Had her for 3 of my math classes & I do not regret it. I was NEVER good at math, but she allowed me to learn the way I needed to, and I am so grateful to have had her. She gives very good lectures and takes her time with students to help everyone proceed as a class. Please don't hesitate to take her, she is an amazing teacher & truly does care.
So helpful and breaks down the problems for you, she teaches you quick tricks and methods into solving the problems. Her lectures are usually long especially if you have one section she tries to drag it out to make it clearer for everyone. overall is the best math teacher at OCC
She's really nice! She tutors on the weekends for the people that need help! Her tests are easy only if you study for them. She is helpful and nice. I would re-take her class again and I recommend you guys choose her as your math professor!
Be prepared to teach yourself a lot of information on your own and be ready for hours of homework a night.
Expects you to learn on your own. Acts as if she doesn't have time for anyone and gets annoyed easily when you ask her questions that are obvious to her but may not be to you. Very hard grader. Teaches as if she wants you to drop. Do not recommend whatsoever.
I have always struggled at math, none of it ever made sense to me, to the point where I feared I wouldn't be able to get my degree because of it. Laura made it so easy! Her style of teaching just made it finally click and make sense and now math has become my favorite subject! there is homework every week and test after 2 chapters.
I have taken professor wicklund for all of my math classes at OCC. she is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. she comes in on Saturdays (even though she doesn't have to) to help students with math at the tutoring center. her notes/lectures are amazing. she posts notes online but it you should definitely show up to class. very friendly
She was fine. She also always met with students on Saturdays or Sundays
TAKE HER!!I have taken her for 3 different math classes, and I would take her for more if I could. Tries to make sure every student understands the material and can teach it in different ways to help understand. Also offers extra credit. Understanding the material is more important than an easy A.
Wonderful teacher! She created her own Lecture Note packet that she goes through in class, explaining everything in detail. Her teaching style is to-the-point and easy to follow along, which is great for students who struggle with math (like myself). Only downside: she was never on time and 5-10 mins late to every single class, including exam days!
Professor Laura is an amazing math teacher! Clear grading criteria, extra credit opportunities and good lectures. She uses a green book to practice math problems, very helpful when you have to study for exams. 3 exams + Final, extra credit, and homework done in MyMathLab. Take her!
Had Laura for two Algebra classes, after failing one of them twice before. (1150) She saw that I was struggling and offered to help me after class and on the weekends. After a few sessions, everything clicked and I went on to do well int he class and thoroughly understand the material now. Best teacher that I've had so far, plus she's hot. lol
It wasn't an easy class that's for sure. A lot of hours spent during the weekend, and evenings in order to be on track during her lectures. She is fast and you might have to spend a lot of time in the tutoring centre in order to understand. If you spend the time, she gives you everything you need to have good grades, but it will be intense !
She's ok. I wouldn't take her again. she's a tough grader on exams and bearly offers any extra credit. She also gives out so much homework. So glad I didn't take her for 1100
She cares about her students and helping them succeed.
Lovin her class so far! Great teacher. Clicks to me so easily with the way she explains. One thing I love is how she has the class work on problems and she walks around to check how were doing. Failed this class by a previous teachers and was blamed for not doing the material when I tried hard. Incredible how much of a difference the teacher makes
By far the worst professor I have taken. I am a transfer student OU and took this class at occ thinking it would be less difficult. She is one of the HARDEST grading professors on exams I have had and when you ask her a question she acts as if there is no time to explain it. Dont take her especially with a 8 weeks class. Save yourself the money
TOUGH GRADER. There are quizzes EVERY single day of class worth 12.5 pts and hw that takes 3 or more hours to do for every chapter. Considering it is an 8 week class, I though she would be more lenient towards grading, but WRONG. She talks to fast and will not elaborate on anything. Basically teach yourself type of class. A 70 is passing, good luck
Unbelievable amounts of homework required. She does not explain things well and essentially you end up teaching yourself. This is not a case where you can do all the homework and extra credit, study and get an A. She tries to make it very difficult to get an A.
Just dont.
Crazy amounts of hw (plan on 6+ hrs of hw a week). Very rude and does not care to elaborate on what she teaches. Tough grader on exams. If there is another prof teaching this class please choose them.
Dont take her. She made what should be an intro to mid level class everyone needs to transfer into a huge headache. 6+ hrs of hw a week and mark's down constantly for silly little things on test. Loved to put things on test that were on 2 hw problems we didn't do in class making tests even more stressful. She teaches to fail shoot for a C....
She gives a crazy amount of homework a week and makes it very hard to pass with anything above a C. More than half of the class had to drop.
This professor managed to get probably around 40% of the problems on her notes wrong. What an absolute embarassment. I don't understand how she is even considered a professor at this point, she can't even get the notes right.
i don't know how we are supposed to do the test without a calculator and she gets most of the questions wrong.
she is one of those instructors who are existed to destroy your grades. i don't know how she is a tough grader and she doesn't know how to solve her own notes!! very embarrassing
Doesnt know how to teach
This is one of the worst classes i have taken at OCC. The homework and tests are SO much harder than what is taught in class ! There is very little textbook use and LOT of homework! I felt like this class could have been more organized, she often forgot to put the homework online, grade tests or take attendance. Overall, i would no recommend her
I took Mrs. Wicklunds hybrid intermediate algebra class. It has been so nice to do the work on my own time. She makes it super easy to get your work done. I go to class about two hours a week and do the rest at home. She is by far the best math teacher I have had! She helps you understand the math easily. Best teacher and class!
She is a great professor. The class is a bit difficult but she really helps you through it and helps you understand the material.
If you struggle with math and actually want to learn, also want to be successful, then Laura W. should be you next teacher if not your 1st. My only issue with Laura is that she only teaches math. Laura is a true asset to her employer and goes the extra mile, thus if you put the time in your results will be strong.
Math is very very hard for me and she helped me alot and me the confidence and encouragement to keep going no matter what.
You wont regret taking Wicklund! I personally struggle with math, but she explained everything really well and I did great in her class.
Wicklund is an amazing math professor. She loves math and wants you to understand it in many ways. If she teaches another math lever, I will take it with her again.
Professor Wicklund was an awesome professor! she gives many extra credit opportunities and makes sure you understand the material clearly. She goes out of her way to even meet on the weekends for tutoring before and after tests. I wish she woud teach 1100 because i would definitely take her again!
She does a great job of teaching the material!
Very good instructor
Was very disorganized, showed up 10 minutes late to class every day. Was slow grading, and responding outside of class, along with posting homework late. was not allowed a calculator for some assignments and testes. while others in the same class where if they had a differnt professor.
Very slow grading, did not know my final grade before taking the final. Feedback on quizzes/ tests was not useful and did not match up with lectures and not organized. Overall, I do not recommend this prof for Calc2.
Professor Wicklund was fantastic and I enjoyed taking her course. It was a hybrid course but then moved completely online due to SARS-CoV-2. It wasn't an easy A unless you put in the work and showed up to class ready to participate. She was very clear in her lectures and very willing to help. Would definitely recommend her to an incoming student!
I don't know why any of these ratings are good. do not listen to them. do not take her if you are taking an online class with her. her online lectures are horrible she just says what she is writing down with no explanation. offers no extra credit either and is very rude and disrespectful to her students.
She gives off the impression that she gets a power trip from the toughness of her class. Instead of relying on her for help, she expects you to go to your tutor, and YES, the 6 1-hour tutoring sessions are mandatory. She takes about 3 days to reply to emails, and is extremely condescending. If you struggle with math, don't take her class.
I have never been a math person, but this class helped me feel confident. If you read your textbook, attend office hours, and get study, you will succeed. Prof Wicklund was amazing, and the practice exams are SUPER helpful. If you put in the work, you will pass. Plus she gives EC if you attend tutoring. Undesirable grades arent her fault.
Great teacher, great class! I almost think it should be mandatory with the (life) lessons learned regarding finances. The majority of the lessons are easy to understand because shes very thorough. Zoom attendance was not mandatory. Homework was (but its not bad). She also doesnt make assumptions about what you may/may not know going into this.
MAT-1070 is Business Mathematics. It was 100% online. She required you to watch her recorded lectures and copy down the notes exactly as she was doing. You were required to attend tutoring 6 times. There were 4 projects. Learned a lot from the projects. Real World stuff: stock market info, mortgages, credit cards, mark-ups, discounts.
Only take her class if you enjoy suffering. She assigns 1-2 hours worth of lecture videos and a packet with them, 3 huge homework assignments, and a 2-hour live lecture EVERY WEEK. On top of this, you are required as part of your grade to attend 6 one HOUR tutoring sessions. Her online class is misleading. Still will make you come to campus!!!!!
you have to take 6 mandatory tutors per semester. awful
We had to copy her notes exacting as written and submit the hw and post hw every week. Her study guides did not follow all of what was going to be on the test. She gives too much hw and not enough tests. If the tests were broke down into smaller sections it would have been more manageable. If you are busy with 2 or more classes do not take her.
Ugh this class was way too much, it seemed like the overall grade was revolved around exams/midterms. Theres 4. If ur not a good test taker I wouldnt recommend this professor. Hw pts were worth so little points, she is not understandable, takes pts off the littlest things, tests are hard, doesnt match the study guides. Overall she wants u to fail
The grades are based mostly from 5 tests. The homework was long, and certain problems stumped even experienced tutors I worked with. The review for the final exam was unhelpful. She grades tests extremely hard and has no curves. If available, take Professor Aydeh Selameh. She has a 5 star rating on here and is extremely helpful.
Only take this class if you want to fail
-Difficult to access, takes 3 days for email responses -Assigns excessive amounts of homework, all of which is extremely difficult & only tangentially related to the lecture videos -Fails to explain the class material in a coherent and simplified manner -Rude and cold over email -Grades to an extent that makes it nearly impossible to do well
This professor does have a power trip over the unnecessary difficulty of this class. Was given 2+ hours of assignment work a week for 7 weeks with a total value of 50 points out of 600. Simple things were not provided like answer keys, making it hard to review. God forbid you email her a question, She will be cold. Ridiculous grader.
Avoid this teacher at all costs. She does NOT care about students and her grading is very harsh. It unfotunatelty is very difficult to pass this class. Try your luck with any other teacher!!!!!
Please take this message seriously. DO NOT TAKE this professor. She is a very cold individual and her curriculum is designed to fail students. Exams are graded very harshly and she expects her students to do everything exactly like her. Stay away!
Professor Laura Wicklund's lecture videos throughout the on-line course are easy to hear with her clear voice. The key to reaching the finish line is to ask questions, work proactively, take help & guidance available from Professor Wicklund, & tutors to share this 50+ year young's feeling of gratitude, gained math & life skills. - IreneK.
Professor Wicklund's lectures were clear to understand, and her class took us from basic math to calculating mortgages, interest rates. Grateful for her guidance, feedback, help, and direction as this 50+year old student gained business math/life skills s/a teaching us about stock market, small businesses tips, types of loans/interest, & more!
Really nice professor. She knows her stuff and makes the best notes for her courses. The problems on the notes and homework are much easier than those of the exams so beware. I do not recommend taking this class online. I feel like I would've learned a lot more in person and received a better score. Would recommend and take again just not online.
Stay away if exams aren't your friend, the grade structure has them weighted at essentially 90%. I've never struggled with a class this much before and I've never had such a terrible experience with a professor. She is incredibly cold, unhelpful, and vindictive, and seems to want you to fail unless you do everything exactly her way. Truly terrible.
Professor Wicklund was accommodating when I was clueless, and supportive when needed. The material provides step-by-step instructions and is straightforward. I was able to contact her after office hours via email when I was unsure of an assignment. She responds in a timely manner, and you will learn a great deal of beneficial information.
After my last HS math class, taken over 40+ years ago, Professor Laura Wicklund inspired me to "push myself", so I did, with all tools she provided, of clear weekly instruction, tutorial help as needed, and weekly Zoom meetings. Thanks to professor's success formula & honesty, I am grateful for learning important math & financial life skills.
We were given recorded lectures and they were thorough and detailed. Many times Ms. Wicklund reviewed concepts in order to instill the lesson. It was very helpful. This was an online class.
Great math professor! She explained math problems better than any teacher/professor I've ever had. I really enjoyed this class and learned a lot.
Inaccessible, poor teacher. She's good at math, teaching just does not seem to be her calling, this could have just been a bad class for her but I wouldn't recommend taking her.
This professor is okay. The negative thing about her is that she is extremely picky about things on her tests. She makes great lectures videos each week. This class is very hard so make sure to take good notes. Overall it was an okay experience with this professor
just about ruined my summer. got tutors, did notes, watched videos, and the tests still made me feel like i learned nothing. multiple people i know failed this class.
I always forget to rate past profs...BUT Laura was by far my favorite professor to this day! Extremely intelligent in the field of Mathematics. She was also very kind and understanding, especially when I had covid twice in the semester... Honestly, complete your homework and pay attention and you will do great!
How much money did I waste to take a class that is this disorganized? Not a single exam, hw, or assignment is graded 7 weeks into the course. Says she grades "tough" but how would we know. Class is listed as M W 10 - 11:30 but lectures actually often go to 1pm. Does not post recordings for days. I have a full time job. 4 hour midterm.
Calc 3.Disorganized waste of money. Not one thing graded 7 wks into course. Reminds us she grades "tough" but how would we know? Class is M W 10-11:30 but regularly goes to 1pm. Does not post recordings for days. I have a full time job. 4 hour midterm. Requires students to copy her work verbatim for credit. Difficult homework unrelated to lecture.
Took this class last summer. This class was brutal. Prof gave long hw webassigns, the resources/videos given were okay at best, midterm was super harshly graded. Lost almost all points for a simple error. Dropped the class immediately after. I would suggest taking a different professor for this class.
I am finishing her accelerated MATH 2740 course now and found that despite it being an intense 7-week class, Laura consistently found time outside of class to meet with students/ host reviews over the weekend and find ways to support our goals. Teaching students calculus online must be challenging but ultimately she lectures well and grades fairly.
Assumes you already know the back material for this class. While I liked the online lecture videos, the homework and tests were not the same. Tests are required to be in person and is extremely nit picky on small details on homework, notes and tests. Luckily this was the only math class I had to take so I could get a c- worst case but I got a B+.
She is not a good professor to take for Calculus 3, especially if you need vector calculus for a future course. The notes provided were lackluster, lectures were dry, and she was not timely with posting materials/lectures. Grading is somewhat picky and the final exam had a mistake on it which we had to correct.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. I worked so hard and still had to withdraw from the class because she offered no help. She showed up 15 minutes late to the first exam and didn't even apologize. Do NOT take a class with this professor.
I enjoyed her class. She held optional zoom meetings that no one regularly attended. It was nice to basically have a private tutor. Told what problems to study for the exams. Recommended students get tutoring, though she explains things thoroughly so it's not necessary. Take the practice exams multiple times and you'll do fine.
By far the hardest math teacher I have encountered. And for no reason!!! So picky about notation that it overshadows actually teaching the content in a way that people understand. Very dismissive of people's concerns with content and understanding it. Would not recommend her.
Was amazing for this class understood everything in this class. Would take again!
She has two parts for quizzes which is confusing. Wants everything in her way in class and on the test. On a postivie note is available outside out of class hours if you need help.
I had Professor Wicklund for two semesters now and I have nothing bad to say. She does all the notes in class, step by step, then the homework is very similar to the notes. She gives you multiple reviews for every quiz/exam, so you go in prepared. If you show up to class, follow along with the notes, and do the homework, you will do perfectly fine.
My poor testing ability really tanked my grade. A lack of ability that was compared to golf skills and belittled to just blaming it on me not studying enough although she checked all my notes and praised my feedback during class. SO FRUSTRATING and a complete overload of homework, avoid avoid AVOID!
I have nothing against her as a person and I am sure she is a lovely teacher in-person, but online it is either her way or the highway. I would not recommend for anyone trying to get back into math after a decent break. Look for a teacher that is more flexible to other ideas and teaches broader concepts in algebra.
I do not recommend taking this professor for any class. She doesn't know how to teach, she easily gets offended, doesn't care about her students and takes forever to grade the homework/tests. it takes weeks for her to grade everything, you never even know what your grade is. Class is test heavy, with no resources to help at all. I do NOT Recommend
I am a decent math learner and had previously taken this course prior to transferring. I was told to retake this course as a refresher and I failed due to her harsh grading criteria! She only wants it done in her methods and anything else will be marked down! You do 5+ hw assignments only for the test to be completely different. Please avoid!!
Stay away from this professor. I don't know anyone in our class who passed. As someone with calculus knowledge, I have no idea how she can teach.
Calc 2 is a hard class and it doesn't help that Professor Wicklund is the professor. Of course OCC won't do anything about it because they can't. It doesn't matter if you go out of your way to try and ask prof Wicklund for help because she won't.
All I can say is stay away. Even if she's the only professor.
I really applied myself and tried passing her class; that was no help because she doesn't care for her students. Simple mistakes on exams (which are ~75% of your grade combined) would result in most points taken off. Notes are graded based on if you copied her to the T. Please stay away and avoid. I have never taken such a careless professor.
STAY AWAY FROM MS WICKLUND!!!! I had her for Calc II as a dual enrollment student, and it was the most difficult class I've ever taken. We had no tests or quizzes, just a practice midterm (which was worth no points or extra credit) and a midterm and final, which were very heavily weighted. She won't even help if you ask for it, she doesn't care.
I do not recommend. Instructor was very strict on grades. Mess one part up, but still got the correct answer?, you lose a point. Help is nonexistent either. Tests are all online, but uses invasive proctor software to take over your computer. If you struggle with math concepts, I would advise seeking another instructor.
I tried explaining all the reasons why she is a bad professor but i blew past the 350 character limit so take my word for it and legit go with any other professor for this class
no guidance in teaching. hard to follow instructions and doesn't do into detail. not recommended
Professor Wicklund gets a bad reputation based on the classes she teaches. Calc II is a HARD class no matter the professor you have. You need to show her that you want to learn. I asked questions in class and always went to the optional reviews, she rounded my final grade up a whole letter. Do ALL the homework for Calc II, no matter the prof.
My whole time taking Prof. wicklund, I went to another math professor who was teaching the same class at the same time. I can attest that the character the wicklund portrayed should not be acceptable in any learning environment. Her “prove yourself” negative attitude reflects her high fail rate. Numbers don't lie
Yo gang I kid you not, I passed the 350 word limit but she's a horrible teacher, she will not help you if u need help, very strict on grading, and has a bad attitude she needa get that fixed ngl
Her lectures are recorded and the hw is just doing the worksheets which is easy. However, she has 2 online and the midterm/final in person exams. Anytime you ask for help she has such an attitude and accused me of cheating on the online exam when did NOT cheat and showed my table in room scan. She accused me of lying and didnt grade my exam.
Choose a different professor is a horrible class. I tried to reach out to understand better but all I got was a link to tutoring. I have to take 2 tutoring sessions a week to understand what is going on in the class. The notes that she makes you do yo have to copy them to a T I mean you have to write down everything that she does in the videos.
This class was difficult for no reason. I'm okay with taking notes for Prof. Wicklund, but taking another set for Prof. Preisler felt like wasted time and unnecessary since it's the same material. The silver lining was that online assignments had automatic extensions that you could get another week for.
She's really slow to grade and late to almost every meeting. Not counting week 1, she was on time maybe twice. You also lose tons of points for not copying her videos EXACTLY as she does them. On the bright side, she's actually great at explaining concepts. I found her explanations to be very easy to grasp and appreciated them quite a bit.
