the essays, you weren't going to do well in the class. Some information she would ask about would be things that either she didn't talk about and weren't in the text
Do not take her. I have never hated a teacher before, and I hate her. She only gives 3 essay exams and a book review. Biased and nosy. Often the first 15 minutes of class are spent talking about politics, and if you don't participate she gets mad and drags it out longer. Take copious notes, she wants everything about a subject to be in your head.
She's clear on expectations and very knowledgeable about her subject. Make sure to take clear notes, they will help tremendously while preparing for essay exams. She teaches as if she was telling a story, so it's easy to grasp ideas. PARTICIPATE, even if you don't know the answer. 2 exams 1 book report 1 final. Final optional if you have C or up.
Be ready to take lots of notes. She does goes fast on her lectures so recording it, is the best advice I can give you. She gives out 3 essays test and 1 book review which they are not too bad. She also offers some extra credit to help you out. If you follow my advice you will get an A too. Good Luck :)
Many people consider her to be a hard teacher. I won't lie she can be tough but it's because she is very passionate about her subject. She wants you to participate and she will make you participate if the class isn't participating . I strongly suggest that you take her in the summer and really commit to this class if your considering it.
Professor Larque is extremely knowledgeable. Her lectures are inspirational and life changing. She made me appreciate Historical events that I didn't care for prior taking the class. Her grading criteria is clear and she also cares about her students. Just make sure you show up and you participate because she puts effort into her lectures.
She has good lectures and I felt like I learned a lot but she's a really tough really grader. Absolutely 100% does not make any sort of exceptions for late work, even for DRD students. It's either in at the beginning of class or it's a zero. Good teacher but her grading is rough
As a person who has never had a mind for history, Larque showed me the importance of knowing history and how it can always be applied to current events happening now. She made is easy to understand what happened and why. We had 3 in class essays, 2 at home essays, one required book to read, & an essay movie review. That's it. Pay attention in class
She is the best history professor the JC has to offer. Her lectures are clear and informative. She also cares a lot about her student and does her best to help them. She uploads lectures on canvas . I strongly recommend taking a history class with her.
For those that fear falling asleep in history take Larque (her wit and knowledge will keep you alert during lectures). If you take H21 do the readings (her books are all on reserve at the library) it's necessary for the papers and exams. *If you want extra credit ask for it and she might plan a field trip (expect her to outdo the tour guide)
I am a literal 4.0 student, pay attention in class, study, etc. The 1st essay exam I got a C. She is unreasonable, does not clearly define expectations or does not follow them. The way she presents can feel scattered. Take notes on what she is saying AND whats on the slides. She cares about specifics and not about if you generally get the material.
Prof Larque's lectures are detail filled and extensive. However, she only explains things once and expects you to remember them exactly. We were only graded on 3 things, making it basically impossible to raise our grades. Reading the book is so important- it gives background to her lectures. Class sessions are great, but exams are really tough.
Grades history essays like an English teacher. Wasn't familiar with her own curriculum- she based a whole test on a topic that wasn't covered in our book and she didn't realize that when I brought it up.
She is a sweet lady but she will not budge if you suspect some of her historical claims are false. Take her if you love Latin American history, but you might get frustrated with her fuzzy directions over the course of the semester. No homework, but you are going to need to take notes, there are three papers or so, a couple exams, and a project.
Larque is a tough grader. 3 essay exams & expects the history essay to be well written like an English Class. Write down what she says in class the slides are online & not as important. Lots of reading but not as heavily tested on versus the lectures. If you are happy with your grade you can opt out of the final. Normal A student but received an B.
She is very funny and does her best to make the class not boring for a history. It is okay to miss a few classes, she is really easy going. She cares about all her students asks us where were we if we missed class and notices when something has changed. I am not a history fan but I would take another class with her.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She is very political with no reason to be, and if you don't agree with her she points you out and drags on the conversation. She can be funny. There are only 2 in-class essays and one book analysis, then the final which is another in-class essay. So she relies heavily on participation. DON'T TAKE HER!
Laura is very funny and engaging. Does in fact give fuzzy and often times confusing or contradictory directions. No homework at all but is very tough on essay exams- grades like an english teacher so be very detail oriented. She's very easy going when it comes to lectures but I wouldn't try challenging her on opinions. Overall very intelligent lady
Taking Laura's class was complete delight. She very much helped me to connect with my culture. Laura is a tough grader because she cares and is never afraid to hold people responsible. She makes the lectures more interesting because she is literally hilarious. Do no take this class if you are lazy or just don't care, you will not pass.
Laura is down to earth. Her class is lecture based and interesting. She tells history how it is, sometimes she can be a little old school and when she thinks she is right she wont give it up. I only read the novel and did well on most tests, Tekakis book was useless.
Laura is one of the best professors I have ever had. Very sweet, and kind! But grades only few assignments. I would recommend her to anyone who is ready for some reading. Good luck!
Laura Larqué is my favorite JC professor by far. She's warm and respectful towards her students, even when she jokes around. She's noticeably progressive: history is political, and she doesn't hide that. Although her lectures can mostly stand by themselves, the Takaki textbook is worth reading. No homework, just essay exams and a book review.
I'm typically an A student. I've taken much harder classes than History 21 and somehow I'm receiving the worst grade I've ever gotten at SRJC. She only has 4 assignments due all semester so if you receive a bad grade on one you can kiss an A goodbye. Completely unfair with her grading and very picky. 10/10 would NOT rec!
If you have an opinion on anything, you're automatically wrong. She tells you to give your opinion then acts like it is the dumbest thing she has ever heard. She is rude and is always making inappropriate/embarrassin comments to students. She also only teaches from a poorly made powerpoint and doesn' explain clearly at all. Most inconsiderate prof.
Not graded by many things, A Book review (on a book that had nothing to do with the class), An in class Midterm essay, and a Final, the same way. She would change her slides mid class, as shes teaching, then never post the revised edition. She also changes her mind on questions constantly. She is friendly and fun to listen to though.
I have never had a professor make new slides during class which lowered my option of her. She started the semester making the point that all peoples views are to be respected but I felt that in class she openly would deny students an opportunity to express their views while simultaneously making it clear they were wrong and she was right.
Here the thing with the professor shes quickly to put you down make you feel real stupid when her facts arent up to date shes quickly to assume a lot of a person like me being Hispanic she assumes i could read n write Spanish , she also tends to get off topic 90% of the time she should really ask herself the question should i really be teaching
One 4 page paper do through the semester, no additional homework but reading the textbook and a side book. Test are made up from her lectures provided via canvas to follow along. She requires participation, might get a little side tracked once in while but class is fun with her!
I am an A student and on the midterm in-class essay she gave me the worst grade I have ever received on a paper and when I asked for feedback and how I can do better she told me to work harder with no explanation as to why the bad grade. She only gives 4 assignments for the semester so an A is unattainable if you don't excel on every assignment.
What makes her great is her breadth of knowledge, I feel like I learned so much. What makes her terrible is she is rude through any online correspondence. She isn't rude in the zoom meetings though. She is nit picky with grading papers and gives rude feedback, not constructive. Her online format is confusing.
One of the worst history teachers Ive ever taken. Her instructions are not clear at all. When she critiques your essays she writes rude comments instead of helpful feedback. Would not take again!
I had a difficult time communicating with her, and so did a lot of the other students. Whenever a problem or question would come up , I would email her and her response was always the students were in the wrong. She was blatantly rude, and said I was arguing with her, when the only thing I was doing was asking for help.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. She is very rude through email, when you have a question or unsure about something. There was a lot of missing information on the syllabus and when you asked about it, she said it was there. I did not like her class at all, she makes the students feel inferior.
Laura Larque is easily the most unapproachable professor I have ever had at SRJC. Not only does she cut off students while speaking, she makes it difficult to ask questions during class. Her feedback is extremely rude and not helpful. She creates a toxic learning environment where she laughs at students for genuine questions. Do NOT take her class
One of the worst teachers the JC has. Larque is completely unapproachable and rude when you try to ask questions or for clarification on her confusing assignments. There are no rubrics for her writing assignments so she just randomly assigns you a grade with no explanation as to why you received an A or an F. Terrible teacher
Literally never cites her sources and often spouts misinformation that suits her arguments. Terrible grader, often baselessly accusing you of plagiarism if you write decently. She does not give clear feedback at all! She also is not afraid to call you out in front of the class and shame you for simple mistakes or missing class for any reason.
Okay so here's the thing if you get A's and B's on the five assignments there is during the semester, you'r golden. But if you get a low B or high C on an assignment there is no way you will be able to get an A in the end. Laura is mean and unapproachable especially to the students asking for help. I really hope she reads her reviews and changes.
NOBODY ENJOYED HER CLASS
I'm not one to post anything like this, so this should say a lot. I honestly did not enjoy this class one bit because the professor was not helpful whatsoever. I liked that she had the modules with her recorded lectures, so you can go back at your own pace. Overall, she responds with one word responses through email and only criticizes your work.
Do yourself a favor and read through her bad reviews, it says a lot. I agree 100% with all the students. Worst teacher I've ever encountered in my life, I am not joking, I'm that serious. If I could have dropped I would. I have never encountered someone so unprofessional and inconsiderate, considering the difficulties with online schooling.
Unsurprised by the reviews because Laura is demanding. However, I took her class & 5 other classes & was fine! Participation & attendance matter. Her lectures are recorded, accessible, & thorough. She has clear grading criteria & even demonstrates how to write assignments in class. If you're passionate about learning she's a great teacher!
Despite all the bad reviews she is not a terrible professor. There is no hw for the class and the lectures are to be watched at your own pace. The class is based off attendance and 4-5 papers. The papers are solely based on the recommended textbook (which wasnt used often) and her lectures. Dont include any other outside sources.
The class is very easy. I will say I didn't learn what I expected to learn, besides: THE EUROPEANS!!! She is very biased when teaching, and will usually go on a tangent about Trump. No homework besides two book reports that you have plenty of time to complete. Final was easy, part 1 was a presentation of a cultural aspect, part 2 was a freeresponse
I loved this class. Professor Larque is very intelligent and quick even when asked obscure and convoluted questions. She always reads thoroughly through papers and has a keen eye for mistakes being made, so make sure to put in effort in your written assignments. The lectures were always informative and interesting.
Laura was a great teacher. I learned alot from her. I remember her class and there wasn't very much homework but there sure was enough for you to do. Her classes are lecture heavy but they're recorded so you can go back to something if you spaced out or missed. Really nice teacher but she could be direct. Honestly thats what you want from a teach
Professor grades papers very awkwardly. Asks you to email her the pdf, and then she converts it into a word document which messes up the formatting. It shouldn't be the students fault for her choosing to convert the document. Grade what we submitted, not what you're converting and messing up! She's also unhelpful and rude in terms of feedback.
Be prepared to read 2 books & write book reviews for each. Her feedback can be rude unless you do an excellent job, make sure to write a strong book review & revise it before turning it in, they are worth a lot of points. There are a lot of lengthy lectures to watch & quite a few quizzes. Harsh feedback but she means well. Just try your best.
I'm only halfway through this course and so far I do not recommend anyone take this class. Her lectures and quizzes are very poorly and awkwardly worded, so much that I've missed points on quizzes due to questions not making sense. She somehow "lost" the paper I submitted, despite me just emailing it to her. She also grades pretty arbitrarily.
This class was simple and straightforward; quizzes for each cluster of modules and two essays on book readings. Just take notes on the lectures and fill out the study guides as you go. Sometimes frustrating to follow but if you are also Latino you will understand. I skimmed the books. Good content, I learned stuff that will stick with me!
Ms. Larque was very rude, inconsiderate and not helpful. Her class is very easy to take but she is not very easy to deal with. I was helping other students in class and she reprimanded me. If you are looking for positive supporting teachers she is not one of them.
She's a great professor, very honest; it's an enjoyable class to attend. You are exposed to lots of information and you do need to be able to think critically (as well as be open minded for optimized experience).
Professor Larque is a great teacher who cares about her students. The subject material is taught clearly and is readily available outside of lectures. Wording on quizzes can be confusing, but she is open to corrections. Professor Larque is accepting and supportive, overall I had a great time in this class.
I needed the history class and I switched late in the semester. Much like the other reviews, she is very rude in emails and her quizzes are awkwardly worded. Feedback on my essay was very vague. Overall an unapproachable teacher and I would not take again. That being said I do like the way her modules are set up as you can learn at your own pace.
I really dont like to bad mouth professors because they are human, but I personally wish I wouldve known more about her before I took the class. She gives no homework, your grade is based on the two papers and quizzes. She grades so harsh and has too high of standards. Her quizzes are worded poorly and in a weird format. She is also kind of rude.
I enjoyed taking this class, fun to learn about chicano/latino history. There is two essays for two reads you have to read, they aren't that hard if you actually read the book and answer the questions she asks. One flaw I would say is that she doesn't announce there is a quiz so you'll have to be checking canvas to see it. Overall funny professor!!
Y'all I am only in the second week of her class and I hate it. Lots of lectures, she is very rude, the recorded lectures are hard to follow because she has a HEAVY accent. I registered late! Please you guys wish me luck and NEVER take this course unless you're s*icidal okay? Like there's so much reading, but about 6 assignments the whole semester.
Professor Larque takes time and puts in an immense amount of effort in her lectures. Your grade will be based on 6 assignments: 2 book reviews and 4 quizzes. While it doesn't seem like a heavy workload, taking notes from the modules will make a major difference with the quizzes and start on the two books as soon as possible.
I took an online class, and it was clear she's not well versed with tech. The quizzes were frequently messed up, however, she always compensated by giving extra points. Despite these hurdles, her lectures, while online, were second to none in passion and political analysis. I got the impression that the experience would be much better in person.
Classes were very lecture heavy, but taking notes on any slides was impossible. She either sped through them too fast or way way way too slow. Her tests were impossible, containing questions about info you will not find anywhere on the course info. She also accused me of using ai and then was extremely rude to me when I attempted to fight back.
Professor Larque's HIST21 class is rigorous but rewarding. While her quizzes can be tricky, the lectures are informative. Using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helped me ace the papers.
