New psych teacher, absolutely LOVE her class! Super friendly and interesting, easy to talk to and lenient if you talk to her. Fast-paced lectures so make sure to take notes, her slides are posted and super helpful but the quizzes will have stuff she only said in class. Assignments are easy, weekly extra credit opportunities. Study for quizzes!
Dr. Shanahan is incredibly sweet and understanding and has high expectations for her students. If you study actively then you'll succeed on her quizzes and writing assignments.
Professor Shanahan was very nice and her lectures were interesting. She was new to Rhodes but I think she is doing an amazing job. I only took this class because I needed it for medical school but it was definitely one of my favorite classes I've taken at Rhodes so far. I highly recommend.
Professor Shanahan is an amazing professor. The topics are difficult but I never felt like it was her fault that I did not do as well on certain quizzes. She was extremely helpful when I went to her study hours and truly does care about her students. Her lectures are engaging and fun to listen to.Highly recommend taking her for any class.
Great professor
Dr. Shanahan is an excellent teacher who is passionate about what she teaches. Although some of the material taught was difficult, I still felt that the way she taught it improved my understanding. I really enjoyed the class and her lectures.
Dr. Shanahan is an excellent professor. She is very organized and her lectures are very engaging and interesting. She does a great job at explaining all the material in class in a way that is easy to understand. She definitely made Psychology more interesting for me. Would 100% recommend taking her class. She is also a nice person outside class.
Shanahan is good! She teaches fast-paced, so it can be difficult to keep up with her sometimes. However, she's good about answering Qs, being available outside of class, & is very open to constructive feedback. Expect a lot of time-consuming work, but nothing impossible. Overall, she's a strong prof. that I'd def recommend if you're ready to work!
Definitely would recommend taking her class for Intro to Psych. All of her lectures are pretty straightforward and if you miss a day you can just review the slides yourself. The tests are fairly easy and only pertain to the information stated in class and not the textbook. Her only con is that she assigns a lot of work that is sometimes busy work.
Dr. Shanahan was a very good professor. She was very clear about what she will quiz and here powerpoints have basically everything you need to know for the quizzes. Additionally, she had many extra credit opportunities to raise your grade.
Professor Shanahan does a wonderful job introducing psychology. Her lectures are very detailed and organized, so they're great study tools. Pay attention because she can ask about anything on quizzes. I appreciated taking quizzes and having one cumulative exam. She is a tough grader but is open to help and provide extra credit assignments.
Definitely recommend taking this course Dr. Shanahan does a great job of making it very clear and organized reminding us of upcoming deadlines every week. Quizzes can be pretty difficult but everything you need to know is on the powerpoints and extra credit is always offered.
Great teacher great energy, is extremely clear with what she expects from the class. Also is very flexible when you come to her with issues.
Not really the professors fault but there is a lot of content giving in a short period of time.
What makes her a great professor is how clear-cut her lectures and objectives are. Her notes/ppts are easily accessible and useful, and she is always available for outside help. Although the class has a little bit more work, she gives work (including bonus credit) far ahead of time; this allows students to efficiently manage their schedule.
Great teacher with many extra credit opportunities
Professor Shanahan is very nice, caring and is easy to reach. There is a good amount of work, but it is very manageable.
She is a good professor and really cares about her students. If you turn work in late she will take 50% off the grade that you would have gotten, so that really brings your grade down, but you can ask for an extension anytime before the deadline and the late penalty doesn't count. No tests, only quizzes and lecture heavy, but ?s come from lectures
Professor Shanahan is a great professor. She does assigns a lot of work, but if you read through the assignments they can be done in a matter of 30 minutes or so. She is constantly giving opportunities for extra credit. She's a tough grader, but with that comes great feedback. She is very understanding and easily accomodates. Take her if you can.
Great professor with a lot of extra credit opportunities
Very good professor, be prepared to study lectures for quizzes
Be prepared to study lectures for quizzes, but material is not that hard
Shanahan gives a decent amount of work but allows ample time to complete it. There's a big final project at the end but she goes into detail about what is expected.
Great professor for PSYC 150. She made the material very simple and easy to understand. There was somewhat a lot of assignments but they were easy and didn't take much time at all. Quizzes are pretty simple if you study for them. She also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
I really enjoyed her class! Very clear grading and gives a lot of chances to bring your grade up. Beware that turning things in late will result in a 50 percent deduction, but overall great class and she explains things very clearly.
I would definitely recommend Dr. Shanahan's class! She goes over everything well in class and during the lectures. A lot of the class is based on group work, but she gives you time to meet with them outside of class.
I loved Dr.Shanahan's course! She is very kind and breaks down concepts so you can understand them easily. She incorporates real-life examples for harder concepts and has a lot of extra credit opportunities. Make sure to reach out to her in advance if you anticipate not meeting a deadline. If you study on a regular basis, you will be fine.
Professor Shanahan goes into detail about what she expects from students and always reminds students of upcoming deadlines. Her quizzes can go into detail sometimes and seem overwhelming, but you will be fine if you take notes and study. She is very friendly and makes the course fun and interactive. I recommend taking her.
Great professor and course! Definitely recommend to Neuro majors.
Great course and professor! She was really helpful during office hours!
Dr. Shanahan is very kind and understanding. There was a lot of reading. If you're struggling, just ask for help, she genuinely wants to help. It's definitely a class that you should be make sure to show that you're thinking critically and genuinely participating. Pay attention to rubrics, she grades very particularly.
Dr. Shanahan is very knowledgeable, passionate, and kind. There are no exams, just a lot of reading articles and presenting. She is very accommodating and her course isn't hard as long as you put in the work.
Pros: encourages students to solve problems together. Cons: does not create study guides and does not provide information on what slides to focus on.
Totally honest review: she is a great professor and the class is pretty easy. The quizzes are over specific content, so you need to study, but it's mostly memorization and really isn't that hard. Lots of group work assignments. She offers bonus credit assignments, but they can be a lot of work for only a little credit. Super interesting class.
Professor Shanahan is an amazing lecturer and provides good outlines for all depth assignments but grades them harshly. She is well versed in her field and it show through her extremely detail oriented grading.
Dr. Shanahan is so cool! She tests her students in multiple ways, with group projects and tests over the material. The extra credit assignments are not too hard so its easily more points. Great teacher overall.
Dr. Shanahan holds a very engaging class. However, she grades very harshly and is very particular. She does not grade things quickly, so she will bulk grade at once and your grade will go from an B to a C- randomly at the end of the semester. For her neuro class, she offers virtually no extra credit.
Sleep neuro was an amazing class. It was super interesting and the format of the class really helped develop me as a student. This is a challenging class, but you will do well if you put in sufficient effort. The only complaint I have is the grading process, as Dr. Shanahan grades in bulk late, so you cannot keep track of how well you are doing.
Dr. Shanahan is an amazing person and as a professor you can really see her knowledge on the subject at hand is vast. I had her for Neur 344 which was a challenging class filled with lots of readings, study proposals, and presentations but was filled with very interesting topics! Keep in mind that the lab for this class involves coding as well.
I would never take this professor ever again. She is the biggest stickler for grades and doesn't want to accommodate for anything, no matter the situation. Takes away points for no good reason on her quizzes and gives out unfair grades. RUN AWAY WHILE YOU CAN
Dr. Shanahan is a great professor and is very accommodating. She will move many deadlines if you notify her in advance. She also gives out lots of opportunities for extra credit. One thing to note is that she is a tough grader. Other than that I highly recommend her!
She's very organized and structured, very clear about grading and what's expected. Her lectures are clear and the assignments are pretty easy if you follow the rubric. She has many assignments and multiple quizzes so there are many chances to raise your grade, as well as opportunities for bonus. She's also very kind and willing to answer questions
Dr. Shanahan is a good professor who clearly cares about her subject matter and her students. However, I found the classes not very engaging because of the strictly lecture style of teaching.
Great professor, flexible with office hours. I recommend
This was a really great class but does require a lot of time outside of class for daily assignments! Highly recommend as a senior seminar professor. She is very kind, encouraging, and understanding towards students.
Great professor to take for neuro senior sem! Liked that she gave meaningful feedback on assignments/presentations that were easy to understand and she'll work with us outside of class to correct those mistakes!
Class was not bad but required more effort than I had anticipated. She takes a long time to grade assignments. If I had to take it again, she would not be my first choice but like a backup probably. Best thing was that attendance does not matter and lectures are posted online.
feel like I genuinely grew and learned a lot in Shanahan's lab; Shanahan does a very good job of giving you just enough of a hint to get you to figure it out without leading you to the answer, which I personally found really valuable. I genuinely think what I learned in the lab is extremely applicable for any future research endeavors I may have.
Professor Shanahan is a very understanding teacher. Quizzes can sometimes be a little picky, but just expect a lot of weekly homework in this class, as there are many assignments. Groupwork is also huge.
Quizzes are pretty difficult and you have to be able to connect the topics learned in lecture to different things found on the tests that at times you feel like you never learned. If you study, you will be fine.
Her lectures were engaging with the students, a lot of group work. Grades hard but gives extra credit. She is very helpful and understanding
The professor is kind and helpful. She is a straightforward grader, and you will do a lot of group work. Her quizzes are somewhat challenging but manageable. There are no textbooks, only slides. She is also available for office hours.
Shanahan is a great teacher and makes her expectations for the class very clear. She is a tough grader but makes it easy to study for her tests and quizzes. She is very easily accesible outside of class and her office hours are very helpful. She cares about all of her students.
Dr. Shanahan is the sweetest lady ever! She is a professor who truly cares about her students succeeding, as she offers bonus points wherever she can and gives extra credit every week. This class isn't hard and her lecture style definetely makes it easier.
Dr. Shanahan is a great teacher and professor. She truly wants to see you succeed, and she is always willing to help. She gives so much opportunity for extra credit which balances the difficulty of the class. She is definitely more difficult than other Psychology professors, but if you're going into a field of study that is based in Psych, take her
She was great and always open to meet. Some of the Grading is vague and her "bonus credit" wont affect your grade whatsoever, good class though.
Dr. Shanahan is amazing! She truly cares about her students and she is a great lecturer. I have learned so much from her course and I am now a psychology minor because she's just that awesome. Take her course if you get a chance!
I think Dr. Shanahan is a really nice person and loves what she is doing. She gives good feedback and helps you understand the material. The only issue I had was that she made this class way harder then it should have been. There is a good amount of work and unless you are majoring in psych or doing pre-med, I would fade or go to another teacher.
Professor Shanahan gives very detailed lectures that cover everything on the tests and quizzes, although sometimes it may be hard to understand. She is very easy to set up meetings with and is very helpful. Vocab is very important
Professor Shanahan is a great professor who cares a lot about her students. You can always stay after class or swing by office hours for extra help/feedback. Her lectures are well-prepared and her attitude is always positive. There are lots of extra credit oppurtunities. She truly wishes the best for her students, I would definitely take her again.
She lectures the whole class and makes the topics more confusing, but she is a very nice person and you can talk to her.
Great teacher, Although Grading/Instructions are somewhat vague sometimes. Also the "bonus credit" doesnt do essentially anything for your grade.
Prof Shanahan is very passionate in what she teaches and very caring. Lots of office hours and extra feedback. I loved her well-prepared lectures. I would take her again for sure!
Loved having her! She's super caring and really enthusiastic about what she teaches. Quizzes are pretty average in difficulty, nothing crazy. As long as you review the material, you'll be totally fine. Overall a really good prof and easy to talk to. Definitely recommend
She's a really good professor and clearly cares about the content she is teaching. But the class is a lot harder than a typical intro level course and requires actual effort.
Great person overall. She always wanted to help her students get better and really is a great person in the classroom and outside of class. Although her type of grading and homework workload isn't worth it if you aren't even looking to major in psychology. So if you aren't looking to major in it I wouldn't recommend. If you are go right ahead.
She provides a lot of opportunity for extra credit which can be helpful. However, the main thing that threw me off-guard was that group activities were worth 29% of your grade (a lot more than the actual quizzes that are structured like tests). If you do take this class, be prepared to study a lot because her quizzes are tricky.
Class is not lecture-based, it is almost only student presentation based. You will have to read a research paper before every class so don't take it if you don't want to read.
Dr. Shanahan's Neuro of Sleep was a very unique topic. A lot of the content and skills covered are completely new. Even though almost all students were unfamiliar with the content, the ways that she taught the new content was always approachable yet led to deep understandings of the content.
Dr. Shanahan's NEURO 344 class is awesome and you should take it. It helped with my presentation skills, discussion skills, and MATLAB skills. The course was demanding but not overbearing. DO IT, TAKE HER CLASS
She's really easygoing, very nice, and approachable. The class is mainly discussion-based, but she's a harder grader than you'd anticipate, so be on the lookout for that. There are some extra credit opportunities here and there, but don't expect them to raise your grade by much. Still, really enjoyed the class, and I'd most likely recommend her!
This was a great class for an upper-level neuroscience credit that was different from the other upper-level neuro classes I have taken. It is super rooted in literature so make sure you read every day, but she makes class expectations very clear. No exams, just unit quizzes! Be prepared to participate every class and engage with the material.
I love Dr. Shanahan, her class can be a bit scary at first since its a discussion based class but once you get the hang of it, it starts being really fun. The topics are so engaging and there are no exams just many quizzes. There is a group presentation and an individual presentation, but those too are not that difficult and she is very accessible.
So much novel information about various aspects of sleep. This learning is mainly done through the reading of multiple scientific papers on the topics. Almost every day, there is a mini quiz to ensure reading and a student/group presents the article of the day. Very chill class. Lab is mainly learning and applying MATLAB, but she helps so much.
This teacher was amazing and understanding. She never made the class feel a bore, and challenged you in all the right ways. I learned about presentations and critical thinking. I would take again, especially for a depth
TAKE NEURO OF SLEEP!!! One of the coolest classes I've ever taken. You learn so much because the content is applicable to your own life, so it is fun to learn! She doesn't give exams for this class, just unit quizzes which are straightforward! Participation, good presentations, and doing the readings before class will get you an A in the class!
Tough grader but wants you to do well in class and is super kind and approachable!
Overall, this class isn't bad. Its mostly discussion based, and youll have to read a lot of journal articles, but they aren't too bad. The lab component is a little tough because it is coding based and she kind of throws you in the deep end, but as long as you keep up with the skills you learn you should be fine. She is a picky grader though
take this class
She's very kind and approachable, and truly cares about her students. Psych 150 is lecture-heavy, but she explains the material well and creates a comfortable environment for questions. Her wording can be complex, but she's accessible after class. She's a tough but fair grader and is willing to explain or adjust if something seems unclear.
Be sure to read and participate in class discussions, asking questions in lab and practicing coding really matters
Intro to Psychology with Professor Shanahan was challenging but rewarding when it came to learning. She gave lots of case studies and assignments, but also a lot of extra credit which was very helpful.
She was very good at explaining things when there was confusion, went through quizzes with you if you needed and even helped how to study for the quizzes. She knew the material she was teaching and the assignments that were due were never too bad. Def had to put in a lot of work to study for the quizzes but overall 10/10 professor!
Dr. Shanahan's seminar-style course is engaging and informative. Units begin with her lecture, then peer presentations. Quizzes are clear, but sometimes graded picky. The coding-based lab can be tough with limited practice, but overall, the class builds strong skills in analyzing articles, interpreting data, and proposing research ideas.
Dr. Shanahan is an excellent professor. She clearly knows what she is doing, but her exams can be really hard sometimes, and she is a tough grader, but she is fair. She cares about her students and genuinely wants them to succeed.
Professor Shanahan is a good professor. She is lecture heavy so you have to pay attention in class; however she is pretty much always available to meet with her outside of class which is fantastic. If you are up for a good challenge take her, you will learn so much.
She's a great at explaining but is particular with her quizzes. Be prepared to study!
