This was the best class ever! I learned so much, and Prof. Scott is down to earth, and really cares about her students. Can't wait to take her again in the fall!
Students of the world,UNITE! This Prof. is really boring and is a waste of time. She is not organized and assignments are not very interesting. Check out the awful reviews she got at other rating websites, and there are blogs too. Good luck finding a better teacher cause this is not the one to take!
This teacher is awful and i regret taking her. chose wisley.
Inexperienced teaching style, tricky test and just plain dull Prof.
Every once in awhile a great Prof. comes along, unfortunately she is not one of them. If the classes weren't so scarce I would drop her in a minute. I see "someone" is flagging students ratings of Ms. Scott, but the blue faces below expain it all. I am blue and sad that I am stuck with this sub-standard Professor. Try one of the many others.
Loved this class! Prof Scott is interesting and makes the topic easy to relate to. Will definitely take another class of hers.
very good class if you are interested to learn about it, not an easy class but very enjoyable...
This is the best professor I have ever had.
Terrible, boring, plan and does not teach very well! BEWARE!
i wasn't interested at this class at all, until i walked in to the class room...the way that this prof. explains soc. in human behavior and their role in human society,it was inspiring, all and all i wanna say that i have never ever met a professor that knows and brings a class so close to their student as prof scott, just wanna say,GREAT JOB SCOTT!!!
Prof. scott is awsome! At first when I knew we were going to have to do a group project I was intimidated but it turned out well. If you need help she explained well. She made class very fun by letting us participate and interacting. She's not easy but if you do the work and read the chapters you will be fine. She also offers Xt credit. I recomend!
Super Great teacher! She explains Soc very well. Made class very fun.offers plenty of fun xt credit. Shes not easy, but do the work and u will be fine!Good Job prof Scott!I recommend!
Prof. Scott is very passionate about her field and I really enjoyed her class. She is a little unorganized and goes off topic and gets behind.Overall she is great and I would recommend her.
Idon't know why so many negative comments. I really loved this class. She makes the class fun and interisting. pay attention! work is tough but worth it!!
This is the best class! It is fun! We learn so much, and she is also the kind of teacher that gets us to do stuff, she is funny and energetic, and loves what she does. You might think that should be obvious, but I have taken alot of classes, and it's actually rarely the case. To the hater it doesnt even matter because real Valley students know!
Great teacher! she's not easy but if you need help on something she helps you.I love her teaching style because she involves the class in disscussion so it;s not boring. I would def recommend!
She great! She made class very fun! She's not easy, but she is helpful if you dont understand something. She gives XT credit oppurtunities. I recommend!
AMAZING professor. She really cares about her students and I enjoyed taking her, and look forward to taking her again in the future. Her class is not easy, you do need to do work, but you learn a lot. She gives EC opportunities, and she's fun. If you want to actually learn something, and work for your A, I strongly recommend her.
Wasn't easy, but worthwhile! She tried her best to engage the class. Simple assignments, not too hard, just time consuming. Study for the midterm and final and you're good. She gives plenty of E.C. opportunities. Put in the work, and you'll get an A, that's how I did it!
She is really fun and cute! Worth being in her class. She is loud and cusses sometimes haha
I had absolutely no interest in the Soc class I ended up taking last semester, but Ms Scott made it completely worthwhile, totally entertaining, and very informative. Am looking forward to taking her again next semester. (She's also super cute..)
this prof is the best thing every happen in my education, loved every sec of the lectures,...she is an amaaaziing professor...we need more people like her in LAVC
Very firm on what she believes. She seemed more like a stand up comedian than a professor, but hey that's always fun. Don't insult anything that's liberal.
It's pretty obvious that everyone agrees she's an amazing professor. She's funny, intelligent, has a wonderful personality, and most of all she cares about her students and is extremely passionate about sociology. Don't expect because she's chill you can slack off! Do your work, study, don't mess with her, and you will get an A! I LOVE HER!
She is an amazing, passionate teacher who really cares about her students. Has really inspired me and I'm now majoring in Sociology. She is definitely my favorite teacher!
Love Prof. Scott...totally inspired me to major in a subject I wasn't really interested in, at first...I am now! Here lectures are always interesting, giving lots of practical examples. Her passion for the subject energizes the room. Take her class, you won't be disappointed!
Looks & humor aside, she is very educated & knowledgeable in her field. If you're looking for a solid understaning of Soc, take her. One thing that makes her great as a professor is her youthful disposition, she can communicate with students like most professors can't, and she will only get better over time.
Honestly, I'm not one to critique professors on here but professor Scott is definitely worth it! don't lie or cheat, DO show up to class, and READ THE BOOK. I can't say she's easy but she's definitely worth the effort.Super educated and helpful. 2 tests & 1 project/essay. oh, and if you take her night class you'll never be dismissed before 9:55!
The best teacher i had so far. I never missed class because class discussions were the best. She is very knowledgeable but yet humble. Just follow her instructions go to class and study and you'll do fine. Like past comments have said she is an attractive professor.
Highly Recommend! had her for criminology and the class was very interesting. The book is essential and you must read on your own. She lectures but also opens up the class for discussion, which can be very fun and interesting. Show up everyday. Only 2 tests and 1 group project. Shes funny and passionate about the subject.
Laura is a feminist sociologist (she said it herself) who is brilliant. You will learn a lot in her class, and although I didn't enjoy it, it was still a good class. One thing I hope she changes the textbook, and beware there are only 2 exams! Much of whats on the exam is from her lectures, so take good notes & go the final reviews and you'll be ok
Am taking an online class with this professor she think we have no life homework every week. Common we have full time jobs and a life give us some break, each question she gives has a lot of questions ridicules and then she want u to read two of your classmate topic and talk about seriously you need to chi lout.
scott is a great professor her lectures are very interesting but her tests are very hard you definitley have to study for it and show up to class she does take attendance once in a while so you never really know when she might take row. over all not a bad class you have lots of extra credit opportunities
She's really sweet, her tests are hard and you have to study but the rest of her class is pretty easy.. I took Soc 1 with her and she gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Because of her I am really involved with campus clubs now. Great teacher! I definitely recommend her :)
I took this class online, homework due every week, term and final test are so hard nothing from the book all her questions are logical she think were all should know about sociology, she's nice and answers all ur messages, but she need to start giving questions from the book she's making us getting bad grade with her hard tests.
Dont have words to explain her, shes awesome! Shes passionate about what she teaches. one midterm, and the final. Gives alot of extra credit opportunities. Loved her class it was so interesting, the hw, the inclass projects everything! Just dont ask obvious questions! Passed with an A, learn the material in the book and have fun :)
Her lectures are interesting but her midterm is hard and tricky. Most people in class did poorly. She only gives 2 exams plus a term paper. Also very difficult to make an appt. with her. Considering dropping her class.
This is really my favorite class ever. It gets kind of roudy sometime, but that's what makes it fun, and professor scott is cool about it. She lets the class go with the flow, and because of that we all learn a lot. Great class!
Honestly, Professor Scott is my favorite professor at Valley. Im not a Soc. major but Im taking my third class with her! She makes lessons fun and interesting. Sociology has secretly become my guilty pleasure because of her! Take her, you'll learn ALOT!
online class, scott doesn't seem too interested in responding to questions. 2 exams only and tricky. Modules are interesting though but everything is from the book.Should have dropped the class :(
The class was easy enough, but the professor doesn't interact in the discussions. Or at least she stopped one third of the way through the semester. She also got really behind in grading so it was hard to figure out where you stood. It was an easy enough class. Probably not recommended for those serious sociology students.
The best class ever! It was entertaining at times. I highly recommend taking her class, in person not online, because online classes are horrible!
Have taken both online & face to face classes with this professor and she is awesome in both. Her passion for sociology come through in her online class as well. She isn't easy but makes her classes interesting and give some fun assignments. She is fair, just do the work. Because of prof Scott I am now a sociology major!
Great prof, no complaints, very fair. Online class was not difficult, just have to do work, and a little out of the box thinking. Was relatively "easy" for me since I know what profs want to see & hear in these types of classes. Only regret is I missed out on Prof's awesome personality b/c online class. Highly recommend. Happiness :-)
Professor Scott is one of the best professors at Valley. As far as her class goes she gives a midterm and a final and maybe one assignment. Go to class because she gets a lot done in one class and if you take notes along with reading the book you will get an A. She is no push over so don't slack off. I highly recommend her!
BEST BEST BEST PROFESSOR AT VALLEY!!!!!!!!!!
This professor seemed inconsistent. Enthusiastic about the subject one day and just rushing through the next, same with her lectures. Her exams are nothing like her teaching style and you better totally understand the concepts or you are in trouble.Absolutely know "everything" on the study guide. Not the best professor I've had at LAVC.
Best class ever! If you find her tests so tricky and hard it's probably because you're dumb and/or lazy and didn't study! This professor is very fair and goes way more above and beyond than any other teacher I've ever had!
Nice teacher. Grade does include participation, so be sure to attend class. She is a very interesting teacher although sometimes she sounds a little less confident than a professor normally does. But very good teacher, very good class. Grade is based on 2 exams, 10% participation, and one final group paper.
Professor Scott is AWESOME! She is super friendly and makes the class very interesting and kind of entertaining at times. She offers tons of extra credit, and responds quickly to emails. Read your book, and show up. I liked her class so much, I am taking her marriage and family class in the fall. Not an easy "A" but it's totally worth the work.
Really good teacher take advantage of the extra credit it will help out big time.
I am going to be really honest here, prof scott is not hard if you are here to do hard work. If you are not, don't take her. There are 2 exams, lots of in class participation assignments and we did a semester long group project. It was a great class. I learned so much and I am totally hooked!
This teacher is awful and i regret taking her. too much work for a summer session.
She is SO awesome. I look forward to attending her class. She's real, nice, and funny. P. Scott will teach you a lot about yourself and the world that you didn't realize before. Very interesting and entertaining class. Would reccomend to anyone.
Easy going professor, fun lectures and a very interesting class it self. people complaining about it being hard are just lazy, she gives you a review, 90% of questions are straight from it, the other 10 are from her lectures. test can be tricky if you don't listen to her or don't open a book. overall great professor!
All I have to say here is that it's very possible to get an A in this course IF, and only IF you are willing to put in a lot of effort and hard work. Professor Scott is extremely helpful and understanding. She wants everyone to pass the class. You just have to do the reading and pay attention during the lectures.
This professor gets behind and you have really know the book. Her lectures are sometimes but she is very inconsistent and you better take good notes. Her midterm was exceptionally hard comparEd to her teaching style. Very hard to talk to her as she always seems in a hurry to leave class. Not my favorite professor at Valley.
Amazing teacher. Can understand really well. Makes the class interesting. Understands assignments well. Good lectures. Very helpful when I ask for help. Easy to understand. Makes class interesting. Would definitely take sociology again with you. Understands the teaching materials really well. Works well with students. Great club advisor!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont be lazy! all you have to do is read!
This is my favorite class I have ever had. In one word it is fun. Every class meeting we learn new things and see the world in a different way. People come to class and participate in ways I don't see in my other classes which just makes it so easy. I look forward to coming to class. I have never felt that way about a teacher before.
professor scott is really nice and she makes the class very interesting. as long as you read the chapters and listen in class you will get a good grade :)
I will agree that her lectures are interesting but her mid term (she only gives two exams) is nothing like her teaching style. Exam is hard and tricky and you need to know material In the book as she gets behind in her lectures and the material is On the exam. Better take advantage of ALL extra credit!
She's a wonderful teach, and I'm happy that I toke her class. Would I take it again? I'd be happy to, but you must keep up with the book and her lectures or you will get lost easily. But overall she has a great passion for sociology, and that's what i believe every college student should look for.
She is an awesome teacher. Cares very much about her students and participation does matter. Not too much reading, 2 tests based on lecture and book notes. There is one final group project again no too hard. Loved her class definitely would take her again !!
Class wasn't interesting at all. Essay was not easy because she didn't explain it at all. Wouldn't recommend her
Professor Scott is nice. She likes participation and she enjoys teaching sociology. Personally, the study guide does not help just because some words that are included won't be on the tests. There are journals, a midterm, a group research paper, and a final. Work is manageable(took this class in the summer). Be ready to read and work.
I had professor scott the spring 15 semester. great professor! one of the best sociology professors! very helpful! durable course if you pay attention, read, and study! 1 midterm, 1 final, journal and term paper plus A LOT OF extra credit opportunities, do all of it just to be secure of your grade ! easy A if you do everything your suppose to do.
I took this class summer 2015. I loved the class, it was sooo much work but It was just a taste of what the rest of the college semesters will be like. Don't expect to just sit and pass, it's a challenge and if you're willing to give it your all u will pass. Take notes and pay attention, the tests are based on notes and lectures.
amazing lecturer and wonderful professor. took her during the summer and I was dreading it at first but it turned out to be the best college class I have ever taken as a 2nd year. Not an easy A (tests are tricky if you don't study the textbook material) but definitely doable. Just do ALL of the work, don't be lazy, and do the extra credit too!
Some interesting lectures. As previously mentioned, she gets behind & tests are tricky. Midterm study guide is a long list of terms.. She tends to contradict herself, so read the book and take notes. Only 2 exams, group project and busy work assignments, like a journal, that seems more appropriate for for HS than college. EC yes, take advantage.
Relatively easy class, as long as you pay attention. She posts her powerpoints online, so there isn't a need for excessive notes, but its a good idea to take some. She makes the class interesting and fun. As long as you do the assignments around when they're assigned, the work and reading go by quickly and easily.
Most fun class. I was dreading taking a winter class, but I am so glad to be in Professor Scott's class. I have learned so much, and now I am really inspired to be in school. This semester has gone so fast and I will actually be sad when it is over.
The best professor I've encountered at LAVC by far! Prof. Scott's class is definitely not easy but it's a class worth taking! I looked forward to every lecture and got a chance to connect with classmates that I never would have gotten to know through the group project. Her class opened my mind & changed my way of thinking. Take this class!!!
Prof Scott is an amazing lecturer. She's very energetic and makes everyone comfortable enough to want to participate. There's 1 big main group term paper and presentation, a midterm, and a final. Exams are easy if you read the textbook and pay attention to lectures. She's super helpful and really cares about her students. Best professor ever!
Took this class during winter session so it was fast paced. Only 2 exams , need to take advantage of EC. Some interesting lectures but a lot of info crammed into just 6 weeks, is a tough grader. Definitely need the book. Ok class.
"I went as a capitalist and walked out more human." Were the words I said to her the last day I saw her. In this class you will learn so much about the world you live in, how capitalism works and how we empower such a monster. Professor Scott is great, you will love her, even if you don't fall in love with her. Best sociologist. TAKE HER.
Taking this class online and although the subject matter is somewhat interesting, not much interaction from this professor. You kind of teach yourself. Discussion participation IS mandatory. Just a midterm and final. Midterm was tough, there is a study guide but it is just terms. Read the book it's essential.
Good teacher. Took this class online due to my schedule. The textbook chosen for the course was informative along with the lecture notes provided by professor Scott. Fun course, along with the usual work. I've taken a few classes online and by far her class has been one of my favorites. Mid term essay was actually fun to write.
She's an awesome professor. I really enjoyed taking her sociology class. She assigned a huge group project at the beginning of the semester; I was dreading it at first, but as I did it periodically, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend her class to people whom are looking for a sociology class to take. :)
OK professor, midterm & final, group project, know the book and notes. Class wasn't bad but it isn't easy and you need to do the work. There is homework. Some interesting lectures. Was a required class and wasn't inspired to take another sociology class.
I have never LOVED a professor before but Professor Scott is just amazing. So much fun to listen to. Makes me crack up throughout class and I actually WANTED to do my homework and study. Great person, great professor.
Took both online and face to face class with this professor. Preferred her online class, it's organized and easy to navigate. In her face to face class she tends to get behind and you will have a group project. Some interesting lectures but she is opinionated. Learn the concepts, know the book as her few tests cover a lot of material.
Professor Scott was amazing so thankful to have ended up in her class. Mind expansion accomplished.
TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!! Please! She is brilliant! She is the ideal teacher for sociology & she will make you THINK and your opinions will change! She's got such a wonderful personality, she makes the class fun & interacts with students a great deal. She shows interesting videos & gives assignments that are actually a pleasure to do. One of my favorite teachers thus far, I won't forget her.
super funny professor - class doesn't get boring - tests based off her power point - journals aren't hard but take time
She assigns homework sometimes but she won't collect it until the only two tests: the midterm and final. That is good if you are usually late with turning in homework because you can catch up but don't wait to do it all until the last minute because they are 1-2 page write ups. Good with extra credit but beware of the semester-long group project.
As stated before she is big on the group projects, pick your partners wisely. There are only 2 exams, midterm & final, which are term intensive. She does asign homework. This is not an easy A class especially if you are not a Soc major and just need to get through it. A few interesting lectures from a very liberal, protest minderd point of view.
I find it laughable when disgruntled students of Professor Scott warn of her "strong opinions". They're not opinions if they're backed by substantial empirical data! They're facts, coming from a learned sociologist who is great at what she does. If you want an engaging, competent Professor, take Scott! Her class is life-changing!
I fell in love with her. She is strict but funny, don't get on her bad side. She is reasonable and gives out extra credit, if you don't get at least a B you were clearly just not paying attention or slacking way too hard.
Overall an OK class, some interesting lectures, busy work assignments, her opinion counts & tough grader. Do assignments and take advantage of EC.
Took Professor Scotts's Sociology 001 online class and it was great!! Very interesting and easy lectures. She adds fun in her class and isn't boring for an online class. Make sure you log in daily to stay on top of your assignments and you will pass. Got an A on my term paper which was fun to write.
SHE IS PHENOMENAL! She changed my life honestly, my views on everything- she teaches you how to think, to question everything & break out of norms & be less judgmental. Her class is really easy- as long as you care a bit. Please take Professor Scott for sociology, she is seriously a rare gem. She sets the bar for what a teacher should be
Anyone who says professor Scott is "opinionated" probably was just offended by the fact that she BREAKS SOCIAL NORMS- like a sociology teacher should! She is the greatest teacher to teach this subject- she cares and she will flip your world upside down- For the better. She's not opinionated, she's doing her job as a sociology teacher
I took the online class, sociology 3 (crime and delinquency) with professor Scott. Honestly, she is amazing. Weekly discussions, 1 midterm and the final. Gives lots of extra credit. She is a reasonable grader and gives great feedback. I got an A even though I did poorly on my midterm. I absolutely recommend her. She's great!
Very nice and funny professor! She offers a lot of extra credit! Lots of paper only if you procrastinate, I was undecided on my major but now I want to be a soc major
If you are sensitive, some remarks may hurt your feelings, but you cannot blame her for being honest on social structures and real perspectives that are out in the world. She is a sociologist. That is what they do. Breaking the norms. Basically, if you wish to get a good grade you want to take good notes. The book literally isn't required.
I took this class during Winter semester and I can't stress enough how amazing this class was! Professor Scott gives amazing lectures, and she's really funny and charismatic. Since it was a 5 week class there was a lot of work to do but if you do the assignments on the syllabus (which is very clear and easy to understand) you will get a good grade.
Absolutely loved the way she formatted her class. 2 Journals. 1 midterm . 1 final . Group Project. And that's it! Wait I forgot one thing... "A"
This was my first online class. It was informative and thought provoking. As long as you do the assignments and get them in on time you're golden. I think I'll attend future sociology classes on campus rather than online because discussion is very important, it's difficult to have meaningful, productive discussions and debate in an online class.
Took this online so the book is essential as well as participation in the mandatory discussions. Modules are thorough but her exams are tricky. Some chapters are pretty interesting but this class did not inspire me to continue with sociology. Just do the work and you will pass.
Took professor online, there are a number of discussions that in order to get full credit you have to respond to at least 2 of your classmates post. Offered extra credit which helped a lot since my group and I bombed on our term paper. Offered book online for free. Helped. Good professor!
Doable online class but you have to put in the time, mandatory discussions, take advantage of extra credit as it will help.
this professor changed my life completely, her lectures are amazing and she is so funny! I would take her class every semester if she taught all of the sociology classes. Her group project is amazing you really get the chance to understand sociology and do your own sociological experiment. I LOVE HER
I'm not usually a person who participates in every class but this professor encouraged answers from students. Every lecture was interesting. I was never bored in class even though it was 3 hours. She loves the subject and it's obvious. Shes funny but sometimes rude and in a bad mood. She offers LOADS OF EXTRA CREDIT! I would take this class again!
I took Soc 01, Soc 03, and Soc 012 with her. She is amazing. If you work hard you'll get your A
Taking this class online and you basically teach yourself. This professor does not always respond to your emails. Did not spark my interest in sociology. Weekly mandatory discussions. Do not recommend this professor.
Best online class I have ever taken. I feel like people who think prof Scott is not available has never had any other online class, she always responded to my messages, gave comments on my posts, and made announcements about updates and stuff all the time. The class was interesting, i actually got something out of the disussions, I love her!!!!!!!!
Not a bad class if you do the work; discussion heavy, know the book and put in the time. Some interesting topics and organized format. Can't slack off, stay on top of readings and assignments and you'll be fine.
Scott's online class is very interesting. However, there are 14 class discussions and 2 exams worth 50 points each. Group project is with 75 points which is very hard if your group doesn't communicate. I took her twice and received A's. The exams are tricky, you want to read every detail in the book. Overall, she's awesome! She offers extra credit!
Book is essential to pass tests; midterm & final. Discussions are mandatory and there is a group project in this online class. If people in your group are weak you are pretty much screwed and professor does not take that into consideration. Some interesting chapters but overall a tedious class.
Great Professor, reading a lot , group project , participation and get a good grade . This was an online class and I definitely take with this professor again.
I took the honor class with her two years ago. I remember she said that this class will change our lives and I thought that was silly as it was just an intro class. Its been two years and THIS CLASS HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! This is what an academic experience should be like. I never missed a class because I just wanted to hear what she had to say
Doable online class if you are willing to do the work. Do ALL discussions. Basically your typical intro class.
Took soc 3 online and it was pretty easy. Weekly discussions with a minimum reply of 2 students. Thats the whole chunk of your grade (which shes pretty lenient on grading). There are 2 exams and one group research paper which is the worst! Overall, piece of cake as long as you do your weekly assignment. I learned a lot!
Know the book, terms and theories. Weekly discussions, 2 exams, and a group project that can potentially effect your grade. Definitely take advantage of extra credit as she is a tough grader. Basic intro class, should pass if you do ALL the work.
Best online class Ive ever taken! Discussions were interesting. Group project was kind of annoying because I had lame group members, but actually loved the project itself. Makes me want to be a sociology major!
Class is interesting but beware of the group project because your group can bring your grade down. Group projects are extremely difficult in an online class. Participation in discussions are mandatory as well as the book. Not sure if I would take another soc class.
Took her class during a 5 week summer session at 8 IN THE MORNING. She made it worth it to come to class at that time. Allows us to use whatever edition of the book we could get if it was cheaper. Really sweet and welcomes discussion and debate over certain topics that we've gone over in class.
Lots of material crammed into just 5 weeks and a lot of work. Sociology is a somewhat interesting subject but probably would have gotten more out of in a regular semester.
She's an amazing professor, i was in her class but decided to take her online class instead. She is vey passionate about the subject and you learn a lot. The online 8 week class is not hard as long as you do the work. I would definitely take her again if i needed any courses she taught.
I regret taking this class! Assignments are not interesting at all. If you a re stuck with lazy classmates, Goodluck with your group project! The Professor isnt helpful at all. Good luck trying to communicate with her over the internet! She isnt good at at responding and wont help you with anything! DO NOT RECOMMEND. Do NOT take this class!
AWESOME!!! Love this class and love this professor. She is very responsive and helpful. I'm not done with the class yet, but will probably get an A. I do all the assignments weekly and get helpful and witty comments in return. I did read somewhere she was cute, but Ill never know because I'm taking this online :) Highly recommended!
Online classes can be rough, this class is mediocre at best. Typical intro class. Do the work, participate in discussions and agree with her posts. Her responses to emails take on a sarcastic tone which was not very encouraging. Take advantage of extra credit.
I was really disappointed to read such negative comments about Professor Scott, This is my second time taking her class and trust me It was the greatest thing ever, I took her late Soc 12 class last minute, and I can't be any happier. She is always available to answer any question u may have, and gives you clear directions on what you need to do.
The grading criteria is clear and she leaves feedback every time you post. She doesn't respond quickly, but she does let you make up an assignment if there was a real problem. Just make sure to post your work on time and you'll be fine.
Professor Scott is an amazing Professor. Her passion for the subject shows through her lectures. I always looked forward to her class, never a dull moment. Take advantage of the extra credit . I would love to take another class with her. This class will change your perspective on everything.
Professor Scott is one of the most caring professors I've ever had. You can tell she really cares about her students. The journals were a bit tedious but the final and midterm were easy. There's a lot of room for extra credit!
(online class) Great professor. Mainly each week there is one discussion on Sundays, along with two comments. Not a difficult class. Don't miss deadlines and actually engage with the discussion topic and you're good to go. Study for exams!
Took this online. Participation in discussions is mandatory, know the book as exams are from book. This professor does not respond ton emails quickly but she will get back to you. For discussions, agree with her and take advantage of extra credit. I found this class a little dry and some of her views are dated. Class is doable though.
I took her summer class so it went a lot quicker, but I loved her class. The lectures were intresting and kept me engaged. She gives chances for extra credit and there was not homework everyday. Mostly reading and then chapter summaries. I learned a lot and really liked her.
Best Professor I have ever had! She keeps it real! I have learned so much, and I appreciate her so much!
Basic theory based intro class. Know the theorists, take good notes, and know the terms. Lectures can be dry but some are interesting. Professor takes awhile to get back to you if you email. Group project, pick your group wisely. Take advantage of EC, will help your grade.
I love professor scot. She is so nice and caring and no teacher has every helped me so much at LAVC. I'm even changing my major becasue of her.
Very great professor! My first semester at valley college and she was my favorite youll love her great energy and she loves a class that talks a lot lol powerpoints are the main source of lectures but shes my favorite!!! Youll enjoy her (:
Great professor.
Professor Scotts Soc 12 class (online) is super easy and enjoyable if you do the work. She always gives good feedback and offers multiple extra credit opportunities. Shes not a tough grader and theres only one big project but you have the entire semester to do it :)
Laura Scott is the best! TAKE HER you will not regretted.
Keep up with reading, post on time, know theorists and terms. Take advantage of extra credit as the professor is a thought grader. If you keep up with the work you should pass.
Professor Scott offers the book as an attachment to her syllabus, so you don't need to buy a book. I suggest you just do the work and participate, she is flexible and accommodating as long as you just give her proper notice though. The work load is average as any other course. Not a stressful course. Recommended.
Pay attention to syllabus, keep up with reading and assignments. Some interesting material. Professor is not always quick to respond to emails. Extra credit.
Professor Scott was by far my FAVORITE professor at LAVC! I took all the classes she taught and would take another in a heartbeat. She offers many extra credit opportunities, gives great feedback, and her lectures will keep you engaged! Whether you've never taken a Soc class before, or you're a Soc major, I would highly recommend any of her classes
Took her online for the winter and it was a breeze. 1 group project that is a maximum of 10pgs between your group. Discussions are a must and long responses for full credit. Book is free online she provides link. Hard to contact, expect 24hrs. Two 10 extra credit assign. Documentaries. Readings & articles. 2 timed exams of 50 multiple choice.
If you don't want to do work, participate, and basically contribute to the learning process, then don't take her. Exams are term heavy, group project so pick your group wisely, definitely take advantage of EC. Takes awhile to respond to emails. Took for an elective, would not take this professor again.
Professor Scott is by far an amazing and inspiring professor at LAVC. She was always available and she's very passionate about her work of studies. She made me fall in love with sociology. Her online lectures are just as amazing as in person. She helps you understand and grasp the information in a detailed & interesting way. One group project
Some lectures are interesting but the exams are term heavy so you need take good notes and know the book and especially the theorists. It's an intro class and might be suited more to soc majors. I'm taking it as an elective and not that interested in the subject. Professor is not objective. EC is offered.
She is an amazing professor I really recommend her. Her lectures are really interesting and she is hilarious. Overall she is a great professor but your gonna have to work for our grade.
Professor Scott is a solid teacher, and is dedicated to her profession. She gives detailed and informative feedback on each assignment, and doesn't overburden you will unnecessary assignments. Quick to respond to questions, fair grading; Professor Scott is definitely worth your time.
You basically teach yourself in this online class and not much interaction from this professor. if you do the work you'll pass. Don't recommend though ,find another professor.
Your basic intro class, lots of theories, follow instructions and agree with prof. Take advantage of extra credit. Put in the work to make the class doable.
Professor Scott is understanding and will grade late work. The homework is basically one discussion per week with a 5 question practice quiz which is really easy. At the end of the class, there is a group research paper that is 8-10 pages that she doesn't really explain how to do but doesn't grade strictly if you just do the work.
This was the most organized online course I have ever taken. She goes week by week, gives to-do lists so you know exactly what to do, she makes videos for things like term paper instructions. She is also very caring. I had some difficult times this semester, and she was the only professor who was willing to work with me to get me back on track.
GREAT! It was online course but was made very clear and easy to understand. There was a weekly discussion post and quiz, but nothing difficult to complete. Her feedback was great and she held a lot of great discussion questions. Answered any questions quickly. Not a heavy grader, she was a reasonable and open minded grader. Highly recommend!
The professor is amazing. She makes her class interesting and not boring at all. She has a group project which sucks because not everyone does their part and end up receiving credit for it. There are no quizzes just a mid term and final which are easy, she provides a study guide. The book is a free PDF which is provided on canvas.
Professor Scott, Is the most knowledgeable crime and deviance professor, I've ever taking. Her syllabus is detailed- organized and straight to the point. Reading the free- book she provides is mandatory, weekly discussions, mid- term, and one group project. I loved that she provides great feedback, and she wants her students to excel in her class.
Very disappointed with this Professor.
This professor is not accessible. Her syllabus is organized but this profwessor is biased in her teaching style. Opposing views are not open for discussion. You will pass if you do the work and know the terms. Your typical intro class. Would not recommend this professor.
Loved her. Every bit of the class was amazing and I would take it again if I could. There are a few papers(journals and a term paper), due and they were the majority of the homework. Her class was amazing and she was really inspirational when it came to her lectures. She had two exams and extra credit opportunities. She is a great teacher and funny
Took this class last year & really enjoyed it! She connects the topics with her own real-life stories. As some reviews have mentioned there is a group project which is a research paper. I really enjoyed the experience, however, be prepared to work on it all semester long as you will conduct interviews. She also offers an extra credit opportunity.
Pretty basic intro class but because of the group project I go a lower grade. Make sure people in your group are pulling their weight. Professor graded everyone down in the group because a few did not pull their weight and performed poorly. Definitely would not take a class from this professor again, not accommodating at all.
This class was super do-able over the five weeks I took during the summer. The discussions posts were 2 per week and very easy given we had the whole week to complete them. There were extra credit quizzes. Group project was easy and you will receive full credit if you follow directions. Overall,it can be taken with another class at the same time.
Professor's lectures cover the basics, but the group project can be tricky. Use Unstuckstudy for study prep - it helps organize my notes and practice with quizzes. Overall, a manageable intro course if you stay on top of the work.
It's just your typical intro class but beware, there is a group project which is weighted heavily. Professor will not take into consideration if a group member is not pulling their weight therefore lowering your grade. This lowered my grade from an A to a B+. Though grader and professor is condescending. Do not recommend.
I do not recommend this professor. Does not answer emails in a timely manner and is not accessible after class. Due to unanswered questions on my project, got a lowergrade which lowered my gpa. Class is doable except for group project.would not take from this profess again.
I took her Sociology class Fall 2024, she's a great professor. She is very passionate about her job. She's an ally and accepting of all kinds of backgrounds and people. She grades very fairly, almost liberally. It's impossible to fail her class if you take your college grades very seriously.
She is one of the worst professor I have ever had at valley college. She has different attitude towards students in class. If she doesn't like a student, she pretended she can't pronounce their name correctly for attendance. Don't waste your time in this class and with this professor. Her class is not interesting at all. You will regret taking it.
Interesting class however the majority of your grade in based on a group project. No contact with group and instructor never responded to multiple emails. Had an "A" but no way to pass the class without this project. Very disappointed because I needed this class in order to graduate this semester. Better communication would be appreciated. Avoid
Does not respond to emails in a timely matter. Because of her lack of communication regarding a group project that was worth 85 points toward grade, I had to drop the course which delayed my graduation and cost extra money. Will take the course at another school. She even admitted she messed up but at my expense. Had an A in the class. Avoid her
This class is taught by a very opinionated professor who is rude to those who don't agree with her. Not available during office hours. Has some interesting lectures but her tests are based mostly on terms. Disappointed in this soc class. Think twice before choosing this class and prof.
Grade earned was with absolutely no help from the instructor. Emails: IGNORED! Not available for office hours. Zero support. AVOID HER!!!!
Participation matters a lot in this class but if you don't agree with this professors outdated ideas, good luck. I'd say agree with her. Also, beware of the group project as it's heavily weighted. Know the terms and get your work in on time. Very disappointed in this class as a whole. Do not recommend.
Don't recommend taking from this professor. Very biased in her teaching, grade heavily based on group project, emails not answered, and very difficult to visit during office hours. Some good lectures although a bit dated.
Lots of reading. There is a group project so hopefully you get partnered with good students. She gives feedback in the assignments.
