Arrogant, but intelligent. Understands her stuff....let me do a lot of rewrites
sonbby at times, but very friendly and helpful
She is very nice, funny, understanding and thorough. She knows her stuff and is not the least bit intimidating. She loves what she does and it makes it even better for her students
Thinks she is teaching graduate writing at Harvard instead of undergraduates at BU. Best grade to hope for is a C. Don't know how she became a writing professor at BU because I don't think she knows A and B are part of the alphabet.
Let me rewrite a paper 4 times until I got an A. Weird stories, though.
Entertaining but snobbish. Likes Cs.
Ress is one of the best professors I've had at BU. She is the funniest, craziest little lady. She has insane stories and is really intelligent. Lets you rewrite every paper for a better grade. If you do the work you can expect a decent grade.
Lots of fun to be in her class, learn alot, but she tears you apart (though never out loud, only on paper). She's a tough professor to please, but my writing totally improved as a result. She's super funny, nice, and helpful.
Very nice, funny, and intelligent lady. Lets you rewrite each assignment once. Highly recommend!
I thought she was wicked cool. haha I enjoyed the class! It was very interesting!
very very hard grader... but she lets you rewrite your paper. then again that increases your workload. she is a fun teacher. but plesae stop grading so hard!
She's entertaining. A tough grader, but if you change your writing and discover what things she likes, you can get good grades. Very caring and personable.
I honestly find going to class each day a waste of my time. She basically reads the novellas to you! She's a tough grader, but she does let you re-write every paper and the higher grade prevails. Very funny lady.
She is one of my favorite teachers. She is very helpful and I don't mind going to the class. I love how she lets us rewrite papers to up our grades, it really helps!
Dr. Ress is a very nice woman who always tells interesting stories. Don't expect to do any grammar, the lectures are mostly her reading excerpts from the works and telling the story of the rest. She makes it very easy to not read the books.
I love Dr. Ress! This is my 2nd class with her. She is funny and makes class very interesting and certainly worth going to. Excellent professor.
entertaining woman, but she loves to hear herself talk. classtime is easy but annoying, tough paper-grader, she's the type who grades well if you write HER ideas and opinions about the books. allows rewrites. didn't feel i improved my writing.
Not that hard of a grader. DEFINITELY plays favorites: getting picked to read was like being picked for dodgeball. Don't have to read because everything she wants in papers we read in class. Overall, a fun class and it's taught well.
She's a great teacher, who is funny and makes English interesting
She also teaches at Yale and her grading certainly reflects that. Don't take this class if your GPA needs a boost. That said, her class was my lowest grade and still my favorite by far. Other than grading, I can't say enough good things about her or recommend her enough. Awesome!
I hated writing and everything to do with writing before taking this class. She is witty and intelligent and she really does a good job at helping you if you need it. I recommend her class
Dr. Ress is an interesting and animated professor. Though she's a tough grader, and it takes forever to get revisions back, overall I think I benefited from her class.
She's the most pompous prof i've ever had. Insists on being called "DR.". Hard grader and definitely plays favorites. She's really not that funny.
Likes listening to herself, but that makes reading a non-factor. Hard grader. Revisions barely helped, and corrections made sometimes were questioned in the revisions. Don't take if you need a good grade.
one of the best professors i have ever had, not that hard of a grader, very witty, funny, and interesting. Really appreciates hard work and gives you freedom in her assignments. I absolutely recommend ant class with her.
She was a great teacher! She's funny, witty, and so cute--only around 4'11. Anyway, she's very intresting, but she is a difficult grader. She really makes you write your best, and if you don't, well, she gives you what you deserve. Also, there's always revision. I learned how to write well.
Listen, take this class if you like writing someone else's paper. She basically says "write this" and if you don't you get a C. I am completely re-writing my final, due in 2 days, paper right now becuase it's not her exact words. She is making me hate writing. I liked her so much at first. oh well.
This professor was more interested in having her own ideas written. As others have commented, she loves to hear herself speak. If you are creative and want to improve your writing skills, I advise not taking this class.
Although she is rather witty and spunky, she is the most difficult and frustrating grader ever. Definitely don't take her class if you are looking to raise your GPA. She offers revisions, but often times doesn't even change the grade after you spend time molding the paper to her perfection. She is impossible to please; your GPA will suffer.
she is my only C this semester. She is brilliantly intelligent- but a bad teacher. She doesn't help you, she only tells great stories. This class will kill your GPA. I am warning you- only take this class if you are really confident in your wiriting. I have always been a B+ writer, and she has made me hate the subject all together. thanks,Dr.
Very knowledgable and explains the text very thoroughly so she makes it easy not to do the reading. TOUGH grader and basically tells you exactly what to write. if you like to express your own opinions in your papers, this class is not for you. as a person, very approachable and funny, makes going to class enjoyable.
Very good class. She knows everything! Don't take this class if you need an A. I worked my ass off for a B+, but if you want an intelligent class it is worth it.
really wrapped up in herself: her novel her fav. authors her oxford degree her fake half-accent. she's a bad teacher and hard to please. revisions do nothing. she picks apart the books we read and makes mountains out of 2 words in a sentence and finds humor in the most boring things: all in all an egotist who'll kill your grade.
Nothing pleases *Dr.* Ress. Her fake accent and laughing at her own jokes gets in the way her actually teaching students anything. The grading is a whole other story, basically you have no chance of getting about a B- unless you're one of her two favorites.
I love Dr. Ress! She's very nice, and very helpful if you just ask. Material was sometimes tedious, but relevant and interesting. Your writing will improve if you take her class. A wonderful, intelligent lady!
Unreasonable grader, inconsistent, and though she's friendly enough, has a tendency to be unbearably pretentious. Better than some alternatives, I suppose, but EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS FIRST!
Dr. Ress is awesome! Despite what other people here have said, I think Ress is a fair grader, fun teacher and very interesting. She admits that the class is rigid and based on BU requirments. She has a great sense of humor and likes getting to know her students. She's easily approachable and very understanding.
Dr. Ress, and be sure to call her Dr., is one of the most pretentious people I've ever met and her fake accent is annoying. She's smart but she grades way too hard and revisions rarely improve your grade. She's willing to help you but basically all she wants is for you to write her ideas. Avoid her class if possible.
Dr. Ress's class is the best writing class in BU! Do whatever it takes but get into this class for WR 150, Dr. Ress explains concepts clearly, a little hard on grading but her class is so much fun. Hilarious
I really enjoyed Dr. Ress' WR 100 class. Don't listen to what anybody says--she's not pretentious, that's her real accent. She is incredibly funny, and I look forward to every class with her. She's also very helpful when it comes to papers and grammatical questions. Basically, she's awesome.
I LOVE HER... She is sooo awesome and she lets you re-do essays to get a better grade. She is funny and entertaining and really knows her stuff.
Dr. Ress is awesome. Take her class. Seriously. Those who think she's an unfair grader probably ignore her comments. If you heed her notes in the margins of your papers, you'll get an A or an A-. Plus, she's hilarious and a great dresser. Don't pass her class up.
interesting person but a terrible grader. she definitely has favorites who will get high grades, & the majority will get Cs no matter what. shes hilarious & makes the class fun but avoid this class if u care for ur gpa. her grading policies will make u commit suicide. also makes u pay $10 for photocopies when she couldve posted them online instead
I am really mixed about this class. I am a good writer, and have an A in macroeconomics, math 120, and SM 121, yet a C+ in this class. Something is wrong here. I went to the writing center with every essay and revision, but always ended up with C's. It is really a shame, because she's a very intelligent lady but she rapes GPA's.
I love her. She's sweet, funny, and from very near my hometown. She's a tough grader but she lets you rewrite papers. She has high expectations of everyone. She goes through most of the reading in class to make sure you understand and it makes picking out paper topics easy. She's funny and keeps a class I formerly hated very interesting.
I LOVE HER I LOVE HER I LOVE HER! Her comedy class is possibly the class I look forward to the most each week. She's not an overly easy grader, but it's managible. Expect somewhere around an A-.
I cannot stress enough how wrong the review below this is. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. As a person, Dr. Ress is a charismatic, well-educated woman; however, for a WR150 class, she is a very harsh grader. Though I have always excelled in writing, I AM open to criticism. Her comments, however, are not constructive. If you're a good writer, expect a B.
I agree with the previous post that I too cannot stress how wrong these previous posts are! Do NOT take WR150 with Dr. Ress. Even though class can be interesting at time, she is an unfair and unreasonable grader. Stay away from this class!!!!!
The class itself is amazing-I could sit there for 3 hours instead of 1.5-but her grading will destroy your GPA. I had an A in WR100, but I'm struggling to hold a B+ here. You don't have much choice for essays, except for topics already discussed in class. Do NOT take this class if you have to keep a specific GPA; it will stress you out too much.
She is a very nice, interesting professor, however all you do in class is read the plays. That's about it. She has a very specific idea about what she wants from an essay, and if you don't follow it to the letter, you won't get above a B, and she never explains why. This class was OK, but I'd recommend taking something else.
She is an incredibly nice teacher and extremely entertaining. However, she never stops correcting a paper and an A is hard to find.
While i think Dr. Ress is a very interesting, cultured, and funny lady, she is quite a hard grader. In her defense, however, she lets you revise every paper for a better grade and goes over the reading with you literally page by page. She writes lots of comments, which shows that she actually READS the papers (unlike other professors). Cute lady.
not motivated, indifferent
Easy to get by with a C or C+, hard to get a B. She is a very intelligent PHD even by BU standards.
Great teacher.Criticism on essays is a little overwhelming, but constructive. Very hard grader. She's smart, she knows it, and she wants you to know it.
I took this class last year, and I find that I reference something I learned with Dr. Ress at least once a week. She may be a difficult grader, but the class itself is great. Prepare to learn a lot of interesting things about comedy! You'll sound a lot smarter in the rest of your classes and your writing will get drastically better!
The class is very difficult but the topics she covered are interesting. For some unknown reason we didn't start reading the plays till halfway through the semester and had to rush to get through everything. If she likes you, guaranteed A. She also tends to short people.
very arrogant. hard to get good grades, even if she likes you. she gives revisions, but rarely will go half a letter grade higher. if she doesn't like you, your life sucks. don't take her class. it makes comedy hell.
extremely tough grader, But she actually cares about her students. If you want an A you probably wont get it, but if you want to be a better writer definitely take her. She wrote me an amazing recommendation even though I only got a B in her class.
She's a great person and extremely helpful. I just wasn't interested in the readings and found the class to be boring at most times. She grade's pretty harshly but gives constrictive crticism.
She is the worst teacher ever. Yes she is an extremely smart and kind person, but no matter how good of an essay you write, you will end up with a C+. Modern Novella is the one class to avoid for your WR100 requirement.
She's a really harsh and unfair grader. Mostly everyone will receive Cs in the class even if you work hard.
If you are in college to learn how to think deeply, to write clearly, and to express yourself powerfully, then sign up for Professor Ress' class. I have not known a professor that gave more thorough feedback to her students. Expect a challenge, but Professor Ress is fair and the class is worth it. That's why I had her for two semesters!
The comedy class was alright but she is an incredibly difficult grader. She also spent a lot of time complaining about how she isn't really a professor and trash talks BU. She has definite favorites and if you are on her good side she'll like you. Otherwise, good luck.
Comedy and the Comic impulse. I didn't realize it was comedy in the old sense (plays that don't end gruesomely). If you are looking for an easy class, find another one. If you want to take an interesting class with a wonderful professor who cares about her students and improve exponentially as a writer, take this one. Tough love pretty much.
Prof. Ress talks in a fake accent, has obvious favorites, is the toughest grader, and is overall annoying. All we do in class is read the plays so I don't even bother doing any homework. I don't think I've ever worked this hard in any class so far, and I'm getting the worst grades. It's not the plays, but rather her teaching that's the issue.
After taking this class, I still have nightmares about her. She broke me down and offered little help, ending up with a C+. Snooty, unhelpful and mean I wish I had never taken her class because she hurt me. Fake, mean and will not help your writing.
May very well be the worst professor at BU. She claims that she's there to help your writing, but her feedback is unclear and misleading. Even given the opportunity to rewrite and correct your mistakes, your grade won't improve. She also has an undeserved air of accomplishment about herself, speaks in a fake accent and makes the class miserable.
She is an excellent professor.
If you are interesting in existentialism, Modern Novella is the class for you. Read great novellas (Tolstoy, Camus, Joyce). Dr Ress does not hand out easy A's but if you work hard, you will improve as a writer and your grade will reflect that. Office hours are very helpful and you can tell she really cares about her students & gets to know them.
THE WORST WR PROFESSOR EVER! I could not get better than a C+, funny how I got an A- in WR150. I rewrote an ENTIRE paper with her comments and i went from a C+ to a C+. So much for giving you points for effort. This woman literally made me cry over my papers when I recieved the grade.
Comedy & the Comic Impulse was a very, very difficult class. She's a hard grader, but she's understanding and helpful. I met with her outside of class a few times, and I think that helped. My grades improved a little when I followed her corrections exactly. I got an A-, but I worked hard to get it.
She doesn't comment at the end of the essays and she is very impatient when she reads. Do not use foreshadowing in your essays. Talk about everything as you mention them or she will tear you apart for it. Also, her handwriting makes it even more difficult cause its so hard to read. This class is very difficult and requires a lot of work.
This was a very fun and interesting class, but I had to work very hard for a measly B. With the exception of this class, I am normally an A/-A student. Be forewarned that prompts are convoluted, and that endless rewrites may improve your writing, but not your grade. As long as you're savvy to this, take it for what it's worth.
If you want an A, you're not going to get it. Even if you're an A student, it's nearly impossible to get an A on her papers the first time around. She allows for "revisions," but you will only go from say, a B to a B+. She does have an air of superiority about her. She has favorites and is rather narrow-minded when it comes to grading.
She is a very good teacher and I enjoyed taking the class. I learned a lot from her. She is super nice and definitely knows what she is talking about. However, she is a very tough grader and it is nearly impossible to get an A. Definitely not an easy class overall.
Dr. Ress is super nice and truly wants students to improve their writing skills. She is a tough grader, so if you want an easy A then this isn't the class for you.If you put effort into the revisions then you will earn the good grades you deserve.
Incredibly hard. First time I've ever gotten a C, I wouldn't recommend for WR 150. She's funny and energetic though.
Don't take this class if you are not an English major. Though Ress is a nice person and will help you out when you need it, you need to give her exactly what she wants to get a remotely decent grade (if you can figure out what it is - she's unusually ambiguous). If she likes you your grade will reflect that. She is very picky so watch out. If you don't give 100% to this class she will make you suffer for it (sometimes even if you do).
Laura Ress is a great professor. Class was fun to go to and lectures were funny and interesting. HOWEVER, this class is extremely hard. I got a B and probably spent 100 hours working on papers. She gives horrible grades, so unless you're an english major, do not take this class.
I had Dr. Ress back in 2006. I was thinking about my college grades, and realized she gave me my first/worst, a C+. I remember getting an A on the first paper, which was also the only paper I received feedback on. She waited until the last day of class to give us back the remainder. Kind of a shocker when I thought I was doing great. Be warned.
Terrible professor. The only grades are for the essays, but the only thing she ever talks about in class is the reading, not writing at all. She has an extreme feeling of superiority to her. She has favorites. You will not get an A unless you are an English major. Do NOT take Ress, you will not have a rewarding experience. Terrible professor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The prompts are incredibly long and she gives little clarity to them. The books you read are difficult and she is not great in explaining the meanings according to the prompts given. She is good at reviewing writing fundamentals. She has SERIOUS favorites, girls. She think she is a mastermind and completely fakes an accent.
Professor Ress made lectures fun and interesting. She's got a sense of humor, but you laugh at her as much as with her (which she loves). She's a little bit of a tough grader, but if you visit her before turning in a paper, she'll give good feedback on how to improve.
Hardest grader at BU. Got an A in WR100, got a B- in this class. Reading are complicated, and even with her marginalia on drafts, its difficult to revise. Do not take if you want above an B.
Seems to care for her students, but obvious that she will give her favorites the As (even when they're bad writers). Tried so hard, even sacrificing other grades so I could fix my essays according to her feedbacks, yet only inprove by half a grade. She's not clear in what she wants. Comments here are quite accurate: take for topic not for grades.
Be careful when you take her. Ress does a good job explaining things but can be quite stubborn when grading. For example, if she brings up some point she picked up on the book, she'd want you to incorporate it some how if your essay was based on said book. Very nit-picky. Also, the prompts on her essays can be confusing.
She's a really passionate lady, incredibly intelligent, and quite nice. But she's a bit of a Francophile, and is absolutely brutal when it comes to your papers. Even if you had your essays written and edited by Hemingway himself, I guarantee you wouldn't get more than a B. Her prompts are not clear and convoluted, and revisions rarely work out.
Dr. Ress is passionate about what she does. People find her overbearing, but in reality she just cares for her students. It is true that the essay topics are quite vague and require extra effort to carry out. While the work is challenging, if you give her a chance she can really be inspirational and teach you a lot about life. Tells fun stories too
This class is definitely difficult. Not an easy A at all. This requires your full effort. Topic was interesting, but not worth the workload. Tough grader
You have to work A LOT. But if you like to learn, she's inspirational. If you want an easy A, not for you. She's a tough grader but gives the opportunity of resubmitting essays. But I'd rather get a B+ and be amazed by her.
This class is very difficult. She would provide a lot of background info and quotes for the papers that you write, but she mostly is vague on the expectations that she wants from you. Also, she would want you to write in her way and take her position. Even if you fulfill every one of her requirements, she still would only give you a B.
The class on the Modern Novella gets really vague and philosophical and I got the feeling that even though she clearly cares about what she's teaching, she can't exactly make it accessible or interesting for freshmen.
You will have to work, and she is a tough grader. However, if you pay attention in class you can really learn a lot. She has a lot of valuable insight.
