Van Dorn is an interesting teacher. While I found no interest in the subject, I did attend class simply to see what she was wearing that day and who she would make a fool of. Internet homework is important, and the tests are far harder than you expect. Van Dorn has no issue in calling out a student in class (and on occasion, it was me).
Dr. Van Dorn is a really good CHEM teacher. She is mean, but I think it is hilarious. I never read the book and got a B, I didnt think the test were hard if you went to class. You didnt even have to have alot of CHEM 151 memory. The preceptors are very dumb, useless.
Van Dorn is an amazing teacher with a real talent for teaching. Her unique teaching style will keep you on the edge of your seat. She loves in-class demonstrations, especially ones that explode. Pay attention, or she'll yell at you. Be on time, or she'll yell at you. Don't text/Facebook, or she'll yell at you. Awesome professor, awesome class.
Very helpful. Should attend class if you want to be able to understand everything for tests. Great sense of humor
She is an awesome teacher and she really wants you to understand the material. Only take her class if you really want to learn, not if you want to sit on Facebook or your phone. If your class has a good energy, then she will happy. She has an awesome sense of humor. I recommend getting any type of chem textbook because she expects you to read.
She is an awful teacher. Her slides are always incorrect and she wastes class time by fixing them. She doesn't know what's going on and pays more attention to her hair than to the topics.
Dr. Van Dorn is a weird person, but she's a good lecturer and her classes always do better than most other classes on the test. Go to class and don't be late or talk, because she'll start to dislike you. She may seem really mean, but just follow her rules and do what she says and you'll be fine.
Read through the comments. Consider yourself warned. Job #1 is teaching ability not intelligence or looks. You are hiring an educator, remember? I seriously can not recall one professor who is less capable. If you must take her course don't bother asking questions in class, use the TA's. Consider avoiding lecture entirely, you'll do better.
At the beginning of the semester, I didn't really like Van Dorn, but as the semester wore on, i liked her more and more. She explains everything thats on the test, so there are no real surprises. Also, she gets really mad when people are late or talk during class. And she's pretty attractive. live.laugh.love.
Dr. Van Dorn was a great professor. She has absolutely no problem with making you feel stupid about your questions, and loves catching you texting and making a fool of you. She didn't have a lot of time in her office hours to help you, as I was there a lot. The preceptors are awesome and really helped. GET ON HER GOOD SIDE EARLY.
Van Dorn is very impressed with her own intelligence. If you want to be lectured to as if you were in elementary school, take Van Dorn. If you want to be treated like an adult, avoid her.
She's probably the least organized professor I've ever had. Her quirks are matched only by her lack of knowledge of General Chemistry. She's not clear, barks at her students, and overall, is ineffective as an isntructor. Don't bother going to lecture, and read the text instead. Go to preceptor reviews before exams if you want some direction.
Van Dorn has a wicked, dry sense of humor, which is just my style. She doesn't like people being on their cell phones during lecture and has no problem publicly humiliating people who are being distractions. Pay attention and participate and you'll be fine, she does a good job preparing you for exams.
Good professor, great clarity really helps has a bold sense of humor and most importantly she is REALLY HOT!
She's very good, as far as the Chem 151 professors go, although the tests were very difficult at times to understand since another teacher wrote the test. However, go to lecture, read the book, and study before the test and you'll be fine.
Van Dorn is a wonderful professor! This is a tough subject but she does a great job simplifying it and preparing you for the test. She gives you innumerable opportunities for help if you're having difficulty and, as long as you go to the study sessions and do all the practice problems she gives you, you can easily get an A in this class.
Good teacher, but wouldn't recommend her. The advance slides do not match her class slides. She is very kind in the beginning, but as the semester goes on she can be rude. If you don't understand something best bet use google or even go to another professors office hour so you will not fill like a dumb ass for asking a question.
Ive never bothered writing a comment on this for a teacher, but Dr. Van Dorn was an excellent teacher. I got a C in the class but I also know i didnt put in the necessary effort to get an A. Its a really hard class that you have to go to but she really is a great teacher. If you do the work you'll be fine.
Dr. Van Dorn is one of those teachers that will respect you if you respect her and chemistry. I loved her dry humor and you can tell she really loves the subject. This is not an easy class but if you put effort into it you can pass easily; I received an A at the end of the semester. Study early and go to the review sessions too, they help a lot!
This semester was easier for me, but Van Dorn cares for students who care to learn. If you are loud or disruptive, she'll call you out on it. She adds humor and dry sarcasm into her teaching which helps make it a little more interesting. It's not an easy A, but she does curve the class which definitely helps!
She is a great teacher! She makes sure the class is interesting and does a lot of really cool experiments in class. It is hard though so make sure you go to class and pay attention. She also does participation points in class but I got 100 and missed a few of the assignments she did. Good luck!
It's difficult to do really well in this class but not impossible. I got a B, because of the curve. It had to be at least 5%. I thought she was really funny. Going to class is extremely helpful. She posts advance slides that you should review and then complete slides after class. Go to office hours and sit up close so she can get to know you.
She lets you know what to expect on the test. The first test was really hard but you learn what to expect overtime. Study the lectures and the textbook. Make sure you understand the concept. She's bad at explaining concepts because she'll go over them really fast. I did well in lab & the later tests so I got an A :)
Great teacher & hilarious! She posts preview slides and full slides but DON'T SKIP CLASS (if you can help it). The tests can be tough and she doesn't curve until the very end. Also, don't come in late cuz she'll make faces or comments at your expense. Check preview slides EVERY DAY cuz she sometimes gives print only assignments for credit.
She's a very energetic professor. She keeps class as interesting as she can and is great when you have any questions. She doesn't like when students leave early, but she wouldn't notice if she didn't show up. There are readings every week, but I've gotten A's on all my tests without doing them. And she provides great study guides before each test.
She's funny and energetic. No lecture is going to be fun, but her's is definitely the least boring so far. She makes sure you know what to expect on the tests and provides great study guides. She's also really helpful in person. You'll do fine as long as you go to class.
Very good professor, she is funny and energetic. She is great at teaching and makes going to class fun. The only annoying thing is that she doesn't let you use your phone (or iPod for that matter) for any reason (even as a calculator or to take notes). Other than that, she is probably my favorite instructor of the semester.
I love Van Dorn! She's so sweet and really helpful. Her lecture usually goes by really fast. The tests are a bit challenging but if you put in the work and read the book and do the practice she gives you, you'll do fine! Definitely one of the best chem professors out there!
Dr. Van Dorn is a wonderful professor. It is obvious that she really enjoys teaching and is happy to be there. She does a lot of cool demos throughout the year and is always very willing to answer questions in class. Don't choose this course if you plan on talking during lecture or goofing off because she will mock you in front of the entire class.
Good teacher and funny but the test questions are worded different than the sapling hw problems and what we did in class, making it almost impossible to get anything higher than a C on. Ive never had a C in my life and ended up with one in this course. Don't take it if you're not willing to put in 100% effort
Professor is funny and does demos on occasion, even if they don't go well. If you have a solid background in chemistry this shouldn't be a problem for you but if you don't I would recommend using the book and getting help. However the test averages were low C's and D's, but as long as you do the online homework and do well in lab it should be okay.
I freaking love Van Dorn. Her class is always interesting and the tests aren't too bad if you study. It isn't impossible to get an A. She's really funny and personable, and will always help you out at office hours. And her hair rocks.
Van Dorn is awesome! She is very personable and easy to talk to. Her lectures go by really fast and it is very clear that she wants you to succeed. She will go out of her way to help you including posting full lecture notes, hosting review sessions and making sure many resources are available to you. I would definitely recommend her class!
did not like her at all never answers emails
Van Dorn wasn't a bad teacher at all. She is very outgoing and I looked forward to her classes! Chemistry isn't my favorite subject and she tried to make it as interesting as possible. I understood most of her lectures. Class test averages weren't that great, but if you really study and do well in lab, you would get an A in the class.
She was very enthusiastic about chemistry and she is a great person to get to know! I really loved taking this class, it is a TON of work but you learn a lot!
Dr. Van Dorn was a good teacher, although the tests were hard. They put mostly trick questions on the test, making it hard to get the right answer, but she was very good at explaining concepts.
She is a great lecturer. In her office hours, however she is extremely unhelpful. I can't stand that part of her teaching. it's better to visit tutor hours than ever waste your time trying to get one on one help from her. She uses the same test as all of the other chem teachers so her tests are no harder. I'd recommend her
Chemistry 151 is a very difficult class, so no matter who your teacher is, be prepared to work hard. I like teachers who use power points with their lectures and are very straightforward. Dr. Van Dorn was really clear in her explanations. I wish she gave more practice problems though since there wasn't a lot of homework.
Attendance is absolutely necessary if you want to establish an understanding of the course. Overall she did pretty well at explaining concepts, however I did not feel that the tests were fair. I went above and beyond and still received a C on most tests. The class was very difficult and demanding as expected.
The whole chemistry department is boned. Good luck.
Not a good lecturer in my opinion and she is very egoistic. She goes through her powerpoint extremely fast and the practice problems/study guides on sapling were not helpful at all. Stay away if you want your GPA to stay intact!!
The material is so difficult and she doesn't take the time to explain it well. The work load is so huge that it consumes your entire schedule and every single test had a failing average. Extremely difficult. I withdrew and I am dreading to have to take it again next semester.
This tests for this class were extremely difficult coming from someone who is more of a math & science type person. I never got above a C. But try to stay above the AVERAGE on the tests and you should be fine! Still got a B thanks to the curve.
If you attend class regularly, stay on top of the homework, and utilize the resources (worksheets, powerpoints, study guides) there should be no reason you receive less than a B in this course. If you are not a Chemistry buff, I highly recommend reading the book - Trust me! It does have some helpful stuff. Got an easy A and really enjoyed Van Dorn.
Tough course, but you can surely find success as long as you work hard and devote time for course material. Though I did well and looked forward to learning, I seriously dreaded going to VanDorn's class. I did not find her personable by any means and she did not take the time to answer my questions during office hours.
Van Dorn expects you to put in effort to do well in the course. As long as you use the resources, do the homework, and study, you can get an A. Although she may not be personable and her teaching style bland (making classes longer), she does a great job teaching the material. Our class always scored better than the other professors' on the tests.
Van Dorn is a very good gen chem professor. She explains the concepts well and gives you all the resources you need to succeed. If you have a chem background like I do then this class will be pretty easy for you.
Dr. Van Dorn is an amazing professor. She really wants you to succeed and she tries to make things as clear and fun as possible, even answering what some might consider dumb questions. Read the book, print out the slides, do Sapling and go to office/preceptor hours! It's not an easy A, but it's not impossible to do well if you put in the effort.
Van Dorn is a great teacher! She provides you with a bunch of study material for tests and does a lot of practice problems in class. Always review old tests because some questions are reused on later tests.
Dr Van Dorn is a good professor and knows what shes talking about but her lectures feel like they take years. if you want to succeed in this class, you have to work really hard, the tests are super hard and I had hardly any idea what was going on most of the time.
A good gen chem professor. She is fairly engaging during her lectures and explains the concepts well. One downside is that her lectures have a slow pace so sometimes a whole class seems really repetitive. But she does prepares you well for exams if you do all the sapling and pay attention.
Van Dorn is great. Mixes humor with lecture in a great presentation format. Although this class was personally doable, there were classmates who spent more time studying and didn't have the same high results. In Fall 2013, 85+ was an A. I recommend her; she's the best 151 teacher I could ask for.
One of my favorite professors last semester. She has a great sense of humor and teaches the concepts well.
This teacher was terrible, the class average for all the exams were below a 66%'s. The only fun thing about the class was when the class ended. There is not assigned book she just gives you 3 different books to choose from and everything it online and long.
Professor Van Dorn is an incredible professor. I have never been very good at chemistry, but she knew exactly how to explain chemistry in a way that made it easier to understand. I was always excited to go to her class, even though it was at 8am. Her passion for chemistry is evident in her lectures, and I admire that.
One of my favorites. Passionate, intelligent, funny. Her lectures are seamless, easy to follow, and generally meticulous. The exams are not easy, but they are fair. It is very important to understand concepts as well as procedures. Occasional in-class participation assignments, all resources (excluding text) online.
At the beginning of the semester, you would think that you would enjoy this class, but really, it is NOT an easy A. The class consists of 4 exams and a final. The homework is online but you really do need the textbook because there's homework from the chapter AND reading quizzes. MAKE FRIENDS IN THE CLASS AND FORM A GOOD STUDY GROUP.
Van Dorn was a breath of fresh air after my 151 professor. These gen chem courses are never easy and this one is no different. However, Van Dorn tries to prepare you for the exams the best she can . I cannot emphasize enough how helpful lecture was. She has practice problems galore and explains them thoroughly. Very approachable
LOVE HER SO MUCH! I got an A for chem 151 in Spring 2014!! Her lectures were easy to understand and interesting! And now I'm taking 152 with her and I think I would have an A again!! If she'll teach O CHEM, I would definitely choose her but she don't..... To get a good grade, reading the textbook before class is really important!
LOVE HER SO MUCH! Her lecture was interesting and easy to understand. Reading the textbook before class was essential. I didn't do a lot of work but still got an A. This semester I have my 152 class with her and I think I would have an A. If she would teach O CHEM I will definitely choose her but she don't. :(
Dr. Van Dorn doesn't make getting an A easy, but there isn't an ounce of me that regrets taking her course. Her lectures are clear cut, she gives numerous practice problems in her power points, and homework problems are always helpful. She is also hilarious and her lectures are fun! Also - if you go to office hours you won't regret it!
Tests are difficult and the averages were poor because of it. The only thing that Is saving this class from falling is the curve. Be prepared to work for even a C.
I hate her and her stupid class. the exam are really hard and she is not funny. her homework are hard to because sapling is stupid. she is a good teacher but you to prepare yourself by reading the book and doing practice problems. don't take this class with other hard classes. Form a good study group.
Dr. Van Dorn is one of my favorite professors. I took chem in high school and at another college before transferring and hated it, but she made everything so clear and enjoyable. This is by far the easiest chem class I have taken, and I really enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend her.
This class is hard and by no means an easy A. Yet, I love Van Dorn and her style of teaching and I really fo feel like I learned and retained chemistry. There are a lot of exams and homework but she ends up curving the class. She really wants to see her students succeed and even though the class was hard, I enjoyed it.
Van Dorn is such a smart and respectable teacher..... for CHEM 151 & 152. she makes passing CHEM 101A impossible. I went to office hours, SI sessions and did all the sapling assignments and still failed the class. she also said she would give a curve, but it ended up only being 2%.
I LOVED THIS CLASS AND DR. VAN DORN !:) I came into the class with no chem background and was dreading it but now I truly enjoy chem. Dr. Van Dorn is entertaining, and makes her lectures incredibly engaging and informative. I would definitely recommend going to the lectures but, if you do, and fully understand the HW you can definitely get an A.
Before taking this class I did not like chemistry and had not taken chem since sophomore year of high school. I never thought I would say this, but thanks to Professor Van Dorn I now like chem! She is a great teacher and her lectures have lots of practice problems that are similar to the questions on the tests.
I took AP chem in high school, so 152 was pretty easy for me. I was able to get an A without the curve (which was somewhere around 8%). Her tests are pretty much just sapling and lecture problems with different numbers. Also do well in lab, for that helps a lot too.
Tests are a lot harder and different than you are expecting, spent hours studying for them and never got good grades. She makes you feel dumb at office hours. Goes through lectures super fast and it is almost impossible to keep up. Horrible at explaining, does offer extra credit but it doesn't help much. Sapling is the only thing that helps grade.
Let me start with the math of this class. Every test is filled with math questions. If you can't do the chem math, you can't do the class. She puts questions up during lecture and just says okay do it. we all look at each other like do you know how to do this? NO?! Terrible lectures, I would not recommend this class with Van Dorn.
Dr. Van Dorn was very funny, however, I did not find her to be the best lecturer. I took AP Chem in high school which helped me succeed in her class. Nevertheless, her lectures were generally not helpful because she would go too fast or give unclear examples that were unrelated to exams. She was always available if students needed extra help.
A lot of the effort in her classes needs to be put in by the student. Yes, the exams are tough but she lets you know that if you are above average on the exams then you will be fine. She loves to see enthusiasm for chemistry and see the lightbulbs come on when it clicks. I took her for both 151 and 152 and don't regre it one iota. Do the reading!
People need to stop blaming the exam on her (or the other chem teachers for that matter). She didn't make them! Anyways, as for Van Dorn. I loved her dry humor. She knows plenty of what she is talking about and is very clear on what she expects from you. Not going to class and missing assignments is a death sentence. I liked this class.
Took AP chem, so this class was a breeze. Examples in lecture were done very slowly (510 min problem you can finish in 2 minutes max). Slides posted online. Attendance not mandatory, but she gives pop participation (which don't affect your grade much). HUGE curve! Final is cumulative from ACS (no math, all theory).
Tests are a lot harder and different than you are expecting, spent hours studying for them and never got good grades. She makes you feel stupid at office hours. Goes through lectures ridiculously fast and it is almost impossible to keep up.
Tests are wayyy harder than they need to be. I know people who've taken this class after 151152, and every one of them says this one is a lot harder to pass. When half the class is getting 30%'s on the easiest test, then you'd think she'd try to fix something. She's admitted to not teaching stuff she thinks is boring, even though it's on the test.
Her tests are way harder than they ever need to be. Long lectures. Doesn't return emails. Overall I believe she is a horrible chemistry teacher.
Van Dorn is very passionate about Chemistry and interesting, she definitely puts in effort to make the material understandable. She has alot of practice examples in her lectures to work through during class where you can ask her or the preceptors for help. Her tests are very fair but make sure to study and go to all of the classes.
Ive had Van Dorn for both Chem 101a and Chem 101b. She is truly passionate about Chemistry and will try to explain everything to the best of her ability. She also really care about her students and moves her office hours to better fit her students schedule. But, if you think just because its Chem 101 its going to be easy, think again.
Ive had Van Dorn for both Chem 101a and Chem 101b. If you think just because its Chem 101 its going to be easy, think again. This is a hard class, but if you work at it, you can do it. (there is also a curve)
I don'y understand why everyone thinks this class is so hard. Yes, the material covered is difficult, it's chemistry it's not going to be easy no matter who the teach is. The class is a totally doable A though. The tests are very straightforward, they are on the same exact material covered in class. I got an A on every single test, I studied though
Dr. Van Dorn made Chemistry my favorite course here at the U of A. I am a pre nursing student. Yes, the classes may be intensive and the tests are meant to stimulate thought- but that is exactly what pre health majors should be prepared for. Dr Van Dorn is passionate about chem and makes learning fun. Her excitement is contagious
Don't take her class if you want to fail. Simple.
If I wanted to take this class again for a better grade I totally would, the only reason I ended up with a B was because I didn't study enough or go to office hours. Dr. Van Dorn is a great lecturer and huge chemistry dork. Very passionate about the subject, pretty funny but needs to have better time management with her lessons. Go to class!
I had Dr. Van Dorn for 101a and 101b. I came into class with no Chemistry background and was able to pull off an A in both. If you go to class, read, and do the Sapling homework, it is more than possible to pull of an A.
I absolutely love Prof. Van Dorn! She is a huge step up from my previous chemistry teachers. The material may be challenging for some, but she does try and break it down into its simplest components for her students. Tests were not too difficult, but they definitely do require an understanding of material. I highly recommend her if you take chem!
So if you have never taken a chem class, like me, DO NOT take this course. She starts off at the beginning of the semester by saying to not worry about the course if you haven't taken chem before. She doesn't make it understandable at all. She says she will make you love chem after her class. LIES!
Van Dorn is wonderful! I had her for both 101A and 101B and she makes me want to minor in chemistry! If she taught 151 I definitely would. She makes you read in 101B but I have to admit I never bought the book and did fine! She puts up a ton of practice assignments and problems. Just wish she managed her time better in lecture.
I've never taken a Chem class and that was a HUGE mistake. She says that that's ok and that if you get help you will be fine...I don't agree. The class is extremely fast paced and the content is very difficult. And VanDorn may appear "sassy" to some people but in my personal opinion a lot of things she says are just rude.
In order to succeed in Dr. Van Dorn's class, you must put in work. She is very helpful during her office hours, but she can give speedy lectures. As long as you are keeping up with notes and homework outside of class, you will be fine. If you don't want to put in the work, don't expect an A. (BTW the class is curved)
Van Dorn is very intelligent but to the point that she should not be teaching Freshman Chemistry. Her lectures are useless and long as they don't teach you anything and she tends to ramble. After a while, it seems like she is speaking another language. I would recommend taking this class at a community college. Not easy once so ever.
There's online homework every week. She always makes class longer by like 3-5 minutes than what it's supposed to be. Some of the preceptors are no help. You have to practice the problems 2 or 3 times to get them right on the exam. I think it's too hard to be considered a 101 class.
Her class is not easy whatsoever. She says she will help but it feels more like she makes fun of people for not knowing. She is very rude and her class is very fast paced to be a beginner class. Too much work and the test are difficult.
She was one of the worst professors I have ever had, she is cruel and judgmental when asked for help and treats you as if her class is the only one that should matter out of the most likely 5 or 6 you're taking. She gives pop quizzes the day before Thanksgiving and acts inconvenienced when you come to her office hours for help. Absolutely terrible
Really have to work for an A or B. If you do all quizzes, hw and participation those are easy 150 pts. Lowest test gets dropped but they are tough. And final is cumulative and worth150pts. Get ready to read bc there is alot to cover. Homework does not reflect what she is teaching and preceptors themselves dont even know the answers to it sometimes.
I found this class to be extremely difficult. The material in class would seem easy enough, but her exams were always much harder than the material she taught during her lectures. I put more effort into this class than any other class I have taken in the past and still left every exam feeling confused and frustrated.
If you're scrolling through and picking classes and are looking for the perfect class to fail, this is the one for you. The days we had class I contemplated flushing my head down the toilet repeatedly until I became a sewer rat from the movie "Flushed away". I loved this class it made me cry myself to sleep every night. Would take again.
I loved this class. Yes there was mandatory reading before lecture, she has reading quizzes due before every lecture, and tough homework due every Sunday but she was an amazing lecture and really tried to make it as understandable as possible. She also posts a ton of extra practice in posted notes and work sheets. Very Very helpful in office hours.
Okay here's the thing, I'm currently in 101b, took 101a with her and it was tough, but I wish I would've put in the effort to get an "A" cause it's totally doable. She's a fantastic professor and has this love for chemistry that no one understands lol. Her and preceptors are very helpful you just need to actually get help if you start feeling lost!
this a class where you need to try 101b is a crash course on ochem and biochem it's hard. Dr. Van Dorn is the sassiest professor you will ever meet but she loves chemistry and she is helpful. i would go to SI sessions before going to her office hours because she will call you out for being so far behind. The tests are hard but mostly fair.
She is the worst teacher ever. Never take this class. Very difficult grader and professor. Find a different teacher because she is not a fair teacher and teaches at a very high level that is almost impossible to grasp.
Dr. Van Dorn was one of my favorite professors. She is very helpful when you go to her office hours but will call you out for being behind. The material is hard but if you put in the effort and work for it you can get an A. Her tests are hard but they are fair. Do all the things she says to do like practice problems and worksheets. They Help.
Dr. Van Dorn takes years to get to the point. We often spend the first 30 minutes talking about things that don't matter and then the important material is rushed through at the end. You definitely need to be prepared to ask for help and teach yourself most concepts in this class.
Great teacher, if you show up and pay attention you will do fine. Do the practice problems and the homework because that is where the test questions come from.
People say her tests are ridiculous, but in all reality if you come to lecture and look over all the material she gives you there is no reason not to pass. The averages are usually quite lower, so she will curve the class in the end. Would definitely take again.
Chemistry itself is a hard subject but she is awesome at explaining it. She is the best chemistry teacher I have taken. I liked her exams because if you know your material they shouldn't be tricky. YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS not just because she gives points at random days but because she does explain things well.
I honestly loved Dr. Van Dorn. She was always available to help and she actually teaches very well. Her class requires A LOT of work, but when it is done you will have a very sturdy foundation of Chemistry. I truly think she is one of the best professors I have ever had.
Chemistry itself is obviously not an easy subject, but I'm someone who has NO background/history of it what so ever, but in all honestly it wasn't as bad as I thought. If you attend lectures, do the home-works, and study. Then I guarantee that you'll pass. She's a little sassy but really helpful, and so are the preceptors and SI leaders.
Dr. Van Dorn made me become a chemistry major. Her CHEM 101 class gave me strong fundamentals in chemistry. She is passionate about the subject and it was inspiring to me. The class did require a good amount of reading and homework. Show up to class and ask questions if you got them. She appreciates participation and enthusiasm.
The material is very hard but Dr. Van Dorn teaches it so well and so passionately. You can tell she loves what she does and that she wants all of her students to do well. You can do well if you work for it and do the readings before class.
Very nice and caring as long as you care about the class. Go to office hours, getting to know her and letting her recognize you is so important.
I found this class to be extremely difficult. She says if you've never taken chemistry before you'll be fine, but I really struggled. There's a lot of options for getting help outside of class, but I was still constantly lost. She was funny but could also be a bit condescending towards students sometimes.
Van Dorn is very passionate about Chemistry but her class is really difficult. This is my third year of Chemistry in a row and it has been impossible for me to get a decent grade on a test. SI and preceptors barely help and the homework load is more than any of my other classes. Lectures are essential but a small portion are actually on the test.
You can tell she LOVES chemistry although her class is just very hard. She's not a bad teacher but you will put in 10x the amount of work for probably any other class. If you don't go to class, then you will not understand anything because the book is just confusing and she usually tries to clear things up.
She is an awesome lecturer, you can really tell she cares about chemistry and her students. There are a lot of resources if you are struggling, and if you do the work you will do well in the class. She doesn't take attendance, but you will likely not pass if you don't go to class because she covers/contextualizes other material.
I have never felt more dumb in my life. I went to tutor hours and studied nonstop for her exams but did poorly on all of them. Van Dorn is funny but she goes SO fast. I would blink & we would already be on another topic. The only good thing is she posts funny memes at the beginning of class and offers some extra credit. This class made me sad.
This professor is amazing! Her class is so intriguing. Just stay on top of the homework, look over the slides, make sure you actually understand the logic of the material and don't rely solely on memorization, if you do this you should do great! This class is a bit quick paced, so don't slack off. GOODLUCK!
Love Van Dorn. She makes it extremely easy to succeed and gives you all the necessary tools. Gives partial credit on tests which helped me a lot. Get 15-20% above average every exam average and you will for sure get an A.
She is a really good professor, especially for such a hard topic like chemistry. Participation is a huge part of your grade, so make sure to do participation activities. The class is hard due to it being chem, but she is a good choice. I passed with a C when I thought I'd fail - so that's good. I failed all midterms and final except the first test
Best. College. Course. Ever. Show up, participate, do the work, study hard, be known and take advantage of the (free) extra help. The grade you receive is solely the result of the effort you put forth. Difficult but NOT impossible. Dr. Van Dorn will absolutely knock your socks off with her brilliance, humor and pizzazz. You will not regret it.
Van Dorn starts the class by informing you that there will be a slight curve in the class creating a wonder of what your grade is all semester. She says placing above the average is usually a good thing. She also has a "complex algorithm" that calculates participation. Participation is based off learnsmart homework and "optional" study sessions.
Van Dorn is a nice person, but I disagree with her teaching methods. Firstly, she spends too much time referring you to her preceptors and puts WAY too much stock in them. We pay for a college education to have PhDs teach us, NOT undergraduates that are one year ahead of you. She also complains about people who ask her for help, which isn't nice.
Dr. Van Dorn has good intentions, but her teaching methods suck. She will spend 30 min out of a 50 min class on a "Your Turn!" I have taught myself everything by reading the online textbook. This class requires a lot of work. There are four homework's every week and an exam once a month, which are impossible.
I am going to miss this class so much! I did not think I could get an A until I figured out the best ways to study and she definitely provides you with all the resources, it just takes time and effort to keep up with reviewing the material. She was so passionate and I am going to miss it!!
This class is the hardest thing I have ever taken. If you get behind at all in the semester, YOU WILL FAIL EVERYTHING. My class was 98% pre-nursing students, and I didn't know anyone who got about 50% on any test. It will make you feel so stupid all semester. I ended up having mental breakdowns once a week and changed my major because of this class
I had never taken chemistry before and agree its one of the hardest classes. However after finding a study method that worked for me that included going to class ALL the time, doing the hw w/o looking at notes, reading from the textbook BEFORE class helped me ace 101B. 101A did not know how to study & still got B got all C's on tests, HUGE CURVE.
HARD but not impossible to pass with an A! 4 exams, reading quizes, online HWs due every Sunday 2 tries, random "print me's" @ the end of lecture notes, random quizzes, some EC . If you want to pass, READ everything, take notes, GO to tutoring/SI, weekly reviews and exam reviews DONT MISS CLASS, ASK Q's & STUDY. May the curve be ever in your favor.
Very funny and great teacher, very hard class, you need to study and work very hard to get the grades you want. She curves a lot and drops one test grade but is a very difficult class.
AVOID. Van Dorn is not at all concerned with her students' success. She is much more preoccupied with how much work she can get away with giving to preceptors instead of doing it herself. She teaches about 50% of the material on her tests- you have to Google the rest and learn it yourself before exams. Unclear, and not worth the tuition I pay.
Van Dorn is the best. She tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed and offers an abundance of resources. Do the readings, go to class, DO THE PPT EXAMPLES and go to SI sessions ! Most of the SI leaders have taken the class and they make practice problems similar to the test. It is a lot of work but me and all my friends got A's!
The class material is easy enough, but Van Dorn's teaching style is not. Makes students learn key concepts via their own research, later the concepts appear on the test. She has assignments that are hidden (not on syllabus or class) within powerpoints that she posts on D2L. Not bad at teaching, but seems that she lives for "gotcha!" moments.
Professor is not very accessible. Does not answer questions clearly. Relies heavily upon student aids to answer student questions. Rarely ever covers entire lesson in a given class. Exams are very difficult especially given lack of instructor guidance. Last exam, class average was 59%.
Van Dorn provides everything needed for you to pass and it is really up to the student's effort/capability if you do so. Attend SI, use preceptors, do all the work she gives you and you will pass. Makes many resources available, but does not spoon feed by any means. Can come off as rude, but it's really just the microphone.
Literally dont
people who say this class was easy or that they got an A are literally geniuses. This is the hardest class ever, and so is 101A. Plus Van Dorn is the only prof that teaches these classes at UA so if you need to take these classes, you have no choice but to take them with her. Also, I've been in 3 of her classes now and all SI's/preceptors SUCK.
if you put the work and effort into the class you will be rewarded with the grade you deserve. Van Dorn definitely knows what she is talking about.
Not an easy class, but not at all impossible. All the resources to succeed are available, but its up to you to use them. SI, preceptor reviews and worksheets, practice problems, and book problems will help you succeed. If you put the work in, you will get the grade you deserve. And dont be afraid to talk to her, shes really the nicest person!
Put in the work, take advantage of the various resources she provides and you will get the A.
Van Dorn is such a wonderful professor and truly cares about student success. Her lectures are easy to follow and she gives plenty of opportunities for extra resources. There is no unnecessary work in this class-- everything she has you do is for a reason.
Chem 101A was the hardest class I've ever taken. If you do not have a history taking Chemistry, or confidence in its fundamentals, I suggest taking the CHEM 100 Prep for College Chemistry. I very much wish someone would have told me there was a prep class before taking 101A. Don't let the course code fool you, this is certainly NOT a level 100.
Honestly, take this class at pima. Van Dorn is always rushed and it feels so overwhelming. I got a C in the class only because there was a curve from how bad the averages were. Took this at pima and got an A. Not nearly as stressful as Van Dorn made the subject.
I got an A in 101a and just finished 101b with unknown grade. I am not a "genius" like some people say you must be to do well in this class. To do well, and trust me I had a 72 average on chem101a tests and B on final and got an A in class do this: SI sessions (extra credit), print me (go to end of p.p.s) fight for small test points back, hw!
Dr. Van Dorn is so passionate about chemistry and teaching it. But you HAVE to put effort in if you expect to pass the class. Don't let the reviews scare you away. Take full advantage of all the resources she gives you because they really will help you. She wants to see you succeed. Be prepared to work hard and dedicate time to this class.
This class was well worth it! Dr. Van Dorn can seem intimidating, but I recommend going into her office hours, shes very kind. She knows her stuff, and is happy to work on concepts that you dont understand with you, which is really cool. You have to earn your grade and it takes effort, but there are many resources available for success.
Van Dorn is genuinely a fantastic professor. However, you have to work extremely hard for this class to go well for you. If you dont have knowledge of chem, youll have to seek additional resources. Theres a huge curve at the end whether she admits it or not. I wouldve failed otherwise.
This class is mostly geared towards nursing students, which is what makes it a little but more interesting. Having had taken chemistry in high school helped for only the first month after that it was all new material. Do not buy the textbook at the bookstore, its cheaper online and you can buy a physical copy too. You have to work for your grade.
This class is hard, there is so much to learn and whats worse is she only goes through half the lecture in class. The rest of the material would have to be learned outside of class and on your own. As a struggling student in chem I went to see Dr. VanDorn and she just made me feel stupid. She only cares if she knows you are doing well in class.
Don't confuse teaching for learning. Yes you MUST read and study hard. This is COLLEGE. If you plan to go to nursing school, you'd better not complain about this intro course. Dr. Van Dorn is cool and she teaches really well, but she can't be your personal tutor. There's lots of resources and extra credit offered. Listen in class, and go to SI.
I loved Dr. Van Dorn. She cares so much about chemistry and wants you to actually understand the material and not just spew it out on a test. You do need to try in this class and she does make it possible to get an A. YOU MUST APPLY YOURSELF OR YOU WILL NOT DO WELL.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. If your a nursing major go to another school for your pre reqs! GO TO A JC! YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS CLASS.
Van Dorn is very passionate about Chemistry. If you are taking this course, get ready for a lot of studying and homework due before every lecture. Actually read the sections she assigns, and you'll do just fine in the class. She teaches what you read the night before. The tests are also somewhat hard, but go over the lecture notes and study guides.
Do all the lecture notes and hw and you'll get an A. Most professors dont give you half as many resources as she does. I love Van Dorn, she really cares about everyone's success, but you dig your own grade if you dont try, you do have to study. Chemistry is a hard subject in general and I went in knowing nothing and came out having learned a ton.
If you do all the lecture notes, extra credit, all the readings, and go to SI meetings you'll do well. It sounds like a lot but it's not as hard as most science classes at UA, and most professors don't offer so many ways to study like Van Dorn does. You don't have to be a "genius" to get an A you just have to put in the work
I took CHEM101A over the summer at a JC and it was such an amazing experience. Dr. Dorn doesn't really care for you, she cares about chem and chem ONLY. She does provide lots of resources. You will have to do a lot of reading and ALWAYS check the powerpoints. I suggest if you come from a JC don't take this class. Just stay at a JC or finish at a JC
I'm not the type of person who loves chemistry, but Van Dorn definitely makes it easier. If you don't go to class her powerpoints can be confusing. As long as you do the extra credit and get the online assignments done you should be fine. Tests are CUMULATIVE. Study hard and attend office hours and SI sessions and you should do well
She is an amazing professor and explains everything, there are tons of opportunities outside of class to get help so people who did not pass did not take those opportunities. The class is hard, its chemistry, but she makes it manageable and makes everyone laugh every class. Her tests are cumulative, but usually similar to the study guide.
Dr. Van Dorn was one of the best professors at the UA. Eventhough I was horrible at chemistry she was still patient and caring towards students like me. She encourages you to work hard and succeed and she is very interested in her career choice. LOVE DR. VAN DORN SHES A GEM.
She is not good teacher. Chemistry is her passion however, her teaching skills are very poor. Exams are crazy difficult and this was my second time taking the course and going to preceptor hours. I also emailed her regarding the textbook never got a response.
Dr. Van Dorn is an amazing professor. You need to go to class and do your homework if you expect to succeed. However, she drops several homeworks AND A WHOLE EXAM SCORE. Also, there are numerous resources you can use to succeed. She is incredibly knowledgeable about chemistry. You have to work hard in order to do well, but it is entirely possible.
I would learn more reading the textbook than attending lectures. However, go to class because she sometimes hints at extra credit questions. I felt that rather than explaining the material, she restated what was on the slides and she ran through them way too fast. Although she is enthusiastic, I felt that she didn't explain things well.
honestly my favorite teacher at this school. she has a funny personality that keeps the class lively and she explains these difficult chemistry concepts in an easy to understand way!!
Laura's class is definitely a tough one. You really have to put in the work to get the grade you want, but overall she is a great teacher and knows the content very well. She makes the class fun by doing interactive experiments and offers lots of extra credit opportunities by going to preceptor hours and bonus exam questions.
Okay heres the REAL DEAL so listen up. Chem 101 A and B arent meant to be easy but Van Dorn could make it easier. If you have to take this go to AS MANY SI SESSIONS AS POSSIBLE. Go to lectures and try to keep up. Best of luck wildcats
Van Dorn is EXTREMELY passionate about chemistry, but she expects all of her students to be just as passionate about it. She rushes through lectures & makes you feel dumb if you dont understand things right away. Learned more from the book & SI leaders than from her, especially in 101B. GO TO SI SESSIONS that was the only way I passed this class.
She relies too much on SI and preceptors to teach the students. Her grading criteria is really unclear. She curves the overall grade for the class but no one knows how she does it. She gives you a lot of material to prepare for the exams, but the averages are consistently in the 50-65 range. If you want to succeed, go to SI and tutor hours.
I just wish I had an idea of what my grade were throughout the semester. You never really know what your ACTUAL grade is. Shes really smart but obviously there is not enough time to go over all the content you need to know, so you definitely have to put in the work. Im probably going to end up with a C but thats only because I didnt study enough.
Van Dorn is very knowledgeable about chem and does a very good job of explaining difficult concepts but she moves very fast through lectures, make sure to go to preceptor and SI sessions, you get extra credit and they further explained a lot, Shes a good teacher but you have to work very hard for the grade you want
she's literally amazing and I am confused about the bad ratings lol. she has made me so passionate about chem and if you work hard and go thru the notes after class this class won't be too difficult!!
This class is hard, and requires effort. But its a chem course, so that is to be expected. Theres a TON of resources outside of class that saved my grade. If you put in the work on the homework and don't miss lectures you can get an A. Van Dorn is super smart and passionate and makes sure you have everything you need for future chem classes at UA.
Really hard class but you learn a lot of great content. There is lots of help outside lecture and she is more than happy to meet with you during office hours to explain any material you may be confused on. Honestly, the effort you put into the classes will determine your overall grade.
DR VAN DORN IS THE BEST PROFESSOR! There are bad ratings on here, but she really cares that you understand chemistry if you show her that you are trying! There is a ton of extra credit if you go to SI sessions and if you go to her office hours with questions, she will make sure you can understand the concept!
Dr. Van Dorn is an amazing professor! I took her course without having a background in chemistry and still did well. It's not an easy class; prepared to read and do lots of homework. The material is difficult but there are preceptor hours and SI Sessions you can go to. It's not impossible to pass her class, you've just got to work hard.
I love this women, Dr. Van Dorn had such a large impact on my life. Her class is hard, but if you show up, put in the work, and laugh at her jokes, you will do just fine. She is intimidating and has a dad-like sense of humor, but it makes the class fun. Put in the work, go to SI and tutor hours, and study HARD. Dr. Van Dorn is a national treasure!
She is very passionate when it comes to her job, but it can definitely be overwhelming retaining a lot of information, but its duable. You definitely need to study if you want a good grade in the class, although the grading system isnt clear, and I dont even know what my final grade was for this class.
The hardest classes I have taken at the University of Arizona and I am confused as to why people are saying she is such an amazing teacher. She doesn't explain chemistry in a way that people who aren't chem majors would understand. And she makes you seem kind of dumb with how fast paced the lectures are. Wish I could say more but just don' take her
She doesn't teach any of the material and expects you to teach it to yourself. The class average for her exams is always in the 50s so that says the most about her as a teacher. DO NOT take this class if you care about yourself at all.
This is a chem class, the average for tests in any chem class is around 50-60%. You have to put in a lot of time to do well in the course. With that being said, Dr. Van Dorn is the BEST chem professor. She really cares about her students and wants you to succeed. If you need to take a chem class & you expect an easy A, youre in the wrong major.
Everyone giving bad ratings expected to have their grade handed to them. Its a chem course, its going to be hard. Van Dorn makes it super manageable! You will have to put in the work, go to SI and tutor hours regularly & youll get an A or B easy.
The homework load is unreal. I have put more work into this class than any other class ever. She will spend 30 minutes on a Your Turn! slide and about 30 seconds on test material. We stan a class average of 50%.
I love, love, love Dr. Van Dorn! This is the second course I take with her and they've been my favorites! Chemistry isn't easy, but she really does care about your learning and wants to see you succeed. She's hilarious and a really lovely person overall. As long as you work hard, there is no reason why you shouldn't get an A or a B.
To the review that said, "everyone giving bad reviews expects the grade to be handed to them," that is NOT AT ALL THE CASE. She is NOT accessible outside of class. She lets her TA's and Preceptors handle all the heavy work. One of those people who has a doctorate and acts like they are above everyone else because of it. No respect for her students.
This was by far the worst professor I have had. She doesn't teach anything and even when I try to teach myself, it is pointless because the tests don't match the study guides. I am considering dropping out because of the depression this class has given me. I don't even know what my grade is. She didn't even show support about the COVID transition.
Easily one of the best chemistry professors! There has only been one or two exams in both her classes that have had an average lower than 70%, and keep in mind we take four exams and one cumulative final in total. The class is very hard, but she tries to help as much as possible and provides lots of resources for us to use for our studying.
This class isn't easy, but the professor really knows her stuff. She can come off as a little scary at first, but she's super sweet and simply has a dry sense of humor. I took 151 last semester and I can say I preferred her class by far. The exams are hard but as long as you go to SI Sessions and reviews, you'll be fine.
Chemistry is an extremely hard class anyways, but Dr. Van Dorn is actually a really good instructor, I learned a lot from her lectures. The class and tests are extremely hard but if you put in the work it is attainable to get a good grade. The only complaint is that it can be hard to get into contact with her due to the size of the class.
Let me SAVE YOU, take chem at a community college!!! I took chem 101a at U of A and it was so so hard. Huge lecture class size, Van Dorn moves VERY quickly. I am now taking at a community college and have an A in the class and my class size is 19 people. I have never been more stressed than when I took this class it was absolutely TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!
Hear me out, there are worse professors and harder classes. However, anyone writing a positive review has genuinely no life because Van Dorn's lectures are very little teaching and central on "talking with a group" for over half the class. People that do well go to her SI which do help, but also suck up in her inconvenient office hours. Not good.
Van Dorn makes the class easy to pass if you TRY. She spends more time on certain subjects in the lecture if she sees our faces looking confused. She always posts her lectures with extra practice problems and sometimes extra credit you can apply on her tests. She always tries to do what is best for her students by consulting us and her preceptors.
Oh my godddd, I loved both of her courses. B is more interesting than A, but both are awesome. The material is hard but she provides more than enough resources for us to succeed. She's also super sweet and she really does care about teaching us the material. I wish she taught all of my other science courses (lol). Hands down, my favorite professor!
Absolutely awful. I've know had to retake both chem 101a and 101b with her. So extremely hard on grading. Take any other chemistry besides this one with her.
I have to retake this class because she doesnt care to help her students. Especially with the whole covid situation, she didnt give extra help whatsoever. She doesnt respond to anyones emails and youre pretty much on your own unless you consistently go to SI (which I dont think you should have to do to pass a class but for this its needed)
Dr. Van Dorn is tough, but fair. If you put in the work, you'll succeed. DO NOT: interrupt her lectures- she hates that. There are so many other opportunities to ask questions. DO: all the assigned reading/homework and attend lecture. SI Sessions count toward your grade, but she does have extra credit that makes up (point wise) for never going.
Not sure why people say Dr. Van Dorn cares about her students when she makes herself 100% inaccessible. She chooses SI leaders that run sessions, reviews, and office hours, a few do not explain content the same way as her or correctly in general. The content is not hard but she just does not explain things well, youtube videos work much better.
On the first day of class, she said "if you own a Mac Book you are stupid," and that was when I knew I was done. I stayed up every night studying and doing the homework and I ended up with around a 22% if my calculations were correct(you can't see if you pass or fail till the end of the semester) 2 weeks before finals, I withdrew.
Chemistry is NOT easy, but if you're a pre-nurs major theres not much you can do. Other Chem classes are even more material dense so content wise Van Dorn is the easiest. No she isn't the most helpful prof but the SI and tutor sessions help a lot. if u dont like science ur not gonna excel but its hard to get an A in any science class here
Dr. Van Dorn is the best professor I have had at the U of A! I had her for 101A and 101B and succeeded thanks to her and the help of preceptors in both courses. It is a tough course and you have to put a lot of effort in, but if you are going into a field of science that is to be expected. She is well respected and has lots of care for her students
Van Dorn really cares about her students. Three homework assignments per week, 4 exams plus a final. Offered two extra credit assignments. Tests are difficult but SI sessions help a lot.
to pass this class GO TO SI SESSIONS or tutoring provided!!!! THIS IS A MUST . I could not have passed without this extra help . Online lectures were very fast and at times confusing. Test are hard as well, but getting extra helps will make it better ! Mastering website for homework is very hard to use and made my cry many times! Good luck
STUDY STUDY STUDY if ur a pre-nurs major just WORK through it go to SI go to TUTORING this is NOT an easy class you gotta work for it. She's a bit unaccessible and rude but she'll curve some stuff if u need it. I got an A after several breakdowns but chemistry isn't easy in general
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. I'm usually a straight A student and I BARELY passed this class. The tests are very difficult. I studied for 8 hours and got a 50% with a curve AND open notes. The lectures were too fast and you have to rely on SI leaders for review and it isn't that helpful. Crying all the time is a fun bonus though! :D
This class is impossible to take online (bc of the pandemic) and it's NOT worth the multiple breakdowns. The website she uses is so difficult for Chemistry. She even said it herself that if you can't get the hang of the website then you'll struggle. Everything needs to be precise & you can only rely on the rude preceptors. Take chem at Pima!
I had professor Van Dorn online last semester and she just was not that great of a teacher. I got an A by pure luck I think I guessed on all tests and homeworks and made it out alive. I really recommend taking 101A at community college or finding a different professor because Van Dorn was definitely one of the poorer professors I have had.
Van Dorn was the absolute worst professor I have had at the U of A. She is horrible at responding to emails and when asking for help her response is to review your notes. Overall she is very rude and does not care about her students, don't recommend taking her class.
This was one of the hardest and most stressful classes I have ever taken. Be ready to STUDY and STUDY all the time! Her exams are extremely hard so make sure you prepare yourself as much as possible. I suggest just taking this course at a community college.
I would not recommend her at all. I took her Fall of 2020 semester and it was the worst class I have ever taken. She is not kind and doesn't care about her students. The tests are nearly impossible even if you study for days and countless hours. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!1
Not sure why people say she's inaccessible because she had office hours weekly and she'd answer all my questions. She has preceptors/SI leaders that have reviews weekly. The class isn't easy, but neither is chemistry. Makes you work for it, but is very nice and reasonable. If you think this is the worst, nursing school won't be any better.
LITERALLY TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO FAIL. SHE IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER AND MY GRADE WOULD HAVE BEEN WORSE IF I DIDNT CHEAT ON ALL THE EXAMS BECAUSE NOTHING FROM LECTURE, NOTES, OR THE REVIEW GUIDES HELPED. SHE SPENT SO MUCH TIME TALKING ABOUT MOLECULAR GEOMETRY AND THERE WAS ONLY ONE QUESTION ON THE TEST. SHE IS SO FAST IN HER LECTURES TOO.
I have pulled so many all-nighters this semester trying to understand the material. Please for the love of God don't take the class unless you absolutely have to. Chem130 is a new class this year, and I just don't think it's manageable at all. There is so much homework and she talks so fast in her lectures that I wasn't able to grasp the material.
If you can avoid this class, at ALL costs do it. This is actually O Chem and the worst class I've ever taken. The out of class work is insane and very time consuming. Her readings, study guides NEVER match the material on the exams and it is essentially a guessing game. She has gotten very rude in class and left class for weeks right before exams.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. she goes wayyyy to fast during lecture and homework is 30+ questions part a-e
I feel like I don't have the ability to learn in this class. No way of passing without the help of others, we all cry together on the GroupMe chat. Sometimes the chapters she leaves for hw do not help at all when doing the reading assignment.
Van Dorn is great but Chem 130 is an extremely difficult class to take. It is 2 semesters of material stuffed into 1 semester and because of this it is so fast paced and hard to keep up. If you don't understand any part of the lecture or don't do even one of the readings you will fall behind quickly. I never missed a lecture class, thankfully.
Don't waste your time on this class if you can avoid it. Prof talks too fast to absorb information, theres a ton of homework on a known to be terrible program, and her exam reviews do not match the actual exam. Try to take it through community college and transfer credits.
Please do not take this class it is literally so awful. maybe it's just because this is the first time they are trying it but she never makes sense, goes way too fast, and no matter how hard you study or how many tutoring sessions you attend you still will struggle. avoid at all costs, i regret taking this class so much.
Very challenging class but Professor had many opportunities for help. If you went to class, did the homework, and took advantage of other studying opportunities, you will do well in the class. Professor was very dedicated and made it clear she wants us to do well.
Dr. Van Dorn did the best she could with teaching this class for the first time. It was material heavy and very fast paced but there are plenty of resources for help outside of class. Don't necessarily have to attend lecture but if you miss one it is harder to make up in the end. 1 test is dropped along with a few homework and reading assignments
Professor did a great job of giving us the opportunity to do well by providing supplemental practice, readings, and lecture notes. Must practice problems a lot, and recommend taking good reference notes as the tests are open book but have a tight time-constraint. She cares and wants you to do well- just use the opportunity.
This class was a semester long and accelerated (basically a whole year of Chemistry into one semester). This class was by far one of the hardest classes I have taken. With no prior chemistry experience this class was very hard. This class is heavily dependent on exam grades/scores. I barely got by with a B due to a grade curve. STUDT STUDY STUDY!
Professor Van Dorn is a nice person but she is not a good teacher. Chem 130 was such a difficult class and if able please take another course. As well as Chem 130 is designated for pre-nursing majors and many people probably think that they did so well in high school chem that this class will be easy too. It is not.
Hardest class ever. She talks so fast you cant grasp the information given. Not to mention new topics are introduced with one minute left in class. She is a nice lady and wants you to do good but gets frustrated when you dont understand. Expects you to teach yourself a lot and its super overwhelming. This class was insane.
This class is incredibly fast-paced. This class covers general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. Lots of work must be done to grasp an understanding of the class. Dr. Van Dorn does want her students to succeed and does offer many opportunities for help. However, she was not good at answering questions or providing explanations.
She's really hard to understand and the assignments and tests often ask stuff that she never even mentioned. If you smoke 24/7, you have less chance of getting cancer than being in her class.
Worst professor ever. Had her for 101 and failed, so I had to retake this with hopes of getting Dr.Kelly. Van Dorn, however, combined 101 and 102 to make 130 and Dr. Kelly was out of a job. Not only is she rude, but makes you feel worse for asking questions. The tests were terrible. We excessively go over material not on the exam. AVOID!!!
Tough class, can see why it's considered a "weeding" class for the major. Make sure to take good notes, GO TO SI SESSIONS (cannot emphasize it enough), and review, review, review! It's doable if you make it doable.
The only reason I'm giving her a 2/5 is because she's a somewhat nice person outside he classroom. Lectures are very heavy, lots oh homework on the side too (takes me about 4-5 hours weekly). Tests are very difficult, honestly have never felt more lost in a class. If you can take another chemistry course, DO IT.
Understanding that this is chemistry which is a very hard subject, this professor taught it poorly. I would take notes and understand the lectures, but when I tried to recall the previous lectures, I couldn't. Her notes and PowerPoints don't have any useful notes on them, there's no room for mistakes, and her grading is too heavy on exams.
If this is your first chemistry class, good luck. Lectures go by so fast and its a lot of information being thrown at you. Make sure to go to SI's and office hours if you can. There is a lot of reading and homework, but it is somewhat manageable.
Not only does professor Van Dorn not teach at all, but she also does not answer questions. She reads off of a PowerPoint and doesn't actually teach. So much homework is given, and the assignments take about an hour each. The only hope of succeeding in this class is either getting a Chegg membership or going to the SI session consistently.
Dr. Van Dorn is a great professor. I promise if you do the reading, and keep up with the homework. You will be fine. Go to all the lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, but going to the lectures is the only way to pass. Go to the SI sessions she suggests and you will do good.
I loved Dr. Van Dorn. This is a hard course, it is lots of difficult and important content. As long as you attend all the lectures (she doesn't take attendance but you need the lecture information), take good notes, do the readings and homework, and ATTEND SI SESSIONS you will do great. This is a nursing weed-out class so be ready to do the work.
Need to go to lectures to succeed. 2 reading assessments and 2 homeworks per week. 4 tests and a final. Lecture is hard and fast but she needs to do that to cover the material. There is so much opportunity to get help and succeed so it is completely possible to do well in this class if you take initiative. Chemistry is hard no matter who teaches.
Very passive aggressive. She is super-fast when lecturing, you won't have time to let the information soak in and click. She was always nice to me but not nice to a lot of my friends. Her tests are hard and there is way too much hw. Good luck.
She is so passionate about chem. Attendance isn't taken but you HAVE to attend lectures to get a good grade. A few online assignments a week but if you do them with other people they aren't that bad! Go to her office hours! The tests are difficult but they are online, open book, and there is a little bit of extra credit.
If you have never taken chemistry prior to this class, GOOD LUCK. Attend lectures and read from textbook. Also stay on top of weekly assignments. She is work heavy and assigns multiple things to do a week. Take advantage of SI and reach out for help. She tends to cram content in too fast and likes to mention things once and think we understand.
Dorn is very passionate about chemistry and she knows a lot, however this class is really hard. This class moves very fast and it can be hard to keep up. Attendance for lectures isn't mandatory but go to save your grade. Go to SI sessions because even if you think you know the material you will question your knowledge on the exams.
Honestly just good luck and get Chegg. The first unit I felt kinda confident then it went downhill soon after. If you don't want to go to class just go to SI sessions you will get so much more out of it because she posts her PowerPoints online and in class all she does is read them. I will take my B because this class was a lot.
CHEM 130 is a difficult course so it's important to attend all lectures and take advantage of office hours and SI sessions offered. Dr. Van Dorn is very helpful and caring in her office hours and you can tell she is passionate about science, and wants you to succeed! This course is doable you just gotta take initiative. You got this!
She is an engaging lecturer but there is too much material to absorb. Material gets very hard and even if you attend SI sessions and attend every lecture and study a lot you will struggle. Tests are way harder than the study guides and practice problems. She does not give enough time to complete them, and they are most of your grade. GOOD LUCK.
Before this class I had never struggled in school or recieved a B. Although, Van Dorn is passionate about chem she is very condescending and cannot teach. The class is heavy on reading and hw, however your grade is based solely on how you do on the exams. Your only chance at passing the class is a chegg membership or attending every SI session.
This class is not attendance mandatory but if you miss lectures you will not understand what is going on. My biggest advice to get through this class is go to office hours!!! You will need to put in lots of extra time and effort outside of class but it is worth it. Van Dorn is honestly a good teacher the content is just really complex.
This class made me cry weekly. If you thought you did well in high school chemistry, think again. This class makes you feel stupid, and so does Professor Van Dorn. If I had the option to take this course again or drop out, I would drop out. Get Chegg, and get a tutor. The exams have no relation to her powerpoints, GOOD LUCK!!
The worst class I have ever taken (4 times to be exact)!!!! Van Dorn is not very good at explaining chemistry in a way that makes sense to people who have never taken it before. There are difficult and time consuming homework assignments due throughout the week, and most of the material is not discussed in class or on supplemental material.
Professor Van Dorn is great! You can truly see her love for chemistry shine through her lectures. She offers tons of extra credit on exams and just in general. The course itself is challenging- there is a lot of new content in a short amount of time and a decent amount of work weekly. But if you stay on top of everything, you will succeed:)
This class is definitely challenging, but it is doable. The work load is very heavy and you have to be prepared to put in a lot of extra time into this class. I would definitely recommend attending SI sessions and office hours!! Also go over what you missed on previous tests because the material WILL show up again.
GO TO SI SESSIONS!! They help so so much and the extra credit really helps your grade a lot (or at least for me). Her lectures are PACKED with information so I always had my phone camera ready because the slides are beefy and she goes through them super quick.
The mastering homework is heavy and challenging in this class. Overall Van Dorn is very rude. If you ask a question in class she will simply laugh at you and question why you would ask such a stupid question. Go to the SI session if you want to survive and KEEP UP WITH THE WORK fr. Some ec was offered if you go to SI's but overall very hard class.
I went to every lecture and 3 SI sessions a week and nothing helped. Personally it went too fast for me and I am having to retake the class next semester, so you might as well take Chem 151 and 152. She is also a very rude person and every time someone asked a question she would just laugh and make them feel stupid for not understanding it at first
This 3 credit lecture can easily equate to 6 credits of work if you want to do well in the course. Super hard tests, but if you go to SI sessions 1-3 times a week and set yourself up with a tutor you should be okay. I would recommend taking only 12-15 credits while enrolled in this class if you want to be successful, the work will overwhelm you.
Dr. Van Dorn wants her students to succeed but she moves so fast-paced you can barely take notes. Her tests are SO unbelievably hard. She also makes you feel stupid when you ask a question. I wouldn't take this class if you have a full schedule. I did tutoring with Ph.D. Pharmacology students were in disbelief of how difficult this class was.
Good teacher but just goes way to fast to even understand the content. The exams are so confusing with material that is ahead of what we learned in lecture. Chem Lab is easy but lecture.. I found it to be challenging. I still don't know if i'm going to pass, by the time the homework grades go in I probably already enrolled again into chem.
Decent teacher but she went too fast and ran out of time so I ended up having to learn on my own. I recommend going back to the posted notes and going over practice problems. Definitely go to supplemental instructions because they are the reason for my A. Study at least a week before each exam and watch all supplemental videos and you'll do well.
If you do not constantly try or get help in this class, it will be harder for you, but the professor and TA want to help you as much as possible. A lot of homework but the exams are open note and online but the exams have questions that use critical thinking. The professor also has extra credit assignments and questions on the exam.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Class grade reflects how much effort and time you put in. It's not impossible to receive an A. Put in the work and you will do fine!
If you are like me, coming from not taking a single chemistry course since sophomore year of high school. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!! I loved high school chemistry, but this course was a different monster. Van Dorn's lectures are crazy fast and hard to follow. Topics we took a singular day on, the full-year class would take weeks. Take the full year.
honestly , this class is a symbol of the work you put in , is the work you get out. go to SI sessions, her office hours are the best just go even if you have nothing to ask, you will learn so much from them. just pay attention in class and do not do too much writing just listen to her and pay attention.
As a pre-nursing major, I would not take this class. If you find chemistry easy, then take this class. Dr. Van Dorn is a dedicated educator, eager for her students' success, but her course material is notably challenging and requires significant effort to master. I had to seek help from resources not offered on campus, and that was quite pricey.
If you have a background in Chemistry you will do a lot better. This class isn't impossible, but you need to study everything, it all builds on top of each other. There is some extra credit, but you have to go to a lot of SI Sessions that I didn't find particularly helpful. The TA, Andy is the nicest person ever.
This course is hard af but amazing professor. I enjoyed the way she taught but you can get lost very fast. The TA's held review sessions but they sorta..sucked. Tests were taken from home but hard and not very much time to write stuff out, somehow passed through with a low B. Review lectures after lectures and just try to retain the stuff you learn
This class gave me depression
this class also gave me depression.
Honestly, this is one of the hardest things I had ever had to do. Everything is just so difficult and fast paced. If you can take this elsewhere, like a community college in the summer, DO IT!!!
This class is very difficult, but I found the first half of the semester managible because I took Honors Chem in high school. The professor wants students to succeed and offers a lot of SI and office hours. The worst part about this class is the coursework, there is a lot and it can be difficult to understand.
This course is not as bad as it seems, it was quite manageable. Dr. Van Dorn was very caring and a great lecturer, I found the lectures super clarifying after doing pre-readings. I do suggest going to every class and trying your best. If you study, do all homework, and pay attention you can get an A. There are so many resources for this course too!
Has to take this class 2 times, if you want to cry and suffer daily take it. She does care for students but she is not a good teacher. I really recommmend buying chegg for the homework. Most of the final grade depends on exams and her exams are BRUTAL. I would never recommend this course to anyone it was a living hell, so take chem 151 and 152.
Dr Van Dorn was a good professor! I was also taking other science courses last semester. Her participation was unclear because you use TopHat for the participation and your graded on correctness for participation rather than if you're in class or not. Her quizzes were online but in the classroom throught top hat,you only have 25 minutes to complete
I had to take this class two times and it seems like a lot of people had to as well. She is a fast teacher and doesn't go over topics well. But a lot of practice problems on slides. Very heavy course work, 2 homeworks and quizes per week and multiple readings. Hard to keep up with material. Gives extra credit, will not curve final grade.
CHEM130 with Professor Van Dorn can be challenging, but staying on top of the workload and using resources like unstuckstudy ai can help. The class has a lot of content, but attending lectures and completing assignments diligently can lead to success.
You are graded on accuracy on participation using TopHat. Go to office hours especially during lewis structures. This class is general chemistry and organic chemistry into one course. She was a great professor.
She speaks so fast and expects you to do all of the readings and understand what she is going over before you get to class. She is a nice person but does not give much detail during lectures.
This is one of the best professors I've had. She gets a lot of hate on here because the course is difficult. This class has a ton of support between SI and preceptors. 2/3 of the grade is exams+quizzes. Do not get behind. The content you learn will be applied to future content throughout the entire course. If you apply yourself you will do well.
Do the readings, learn along the way, and get help when you need it because cramming doesn't work here. It's a large workload since there's a lot of material, so professor Van Dorn moves very fast. Her exams are also ridiculously difficult compared to the homework and reading assignments, but this class is doable if you put in the effort.
Van Dorn was a really great teacher and wanted the class to do really well. She provided lots of extra credit opportunities and had tons of out of class session with her or TA for extra support. There was a good amount of work that was done throughout the course but it defiantly helped and was not busy work. In lectures she was fun and motivated!
Although CHEM 130 is a HARD class as long as you put the work in and GO TO office hours, preceptor hours, and SI sessions!!! You will do good, you just have to be able to ask for help when you need it. Take advantage of all the extra credit and SI points, it does make a difference! You got this!
Dr. Van Dorn was awesome, if you put in the work its easy to pass!
You might need a tutor for this course. The SI sessions could help but they are always packed with lots of students.
Dr. Van Dorn is a great professor! People give her a bad rap because the material is challenging, even though it is a difficult class, it is very possible to succeed if you put in the work! Give yourself time for the readings, go to preceptor hours and SI sessions, and you will do great! Tip: If you can do the study guide, you can ace the exam!!!
This class is challenging, but you can do it if you have the discipline and motivation! She lectures well but fast. The exams are quite challenging compared to the quizzes but passable. If you show up, review, and make a good "cheat sheet" you'll do fine. Go to SI for extra credit! Tip: Use "ketzbook" on youtube during lewis structures.
The class is just hard. Van Dorn is amazing but there is so much content squeezed into one semester. It is hard to get into contact with her as the class is huge but honestly if you put your head down and work you'll be fine! I clearly didn't do that!
Dr. Van Dorn is a great professor, the class is just hard. Those who say she sucks just didn't put in enough effort into the class. She provides tons of extra help outside of class, and take advantage of the extra credit, it could be the difference between a whole letter grade. You get out of this class the effort you put into it.
Dr. Van Dorn is a very caring person and she tries to make chemistry as easy as she can. You can tell that she really enjoys teaching it. It's extremely easy to fall behind so show up to all lectures and utilize the SI session extra credit because it can make a whole letter grade difference. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions during lecture.
ive never felt as stupid in my life as i did taking this class. that being said, its doable and ur grades are a reflection of the work u put into it. her exams and quizzes are brutal but she allows a page of notes so it could be worse.
This class is difficult, but Van Dorn provides A TON of sources to help you succeed. GO TO SI SESSIONS AND HER OFFICE HOURS. I honestly didn't study at all, but worked really hard to comprehend all the material, and that was the most important thing. Van Dorn is an amazing person and brings candy to her office hours. She is literally Ms. Fizzle IRL
Chem 130 is truly the hardest class nursing students have to take. However, I believe Van Dorn was the reason I did so well. Her lectures, quizzes, and exams were hard but it never felt like she wanted us to fail, she only wanted to challenge us. There are AMPLE resources to succeed in this class such as tutoring and office hours.
I loved Dr. Van Dorn!!! She really cares about her students and that they understand what they're learning, and she has made chemistry so much more attainable. I love how you can feel not only her passion for chemistry, but her students as well. There is also so much help available, so as long as you want to put in the effort you'll succeed!!
She is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had, but the class is just hard. Her lectures are very good but to get a good grade you need to attend class and learn on your own outside of class. You should be able to get a B or higher if you do that and attend the SI session which are very helpful and give you extra credit. Test are hard though
Dr. Van Dorn is a great professor if you get to know her. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS and go to SI sessions, if you work hard you will be successful. She lets you use one note sheet. Exams can be hard, but you can pass. Just ask for help before you get lost!
Although Chemistry is a tough class, it is totally doable. Van Dorn was the best professor possibly given for a class like this. She offers plenty of extra credit, is super caring for her students and want you to succeed. She's funny and tries to make lectures as interesting as possible. Definitely try taking her class if you have to take Chem 130
You can tell she is very passionate about Chemistry. This course is VERY hard, do not take this if you do not need to. Her lectures are great and even though attendance is not mandatory, you WILL be behind if you do not show up. There are also surprise top hat quizzes. If you do take this class, go to SI session!!
As a pre-nursing major, this was the easiest science prereq. There are 2 exams, 3 quizzes (one dropped), a final, and you get a cheat sheet for each. She offers a lot of extra credit (32 points). I barely did the readings and just watched Organic Chemistry Tutor and it helped me succeed on all the exams.
She rarely showed up to class in person, she was almost always online but still gave participation points in class. It is a lot of information packed into one semester. She doesn't explain very much, she wants you to read at home and come to class knowing the information. Her lectures are filled to the brim with practice problems.
Van Dorn did most of the classes on zoom which is fine but I found that she hardly explains thing fully. She also gives a lot of homework and reading that must be done before lectures. Exams are hard, quizzes are easy. Another thing that bothered me was that her practice exams/study guides are very outdated and don't actually match the curriculum.
This class can be difficult, but she is an amazing professor. She is very passionate about chemistry and will provide a lot of extra credit opportunities!
She is a good professor, kind lady but the class is just really hard. I got mainly C's on the exams and quizzes but still ended with an A in the class. STUDY STUDY STUDY and DO the extra credit, attend SI and the TA is pretty good too.
Dr. Van Dorn definitely shows her enthusiasm for Chemistry in the way she teaches. She did everything in her power to help students understand concepts. Lectures are very fast-paced, but the amount of resources provided through SI sessions and preceptors are very helpful. Tests are difficult but doable.
I really liked this class! She genuinely loves what she teaches, and she lectures super super well. If you go to lectures and take advantage of the immense amount of extra credit opportunities she gives, you will have no trouble getting the grade you want.
Dr. VanDorn was a good professor. I got C's on both exam and still ended with an A. EXTRA CREDIT MATTERS! Seriously go to SI sessions, and do any extra credit opportunity you can. The TA is amazing too! She truly cares about her students and is so sweet! Study hard, and just breathe, because it isn't that bad.
Ppl only give her a bad rating bc the class is hard. Dr van dorn is an exceptional professor and if u put in work u can pass
