If you get a chance to take Intro to Linguistics with McGarrity, take it she is very funny and keep your attention the whole class period. :-)
very good lecturer, multiple choice exams
No Comments
She's super funny and I love her jokes! Her lecture slides are very easy to understand and multiple choice exams are very straight forward. My TA Ann Gaponoff was very nice too! I enjoyed this class a lot! :)
How is she funny!? She has a monotone voice and is SOOOOO boring! I got so sick of looking at her face...
Excellent professor, I'd take her again in a heartbeat! She's very funny, clear, concise, and responsive to student questions. She answers honestly, looks up information she does not know, and follows up. She is open to questions during office hours and makes herself readily available to students. I recommend her VERY highly!
She was absolutely awesome! Hands down, one of the best courses I've taken at UW. She's funny and her quizzes/midterms are pretty easy!
great professor. powerpoints are really helpful, and she gives a lot of examples. the exams are all multiple choice, and she even gives a study guide. quizzes are also very straight forward. highly recommended
Definitely want to go to lecture. Quizzes are directly based on lecture and week's readings. Pretty interesting material considering it was my first Com class, but definitely study up. Tests, quizzes are all on little details too. Prof and TA very nice people.
Interesting lectures. Even though there is nothing special, she keeps the whole class' attention. The quizzes and exams are pretty reasonable and overall easy if you work a bit. If you're looking for a VLPA, QSR, OR I&S credit (yes, 3 types), I highly recommend this class.
Laura is one of the best professors I've had at UW; crystal clear explanations and she knows how to keep the lectures interesting. Easy class overall, she posts her lecture notes online and the tests are all multiple choice. The homework and pop-quizzes are relatively easy if you've been keeping up with the readings.
very good instructor, relatively easy class. i became much more interested in the subject after taking this course.
Great teacher, very easy class. all test are multiple choice, homework and quizzes are very easy.
McGarrity has a great enthusiastic lecturing style. The class is graded on only 6 homeworks, a few simple quizzes and two multiple choice tests. It's hard to fail if you go to class. The lectures are redundant to the book, but it has some nice pictures and charts for the visual learners. Class is great for QSR if you're not a math person.
Loved this class, loved her! She quotes The Simpson's! How could you not love that? Go to lectures! Trust me, miss them and you'll bomb the tests. Plus, they're pretty intereting. The material can be dry at times, but not her. Always willing to help. If you don't do well, it's your own fault.
She is fun and the material chosen are interesting...grading is fair too. I think she curved and I got a grade higher than I first expected. Recommended!
Pretty easy class. Just attend all of the classes and the tests are about the lecture slides. The homework and quizzes are straightforward. She also gives out study guides and goes through them before each exam.
Explanations are crystal clear, making it easy to get a good grade while actually learning something. Also, this quarter she started doing "screencasting" so you really don't even have to go to class!
Subject isn't very interesting, but fairly easy VLPA credit. Lectures are recorded and put online. Quizzes are taken online, easy to get 10/10. Homeworks are graded easy, easy to get 9 or 10s. Only one midterm and one final. She is a fun professor but the subject is just boring. Section is pointless besides turning in homework and getting it back.
her lecture is quite interesting.
Easy class, but just not worth it. The material is dull as hell, the professor is a control freak as well as a bore, and the TAs were some of the most cringe-worthy I've ever had. Least engaging class I've taken at UW.
Professor McGarrity rocks! Her lectures are clear and very easy to understand. She is accessible and approachable. Also, she interjects humor in her lectures which makes them more enjoyable.
very clear explanations, easy A if you know what you're doing! good lecturer, attendance not mandatory but participation in section is. Anyone whose english skill needs basic grammar is welcome to take LING100!
excellent professor. i decided to major in linguistics because of her class. she is very passionate about her subject. she keeps lectures interesting with family guy references and she makes the material relevant. i barely had to open the book because it was so easy to pay attention to lecture.
This class is really cool. 4 lectures and 1 quiz section a week. Professor McGarrity does a great job with explanations and does a lot of examples, for those of you who learn better with them (like I am). Barely read the book because lectures were so clear and went over what you had to read. Lectures are screencasted too. Very chill VLPA course. :D
Took this class anticipating it to be easy. Seemed easy enough through the year, light workload, going to class not really necessary. However, final was tough, and I ended up with a lower grade than expected. Material is extremely boring and not very useful, disappointing class, though it isn't Mcgarrity's fault, she is a pretty good professor.
Probably the worst class I have ever taken. I got a 96% on the mid term and the class average was 85%. She thought it was too high and made the final ridiculously hard and included material that not even THIRD year students had covered. Boring material as well. Arrogant Professor. Take another class for VLPA.
Professor MacGarrity was great. She was upbeat and explained the material and expectations clearly. I wish more teacher were like her. I would recommend all my friends to her.
McGarrity's super nice and does a good job explaining the concepts. This class does take a lottt of memorization though. She can be interesting, but personally i thought the subject and class was really boring, which is probably why i didn't enjoy the class all that much.
Professor McGarrity is amazing -- definitely someone to take a class from. She's funny and clearly cares about the information that she is presenting, not to mention that she knows a ton and is always willing to answer questions. She keeps the class simple enough to understand, but still interesting.
She is a great professor and explains the content so clearly. However, it is not that easy to get a good grade coz everyone does well in this class.
She's awesome and puts all her lecture stuff online. She just wants you to do well, even if you don't go to class, and everything about the class material is made very clear.
The class seems like it will be a piece of cake but really only if you put the effort into memorizing everything. Lectures are boring and for homeworks and quizzes we have to use a site called Moodle, and we can't see our work after it's been submitted so you can't go back and check what you did wrong. Not useful for learning.
not a good class. confusing material, and really boring lectures. she's rude, doesnt even let u use laptop or phones during class. treats u like a kid.
Incredibly confusing midterm, hardest class I have taken in college so far. Go out thinking you got a 100% (with enough preperation to get that grade) and find out you got just above average (which is a 2.0 btw). Class isn't curved so have fun with your grade. Take this if you are a ling major, don't if you're looking for VLPA credits.
Prof McGarrity is a wonderful teacher. She's funny and makes the (at times boring) material more interesting. As for the comment about about the moodle website used for assignments, there IS a way to see the correct answers to tests and quizzes. Obviously you were not paying attention in class when she clearly explained how.
If ur looking for vlpa courses, don't take this... hw and quizes seemed easy(got 90 or above everything) but midterm is ridiculous. don't take this if ur not ready to work hard.
Professor McGarrity is awesome! One of my favorites. She has a good sense of humor. It helps even boring topics seem interesting. The tests aren't too hard, but you do have to pay attention/read. She cares about her students a ton. Take this class with her if you can! :)
McGarrity is an awesome lecturer. She's thorough, energetic, entertaining, and very understanding. She goes over everything that you're supposed to read in the book...sooo I've hardly touched the book. She is also very personable. I look forward to going to that lecture at the end of the day.
Lectures get boring because she repeats herself way too much and says the same thing over and over in different ways. I guess that's good if you have a learning disability, but this is college. Also doesn't appear to care about her students.
Pretty easy class if you go to lecture and do all the assignments. Sheâ??s funny, explains things clearly and definitely entertaining, I donâ??t think I ever fell asleep in that class.
Beware, the class is not curved and the exam/finals are inconsistent with what is taught in class.
This is a great class. Five credits, interesting, and super easy. Professor McGarrity is a great professor, and the class is easy and hardly any work. Recommended.
Great professor. Really funny, keeps the class extremely interactive, very clear in delivering information. There really isn't very much material at all in the course, so tons of time for examples, whimsy, etc.
Good prof. Very easy, explains things wonderfully. Fun, easy 4.0 class. You learn a lot. Can be very funny.
This class is easy! The book isn't necessary at all, and she posts lecture slides online so you don't even need to take notes. Attending lecture is mandatory and as long as you understand the material, it's no sweat. McGarrity is a great lecturer.
Useless class unless you're a ling major. Exams are based on memorization, she also takes forever to grade a multiple choice exam. I've taken classes up to 700 people that gets exams graded faster. Class is pretty easy though but so boring, I see people sleeping or leaving after the first 10 minutes almost all the time.
She's such a fun professor! The class isn't super hard but her lectures are really interesting. She's funny and really clear when she lectures so going to lecture is actually useful. Plus she uses clickers so that helps in understanding the material. Overall a great class.
She is very cool and her lecture gives a lot of interests to students. Homework and quiz are easy but the exam is pretty tough. If you study hard, you can get more than 3.5 easily.
She's fun. I did not like the subject linguistics, I even fall asleep in class multiple times. But the way she gives out lectures, TA notes and homework make it really easy and fun to learn linguistics. I would recommend taking her class.
Took this class for an easy VLPA credit. Wasn't too bad. Lectures got boring but weekly quizzes and homework was easy. Had clicker responses so you needed to actually show up to class. I learned a bunch of random interesting stuff. Definitely recommend.
This professor is the only reason I go to classes. The material can be challenging and at the same time extremely interesting. WARNING: MUST MEMORIZE SOME THINGS. Though she has now got me interested in Linguistics. Laura McGarrity is HILARIOUS and has the best accents. She's an incredible teacher. So glad I took this class.
She's a great lecturer and keeps class interesting. Quizzes/homework are easy points and tests are reasonable. As long as you attend class and keep up with the quizzes/hw, you shouldn't have a problem getting a decent grade. My only complaint is that tests take a while to get scored. Overall awesome course, I'd highly recommend.
Her class is really interesting. I like the jokes that she tells us during the class. All the quizzes and homeworks are online. The final is cumulative. If you do the practicing tests, you will be fine.
The subject is so boring, and the way she taught it is even worse. She gets really mad when there are people talking in class and treats us like elementary kids. Also she always give us trick questions on the homework and quizzes.
OH GOD this class is terribly boring. Avoid at all costs. I thought it was going to be an easy 4.0 so put in minimal effort and got a 3.2. Class if about 80% international students so it's hard to make friends. Anyway, it's boring, hard, and not an easy 4.0...unless you like talking about grammar.
boring lecture. gives us easy examples in lecture. tricky questions on quizzes and tests.
The class is easy in general, but this professor makes it that much easier with her well structured and entertaining lectures
Great professor. The course is easy as a whole and her explanations are crystal clear. I learned something useful with her. Recommend her!
She is one of the best lecturers you'll meet at the UW. Her powerpoint slides are also so clear that there's no need for a textbook. Lectures are not mandatory but she uses turningpoint clickers (i think you can miss 5-6 days and still get 100% in participation). Exams aren't that difficult!
What a way to start my university journey. Worst class ever. Professor is not reachable and not interested in students. None of the lectures were clear.
Professor McGarrity definitely loves teaching this class, it shows in her lectures at class. She is also really funny and explains concepts really well. Tells you what you need to know for the exams as well.
She is fantastic. Even those who don't care about linguistics find her lectures interesting. She makes everything really easy to understand. Homework, quizzes and tests are all straight-forward and really easy to study for. Never bought the textbook, her lectures are sufficient
I only took the class for the VLPS credits, but now i'm seriously considering minoring in Linguistic. Her class is too awesome, she is so hilarious.
Such a great lecturer. She's very passionate about what she does and it shows. Lectures are very clear and easy to follow. As long as you go to every lecture and know the material well, the tests are straightforward.
I absolutely loved this class! McGarrity is an awesome lecturer; she gives you ample time to copy down her notes, which are straight forward and organized and she explains everything well. I made stupid mistakes on the midterm (negatively worded questions) so could have done better, but felt like I truly learned lots and enjoyed every minute of it.
Lectures get boring.
LING 200 was a fantastic Class. Dr. McGarrity was fantastic in capturing student interest, through very engaging lectures. She often encourages dialog with the students, and I encourage you to speak up. Homework and Quizzes aren't too bad, and there's usually a couple of points of extra credit.
McGarrity is hilarious, and her lectures are usually organized and easy to follow. They can be a bit boring sometimes, but she gives really memorable examples that can seriously help you understand the material! If that's not enough, there's plenty of resources that can help you out. Overall, a pretty fun and easy class!
The course LING 269 is a class called Swearing & Taboo Language. She is actually very knowledgable in the subject and I always find myself enjoying the course. She is an amazing lecturer who is able to keep the class engaged throughout the class. Love her! Her lectures are so easy to follow!
Do not recommend this class if you are not interested in linguistic. 95% (grade weight are not balance that will lower your total grade if you got at least 2 bad score from either quiz or exam) of your grades are depended on your 8 quizzes and 2 exams. Quizzes are tricky.
I love Prof. McGarrity! She's really nice and funny. Her lectures are very clear and easy to understand. There are a lot of things to memorize for the tests, however they are not too difficult. Prof. McGarrity makes every piece of information interesting. I definitely recommend her and her class! I hope to have her again in the future.
Taking the online class was tough... I went to her lectures even though it wasn't required. Based on the materials provided through only the online class, I found it near impossible to master the subject. Other than that though her lectures were okay
What a great way to start off my UW experience! McGarrity made Swearing and Taboo Language far more clear and professional than I could have imagined it myself. It almost felt like a sociology class, which I loved. I never read the textbook and finished with an A grade. Overall, I would rate this course as excellent for sure!
This class was so easy. I played on my phone and spent 45 min outside of class per week and got a 4.0 no problem. There are 6 homework assignments and 7 quizzes, the lowest of each get dropped. There is one midterm and one final, each are worth only 20%. She does do clicker questions in class every day so do go to class if you want credit.
Professor McGarrity is hysterical. Lectures are enjoyable and quizzes/homework are a breeze. Section is pointless. The only down side to this class is the difficulty of the midterm and final compared to the rest of the class. With that being said, if you put some effort into it this class can be an easy 4.0.
Loved taking LING269 with her. She was the only enjoyable professor I had this quarter; she's incredibly sympathetic towards students and offers a lot of opportunities for help. You don't actually need to buy the textbook since she covers everything in her lectures.
I have taken LING200 and 269 with McGarrity, both of which I really enjoyed. She is my favorite lecturer at the UW thus far and she makes every aspect of the class interesting and engaging. Her expectations are always reasonable and she is also hilarious. Take one of her classes if you get the chance! (Also don't buy the textbook for LING269)
Professor McGarrity's class was really fun because I enjoyed taking notes and exploring new ideas in lecture. She is a really great teacher :). Unfortunately, the online reading quizzes that they make you do and the online homework were difficult because of how specific you had to be with the multiple choice answers (AKA trick questions).
Definitely one of my favorite professors I've had. She makes lectures a lot more enjoyable and engaging by slipping in little jokes here and there. Her lecture is always very clear and easy to follow.
Thought this class would be easy, but boy was I wrong! Content was difficult at times, quiz section was pointless, &midterm/final were SO hard despite studying a ton and hiring a tutor. Lectures were very boring and made me want to fall asleep everyday. Would not recommend this class to anyone. Don't waste your $ on the textbook.
Maybe I would've enjoyed this class in an in-person setting. Lectures were really dry (even though Laura tried her best with humor). Her exams are full of curveballs and tricks, so learn the small details. (Also, don't buy the textbook. Seriously. Don't buy it. Completely unnecessary.)
I came into this class thinking it was going to be super easy but it's not. The first half of the quarter was more analytical work and test scores were lower on the midterm. The second half was much easier, more broad concepts. The final was way easier. Not the hardest class, but also not a walk in the park. You don't need the textbook.
Straightforward grading and assignment. Quizzes and exams are a little bit tricky so make sure to read the questions more than once. Other than that, McGarrity is fantastic lecturer. Clear and concise powerpoints and explanations! Also keeps you awake with her great humor and passion for ling. Glad I learned ling from her.
Laura knows the subject rather well, and makes her lectures quite interesting. The first half of the course involves more memorization, and one has to put in more effort then, but the latter half can be taken more easily. This class is also great to get done with those VLPA credits. Also, try getting into Kellianne's quiz section - she's amazing!
I went to class every day and ended up getting a 4.0. As long as you listen and copy down her presentations, you'll be fine. Do not buy the textbook. She doesn't test over anything that she didn't cover in class. You have one group project and two exams along with weekly quizzes and homework.
Professor McGarrity makes the class both fun and interesting. She is really funny and also knows a lot about the subject. There are weekly homework assignments/quizzes, but they are not too difficult. Expect to do some memorization of certain symbols and definitions. Overall a great class and great professor.
perfect professor
her lecture is enjoyable
This professor is the best I've had yet! She had amazing lectures and had me interested in the field of Linguistics even though it has nothing to do with my major. If you have the chance, take a class with this professor.
Genuinely hilarious lectures; she's a fantastic speaker. Her class is a great one to audit just because the lectures are seriously entertaining. She made the course material fun and interesting. Don't buy the textbookif you go to lecture you don't need to read anything. Extremely easy A.
She is a respectable professor who is always putting in the best for her students. Available for office hours, funny and interesting in class, and poses good questions for her students. As a large lecture class, it is unfortunate that we had to use multiple choice tests for such interesting and nuanced concepts. (average class grade 84.29% 2.9)
AVOID AT ALL COST!!!!!! WILL WRECK YOUR GPA. MY 4.0 BECAME A NEGATIVE 3.0 :OOOOOOOO
I took her class as an elective assuming it's an easy 4.0, but it's a little harder than people say. I did pretty well even though I bombed the first midterm. Her lectures are funny and contain everything you need for the tests, so no need to read the book. If you keep on top of the assignments and quizzes and study before exams, you're set.
Homeworks and quizzes are really easy. Exams are MCQ. Class is not graded on a curve so it's an easy 4.0. McGarrity is a great lecturer and absolutely hilarious at times. I definitely recommend it if you want a chill VLPA class. Make sure you attend class though because participation can mean the difference between a 4.0 and a 3.5!
Professor McGarrity is, without a doubt, the best professor in the LING department.
She is a good teacher but IT IS NOT AN EASY A. Don't take this if you want an easy grade without doing work. Going to class is NEEDED for a good grade. 1 midterm, 1 final and online 10point quizzes with HW every week
Gotta go to class, there are graded PollEverywhere questions every time, but its fun, she's so funny and enthusiastic and caring. HW is not insignificant - you'll want to put some time into it. Yes there's a textbook, but I found it unnecessary - its a good reference tho. Phonetics is the worst, get ready to memorize the US IPA or suffer on exams.
NOT AN EASY 4.0. You have to go to class for participation points and you have to put in effort on the weekly homework and quizzes. Exams are quite difficult. That being said, McGarrity is an excellent prof and you will be rewarded if you put in the effort.
A very fun and not too difficult class, with an amazing professor. She was very clear and quite funny in her lectures, which is all you really need to get a good grade in the class (the textbook gets too in-depth). She grades for participation too however so make sure you show up to lecture!
Solid lecturer. I enjoyed her class and would definitely look to take another by her if I saw something I was interested in. Lectures became a bit boring at times, but what I loved about her lecture slides were that they were written perfectly for taking notes to and she was great about pausing on each slide to let us write things down.
Laura is such a good lecturer! She makes the somewhat confusing content very very understandable. Her lectures are funny and engaging. Her ability to expand on questions is also amazing. I would take any class she offers! Other than her tests being a little bit hard, I did very well in her class :) You will not be disappointed!!
Laura is an incredible professor! She simplifies the content and makes it very relevant and easy to understand. She is very knowledgeable and absolutely hilarious! Laura is an all around wonderful person with a great sense of humor and a big heart! Take one of her classes! You won't regret it!!
Awesome teacher, she's really funny and you can tell she enjoys teaching. You have to show up to class or you'll fail because the test material is based on lectures not on the reading. Pretty tough overall but really interesting.
Laura is awesome! She makes linguistics fun to learn and loves to make jokes in class. Midterm and final were a bit challenging so don't neglect going to section to do some extra problems because she goes through her lectures pretty quickly.
Prof McGarrity is probably one of my favorite Linguistics department teachers at the UW, this was my second time taking a class with her. She makes it a joy to learn and honestly as long as you go over the lecture slides for this class you should be fine AND the final wasnt cumulative!! The group project was the only annoying bit for this class...
She is an amazing professor who makes learning linguistics very fun and easy. Would absolutely take her for more classes if I could. Attend every lecture (required clicker questions), pay attention, study the slides, and you will get an easy A. It was one of the easiest and most interesting classes I have ever taken, thanks to her!
At first, I thought it was a grammar class but it turned out to be something much more interesting. The lectures were never boring and the pace was just right. Professor Laura would always guide you through the materials. There are some stuffs you have to learn and memorize for hw and exams. TAs are helpful so do go to the quiz sec!
Professor McGarritys LING200 singlehandedly got me interested in linguistics. She is funny, obviously knowledgeable and passionate about her subject, and her class is well-paced and well-organized. The class is on-par with what youd expect from a 200-level class and Professor McGarrity makes it so enjoyable. Shes a gem!
Laura is so fun! Her lectures are engaging and hilarious. Be warned that the first half of the class is tough, more technical, and requires a lot of memorization, but the content of the course is so interesting and you will still think about it long after finishing the class. It's not an easy A, but the workload is very manageable for an elective.
This class isn't necessarily "a SUPER easy 4.o" like psych or other ones. You actually have to pay attention in order to do well on the quizzes and hw. It's easy as long as you show up and put effort in. Don't bother getting the textbook, she covers everything in lecture already.
Can't speak for the other ling200 profs but there's no going wrong with Laura. She's lively and funny and passive aggressive, and her exams (all MC) are pretty easy as long as you pay attention in class. Quiz sections, especially the first half of the quarter, are basically mandatory. A good TA makes a huge difference - I got a bad one :(
Shes super funny and sweet! I took this class during Fall 20 (covid time) and the whole class was asynchronous including the quiz sections. Class was set up in weekly modules and was pretty easy. Shes clear in what she wants on assignments (3 written assignments) and the HW is easy directly from videos. Videos go by quickly just take good notes!
Laura McGarrity is a good professor and she definitely knows the field well. The class just had much more work than one would expect. One 500 word paper due every week, two exams, and an 8-10 page book report. For a class that isn't a W credit, there was a lot of writing. The class itself was very interesting, just time consuming.
One of my favorite professors. This class has been pretty easy, and there's a lot of support for remote learning, if necessary. 1 take-home quiz + 1 hw per week, very similar to lecture material so they're pretty easy. Take good notes during lecture and you'll do great. She makes the course materials pretty interesting, even when it sounds boring.
LING269 (Swearing and Taboo Language) by Prof. McGarrity was a very interesting class. Dr. McGarrity explained things clearly and was very organized. Her lectures were always very engaging. The work she assigned was light -- some multiple choice questions and sometimes short answer responses each week, and 4 small essays.
Professor McGarrity is one of my favorite professors next to Terry Swanson. I took her Ling269 and am currently taking Ling 200 with her both online. Her tests are pretty easy if you know how to look through your notes online. Even then, if you watch the lectures her concepts are easily understandable and she's not boring like other professors.
This is a good class for those who are interested in linguistics! I thought this class was fun and was not very hard. There is one homework assignment and quiz every week. The workload is very manageable.
LOVED LING 200!!! I am not a linguistics student and was just taking this class for fun, and I absolutely recommend this class. Prof McGarrity's lectures are extremely well organized and she makes the already interesting topic of linguistics even more fascinating. Very manageable workload; if you listen and take notes in lectures, you will pass.
Really good professor. Class is set up for lectures 3 times a week and section the other 2 days. Either a Quiz or HW due every week. Course isnt too hard as long as you show up to lecture and do the work you'll get an A
One of the best classes I've taken at UW so far! She made linguistics super interesting. I even kinda became interested in more linguistics class because of her, lol. The class is definitely not an easy 4.0, but in my opinion studying and putting effort into this class is suuuuper rewarding. I'd definitely recommend!
Best humanities class ever! Laura really knows her stuff and gave insanely interesting lecturers. The class felt much more about learning than getting a good grade. Cracks jokes, has memes on the slides, answers questions thoughtfully and very enthusiastic + passionate about linguistics and her students' experience in the class.
Laura is a great professor. The course is very interesting, and she does a lot to add to the classroom experience. She is very personable and engaging.
Laura is such an amazing lecturer!! Her classes are always interesting and the workload is very reasonable!! Definitely take LING 200 with her!!
She keeps lectures very entertaining. As long as you stay on top of the reading, the class is not bad at all. There's poll-everywhere in every class, and you only need to complete 75% of them to get credit, so missing a few lectures is alright. Textbook is also free online.
Dr. McGarrity is such an engaging lecturer. I was interested in linguistics to begin with but she made me love it ten times more! I'm even taking another course taught by her next quarter. If you're on the fence, I say try her!
She's awesome! Very flexible, wanting to help, funny in class, wants to connect with students, knows how to explain things clearly and always with great enthusiasm. Grading was crystal clear from the start, great course structure with syllabus and Canvas modules. You know what to expect and when to expect it.
Dr McGarrity was pretty entertaining and engaging in this class. I had her for LING 200 and she was phenomenal. One thing that really caught me off guard was that she said certain slurs, not the N word but other harmful ones, which was kind of disappointing. Even though the class is about swearing, I felt like it was unnecessary on her end.
Prof. McGarrity was clearly passionate about the subject matter and encouraged participation (which was a small percentage of the final grade) in a way that didn't feel like a chore. There was a fair bit of reading, but it felt reasonable for 5 credits. Tests had extra credit and the Canvas page even had extra practice lessons we could study from.
Very good at clearly explaining things with a fun sense of h umor.
Loved Professor McGarrity's engaging lectures! Linguistics was already interesting, but she made it even more so. unstuck ai was super helpful for studying.
I cannot recommend this professor and course enough. VERY interesting class and McGarrity provides entertaining and engaging lectures. More than just a silly class on swearing. Weekly textbook readings (can get by without) and homework. About 3 writing assignments that are managable. Multiple choice midterm and final!
McGarrity is great! I'd recommend her for anyone interested in linguistics, she'll probably inspire you to continue! She's funny and fair. Overall great class.
Prof. McGarrity is one of the best professors I've had so far. She goes over the material in a clear and concise way that made learning the content so much easier. She is very funny and engaging, which made attending class super fun. There is a lot of practice resources available for exams and she makes grading very clear. I definitely recommend!!
Even copying and pasting from ai felt a great waste of time. Meaningless credits required by A&H.
Simple homework/quizzes, open-note midterm/final. She is funny and very knowledgeable about the topic. A bit passive-aggressive, but that adds to the class. It's a bit more challenging than anticipated (lots of memorization), but rewarding and a cool topic to explore. The effort you put in strongly correlates with the result of your grade.
Her lectures are interesting, funny, and thorough. There's more memorization than I expected, but the material is really interesting. You probably don't actually need the textbook if you pay attention, but it helped me study. Weekly quizzes and homework are easy. Midterm and final are open note/asynchronous, and she provides practice quizzes.
Professor McGarrity is a really great professor, especially if you are starting at UW. She is a very thorough lecturer and clearly cares deeply about linguistics. Her lectures are very fun to attend, and the material is very easy to understand. The midterm and final are both open notes, along with the quizzes and homework. Highly recommend.
She made lectures very fun and very palatable and it is clear she has a deep understanding of her field. I never read the textbook, only attended lectures, but the way she teaches made me understand everything the first time and I didn't need the textbook. All tests are open note/open book.
easy a but be prepared to completed graded polls every single lecture. you can learn everything from the slides and all exams are online and open note. lecture will drain the soul out of you. she just reads off the slides and regularly yelled at students in class, last lecture of the quarter she yelled at us for not filling out her evaluation
Very interesting content and lectures— covered everything I would've wanted. Fabulous professor, don't really need the textbook readings, but make sure you study for the midterm and final.
Dr. McGarrity is an amazing professor, with very easy to follow lectures. The midterm and final are both online, and easy if you've attended the lectures and pay attention.
