puts more into test than, letucre
Dr. Madson is a wonderful teacher. I have had several classes with her and would take more if she were teaching them. Some students find her tests difficult because they are more applied then simply regurgitating material gathered from book/lecture mater
Biggest complaint is the tests had questions that were not emphasized during lecture or the book.
Dr. Madson is wonderful. Sure, if she's tough it's because she expects a lot out of us. She makes me want to work harder.
she handled a class of over 200 students flawlessly
Tests consisted of questions not in lecture, lab, or in the book. Confusing labs seemed irrelavent to material.
She was crazy. And difficult. Nuff said.
not enough emphasis on what would be covered on the test
She was not nice and gave me a bad grade. Thanks miss Madson. You fd up my scholarship. Now I have to work my ass off to make enough money to pay for school.
She was nice and all, but her RATS were dumb. It is hard to learn like that, and yes she does tend to mess up scholarships. My GPA was high, and I still failed the dumb class. I will never take a class with her.
Dr. Madson is an excellent professor, I've taken three courses from her & they get better each time. She is a welcome addition to NMSU.
Interesting subject. Lots of unnecessary busy work. Wouldn't take for an easy elective because there is a lot of work!
lots of homework/group work. not afraid to say tabboo things during lecture and is very entertaining. you will fail the RATS if you don't read the chapters.
I don't think anybody likes her. She pretends to be nice, but then she gives bad grades. She is a hater.
Stupid ****. Is there anyone that actually likes her. I wish she would not teach psychology. She needs to get married already.
Dr Madson challenges the collective classes minds. I appreciate the amount of information and knowledge she has to offer. If her classes seem hard to you...it's because she's actually making you think (God forbid!)

Very interesting Ms. Madson was! Maybe it was just the boys in the class too that motivated me to go...oh well, either way she was a pretty good teacher and had an interesting way of presenting the class work. The group posters were probably the most renovating and funnest part.
Dr. Madson is a wonderful teacher, but her classes are challenging - she will make you think. Looking at the negative comments about her makes me realize how many people aren't willing to learn - she's not a "hater" or "stupid" just because in her class you earn a grade, she doesn't give it to you.
Madson is the bomb, I love how she yells like an animal at 9am to get your attention.

The team idea is....okay. The RATs would be easier if she would cover the material before them rather than after. Other than that, the class is too fast paced and gats confusing.

blah!!!
I hated the group work but the information was mind blowing!
Nothing like a barage of inappropriate jokes to wake you up on Monday morning! So much cool info, and Dr. Madson makes it even more interesting with stories and examples. She lets her political affiliation control some of her statements, but it's not too bad. The labs suck.
I think she was hilarious and her examples of concepts were very relevant and helpful in understanding the material. She doesn't seem to be super friendly, but she's energetic and knowledgeable about her field. She has a relaxed, fun way of teaching.
She is hilarious but only seems outgoing and friendly when lecturing. Tough exams but awesome class.
teams suck. why can't she lecture and let me learn something?
Kept class interesting.
very poor confusing class
Nice enough lady, but bad teacher. Take a different class with a different teacher for your psych credit. All the class consists of is pointless worksheets. Its a group oriented class, so if your class mates don't show, or haven't read up on the material, or are just plain stupid in general, plan on watching your grade plummet. She is big on the gr
Thank god not all classes in college are as useless as this one. If they were, then I would never have attended college. This class is useless. All you do is pointless group assignments. If all your looking for is an easy A then this class is the one to take. Otherwise, Get OUT!!
This class was an easy "A" and I learned nothing lol. Take it!
Funny!
This is a group oriented class, as well as somewhat of an easy A, yet hard at the same time. To get an A you only have to get an 85, so you figure it out. If you don't like groups don't take this class.
We didnt really do anything. Group oriented. It was an easy A. Loved it! Take it for a prerequisite. Loved her, she is hilarious.
Fascinating teaching style. Comes off as crazy but is really very down to earth. Keeps class attention and lectures well (if a bit odd) but the class focuses on group work. Daily quizzes make reading a must. Theres a lot of minor work that never really gets looked at closely but it all adds up so you just have to go to class and do it.
She's funny:] I'm a psych major, but I learned a lot through this class:] everything's done in groups and it's not a hard class. The grading scale's different, so an A is 85-86. You just have to do the readings and show up to class
Great teacher! She seems a little crazy at first, but she keeps class fun. VERY group oriented, so if you don't like team activities I wouldn't take the class. But, you get to rate your teammates, so if they do a bad job they pay for it. Great class.
If you like teachers who are funny and great at what they do then this class with Dr. Madson is perfect for you!!I personally am not a group person or a text book person, but Dr.Madson teaches very well and will do her best to teach in a way so that everyone is learning. The group can be a bit tedious but it will grow on you.Great professor!!:)
Shes a funny and smart profesor when it relates to her topic, however she tries to push her political agenda in class. She wrote her own text book, and included a chapter on changing peoples attitudes about climate change. She gave a brief background on the science, and as a pilot I was marveling at how ignorant she was in the field of weather.
The class is easy, but hard at the same time. The reading quizzes are worth 40% and she asks trick questions. You can do the reading but still get a 0 on the quiz. Her grading system is messed up. It's set up so that you'll either get an A or B, or you'll fail. There's no middle ground.
This class is alot of in class work book work in teams. Absolutely everything is in teams and the TA's grade extremely harshly. We get F's on almost every team activity but the activities themselves are easy to complete. Worked my butt off and couldn't get an A.. I'm usually a straight A student.
The class is alright, and you'll have a good grade if you do all your homework, but she is a tough grader sometimes! The only reason that it's hard to get an A sometimes is because some of the team assignments are worth more and since she grades them harder your grade may go down.
This class is so random and useless, has nothing to do with Psychology, she is very unclear on what she wants with her evaluations and marks off when you aren't "clear enough", and the grading system is totally random and makes no sense.
What a terrible experience and unpleasant human being. It's not that difficult to get a B if you just go to class but I 100% suggest just not taking her class. You'll need her outdated self-published $80 workbook, and don't bother asking for a copy of her pdf, she won't give it to you. I wish I had this advice: don't take her classes.
Yes there is a lot of group work, and if your group sucks then, but who says you can't take matters into your own hand and do the work? I was fortunate enough to have a great group -- the class is super easy, there are a lot of assignments, and all the in classmajor ones are with your group. Would totally take another class from her again!
No tests at all in this class, the class is mainly focused around group projects. At the end of each unit there is an extra credit assignment and we go through several different units. She mostly focuses on how happiness affects the human mind and the surrounding environment.
Your class sets up the grading scale at the beginning of term and your grade literally hangs on if this scale is good. Team Activities were mandatory and hard. Her TA's were not always helpful and she would often confuse you more when asked for help. You have to buy the brand new book. Overall this class is ok, but not the best.
Condescending, patronizing, talks at the class like she knows the students better than they know themselves. Wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone.
She makes you work in teams and it is awful.
More assignments than I thought. For the entire class you work with a set group the entire semester and I totally thought I was gonna hate it but I actually made some friends. Not a bad class, I liked it.
Hardly felt like a psychology class. She does not lecture, makes you do group work in class instead. You get no information from her, she relies on other sources to provide it. She made us use her shoddy book. On one section, she focused on the biological effects instead of psychological. Also very unclear at times. Felt like a low HS class.
Worst teacher ever! You won't learn anything in this class, except how to budget. That's right, BUDGET, in a Psychology class!! If you don't like group work don't take this class! Madson also makes you buy her self written "tare out worksheet" book (can't resell) that is outdated and her assignments are unclear and she wont explain anything to you.
Worst class of my 1st semester. There are no tests what so ever, they are replaced by team activities that will KILL your grade! She doesn't lecture, just makes you read the text book, that she wrote, then has you take a 2 question quiz over. Her homework assignments are worth 2-6 points and are barely worth the waste of your time!
This psychology class is not like others as where you read a textbook and learn about the history of psychology and disorders. This class covers more than that from financial subjects to personality subjects. The first half of the semester consists of numerous group projects while the second half consists of writing papers and individual work.
Good personality and knows how to speak to students. Volume of work is ridiculous for a 200 level class. Entire curriculum is based around group work and her self-written book. Completely inflexible with anything and everything. Course focused on "psychology of happy people" but is a huge disappointment. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Waste of your time.
I haven't had this teacher in over a semester and I literally decided to write another review just to warn people against her. The group work is only helpful if you have a good group, otherwise it will ruin your grade. Also, the entire class is set up to where she doesn't actually have to work, she just makes you read her book and figure it out.
This class sucks! Do not take her if you want to learn about psychology. you learn how to budget, and other useless stuff for psychology. She is also the hardest, most confusing, grader she gives you no feedback and pretty much just marks stuff wrong for no reason. Do not take this class if you don't have to! GROUP PROJECTS MAKE UP THE WHOLE CLASS!
She was a very professional teacher, but not specific. Unfortunately, you have team members. If you are not into doing team work I would advise you to not take her class. Also, there are research credits which are things you participate in outside of class for a large amount of points. If you miss the research credits, they will hurt you.
If you are majoring in Psychology then I would recommend you DO NOT take her class. You will learn much more relevant things in your spare time than you will in her class. I can sort of recommend her class to non-psych majors since she basically constructed her class to be interesting to those not interested in psychology. Prepare for a lot of work
Don't get me wrong she is a funny, outgoing, smart woman, but I would never recommend a single course of hers to anyone I know. At one point she told our class to put a HUGE assignment in our folder, to find out the next day the TA didn't want it in the folder, so obviously we got a 0% because it wasn't complete. You learn mild psychology.
This class will literally teach you very little about Psychology. You are assigned into permanent teams early in the semester. Dr. Madson offers very little in the form of instruction and leaves the majority of the teaching and instruction up to her shoddy self published tear out workbook that acts as your textbook. My advice don't take this class.
Dr. Madson is a very funny outgoing teacher and really nice when you ask questions or need help. But be prepared for homework almost every night. Her TA's are tough graders and unless your team is a good hard working team your grade might suffer a bit. The whole class is based off on how to be happy not really other psychology topics.
I enjoyed Ms. Madsons class, yes there is a lot of work but it's actually pretty interesting . The pros are no exams or research papers . Cons are the TA's are not helpful, they are very harsh on grading. Yes, you do have to buy her book in order to get the stuff done. There's a lot of homework in this course so beware . She's not bad :)
She is a tough grader, and there is alot of team work involved. Basically everything is team work. The lectures were good and I felt like I did learn alot from them. There is also alot of reading involved before every chapter.
Great as long as you don't want to learn any basic psychology.
I knew I was gonna dislike the whole course with this instructor from Day 1!
TA's do majority of grading. Textbook is mandatory. Group work makes up over 50% of your grade. Groups are assigned, not chosen. My advice is to not take this class or professor she is an extremely tough grader when she does grade assignments.
Group work constitutes 60-70% of the class. The book is necessary to pass but is horrible. Attendance is also mandatory to pass. Lectures can be interesting but there is little time for class work after lecture is over. Dr. Madson is an extremely difficult grader. Be prepared to read, and have multiple writing assignments done weekly.
She teaches her class based on trying to be different, but it only makes things worse. YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS. Based on group work, attendance, you teach yourself outside of class, quizzes and homework due everyday before class, and huge individual projects that she is never clear about and is a tough grader. I learned NOTHING about psychology.
I thought her class was okay. I liked a lot of the material we learned from her textbooks but there was SO MUCH homework! She is enthusiastic and cool but if you have to take the class with her don't expect an easy A. If you want an A in this class you have to do all your homework and go to every single class.
Laura was a wonderful professor. She had high standards for her students and expected work to be specific and detailed, but she was also inspirational! She answered all questions and never made a student feel ashamed for their curiosity. You will need to buy a new textbook, and go to class - you'll have fun!
If you have any sort of independence or think for yourself, do not take any classes taught by Madson. You'll pay $80 for a book you cannot sell because there are tear-out pages, and you'll be scrambling to complete busy-work all semester. She is unprofessional and rude. Even the worst situations will not excuse late work. You've been warned.
You are put into groups the first day of class and remain in those groups throughout the semester. Your final grade is group-based. You have to buy an 84 dollar book that you cant sell back because its all tear out worksheets. She is very scatter-brain. She teaches on other things rather than psychology based material. I wouldn't recommend.
This class is very entertaining she is a great instructor. She does give a lot of homework and reading her textbook is a must. The homework is based on the book and its content. She is hilarious. Her class is not very difficult it's all based on your commitment on doing the homework as well as the research credits. No final. Pure Group Projects.
Good professor just a lot of work especially if you get put in a bad team.
Dr. Madson is one of the best professors! I really enjoyed her class. There was plenty of work to do but you are only graded on 3 questions. The class consists of team-work and I actually had pretty good teammates. If you miss class you won't pass. The book needs to be purchased, and you cannot rent it.
I really did not like this class. You are forced to work in teams, and you do not learn anything. DO NOT TAKE HER! there are many more professors in campus that can teach you better. She grades really hard and does not teach you anything. If your team does not read for the lecture you will not get a good grade.
Don't take her class. You get stuck in a group all semester long and she is an extremely hard grader which can really hurt you with the group projects. She also isn't flexible on late work and doesn't help when you ask for it.
Unless you wanna talk about the fact that chlorine turns her on (yes, she discussed this with us during class) don't take her class. She isn't always specific with instructions and when you ask she acts like you're an idiot. The book you have to buy is written by her and doesn't teach anything, much like her. Avoid at all costs if possible.
If you do not go to class, you will not pass. She allows ZERO make up work or anything and does not budge to help anyone, even student athletes. I had to miss class because of my sport and she said I could do everything before but never after and there was soooo much stuff to do before.
Avoid at all costs!!! You learn almost nothing about psychology and you have to teach yourself from her self-written textbook full of pointless busy work. You get put into groups that will be responsible for the majority of your grade so you're out of luck if they suck. The class is structured so badly that you do 80% of the work in the last month.
She is a very hard grader and does not accept late work at all, no matter the situation. Her textbook can be hard to understand sometimes because of grammar and spelling errors.
DO NOT take this class or professor unless necessary. It is group work that you will be forced to do yourself if wanted done right, material primarily learned from unclear readings done at home, and work graded in the most confusing, worst way in which you can never predict or possibly imagine how to save your grade. A ton of work for no reward.
DO NOT TAKE. You will spend hours doing the most pointless homework that you will probably fail because she is such a tough grader. You never know what your actual grade is because of her weird grading until the end of the semester when it is too late to fix. She makes you use her $80 book filled with pointless info and worksheets. Again DONT DO IT
The textbook was one she wrote herself so she did not talk much in lectures. There are lots of group projects and they are heavily loaded (you also need to do so much individual work for the group work to count towards your grade) and her papers are worth a lot. She also uses a lot of tables in all her assignments which do not help much at all.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! If at all possible take with a different professor. You have so many individual assignments that are ridiculously long and time consuming that only count for 2-10 points which it's impossible to receive full credit. Not many lectures. No lectures means spending all class working on assignments with your group worth only 2pts
Assigns hw frequently before going to class and its very helpful to learn the material before going to class.
Literally the worst class i've ever taken. You won't learn much about psychology and you will be forced to buy her book that she wrote. Her GAs that grade are extremely tough graders. The class is based almost entirely on group work (by the way you don't get to choose the group). I would really recommend you take another class & or professor!
I would not take this class again. Shes a decent lecturer, textbook is decent, and there's a lot of busy work. Normally, this isnt too bad. However, she is extremely tough on grading. She gives no specific feedback, other than a shoddy rubric. She also puts you into permanent teams, but will give you zeroes on assignments if you all work together.
Decent class, if you do all the work and do it well then you will end up with at least a B. It is a lot of homework, but not very difficult. Class work is easy. Just dont slack off or your grade will drop
Loved her! There is a lot of work, but very easy questions if you read the book. The only way you will get a bad grade is if you dont do your work, not show up to class, and get bad grades on team quizzes. Its not hard to pass her class but it is hard to fail her class!
She gives a lot of assignments and quizzes so don't think you can skip the class and your grade wont drop soon. the research credits and writing assignments take up a very good part of your out of class assignment scales. Don't take this class if you want a easy grade or already have a heavy course load.
Really good professor and easy class if you are on top of your work! Very easy readings, activities and writing assignments are time consuming but nothing worse than that!
Was a very good teacher, I learned a lot from this class. There is a lot of work but it is not hard. However, you cannot miss an assignment, she will not accept late work.
I took this class last semester as a freshman and it was pretty bad. Boring professor, not helpful when it comes to work whatsoever, does not allow late work, research credits and most of the work is tedious AF. She makes you buy the book she wrote only to have to end up teaching yourself. Honestly hated this class!
I loved this class and learned a lot from it. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunity, so that really helps too! if you're that type of person that doesn't read, do the assignments in time and skips class, don't take it cuz you'll fail it for sure! Its time consuming but not hard!
The class material was very interesting, but there are lots and lots of homework, every single week. If it weren't for the constant homework, the class would've been okay. Also, prepare for being put into a team for the whole semester.
Dr. Madson is a great professor. Have to be very involved in this class to get good grades. You will be put into groups of 5-6 & group work is important! Luckily I was in a great group who got along well. Textbook is required as you will Be uploading things quite often. Dr. madson has interesting lectures. Would definitely take her class again!
Dr. Madson is a decent choice. She tries to interact with everyone in the class, but since it's a Gen-Ed class this becomes difficult to do, due to the size. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who can't spend $100 on Madson's book and be ok with ripping out the pages for credit. Also beware: this class is based around team-based activities.
Laura is an outstanding professor and person. The only thing I can say that made her class frustrating is that sometimes her instructions and feedback are vague. If you reach out for clarification though, she'd most definitely help you. Just don't get overly confident on the assignments in this specific class and you'll do great.
She makes you buy the textbook SHE wrote which kinda feels like a conflict of interest. Her book is just filled with a bunch of worksheets and not very useful information and she uses it as a sort of excuse to not lecture. Also the whole class you'll be in a team so be prepared in case you get put with terrible team members. shes nice enough though
This class relies heavy on team activities, and you don't get to choose your team. The professor was awesome, but this class can get difficult because you're working with strangers and your grade is affected by their work. There is a lot of homework assignments, but they're easy. There are no exams or quizzes in this class which a plus!
laura is a great teacher and her lectures, when she does them, are very engaging. a lot of the work you'll do is in your teams that she puts you in from the beginning of the year. you have to use the textbook she wrote. i skipped a lot of her class this semester but still passed, its just a matter of how clutch you teammates are gonna be.
She's pretty good! Her class is interesting because you are assigned a group at the beginning of the semester and your grade relies on how engaging your teammates are. If you get stuck in a group that is anti social, you're f*cked! Luckily I had a great team. There's a lot of homework mainly reading and comprehension questions every week.
LOVE HER!!! If i could take all my psych classes with her I would
Makes you buy her textbook that she wrote only to find out you can get by without it. Not very respectful at times.
She uses a textbook she wrote herself. Her feedback is sort of vague. You get assigned a group and most assignments will be done in your assigned group. Be prepared if you have team members that won't do work.
Terrible, almost all the big "exam" grades are group projects done only in one class period where she grades it based on her ownA lot of homework on top of the reading and research credits you'll have to turn in. Her textbook is a book she wrote herself for over $100 which is mostly just worksheets. Most extra credits are 300pg books you must buy.
Class is structured around group work and there is lots of homework. There are group exams at the end of each module. Psych studies are required.
She was a good professor, but I would just recommend doing as much extra credit as possible. The TA's do most of the grading. You will be put into teams for the semester so your grade can vary by who you get put with but I wouldn't stress too much.
Idk why she has such a low rating, Laura is AMAZING. I feel like the people who gave her bad rating just had a bad group because you WILL be doing a LOT of groupwork with the group you're sorted into. I actually really enjoyed this Psych class. I'm not too smart but passed with a good grade, don't pay attention to the other comments, GO FOR IT!
Professor Madson's class is structured around group work and assignments, but stay engaged and use resources like ChatGPT and Unstuck ai for study prep - they really help offset the workload.
This course is 90% group work. If you get a bad group, drop immediately!!! If you want a professor who is awful at Canvas, this one is the professor for you. On the bright side, she does give a lot of extra credit. The Textbook is required to pass the class, and it is $100, which she wrote. 2 minute 2 question quiz with lockdown browser everyday.
Terrible professor, the entire course is structured around groupwork. If you get stuck with bad group members, you will FAIL the course. She wrote the mandatory textbook that costs 100+, with worksheets that are graded.
Horrible, didnt lecture, relied heavily on the textbook that she wrote herself. The whole course is group work and is worth the majority of your grade.
90% group work—if you get a bad group, drop fast. Professor struggles with Canvas but gives lots of extra credit. You must buy her $100 textbook to pass. Daily 2-minute, 2-question quizzes with LockDown Browser. Group dynamics and disorganization make this course tough to manage.
Group work is 90% of your grade. If your group slacks, drop ASAP. The professor is not organized on Canvas but gives plenty of extra credit. Her $100 self-written book is required to pass. Daily quizzes (2 questions in 2 minutes) with LockDown Browser add stress.
90% of the class is group work. One weak link can ruin your grade. The professor doesn't manage Canvas well. She gives lots of extra credit, though. Her textbook is required, costs $100, and she wrote it. Short quizzes every day—2 questions, 2 minutes, LockDown Browser.
This professor purposefully drops your grade even if you complete the work. She does not care about the students' well-being in the class and will do anything to make it hard on the students.
if your not religious pick one and start praying
So bad I considered dropping my psych minor! The class is easy if you do the work but I LEARNED NOTHING!!!! She makes you buy her textbook that she wrote. She also explains how you can get a bunch of extra credit throughout the semester and i was so excited I was sitting at a 94 all semester...extra credit got added, and my grade went up 0.20%
If you get this professor, immediately change your professor. You will not be learning anything about psychology. There's work every class, so use the textbook copy at Zuhl don't waste $100 to just fill in worksheets. If you get a bad group assigned you are stuck. However, if you do get her, don't panic just do your work and you will be fine.
Based off group work. Most of the time will not grade properly & has the TA grade a lot of it. Easy lectures & very interesting. But she is not it
This class relies very heavily on group work, and you cant switch your group if you get a bad one. I got a good group during this so I personally liked doing the work. I would say that I felt like many things were kind of rushed through, but other than that I liked the class.
