Having Dr.Sextro for West and World was a very unfortunate event. She was unclear, quirky, disorganized, and very difficult to work with. When going to her office hours for help on the 2 papers, she was extremely unhelpful. She showed up late to almost every class, never appeared to have a lesson plan, and was always distracted. Always flustered.
She is nice, but very difficult if you are used to any sort of structure at all. Virtually no lesson plan. If you get her and don't drop, READ. The whole class is based off of it. Participation is huge too!
She is a very disorganized teacher. She never has a lesson plan set for class and she always seems unprepared for class. Her class is very difficult to understand and she is very unclear with what she wants.
Yeah, she's ok I guess, she's just very disorganized. Has very low points to her class but you HAVE to participate otherwise you won't get a good grade.
She is very disorganized. Her class has no structure. Her study guides are extremely long so they are of no help. Her grading is tough. She takes off points, but doesn't say why she did. Midterm, Final, 2 papers and participation are your grade. Avoid at all cost!
Terrible
Class consists of going over 40 pages of reading homework, being bombarded by random facts from a disorganized power point and a class discussion which the class steers any direction they want. Disorganized is an understatement. No matter how you feel about history or having a difficult prof, DROP HER CLASS IMMEDIATELY!
Worst teacher I've had in college. She's always very disorganized, comes in late every class, and grades extremely critical.
So it seems every one said enough... But here is the deal. If you put the effort in you will be fine! Go to her office hours and she will basically tell you how to get an A on any assignment. Read what she tells you to read. Not that confusing.
Dr. Sextro is a nice lady but just not fit to be a teacher. Her class really does not have much structure, making difficult to follow most of the time, esp for people who don't love history. She has good intentions but I DEFIANTLY do not recommend her.
If you love being showered with homework and like to do irrelevant and tedious tasks involving reading and making charts, this is definitely the teacher for you.
This teacher is great in class but there is so much homework. I am an engineering major who didn't have time to read a whole chapter and 4 articles every week just to be asked 5 multiple choice questions. She is really good at explaining the material but there is just so much work that you have to do every week. Do not take her.
only take her class under two condition: 1-this is the only course left for you to graduate.2- your gpa is high enough that 3 credit course with bad grade wont affect that much. she knew that history is boring and she makes it even more boring. she asks questions and if nobody answers she revenge by dividing students into groups to discuss.
She is extremely passionate about history and it shows. Her assigned readings were way too long, I didn't do them but I did take notes on what we discussed in class and it got me by. I went to her office hours and established a pretty solid relationship with her and I think it helped me out in the end. She is very helpful when you ask for help
She seemed to be very knowledgeable ,but she was boring and was hard grader and her quizzes. She gave us a study review for final and midterm and it was very long especially the terms they were around 46 and you will only get 4 to 6 out of these. She has 9 tough quizzes (lowest quiz dropped) ,final, research paper and homework
She is very insightful and provides great class room discussions.
I genuinely enjoyed her class. Yes, her tests are difficult, but if you listen to her during lectures it's pretty easy to spot what that test will cover and what it won't. She was extremely nice, and she's willing to help you if you ask for it. Honestly, if you put effort into her class you'll de well.
She is very confusing when it comes to lectures and is pretty all over the place. She also doesn't put much in the grade book which can be bad or good.
While a very nice lady, I found Professor Sextro a very hard teacher to follow. Her lectures were all over the place and she seemed very disorganized. Two things I found annoying was that we had to print out an average of 10 pages to bring to class each day and she never posted any grades in isidore for the entire semester.
She is very vague. She never put a grade on anything, she uses checks, check minus or check plus. This really bothered me since she didn't put anything in the grade book so you never knew your current grade and couldn't calculate it based on the check system. I emailed her several times over the semester and it took her several days to respond.
Dr. Sextro is a very kind professor. She really cares about her students doing well and making the most out of their college experiences. You need to go to class to understand what's important. She gives you excellent study guides before the exams. Two midterms and a final, all essay tests, as well as three other essays and 2 WWR events. Reccomend!
Laura is definitely kind, almost to a fault. She is passionate about cultural history and wants to share it with her students. I have never like studying history's , dates, and big events. She provides this in a cultural context that I have found keeps my attention and makes it interesting.
Terrible do not take this course
Her lectures are long and confusing. She jumps all over the place and expects too much out of her students. She is very knowledgeable but is just not cut out for teaching. Tests are hard because she never really explains things in class.
Not the absolute worst class I have ever taken, but if you have an option, avoid her as your first choice (maybe 3rd). Her lectures are extremely scattered and she always writes random words on the board when she talks that we don't even elaborate on. If you have friends in the class it makes it better. You also have to go to her to see your grade.
TAKE THIS COURSE, you'll be a better student. Dr. Sextro is amazing. Would take again if she taught more courses. Class is run like a graduate course. If you read the material (which is interesting) you will do great in this course. She has always been helpful and treats her students like colleagues and adults. If you need help make sure you ask!
This class is difficult but not horrible. Professor Sextro is very passionate about the material which makes you want to work harder. The lectures are long but have a lot of good material in them. She wants to see you succeed but will make you work for it.
She is all over the place during lectures, she never makes sense and then gives quizzes on things we haven't gone over. Over 20 pages of reading due per class. She is rude when you ask questions and gets mad when you do not know something. Awful teacher do not take her, she does not care if people succeed.
Great teacher, always there if you need help and always wants her students to succeed. Though her lectures are long, she finds ways to make them very engaging and entertaining.
While at first she seems really tough, she is VERY knowledgeable about her subject and is willing to help if you ask. She is definitely a scholar, but not necessarily a teacher. If you do the readings (there are a lot but they're interesting) and at least try in class, she will love you and you will do very well.
The class was interesting, although the subject matter was not light. She gives good lectures, but take notes, because she won't post the slides for future reference. Reading intensive, she had at least 10 pages per class, but they were interesting. We had 2 papers and 2 quizzes, a midterm and a final, and one group project. 7/10 would take again.
Never put in grades so many went into the final blind not knowing where they were in the class. Our grade is determined by two tests, a paper, and a few quizzes. Very bad at communication and unprepared. Do not take her.
Dr Sextro was an awesome professor. She is extremely passionate about the course content and is very knowledgeable. When I contributed to class additional historical content relating to class material she always knew what I was talking about. She is very reasonable on the classwork and extremely kind. Would love to take another course by her.
Half a chapter (chapters are about 50 pages each) due each class plus many primary sources.
very monotonous. expects this class to be your first priority.
no notes given and have to understand all the sourses given and the book and how they relate
If you take her, get ready to read!! She expects you to read a ton of material from the book, outside sources, and take your own notes; she also acts as if her class should be your first and only priority. Although she is very intelligent and passionate about what she teaches, it is hard to keep up with her and all the material she throws at you.
Drop the class. Don't look back you can take a better teacher, she is the worst. She thinks this is the only class you are taking. Zero chill. My roommate a hard a different professor and got an easy A. I had to put hours in just for a B-. If you take her good luck :)
Didn't know what my grade was until after the final exam (and when I asked how to find out what it was, I didn't get a clear answer) which made it very difficult to stay motivated throughout the semester. Nice lady and not that hard of a grader, but TOO MUCH reading.
Dr. Sextro was a nice person, but I did not like her as a professor. There was an almost overwhelming amount of reading each week as if she forgot we had other classes. Lectures were also often disorganized. She did give a good study guide for the midterm/final but it was a lot of information. The class didn't include too many graded materials
I loved Dr. Sextro's class. There is a lot of reading, especially of additional sources, but Dr. Sextro is extremely passionate about history and makes discussion about historical themes engaging. She is extremely kind and very knowledgeable. The exams are difficult, but the study guides are transparent and helpful.
Absolutely awful. She assigned over 100 pages of reading each week plus all the outside sources you have to print and read. It's ridiculous because she doesn't even go over the stuff in class, her lectures are way off topic and when you go to her for help outside of class, it's all the same stuff. I dropped halfway in.
She is a nice woman and definitely knows her stuff, however the readings are confusing and she doesn't explain them during class time. If you want to pass her tests and quizzes, you'll need to spend a lot of time studying and reading. Hard class to keep up with.
I wish I dropped when I had the chance. A ton of reading as if I didn't have any other homework. There are not many opportunities to receive grades. Attendance is mandatory but her lessons lack structure and consist of her adding "ography" and "ically" to the end of every word possible. Sometimes I google the words because I swear they don't exist
She is very annoying. You will have a ton of reading (she believes very strongly in 3 hours at least of homework for every class you have). She goes through material very quickly so it is often hard to get a grasp on everything. Gets annoyed easily. Get on her good side. She curved really hard my semester which helped boost the grade slightly.
Her grading is very unorganized, I never knew what my grade was. Lecture heavy, very boring. She can be kind of mean and not understanding of life outside of class. Lots of reading, sometimes took me 3+ a night for her homework. Nice lady outside of class but in class very rude (especially when you don't understand material)
This is actually the worst class I have ever had to take. She believes students should spend MANY hours on this class each night and the homework consists of reading the textbook and books. The class itself is SO boring, VERY lecture heavy and she hardly puts notes on her powerpoint so you have to tune in to every detail she says, DONT TAKE HER!
Firstly, she had a good attitude, gave us food (candy/desserts), and changed a few deadlines when she could tell we needed time. But, she also never told us our current grade, took forever to get things back to us, changed her slideshows too fast, and assigned an extreme amount of reading for each week. I did like that her syllabus was week by week
Dr. Sextro is very nice, but not a good teacher. Her PowerPoints are unorganized and she doesn't post them for reference after class. I spent 10+ hrs/wk on reading outside of class. Go to her office hours and she will help you. Get on her good side. I learned a lot of history that I don't really care about or need to know. Good luck!
Honestly the most painful teacher I have ever dealt with. She believes at least 3 hours of hw should be done every night, her class is boring with constant disorganized powerpoints, her mid terms require way too much studying, and her attitude just sucks. You could ask a question as politely as possible and no answer. Just attitude. Do NOT TAKE!
Dr. Sextro requires a lot of reading but is able to explain the information in a way that everyone can understand. She makes the class rigorous but she can be flexible. She has very good intentions. Very professional. Has a good character.
Did NOT enjoy Dr. Sextros class! A TON of reading each week. Her class is very difficult & she seems to forget we have other classes. Online quizzes every other week, midterm, final, in-class assignments based on readings, 1 group project, 2 take-home written assignments. This was my least favorite class. Shes nice, but not a good prof.
I took Prof Sextros French History Class in Spring of 2015. We worked heavily with Prof Dorfs music class to give presentations on Several aspects of The French Revolution. This was one of the greatest classes I took at UD and would recommend Prof Sextro to anyone.
Dr. Sextro gets a bad rap. She is one of the most knowledgeable professors I've ever had she is a very intellectual historian. Lecture heavy you must take notes or you will fail the class. Assigns so much reading its almost hard to keep your head above water. But if you read and take notes you are guaranteed an A in the class.
Makes you work for your grade, however, and A is possible you are just going to have to work very hard and do all your work diligently.
She gives way to many reasources and asks you to understand everything. Lectures are off on tangents and do not really back up what is in the readings. Reading feels like busy work. Super nice lady outside of class just puts too much work on for a entry level history class.
Professor Sextro is a very nice teacher and very chill, but she assigns probably 5 primary sources to read each week along with around 25 pages of textbook reading. 1 quiz every week, just a lot of reading but other than that she's a good teacher and very knowledgable about what she's talking about.
She is a really great person but is not a good professor. The amount that she gives you to read each night is almost impossible. For exams, she gives you three to five "short" essay questions that at times took me two or more pages to answer a single question. The questions on quizzes came from nowhere so its almost a guessing game each week.
Dr. Sextro is incredibly knowledgeable and very respectful to students. She is also very accepting of those with accommodations. It is a very lecture heavy class and you won't be provided the slides, so make sure to take notes. Also she grades pretty tough so make sure to study. Oh also it's an INSANE amount of reading outside of class so be smart.
Show up, do the readings and youre good. Professor is so nice and amazing. Lecture heavy, hard to stay awake but its all useful.
Incredibly heavy course load for an entry level class. If I could go back in time I would have dropped within two weeks, the stress is not worth it.
Dr. Sextro is a great professor. She is very passionate about what she teaches, and never has a bad day. Students tend give her a bad rap because of the amount of reading she assigns (which is a lot), but she does so in order to help students understand the subject matter and pass the class. Her lectures are definitely worth paying attention to.
Genuinely one of the hardest and most stressful classes I have ever taken. The amount of reading in this class is ridiculous. I would recommend dropping it immediately. If it is too late or you don't want drop then I would recommend getting on her good side by being an active participant in class. Her Midterm and final were so HARD. Do NOT take her
Do not take Sextro, she assigns an insane AMOUNT of reading, her exam are nearly impossible and require so much studying, she forgot you have other classes. She is also extremely unorganized and her lectures are so hard to follow because she moves SO fast.
She is a nice person but runs class very poorly. Notes are strictly based off of what she says during class and the slides are useless. Expects us to read close to 100 pages a week and many sources on top of them. Does not give good feedback and waits until the end of the semester to grace every assignment. Also, takes attendance inconsistently.
Dr. Sextro is very nice but disorganized. She assigns an insane amount of reading and homework. She doesn't seem to take into account that students are taking other classes. Extremely lecture-heavy and participation-based. Her powerpoints are very vague and useless, so being attentive in class is a must. She is also a tough grader.
She is very nice and accommodating but not the best professor. She takes forever to grade things and around 50% of my grade was undetermined until the very last minute. Very lecture heavy class.
Dr. Sextro is a great person and definitely cares about her students, but she assigns a crazy amount of homework and is tough grader and takes awhile to put in grades. The class often got very boring because of her lecturing it is every class the whole class. You also aren't allowed to have any technology out during class also.
History 103 was my hardest class this semester. Dr. Sextro likes to assign lots of reading (100 pages a week) that she will then call on specific students to answer questions on in class. She also comes across as an unorganized and clumsy person. She is very nice and knowledgeable, but does not help students to connect with the material.
She never gives a 100% on any assignment--at all.
I think the other review on here are a little harsh! She is sweet and understanding if you pay attention and do your work. She does assign A LOT of reading, but after the first few weeks of struggling it becomes easier. Her exams were hard, but not impossible if you study. Overall, I ended with a fine grade and lots more knowledge abut history.
Yes, I do think this class was hard but as long as you do the readings and follow along in class the quizzes and reflections/papers are easy. Her lectures are often boring, but she does post the slides online which is very helpful. You can tell she cares about her students but she doesn't always know how to help you succeed.
Dr. Sextro is a good person and is really understanding with her students. She never makes you feel like you're ever wrong. She is very lecture heavy and ask for you to read a lot but as long as you read some of what ur told you will be okay in her class. If you're not interested in history that much idk that her class is for you.
She inspired me to switch my major to history. She's an easy grader and would definitely would recommend taking west & the world to nonhistory majors.
At first, Dr. Sextro's workload seemed unmanageable, but after a few weeks, the reading became better. We have a 30 page chapter and some documents every week to read, but as long as you stay on track, it is manageable. She doesn't upload grades until the very end. Very lecture heavy.
Ok, here me out. She gives a lot of reading, but you simply do not have to do it and you will pass the class anyways. You can google all the quizzes and they are all take home quizzes. The only tests she gives are the midterm and the final. And you only have one paper which is just answering 5 questions with one paragraph each. Her class = joke
Professor Sextro is VERY lecture heavy. She does powerpoints everyday, however they only contain the vocab and important dates, not definitions or context behind these terms. It is very hard to stay awake because she rambles and lectures the whole time. NO COMPUTERS OR PHONES ALLOWED. She is a very nice lady. Uses blue book for midterm and final.
Dr. Sextro is very passionate about what she teaches, which I respect greatly. The major problem is that she takes an entry level history class too seriously. The amount of reading she gives a week is not optimal. The most irritating thing is that when I do read said 30 pages before class, we do not even go over it because we are behind.
She is an awful teacher. I have accommodations due to my mental health and she was so rude about it. I never knew what was going on in her class. She never cared if you emailed her or asked her a question in person, he has the " not my problem" attitude. AS IF WE ARENT HER STUDENTS? If you get stuck with her i wish you the best of luck.
Dr. Sextro is knowledgable and approachable, and if you participate or make an effort asking questions she will like you. There is a lot of reading and notes, but most of it is not necessary. There are take home quizzes, a midterm, and a final exam. She lectures every class and doesn't allow computers to be out. I thought she was very manageable.
Dr. Sextro is very knowledgeable in history but she uses this to make the class hard for everyone. The class is lots of work every week that she wants you to do before class and you won't even go over the information in that class. She makes you hate the class and never want to take history again honestly. Please don't take her
Professor Sextro's class is one of the more difficult classes I've taken at UD. There is reading assigned for every class (at least 15 pages) and you should probably read them since she basically has you memorize everything for the midterm and final exam. She puts grades in at the last minute and acts like this is the only class you have.
Dr. Sextro assigns a ton of readings that are unnecessary for you to read. She also does not grade anything, even after the semester was over I still don't know what I got on the final exam and one of the papers earlier in the semester. I would not recommend Sextro as the class is boring and tedious, but if it is the only class left you'll be fine.
I would not recommend taking Dr. Sextro's class. There were hundreds of pages of reading due per week, with handwritten notes, which were talked about in a vague PowerPoint in class. For the midterm and final exams, she basically told us that we don't need to memorize everything but we should know everything, and she wasn't very understanding.
She is controlling, cant even let you use the bathroom. Pre/post WWI and WWII is a fascinating era and she dumbs it down to feminism, colonialism, hardly good or vital. The class is clouded by her focus. No time spent on warfare/tactics for WARS, but spent a ridiculous amount of time talking about the flu in 1917. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS HST 314!!!!
She can be funny but she is seriously a terrible professor and can sometimes be rude. We took the first quiz a month ago and it is still not graded and there isn't even a gradebook tab on Isidore. Assigns 50+ pages a week to read. Lectures are boring and class feels 5 hours long. Definitely would not recommend taking her classes.
Sextro is a wise woman and I know she could be great at teaching this class if it was more organized. She puts slides up every class with little information on them and expects you to write down everything she is saying and she rarely repeats it. She took months to grade our first quiz and we haven't gotten our first essays back from months ago.
She was overall a terrible teacher. She would assign us 100 pages of reading every class. Then she would lecture every class and call on students randomly for a grade. I would not recommend taking this class unless you want to be stressed the entire semester. I would say my classmates could agree with this statement as well.
Immense amount of reading that is not possible. Not a tough grader, but you must put in a decent effort to recieve a solid grade. One plus is that there is not a mid term or a final.
SHE IS TERRIBLE!! She will assign at least 3 hours of reading a night and expects students to fully understand the topic, her lectures aren't helpful. She is also usually very behind in lectures so on Monday you'll be in a lecture about what you read the past Wednesday but you'll have reading quizzes so you still have to keep up w/ readings
DO NOT TAKE HER, she made us read 40 pages a night and write a paper response on the text that was 2-4 pages. Her lectures were so boring and useless to the topic. She has very low self-esteem
