Dr. Ott is an amazing human being and professor. She cares about our well-being and is extremely accessible outside of class. Hands down my favorite professor at UNC. Offers lots of extra credit. Please take her class.
I think she is a very caring professor. However, her class is hard, at times the exams didn't quite reflect what she was teaching and the expectations were a bit high. It's like giving a kid a crayon and expecting them to draw like picasso, unrealistic expectations, right? However, she compensated well by giving an insane amount of bonus points
I came on here to leave a good review, and was surprised at how many people did not like her this semester. I actually really liked this class and although it was not easy, she provided us with many extra credit opportunities throughout the semester (added 10 points to almost every exam, even the final). Don't be scared to take this class!
I actually really liked Dr. Ott for BIOL202. She only taught for the first half of the semester, but I felt that her lectures were pretty engaging and covered the material well. She also had very helpful weekly review sessions and was consistent with checking her emails. Overall, would recommend her!
An amazing professor! Her lectures were very clear and easy to understand and she was very accessible, even online. Tests don't surprise you, and if you study/practice and do the homework you will do well!
Lectures were not good. You can't pass class based off lectures. Not meant to teach in my opinion. A for effort, I guess?
Dr. Ott is such a nice person and so passionate about anatomy! This class is a lot of information, but the final isn't cumulative. Tests were hard and some questions had weird wording, but she threw out confusing questions and gives extra credit. Worst part were the timed homeworks. Fight for your answers if you believe they are right!
Dr. Ott is by far the most caring professor at UNC, always helping you strive for a better version of yourself. Her office hours were extremely helpful, especially for a class of such caliber. Exams and homework were difficult, but she gave out a lot of extra credit points. Make sure to study her test-like homework questions and go to office hours!
Horrible Class, ok professor. She's nice but is not a good teacher at all.
The exams were the hardest thing to master since they are application based exams. If you go to her office hours/review sessions, and ask a lot of question, you should ace the exams. Practice exams are similar to the real exams.
I really liked Dr. Ott's teaching style and found her lectures very helpful for learning many of the more complex topics in this course. Her tests tend to focus on applying the material and can be somewhat difficult, but there are plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
One of my favorite professors b/c she was so caring and understanding. It was an asynchronous class with optional live review sessions. It has a lot of material. She offered extra credit for attending mentor reviews. 75% of the grade were based on tests that were heavy application-based. She dropped one the lowest midterm exam if you took all 3.
Took this class over the summer and didn't have too much trouble. She was super helpful and gave a lot of chances to earn extra credit during the semester. I could see how this class would be a little more challenging during the school year but Ott is definitely a good choice!
Dr. Ott is an okay good teacher and a nice person but her exams are impossible. I made A's on all the quizzes but made C's on the exams. You get to drop your lowest exam grade if you take all of them (3 exams 1 final). She is hard to get in touch with and only allows for 10-minute slots in her office hours.
Dr. Ott is clearly enthusiastic and well-versed in what she teaches. However, her approach to students is much different. Dr. Ott preaches mental health, but will be condescending in individual meetings, telling you why you shouldn't have made mistakes and that it is your fault. I would not recommend her unless you have mental health to spare.
Dr. Ott is absolutely fantastic. Really cares about mental health and prioritizes it over schoolwork. Homework is due before every class, so theres quite a bit of it, but the homework is always super easy. Exams are much different and harder than the homework, but as long as you study you should be fine.
Professor Ott isn't a bad one, if anything you teach yourself the material with the assignments and she briefly goes over it the next day. She does care about mental health I would say and for my lecture at least she would drop the lowest exam and the lowest quiz grades which was nice. But overall she's a nice professor
Class isn't too bad, there's alot of homework, but it's justifiable. In her lectures, she is condescending and treats us like children... Don't know how else to explain it, you would think she was teaching 5th graders. Just super annoying being spoken to that way, not sure if it's bc it's a course freshman usually take?
I have taken AP Bio and got a four on the exam, transfer AP credit got a bit messed up so I had to take this class again. I would not take it with her if possible. Her class is easy and I got 100's on every quiz and homework yet FAILED every exam because the questions are legitimately impossible.
She's a really good professor and she cares a lot about her students. She will make cheesy jokes and get mad when no one laughs. Its stem class so its gonna be hard and test heavy but its not Dr. Otts Fault
The classwork and quizzes were never bad but the tests are IMPOSSIBLE. She definitely TRIES to trick you instead of just testing you on knowledge. The exams are nothing like the material learned in class. 75% of the grade are exams so even though I had an A in every other category, I will likely be getting a C because of exam grades (even passed).
Ott is the best biology professor you could get here. She is very enthusiastic to teach and knows what she's teaching. Even in a large lecture class, she knows how to make every voice heard and allows classmates to participate whenever possible (by choice of course). Her homework is consistently questions pertaining to the readings. Would recommend
Don't listen to the negative reviews! The exams are typical of a college course. They were open note, so as long as you understood the material you were set to do well. Just put in the effort by studying and use resources available to you. She was very kind and accessible in multiple ways. I will be taking BIOL 252 with her!
Prof. Ott would be incredibly if I liked biology. She is really caring and genuine and absolutely thrilled about literally everything about biology. Unfortunately, I hate biology and this class confirmed that. There is a lot of homework and the tests are hard but Prof. Ott is one of the good ones. Would take her class again except I hate stem lol
The good, the bad, the ugly: I enjoy lecture, homework and quizzes are extremely manageable. The bad: I felt like I understood everything (for the most part) taught in class but the exams are extremely difficult in comparison to just understanding the concepts. You have to apply yourself. The ugly: Dr. Ott is kind of condescending
Dr. Ott was very personable, despite the large lecture. She often would encourage participation in class and even ask for your names. She always has a ton of energy. The workload is manageable. No matter what I did though, I never seemed to get the grade I wanted on exams. I passed all my exams with C+s/B-s but exams are 75% of your final grade.
Dr. Ott is a solid choice in the Biology department. She makes the lectures enjoyable by being super enthusiastic at 9am. Although she was a great professor, you really have to work to get an A or a B in the class. I would recommend Dr. Ott to any one who needs to take BIOL101 here!
Your grade is determined by 2 midterms and a final, all 3 being incredibly difficult and nothing at all like any quiz questions or practice exam questions. You will spend hours on hours a week on reading and hw all of which is only worth 3% of your grade. Dr. Ott is super enthusiastic but simply doesn't know how to actually teach.
The tests required a lot of careful thinking, but practice tests and class practice problems really helped prepare for them. Overall, I spent at most 3 hours/week working on this class, homework included. A very enthusiastic lecturer who is good at teaching. You will learn a lot, and Dr. Ott is a solid choice for Bio 101
I thought taking 101 would be a nice refresher before going to the higher level classes. Boy was I wrong... DONTT TAKE W/ OTT. She makes the exams all application problems (they are much harder than the other teachers'; dont ask how I know :P). Lowkey patronizing and makes exams count WAY too much (75%). Lectures are engaging but all over the place
Dr. Ott is the worst professor I have had at UNC. This course is test-heavy with no room for failure. Her office hours are very discouraging, and if you ask for help she will just point out everything you're doing wrong in her class that doesn't even relate to class content. Please, save yourself the stress, and don't take BIOL 101 with Dr. Ott.
A lot of these reviews are probably really negative because some people aren't used to in-person STEM classes at UNC. Dr. Ott is an amazing and enthusiastic lecturer and highlights the important information you need to know. She explains concepts super well and her exams are what is expected of any STEM exam at UNC, nothing out of the ordinary.
I overall enjoyed the class and felt like I had learned a lot but my grade definitely doesn't reflect that. You have a lot of homework but it was manageable. I never got below a 90 on any assignment (quiz/ hw)but then really struggled with the exams and they were worth 75% of our grade. Be prepared for the exams to be nothing you've seen in class.
Dr. Ott was super caring and truly wanted all of her students to do well. The class was very lecture heavy and, per unit, I spent about 3-4 hours doing work outside of class. The tests are tricky but there are plenty of resources to help you prepare. The supplemental instructors and peer mentors truly helped me understand all of the material!
I loved bio before this class but Dr. Ott made this class way more stressful than it needed to be Exams are 75% of your grade and nothing you do in class will prepare you for them I went to office hours with her where she told me I had no hope in passing this class and no hope to get into nursing Save your mental health and take w someone else.
Dr. Ott is amazing! She made lecture fun, was very caring, and made herself available during office hours. The exams were hard, but to be expected for a STEM class. Lots of resources to help you do well in the class!
She recorded all lectures and posted them so we could watch later. She also had a Zoom option so you didn't have to go to class in person or even at all if you just watched the recordings. During exams they were nice bc they were online and open note so you could watch them during the test. Her lectures were interesting though and she gave some EC
Professor Ott is very caring and genuinely wants to know how her students are doing despite the size of the class, she offered online class and recorded all lectures, the homework was easy and very useful in studying, the exams are difficult but she does her best to offer a lot of outside help
Let me put it this way: I felt confident in my understanding of material but the grades I received on tests did not reflect that. The test questions are random and dont reflect material covered in class nor the textbook. Homework, quizzes, and practice tests are so much easier in comparison and dont properly prepare you. Class is pointless
Overall Ott was okay... As far as STEM goes she definitely isn't your worst choice. The exams are filled with poorly worded, trick questions. No matter your understanding of the material you'll miss a lot of questions. I just don't think she's figured out the whole teaching thing yet. Try to get someone else but if you can't you'll be fine.
I definitely was not a fan of Dr. Ott at the beginning of the semester, but as you understand her testing and teaching style, the course gets better. She is a bit condescending, but is also clear and will help if asked. Warning that the Honors section has all in-person tests, while the other sections take tests online.
Prof Ott has a ton of energy and tries to incorporate excitement into her lectures. She seems very knowledgeable and definitely wants you to succeed. Drops a ton of grades and provides extra credit when need be. Tests often have tricky questions that are unlike practice tests, but with a little luck and some studying, you can succeed in this course
Dr. Ott's class was challenging because a huge chunk of your grade involves exams that are heavily application-based. Questions are NEVER pulled from the book, but I feel like I learned how to think for myself because of her way of teaching. She encourages students to think in the bigger picture, but be prepared to grind a lot to succeed.
Dr. Ott is very passionate about biology and it helps you get interested in the topics covered. Unfortunately, it is bio 101 so it's not going to be an easy class, you will definitely have to work for it.
Dr. Ott is a fantastic lecturer. I learned a great deal from her course and I believe that I am better prepared for my other biology courses after having a course with her. Dr. Ott is heavy on prework but if you do the work and come to class prepared it will be easy. She is also very accommodating and flexible to make sure your needs are met.
Dr. Ott's lectures were really engaging and fun to listen too, mainly because she applies her lessons to real life events and examples, but her tests can be really brutal if you do not put the effort and time needed. The test questions are never pulled from the book, and you are forced to apply your knowledge to solve them. It is manageable though.
Dr. Ott is kind and friendly, and her lectures are engaging. However, exams are poorly worded and confusing- they are applications-based, since they're open notes. It's not enough to know the material- you need to apply it to hypothetical scenarios. Go to peer mentor review sessions to see examples of problems similar to those on the test!
Came to write a review after she decided to drop more than one homework assignment, let us add more info to our exam cheat sheets, & offered another extra credit opportunity. The literal best.
Dr. Ott is super enthusiastic about bio and definitely explains her points very clearly. Exams are extremely fair and as long as you pay attention to lecture and do the GRQs, you will be set for the exams, she prepares you well. She's such a sweet professor and I wish we had her for the whole semester.
She is a nice professor and I believe wants students to learn. I would suggest leaning on the textbooks and notes because sometimes the study resources(practice exams) that she has doesn't match up with the literal exam. Prepare for GRQs because you will have them for each concept.
I can't complain. She allows extra credit for every exam, is receptive and responsive to questions and criticisms, and is clearly excited to teach the material. Test questions can be hard (application). She allowed a front and back cheat typed cheat sheet, just cram stuff on there. Posts lectures and annotated slides. I'll either get an A or A-.
Great lecturer, really passionate about teaching. tests can be difficult because they are application based but if you understand the concepts well you should be fine. can have a cheat sheet for every exam and offers 2pt of EC on each exam (including the final). the subject of the class is also so so interesting
Dr. Ott is a real one. I love her, she has single-handedly made the biology department worthwhile. I have never had a professor who shows as much enthusiasm to the class and kindness and sincerity to students. A rare diamond
Dr Ott's class is tough; there's a lot of reading and material to cover in 4 months, but she gives tons of EC opportunities so you should be fine! The class is also really interesting, just beware of the amount of reading you have to do. 4 exams, cheat sheets allowed, +2pts on each exam if you do the EC assignment. good luck!
Very intelligent professor and provided good feedback. She allowed cheat sheets on each exam and her exams were from her lectures. I really enjoyed her overall and I would take her again.
Dr. Ott is a very enthusiastic professor who gives engaging lectures. Study the lecture outlines and attend peer mentor sessions and you will be set to do well in the class. Exams are pretty straightforward and pulls information directly from her lectures.
Professor Ott was a great professor. Her lectures were very straightforward and easy to follow. The class itself was fairly do-able; the tests were mostly based off of the PowerPoints, so make sure to look over those. The professors also allowed students to have a cheat sheet during exams, so that helped as well.
Overall there are 4 exams with the final being non- cumulative. She allows for 2 points extra credit on every exam. There is a lot of information that is covered! Peer mentor sessions are very helpful. The timed homeworks were the most challenging as they are pass exam questions, however they really prepare you for the unit test!!
Dr. Ott is such a sweet professor and is very passionate about the material. Her lectures were engaging but a little fast-paced. There is a lot of material so be sure to attend mentor sessions for help with that (which I should've definitely done). She offers a lot of extra credit throughout the semester to combat with her tough exams; great prof!!
She goes WAY too fast during lectures and her lectures are pointless because no one can comprehend the info. She gives extra credit because her tests are confusing and terrible. She yells at students during tests and is passive aggressive. Her peer mentors give out wrong/incorrect info and are unhelpful.
Dr. Ott is awesome! Her exams are tough, but if you use the resources she provides and put in the effort, you'll do fine. She is good about giving points back on exams when there is an issue with a question or the question is too hard. You can tell she really cares about her students!
Ott is a great anatomy professor option. She posts her lecture slideshows online and they are GREAT study material for the test. Her quizzes are representative of test questions and her peer mentors were prepared to answer any questions.
Dr. Ott clearly cares for her students and wants students to do well. But, the class is a lot and since the overall course grade is mainly based upon the tests which make up around 75% of the course grade, the tests are the defining factor of the class. Tests are hard and definitely test your "deeper understanding," but studying efficiently helps!
I loved this class! Dr. Ott was great and very caring - she was fair with grading and regularly dropped points in exams when there was a flaw in the question or the question was too hard. She was really good with communicating expectations with students. Take her class!
She's awesome, passionate about teaching and tries hard to remember everyone's name. Lecture not boring but tons of assignment.
The class is very hard. But Dr. Ott is very kind and passionate and does her best to help people learn. She is pretty flexible and responsive to feedback and emails.
Dr. Ott's class is hard, but she does a good job using interactive approaches during lectures. Tests are very hard but she provides many resources to study for them and allows us to bring a note sheet for them. Lots of homework but honestly it helps you study and learn the material so I don't mind it. Quizzes are sometimes worded to trick you.
BIOL 103 was my first bio class at Carolina. I only have AMAZING things to say about Dr. Ott. She is probably the best lecturer I've had this semester. She really cares that we understand the content and does a really really great job of explaining difficult concepts. Her tests are much easier than what you would think- very content based. 100/10
Dr. Laura Ott is an amazing professor. Although there is a lot of out of class work she does a great job of applying it to in class lectures. Tests are moderately difficult but she provides a lot of out of class resources for preportation.
I really enjoyed her class. She's great at teaching and the content wasn't too hard. She drops a lot of assignments, including the lowest midterm, that really helps.
Dr. Ott works very hard to make sure that class is engaging and is extremely receptive to feedback. The amount of work feels daunting at first, but it helps you learn and you get into a rhythm. She provides a lot of practice problems and you will do the best if you study using her provided course outcomes.
Professor Ott is great! I had her for BioL 103 so the class wasn't going to be super simple but I really felt like I learned a lot from her and that she was energetic and efficient in her lectures. We got to use a cheat sheet on midterms and one midterm gets dropped which was super helpful.
Dr. Ott's lectures are engaging, though difficult. Her tests are quite tricky, but she provides a ton of resources for studying. Dr. Ott clearly cares about her students, but she always seemed a bit annoyed at office hours. Overall, it's pretty easy to do well in her class if you take advantage of the TAs' review sessions and study guides.
I loved Dr. Ott. She is a great lecturer. The biology department gave students a lot of flexibility for BIOL 103. 4 quizzes are dropped, some absences are dropped, 1 midterm is dropped, and there is an opportunity to get extra points on the final if you attend office hours by the supplemental instructors, and they are really helpful.
Prof. Ott was so incredibly caring towards her students and made biology fun. Her class is very organized, you complete a GRQ and Mastering assignment per lecture as well as an outline during lecture. However, the tests are incredibly hard, so be ready to study for a few days. The questions are worded incredibly weird and WILL trip you up.
I loved having Dr. Ott for 103! You can tell she is incredibly passionate about the course material. The homework can be a lot sometimes, but it helps your learning. There are peer mentor sessions and lots of resources if you don't understand a topic. The lowest test grade is dropped and there is an extra credit opportunity for the final. Take her!
She's an amazing teacher! Not only are her lectures great, the tests are 100% representative of things we have done in class. She is also great during her office hours, where she explains difficult concepts very easily. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience!
Dr. Ott is a good professor just was a very difficult course. Very homework heavy - pay close attention in lecture but have a clear background of the content BEFORE class. Easy to fall behind in content understanding. Tests are heavy on application. Study EVERY NIGHT. Was a slap in the face to college but just because of the course, not her.
The course is essentially a face paced version of the genetic-related units in BIOL 101 with more in-depth knowledge given. The professor teaches quickly, and time management/ organization is essential. Many assignments get longer, and quizzes each week. The tests are challenging but manageable with dedication toward the subject.
If you have to take BIOL 101, take it with Dr. Ott. She is so sweet, and her #1 priority is that you learn the material. She frequently threw out test questions if the majority didn't get them right because she recognized they were unfair. As long as you stay up on the notes and the hw quizzes, this class is a relatively easy A.
Dr. Ott is good teacher to take bio 101 with. Lectures are entertaining and she posts them so if you miss class you're good. You need to study outside of class to make good grades. I studied three-five days before tests, completed all the homework, and received a decent final grade to receive a B.
Dr. Ott is a very caring professor, bio 101 can be a difficult class but take it with her! GRQs and a mastering assignment for ever class and unit quizzes (all online). Most of you grade is based on 3 exams and a final but the lowest of the three gets dropped. Failed the first exam but ended with an A- bc I went to her TA's review sessions.
Dr. Ott is a great professor. She gives you all the materials you will need to do well in the class. While the material is a bit difficult, she teaches it in a very engaging way. You have some wiggle room in turns of low quiz grades and some extra points, as well as cheat sheets. She could be a little passive aggressive outside of class though.
Dr. Ott is an excellent professor who is engaging and passionate about biology. I do think the cirriculum is quite fast paced and difficult, but Dr. Ott herself was a great teacher who tried to teach us in the best way possible.
This class was a lot of busy work (GRQs, mastering, weekly quizzes, learning catalytics), but I wouldn't consider it difficult. Go to her office hours before every test, do the practice problems, and review her lecture slides and you'll be fine. The final was a lot harder than the midterms, but that might've also been because I slacked.
Dr. Ott is really engaging and you can tell that she loves teaching. This class is difficult and fast-paced, but she does take student feedback into account. There is a lot of work outside of class and is flipped classroom instruction. However, she does drop a few of the lowest quiz grades, GRQs, and the lowest midterm, giving some wiggle room.
Dr. Ott turned what is often an intimidating course into an interesting and doable one. She provides countless resources to help students study and feel prepared for exams, and if you actually do the work that she lays out for you, you will succeed. She is caring and makes an effort to get to know her students. Take Dr. Ott!!
Dr. Ott is an excellent professor. There is a decent amount of busy work outside of class with a lot of repetition, but it isn't difficult by any stretch of the imagination. You will be very successful if you stay engaged in class and participate in the discussions. She is very passionate about what she teaches and provides plenty of resources.
Dr. Ott was an amazing professor! She cared for each and every one of her students and took the time to answer all the questions students had. The mastering and GRQs are time-consuming (specifically the GRQs) but they prepare you for class.
Passionate about class! She definitely cares about students, but can be intimidating. I went to office hours the first week hoping to get to know her but once I got there I was lost on what to talk about which is probably on me. The GRQs are very time consuming so don't wait until the last minute. Start studying for exams 2+ weeks prior.
Dr. Ott's tests were based almost exclusively on her lectures, which was a good thing, as her lectures encouraged students to really understand the content together in small groups throughout the semester. GRQs were very time-consuming, but helped when going back over when studying for tests. She's very knowledgeable on the content she teaches.
Very mixed about this class. On one hand, Dr. Ott was a great professor who is extremely passionate about the subject and genuinely cares about her students. On the other hand, her tests are overly difficult and the homework is a pain. If you actually go to class and do all of the homework, you will get an A. If you don't, good luck.
Ott knows how to make biology fun and keep you engaged; lectures remind me of a high school class which is great for freshmen. She can get an attitude at times and 3 exams + the final can make or break your grade, but she gives extra credit etc. the class is only difficult because it's biology which isn't easy
Dr. Ott works with many students and I think she does a good job of doing so. She is very organized (as is the biology department at UNC). Her classes are very high energy and they do foster a more equitable classroom. However, I sometimes missed the more serious, less childish, classrooms that are more traditional to academia.
Bio101 is not a class to be feared. Dr. Ott gives you everything you need and more; there are tons and tons of resources to help you learn. She cares and wants you to do well. She even drops your worst test score AND for my class she dropped our worst quiz. If you care enough to try, easy A. Professor Ott is amazing, 10/10.
Great person, just not my best subject and I feel as though the lectures did not help me with the actual tests. If I was better at biology, I may have gotten a better grade.
she is reverse classroom! you will be doing most of the heavy lifting yourself in this class! also she's not super great at explaining things. if you're taking 103 beware of the immunology unit bc this is what ott got her phd in so she goes wayyy beyond the textbook in material. tests (besides final and immunology unit) are super easy!
I would give Dr. Ott a -100 out of 5 if I could. She was just so condescending and mean to everyone. I asked some friends about her a while back and they all said the same thing, so it's not just me. In the end, I got an A, but don't take Dr. Ott's classes unless you like getting bullied and treated like you're not welcome in the classroom.
Dr. Ott is one of the best professors I have ever had! She cares a lot about her students and knew almost all of our names even though it was a huge lecture hall. She noticed we were struggling and she pushed exam 3 back to give us a review day. There's a lot of reading but it's manageable and she uses active learning so you solve problems in class
Dr. Ott was the best! She's so sweet & lectures are engaging. If you really try on the HW you will be able to understand in lecture. She gives oops tokens (you can turn things in late without any penalty) & you can have a 1 page cheat sheet on exams. These are live savers, make sure to spend lots of time on them. A lot of work, but you can do it!
I really enjoyed my time with Dr. Ott! As a non-Bio student who took it for an exploratory lab, I did not struggle as much as I thought I would. She was so caring and made the 400-person lecture feel close-knit and comfortable. She took the time to sit with me and analyze my test and how I could do better. I cannot say enough good things about her!
Dr. Ott is a very passionate professor, which is clear in her lectures. However, she goes extremely fast through the material so you have to be prepared before class. The exams are based on the lectures, but they are mostly application based and do not reflect how much time is spent on each topic (ex: something said one day is examed heavily).
Dr. Ott's class is hard, but she is a great teacher and provides numerous resources to help you succeed. She is also one of the most caring professors I've had -- I had to miss class for a personal emergency and she was very understanding and worked with me to make up the work.
Laura is so lovely as a person and professor. She loves what she does, and it shows in her teaching. Success was very achievable with a reasonable amount of studying--just making the cheat sheet is enough of a review if you keep up. She's funny, engaging, and wants you to do well. 10/10!
It was clear that Ott was very passionate about the topics in the class, and tried to come off as approachable. However, she would constantly yell at the TAs and was frequently rude to people in my class. A lot of the questions on her exams make no sense, but thankfully she ends up dropping most of them because of typos, etc.
I think some students find Dr. Ott rude because she has a loud voice and can be very direct, but I found her to be one of the most fair and caring professors I've had at UNC. Her exams come straight from her slides and she is great about dropping questions on exams that are flawed.
Professor Ott is super interactive in her lessons and I lover her lectures! she makes class enjoyable and explains everything well. Her exams are based on the lectures and PowerPoints so rewatching the lectures helps out a lot
Dr. Ott is extremely passionate and knowledgeable, and it shows in her lectures, which were engaging and reflected exam content! Some people say she can seem condescending (and I initially had that impression), but when I met with her during office hours, she was extremely kind and understanding! Overall, a great teacher, especially for 103.
class was super easy but there was a lot of reading and work that was annoying to navigate as it was across several platforms but the content was easy
Dr. Ott is a very kind and engaging professor. The material was difficult for me to understand from the textbook alone and she sometimes skipped basic explanations in favor of application-based practice, but she was incredibly helpful in office hours and her exams are much easier than other professors'. Would take again
I loved this class and the work. She is an amazing professor and taught in a way that would make sense even if the book made It seem really difficult. her lectures were more helpful than the textbook, her exams were not bad if you study and rewatch lectures it is fine
Dr. Ott's class is hard mainly because of the flipped classroom set up which a lot of the pre-class work is reading from the textbook and doing the work to teach yourself and then get a refresher in class. But she is a great teacher and provides many resources for students to get help and better understand the material.
Dr. Ott was absolutely amazing, she was incredibly helpful and thought the material very well. Her lectures lined up with the exams very well, so make sure you go over those. I'm telling you, she deserves all the hype that she gets, definitely one of the best professors I have had, and truly cares about her student and makes the class fun!
Dr. Ott is incredible! Lots of content, but Dr. Ott does an excellent job going over all the information in lectures such that we're well prepared for exams. Exams were challenging, but everything we needed to succeed came from the lectures. Read the textbook, do the practice problems, attend lectures, and you'll be golden.
I absolutely loved Dr. Ott. Even though I made C- that is no reflection of her teaching, she is a wonderful teacher I just have bad study habits. I do recommend watching over the lectures in case you miss something in the guided notes. I loved her setup and she is a very sweet lady.
I really enjoyed Dr. Ott for 252! There is a significant amount of work outside of class due to it being a flipped classroom model, but she did a great job going over the material in lectures. Her exams were difficult but fair, and she often dropped questions that were missed by the majority of the class. 252 is a hard class, but take it with Ott!
Although the class is a lot of work, I think Dr. Ott does her best to make the class feel feasible. She is a really sweet professor and her exams are reflective of the lectures from class! She gives good resources to review for exams and is open to answering questions. Lowest midterm is also dropped!
Roughly 75% of your grade will be based on 4 difficult exams, that includes the final exam. She is very unforgiving when it comes to attendance. Not a lot of teaching is done, she basically just goes over what you read in the ~15 pages you read from the textbook...every single class. She did offer extra credit... but only a 0.1% bonus.
The best biology prof I've had here at UNC. makes lectures super engaging and is super active in getting students involved. Tests are fair if you keep up with homework/reading
Dr. Ott is great -- very enthusiastic and fair. Her tests reflect what we learn in class. She taught the first half of the class and I think set me up for a great foundation to do well in the class overall. Great professor!
Dr. Ott is the best bio professor I've had -- she is fair, engaging, and very kind. Her tests reflect what is covered in class and if you do the work and use the resources she provides for you, you'll do fine.
Dr. Ott is really enthusiastic and great at explaining concepts in lectures. Best bio professor I've had at UNC!
At first I was not a big fan of Laura Ott. But her passion and Enthusiasm made biol 202 a tolerable class. In term of exams, they are easy. In fact biol202 is prob the easiest class at unc under her. But also beware she over shares lol
Difficult and will take up A LOT of time. Ott will like you more if you answer questions in class and get good grades. Shemer's class would be better to take. Ott teaches extra topics that aren't necessary. You can't just memorize for this class, you have to be able to apply the info. Quizzes basically every friday. Exams 75% of grade. Hw due MWF
Dr. Ott is fair and very well respected. Her lectures are engaging and challenge you to think. Her exams are tough, but she is good about dropping questions that are flawed or unfair. She sticks by what is clearly outlined in the syllabus, which I really appreciate because it shows how fair and straightforward she is. She is a solid choice.
She wasn't my favorite professor, but I don't think she's as bad as some people say she is. She can be unprofessional at times, but she is fair with how she handles exams and will drop bad questions. She also provides lots of resources and if you use them, you'll be fine.
Don't get me wrong this class is hard. Dr. Ott did a great job teaching the class and was very kind and understanding. She had a ton of resources, would spend lots of time with students going over practice problems in office hours, and had great activities in class to make you learn. Tests are hard, but fair (no surprises).
Dr. Ott wants you to think she cares. However, that is only true for a select few. Very passive aggressive, not willing to answer questions, not widely accessible outside class, and relies heavily on peer mentors. Beware of "select all" questions with no partial credit and no low stakes practice for tests. Dr. Ott? More like "Dr. Opp."
Great class and great professor! She provides a lot of resources and if you use them, you'll do fine. She can be direct, but that didn't bother me because there are a lot of students in the class that she has a lot to manage. Dr. Ott was also one of the most understanding professors I had when it came to the events early in the semester.
Dr. Ott is one of the most condescending professors that I have had the unfortunate displeasure of taking a class with. The information of the class was bearable but whenever you need something from her, it always seems like she is talking down on you. If you have the chance to take a class with her, do yourself a favor and don't.
If you like immunology, this is a good option. Independent learning outside of class, finishing that topic in class. First unit was a LOT and it went quick, but the class got better afterwards. Exams have group and individual portions, the individual ones are hard but there is extra credit. Group case study was manageable and interesting.
Dr. Ott was a good professor for 103 and included a lot of time to work with the people at your table instead of lecturing for 50 minutes straight. The content is difficult and it did seem to jump around at times, but the grading is very forgiving if you score poorly on an exam or a quiz and you can tell that Ott is passionate about the subject.
I have taken ott before in 101 and 252 and really enjoyed her teaching style but in 103 the I felt a disconnect between the exams and lectures. Often felt like she overcomplicated ideas and explained too many exceptions making you confused on the exams. Not the worst course ever but would have preferred clearer teaching.
Dr. Ott is a great professor. She is great at explaining concepts. However, beware of trick questions on quizzes and tests.
She is a good professor, but this class is just God-awful. It's just BIOL101 with a few extra facts, which makes for an extremely boring class. It's a made-up class that UNC forces students to take to get into higher level Bio classes. But if you need to take it, take it with Ott. Exams were easy and every type of problem was covered in lecture.
Dr. Ott is a great lecturer and really knows what she is talking about. She also dropped lowest grades and there are lots of assignments to split the weight more evenly, definitely recommend for 103.
She's nice but at times, impatient/passive aggressive. She wasn't great at clearing up confusion and she relied too heavily on peer mentors, who couldn't even answer very well. If you have ADHD/read too fast, prepare for confusing exam/quiz questions. The content is easy, so if you study and are careful during exams, you can do well in the class.
I really liked this class. Everything is achievable, just pay attention. Lowest scores in some categories get dropped (test, hw, quiz).
Good professor, I have had her for 3 bio classes now and gotten okay grades. Her voice is mad annoying and her jokes are rough. However she cares a lot and is clearly knowledgeable about the topics, but sometimes it seems that she has trouble formulating her ideas into effective material.
For starters, Dr. Ott is a super nice lady. Sadly, she isn't nearly as good at teaching as she is at being nice. I find myself not learning anything in class. Lectures aren't helpful, and she just puts questions on the board to discuss with people who are just as lost. I'm hoping things get better, but I feel helpless with her leading the class.
Refuses to provide a copy of lecture slides, so half the class is scrambling to write down content instead of listening to what she's saying. Exam questions do not test on knowledge of content but instead are written to trick us. Median on the first midterm was a 74 AFTER 10 bonus points were added and 7 questions dropped (out of 27). Dr. Opp fr
The first exam in this course was really hard but she is offering us 8 points of extra credit to bring our grade up (and still drops the lowest exam).
Assigned seats for a massive lecture, if you care about that. Leaves some rows empty so she can walk through them, and ensure that you, 5 feet from her, can hear her yelling into her mic. You get a cheat sheet so exams are mostly trick questions and mental acrobatics around A, B, A&B, C, none, or all...long GRQs but caring teacher w/ many resources
Quality of teaching is contingent upon her personal interest in the subject. Her exams and quizzes are poorly worded and she deweights a ton of questions because of ambiguity. Your success in this class is dependent on your ability to regurgitate what she says, not necessarily based on correctness. Very patronizing and arrogant, NOT your advocate.
Decent professor, I have had her for 2 bio classes and have done well in both. Unfortunately, she kind of does a yell-talk type lecture that can get a bit annoying. I have felt like she can be condescending to students that she does not have a formed relationship with. Exams are hilarious... dropping questions every exam is a indicative sign!
bruh how can someone talk about nephrons and the kidneys without mentioning the loop of henle.
She is one of the few professors who listens to feedback from students and acts on it. For example, she asked us ways she could support our learning and me and others said additional practice problems. She provided us a set and it was very helpful for the exam. The class is still really hard, but she does seem to care.
This Rhinoceros with her inflated ego, believes she's a genius, but she's a malodorous emission. MAKE sure to catch this before it disappears, due to her habit of deleting reviews. the self-obsession with reviews is just sad + pitiful. It's clear she's delusional and consumed by her image, offering nothing professional. wondering how she got hired.
GREAT TEACHER for students who would love to fail in the future. TAKE HER! She is amazingly cringe to the point where you just stop paying attention in class due to her ENTHUSIASM for nonsense unrelated stuff she keeps yapping about in class.
I had Ott for both BIOL 103 and currently have her BIOL 252. She is the best! The classes are hard, but if you use the resources that she provides and attend class, you'll do fine. She is one of the nicer professors I've had -- I wish I could have her for all of my STEM courses.
exams are your only grade. exams are not easy and everyone failed the first exam since the average was F. Honestly if everyone did badly that means they were not able to learn or rather the teacher was not able to teach. Just take gidi he is better.
poorly structured class. The notes are all over the place and she makes you read but nothing from there will be on the exam. Exam questions are formatted in a messy way that doesn't make sense and that showed when everyone in the class failed it.
There are so many fake reviews on this teacher saying she is good BEWARE because this class is the worst class I have ever taken here. She doesn't know what she is doing. super lousy and unorganized teacher. she screams so much in class it's annoying
Dr. Ott is a refreshing professor who genuinely wants her students to succeed. Although the lectures are content-heavy and the GRQs long, her personality made me look forward to her class! Office hours are super helpful, and she loves to expand beyond the borders of content to discuss careers and research. Pro tip - don't wait to do the work!
Most of the reading she leaves isn't useful for exams. Mostly you have to learn what she teaches in the lecture and then apply it to the exams. This can be difficult since most of the questions you have to select more than one answer. She mentioned that she plans to eliminate cheat sheets next semester, as she thinks they do not help in learning.
If you do all of the GRQ's and take thorough notes, you will do well in the class. Her exams were poorly written, but Dr. Ott provided extra credit and would de-weight questions when needed. The depth of the content depended on her interest in the topic. She could be condescending at times, but that is how many STEM professors are.
absolutely awful she is so condescending and her tests are 100x harder than the quizzes and homework DO NOT TAKE BIOL 103 WITH HER!!! makes it impossible to learn because she constantly contradicts herself and is worse at being a teacher than the grad students that came to sub for her.
The only negative feedback I agree with is that Dr. Ott is loud. Otherwise, she is a good professor. The class is hard, but she provides resources, deweights hard questions on exams, and gives extra credit.
Her exams were(barely)balanced out by giving extra credit. It seems like she's trying to be hard on students for no valid reason. Her exams were either too explicitly worded or not specific enough, and when requesting regrades, you get no reasoning even if the question is clearly poor. Dr. Ott is a fun personality, but take Dr. Shemers' class.
She expects you to know everything, is rude to students who ask questions, and makes this class far more difficult than it needs to be. If you can avoid this class at all PLEASE DO!!!!!!! she is the worst professor I have had at UNC.
The midterms are really hard. On quizzes and exams she makes intentional trick questions. It is nice that you have a cheat sheet but a lot of times it doesn't even help when the questions are worded terribly. She focuses too much on specific details/questions in lecture without providing a broader understanding of the material.
Dr. Ott enjoys her job and teaching but assumes a lot about students and dismisses many who ask questions. Her exams are tricky and mostly graded on midterms and one final. She offers extra credit, but could focus more on helping students.
This was one of my favorite classes and I loved Dr. Ott. If you use the resources that she provides, you'll do fine. I met with her in office hours at the beginning of the semester and she gave me some great tips that really helped me to improve my grades in the course.
This class stressed me out because the questions on the tests were not predictable and I felt like I was forced to hyper-focus on random details instead of broader concepts. I will say the final was significantly easier than the midterms (especially the first one which I absolutely tanked). Also, she's NOT ALLOWING CHEAT SHEETS NEXT SEM
I'm gonna be real. This is my second class with Dr. Ott and I think a lot of y'all straight up aren't following her instructions/listening to her advice. If you do the GRQs diligently, show up to class and dedicate time to actively learning the material instead of trying to memorize, you'll do well. She deweights questions and gives extra credit.
Definitely knows her stuff but exams are insanely difficult. Even if you have a great understanding of the content, the exams test your ability to comprehend a question rather than how well you know the information. Each quiz and exam was mostly trick questions and it often felt like she wanted to make the course as hard as possible for no reason.
Exams are SO difficult and try to trick you. She is not very accessible nor are the lectures helpful. Rely's too heavily of TA's and peer discussion before teaching herself first. Exams are very unpredictable and SHE IS NOT ALLOWING CHEAT SHEETS NEXT SEMESTER!!
I didn't like this class at first, but it ended up being my favorite class. The exams are hard, but if you actually use the resources Dr. Ott provides and pay attention in class, you will do fine. I also thought she was really engaging and this wasn't a class where I was bored.
Prof. Ott was great. This class was hard for me, but she made it manageable. Lots of opportunities to succeed and drops a decent number of low grades. She truly cared about our well being and success. I recommend her so much. She is very fair. With a lot of work you can definitely do well in this class.
In BIOL103, there's Dr. Ott, full of glee, With cringe jokes, and kids roaming free. Her trick questions sly, sometimes a bit too much, Misleading at times, on the final I had to clutch. So beware, dear student, in this academic fray, BIOL103's challenges, tread carefully, I say.
Dr. Ott was a really good professor that made sure key concepts were stressed continuously throughout the semester, which helped me maintain information for the final. Exams were hard, but everything tested is stressed by lecture slides and learning objectives. She also de-weights confusingly worded questions.
Good Professor and explained things very well. Only thing I didnt like was that every test had one or two questions that were worded very badly. Overall tests weren't too bad though.
She is a great lecturer and explains the course material very well. However, her exams can be very tough and the questions are often not worded the best.
The course content itself is not hard to understand as a whole. However, Dr. Ott teaches the concepts in a nonlinear way that is hard to understand if you don't reorder it yourself. GRQs were a waste of time and lectures could be confusing at times. Pay attention to the lecture slides when studying. She is getting rid of cheat sheets soon - beware.
Dr. Ott was great- her lectures were engaging and informative, though she would often overshare and have an annoying Northern accent. The tests were insane and unreasonably difficult (which is unavoidable in 252), but Dr. Ott would give partial credit and drop questions to make up for it. If you lock in and study hard, you'll get an A.
Good professor. I had a good study group. Sit in the first two rows if possible, and participate! Available during office hours for questions, and peer instructors are accessible as well. Stay on top of the material by doing a half decent job on the pre-work, attend lecture and take notes, then make a summary sheet and redo practice after class.
TIPS TO SURVIVE 252: focus on rewatching lectures & learning objectives ONLY! Dont waste time on the book (google the hw) or SI/LA sessions. Take practice exams & quizzes seriously Ott sucks bc of her chaotic lectures, rudeness, & mid SIs/LAs. The 5/5 reviews are prob ppl who sucked up to her for some reason. Take 252 separate from lab.
Test questions = mind game. Terribly worded and it is more a reading comprehension class than biology. Every rating about her passive aggressiveness is true. Tries to be kind but it always comes off rude. Not doing cheat sheets anymore. Drops lowest test score. Doesn't believe in extra credit. "It's okay if you're wrong" = lie. Avoid if possible.
Dr. Ott was a great professor. I learned a lot from this class and she gives very engaging and informative lectures. However, the tests took a little getting used to, so definitely look out for trick questions and trick wording. Other than that the class was good, be ready to put some time into studying and making one pagers.
This professor does not care about her students and likes to make assumptions
Tough class and prepare to work had outside of class for an A
This was one of my favorite classes (and first biology class). It's a lot of work, especially in the summer, but if you do the work, you'll do fine in the class. Before each exam, she would spend time during office hours going through complex problems that were very similar to what we'd see on exams.
Dr. Ott tries her best to relate to her students, but it does not compensate for her lack of teaching skills. She over-complicates lessons that could be explained in a much simpler manner. Every time I asked a question, it seemed like she thought I was challenging her. After a few times I got discouraged to reach out.
Had the worst time in her class due to her tendency to contradict things she had already taught and her awful humor. Makes the test 10x harder and expects you to know things she has not taught. Relies heavily on TAs who can't even answer questions. Blamed our bad test scores on us and refused to acknowledge that maybe it was her awful teaching.
Super hard class if you're not talented at biology.
I would not recommend, felt like I was teaching myself all the content. She seemed upset when people would ask questions so made me feel lost, when I was struggling. I would try to go to SI but she even got upset with them when a test question was worded poorly and they asked her about it. Overall not a nice person and a worse teacher.
She tries to be relatable but ends up being super condescending and she loves having trick questions on the quizzes. It feels like I prepared hard for her class only to be disappointed.
Professor Ott's class is challenging but rewarding. The exams require careful attention, but utilizing resources like lecture slides and the textbook can really help. Unstuck ai was also a lifesaver for test prep.
Do not take a class with her. She is an extremely confusing lecturer and uses counterintuitive explanations. Numerous grammatical errors on exams and GRQs. Seems to delete reviews she interprets as scurrilous. She should have a much lower rating.
The exams are literally riddles. You may do poorly on the exams even if you understand the content. Her teaching isn't even the problem: the lecture was engaging and the content was not difficult. The GRQ's were too much work given that we don't even refer to them at any point.
She is a good professor in terms of teaching you the content. You can do the practice exams, study and draw out the content but then when you take the exam its like solving a riddle of what must be true, false etc. Its not actually testing you on concepts rather, testing your ability to solve word problems and keep the average at a c
BIOL 103 has been my favorite class this semester and Dr. Ott is a good professor. Tests are application of what is taught in lecture. Pay attention, go to office hours, do the practice exams. I got an A on all of the exams.
BIOL 103 with Dr. Ott was great! Her grading policies are super understanding. The tests can be difficult, but if you learn how she words questions and read carefully they aren't too bad. She was super helpful when I needed help on harder concepts. I would highly recommend Dr. Ott for 103!!
I like the way Dr. Ott has set up her class. She is a little hard to swallow at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly. If you buy into active learning, it is a much better experience/course. Read the exam questions carefully. She writes them to test content advanced application, not memorization. GRQs are lengthy and could be shorter.
Dont get me wrong, this class is hard. Do the work and use the resources and you'll do fine. I think she generally cares and has fairly flexible grading policies.
She assumed we had some pre-existing knowledge about biology. Lectures were more about reviewing the content rather than teaching, which was frustrating for someone who has not taken biology classes. The exams were fair, but the wording was very tricky-a lot of unnecessary deception. She offers some extra credit for course evaluations.
Laura is the most condescending and rude professors I have ever had at UNC. She targets certain students she does not like and treats them terribly if they ask questions in class. Her lessons are scattered and her quizzes are tough.
She thinks she is funny and relatable, but she just comes off a rude and demeaning. The exams are unnecessarily complicated. Take garland if possible. Rating way to high, spends more time talking about Milo (her dog) than teaching
Tough class, but doable if you go to class and do the work. Ott is annoying, but she's not horrible like people make her out to be.
Exam difficulty is over-exaggerated, questions are application-based but not as bad as others make them out to be. Very generous amount of grades are dropped, including a midterm grade. GRQs/mastering are not helpful, focus on lecture slides to study.
Exams aren't too hard, nor is content. However, she can be incredibly rude and mean to students in lecture and office hours. Her class was much worse because of how she acted.
Don't listen to any of the negative comments about Dr. Ott. Worked with me when I had to miss class due to personal emergency and has flexible grading - drops lowest exam and quiz s. and Great class and great professor!
Not a very good professor, dosent really teach you anything. Have to teach yourself with flipped classroom. Exams cover PowerPoints but she makes it all mostly true or one part is wrong so all is wrong partial credit types. I would take garland, she was better than ott when I had her last semester, also a lot friendlier. Dr ott is rude
She was not very approachable during office hours, she would give learning strategies rather than answer your questions, overall I got a very judgey vibe. Also the exams are a freaking riddle, and she offers regrade requests but good luck telling her she wrote the exam wrong
Not a very enjoyable class. Felt like AP Bio just unnecessarily harder. Dr. Ott's tests aren't easy and often feel designed to trick you. She's quite accessible and helpful though. Not the worst, just not the best.
Dr. Ott was consistently being so condescending and rude to students. The course was ridiculously difficult. Although difficult courses are unavoidable at UNC, avoiding an extremely difficult course paired with a rude professor is always recommended. Steer clear of this course! Better options at UNC are available, Dr. Ott should be avoided.
Overall, the class is structured well. Sometimes learning catalytics questions were unfair, but she does knock off a lot of points in the end + your lowest midterm grade. Tests and quizzes were fair - if you just look over the slides you should be fine. GRQ and Mastering hw don't really help as much for test preparation.
Dr. Ott was a good lecturer, but she was very sassy. It's almost impossible to get all the notes going to lecture so make sure to watch the recordings after. Beware of TAs and LAs watching you during exams, I got accused of cheating 🙄. Nevertheless, the tests were fair, just make sure to study and use all the resources available.
My only complaint about this class is the GRQs and Mastering seem like busy work, especially since all of the exam questions come from lecture. Your lowest midterm and a handful of quizzes are dropped. Ott is a solid choice.
Explains things WAY more complicated than they need to be. Learning catalytics for participation. HEAVY on flipped class format. have to teach yourself. test questions often try to trick you. did offer 4 extra credit points for course eval on final and cheat sheet. kinda annoying voice and VERY loud, didn't even need mic. little condescending.
Although the material wasn't too difficult, she tends to talk down on students regularly and designs test questions to trick you. It's definitely possible to do well but there's other professors who'd respect you more as a student.
This class was an extension of AP Bio and I think Ott did a good job teaching it. She offers a ton of practice problems that if you work them and understand the answers you will be prepared for the exams.
Bio 103 is a challenging class regardless of who teaches it. I utilized the resources at the learning center and they really helped me. Dr Ott is a caring person, I think she just really emphasizes student independence and it can come off the wrong way. Taking good notes in class is super important, no cheat sheets but we got on one the final.
Professor Ott was great. I enjoyed her lectures and thought she was very informed in the course content. Sometimes the lectures would get boring, but she was very clear as to what was expected in the course.
Does not care about student success and frankly if her students live or die. Always concerned with her personal matters without thinking others may experience life struggles too. Unprofessional control of her anger towards students and takes revenge on entire classes for singular students ill-choices. Confusing and unintuitive lecturer as well.
bro she will yell at you at 9:30 in the morning, every morning. she also lost her marbles at multiple students when they were trying to turn in their exams because they took out their phones before they left the exam hall. her class isn't hard shes just irritating.
Laura Ott made BIOL 103 more difficult than what it needed to be. She was very condescending when you meet with her one-on-one and all she talks about is her research. BIOL 103 is not a difficult class, but was made more difficult because of her failure to teach the material and her condescending nature.
Does not seem to care about students. Extremely condescending, makes the class more difficult then it needs to be and also takes her bad mood out on students. Content is not difficult, exams are not necessarily hard but they are clearly meant to trick you rather than assess your actual understanding. Voice is really annoying.
She's good, not great. She has clearly communicated expectations and her exams are fair and based on what we cover in class. If you pay attention and use the resources, you'll be fine. She doesn't always handle students who don't follow the instructions well, but that's also on them -- they are clearly communicated.
Favorite professor in biology. Class isn't easy, but if you use the resources she makes available, you'll do fine. Ott expects a lot from students, but gives flexibility to make mistakes that others don't like dropping lowest exam.
Had her for 103! I like her! She can sometimes be direct and mean, but it's nothing crazy. Just don't do anything weird/bad. Tests were hard for me, but not impossible, with lots of prep. Had 3 midterms (lowest dropped) and the final. HW before each class and optional GRQs, but highly recommend if you want to succeed. Lots of pre-class reading.
i have had ott for 103 and 252 and shes always just been mid. she seems like a fun person outside of class but in class she can be so mean omg. im not one to dislike teachers but every class she somehow makes it easier to dislike her a little bit more😅 content is easy but tests are genuinely so confusing for no reason. she makes me feel so stupid
She is extremely condescending, and she does not answer questions. She has failed many students for having their phones in their back pockets when leaving the exam room. She also gives assigned seats in a lecture hall.
If you pay attention and do the work, this class is easy. She is annoying, but a good teacher and drops questions that are unfair. Just pay attention to her guidelines - she will bust you if you have your cell phone out during exams.
There is a lot of content, but it's truly not too bad if you are able to dedicate several of hours a week to work. Dr Ott is an okay professor & is good at communicating content, but tends to overshare about her personal life which can be uncomfortable. Exam questions are also worded in the most confusing way possible.
Confusing test questions.
I got an A on all of the exams -- class is a lot of work, but if you pay attention and use the resources, you will do fine. I have heard that the final exam is easy and she is allowing us a cheat sheet on the final, so I am anticipating an A in the class. I would definitely recommend.
Dr. Ott is a passionate professor. Her intentions mostly seem innocent, but she frequently gets impatient and/or can embarrass a student for not knowing something/asking a question. Many are scared to ask her questions out of fear of being ridiculed. I don't believe that she wants us to feel this way, but this is how she presents herself.
Not sure how caring doctor Ott is but she is a good professor. She gives clear criteria for what you need to do to pass her class. She's a little rude to students sometimes but if you don't take it personally you'll be fine. Just do what she says to do and the class is good. Participation does count and you have GRQs and quizzes for every lesson.
The review from 4/22/25 just wants to flex their grade… her exams are worded weird and if u ever try to ask for clarification or questions she is very short flamed. Also every lesson ends up as a pity party for her it's like she purposely makes her lessons so that she can add in her own personal sob story in relation to the unit. she's also so loud
She can be a little passive-aggressive at times, and I thought the exams were created to trick me. :( However, she was very enthusiastic, so she was alright.
Do not expect her ever to answer any questions on Piazza or her emails.
Take this class with literally anyone else. This class isn't supposed to be hard at all, but she has split up her grading scale to make it impossible to even get an A-. There's not a single category in the gradebook you are guaranteed 100% in (even participation)! It's like she purposely made this class impossible for no reason.
Writes unnecessarily hard midterms, and exams are much harder than content discussed in class. Lecture heavy with a lot of assignments, and attendance is mandatory.
bio 103 was one of the hardest classes I have taken and not because the subject material is difficult. dr. ott is not the best at explaining although she does know her stuff. also she yelled at someone during an exam in front of the class for no reason. the exams are hard with lots of trick questions. I switched my major after taking this class.
The weekly assignments are long and a PITA. Profs for other classes manage to assign homework that covers similar amounts of content without assigning huge, unhelpful, unengaging documents of fill-in-the-blanks. Also, I personally do not vibe with her lecture style. She seems to think yelling louder into the mic = teaching more clearly.
She writes questions as though she is the riddler when the material is not difficult if you study. Going to class is important in order to get the material, but she struggles to teach it in a way that is helpful to you. So would I say she is a good teacher, no, but if you go to class and do alot of studying outside of lecture, you will do fine.
DO NOT TAKE. Worst professor I've had at UNC. Genuinely doesn't know A&P or how to teach it. Students would call her out on errors bc she didn't know what she was saying. Exams are worded so confusing for NO reason and have few Qs. Made me hate this class and the bio dept as a whole. Would rather transfer schools than take another class with her.
Convinced she writes her own good reviews on here. Worst professor, very condescending, even worse than Garland tbh. I had a good knowledge of anatomy prior in but did poorly on the tests bc her questions were so horribly written. Not guaranteed a 100 on participation even if you attend every lecture. Would not recommend taking her class to ANYONE
Childish, rude, loud. Maybe thinks she is a celeb? Exams/quizzes poorly written, making them hard. Often says things wrong or backwards. For immune system, she skipped a lot of material that is needed for tests like MCAT. She had things come up a lot in personal life and asked us to be understanding, but wasn't when I had stuff come up. Steer clear
i swear she centers her lessons around her sob stories so that she can make sure everyone knows
Ott isn't bad at teaching by any means, but her exams are more about reading her crazy wording and making up insane scenarios than about any actual Biology content. You could know everything and still do awful on her exams. Don't recommend.
Terrible. Screams in the microphone and asks everyone to be patient with her but is never patient with others. Thinks she is a celebrity?
Do not take this with Ott. Thinks she is better than everyone and is not a good lecturer.
Good organization and I thought Dr. Ott was fair. The exams were tough but doable and she provides a multiple practice problems. She is loud, but I found her engaging and would take a class with her again.
Honestly, I don't understand the bad rep Ott gets. Anatomy is just a hard, content heavy course with a lot of information, and if you are pre-health taking many of the other pre-reqs it can be a lot to manage but it's doable. Her midterms were fair and were definitely skewed more towards lectures rather than GRQs.
I think Dr. Ott had some pretty good lectures. She did explain some complicated topics pretty well. Her office hours were also helpful. However, she is a touch sensitive and can sometimes be a bit dense with students. Just don't ask any questions that you think she would view as silly, because she might just say "we went over this." Good, not great
Do not take Ott. Extremely rude and disrespectful to her students. Test questions are so hard even if you know all of the material by heart. Take Biology with anyone else.
Very homework heavy class with lots of reading. But as long as you pay attention in lecture and come to class prepared, you will do fine. As for Dr. Ott herself, she seems nice in lecture but she can be very condescending and rude if she is in a bad mood, especially during 1-1 conversation.
I felt that a lot of this class built on what I learned in AP Biology. Ott was a good professor and was direct, but fair overall. Exams were tough, but lots of resources are provided.
literally horrible. don't listen to all the reviews and steer clear. was more concerned with her personal life than teaching and honestly knew next to nothing about anatomy and physiology.
dr. ott is condescending and makes her students feel beneath her. I went to her office hours a few times and she was so rude the whole time. her exams are felt more like reading comprehension exam than a biology exam. however, she is an AMAZING lecturer and I did learn a lot from her. she is a much better teacher than dr. garland.
Dr. Ott is a great lecturer, and I learned a lot. She is very condescending and does not help when you ask and question and just says it's not correct. To the most recent BIOL252 review, her mom has cancer. Of course, she is going to be more concerned with her personal life, and you would be too.
Dr. Ott can be curt sometime, but she really does care about her students success. She is a no BS type of teacher and teaches material very directly. Going to class is pretty much required to get a good grade. GRQs are optional, but you should do them. Hard to get caught up if you get behind as well.
Her exams have confusing questions and are difficult to do well on (I got 3 questions wrong and got a 90 on one). Weekly online quizzes that you can't miss or you get a 0. I had a lot of personal issues this semester and ended up not having time for some of the quizzes but she gave me no help. I would've gotten an A if I didn't miss these quizzes.
Dr. Ott is my favorite professor in Biology and I had her for 103 and 252. I agree that she can be direct, but she's not mean. She is very clear about her expectations and I thought all of her exams were very fair and based on what she covered in lecture. She drops the lowest midterm in both classes.
This is in my top 3 least favorite classes at UNC. She isn't super considerate towards students. Plenty of times she has cut students off while they ask a question or while answering one of her questions, regardless if the answer is right/wrong. She will literally say "nope!" or "no agreement" or "wrong!" when students share an answer in class.
I took Ott & Garland. Ott was a better lecturer for sure, but the tests sucked. More reading comprehension than anything else. Lots of select multiple, all, and none of the above. They dropped the lowest midterm and gave 4 points EC on the final, but the tests still weren't really fair. You'll be teaching yourself in this class.
I was in the co-taught section with Dr. Garland and Dr. Ott. They are both great professors, but definitely have different styles, especially for tests. Dr. Ott's are more application while Dr. Garland's are more memorization. Dr. Ott was great during office hours. The tests are difficult, so be prepared to study.
I love Dr. Ott. I had her for 103 and loved her, so I took her again for 252. I knew I would love the content, but I really enjoyed her lectures. Exams were tough but I felt like they matched the learning objectives fairly and were similar to questions asked in class. I even liked her assigned seat system (ik) bc the consistency was helpful for me
Was in the Co-Taught Section. Otts personality is very abrasive… but a better lecturer than Garland. Exam 2 with her was a nightmare. Wish she had stayed for the full semester.
most people who say her exams are hard took AP bio — imo if you took BIOL101 here at UNC BIOL103 with ott is ALOT more straightforward. she is really annoying and condescending (one of my friends switched out of her section cos he couldn't physically stand her voice) and her quizzes have trick questions. overall ALOT OF work but lots of materials.
This class is super content heavy, and the exams are made to trick you. Ott was an ok prof, but she was rude to students and her lecturing style often annoyed me. Pretty much all homework is useless busy work and not relevant to what you need for exams. Focus on lectures, practice exams, and peer mentor resources and you'll be fine.
Ott gets a bad rep but she's really good. Students struggling in the class (this is a HARD class) struggle because of the material/course, not because of her. Sometimes takes questions off tests or quizzes cus they were wrong. LOTS OF MEMORIZATION but you also apply it. Unless its the final no cheat sheet (but she provides diagrams for exams).
My favorite class at UNC. The content is HARD, and there's lots of memorization -- but it's possible and you got it. Lowest exam grade was dropped, GRQs were useless and I never did them. LOTS OF MEMORIZATION but you also need to know how to apply the stuff you memorize. You make no cheat sheets except for the final but she gives one for exams.
Dr. Ott can be condescending and rude at times and even though she takes the flipped classroom to the extreme, her lectures are very helpful for the exams. I also had Dr. Garland, and exams are hard no matter who you have, but I thought Ott's teaching style was more appropriate for an introductory course and better prepared me for exams.
Take 103 with a different professor. Lectures were so boring, plus we had assigned seats that made class even worse.
There are three exams and one gets dropped; she does have “flexibility” thing where she drops a certain (1-2) number of assignments but they don't apply to certain ones so make sure to stay on top of due dates
Pros: Dr. Ott is very thorough on content, lectures are engaging. The mastering HW was fine. 3 exams, Lowest dropped. Final was cumulative and hard. Cons: tests are very semantics heavy, not only do you have to know the material inside and out, you also need to decipher what Dr. Ott is trying to ask you. Her voice gets on some people's nerves.
Despite personal struggles throughout the SP25 semester, Dr. Ott still deeply cared for her students and taught concepts clearly. The class builds in repetition to solidify important concepts. Practice exams and lots of problems are great preparation for exams. GRQs are not exceptionally useful. Dropped exam :))) But they are pretty challenging.
Don't do it
Concepts weren't necessarily that hard but lectures and exams were super confusing. GRQs were long and useless. This class is more about interpretation and analysis rather than memorization.
Solidified my love for bio. Cares so much for her students and makes lectures actually interesting. Witty and fun which makes it exciting to go to class. She gives me the motivation to learn and understand all the biological concepts. Class isn't hard if you don't fall behind and keep up with the readings and pay attention in lecture.
I don't even know where to start honestly. She's smart and good at what she does, but she's so rude and backhanded at times that it negates the former. I didn't enjoy lectures, homeworks, and DEFINITELY not the exams.. very difficult and she loves to include trick questions. The material was somewhat interesting but the experience... frustrating.
So tricky, she purposely makes exams super hard.
I feel the way Ott teaches some concepts makes them more confusing than they should be. Instead of explaining what each concept is, she instead goes through participation questions (graded for accuracy) and complicated examples, which are more confusing rather than helpful. Her lectures have a lot of group work though, which makes it interesting.
Had her last semester and she was a horrible professor. First, professor to ever make me cry.
This class is unnecessarily difficult. I swear to god the amount of times I have been screwed over by the wording of her questions is unreal. I am sorry, but this class is absolutely not it. Avoid if you can.
She is direct and doesn't take crap from students, but I think she's effective and generally understanding if you seriously have things going on. Exams are hard, but all her questions come from class. She also drops the lowest exam and is allowing us a cheat sheet on the final exam.
I thought this course was very doable. I did the homework and made Anki decks from the slides she provided in class. Overall, very great and entertaining lectures, would highly recommend! Just study and definitely do the practice exams, she bases a lot of her questions similar to them, especially the final.
Don't skip 101, especially if you are a freshman. She's amazing at teaching, but exams are super tricky and there is a TON of work to do outside of class. The exams are weighted very heavily (48% midterm, 24% final). There are many resources outside of class, so it isn't impossible to do well. If you have to take this class, take it with Dr. Ott.
Her exams are weighted very, and i mean VERY heavily. However, your lowest midterm is dropped. I would watch out for how she phrases the questions on the exam. I also would strongly advise to drop everything (like don't even take notes when you're doing the GRQs) and to just pay the most attention to the slides.
Biol 103 is a deceptively hard class. It's interesting, however there's a lot of busy work (useless/unhelp GRQs imo, more useful Pearson assignments. I learned everything needed in lecture. That + quizzes & practice tests helped me do well. Tests are difficult though: questions are hard to understand and correct answers feel ambiguous.
Ott, in my opinion, isn't the best lecturer. It could be my learning style, but all the material appears very vague and disorganized. The homework and assignments are completely unrelated to class content, and I've had to teach myself the entire course. That being said, the course is fairly easy, except for the reading comprehension exams.
Dr. Ott has been one of my favorite professors at UNC so far. In my opinion, she is a clear lecturer (mostly) and has a lenient grading policy, as she drops the lowest midterm and several other homework assignments. Dr. Ott is also very accesible outside of class, offering both group and individual office hours. I would take another class with her!
Would recommend taking with Dr. Ott! Her lectures are pretty engaging and straightforward. Everything that is on the test is covered in her slides. She is also pretty accessible outside of class for extra help. Tests are pretty heavily weighted but they aren't too bad in terms of difficulty and she also drops a midterm. GRQ's are time consuming.
Dr. Ott is super smart and great at her job but can be a bit condescending. Going through the lecture slides is by far the best way to study. GRQs were long and not always helpful, but it was nice to be told exactly what sections of the text to focus on. Lots of drops for lowest quizzes etc. and lowest midterm is dropped too.
Dr. Ott is very kind and approachable. Lectures were engaging, but exams were full of trick questions that did not always feel like she was testing your knowledge of a concept. Heavy emphasis on molecular techniques. GRQs took forever and were honestly useless.
Her class was somewhat overwhelming, but Ott does a good job of making it manageable. I think she was really nice and was engaging throughout the class. Her exams are quite challenging, but everything has been covered in class, so review the class slides and quizzes, and you should be fine.
Dr. Ott is not a bad professor, and this class is NOT easy. She is very caring and easy to reach outside of class, but can be very passive-aggressive. Exams sometimes feel like they're completely unrelated to class content, and GRQs are often unnecessarily lengthy with little connection to class content. Review lecture slides to do best on exams.
I found her pretty passive aggressive and sassy. 103 is quite challenging for an introductory-level bio class. Her office hours were very helpful, though.
This class is hard, but doable if you pay attention and use the resources. Exams came from lecture and there were no surprises. Drops your lowest midterm and allows a cheat sheet on the final exam. Ott is direct with students, but I found her to be kind.
Didn't love her at first, but as the semester went on she really grew on me. May seem a bit intense but you can tell she really cares about her students and I felt like exams were about as fair as they could be. She will try to trick you pretty frequently, but I felt like the lecture style did a great job of preparing me for the exams.
dr. ott's class was challenging, but her lectures were engaging and the workload was manageable. GRQs were long and sometimes unrelated to what we were learning. she drops quite a few grades at the end, including the lowest midterm, but exams are still weighted very heavily. even if content on the exam was easy, her wording made it a bit confusing.
Professor Ott's lectures can be really monotonous and boring, but her grading criteria are clear, her tests are fair, and she answers questions clearly. Attendance is weird as the points are partially based on accuracy, but overall it's not bad. You might not love going to class, but if you do, you should do pretty well.
Ott is a very respectable professor, especially for 103. It's definitely exam-heavy; however, her exams were very fair and rarely deviated from content we went over in class. The GRQs had a lot of irrelevant content, but they weren't terrible. One midterm is dropped and she offers lot of study resources, which is awesome!
It is clear Dr. Ott cares about her students. This class was not easy, but I found the tests to be very fair. Her lectures are recorded, and she explains concepts well. The only thing I'd change are the GRQs, which are unecessarily long and sometimes not super relevant.
People give Dr. Ott a hard time, but she's a great teacher. You can get an A in this class if you study the slides and do practice data analysis questions. Wording can be tricky on exams but I'd say she was fair. One exam is dropped but study hard for the 1st one because its the easiest and you can do really well.
This class has a lot of content but making sure you understand the slides and how to answer questions on the practice exams can help you succeed! Ask questions in class, participation helps to understand the material. Going to her group office hours was very helpful. She gives good explanations and analogies to help you understand the material.
