She is amazingly helpful. she loves to have class discussions. if you ever need any help whatsoever she will be more than willing to help you whenever is convient for you. i absolutely loved taking her class and would recommend her to anyone.
she is an incredibly helpful, kind professor. anytime you need any help she is always willing to clarify, explain, and talk to you about anything. she loves having class discussions, and makes every student feel like they have a valid opinion and are able to share their thoughts. i loved her class so much.
Super sweet and helpful! She really does try to help everyone. Make sure you read the assigned reading and participate in class discussions or the class will have a pop quiz. I highly recommend her!
Ms. Sims is an overall great teacher. She truly cares about her students and helps the students out as much as possible. Class is fairly easy but writing intensive.
She is the seriously the best english teacher ever! Her class is interesting, and she is super sweet and very helpful. I highly recommend her!
MS. SIMS IS AWESOME! She's so sweet and if you ask for help, she's there for you. Her class discussions where always interesting, and you get a lot out of them. Lots of writing, but if you're confused about a prompt go to her office hours and she will make sure you do good!
Ms. Sims was by far the best professor I've had so far. She is so sweet and patient and genuinely cares for her students. Her prompts are fairly easy but you will still grow as a writer in her class. She keeps things interesting too. Definitely recommend
Mrs. Sims was by far the best professor I had this semester. She helped me understand what she wanted for each essay and the discussions were always interesting. I honestly will take something away from this class. As long as you attend class and do your work, you're most likely guaranteed an A.
4 papers throughout the semester that are the tests. Very clear in directions and the lectures are short and to the point. Goes around asking if you understand the material or need help. Highly recommend!!
SHE'S AWESOME! If you're a talkative person, she'll call out on you. Most of her assignments are online, which is great. Sometimes she'll pass out papers and lectures with Ted Talks. Very clear with her teaching methods and grading criteria, but don't slack off. Essay grading may not be so strict, but she does want you to try your hardest. EASY B+
She's a great teacher with very clear and easy assignments, but she takes a very long time to grade papers and return them.
Sims is honestly a great professor but she takes FOREVER to put in grades. I would definitely take her again. She's an easy A if you just follow her guidelines. If you want to know your grade immediately, I wouldn't suggest her.
HIGHLY recommend. An extremely easy teacher if you show up to class you will pass. 5 papers assigned through the semester with quizzes here and there. Great teacher and is always willing to help! Take her if you want to enjoy your English class!!
Easy class as long as you do the work. You get 4 absences before she takes it off your grade. I really liked her, she will help you if you need it and she is very understanding. I really recommend her.
Professor Sims is great but know that she takes a long time to return your essays/grade work (3 weeks at best) Assigns weekly readings assessments and five essays in lieu of any formal exams - She wants you to put forth an effort and is always there to help - That being said you won't get sympathy grading because she is available to help - Use her!
Do not waste your time taking this awful course. Not only is it a complete waste of your money, it is also a complete waste of your time. You will spend the semester working on three Lesson Plans, each one being turned in about two or three weeks after the last one. But, you will not receive a single grade before turning in the third lesson plan.
Great professor. Sometimes seems a little out there, but is on top of her game. Assigns quizzes weekly, but gives you great feedback. A nice, easy class that shouldn't stress you out.
There are 5 papers, 8 online quizzes, some other in class work, and then a final paper. If you do all the work then you should be fine. The only bad thing is that it takes Professor Sims a long time to get grade backs, and she seemed a little distracted this semester. Overall, I'd recommend the class.
She is a super great person! Honestly, I didn't do the readings very often, but she was still able to include everyone. Very open and overall amazing. Also, It was very irritating seeing people on their phones the whole class period.. she's cool with it.. just show some respect..
Miss Sims is a patient, kind teacher. She enjoys teaching, and she goes out of her way to help those who struggle with the class. If you do the reading, pay attention during class, take notes, and study after class, you should do fine .
Make sure you read for the quizzes. She gives out reviews for the tests, but you still gotta pay attention to the films and notes in class. Wish she would give us chances to raise our grades.
Mrs. Sims relies on class participation. She encourages group participation and usually grades those assignments very well. As long as you show up to class and participate in a group, you will get an A in those assignments. The essays were fairly easy with the highest word count essay being 1,000 words.
Ms. Sims is a wonderful professor as well as a wonderful person. She likes classroom participation and is easy going as long as your're not talking way too much or on your phone constantly. She grades pretty fairly, you just have to try. She knows when you're trying. Class attendance does affect your grade. Overall an awesome teacher
very interesting essay topics, provides insightful feedback, makes you think, reading from assigned texts is required, one of the most passionate English professors I've ever had
Professor Sims! I LOVED her class. I HATE english and she was totally cool with that. She gives wonderful feedback and makes sure all her students understand the material. She is slow on grading but she is getting better. She likes TED talks. Short readings. I LOVE HER TAKE HER IF YOU CAN.
3 test, 1 final, plenty of quizzes, lots of reading, essay about 1500 words. Fun class if you enjoy the reading, lots of group work in class.
Honestly I LOVE Laura Sims. I think she is a very caring instructor, and she is always willing to help. If you ask a question, she will gladly thoroughly answer it. This is my second class with her, and I have nothing negative to say about her.
Laura really cares about her students and the reading material. As long as you do the readings you'll get an A in the class. Make sure to attend class because she does use TopHat for quizzes at the beginning of class based off of the readings the night before. If there is ever an issue Laura is always available to talk in office hours.
Easy A, just read, She will kindve force her feminism side onto you subconciously by the 2nd half of semester but its ok, interesting stories and classes, My most enjoyable class at txstate so far thanks ms sims
My least favorite class this semester. First, you have to pay for tophat just to take quizzes through it, even though she could just give us them in class. Her lectures are boring, shoves her feminist views down your throat, and give reading responses that she grades weeks later. multiple choice part of test is easy, but short answer part is hard.
Sims as a person is a sweet lady, she really cares about what she is taking about which makes her not so bad to listen to. BUT there is weekly quizzes from the reading not hard and they help your grade a lot test are hard though you have to study and ready before every class!!
her test were very confusing based on the material we read, and the lectures are very hard to stay attentive to. its a do-able class, i just wouldn't recommend her.
This is the most unorganized class I have ever taken. Lectures were hard to pay attention to and tests were hard. I would not take this course.
Too much reading for the semester, cant cram it all. slower grader. quiz every week. reading s are hard to follow, class has nothing to do with the reading. unorganized. doesn't talk about info for test in class. BORING you have to PAY for top hat. 3 textbooks- expensive. talks about star Trak to much. group work pointless power points suck.
Sims is a really nice professor. she is passionate about her lectures but it is A LOT of reading. The readings are hard to understand sometimes because of the language used but she talks about them in class. it's a lot of information to take in especially on the cumulative final exam BUT if you read then you will have no problem with the quizzes.
there are 3 exams with short answers which include the final weekly quizzes over boring reading a one paper. there is not any extra credit. lecture is crazy boring the tests are a difficult in the sense there are select quotes from the readings. there are numerous reading you have to remember for the exams
Beware of this profesor! Many of the students did not pass this course. You will have a quiz every week over very specific aspects in your readings. There is no extra grades to boost your grade only tests, lots of hard quizzes, and a paper. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! Lectures are very boring and a majority of class days are groupwork.0
There is so much reading in this class. If you don't read before every class you will fail. It is a lot of work and if you aren't committed to this class then do not take it. The tests are pretty tough, but if you read all of the readings and understood it ALL, then you should do well. Just realize that you have to read about 40 pages every night.
Too much homework. The instructor focuses too much on a feminist view of readings, gives boring lectures, and doesn't return grades quickly.
Loved her! Super sweet & understanding of students. She is a great lecturer and she made the stories easier to understand/enjoyable. Test are multiple choice with 1 or 2 short answer but she gives a super detailed study guides that if you fill out there is no reason you shouldn't get an A. You do need the textbook!!! 2 Lowest quiz grades dropped!
She is a nice proffesor/ soft spoken. You will Multilpe choice exams with free response, a quiz EVERY week, and a paper. This is a class where you can't slack. Many people were failing, it's a hard class. Ask for help from the prof if you are concerned about your grade. The stories are hard to understand. Overall She's but not many ppl make A's
She does not require attendance, except for tests and quizzes. Her lectures always explain confusing parts of the literatures she has us read for homework. Reading due for every class. Tests are multiple choice and short answer.
Professor Sims ancient literature class was great. Attendance is not mandatory but EXTREMELY helpful if you want to get an A in her class. Certain quiz and test questions are only covered in her lecture. Tests were a combination of multiple choice and short essay sections. She creates useful study guides for the tests. She's very polite and cute.
Professor Sims has a spirit and passion for literature that made me more interested in the material. She LOVES to interact with the class by using poll daddy and even going around the room to have the class analyze the material. The class IS fun when the PEOPLE PARTICIPATE. A majority of quizzes are group quizzes which encourages classmates to talk
Lectures were interesting and interactive, starts most classes with a polldaddy quiz that is anonymous just to see if anyone read. Some quizzes are done in a group and are all pretty easy as long as you have any idea of what the current story is about. 2 exams, 1 paper, 9-10 quizzes, and a multiple choice final. Would take again.
i was hesitant to take this class because of the bad reviews, but she really is a good professor. she assigns a lot of reading but it's not impossible. she gets a lot of exam questions from lecture so be sure to go to class. she really wants you to do well and is really kind. really helpful reading guides. if you try, an a is definitely possible.
failed the first time I took her. very boring if English is not your major. wayyyyyy to much work for a required class. I feel like she makes it this hard on purpose for torture. very detail oriented and tests are hard. don't take her. trust me.
Made this class in a WI format (65% writing the rest participation) even though this isn't a WI class! The class was boring, but that's just a personal preference. I felt like she made things way harder than it needed to be. If you do take her just get ready to have 10-20 pages a night to read and multiple papers.
Mrs. Sims knows her stuff. She made a great review for the test for students. I have had a lack of excitement for English classes, but she makes it fun with interesting lectures. I highly recommend going to her lectures. She explains so much information about the books and facilitates my learning above expectations. Take her!
I love Sims, she is very personable and her lectures were always fun. Attendance wasnt mandatory and you can pass without going as long as you go on quiz days! The quizzes are based on the text and often she gave them as group quizzes. Willing to work with you if you have to miss a test/quiz day too :)
If you enjoy history and literature, you're going to love Sims. It's super clear that she puts her heart into every lecture she does, and genuinely knows the material well. If you want to succeed, just read! Attendance isn't required, but you'll feel the burn after you walk into class and get have to take a quiz over a book you didn't read.
She will make it impossible to get an A on a paper. It is super hard to even get a B. She also does not give you your essay back until a month or so later. Her feedback is very general and does not help when you are writing your next paper because you usually have to turn in the next paper before the previous one is graded
Such a sweet lady who genuinely cares about her students. Her lectures were actually fun and informative. Tests were pretty hard but if you show up and put a little effort in its an easy A. Shes big on group conversation. Shes my first eng professor at Texas State that I actually enjoyed taking.
I literally adore Mrs. Sims. Her lectures are engaging with lots of class discussion, and even when I don't do the reading I get a good grasp of what we're talking about and what I need to know for the test. I wish I could take her for so many other courses. :0)
Professor Sims is thus far my favorite professor I have had. She really engages in the class and invites people to speak their opinions. As an English major, I learned so much. She is incredibly understanding and also makes class fun with her commentary. She gives great feedback. She truly wants you to succeed. TAKE HER!!!
Mrs. Sims is a great professor. She is very passionate about what she is teaching and it shows when she is lecturing. Her class if fairly easy, three tests, two papers and about 6 quizzes that help you to prepare for the tests. I would highly recommend taking her.
Horrible class, horrible professor not worth your time please just avoid her! I've heard so many good things about my friends professors for this class take them!
YOU NEED TO READ in this class or you will fail. If you don't have much time or/and don't like to read, PLEASE DON'T TAKE IT. and very hard to get grades.
shes so sweet!!!!! i genuinely love being in her class and you can tell shes very passionate about what she does. She doesnt intend to make things purposely hard or tricky
This was one of my favorite classes. she is truly passionate about her work and cares about her students. It's considered a writing intensive class but it wasn't too bad. You do have to do the reading to good in the class but it's not a lot of reading if you do it one time
Loved this class! The professor is very engaging and nice. There's definitely a lot of reading but if you go to class the lectures help understand them even if you're super behind. Though if you don't have time for a lot of reading or tend to hate readings it will be a difficult class. Lots of writing responses but they tend to be short.
Its pretty straight to the point. If you try youll get a good grade. Shes understanding so if something happens usually shell give a chance to make up
Laura Sims is so so sweet and you can tell she loves what she does but the class is definitely not a blow-off class. The tests are based on her lectures and if you don't write down everything she says you will miss stuff on the tests. I went to most classes and still thought the tests were hard. There are about 5 quizzes and they are all writing.
This professor was by far one of my favorite at Texas State. As long as you always attend and participate in her classes and discussions you will be fine. She is so sweet and honestly I always enjoyed class because I actually had in interest in the discussions we would have (Very pro-future, and ideas on looking at a better future for our country)
Professor Sims was great. The only way you failed was if you didn't try. Yes, you will have to write essays, but they're easy and interesting. My class was online so if you take her in person she might be different, but the only downside about her is that she takes a while take grade. Other than that, she is really chill. Take Professor Sims.
This class is very reading-focused. Attendance is not required, but most of the tests are focused on the lecture and lecture notes. Reviews are very hard to follow, and quizzes are paragraphs, not multiple choice. You need to read and go to lectures to pass the class. Only one essay, however, was easier and more fun than the quizzes.
Extremely harsh grading. TA's would give failing grades for every quiz without any feedback or acknowledgement of improvement. Even with a large percentage of the class complaining about the harsh grading Ms. Sims did not address it or do anything to help struggling students.
Professors lectures are great and immersive. The grading by the TA's are way too harsh for a mandatory class...
She very passionate and Her lectures are really enjoyable. However her and the TA's grade so harsh for a required class that alot of the students are failing. I recommend going to her office hours. Her multiple choice questions are from her lectures and group discussion so takes notes. Overall, This class is alot harder then it needs to be
Sims is a great teacher. You need to pay attention to the lectures, but reading the material/ homework isnt reaaaally needed because she basically goes over it in class. You should take notes on things that she repeats because they are probably important. She does make people who are quiet talk/ answer questions which sucks.
Honestly, I did not like this class . Teacher was very passionate about lectures, but after a while, it got boring ... Ta's graded harsh, but they were somewhat helpful when going to their office hours . You would have to lock into all the lectures to enjoy them and get an understanding.
Many students leave lectures, don't take notes, and complain of failing exams or quizzes, but if you do attend and take note of what she is speaking about not just what is on the slides, you are very likely to do well in this course. You must stick through discussions when she picks on students even though it may not be favorable to take notes.
The scheduling in this class would always be very inconsistent, I have even lost count of how many times we had to move around readings or quizzes. Sometimes quizzes were posted until the last minute. If you hate a participation-based class, skip out on this. She will pick on people even though there may be volunteers.
She was always really nice and you can tell she cares and respects her students. I am taking her again for my literature class and would rather her than anyone else. She gives lots of feedback and essays are always straight forward and fairly easy to write. Attendance matters as we do a lot of busy work and turn it in, in class.
Her WorldLit class is very writing intensive. Exams are 1/3 multiple choices and the rest is a lot of writing. aside from the she's a very good speaker and helps translate some very hard to read assignments.
Sims was an awesome professor, super funny and clearly cares about the material. Attendance isn't mandatory but most of what's on the test is covered in the lectures, not the powerpoints. Do the exam review, it's super helpful. The tests are multiple choice and writing in a specific format, so make sure you can do a thematic statement correctly.
She was such a good teacher, just know that this class is very writing heavy. LAs are the ones to grade the test but they are very clear on what they expect so as long as you do that then you're good. Tests are easy if you go to class even though attendance is not mandatory.
I loved Ms. Sims. She was really easy to talk to and gave engaging lectures. This class has weekly readings that have quizzes due before class, so staying on top of your assignments is a must. Grading was a little slow, but she and the IAs were always willing to discuss grades once they came out. Test reviews helped a lot as well.
Not bad overall! However, she is very politically leaned, and any take you have on the reading has to be within her political stance/opinion. Not bad, relatively easy if you are smart.
I found this class very engaging, Professor Sims is very nice and wants you to succeed. Attendance is not mandatory but if you want to get an A, I would show up to as many classes as you can. The exams are very easy if you show up to class and read the text book. She will literally give you exam answers in class, so show up if you can.
This professor was amazing. She turned a class that was I was not excited to take into one that I began to look forward to. Although there is a lot of reading and every class is lecture heavy, if you put any effort into listening to the lectures, you will pass the class. If you have to take a world lit class then I recommend her for sure.
I personally believe that if you're a big english brain rather than a math brain this class itches that spot! It makes you go back in time and politically think about that time period! The writing was a lot but it was relatively easy since they provide so many examples! Laura is very kind and always willing to re-discuss your grade!
Professor Sims is a very kind person although my review is bad it has nothing to do with her as a person. However the exams are hard and she gives you the review 2 days before and the review is EXTREMELY long. I've struggled immensely with this. Attendance is based on in class discussion papers that you have every single day. And readings everyday
