She is general is a great lady and teacher. The online quizzes are mostly all on quilt and you have three chances to pass them, but they are the only reason I'm not failing the class. Exams are way too difficult and specific. I have yet to pass one and ended up dropping. Everything about the class is fine for a biology class, but the exams
tests are very hard. lectures are unclear sometimes
This class is ridiculous for an intro to biology class. She made her test so specific and difficult that the average was either a D or C each test. Her online quizzes are the only thing that allowed me to keep a solid C average. I would study weeks and weeks in preparation for the tests to only get a C and in one instance a D. Don't take this class
Dr. Luque is a great teacher and lecturer! She was very clear in her explanation and if you had difficulty understanding a topic, she was always available to ask questions. Very understand about life circumstances and a genuinely great person. Would take again.
Dr. Luque is such a solid professor. I rated her as being pretty hard because that is simply the nature of intro bio. However, she does a great job at lecturing and has a very organized layout for each day. She is also super easy to talk to during office hours and for advising. Definitely take her if you can.
Harsh rating on easiness because it's Biology, nothing against Luque. There's a TON of material and exams are very challenging, a lot of the questions are conceptual and involve critical thinking which is tough. She is a very sweet lady! Very welcoming and easy to talk to. Good lectures, pretty easy to understand. Get ready to work hard for a B.
Intro Bio is tough, and Dr. Luque makes it interesting and fun! The class is difficult, don't get me wrong, but she is a great professor that wants to help you do well even in a class of 150, always enjoyed her lectures. Tests aren't horrible, participation/the online homework are good grade boosters, but the final is cumulative and very difficult.
She really knows her stuff but there's just so much that it's overwhelming. You need the textbook. She gives a ton of small assignments that help your grade a little - a little - but her quizzes are much harder than the lecture material. Must read and pay attention to detail or you will fail.
Don't take her if you want to have a relaxed freshman year at TCU. She makes it seem impossible to just be diligent and get good grades. The tests were extremely intricate and tricky. My year, 60% got F, and only 10 got A. I got 77 first exam and 52 second exam. Then I dropped it. But right pass deadlight, she curved everyone 10 points.
Luque's class is HARD. Her lectures are clear (she's an amazing teacher) but be prepared for the exams to come from out of left field. They are extremely difficult, especially for an entry level introduction class. You'll come out the other side knowing way more than you should, which isn't a bad thing! READ THE TEXTBOOK
Difficult class but doable if you actually study. Homework every single night, weekly quizzes, tests are difficult. She expects you to know things. Kind of rude in class but is so helpful in office hours. One of the best professors because if you do as told you will know Biology like the back of your hand. def recommend. Dropped bc Ap cred.
Luque is very smart and engaging and her lectures are helpful. But, I recommend not taking it unless you have to due to the fact that her tests are incredibly difficult. She's very kind and willing to talk to you, but take another class instead for your NSC credit - it will save you. Overall, she's sweet - but don't take this.
Unless you've taken lots of Bio, you'll have to put a lot of effort in to do well. Her tests are mostly application problems of what's being taught so you must know it well. I HIGHLY recommend to read the textbook before hearing the lecture in class (brought me up from a D to a B+). Online homework 6 days a week. She is super nice though
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. It can be doable if you focus your entire life to it, and then you might get a B in the class. Homework 6 days a week and online quizzes every single week. Very sassy in and comes across as really mean, but if you ever talk with her outside of class she is actually really nice.
SUPER difficult course, but Luque is an amazingly knowledgable professor. If you have 15-20+ hours a week available to study for this class and work hard, you can do well in her class. She is brilliant but also a little sassy.
The only reason I said i wouldnt retake is because her tests are absurdly difficult. she's a wonderful professor who really cares, but Ive gone into tests knowing the material back and forth and came out with a D. just doesnt add up. When you take her, be aware that you WILL have to work your butt off. Textbook only for online hw assignments
Let's be real pre-med bio is hard. I actually really enjoyed Laura's lectures and found them super interesting but she doesnt know how to write tests for her life. That's the only thing that will get you but it WILL get you. If you put in the effort (there's nightly homework) you can pass for sure. Also warning: YOU WILL LEARN TO HATE MINDTAP
This intro bio class was the worst. I would study for two or three weeks for exams and knew the material inside and out but her exams were full of trick questions and you had to figure out which answer she wanted. I got a C, F, and a D on the first three exams so i dropped it even though I actually knew the material. On the one F exam 60% failed it
Her test are impossible. I would study every night and would fail every time. The test class averages are usually below 50. Her written english is rather hard to interpret which makes it harder than it already is. She does not want you to succeed and made that very clear to me when I met her one one one. She is smart lady but not teacher material.
$80 for an online subscription to Mindtap which you will have a daily assignment, along with a quiz due every Sunday. If something goes wrong with mindtap and u miss an assignment bc of it, she will only say to restart ur computer & if that doesnt fix it then tough luck. 4 tests, all multiple choice. the mindtap assignments will help. reading wont
Worst professor (hate to even call her a professor) at TCU!! So mean and makes the class impossible!!! I am a chancellor scholar and know what it means to study and learn material. I would study for weeks, never missed class, did all of the MindTap assignments and pulled a C in the class. Ridiculous! Her tests are almost impossible! Don't take her
Not clear during lecture, barely accessible outside the classroom, kind of rude/condescending when you ask her questions. I had an A in cell bio (first A in a biology class) until her second test. On her first one I got an A, on the second one I plummeted to a C-. No consistency in her exams even though I studied the same way. Good luck...
I love this woman. She helped me get into med school and so much more in life. She's incredibly smart, and determined to help her students. But don't get wrong, you're going to have to work. She teaches some of the hardest subjects and expects nothing but the best from her students. Only take her class if you're serious about learning
This class can be really overwhelming, especially if you're taking it as a freshman- which many do. Expect to read a lot and still get confused in lecture sometimes. She's pretty good about answering questions in and outside of class, but the exams are crazy hard.
Dr. Luque is a great teacher, seriously. BUT, this class is almost impossible. The lectures are pretty easy to follow, and the mind tap assignments and quizzes are understandable, but the test's are AWFUL.. I spent hours studying (upwards of 20) hired a private tutor, went to the open tutoring, but I still have a D in the class. Not worth it.
She is literally the worst professor at TCU. I was able to pass every other science class except hers which makes no sense. Her test are so hard no matter how much you study. The answer choices are basically all the same but one is slightly better than the other. Avoid her, her class, take bio somewhere else until TCU lets her go
If you have to take her, here are my tips. Sit at the front and pay attention. Do not, for the love of good, let your phone or computer make a noise. Tests are lecture based, textbook is good for reiterating information. Make an appointment with her before the test to ask questions, she is very kind 1 on 1. Study EVERY day. And, you'll get a C...
Lectures were relevant to the tests and interesting. I recommend getting Campbell Biology regardless of what the syllabus states. I think she is more comfortable drawing from Campbell material and her quizzes reflect that. Answers questions, emails, seems caring. Also intimidating and demands respect. Great professor in my opinion. Study!!!!
Dr. Luque has VERY hard exams, even if you study. 4th exam easiest. 3rd exam hardest. MindTap is a joke, literally all you need the book for. All based on lecture and notes but you have clicker points so you have to attend. Her exams are hell and very abstract. Don't take this if you're not a science major...
I would study for hours every night, listen to every lecture and read every chapter in the book and always go in for tutoring. It didn't help at all. People smarter than I am did worse and unless you are prepared for a lot of all nighters then don't even bother taking this class because it will suck the life out of you.
This class is extremely difficult. It requires constant studying, even if there isn't a test coming up. Despite what some say, I think Dr. Luque is a brilliant professor. With the right mindset, I think passing is more than possible. If you struggle, try taking it your sophomore year.
Dr. Luque is a great person. She is really nice and really wants her students to do well. That being said, this class is by no means easy. Do not be deceived by the time between exams. Study often and daily because the lectures are heavy in content. Second exam on Metabolism is the hardest. Use office hours, especially before the exam.
My biggest complaint is that her office hours are very limited. She is a very knowledgable, although she can be sassy sometimes, she is usually very nice and helpful in office hours. Tests are rather tricky but are not impossible. Don't obsess over reading and MindTap (only read for further clarification); study the past quizzes and her lectures.
Tons of material and tests are tough- it's her confusing wording and answers that make it so difficult. She can seem condescending in lecture but is pretty nice outside of class. She says don't memorize but you'll have to memorize a ton for tests. It's hard but definitely possible to make a good grade w/ LOTS of studying and good testing skills.
She is not as hard as everyone makes it sound like. No need to read every chapter but do read if you're not understanding what she's talking about. Go into her office hours and have specific questions ready to ask because she doesn't explain things just because. She usually curves at least 4 but don't depend on it.
Go to office hours! Pay attention during class, she'll call you out if you're on your phone the whole time. Be prepared to get an F on at least one test.
nice professor, but you will cry in this class
Professor Luque is not mean, but very strict. She serves as a weed-out teacher to see which students can handle the work-load of Pre-Med, and is very good at it! She has informative lectures, and requires lots of reading. For first-year Bio/Chem/Biochem students, she is a requirement. Get to know her in office hours, and she will help you!
Very difficult class and you must study a ridiculous amount for every test. Re-listen to all lectures because every question is talked about in class, but don't bother reading. Go to the review sessions and be prepared for all-nighters before exams.
Dr. Luque is such a sweet professor and extremely knowledgeable and helpful! Intro Bio is incredibly difficult by design at TCU, so be prepared to study like crazy. I purchased a second textbook from a different publisher/author to make sure I hit the material from a different angle. I would take her again in a heartbeat (for another class!)
Dr. Luque is one of the most personable professor's I have ever had, but she also teaches one of the hardest subjects I've ever taken. That being said, she expects a lot out of her students. She is a weed out professor and that isn't a bad thing; she is helping figure out if you are actually passionate about the path you are pursuing.
Dr. Luque is so sweet, and she really cares about her student's success. Biology is a difficult class, but if you go to class, and don't study the night before a test, you can definitely be successful. I never really used my book, but you need to purchase an online access code for the online text book because there are many activities done online.
I like luque, she clearly cares about her students but this class is truly insane. It is so clearly a class meant to push pre med kids out of the program. If you take Bio 1 with her you will spend your whole first semester in tears and not enjoying TCU one bit. Never miss one day of studying. It will set you back more than you can believe.
The most unfair class I have ever taken. She doesn't even make her own exam questions. Clearly a weed-out class. All I can say is good luck.
The exams are extremely difficult. I would always go in feeling prepared, but the exam questions are confusing and it is hard to make an A. She does not mention the curve until the very end of the semester. She is kind in office hours. Get ready to study a TON and do not expect an A.
Dr. Luque can be strict but she really cares for her students. I thought she was a great teacher but this class was HARD. I studied for weeks for the tests and normally got in the B range. Beware of the 2nd Metabolism test- it killed my grade. 3 point curve.
This class is hard, but not as impossible as people make it out to be. Don't study the textbook for the tests because all of the content comes from lecture. If you know the content covered in the lectures backwards and forwards you should do fine. Your grade is almost entirely dependent on your test grades so make sure to study.
Something I wish I would have known: don't waste time reading the textbook. Go over the slides MULTIPLE TIMES before each test and pay attention in lecture. Also, go to the free tutoring that is offered!!! Luque is a great person, but her course is very challenging. It is a weed out course, so beware.
Professor Luque has been one of the best professors I have ever taken, She will go out of her way to make sure you understand the material as long as you are putting effort on it. make sure you read her syllabus! Your attendance matters, if you skip a class you will fall behind. She cares about her students, would totally take her again!
I was a straight a student in high school with all AP credits and I barely passed her class. I'd wanted to be a doctor for years until her class. I studied at least 10 hours for each exam and 40 hours for the final. Sweet person but she also killed my dreams. Premed kids: take more than 13 hrs even though you get told differently at orientation.
I got a 3 on AP Bio and an A in this class, so the two aren't related. Don't read the book, study her lectures (recorded) WORD FOR WORD. Understand every part of what she says and why, be able to write it out for yourself from memory. This class is a test of how committed you are to remembering the little details not how smart you are.
definitely a weed out class for pre-med kids! very sarcastic with her answers but very willing to answer any question and help as much as she can. lectures are recorded and posted online but attendance is mandatory for daily grades! book is not used, everything you need to know is in her lectures. biggest tip:STUDY THE MATERIAL AFTER EVER LECTURE
So basically if your looking for any type of social life this is not the class for you. I went in full force while also wanting to have a good experience in college and unless you have time to study for this class for 2-3 hours every day and also be able to manage other classes, you will not get upwards of a B. If you do take it, GO TO OFFICE HOURS
Best Professor I have ever had. By attending office hours she will not only go out of her way to help you understand the material discussed in lecture but she will learn your name immediately and constantly give advice on how to study more effectively. Don't get me wrong she makes the class very challenging which isn't a bad thing. Study everyday.
Dr. Luque may come off as harsh, but she is actually an amazing person who really cares about her students. Put forth the effort and she'll put in the time to help you. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. They'll help you learn material you didn't realize you didn't know and get to know her better. Her tests are definitely hard, so find your way to study early!
Okay listen any incoming pre med that is serious about being a doctor you will have to put in more work than the vast majority of other college students. Im convinced anybody is capable of getting an A in this class IF you are willing to truly work for it (and i mean really work). Listen to the recorded lectures after class and know them by heart
This class was the hardest thing ever when I first took it. I had to drop it and retake, but I ended up getting an A. It was the most useful class I've taken thus far, because it made me learn how to study and it worked. Study early (like right after lecture) and keep reviewing. If you're a freshman pre-med, don't give up. Keep trying!
Dr. Luque truly cares about her students and is willing to help. She is very intimidating in lecture, but much nicer in office hours. The class content was extremely hard, and I got an A in AP Bio. The class content was killer, and only graded of 4 tests given during the semester. If you're a bio major, take Luque because she be great help
This is now my second time taking Bio I, and I still hate it. RE-LISTEN TO LECTURES TO STUDY! The class is incredibly hard and the test questions are meant to trick you. If you go to her office hours she will love you. Don't ask obvious questions during lecture or she will roast you. She is extremely unforgiving and is often malicious in email.
Dr. Luque cares about her students but expects the most. This was my second time taking the class and still never studied more in my life. Took it after ochem which helped. Don't take it with any other hard classes as studying and memorization is a lot. She does drop a lot of the lowest things, but staying above average on exams is most important.
You've never studied hard until you've taken this class, it truly makes you feel like you know nothing. Extremely intimidating person but is really nice at her office hours, her tests and quizzes are insanely detailed and if you don't put in the work super early on in the course, you will not be able to recover. Go to class and ASK QUESTIONS!!
Dr. Luque has been the worst professor I have ever had. Her questions on tests and exams are not only confusing and have grammar issues, but the questions are meant to trick and confuse you. She thinks you'll understand something after she says it only one time and gives you attitude if you ask a question during lecture. She is absolutely horrible.
Have a question during lecture? Don't ask. She will just try to make you look stupid in front of the class by asking you another question instead of answering your original question.
This is a weed out class. Don't take endless you're 100% committed to study, read, ask questions, and apply the learning. You will be pushed. Dr. Luque is very serious about retaining the information and applying it to every quiz and exam. She can be very harsh and will make you feel like you are inadequate, but ultimately wants you to learn.
Luque teaches a VERY tough class. That being said she is incredibly kind and truly cares about her students. She makes her rules and expectations clear in the syllabus, don't try to challenge them. Try to NEVER miss class and going to office hours and asking questions will be your best friend. She is very intimidating the first week but is amazing
I have never felt so defeated until taking this class. I am quite literally TERRIFIED to ask questions in class and don't even get me started on answering her questions. almost 100% of your grade is based off of the 5 tests which are stupid hard. I have put more hours into this class and consistently do not see any progress. SOS AVOID HER!!!
If you have any confidence, she will crush it. I never asked a single question because she is terrifying, after observing her responses to others and how she made them look stupid. I studied so hard for her exams but they are extremely hard. If youre a bio major dont give up on bio because of her class.
I transferred here with a 4.0 and her class completely crushed my GPA. She makes it difficult to get any accommodations and is extremely rude about personal situations. Her goal is to make sure you're dropping her class and she brags about how poorly her students do. If you don't eat, breathe, and sleep biology you're not going to pass.
This class is a weed out class, so it may seem harder than most. Dr. Luque in lecture can be very intimidating, but she is very nice and approachable during office hours. She doesn't have many office hours, so do take advantage of them. She expects you to ask questions in lecture, so even if its clarifying something, DO IT!
This class will push you to your limits. The amount of learning is insane however Dr. Luque will help you through every step as long as you ask. Tutoring and office hours should be used weekly so you stay on top of material and never fall behind. This is a weeding course and Bio 2 will be way easier.
I never write reviews for professors but Dr. Luque does not deserve to be a professor. She deserves to be fired. She tells you to ask questions but does not answer them and calls you stupid for not understanding. She refused to follow accommodations. TCU needs to fire her or they will lose students! She is one scary professor and doesn’t care!
Is a good prof but expects a lot. 5 exams (20 ?s total mixed with 1 essay, a few fill in black & rest multi )&12 quizzes (both lockdown & webcam) 1 research paper final is cumulative. If u follow along in class & take good notes u will succeed. At end of each PP she ask can u do this & has 5-10 ?s about that lecture which is used for the exam
Dr. Luque is an amazing professor who gives students a challenge but also gives them all tools for success. If you are prepared before lectures, her lectures are extremely helpful and you will learn a lot over the semester. This class is very difficult, but so is the entire pre-med track; Dr. Luque will teach you so much and you'll learn fast.
Confidence shredder
I took Luque my 1st semester and its 100% a weedout class. I had to drop this class bc I had a low F by the drop date. If youre taking both Chem and Bio at the same time DROP BIO! I was advised to drop Chem and stay in Bioso I didonly to drop Bio too bc I was failing. Advisors DONT help one bit! Taking her class somewhere else. DONT GIVE UP!
Expects you to learn everything the day of and if you ask a question she will ask you the same question or if you get it wrong she makes you feel dumb and embarrassed. Exams and quizzes are very wordy and are meant to throw you off guard. She is great at teaching the class but teaches at a very fast pace.
If you cant does multiple-choice, that's all her course is. I failed the first 2 exams and decided to drop out from taking 3 stem courses. Taking this class elsewhere. If you don't know the material perfectly memorized, you won't succeed. I went to office hrs every time offered and still got bad grades, she is rude if you call her out on anything.
Dr. Luque is obnoxiously challenging. She will smash your confidence into a million pieces, which is awful since she teaches a beginner biology course. Her exams and quizzes are multiple online choices, and you can only see one question at a time without going back. I was failing her class, dropped and will be taking it elsewhere over the summer.
Weed out class, switched my major after this, don't ask questions in this class...
I withdrew from this class...I even changed my major! Though it wasn't because of the class. This class is difficult. Be prepared to read. Please pay attention to lectures and DON'T AVOID office hours!!! A big portion of the class are exams, then follow quizzes, homework, and participation. Dr. Luque is nice, but sometimes would give smart remarks.
This is 100% a weed-out course. If you don't live, eat, and breathe biology you are going to fail. The quizzes aren't horrible but the tests are BRUTAL and makeup 85% of your grade. Dr. Luque is extremely intelligent and if you aren't on the same level as her you will feel incredibly stupid for asking any questions. SOS avoid at all costs!!!
Do not take her class in your first semester of college because you will struggle and need to learn how to study. As a person, she is super sweet, but make sure never to take pictures in her class or she will get furious. Her exams are very difficult and she expects you to know every detail. If you don't sleep next to your textbook you won't pass.
The lectures may seem simple enough to understand, but always read the textbook as she will ask specific questions on quizzes and tests that won't always come from the PowerPoints. And make sure your phone is silent and away, because she WILL call you out on it in lectures. Overall this is a weed-out course so be prepared to work for your major.
Dr Luque explains complex topics well and has weekly quizzes to keep you up to date with content. She is easily accessible outside of class, so I highly recommend going because hearing the answers to both your questions as well as those of others boosts your content knowledge. Her exams are extremely in depth compared to her quizzes so be ready.
Dr. Luque is very degrading. She will cut you off when asking questions. If we do not remember something from the lecture before, cshe sits there and says "You should know this. we just talked about it." The class is very time-consuming we have an assignment every day except for Saturdays and for me personally, I have to relisten to her lectures.
Professor Luque is so harsh at times. If an emergency happens, she gets upset with you and makes you feel dumb for asking for help.
In this class be prepared to work your butt off, if you aren't the best at biology. Dr. Luque can be super rude but also can be nice, you just need to respect her and ask her questions if you have them. Good luck
Dr. Luque, although a challenging professor, ultimately pushes you to learn biology extremely in-depth. The course requires alot of outside practice and work, however, if you put in the work you will understand the subject in much greater detail. She sets you up for success, however, is challenging.
She is tough, but you will learn the material. The tests are on another level of difficult, so fair warning. She has a great accent haha!
Professor Luque started out nice but after the first test she started being super annoyed with students. she isnt nice over email, her tests are WAY harder than anything else she gives you. i personally will not take her again but i also have heard lots of people love her.
Make sure you pay attention and take notes on the lectures. Her tests are based off of the stuff she teaches in class and less on the textbook.
Words her tests so weird that no matter what you study you will do bad. Avoid! And she is so mean during lectures like for what
Dr. Luque's Unity and Cells class was VERY difficult and time-consuming. I changed my major because of this class. Dr. Luque is very knowledgeable and a great teacher, but she can be condescending sometimes. If you are taking this class, be prepared to read and study every day and attend office hours. Exams are worth 85% of your grade. Good luck!
Hardest class I've taken. Dr. Luque's lectures are good, but you will question your existence during the exams--they are EXTREMELY difficult. If you think you know something well, you don't. Definitely go to office hours, even if you think you know what you're doing (because you most likely don't). Class was only curved by a whopping 0.5 points..
Luques unity and cells was very hard. Exams had very detailed questions and were worded to trick you. Attending lectures is a must if you want to do good. There were a lot of mindtap assignments and quizzes but she gave a good amount of drops. Her class made me rethink my career many times but she is a great professor that wants to see you succeed.
I think a lot of the negative reviews come from angry freshmen who didn't do well in her intro bio class. Luque teaches an extremely difficult class that will be a shock to a lot of people going into the pre-med track. This is why it's a weed out--not everyone can be great. However, she is so insanely smart and helpful. Just go to office hours!
Some say that Luque is mean but those people haven't spoken to her for help. She is so sweet. Luque is so smart and breaks down very hard topics that require LOTS OF STUDYING. Her tests will test your knowledge but it's only preparing you for what is to come. You can't want to be pre-med and then complain about a weed out like duh it'll hard.
Unfortunately, you need this course to continue with the pre-med track. She was very condescending in the classroom and during office hours. During office hours, she rushed explanations. I've seen many students change their major, cry because of her class or just her attitude towards them, and even go as far as withdrawing from the university.
Dr. Luque is a bit of a tough love professor but she is nice and tells you what you need to know for exams. Her class is difficult but it is all memorization so it comes down to how much effort you are willing to put in. She also drops the lowest assignments of each category which tremendously helps grades.
GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She can be very intimidating, but her class is interesting and makes you learn. She cares about students but will not put up with bs. Study constantly and you will feel like you learned something, even if youre grade isn't the highest. Don't be upset by low test scores, her tests are designed to challenge you.
I have a lot of respect for Dr. Luque, she is very smart and caring towards her students. That doesn't mean she can't be condescending at times, but she truly cares. I was struggling at first in her Unity course, but going to her office hours made the most change in my grade. Don't be discouraged and don't compare yourself to others, don't give up!
Good luck. That is all I have to say
Dr. Luque is an amazing professor, most freshman struggle with her course because they might expect an easy way to navigate biology instead of truly knowing what is expected as a pre-health student. Her exams are difficult and tricky but each student needs to find their own strengths and weakness. Listen to all her recorded lectures after class!
Dr. Luque is an excellent lecturer. Her learning/time-management material on D2L is liquid gold! Her major downfall is her attitude/emotional instability/superiority complex, which ruins the course. She can be dry/condescending in class/over email and is a ticking time bomb over literally any accidental irritant. Life is too short to stay so angry.
It is obvious that Dr. Luque is passionate about what she teaches, and I have a lot of respect for her. However, she is extremely condescending towards students and makes it hard to want to ask questions in class. She is great in office hours, but not in a lecture setting. Not a big fan of her teaching style, but se is very intelligent.Good luck...
She is very condescending and answers your question with a question or says "you should know that". She words questions a little tricky and half of the exam is Demarest (lab) which are easier. Overall not the worst class I've taken but could be better.
The tests are hard but lecture isn't mandatory. I made d on all three exam including the final and finished with an a from lab work. Lab attendance is mandatory
This summer class for STEM Scholars has daily quizzes, and weekly exams, which require very IN-DEPTH and THOROUGH answers. The key to excelling in this class is to practice writing each key concept on the exam with at least 4-5 sentences, with even the simplest definition being 2-3 sentences. Put in the work, leave the rest to God, you'll be ok!
I wish Dr. Luque had her own style of teaching plans for cell but instead it was a copy and paste of Dr. Lakoduk's unit plans.
Dr. Luque is one of a kind. She is very smart but also extremely difficult. She is not very accessible outside of class, aside from her 2 hour office hours (so it really stinks if you can't make those). Luckily this class was graded on a curve so I was able to pull a B by making C's on every exam including the final. Good luck !!!!!
Dr. Luque's class is challenging, but going to office hours and using tools like Unstuck ai can make a big difference. The exams are tough, so consistent studying is key. With effort, you can succeed in this class.
Although Dr.Luque is very knowledgeable, She is very condescending in and out of class, laughs at students questions, and is not very kind or patient to students who were sick/had an emergency and had to miss class. Her class is hard but Im sure helpful on pre-med track - I HIGHLY suggest taking a different professor.
Even though Dr. Luque's class was really tough, she was an amazing professor who knew how to explain things in a way that made sense. She pushed me to do my best and helped me improve my study skills, which made a big difference in how I approach school now.
DO NOT take Unity your first semester. It's very chemistry-heavy, and without a strong foundation, you'll struggle. Take Diversity (book heavy but easier) and Chem 1 first to build study skills and a chem foundation. She is very sassy when answering questions, and the tests are extremely difficult. You will have to study like you never have before.
Luque only did the lecture portion, but most of this class is in a lab with a TA. The class is structured oddly, with the lecture being on a Friday, even though it makes more sense for it to be on Monday. Lecture knowledge is important, but she isn't very entertaining, and it's hard to stay focused during them. Exams are tricky but are online.
Dr. Luque was amazing and made my first semester at TCU genuinely enjoyable. Her office hours fill up quickly, but if you send her an email, she's very flexible and will work with you to find another time to meet. My only complaint is that grading can take a while, but aside from that, she's awesome, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable.
Her quizzes are very difficult. Homework is every day of the week, a connect assignment before and after the lecture. She goes over topics like it is just a review for her, and is very condescending when asking her questions. She makes you feel stupid when you get something wrong. I would not take her again!
Test questions are overall complicated for no reason, even if you study and know the curriculum you may fail the exam. Get ready for lots of busy work outside of class with short completion windows.
She made the class really hard and was condescending to any student who was confused. Do NOT take Unity in your first semester. The tests are nothing like the material in class, and prepare to spend weeks studying.
For both Unity and her Intro Lab she is extremely hard to follow. She is so intelligent in the field of Biology that unless you already have a good biology foundation and also love biology it will be very hard to learn anything from her. When you ask a question she is highly condescending or will laugh at you and then give a useless response.
She is sometimes very hard to follow in her lectures and many times the lectures and even practice problems can be nothing like the exams/quizzes. Pre and Post Lecture assignments are due every day online and the grading is based almost entirely on the few exams and a small amount on the weekly quizzes. One of the most difficult classes.
guys please do not take Unity class for your first semester at TCU. I was super depressed the whole semester for this course. It was super hard. lecture are super heavy, but the exams are different. Dr. Luque is smart, but really hard to follow if you are not really good at Biol. grades mostly depend on tests. be prepared to cry and study.
