Amazing and adorable professor. She's very clear about what she wants you to know and provides lots of practice problems. Her lectures are precise and to the point (with some very cute jokes). Exams are extremely fair. As a person she's very easy going and extremely friendly. Take the classes with her! :)
Such a great prof! She is such a nice person and is easily approachable. She explains things clearly, and is straight to the point. Also, her little awkward jokes here and there are hilarious!!
Wonderful prof! She is the yongest prof i have had and yet she does a very good job at teaching!! Very helpful, and very clear. I am happy to have her for both general chem and org chem.2
Hands down the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. She makes everything simple, logical and interesting. We're almost at the midterm and I have nothing even slightly negative to say about her.
One of the best profs I've had at Mcgill. This is the third chem class I've had with her (at least in part) and she is absolutely fabulous. She is engaging and makes everything unbelievably clear. She also always makes an appearance at every tutorial, lab etc which I think is nice. Makes Orgo feel like my easiest class!
Pavelka is the best! Best prof I've had at McGill so far. She is crystal clear, creates beautiful lecture slides, makes great use of the textbook and is extremely helpful in all ways. Wish she taught the whole course!
Laura is the most awesome prof. you'll EVER meet, she is REALLY clear and easy to understand, you walk out of class feeling like you don't even need to study, she will help you at any cost.
Have taken 3 classes with her -- SHE IS MCGILL'S BEST. IF YOU ARE NOT IN HER CLASS THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU. CHANGE YOUR MAJOR AND TAKE HER CLASSES. Even when the material is challenging, she has beautifully clear explanations. On the last day of class the lecture recordings for her sections always have the loudest cheers you can imagine.
The BEST CHEMISTRY PROF AT MCGILL! She should teach every chem course! Really clear in her explanations. Love her
I really like Dr pavelka as a Prof...and she's really fun
Dr. Pavelka is an awesome teacher. She makes it very clear as to what the point of every slide is. She's reasonable, and really funny! I wish I had all of my Chem courses with her!
Pavelka is wonderful! She managed to take a 700 person, required course on a less-than-fascinating subject and make it pretty enjoyable. She always does her best to keep the class engaged, even if it means making fun of herself. As a prof, she's very direct and clear about her expectations and her tests are true to the slides she has in class.
AMAZING PROF. So funny! Very clear, lots of examples, super helpful. So excited to take CHEM 212 with her!
Very nice and great prof - take her classes!
Very naive, she doesn't explain things like a professor. Kind of unprofessional. speaks so fast like she is reviewing not teaching!!! she thinks all students are PhD students not undergrad students. I dint enjoy the class.
Great prof! Really explains concepts well and provides lots of practice examples during lectures. I wish we had more time with her throughout the year.
AMAZING prof. Best prof I've had at McGill so far. Very engaging and approachable. She knows her stuff. Her midterm was really easy and her final was a little tough but doable. I enjoyed going to her class.
Fantastic prof. Her jokes are hilarious and uplift the class from the stream of seemingly dry materials of organic chemistry. She has great notes. Her exams are fair.
Awesome Prof. She is very nice, helpful and funny. She clearly cares about her students and her lectures. One of the best profs I've had at McGill
One of the best profs in McGill. Made learning organic chemistry fun. Highly recommended!
Prof. Pavelka is by far the best Chem prof I've had at McGill. She took a class I was nervous to take extremely enjoyable with her funny jokes and amazing slides with many examples. The tests are fair, and very similar to problems done in class or on previous years tests. Do the practice questions, go tolisten to lectures and you'll be fine
Probably the best professor in the chemistry department.
She's one of the best profs in McGill. She always makes the topic very easy to understand and she likes to use jokes to help us to remember the content.
I love this woman
PROs: EXTREMELY CLEAR. I skipped all her (due to studying for other midterms) lectures and watched her lecture recordings in less than 5 days before the midterm. Still got an A. Review her lecture slides and you'll be good. I didn't even touch my textbook. CONs: None!
Hands down the best prof I've had in McGill. Super passionate about what she's doing, has the capability of simplifying even the hardest content, loves sharing awkward chemistry jokes (tbh I find them hilarious) - basically the instructor everyone wishes they had. Exams are fair too if you understand everything she said in the lectures!
Org 1 is one of the easiest courses at mcgill because of her. Her notes are legendary.
Saving grace for Chem 110, by far the best lecturer of the three for Fall 2014. Extremely clear, very funny, you'll end up actually wanting to brave the cold to go to her lectures. Also beneficial since she teaches the most difficultconceptual section. Uses clicker questions and explains the answers clearly.
Professor Pavelka makes things super clear, and works through a lot of examples in class which is super helpful.
Pavelka was by far the best prof I had in my first semester. I was taking the class a year ahead and yet she made the material seem easy and inspired her students to learn. She's really funny too.
BEST PROF EVER!!! DO ANYTHING TO TAKE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY WITH HER!!! SHE WILL MAKE YOU ACE THIS COURSE SOOOO EASILY.
The nicest teacher I've ever had at McGill so far . She is extremely clear on top of being very sweet and humble. If you want clarification or are a little behind, she will always be free for a 1 to 1 meeting. Material is not hard, practice is the key.
She is the sweetest person ever and her lectures cover absolutely everything that will be on the final exam. You don't even have to bother reading the textbook. She only teaches one third of the class though.
Super cute and my favourite prof from first year! So nice and makes you want to attend lectures.
Professor Pavelka is a really good teacher and was in my opinion the best of the Gen Chem profs. Her lectures+lecture slides are very organized and helpful, and she makes it very clear what she will test on her exams. Attend lectures and do practice problems.
She is an amazing prof, who cares a lot about her students. I took her class during the summer and it was definitely worth it. She's super approachable and very willing to help - her exams can be a bit tricky but not on purpose. Put in the hard work of doing practice questions; be prepared, and it will reflect in your grade.
Very good professor! Clear, interesting lectures and fair exams. One of the best lecturers I've had at McGill.
The best prof I have ever known in McGill. Very clear lectures, fair exam questions, she takes care of students really well! There is just no single word that can describe how great this professor is. Love her!
The best professor at mcgill by far.
She is the best!!! Always so helpful. She is always willing to answer your questions after class and making studying materials available for her students!!! Her test is fair and if you study you will be fine!
Looooooove Pavelka! She's just a genuinely sweet and cool lady. Her exams are fair, bordering on easy. Great prof all around!
Best prof
Fantastic prof. She goes over everything that will be on the exams with multiple examples and clear instruction. For every class she starts with a brief review of the last lecture with some quick practice problems, then she continues onto teach the new material very clearly. All of her notes are posted online and are VITAL to study.
Awesome teacher, everything was easy to understand. Test are somewhat hard, straight forward but you must know all those random exceptions to every rule.
One of the best profs at Mcgill, her lectures are clear and concise with lots of examples. And she uses clicker questions and annotations which keeps you awake in lecture. Her exams are really fair and if you practice drawing lewis structures and do the practice midterms they're easy.
Pavelka is an impressive professor. She took some very tough material and made it very understandable. Her midterm/section on the final saved my grade since the other two profs were much harder to follow
I loved Dr. Pavelka! She was incredibly clear and it was so sad when the other lecturer came in to teach the middle part of the semester. Pavelka is definitely there to help and saved me from getting booted from my lab section when I went with a friend to the hospital. Love her!
You can tell that Pavelka is a prof who came to McGill to teach. Don't get me wrong, she's brilliant in her field, but what makes her so special is that she is an amazing lecturer and explains things very thoroughly and in helpful and fun ways! I am beyond excited to have her down the road because she loves teaching which made me love learning.
Very, very clear. Great teacher!
She's very passionate about teaching and is very good at it. It wasn't the easiest class but it wasn't harder than the average 200 level science class. My favorite chemistry professor.
Good, clear and fair. Would recommend however I would've preferred to have been set problems rather than been expected to do them myself (which I never end up doing).
Tells you the exact type of questions to expect and obviously really loves teaching, unfortunately I found she focuses so much on the examples of calculations she skims and often ignores the theory behind it. I recommend having some idea of the theory behind what shes doing before going to the class
She gives a ton of material for you to optionally practice with, which makes you prepared for the exam and helps you learn.
GenChem at McGill is amazing and exceptionally well-organized. Most of this I attribute to Professor Pavelka, who has the best lecture notes I've ever seen. Incredibly easy to follow workbook-style notes makes her class a truly interactive learning experience. Organic chemistry has never been more straight-forward!!
One of the best profs at McGill! You can tell she genuinely cares about her students!! Very approachable and doesn't try to trick students in exam questions. Lecture material is tough but doable as long as you're prepared to put in the work.
She makes awkward jokes that are funny by how awkward they are... and somehow we always go into tangents onto "inappropriate topics" (Sn2 reaction mechanism and 5 minutes later, inexplicit and completed accidental sex jokes???) Her lectures are amazingly clear and understandable though. Show up; they're great.
Loved Pavelka, had her this summer for Org 1. She puts a lot of time into making study guides for her students, she cares about your success!!!
I would take this course again just to attend her lectures. She breaks everything down so well in her slides that you can take away the main concepts fairly easily. She's hilarious and inspiring and anyone learning from her should consider themselves lucky.
I love how she is always very energetic and lovely, and how she encourages students to email her and ask questions. She makes 8.35 am classes a bit more bearable.
Super great prof. Could not ask for better.
She is an amazing prof. Very accessible, funny and caring. I dislike organic chemistry immensely, but somehow this is still one of my favourite courses, because she is hilarious.
THE BEST PROF EVER, makes the course so interesting and is so passionate about it, I'm officially in love with organic chemistry, I'm writing this after the org-chem final(it was quite difficult) but doesn't change how amazing this course was to me.
Her lectures are very engaging and some of the jokes that she tell are hilarious. Amazing professor but her slides do not contain the important details so you would have to listen to what she says very carefully. Her passion for chemistry is very easily seen. Quite possibly one of my favorite professors at McGill.
Laura is one of the best profs McGill has ever seen. A real gem. She really cares about her students, and wants everyone to succeed. She's the only reason I would wake up to go to class.
Pavelka's lectures and slides are amazing, and so easy to take notes on. Her midterm was pretty easy as long as you kept up with the lectures. Found myself needing to read the textbook for Barrett and Frisic's topics, but was fine just going off Pavelka's slides. Also super kind and genuine, always happy to help you.
Love!! Pavelka!! She's precious and really tries to tailor her class to everyone by having clicker questions, practice questions, past midterms and office hours right after class. Explains things really clearly and makes adorably bad jokes. Great prof for chem, made me smile despite the 8:30 classes!
Absolutely loved her. Laura was an amazing prof for org, I would 100% take it again. Her lectures and notes were very thorough, and she had a lot of help set up for those who were struggling.
Very organized course. Exam questions are fair. Lectures, slides are great(so textbook isnt necessary other than to get hw pts). For review, gives previous midterms and finals (w/solutions! thats incredibly helpful) for practice. Chemcram is great. Much appreciation for her efforts to help students.
Really great professor: clear lectures, very well organized, provides tons of resources to help you succeed (past midterms/finals, ChemCram, FrezCa, etc.), clearly cares about her students. Pavelka's midterm (2nd) is very fair and straight forward. Final was a bit tricky, but not unfair.
She has really organized and easily-understood lectures. Willing to answer questions from the students and exams are fair.
Laura is an awesome teacher - she's funny, passionate about chemistry, and caring. Organic Chemistry is not easy but she's upfront with you about it - she really emphasizes doing practice (which is essential if you want to do well). She's a really cool person and awesome teacher, but make sure not to fall behind!!
I just want to say, she seems nice, always smile, like to talk to students. And, honestly, her lecture is extremely good. BUT, she is so cold. She will never help you on your grading, she won't give you an A if you got 94.4 and never give you a chance when accidents happen. I do encourage you guy to take her course, but don't make mistakes
She's super kind and caring and accessible, but she is a super average lecturer. Not that great at explaining things, just very organized. Don't be fooled by her easy midterms. She always makes the final way harder.
GREAT prof, the best I've had my first year by far. 8:30am classes were actually bearable because of her constant enthousiasm and overall great teaching. Plenty of resources to help you and a lot of practice sets available. Final exam definitely trickier than midterms but I managed an A by practicing. You won't regret taking a course with her !
Great prof, passionated about chemistry. Hard course and a lot of work required in both Org 1 and 2.
She makes everything very clear and does lots of practice problems in her lectures. She goes through content slowly enough and with so much enthusiasm that its easy to stay engaged in class. She makes me want to come to class. Great prof!
Okay, I might be biased but I love Pavelka. I did well overall in her class, but also reached out to her after I didn't do well on the first midterm, and she was SO SO SO encouraging. She truly is one of the rare McGill profs who genuinely cares about the emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing of her students.
Dr. Pavelka was by far my favorite professor of my first year. I wish I had been able to take Gen chem with her as well as Orgo. She provides every possible opportunity for help, and genuinely wants her students to do well. Her tests are not easy, but if you take advantage of all the resources given you will do fine.
Makes sure you get it and is very patient.
Does lots of practice questions and walks you through examples in class, lectures are really well structured, provides tons of review materials, makes learning the course material easy
Amazing lectures. Best prof I've had at McGill. She actually cares about teaching and it shows.
One of my favourite profs at McGill. Her explanations are very clear and her lecture set up is designed to help students succeed. Seriously, she's amazing.
All time favourite prof!
Presents the material in a very clear manner so that you don't need to textbook. Great prof!
Great lectures, but take your lecture 3 times a week, her lectures are really interesting but they are heavy so 1;30 is a long time ...
Excellent prof!!
Great prof! Very engaging lectures and she elaborates her points clearly. Very much recommended.
I love Pavelka so much! Explained things super well, highlighted what was difficult and important, gave great examples and was very caring. You have to pay attention/study/practice to do well but she made the process very manageable.
Professor Pavelka is so good (esp CHEM 212) I watched her lectures from pervious years for CHEM 222 because she was not teaching it when I took CHEM 222. Do the lectures, do all the practice she provides and you will do super well.
Professor Pavelka truly cares about her students. She answered my email about questions I had and explained everything until I got the concept. She also provides a lot of practice problems that are representative of the actual exam
She's definitely my favourite prof!!!
Pavelka is great - she provides almost too many resources to revise, and her lecture recording/notes are always super clear. She provides opportunities to boost your grade, and is super understanding of any personal circumstances, etc. that may come up throughout the course. Her office hours are also very helpful (and normally quite empty).
Great prof! Pay attention in class and you will get an A.
Really excellent professor. A unique, very effective teaching method. Very accessible inside and outside class. Go to the lectures, review sessions, and do the past exams that she posts.
She went brutal this year on the first midterm and the questions are time-consuming. This is the first year that she changes almost everything. She did teach with passion and clarity but that doesn't mean you don't need to practice a lot outside the class. Don't trust any bonus points EVER b/c they make exams harder. Do tons of practice! Good luck
I hated chemistry back in high school, but Dr. Pavelka sparked my passion for chemistry again. She is encouraging, passionate, and cares for her students' successes. Her teaching is clear, engaging, and characterized by articulate delivery. Her resources are the best -- she provides tons of practice material for the exams, which are very fair.
Laura's definitely a perfect prof for Org 1. That was my favourite class last semester. She gave a lot of resources: Organica Bytes, workbooks, and past exams and she's really approachable after class. It's not an easy A, but A is definitely doable if you do all the practice.
If you work for it you will get the A. Pavelka gives you so much to do throughout the course. If you do practice questions (workbook, past exams etc), pay attention, attend class and generally ask when you have questions you can easily score an A. TAs were super nice and helpful and I recommend the tutorials and put effort into the lab to boost.
She is one of the best profs at Mcgill!
Crown jewel of McGill Chem. Let's just say she had maternity leave last year, so I waited a year until she came back to take Chem222. (Which i dont regret because I heard the other profs were a miss) Her slides are absolute pieces of art, clearer than any textbook. She is a living legend. She makes org chem bearable!
Amazing prof! She is passionate about science education and is well-respected in the McGill community.
Professor Pavelka makes sure everybody can succeed in this class by providing plenty of resources: FRezCa TEAM Mentors, workbook problems, practice exams, tutorials, midterm review sessions, office hours. Take advantage of these! You can tell she cares immensely about her students success and mental health. By far one of my favorite professors.
Professor Pavelka is literally the BEST prof and i say this with chest! Her teaching is super amazing and i have never been so passionate about organic chem. Beacuse of her i loved chemitry more! A TOTAL GEM!
Dr. Pavelka was an awesome prof for CHEM212. She worked really well with the two other professors. She explains things in a clear way, and always was super positive about hard material. The weekly practice problem sessions were super helpful!!
Amazing prof! Explains even the most difficult organic chemistry concepts in a clear and concise manner. She is without a doubt the best prof I've had at McGill. She also made a great effort to connect with students even over zoom, sharing her own experience with working at home and showing empathy for the struggles of COVID-era university.
Excellent professor, takes the time to answer to questions, caring. You can tell she likes her job, she is really putting efforts to help students.
Best prof I've ever had at McGill. She loves her job and you can tell. Made organic chemistry approachable and enjoyable. Grateful for everything she does.
One of the best profs at McGill who cares so much about her students and is passionate about organic chemistry. She does her best to ensure her students succeed in the course. Lovely professor!!!!
I took organic 1 with her in Summer 2016. She was great at explaining things in class and provided us with a lot of questions and examples in class that were helpful for the exam (which was very fair). I definitely recommend her for chemistry.
Super nice lady! Very enthusiastic. However, she isn't always the most engaging lecturer. She switched to flipped classroom this year, and I don't think she put much effort into making useful lecture recordings. This made it a bit hard to learn, and I often found myself teaching myself the content. However, her exams are fair and she is really nice
I wasn't a fan of Pavelka's teaching style, and found her prerecorded lectures difficult to follow.
One of the best teachers I've had at McGill.
i did not do well in this class but this was not the prof's fault. she was really fun and explained things well. going to class was not super useful since she just went over practice problems, and there was a fair amount to do outside of class, but i did like the structure of the class
I hate this flipped teaching style, she doesn't explain in class, why am I even paying tuition, her prerecorded lectures are poorly made, I am not paying tuition to watch videos put up on youtube, not to mention that she gives the most basic of examples, she's a nice person but I wouldn't recommend her for chemistry
She is a nice person. However, I didn't enjoy flipped classroom style, especially since pre-lecture video are just recordings from previous years' lectures. I would probably enjoy the live lectures more if she teaches concepts in-detail like her pre-lec, and make her pre-lec video like Sirjoosign's with actual summarized key concepts in advance.
Fantastic prof who truly cares about her students. Fair assessments, similar to practice. Gives many resources. Only gripe is the quality of pre-recorded videos, since they sometimes do not match the downloadable notes. But she makes up for it with her clear passion, clarity, and willingness to help. An A is doable if you attend class, unlike me.
It is a heavy class. The reactions and their mechanism had to be learned by heart. I would have preferred if there were a reaction summary sheet. The midterms were both online, which was great. I was scared to fail that class, but her past midterm and finals gave me a clear idea of what to expect and to focus on. So don't give up!
Material was delivered in what appeared to be a haphazard way, and it seemed that the labs actually aid in understanding the course material - unfortunately, CHEM222 does not participate in the lab slot of its counterpart. The entire term felt very disorganized.
Nice prof great course structure
Professor Pavelka was a beam of light every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:35. She taught in a reverse classroom style. Pavelka is accesible in class and there are Ta's and TeamMentors available to help. Overall a very positive experience in a difficult class. Kow IUPAC before you arrive. Use the ample resources she provides.
very nice professor however I found myself having to teach myself most of the content... I found her lectures were very all over the place and there were certain topics she would run through really quickly despite them being very essential for understanding the content and doing well
Dr. Pavelka is a caring, good professor & person. But class structure sucks. It's flipped classroom so you have to basically teach yourself. Her slides/recorded lectures are not good. Classtime is doing problems which isn't helpful if you don't understand the material. I taught myself almost entirely through YT. Fair exams/grade distribution though
Amazing prof! Very fair grading scheme and informative lectures. She is an expert at what she teaches. The group exams were especially helpful b/c they were almost like mock exams to the finals. I took this class immediately after AP Chem so the first few weeks were tough but the TAs helped me get up to speed. Would highly recommend her!
Lovely person, very kind and open to answering questions. She gives plenty of time to review the material before exams. She can explain things very well and is very knowledgeable however lectures were boring and her slides were somewhat unhelpful (I only watched 4 lecture videos and attended only for exams and just did the workbook).
I really enjoyed her organic 2 course, the material was very well explained, not much presented to you at the time and you get LOTS of opportunities to practice the material through in class exercises and tutorials. Very clear in her expectations and always there for office hours or to answer emails.
She will go out of her way to help students fully understand material, extremly caring and great!
As a chem major, I did not like Laura for 222 at all. Her teaching had you needing to memorize a lot, rather than actually understanding the concepts & not many mechanisms were given. She's a really nice person, and I think she'd be great for teaching chemistry to non chem/biochem majors, where they don't need a deep understanding of the content.
I didnt like her way of teaching. her slides were very limited in contents meaning, stuff we were required to know were not necessarily in her slides or have she mentioned in the recordings (they were usually in textbooks or you would have to leanr online). So apart from teaching yourself quite few concepts, it was a decent class.
Dr. Pavelka is incredible! Very fair assessment, available for questions and runs very organized courses. Had her for o chem 1 and 2. Both times were great!
Pavelka is a knowledgeable prof, but the flipped classroom style may not work for everyone. Use Unstuckstudy and other resources to supplement the material. Fair exams and grading scheme, just be prepared to put in the work.
Her teaching style was challenging to understand and her slides were incredibly limited. I found it very difficult to follow along what she had said in her lectures. I would not recommend her.
Her flipped format gives a lot of room for practice which is great but her actual lectures are awful. She doesn't explain anything. The class isn't that hard just don't watch her videos alone. Supplement with MasterOrganic Chem textbook. The exams were fair, usually just one harder question on it the rest are straightforward. Lots of practice avail
Uses a flipped classroom format. Not my favourite, but at least the lecture recordings are understandable.
She's super kind and funny, and you can tell she genuinely tries her best to help as many students as possible. The course is structured very clearly and she explains the material very well.
Very good lecturer, well paced and clear. It's a flipped course though. Grading is very lenient and exams are easy.
