she's a very cool professor. she's helpful if you actually go to her office and ask her question. she may seems hard but at the end, you actually get something out of her class
She's easy to pass.
There was a lot of materials covered. I like her teaching style. She's very good with trying to get the shy people to be involved in class discussion. Tip: definately study her midterm/final study guide and be prepared during the class review sessions.
AVOID this class like the plague!Extremely strick on the paper. This is fine, but doesn't offer any help as far as how to improve them.If she give help, they are ambigious. Grading system is lop sided;Joined everytime but still got 18/40 pts.Has petpeeves
Also, she penalizes you for situations that are out of your control. Not talking about forgetting to turn your phone off in class. Her style of teaching comes off as antagonizing, and expects students to be in the same level as she is: a Ph.D deg holder
She's a cool professor and you'll learn a lot.
May not teach 210 anymore. I took it in Fall '01, but I will never forget her. Sarcastic to the point of being caustic, but nice to people she likes. Very outspoken with her personal biases. She did grade fairly, so I had few complaints in the end.
study notes and read to pass
She seems hard. She goes kind of fast in her lectures. Tad bit structured. She will make you work in class. Many written assignments. Takes role everyday.
She is a teacher that doesn't seem to relate to her students and she yells and doesn't let them explain their thoughts.
She is the worst teacher ever. They should fire her. She does not help anyone. She used words on the test that I have never heard before. You have to write a deconstruction paper. Trust me you do not want to write it. HORRIBLE. She is very hard and makes the class boring and uninteresting.
she sucks. she peels off the labels off her coke bottles and padlocks her chair to the desk. she doesn't even help you with deconstructing.
She is the worst teacher in the world. Everyone hates her. Her class is boring and very hard. she thinks she knows everything, but she does NOT. She writes her own book at a PHD level. She doesn't know anything about Psychology. She puts down Asian people. I think she hates students. WORST.
At first I was very scared of her and felt like I would never pass this class, but I did and I recieved an A. She is doesn't go out of her way to help and when you ask for it, she tries. This class was more overwhelming than anything I've done but I've never felt so accomplished in a class before.
No matter what anyone says she is a great teacher. She will break you and remake you. Changes how you think and she makes you ask the right questions. If you don't like challenges she's not the instructor for you, but if you're up to it, then she will change you life.
this teacher SUCKS! deconstruct SUCKS! she is lazy, doesnt write on the board, just sits on her ass, doesnt like people coming in late, and we cant even click pens n open the 3 ring binders, it "hurts" her ears BEWARE...
She is someone you will love or hate. I worked hard and she taught more in one semester than I had grasped in the prior 4 years. No she is not easy, and she can be snippy, but if you want to grow check her out!!
Put in average amount of work and you'll be ok on homeworks. Exams are pretty basic. Deconstruction sucks and even SHE is confused about it. She tells you your idea is right in class but when its on paper she says its wrong. Depending on her mood you can be right or wrong. Very rigid instructor
she's awesome. she grades a lil hard but if you know what you're doing in that class you're good to go. you do gotta work for your grades though. test is pretty much straight from the review sheet she gives before the test.
Don't get me wrong. The class in theory is interesting. Deconstructing is interesting, but she is horrible. Gave me horrible papers because I expressed my own views. I compared to other students and noticed same content, but they got A's. She encourages you to "think critically" but watch out. Write ur papers according to her or u get low scores!!!
her teaching sucks and she doesnt really help you with the material. if you don't go by her way then good luck with your grade. i don't recommend that anyone takes this class unless your asking for trouble.
Everyone says Uba is hard, but once to you get to her class and give her a chance, she is a good if not great prof. Class is fun depending on the ppl in the class. By far one of the best prof. I've ever had. Take her if you want the challenge, if you can't handle it, don't try. Not for weak ppl.
I did not like her the minute i met her, but you have to ask for help and she will give it, your asking does not go unoticed, you give a little you get a little, that is how the class goes, she is intimidating and the class can be very frustrating, shes not as mean as i thought she'd be, she just does not care for b.s and is straight to the point
Consider yourself lucky if you ever come across another teacher like Dr. Laura Uba in your whole college experience. It was a definite eye opener for me after taking her classes. Forget about your prejudgments and learn from her teaching skills - where else can you find a professor who does what she does? think outside of the box for a change.
i know a lot of people think she's hard. i mean she's not easy but you actually come out from that class learning something. you may not think you did but you do!! i love her teaching method. her review are so awesome. she pretty much gives you the test!
going in this class, i heard a lot of crap about the prof. but dont' listen to it, because this prof is awesome. not only is she smart, she doesn't take bs (which is good for us so it doesn't waste our time), you gain a lot from the class, and she's FUNNY! just go to class, do the papers (she'll help you with the topics) and keep the papers short.
Ok, you have to write a deconstruction paper in class, which is so freaking annoying!!!!! Other that this class is great! its more of a race and critical thinking mixed with psychological problems of AAS. Other then the paper its pretty easy and laidback class. Besides i belive its the only class that teaches psychology from a Post-Positivist pers.
i read all the comments before i took her class, i was too scared as hell. but she is not that bad. I treated her class as a challenge and i did rise to the occasion. just be ready to learn deconstruction. It is interesting but will not help you in any other class but hers. over all she is pretty cool just keep to her good side. i mean it!
i too read all the comments as was worried about her but it turned out to be one of my fav classes. she's so freaking smart and funny too. you need to learn this whole new method of learning to write the papers, but she teaches you. don't take this if you're a slacker. 3 hw. 2 midterm. 1 final. she also has petpeves. she has sensitive hearing
Dr. UBA is AWESOME! 3 easy HW assignments, term paper, midterm and final. she's sooo smart and hilarious at times. helps when you ask. take notes to do well on midterm and final. has review days for both tests. go to class coz attendance matters. getting e.c. is easy; take a picture with someone she picks from the event and you get 5pts! recommend!
Turn oFF your CELLS! Take great notes, PARTICIPATE in discussions. Speak UP, help others with deconstruction ideas. This is an amazing woman. One day you will tell your kids, you were in one of Dr. Ubas class. She is doing ground breaking work in psychology!
Just don't take this class with Uba. She is one of the co co professor. E.g. don't crumble your paper it hurt my ear.. She is hard and give you a lot of assigments.
her ignorance makes her think she is better than everyone. she gets irritated easily.."don't click your pens" "don't rip out papers from your notebook"..she has issues..she is smart tho..but socially she is very tiring..im not surprised she is crippled, old, alone/never married, angry at the world, thinks she knows it all..but doesn't know herself
Don't let the 1st day of class scare u. She may seem mean. But, it's actually not bad. I hated her the first day, but I stayed and it was actually worth it. Dis class will help you learn a lot of stuff that you haven't learned in K-12. You might find out that a lot of the information you learn in k-12 was full of BS.Good sense of humor ;) gives EC.
If you'd like a class on postmodern deconstruction then enroll in her class. But she will hold her undergrad students to her PhD level and docks points for even the most insignificant errors, then make you do useless extra English work for them. She is disparaging to her students and admits being deliberately vague on some instructions. Avoid her.
DO NOT TAKE. She discriminates, gives excessive BS Homework, is a angry sick old lady that find joy in torturing nice people. INSANELY Strict grader. I get all A's and B's but she is a pyscho lady and I might do bad. HARDCORE Hypocrite. Talks about perfect grammer all day but cant talk or explain ANYTHING clearly her self.

At first I was terrified of her and I thought she was insane but now I wish I could take another class with her. She was also one of the funniest teachers Ive ever had and is always willing to help during her office hours. If you work hard, answer at least one question during review sessions and format your papers the right way youll be fine.
I do not recommend this prof: She has too many personal problems (issues) that affects her professionalism. She demonstrates bi-polar symptoms. She does not create an ethical classroom environment. All past negative rating IMHO is really true. A young student can be mental hurt by this prof. Do not enroll in her class.
This away from this prof. real bad news, shows her hatred toward student. Not at all professional, do not believe the positive ratings. Trust me bad news herem do not waste your time or money.
Believe the students that have written the negative comments abt Laura. Laura is extremely immature although having a PhD. she is afraid of teaching new material. Her own book is riddle w/ serious mistakes and too many cited works. She has given student w/ published work an "F", saying this student's grammar is poor quality. U have been warned!
I's half way through her AAS350 class, and think that she's a great prof. I didn't do well on my midterms since i took it late, which is my fault n not hers! Make sure to show her respect by following her simple rules, such as closing her office door, turning off cell phones, not taking breaks during class...etc. cont...
cont.. If you are in school to LEARN great material, then she is the one to take. She's also very funny, and her class is always interesting. Be clear with your statements, since she doesn't accept bs answers/statements. Go to her office hours if you need help, because she's there and willing to help you. I highly recommend this professor!
WORST TEACHER EVER! DONT ENROLL IN HER CLASS!
She is a very hard grader. Please don't take this class!!! You will faill, trust me!
If you want an easy class, stay away from Uba. However, while she will not accept BS, she will not waste your time either. If you're the kind of student looking for a real challenge, she will teach you how to write better and a lot about Asian American studies without political charge or whining.
WARNING!!!!YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED USES WORDs like "suck-up", stabs up in the back, and nasty personality.
This class shall be the death of my GPA! TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH! i admit, she knows what she's talking about, but it is hard! she scares me...
WHAT A MISTAKE I HAVE MADE TAKING THIS CLASS ! SHE IS UNCLEAR ABOUT WHAT SHE WANTS. SHE DOESNT TELL US AHEAD OF TIME WETHER WE ARE SURPOST TO PRINT OUT A SPECIFIC PAPER AND SHE TAKES OFF POINTS FOR NOT HAVING IT. SHE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER! DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!
do not take her she is the worst professor ever. Although she knows what shes talking about shes so rude and doesnt care much about her students grades.
WORST TEACHER DO NOT TAKE HER!! YOU WILL REGRET IT
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!! DO NOT TAKE HER... WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY...:(
If you need to take this class, all you need is to be patient. She will rule you in order to pass AAS 210 class. She is a old school person. I agree with many people's rates, and it is true if you not fit in her style. Good luck everyone.
She is hard. However, it is college and classes should be challenging. this one was challenging by far for me for a lower div. Anyhow, she is willing to help you if you show her that you are trying. Participation is a plus in her class. participation really helped me this semester. got a A. will take her again cause you really learn from her.
I like her as a teacher and her beliefs but do not like her tests they are some of the hardest tests I have ever taken in college!
To be honest, this professor is completely and totally nuts. She is all over the place. I can see how some like her but if she decides she doesnt like you for some reason, you will suffer. Extremely strict, by the books, often mades rude and unprofessional comments. I've tried getting help from her and she said she "didn't have the time for me."
I love this professor!! At first I was really hesitant to take her class due to such negative reviews, but it's really worth it you guys. 2 midterms, 1 final, 2 papers. Tests are not easy, but we do a review prior to taking the tests and tests are basically just copied and pasted from our reviews. Just show up, don't be late, and don't be lazy.
Her class is extremely challenging. It's important to visit her during office hours to ensure a good grade on your writing assignments, she gives to the point feedback. You'll learn to be a more straightforward writer. Participation puts her in a good mood. Test are hard, so study! The most I've learned in one class!
Uba rocks! she can be hard, and may come off in the wrong way, but she's a nice old lady. She gives out a lot of extra credit and knows a ton. I recommend her if you want to learn a lot.
Professor Uba is an amazing instructor. She teaches you issues that you will never learn anywhere else. There are 2 midterms, 2 short papers and a final. She offers a lot of extra credit, just don't be late. This class is an awesome class! You'll learn history through eyes of UBA! Good luck and have fun! :)
Dont expect an easy grade when taking her class, but if u want to learn and to be discipline, then take her. she'll literally give 0 on your papers if you dont do it well
She is very very strict, you NEED to do all of her work or else you will fail. She is really harsh, sometimes comes off as very rude but if you really want to learn something take her. I guarantee you will learn something and if you do all of her work you will get a good grade.
She is good teacher and you will learn a lot.She is just hard, so be ready to read and write term papers.
Oh my god! Rude, unhelpful, and just a plain ol' pain. She is very picky with topics and will throw it in your face if you do not provide something that she believes is good enough. Her ear problem makes her complain just about every little thing as well.
First impression: Intimidating. But I grew to love her. She's really funny and passionate about her field. She's a tough grader though, and deconstruction is a pain, but the class helps you learn to improve your writing/ thinking. Her lectures are fascinating!
Difficult class and you need to study your butt off. 2 "essay" topics, 2 midterms and a final. She may seem intimidating but there is a reason she's like that. Just listen to what she wants and do what is told. I got a A- but that was through studying her notes a lot.
DO NOT TAKE HER! THE WORST speech professor ever. This was just a speech class but you ll have to do leave other classes' works and spend a lot of time for just picking up a topic. Not a fun class if you are not interested in AAS. You can't choose your topic freely and the speech topics are all have to be related to AAS community and experience.
Have to put a lot of effort in it but easy if you don't mind putting an effort as you get a lot of extra credit chances to pull up your grade. Scary, but fun professor too if you do your work. :)
Most of the people who fail this class are the ones who just stop showing up five weeks in because they were too intimidated by her. This class is simple to pass so long as you read the syllabus - all the instructions you need are there. Turn in the outlines on time and be prepared and you'll do fine. Don't fight with her, just listen.
This class was fun and interesting also somewhat challenging if you don't study! You definitely will learn a lot. Her tests are pretty simple it's not impossible to gain an A, but you have to study hard. She gives extra credit points later in the semester so pay attention to what she teach in class because she will come back to them.
As a person, she is an angel. But when it comes to the work load, it's the work of the devil. It's a lot so if you're up for the challenge take this class. 4 speeches (please do your research ahead of time). THE SYLLABUS IS THE BIBLE TO THIS CLASS READ IT THOROUGHLY! At the end, she gives out a lot of extra credit take advantage!
As a person, she is a sweetheart. When it comes to the workload, it's a lot so if you're up for the challenge take this class. 4 speeches. Come to class because one day missed you'll fall behind. THE SYLLABUS IS THE BIBLE TO THIS CLASS READ IT THOROUGHLY! At the end, she gives out a lot of extra credit take advantage!
In the beginning, she will seem intimidating, but don't let that stop you from enrolling in this class. This class is for serious students and those who complain about her are the ones who slack off. She has 2 papers (2 sentences each) and is pure lecture. She is the reason why I'm double majoring in AAS. She is humorous and relatable at times.
She is intimidating at first but over all she is a sweet person! You just have to read the website and make sure you do according to her rule! It is pretty simple to get an A if you just follow what she says. Read everywhere in the textbook and take a very very good note. What she says during the lecture will be on the tests!
Just follow her rule. Learned a lot. Take a very good note and read everywhere in the textbook!
Challenging and strict professor, but very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the subject. Not an easy A, but it is possible! I definitely enjoyed this class and learned a lot more than any of my other classes I've taken. If you're looking for a caring and challenging professor, I highly recommend! especially AAS majors and minors.
She may seem strict, but only if she can tell that you have no interest in the subject. As an AAS professor, she is very knowledgeable about the subject and she knows a lot of facts and little tidbits that keep the class interesting; chances are that you will learn at least one new thing, big or small, with every session. If you enjoy AAS, take her
I was very intimidated at first, but she is honestly one of the best professors I've had so far. She's very helpful, interesting, funny, so sweet, and very supportive if you show that you're really trying. Participate in class as much as possible! She's helped me improve my writing immensely! Love her. Not an easy A, but definitely not impossible.
Please do not take her. Her class is becoming harder than my accounting or economics classes. She is very rude and prefers to criticize rather than give feedback. There are only about 4 major assignments in her class but she is so awful at describing what she wants that they become very difficult. Save yourself and crash a different class.
If you want to take her, GOOD LUCK. She's unclear on assignment, and loves tricking you into not doing them correctly. Grammar and spelling is a must, -1 for every mistake on a 5 point assignment. I've known people who gets 0 on almost all their assignment and it wasn't the content that was the problem. Go to the restroom -x pts and not tell you.
Please do not take her. Her class is becoming harder than my Stats or Psych classes. She is very rude and prefers to criticize rather than give feedback. There are only about 4 major assignments in her class but she is so awful at describing what she wants that they become very difficult. Save yourself and find another speech class.
I look forward to her class, believe it or not. Many make her class seem so hard and whatnot, but her lectures are really interesting. She's a very cute and quirky professor who DOES give a lot of reading. BUT HEY. It's college. It won't be too easy. Just read her notes and pay attention in class, guaranteed a good grade. Lots of EC towards the end
Her class is easy. Literally. All you gotta do is show up and participate. If you actually participate & seem interested, you'll get on her good side and boom-- easy A. She does give you a lot of notes, so I recommend you buy a binder to put it in. Her lecture follows through with her notes, and her tests is literally the notes that she gives you.
Lots of reading for sure. you definitely have to pay attention during lectures and read the dang notes. She's an insightful professor who is truly passionate about what she does. You'll see. Lots of EC towards the end, but that won't be able to save you. Overall, it's a class that changed the way I think and perceive society. Very enlightening.
As for lectures, she's a very quick lecturer of which, at least for me, it was difficult to keep up with the note taking. Then again, the class was only about an hour long. She is a very tough grader, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the papers. Most students struggle in this class, so just hang in there and if you try hard enough, maybe you'll pass.
She's a rude grader, will write unnecessary mean comments on papers. She's very straight to the point when you go to her office, so know what you're going to say. Buy the correct book, study for tests (Only 2, midterm & final), she talks fast & wants you to write a lot in the beginning semester (has little patience to repeat herself). Make friends.
WORST PROFESSOR AT CSUN. SHE IS RUDE, HARD GRADER, AND SO MANY MEAN COMMENTS ON PAPER. ALSO, SHE DOES NOT USE ANY TYPES OF TEXTBOOK, AND TALKS REALLY FAST.
Worst teacher I've ever taken, had to switch out of her class because it was becoming unnecessarily hard. She was very rude and criticized just about everything spoken by a student. Made you feel insecure to speak in a speech class, it was extremely ridiculous. Would recommend this to NO ONE and would warn EVERYONE to STAY AWAY.
She's probably the worst professor I've taken at CSUN. For a speech class, it was so unnecessarily hard. She spent most of the lectures scaring the students about how they're going to fail. She belittles you, makes you feel stupid, leaves rude and unhelpful notes on your paper. I really don't think she should be teaching. DON'T TAKE HER!
I am a straight A student and had to resort taking this class for my electives since I couldn't get into anything else. Big mistake. It ended up ruining my perfect 4.0 GPA and this is my 4th year. I might not get into medical school now because of her. Stay away!
Everybody in this class I'm almost friends with because everybody has the possibility of failing as me. A class that is not only extra hard, but with an extra rude professor. The class is almost a disgrace to be in because of the disrespect given to me, and others, who in which not only are adults, not only fund her career, but were forced to take.
Uba's an amazing professor, though she can be intimidating at first. However, she truly wants to teach you about the subject and history of Asian Americans. Definitely make sure to participate in class, take good notes, and ask her for help if needed. It might seem like a lot of reading, but everything is doable. There are study guides too :)
Lol tbh she gives hella extra credit and gives you a chance to pass. I struggled in the beginning and went from a C to an A. Shes funny and smart af. Yah shes rude and she writes too much on ur papers but she aint thay bad.
She's the rudest professor I've ever had. If you want a professor that respects you, look somewhere else. She has absolutely no respect for her students. She doesn't explain anything at all and expects you to know everything. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I am so upset I didn't drop out. I should've dropped out when my friend dropped out first.
If you care about AAS or Ethnic Studies in general, this is the class for you. Uba's personality takes a little getting used to, that's for sure. But if you put in the work, read the syllabus very carefully and stick by it -- you'll be golden. Uba has such a sharp memory and I personally looked forward to each day of class. Not for the weak-hearted
Dr. Uba is brutally honest, not rude. I enjoyed the class and I put in A LOT of work. This class is difficult but not impossible. You really have to think deep for this Asian American psychology course, and she teaches you how to! I left the class with a broader perspective. Read the syllabus and see if you can handle it, she's very knowledgeable!
Dr. Uba is definitely a tough teacher. She makes life difficult for those students who don't put in work or care to show up to class. She makes her class VERY clear in her syllabus. Read the syllabus, GO to her office hours, and you are guaranteed an A. If you play by the rules and are NICE, she will give you enormous amounts of extra credit.
Uba may seem like an intimidating professor if you're thinking about AAS210, especially with a 15+ page outline of the class. When you take it, it's actually easy to pass. She's very straightforward about how the papers are to be written, what and when things are turned in, but from the OUTLINE. Read the outline, do the work, and you'll be fine.
She does belittle students, she is rude and has little patience. Too hard for a lower division speech class, I have friends with easier speech classes that are upper division. Do not take if you do not have to, wait for the next semester.
A lot of people think that she is rude or belittling. This isnt true. Shes blunt, and the only time she ever comes across as rude is to students who dont care, are late consistently, or dont follow instructions. The class may seem like a lot of work, but as long as you stay on top of it (and read the directions very thoroughly) its an easy A.
NOT for faint of heart egotist grade perfectionist mechanical thinkers. Uba will push you to think like never before. It'll be frustrating. Don't be sensitive. Listen. Triple check instructions. Ask questions. Make mistakes. DON'T repeat them. Go to office hours. Put in real effort. The reward: an honest grade and true test of collegiate competency
We struggled a lot in terms of our grades since she did not use canvas for our class so we are clueless about our progress. She only has a little patience which is why people might see her as rude but just do your work on time and always grab EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES. For me, it is too hard for a lower division speech class but not impossible!
She was extremely harsh and overly critical of a class thats typically mostly freshman. She started the first day off with a haunting monologue about how difficult speech writing is and how so many of her students do poorly unless they spend hours daily for her class. She assigns way too much busy work & will worsen your anxiety about speaking.
Awesome Shes not difficult you just need to read instructions It appears that Uba is writing the same positive review over and over to boost the rating but ignore those SHE WILL MAKE YOU WORK WAY TOO HARD for a class thats not intended to be upper division
