You gotta love that milkshake walk. She should be in Ivory soap commercials. . . . Is it hot in here?
What can't I say about Dr. Schechter? It's unbelievable that somebody so-well informed about literature could also be both a professional unicyclist and an award-winning fly-fisher. Power to ya', Dr. S!!!

So great! Laura's super nice and easy going. I don't like poetry at all, but watching her get all worked up when she teaches it... it's really cute.
The best evah! You'll have to work hard if you want good grades, but you'll learn a ton. You can totally go to her too if you're having problems--she'll spend lots of time going over essays with you and stuff.... And she always wears cute clothes!
Best english teacher I have ever had. She makes everything so interesting!
Laura is awesome. Try in her class (and participate in discussions), and it's easy to get decent grades.
I like poetry now and I'm a dude.
I don't know what these people are talking about. She is terrible. Only choose her if you want to completely lose faith in the English language. By the end of the class, you'll probably switch to Spanish or French.
Don't listen to the last one. I'm a guy and I got A-/A grades all year. Laura's great.
To the dolt a few down calling her a feminist, DUH! THE clue was on the first day, she told us her ph.d paper was on the antagonization of amazonian women in Victorian literature! Laura is a good professor and she'll get you through your first year smoothly. HISTORICAL perspective,so expect older literature. She is very helpful if you ask for help.
Very mixed feelings about her. First off; the material she chooses is almost exclusively feminist themed. If you don't care about that stuff, her class will be very painful. That said; she does know her stuff. She seems nice but kind of phony at the same time. Also, she is good-looking, but I'm not sure how relevant that is.
Her lectures are well organized and usually interesting - going to class is a must. She is also crystal clear about her expectations for assignments and marks fairly & consistently. A good prof all in all!
Get's into content she's teaching about. Very cheery and happy to be talking about the texts being analyzed. Provides great feedback. Participation counts as part of your mark in her class. Super organized, follows the syllabus day by day. Her choices of texts were pretty good, they were all enjoyable reads. Learns everyone's names after 2 weeks.
She is well organized and her material is pretty interesting although it was not all historical. Her comments on papers are helpful and overall, a good prof.
Awesome prof, totally engaging and clearly interested in what she's teaching. Very helpful and goes out of her way to help you out. Provides ppt notes but should take notes in class too. No midterm, had a simple in-class writing assignment to replace it, as well as other participation writing. Should contribute to class discussion. Take her class!
Very nice. She has interesting lectures and I loved the material she picked, weird but also interesting. Not a very hard marker but you still need effort. She takes attendance and does a participation mark thats not entirely easy to get an A in so you'll have to attend class a lot and participate in discussions often.
Did not see eye to eye with this prof. Personally, I would just avoid english classes as a whole. Interestingly enough, my marks got better after I stopped showing up to lectures.
She was an awesome prof. I really liked the books we studied, they were very intriguing. Her emails were helpful, I would really recommend her!
Young and eager! You can tell Laura was excited to teach this class! Everything was straight forward, she was super helpful in person and via. email. Gave marks where students earned them, and when they didn't, she was honest! I would certainly take a class with her again!
Her essay consists of us finding our own source or article and writing on how it relates to the class theme. The assignment was very general and basically just told us to find an article and write 1000 words. I dont like this at all.... maybe shes lazy to come up with legitimate essay topics like how all the other english profs do.
She grades hard and her grading procedure is unclear. She seems to always be trying to prove that she is educated...we know you have a PhD, thanks. I don't recommend her for first year english.
She is the best prof ever ! Class was not mandatory, her essay assignments were super easy, just make sure you get someone to proof read over your work and its a EASY A. hand down the easiest english class I ever took.
Laura is an awesome prof. She is super cute and funny and very approachable. She is always responds to emails and marks assignments within a week. She is a decent marker, some of her comments are questionable but she's still fair. Her lessons are somewhat boring (class discussion turns into teachers pet quickly). Take her class, you wont regret it!
She's very knowledgeable in her area and tries to make Shakespeare and Elizabethan culture really relevant and fun. She's a new prof so she's still trying out different assignment formats and some of them don't quite work, but I think she'll get better and better with experience. GREAT prof to take for Shakespeare, would definitely recommend.
She's adorable and I like the class discussion, though assignments and expectations can be unclear. I think she'll be an awesome prof one day.
Awesome prof. Definitely makes learning about historical texts a lot more enjoyable. Very passionate about it so she can go on for a bit, but the lectures on texts really help clear up any uncertainties about the texts. Highly recommend!!
Her assignments are unclear. She does not appreciate students'effort in writing essay and she always gives the lowest mark she can.
I found that she definitely played favourites a lot in this class. Her tone was incredibly condescending, and her marking was a bit low. However, she was very organized and picked awesome materiel to study.
Her assignments are brutal just for the reason that she nitpicks everything. She forgets that this was a year one English course and not a graduate course. But at the same time she was very passionate about the course which made it a little more bearable.
Laura's a great prof, but not as good as her brother!
Laura is awesome. Assignments are super easy, which may be bad because we are not being challenged enough. Class isn't mandatory unless you want notes and participation points. Is super nice and doesn't pick on people and accepts any ideas. Has group discussions. Explains things well. Overall a great prof and made engl a gpa booster (go figure)
Laura is extremely friendly and helpful. She respects everyone who contributes to class discussion, and likes group work and mini presentations of group work to the class. We barely read anything all semester, probably like 5 texts. For the final essay we got to create our own topic. She's a fairly easy marker and gives LOTS OF feedback
One of the best professors I've had! Dr. Schechter is friendly, approachable, and very excellent when it comes to feedback. Her insight was helpful and she puts effort into improving the skills of her students. The class overall was interesting and informative.
People who say that this class is a GPA booster are ART students who have a lot of time to write essays. For science students she is hard! because she gives you the lowest mark she can. Even when you improve the grades don't. Nice lady but HARD marking.
If you put the work in you will get an A. I'm no arts student, and I would not consider myself an amazing writer, but I was able to score many As in her class. She's super sweet and passionate about what she is teaching. Would recommend for sure!
She was ok, I wasn't overly impressed with the class. She can be condescending at times, and she marks pretty tough. If you want an easy A, don't take her class. It's not the GPA booster I was hoping for, as I've always done very well in English.
Laura is a harsh marker but she gives you lots of constructive feedback As English is my second language this is a tough course for me By the way for those English is not their first language take Engl 12x series during spring and summer
I respected Laura as an English professor. She is extremely passionate about her job and clearly loves what she is doing. Assignments were fair, and she invested time to give back helpful feedback. Attendance and active participation matter to get a good grade! No midterm, and I felt the final was fair. Would definitely recommend her!
Laura is one of the best English Professors I've had! She's super sweet, understanding, and clarifies what she expects. I loved her lectures, and she gives wonderful and helpful feedback. Never felt intimated in her class. Coming to class is important. As long as you pay attention in class, read the assigned readings, you're fine! Would take again!
If you're a decent writer, you can get a pretty decent mark! It's the participation that screwed me over. Just raise your hand every once and a while to get those marks. From what I observed, even if you don't make sense, she'll just be happy you said something!
She is really kind and gives easy participation marks, so go to class you won't regret it (10%). The only problem is that she is a tough marker and decides the rest of your grade after your first paper so do really well on that one and go ask her for help.
Very friendly and approachable. Not sure where the comments about her being condescending are, any time someone makes an in class comment she always appears thrilled to hear other's opinions. Not a very easy marker, but avoiding simple mistakes will save you a lot of marks. Attendance mandatory.
Laura is the best teacher ever, except for her brother!
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Laura's class. Her reading were all interesting and engaging (medieval feminism, colonial cannibalism, oversexed poetry) and her teaching style was fun, relaxed and relatable.
Marking scheme is a mess and a tough marker on all assignments. If you want a professor who simply gives you notes on a text so you can write about it on your final essay, look elsewhere. Active in-class participation during discussions is expected by all students.
I am a 4th year English major and Laura is by far the most enthusiastic English professor I've had! Her comments on my essays were extremely detailed, clear, and helpful. She really cares about what she's teaching and it made her lectures much more interesting. Thank you Laura!
a very fair prof, as long as you showed up and wrote something you're guaranteed a 70. takes attendance. with 122 each prof picks a theme for the class (ex. twins) & we looked at how they changedwere different through different textmedia. she used mainly modern things & was pretty easy to follow. definitely recommend
Loved this prof and class! Super sweet lady. Very enthusiastic and passionate about what she teaches. Encourages lots of class participation. Gives good feedbackconstructive criticism on assignments and is very helpful if you ask questions. If you keep up with the readings and go to class (she takes attendance), you will do well.
Laura is a fantastic teacher. Very engaging and knowledgeable! She is amusing, and engages in very thought provoking class discussions. Overall an excellent English professor. Do g to class and participate as participation is part of the course mark.
Her interests lie in early modern gender and politics in England. Readings are short and interesting. Grading criteria are crystal clear.
The best english class that I've taken! Laura is always there to help before or after class and gives feedback on every piece of writing that is handed in. She's a pretty easy marker and gives a very clear instructions for assignments. She does attendance every class but just send an email if you won't be there, she's very understanding!
Laura is incredibly kind. She is willing to match the effort that you are willing to put in. Her passion is on medieval history, and she completely devotes herself to making sure it as interesting to her class as it is to her. Laura is honestly a blessing to have as a teacher. She cares a lot about participation.
Amazing, so helpful! English is usually not my favourite class but loved her! Not a crazy amount of reading.
She was really good at helping with essays, just go to her office hours or make an appointment. There are quizzes, and other easy marks. Takes attendance which counts towards your participation grade. Easy marker on essays
She is a very good teacher and focuses on improving critical thinking and reading. She is very lovely to her students and is a careful grader who gives good feed back. she attaches a rubric, uses two different colours to highlight your strengths and weaknesses and explains your grade to you and how you can improve. She is very old school.
I enjoyed this class more than I originally thought I would and would highly recommend it! Dr. Schechter gives great, detailed feedback and is great at facilitating and guiding discussion. There is quite a bit of reading, some of it difficult, but I found most of it to be very educative and enjoyable. Clear and easy-to-follow lecturer.
Absolutely Terrible. Do NOT take this prof. She hates engineering students. This prof has a stick stuck in a certain place...
Laura is a kind, caring and respectful professor who really wants to see her students succeed. She went out of her way to make her classes fun and did well in creating an inclusive atmosphere where every students opinion mattered. She is not an overly hard marker and if you show up and put some effort in , you will have an easy A.
AMAZING. I loved Laura I feel like I learned so much in her class, she is so caring and passionate truly an incredible prof. She is very clear on her expectations, participation is important and you must do the readings. She's easily accessible outside of the classroom and is always willing to meet. Work hard and you will do well.
I never liked english until I had Laura as a prof. She is amazing! I got 70s in high school english but ended up with an A+ in her class. If you show up, participate, aren't on your phone during class, you should do alright. I am a shy kid and hate speaking in front of a class but she is extremely accommodating with that stuff. Highly recommend
take her, she's so nice, class is breeze and topics are interesting. overall no issues, no final too wich is great for a 5 semester course.
Great prof, welcoming to all ideas. For an 8 am class, she was full of energy. One paper, one project, 3 quizzes. She encourages group discussion but you are allowed to participate via email (sending your thoughts about the text). I didn't read the major texts but still got a decent mark in this class. Overall, would recommend!
Overall not bad, I was just SO bored in her classes. She just lectures to you instead of having a discussion based class. I did get a good grade though for the amount of effort I put in, so if you're looking for an easy grade and willing to go to class (she takes attendance) you'll do great with her.
i really really liked the topic of our english 103 class and i liked that she made our groups for our group work. she seems really nice and is nice overall but she was hard to approach and not very understanding about needing extra time or missing class. I had an unfortunate event happen and she wasnt very understanding or accommodating
One of my favourite English profs I've ever had. There are always lots of ways to get a great grade in her classes. Yes, doing the readings matter, obviously, but she always does her best to make the material super interesting. She's a super caring prof with clear notes and fair marking criteria.
Laura was such an easy professor, and her expectations were very typical. For instance, your participation with class discussion significantly matters, as well as your attendance. It will affect your overall mark in the end. However, she was a great professor as long as you are genuinely willing to learn.
Loved Laura!! Such an easy prof, good marker, easy to talk too! Definitely take her
I would take a class with Dr. Schechter again in a heartbeat. She is a very sweet and caring individual, as well as a great lecturer. She gives back great feedback and is very flexible with due dates. However, beware of the grammar quizzes.
Laura is a great prof! Very kind and open to all sorts of ideas! Would definitely take her class again
I can't really describe her better than "Might as well give her a shot." She great for some, not great for others. The nice thing is if you don't like her you still wont fail the course, she is very fair. The weighting of assignments is strange but is good for your grade. No 'textbook', but a cheap course pack that is necessary.
Laura was absolutely amazing for my first university level english course, could not have asked for a better prof! If you have the option to take her class, don't think twice about it. If you're not a huge fan of english like myself, you'll find that her class it super low stress, just put in the effort and you're guaranteed at least an A- !
She is an awesome first-year English prof I actually enjoyed the class and was taking it for credits. She is super clear and a fair marker and such a sweet woman! She totally makes the extra effort for her students to succeed and is easily accessible.
Ive taken three classes with Dr. Schechter now, and I would take many more with her if I could. Easily one of the best professors I have ever had; she truly cares about her students and is incredibly helpful. Her assignments are very straight forward, if you put in effort, you will do well. I would highly recommend her as a professor.
professor schechter gives very helpful feedback on essays. shes always happy to help. participate in group work and discussion forums to earn a good participation grade. the class wasnt too hard to get an A in, but take my review with a grain of salt because englishs my strong subject. put in effort and you can do great!
Professor Schechter is gem! I've taken a lot of English courses, and her course is at the top of my list. She is accessible, kind, and marks fairly. Medieval English is a difficult course to make interesting, but I think she did an amazing job. As long as you put in the work, you'll do well.
I have had Laura twice now (ENGL 212/ENGL 325). She is organized, detailed, and super smart. She has alot of components to her classes, including discussion boards, roundtable presentation, annotate bib, final essay, final.. it sounds like alot but it makes the class interesting. Youre in good hands with this prof! I recommend her!
Dr. Schechter was amazing! Always willing to answer any questions (and I had a lot), super kind, and takes pride in course delivery. Absolutely take this class with her if you can, highly recommend!
I've taken three courses with Dr. Schechter so far, and she remains one of my favourite profs in the department. She's approachable and accessible outside of class. She can assign a lot of papers, but that is expected in a 400 level. She's a fair marker as well and assigns really interesting texts for class.
Hands down one of the best profs Ive ever had. Incredibly gentle, approachable and understanding. She presents the material in an interesting and engaging way. Dr. Schechter is very intelligent and gives excellent feedback, which really helped me improve my writing. She gives very interesting assignments, often with some creative options.
Dr. S was one of the most amazing professors I've had the opportunity to learn from. She's super respectful and understanding! I wouldn't say her course was easy by any means, but if you put in the effort and are passionate about what you write you are bound to do well in her course.
This is my second class with Dr. Schechter now and I can't say enough good things about her. Medieval Lit. can be a dull class at times but Dr. Schechter made it interesting. Always willing to help you with anything you're struggling with and is very understanding if you need an extension. Absolutely take this class with her if you can.
Absolutely amazing prof. Assessments were so manageable and her feedback is incredible. Extremely understanding and patient. Book meetings with her to go over your questions as she gives amazing tips to better your writing. Topic is interesting with the real-life application aspect. Would recommend Dr. Schechter to everyone.
I would definitely take another one of her classes if given the chance. She was incredibly considerate and flexible. She offered excellent feedback and frequently made herself available to answer specific questions about the readings and the assignments. She delivered medieval texts in an interesting and engaging way.
Please take an English course with this professor. You will not regret it. The lectures were detailed, and she is knowledgeable about the topics she discusses, especially Shakespeare. Prof. Schechter was clear with grading guidelines, encourages discussion, and was extremely accommodating with time extensions for the completion of course work.
Honestly, it was great having a professor that enabled a smooth transition from high school. As long as you are genuinely willing to put in the work for the course (and trust me, there's a lot), you'll be fine. If you seem like you're struggling though, definitely visit her in office hours as she is extremely accommodating and understanding!
Just an amazing prof. She gave us only like 3 assignments the whole year and the whole time was just spent learning how to write and read better with presentations. Super easy, caring, and an all around great experience. I would highly recommend this teacher to anyone.
Very sweet prof and clearly cares about her students. I am a sciences student but had to take this course as a junior requirement. I typically struggle with writing but this class was easy when it came to papers. She outlines what she wants and is very flexible. Participation really does matter
She is a very tough grader! Got a C+ in engl 103! Stay away from her if you want to boost your GPA!
This was the class I was most worried about and it ended up being my best grade. If you participate in class and follow the rubrics you will get an A. Laura is so kind and wants to see her students succeed. She gives helpful feedback and even uses her class time to go over research tools, MLA and other important writing tools.
This professor was absolutely awesome. I was in my first year first semester and by far was my favourite. She is very kind and makes the classroom very comfortable. I definitely recommend her for engl 103 - our topic was medieval women and she made it very interesting and easy to follow and write about.
You can tell that she is super passionate about the texts that she discusses. She is super lenient on marking essays and has a few quizzes that just prove that you read the required text (10 questions super easy questions). She gives really good feedback on essays and uses a rolling deadline week instead of one day where the essay is due.
Super lovely person and prof. Her lectures can get kinda nitpicky and specific but they also have no real impact on tested content or marks so it's okay. Her rolling deadlines are awesome and you can tell that she really enjoys what she teaches. If your topic with her is anything about early modern women you are going to learn a lot.
Great Prof! The best assessments for grades I've ever had in an English class. She is a totally reasonable marker. The Class is almost entirely discussion and reading based, lectures are very short. If you care about the participation grade you actually have to talk. I found the course material a little dry but delivered well. Would recommend!
Professor Schechter is so lovely. She's kind and creates a warm and comfortable class environment. She is flexible and willing to accommodate. She was really understanding of my circumstances and gave me another chance to complete a small assignment. Personally, I thought she marked easy. I am planning on taking another course with her in the fall.
Second time with Laura and I cannot recommend her enough! Super manageable assignments (quick worksheet, annotated bibliography, final essay) and a great final exam. She is SUPER accommodating to ALL needs and is the SWEETEST prof I've ever met. Class is a good balance of lecture and discussion, and the topics are fantastic! TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!!!!
I took both ENGL 102 and ENGL 103 with Dr. Laura Schechter and I could not recommend her enough. I rediscovered my love for English in her class, which prompted me to switch my major. I appreciated that participation was based on forum posts and the major assignments were all clear. PLEASE TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU CAN!!
SHE IS THE BEST EVER. There is a participation mark which is unfortunate. BUT she assigns very little reading and her lectures are actually useful / entertaining. She marks very fair. Engineering is tough and she sympathizes (makes life easier). I would do the readings and kinda participate in class. I got an A- on major assignments. PICK HER.
One of my favourite profs I've had. Laura is so sweet and cares about her students, The class is mainly discussion-based, with some straightforward assignments and papers. She is quick to answer emails and anyone looking for an English course should try their best to make sure it is with Laura.
I absolutely LOVED Laura! She is the nicest and most caring prof I have ever had. She made me excited to come to class and participate. She is also such an easy marker and gives rolling deadlines for virtually everything. Highly HIGHLY recommend!!!!
Final essay worth 30 percent and final exam also worth 30 percent. Class was over all good but all the work is literally done in the last week so the class seems easy until the end.
Laura was accessible in and outside of class, but the assessments did not reflect the class. I do not quite know what I learned in this class. I felt the readings were all over the place and feel that the class was not guided by a concept or theme. There were so many topics covered in this class that it diminished the significance of each issue.
Laura was INCREDIBLE super accomodating and understanding and she's so knowlegable about so many topics and she will always value your insights and opinions in class. Course Expectations were very clearly presented from the start and she is a fair marker she provides in class workshops and links on eclass that will help you to succeed.
Course expectations were very clearly discussed from the beginning of the term and English courses typically have a variety of different topics to discuss because they are discussion-based courses. Laura was a phenomenal instructor she made assignment instructions easy to understand and was always availabe for extra help
I truly enjoyed this course and found Professor Schechter to be extremely understanding and kind. Participation does matter but it really isn't anything to stress about.
She is full of energy and absolutely brilliant! She made the class so interesting and wasn't afraid to tackle awkward topics. There is a lot of reading, but the materials are entertaining and easy to read. She's always kind and understanding, and her grading is fair. Highly recommend taking her class if you get the chance!
Prof. Schechter cares a lot and is one of the nicest profs. Please take her classes! It is not an easy A, but she is a fair marker and she is so knowledgable. The lectures are interesting and readings are enjoyable. She cares about helping students. I am grateful to have taken one of her classes. This was easily among my top 5 favourite classes.
Dr. Schechter is a very kind and sweet person, but almost every class reading ended up in a long discussion that, from my experience, didn't help with the assignments. Also, the assignments weren't always explained very well. The final paper was very open-ended & the instructions were a tad confusing. She was always willing to answer questions tho
Made us buy her book for the readings. You have to read something before every class, sometimes it takes 5 minutes, sometimes it takes 2 hours. Fair grades given for essays
Very caring and understanding professor, but second graded assessment was mostly marked on a reading from two weeks prior and was closed book. Beware of this, but otherwise she was great.
Professor Schechter is an absolute gem - super accommodating and understanding. The class has a good balance of discussion and lecture, and assignments are manageable. Unstuck AI was a game-changer for exam prep.
Laura is super knowledgeable and caring! Knows what she's talking about, grades fairly. Very accomodating for illnesses/fears of public speaking. Highly recommend.
I loved this class! Her topic was very interesting, and she is super passionate about it. Her lectures were fairly interesting, and I was excited to come to class every time. She has a course package of all our readings. Her grading is fair. I would have Laura again as a professor. She is super sweet and treats all her students with kindness!
I enjoyed my time with Dr. Schechter, she gives really good feedback and is so respectful and caring when you have questions. There are required reading per class but they're interesting so it can be done. variety of assessment, so not just essays so you have a chance to do better!
I have taken two classes with Dr.Schechter, and I must write about how brilliant and caring she is. You can tell how deeply she cares about the success and wellbeing of students. She is so understanding. Every lecture was so informative and thought-provoking, too. (I took ENGL 337 with Dr.Schechter, but couldn't find the class code on here.)
Dr. Schechter is an extremely good English teacher. She has very entertaining lectures and is very enthusiastic. The grading is fair and it is set up for you to succeed. Only thing I didn't enjoy is the mandatory participation where the average is set to a B-.
