She teaches ELI online courses and is the hardest teacher I have ever had. I cant get anything past an F on assignments. The class average for all the assignments is a "D". If you just see her picture you will run away.
No way! I DEFINITELY don't recommend taking this class with her in ELI. There is way too much work...her blackboard site is filled with so many assignments that it gets so confusing to navigate. She never answered my emails. Not recommended for people unfamiliar with ELI. People barely passed.

This was an easy class if you just studied and did the work. No prob at all, and she is nice about making up work. Def. recommend this teacher for good students.
I took western religions with her through ELI. It was a pretty easy class. She was easy to contact and would respond promptly to any questions. She was flexible with assignments. She seemed to be really interested in making sure everyone was exposed to something new and enjoyed themselves.
I think she tries to do too much with too little time. It can be confusing. Shows lots of videos, so if you like that, this is the class for you. Grades really tough.Tons of reading. Acts like it's you're only class. Never discusses readings. Just a bad experience all together. Class started with 20 people, at end of semester only 6
The above comment is right on with my experience. Grades papers extremely hard and doesn't provide any feedback about what she wants on tests or papers.....you just find out after you get a C. Really ****ing irritating and boring......also, it feels more like a church seminary class than educational...she is a fruit and boring as hell!
Nice class. I learned a lot, and the assignments were easy. She is good with late work and is very helpful if you have any questions.
she sucks! the workload amount was unrealistic and confusing. the class was full on the first day of the semester but by the last day, there were only 6 people.
I found that Prof. Shulman does assign a lot of work, compared to other ELI courses I have taken. However, everything she expects is clearly defined, and she gives nearly unlimited opportunity for extra credit. I found most problems I had with the computer portions of the course, were a problem with NOVA's system, not Shulman's course.
I took the class via ELI, the assignments were easy. The projects were fun. She needs to update the webpage for the class, its not 2004 anymore. I did very little for the class and got a decent grade.
Teach one thing, test on a hundred OTHER things. The tests will blindside you with pointless trivia-style questions and terms. Might want to learn the world languages before trying the religions with this teacher... AVOID!
She is not as easy as I thought, very straight on time. Heavy penalty on late work
This may be a religion class, but she does not want to hear about your religion. In our first assignment she wanted to know about our thoughts on religion, but apparently she didn't agree with my beliefs so she knocked me down some points. Ridiculous. Take someone else. She's just impossible to work with. I ended up very frustrated with her.
BELIEVE ME, aviod this professor at ALL COSTS!!!!! The class is redicilous and so is she. She doesn't want to hear anything you have to say. Many other reasons also... Just STAY AWAY!!!!!!!
I really enjoyed this class. There are a lot of papers to write and several exams but there is an opportunity for extra credit. I got an A but the course is not easy and requires quite a bit of work. The exams are difficult. Professor Shulman is very helpful and I would take another course from her. I learned a lot.
Assignment: Religious Scavenger Hunt is a total joke. I'm taking Eastern Religions but yet I have to count places of worship for 27 different religions. Only 5 are the list are Eastern. You're being graded on how well you know the area and how well you know google maps. She's a tough grader. Why should something like this effect my grades? BS
You know how some teachers seem to care? You can tell how they want you to get an A in their class, they want to help you, and they do what they can to push you up; you know those teachers? She's is not one of them. You can't possibly work as hard as she has in life. It's a safe bet you're gonna get a B with hard work when you're deserving of an A.
Wow, I just dropped this class in time so I could get my tuition back. I dropped after I saw her syllabus. Talk about nuts. I want to learn religion. I'm not joining a monastery where I will be living it 24/7. Required 9 hours of work per week (online class) It will take 9 hours just to read text never mind other class assigns. & studying.
All I can say is don't take her. She spends the entire class going over a handout she gives out and showing us her webpage. Then the last 15 minutes she rushes through the REAL notes and time drags on. Terrible professor.
I disagree with all the comments so far. I thought Professor Shulman was a great teacher. You can tell she's really passionate about the subject. The class is not an easy A though. Take it if you have a true desire to expand your mind about western religions. You'll have to study a lot but you'll come out of the class with much more knowledge.
This instructor's syllabus is confusing and contradictory in many places. She is arrogant and difficult to communicate with. She is slow to respond to requests for assistance and then, when she does she offers no help whatsoever. Avoid her like the plague.
OMG-stay away. All I can think about is that bird from that cereal I used to eat when I was younger, coo coo for coco puffs. I have never done so much work in a college class. Fall 2008 - ELI class 80 students capacity - enrollment total 18! Start of semester enrollment was close to 50. That's how many people dropped her class.
Her teaching style is extreme;y boring. All you do for this class is either watch movies for hours on end, constantly writing papers on SOMETHING or taking ridiculous tests on stuff you never really learned about. She is a sweet lady but I could never take a class of her's again. By the end of the semester we had 6 students remaining in the class.
It's a community college not Oxford. Get over yourself lady.
After one paper I wrote, she told me I told too much personal detail and needed to stick to the facts, the next paper I wrote her comments were that I stated too many facts and she wanted more personal insight. I was very confused. Although I do not agree with her confusing comments, the class is easy to follow and not too hard.
That was the worst semester of my life. I was only taking 4 classes. It felt worse then the semester when I took 6 classes. Too, too much work. Read her rebuttal. She really doesn't get it.
Worst Professor I ever had. I took this class is 2001 and I cannot believe she still teaches. STAY AWAY!
The information is interesting and I had fun learning it, but she doesnt grade well. She told me I was being to factual and not being personal enough in my papers, so then I wrote more personal and she told me I was too personal and not factual enough. hmmm.
Took via ELI. Whoa. I had to take this class bc I am from out of state and needed it as another pre-req. I have a Bachelor's going on Masters... and this class was one of the most intense classes I have ever taken!!! Got an A, but worked my bleep off for it. Good communication. Website confusing. This class is for hard working students only!
I'm shocked this professor has a mediocre rating. This professor's online behavior was unacceptable. Should you take this course with this professor expect every single credit hour to be milked and returned by thankless and detailed grading. If you took this class in fun, be prepared to submit more for a class that actual has practical world uses.
WORST teacher ever. I have been a STRAIGHT A student until now due to her class. Her expectations are ridiculous, she penalizes you for late work AND if you turn work in "too soon" ! She has a strict schedule of due dates, so it's impossible to really go at your own pace (the point of an online class?) DO NOT TAKE HER! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!!!!!!!!
I took her for an online religion class at LFCC. I went into this course thinking I'd get an A but about 1 month into it I know that won't happen. I think this woman actually believes she is God. Unless you believe at Princeton stay away from this horrid prof.
Don't recomend this Professor at all. Will read any private emails that are sent to her. Won't give your name but will read email to the class. Highly intelligent and is dedicated to her craft. Yet she will dismiss you in front of the class & is extremely rude. Better be willing to stay focused & ignore her high mighty abrasiveness.Website confusin
She is very exact and expects a lot. I had no specific problems with her but for the online class there is a lot of work - way more than any other class I took this past semester include BIO 101. Stay on top of the workload because it can get out of hand.
I hope you like to write. She's VERY talky. Watch the clock and don't be afraid to leave when it's time. loads of assignments. Not hard, but numerous. Good news: 1.Most writing assignments are no-wrong-answer. 2.assignments are easy! 3.loads of extra credit. 4.If you do the course work you can still get a B if you miss the final exam completely.
She gave me my first B in 2 years at CC. She told me I gave to many facts on my essays. Then I adjusted and she said I gave to much opinion. She asigns a scaverage hunt that seems impossible to meet the criteria. Her grading is very subjective. Overall, she takes a fun class and makes it more diffcult than it should be.
Toke the online class, there are too many things due. And they way she has the assignments written out, it makes it more confusing to keep up with. She is very picky with what she excepts are the right amounts of opinion and fact. Unlike other online courses, this course you can't finish before as she opens the assignments as weeks go.
She is by far the worst teacher you could possibly take. There are way to many assignments, i think i wrote close to 10 essays for this class. I have never put so much effort into writing a paper and i would expect a B or higher on them but she is a strict picky grader. This is not what i expected from an online class. Absolutely do not take her.
I'm surprised at the negative reviews. This was only my second online course but, Prof Shulman was a million times better than my first prof. She responded to every email I sent and I didn't find her workload heavy at all. You can pick up the material from the book, her online lecture notes, video links, etc. Midterm and final were easy-peasy.
This is the worst class I have erer taken in my life. Grading system is very poor. The teacher is very moody.this is a level 1 class and the teach expect for you to learn the termonolgy for 5 religion in a matter of weeks and the are in another language. On her test she dictate what is to be written, there are no true or false or multiple choice.
I took Professor Shulman's online course at LFCC. There was a decent amount of work involved, but not too much. Grading was fair, and she was consistent in giving helpful feedback. She is very passionate about religion and truly cares about her students. I highly recommend taking her course!
I took this intro to REL online through LFCC and found Professor Shulman to be quite interesting and her course materials help her students to expand their limited views on religion as she sure helped me. Excellent course and must work hard. The text we used was not easy to follow but I made it through with an A : )
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!! She sets you up for failure! She was a very tough grader, even when I turned in a great paper, I would get a C. She tells you to give your opinion yet leaves nasty comments when she doesn't like your opinion! I can't believe I ended up with a D when my exam average was an A!! The most unfair professor I've ever had!!!!

Very Nice Dedicated Instrutor. Lots of work. One draw-back is on essay questions if answer is not worded the way she thinks it should be you will not be given full credit. Even though you fully understand the concepts. Would take another of her classes but it is a lot of work.
Condensed online class. 1 week each for 5 religions. A 500 word essay, online exam, & participation in the online discussions. She is VERY critical of your 500 word reflection paper, if she doesn't care for your opinion, low grade & criticsim. She will take points off if the assignment is not done days before the deadline. How is that fair?
Oh my goodness...I wished I'd known about this site before I took her class. I was excited about this class until she taught it to me.Please believe the comments and don't take her class. She does not seem to care about how hard you try. The better you get, the tougher she gets. I can agree that she made this course uninteresting.
Dedicated and thoughtful, I don't think so. She is very criticial and it doesn't matter how much work you put into it, it will never be an "A" in her book. Do not take this class. It's not worth it, especially if she is teaching.
Interesting course work, but not a lot of help from the instructor. The grading is extremely subjective. You will get points deducted from papers if you display "too much prior information" about a religion. You must react to religion exactly as she does or you've apparently learned it wrong. Giving out A's is a measure of last resort for her.
NOT RECOMMENDED: This instructor grades harshly. I was graded poorly for reasons unrelated to the CONTENT of my work and was told more than once that I used too much information, which resulted in my poor grade. I find her course layout difficult as she over complicates things. Not recommended unless you are serious about majoring in religion.
Terrible class. She asks for your opinion then grades harshly if she doesn't agree with it. I took it online and it is completely unorganized! She makes the students go and visit another place of religion even if they don't feel comfortable about going. If you don't go you lose ten percent off your overall grade. Just terrible. Don't take her class
TERRIBLE Class and professor I was looking forward to this class and it turned out to be a nightmare. She is too critical this class should have been enjoyable but it wasn't. I'm so glad it's over. I passes the class but I won't take a class with her again.
Professor Shulman can definitely be a harsh grader on essays (especially if you include too much prior knowledge), but her course is very organized and straightforward, which I appreciated. Overall I'd recommend, but definitely expect to put a lot of effort into it.
DO NOT TAKE HER. The class material was pretty easy, but she is such a harsh grader, and she will not budge on things. She takes off points if you have prior knowledge on a religion, which is total crap. She also won't bump up a grade even 1 point if you're on the cusp, even if you killed yourself trying to pull a good grade in the class.
DO NOT take this class, she is so subjective with her grading if it is not "how she would have done it" and her instructions are never clear. The assignments are a waste of time and no matter how hard you try she will not give an A, even if you follow the rubric given.
The content of this course seemed a bit overwhelming at first, but Professor Shulman offers very flexible due dates as well as a plethora of resources and feedback. The resources for each exam made the testing portion of the class relatively easy. If you're not an idiot, Shulman's class shouldn't give you any trouble. Make sure you participate!
OMG this lady I can't with her. Do her assignments to the "T" please no hiccups. Don't ever assume you're doing grade A work because 9 times out of 10 you are not! There is not enough characters to describe this lady. Just to let y'all know I am taking this class again next semester.. SOUNDS FUN DOESN'T IT..... with a different teacher of course!!
I got an A in this class, but it was no easy feat. Professor Shulman is very well versed in what she does. The catch with her class is you have to follow instructions to a T, but the thing is she over explains and it ended up confusing me. She gives ample resources and study guides so test are easy, but most of your grade is based on discussion!
This teacher is really tough. I could have studied harder but I feel like she graded me based on her high expectations, even if the answers were technically right. She really wants you to grasp a very specific and personal understanding of the subject, so having a basic understanding will not likely be enough to pass the class.
A very difficult course. I would only recommend this class to those majoring in Religious Studies or those who have a lot of free time. She requires you to do an immense amount of work and memorizing, which is fine, but I would not take a class with this professor unless you are really dedicated to the study of religion. I ended up withdrawing.
Considering the fact that I did not sign up for her class in the first place, I was not pleased with the course. I signed up for a Michael Gutzler and got Shulman. No communication between teacher and student. Grading was harsh and late. We were forced to go to a place of worship not pertaining to us as a major assignment. I do not recommend.
I signed up for the class thinking that I was getting one professor, and ended up with Shulman. She was awful; she didn't respond to emails and only replied with exam dates. Harsh and unfair grader, especially on the assignment where we had to go to a place of worship other than our own. Easy quizzes & exams, awful professor. Don't take her class!
None of her lectures were her own. It was a mix of youtube videos from other professors and 30 minute videos of some random guy speaking. Although I did receive a passing grade, the class was more of a nuisance rather than a learning experience.
She is very frustrating due to the fact that she is so particular in how she desires responses to be while also being short and concise. Her questions are too open ended and she decides to reduce your points due to the fact that she wants to see more vocab words while limiting you to 200 words. If she likes you, your discussion board is good
This course requires a considerable amount of reading. After the reading assignments, there are many required writings, but they are based on your thoughts so there is no wrong or right answer. The tests are fair and if you have read the material and the information provided in the links you will do well. Professor Shulman is fair - do the work!
I took this class online, 16 weeks. It is a lot of work and readings. If you are on top of your work and deadlines, you are golden. She sends out weekly reminders about HW but sometimes forgets. She was a fair professor but a lot of work. She always had grades current & was available. I did it and I have a fulltime job and two kids so no excuse.
I don't recommend her as your teacher at all. Yes, she has lots of knowledge, however, she teaches and grades you like you're doing a masters program in Religion. On top of that, she expects you to have a certain perspective of religion or else you lose a couple of points no matter how well you work on your paper. That includes free writing -unfair
Would not recommend taking her, especially if it's an online class. Tough grader with odd/strict rules about when things have to be turned in by. Inconsistent when it comes to abiding by her own criteria and syllabus. Very subjective and almost judgmental in grading and comments/feedback. Way too much work for an 8 week course.
she's very rude and critical, a lot of home works that can be Irrelevant. though grader and will make you dislike religious discussions. please don't do this to yourself.
There is a lot of work required weekly, easy to fall behind. Shulman was a good online professor, gave amazing feedback, although it sometimes comes off as condescending when she doesn't agree with you or understand your reasoning.
The online class set up was a mess. There was no consistency for anything: rubrics, grading between similar assignments, due dates. She is passionate about her material, but in the world of online courses, passionate does not teach. I got more lost and frustrated trying to figure out the assignments than I did trying to learn the information.
If you are looking for an easy A to meet pre-req needs, this is not the class for you. I'm sure professor Shulman is very passionate about this topic but she fails to translate this passion to her students. Her online class, the lecture videos aren't even hers. She gives you links to other people's lectures. And her Bb isn't organized efficiently.
Do yourself a favor and never take a class with her. Her grading is erratic and there is no valuable feedback. You can work so hard on an assignment and its a hit or miss, you'll never know. She's terrible. My class was online and she's obviously not tech savvy enough to teach an online class. I worked waaay too hard to only get a B.
I got an A, but still realized that I had to write my work using certain viewpoints in order to get good grades. This means that you cant be honest with what you believe in. To me that is the worst trait possible for a professor to have. Do yourself a favor and never take this class.
Her method of teaching is through videos made by other people which isn't terrible but there are a lot of them each week and can get really boring. The exams can be difficult if you haven't watched these videos. Her grading criteria can be really weird too.
Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had !! very hard and focused on the smallest details while grading. Would not recommend one bit at all DO NOT TAKE HER SHE SUCKSSSSSS
Laura Shulman, she is very mean in the class never responded the email. Do not take her class she is really not honest with grade my friends told me before but, I took her class yes it was my mistake to add her class please do not feel depressing with her class she is not good at all.
Laura Shulman, she is not honest her class was full of home work and quiz but she never satisficed with the work, do not take a class with her. she is really horrible, never and ever take her class she is extremely awful in grade she is very bad in class at all.
Laura Shulman she is religion teacher but she is not honest in grade the student very though, awful don't take her class she is so bed grader.
The experience with the professor during the class was so difficult as her instructions were never clear and she was the worst grader ever. I had to work hours to try to work around what she specified. Avoid taking her by all means.
This professor was almost giving too much information for material that we had to learn. I know one must provide us with the material to be successful, but it was entirely too much. She would also not lecture much on the meetings, but overall it was a good experience for a religion course.
Whatever you do DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. she has no manners, is judgmental makes up unnecessary assignments and takes points off for no reason and makes you do group work every single class, very tough grader and is not helpful at all.
Look this class is an easy A provided you finish the homework and actually read the homework instructions. You don't need to bother watching the extra video material she posts. Just read the book, and take notes in class and you'll be totally fine. There is only one exam at the very end. It's all multiple choice so just know what the terms mean.
BRUTAL! Of all the college courses I have taken, I projected this to be my favorite. So excited. She wrecked that for me. Rude, demeaning, condescending, unfair, harsh. She EDITED a majority of the discussion board posts, critiquing most of our free thoughts and changing what was OURS...to hers. Unbelievable. Choose another Professor.
Great professor, guided and checked in on her students weekly even though it was a fast paced and all online course with no zoom meetings. She really gave great feedback to students and also participated in the discussion boards.
Extremely uptight about grading and questions students credibility and integrity without proper reason
This class is literally her whole life so make her feel that you'd sell your kidneys to be part of her class if you want an A. If you can, pick other profs. If u can't be careful how you deal with her.
The worst professor I've ever taken. The course seems very simple and it is but she makes it very difficult in her own way. The hardest and most inconsistent grader I've ever seen. Very heavy on writing. Very rude. Offers useless feedback. Don't take her if you have other options available.
Do not take this professor if you can take anyone else. Very critical of every assignment. For a class on Religion, it felt like she was not open-minded and wanted everyone to think a certain way, regardless if it may contradict their religion. Mostly discussion posts, quizzes, and an in-person encounter with a religion you are unfamiliar with.
she asks for to much for a easy course all her assighemnts require lots of writing and if you are not willing to do that she will give you a bad grade
for an easy, online class she was so harsh for no good reason. She wanted specific responses and for a religion class she was not very open minded; very strict about not including bias in assignments, but was very biased herself. gave terrible feedback and inconsistent, harsh grading. do not take this class with her as a teacher !!
She gives assignments that aren't graded, but expects you to get them done in order to turn in assignments that are graded which doesn't make sense because why are you putting my grade on the line for something that isn't being graded ?
She's biased. please don't take her, save yourself. She will give you a rubric, and you do everything the rubric says and she still finds a way to mark off points for things that's not on the rubric. I reported her twice already. don't take her.
She referred to me as neurotic, childlike and mentally ill after I responded to an opinion based question about my religion. In my answer I explained why my view was the way it is, made zero negative comments on any other religion. Just stated MY opinion as the answer to the question she was asking.
She literally stated at the beginning of the class that she intends to "change our views on religion" through the course of this class. I took this class for my humanities credit 2 years ago and she would take points off simply because she didn't agree with my opinion. DON'T TAKE HER IF YOU CAN!!!
Gave clear guidelines and examples for each major assignment. All assignments are graded, some of them are just graded in bulk as a singular item at the end of the course. Remember that the content is essentially human history, and you'll do great.
