Laura is an amazing teacher. Her lecture class is great. She knows exactly what she is talking about. Laura makes every effort to allow every student in the class to do well. She is a really interesting and fun teacher and the classwork is not hard. There is not homework and the tests are easy!
Good teacher overall. Encourages participation and individual thought.
Laura is very fun and an exciting teacher. She really cares about her students and encourages them to interact in class.
Lectures often times got boring. She also seemed more interested in her own personal projects more than what she was teaching.
Her classes were very boring and attendance was a part of the grade so you have to go. She singles you out in class and can make you feel stupid. But she was always encouraging us to come to office hours to get help for exams.
She's a very nice woman and always there to help, but her lectures left you confused with what you actually needed to know.
Terrible teacher for 101. I don't know of anyone in my class that liked her.
Lectures were interesting for the most part, and the two grad students she had helping her were very helpful. An enjoyable class overall, and not too difficult.
Nice lady but her two TAs were airheads, honestly. The class was boring and pointless and unless you need it for your major, I would advise against this class. Attendance is pretty much required since everything is lecture and book. Bottom line, don't take this class if you don't have to. She grades hard and expects way too much.
Laura is a very good professor. All you have to do is show up in class and print off the lecture notes. She's always willing to talk and gives out extra credit from the readings.
Very nice lady. Unclear a lot of times during lectures which are very boring. Some things to look forward to are a constantly revised syllabus, essay's on tests, papers, and a big chunk of the final based on videos. I wouldn't suggest her, but it was definitely not the wosrt class I have had.
very boring lectures and sometimes unclear during lectures about material. Not a walk in the park thats for sure
She is one of the most boring people to listen to when she is speaking. I dreading going to this class but if you keep up with the reading you are fine...which is an entire 500+ page textbook. I would never take her again for a SOC class.
Very boring class. She grades very hard so don't take her class unless its a major requirement.
I have no idea what these people are talking about, Dr. Sanchez is a very good professor....she's very knowledgeable, she has a good personality that comes out during her lectures...I had her for 101 and thought that it was pretty easy and I never even went (not b/c of her, just b/c I didn't go to a lot of classes when I was a freshman)..
It's a lot of work for a 3 credit class. Too many group presentations. She's not an approachable teacher and tends to come off incredibly rude. I would definitely not suggest this teacher.
It's a lot of work for a 3 credit class. Too many group presentations. She's not an approachable teacher and tends to come off incredibly rude. I would definitely not suggest this teacher.
Dr. Sanchez really knows the content but she does not know how to teach it well. She grades harshly and really expects everyone to think like she does. I would not take a class with her!
she is a very nice and energetic woman, her class is tough though and there are not many grades
this teacher is very interested in sociology but has no idea how to teach it. You get outlines with so much information it's hard to retain it all and when it comes time for the test she tends to stray from the study guides. If she could convey the material better i think many more students would like socioly and do well in her class
In the beginning I was very excited. She seemed nice and interesting. She turned into being very rude and a very hard class. Tests were pretty hard. The class isn't that bad you just go over notes and I didn't mind it besides it never helped me remember stuff because you are learning so much you cant remember it all. thats impossible.
laura was awesome in the beginning. but then time went by.. for soc 101 she has all her powerpoints online so you dont need to take notes in class which is good, but her tests are CRAZY. she gives in class extra credit once in a while to favor those students who show up to her lecture. overall i dont reccomend her and if you have her- good luck.
I strongly discourage anyone from taking a soc class with dr. sanchez. she is a sorry excuse for a teacher and does not know how to teach the material. Her tests are impossible and do not follow any aspect of the exam guide. She is rude and narrow minded and my deepest sympathy goes out to any student who has to take a class with Sachez.
The material is O.K. but I think the way she teaches it can be a little unclear the test can be pretty difficult but mostly it was just boring, though I didn't think she was a terrible prof
Sanchez is a wonderful professor. She deeply cares about the material and actually knows what she is talking about because she is experienced in the field. I have never met anyone so passionate. Her class is challenging and not easy by any means, but it's a 300 level class. You need to read and study the notes. 2 tests, 7 h-works, 1 group project.
Although she is clearly a liberal feminist, she is always open to hearing others' differences in opinions. She likes people who are willing to participate. GO TO CLASS! I think she was very knowledgeable about the family and marriage class. It's a good class, but it's very hard work!
I thought Dr. Sanchez's lectures weren't too bad. She helps out the people who show up to class by giving them exam questions and bonus questions. She sends out a lot of emails warning of important classes to attend and the assignments are easy. Just read the lecture outlines and come to class and its an easy B+ or A. Take the class if possible
Her lectures are long. Study the stats that she gives you. She doesn't like to help unless you pretty much demand it. She can kind of be a____ fill in the blank. I went to her office hours and she made me feel like a complete idiot. Oh and she's obessed with horses.
At first Proff Sanchez came off as a happy-go-lucky teacher with an extreme interest in teaching. But as the semester wore down she became increasingly ill tempered. The powerpoints she depended on were dull. And if you went to her for help she would often shoot you down and acted as if you were a waste of her valuable time.
HORRIBLE Professor. When I say Bad I mean BAD. Everything I ever needed help with was just a waste of her valuable professional time. Oh, and if your parents don't have a PhD like she does, than they are below her, as are you. She was such a snotty little woman, and I can't believe I subjected to myself to 16 weeks of her.
Dr.Sanchez is a mediocre professor. She is not good at helping, when you ask questions she makes you feel stupid and talks down upon you. She also is very self centered and speaks of herself highly and is very rude. I do not recommend her at all.
I don't want to be as rough as everyone else. But. She has a well organized lecture ready everyday and is straightforward with what she is teaching and what is to be tested. But she is a little too high up on her horse, pun intended (she loves horses). She will make almost anyone feel stupid when they try to ask a question.
Could not stand this class. She drains any interest I ever had in sociology out of me. She always seems annoyed when you talk to her outside of class. I find her to be extremely rude and she is a huge meenie. She treats her TA like crap and he doesn't deserve that. This class is way too difficult for a 1010 level course. Absolutely learned nothing.
She is not a very good professor, she is very biassed and typically very liberal close minded. If you do not think as she does then you are below her and she has no problem showing that. Her teaching was a little less then mediocre. I do not suggest you take her.
she is a mean person! I went and talked to her numerous times at her office hours, and she is not very helpful. She makes you feel stupid when you ask her a question. Just dont take Soc. with Sanchez! You will regret it, and your GPA will go down!
Took this class my freshman year and really enjoyed it. Go to class! She gives you answers for questions that are going to be on the test. She wants you to do well. She LOVES sociology so that helps a lot. Read the book, the tests can be difficult.
She's really enthusiastic, and even though you don't HAVE to go to class because class size is so large, she gives answers to tests all the time. The tests are really easy if you study.
The Worst. Lets just say that sleeping in an extra hour or two weighed heavily on my decision whether to go to class or not each day.
This class is SO boring, you'll have to force yourself to go. You never use the textbook. Just take your laptop to class and copy the notes, and don't listen to what she says until the end when she wants to give the 'hardcore' students who attend class bonus questions on the midterm. Also just read the practice assignments, they're super easy.
She serves you a terms and definitions sunday with hot terms and definitions, and a few terms and definitions sprinkled on top. That's ALL the class is. You don't discuss current events or anything remotely interesting. You don't use the textbook, don't take this class. Take Donna Kauffman if you want an interesting class
Dry lectures but attendance is not required. She gives lecture outlines on blackboard that go over everything in class. Tests were easy if you prepared by reading lecture outlines. There were only 3 exams and 2 in-class quizzes. Don't have to buy the book either if you take her class. It's useless. Class was easy overall!
Her class was really easy, and she gives many extra credit opportunities. However, her outlines are so cut and dry, that class isn't required. She attempts to tie in real-world examples. She can be really hyper and sometimes obnoxious. She e-mails a lot as well. I would reccommend this class though, it's an easy A.
She teaches well, there is just a lot to study. Go to class because she gives answers to test questions. She loves her Soc!
SHe was awesome, go to class, she gives test questions. If you go to class you will get an A on the exams. She provides notes in the beginning. She also gives a study guide for the exams
She is very talkative and talks a lot about her horses and life. She can be very rude at times. She gives answers to tests which is good but I do not recommend her.
Very boring, dry lectures. She talks alot about her horses, herself, her life, and all that. The book is useless! I never had to use it. I would not suggest buying it at all!
I don't know why everyone is so hard on Dr. Sanchez! I had several friends in her Soc 101 class & we all agreed that she was pretty easy. If you go to class & study the notes it's so easy. It's a really boring class & hard to stay awake, but so easy. I would recommend to get the credits. She's not nearly as bad as people say she is. Nice person :)
Dr. Sanchez is a good professor. Her lectures are really hard to stay awake for, but they are really easy. To me, her tests were easy because I went to class & studied. Got an A no problem. People are super hard on her but it's not true. She may be boring but I actually learned in her class. I would recommend!
Very easy. Gives lots of extra credit. She gives reviews and her TAs have review sessions that are very helpful. Overall very easy class
She is an excellent teacher, but she's one of those professors who make you feel like an idiot. If you're willing to put up with that, take her class. It's beneficial. Otherwise, avoid her at all costs.
She might occasionally speak to you like you're five, but her class is super easy. For real. But the secret to acing her class is ATTENDING it. Also for real. She gives test questions when not a lot of people show up. Overall, she may not be the most interesting, but she teaches at a good pace.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. She was not willing to work with students in order to succeed in the class and was very rude during office hours. All she talked about were her horses and she was extremely liberal and does not care what anyone has to say about it. Textbook was not useful either. I don't suggest her AT ALL.
First couple weeks of classes I thought she was a great professor until I realized how self centered she is. Basically, her opinion is the only thing that matters and if you don't agree with her, she makes you feel dumb. She acts like you can come for help whenever but when you do she constantly puts you down.
Laura Sanchez is a good professor altogether. Going to class is key for her because she will tell you exact exam questions if a lot of people don't show up. Going to class, paying attention, and reading the sections in the book over what's on the study guide will get you an A as long as you do the assignments too.
Don't take her class. Some professors have a knack for being helpful and accommodating toward students. She does not, she's rude and does not know how to interact with students in a positive way.
I love Laura! I actually like her lectures, they aren't totally boring and she tries to make it interesting. I would definitely love to have her again.
She is an amazing professor and it's easy to tell that she really cares about her students. She does make you work for your grade, but at the end of the semester it feels so worth it.
Worst class I have ever taken literally she gives you notes and a book and the test is not even close to either of them!
Great professor. Assignments are not difficult. Tests are somewhat challenging, but not impossible. Put in the time and effort and you'll get a good grade.
She's quite poor at working with students on an individual level. If you pay attention and study you should be okay. Form study groups before the exams - a lot of the stuff can easily trip you up.
It's clear that her pedagogical philosophy has not had a lot of time devoted to its development. If research methods as a whole were equatable to a gorgeous woman, Sanchez's class would have been an examination in hair follicles... Wait for someone else to teach it, if you can. Talk to your advisor to see if that's likely.
I have mixed feelings about her class. Her lectures are long but she tries to put videos and things to break it up. She uses PowerPoint but goes through them quickly.
I had Dr. Sanchez for a few semesters ago and she is amazing! She really inspired me. If you show her the respect she deserves then she will give it back to you. She is spunky, and when I went to her office hours she helped me a lot. I would definitely take classes from her again.
It's now been over a year since I had her for this course, but this review has been a longtime coming. Dr. Sanchez will frustrate you to all end, bit damn is it worth it. She gets you to truly understand the material. I hope to stick with sociology into graduate school and could not have asked for a more rigorous experience. Saved my semester, too.
Dr. Sanchez does not give great feedback or offer much personal help. Lectures are long and if you don't pay attention you are out of luck. Make you rely more on the TA instead of her.
Absolutely hate this class. Her lectures were too long, and exams were harder than it should have been. Decent teacher, but she gave too much work. If you are taking 18 credits make sure you don't take this class.
Her class really was not that difficult, she is willing to work with you in order to make sure that you are able to get things done and she does offer extra credit. Hardly tried!
The semester started off pretty well besides the fact that she grilled a student who had just transferred into the course on the second day of the class. She had a somewhat long list of what was expected of the students. Definitely print out her powerpoints and follow along. Asking questions is necessary. She was a bit snappy at some periods.
She was very passive aggressive with me and other students, or sometimes straight up aggressive. It made it tough to ask questions because I was always too scared she would grill me. She picks on students if nobody answers, and makes you feel stupid if you get it wrong. Worst professor I've ever had in my whole life of schooling. MUST AVOID.
Dont listen to the SOC1010 comments. It's an intro lvl so of course shes easy. Laura was by far one of my worst experiences at BGSU. She's very demeaning. She will speak to you like a child but expect you to want to participate. The workload is very heavy. Yelled at our class because her evaluations were very negative. She knows the material tho.
Nice professor and cares about you passing. Lots of videos and readings weekly but if you don't read them you wont fail, she tell you which one you'll have a quiz on. Lots of extra credit opportunities and lectures can be long but some topics are interesting.
Laura has an interesting personality and can be a bit biased, but she genuinely wants you to be successful and cares about her students. Although you do not get credit for attendance, it is important you go to her lectures as she does not post her notes online. Her assignments are overall pretty easy but the two tests were pretty difficult for me.
This capstone class was very difficult and there were only 10 assignments to be graded on. Most assignments were only 5-10 points each so you have to have perfect assignments. Professor is passive aggressive and borderline rude with feedback.
Professor Sanchez is probably one of thee kindest professors I've ever had. She was very patient (I took her class online during COVID in the summer) and allowed students to redo poor assignments. Very attentive. She had all of her lectures on Youtube for us to rewatch. You honestly do not have to buy any books for this class. Pretty easy A.
Has optional lectures but moved class online after two weeks in which we have to read and watch videos on our own. Does not provide study guide and not sure what we are even supposed to have learned/ material is not clear.
Only has a few assignments that are on a discussion board and always gives the same grades. Only has two exams which is fine but she schedules them at HER convenience meaning its during your other class times...
Very understanding about COVID/if you're unable to make it to class, makes material available offline if you can't make it to class, a bit of a tough grader but gives good feedback
Professor Sanchez knows what shes talking about, but she is VERY passive aggressive. This class is pretty easy to go through if you listen to the lectures and stay up on readings/videos (I took it online), but some of her essay questions are downright difficult to answer unless you have the course material in front of you. Picky. Youll survive.
Professor Sanchez is okay. She is very passive aggressive and a tough grader. When I took SOC1010 she gave an online option through readings and videos in Canvas, but would not Zoom the class. She only has two exams which can be tedious, and the extended response must be very clear and detailed.
(Took this course fall 2021) Very passive aggressive. Repeatedly deadnamed and misgendered a trans author she talked about. A friend and I had a zoom meeting w/ her about it and she pretended not to hear me at all but could hear my friend just fine. My friend and I were in the same room using the same device.
it's fun at times, but gets boring quickly (based on my opinion and experience )
Lots of assigned readings and videos outside of class. She likes to assign articles from the New York Times, so you'll have to pay for a subscription which is annoying. Doesn't really accept late work, so if you don't do one assignment it'll be hard to get anything above a B.
I think Laura is very knowledgeable when it comes to sociology but the assignments were useless. Lots of discussion boards and the papers were not that fun to write. However, content is easy to interpret and she is a fair grader as long as you turn things in on time. Tests are easy if you read the articles and listen to podcasts. beware of essays
She made me nervous sometimes because she is not afraid to call you out if you are doing something wrong or pick on you even when you do not know the answer. She is honestly a genius and a decently sweet person but you have to walk on eggshells with her. Do not approach her at the beginning of class unless you want to make her frustrated.
Absolutely hated this class and personally think it was the most useless I have ever taken. All she wants to talk about is her horses. She may know what she is talking about but dose not know how to teach it in a way that makes you want to learn it or even learn it. She never gives feedback on assignments unless you go to her office hours.
This professor is clearly pushing a personal agenda in favor of her own political and social opinions. It's a left leaning indoctrination class focused on Marxism and the LGBTQPIA agenda. 20% of your grade is based on studying the book "Gender Queer." Matthew Valasik and Shannon Reid Classifying Far Right Groups as Gangs is another assignment.
She is passionate about her ways and often material is thrown at your face and then moved on to the next.
Confused as to why theres such a bad rating? I had a great time in Sanchez's class. Besides her being a tough grader, she clearly understands the subject and respects her students. If you cannot listen to a lecture about LGBTQ+ issues, BIPOC issues, or Marxist ideas then you should not be taking a sociology course. Soc is about diff points of view.
