Very Knowledgeable, enjoys the subject. Expects a lot from her students, but not unreal expectations
She is the worst, she likes the subject but she goes extremely hard for no reason especially in her level 100 classes, not reccommended at all
Let me tell you, I am a history major and I was really excited to take Roosevelt to Reagan, but she was horrible. I ended up with a C+. Her book reviews were graded as if you were a graduate student and so were the tests that were essays. Only thing good: she lectured well.
Honestly awesome professor. She expects a lot, but that makes you want to work harder (anyone who says otherwise is just lazy). She's clear, she obviously loves the subject, and I learned a lot. Totally recommended.
She knows so much about the subject of history, so it makes the material easier to understand and more enjoyable. Weekly Quizs, 2 test, and a paper so there is a good amount of work involved but it seems worth it.
Wonderful professor. Cares both about the subject and her students. Certainly does not grade like she is reading graduate student papers-grades like she expects her students to know the subject. Highly recommended.
I liked her class a lot i took both the Roosevelt to Reagan and the Constitution. She is a tough grader but she will help you if you ask. Her final was take home so it made it much easier. I would recommend her to people who actually read and pay attention in class.
I had her for Roosevelt to Reagan and really liked the class. She lectures well with great slideshows. The exams are all take home. She is a fair grader, she is not "grad school like" like some mentioned.you will do fine as long as you follow the guidelines. Just if you volunteer info, she holds you to your highest standards
The best teacher at UAlbany hands down. If you want to learn something, take her class!
Makes you want to be a better student. Great teacher! Take a class with her.
Bleeding heart liberal that has trouble keeping her politics out of lectures. The class is supposed to be about politics, but she makes it all about social movements. She often sends out the wrong copies of assignments and wonders why people do them "wrong". Wasn't thrilled with the class.
Good prof. Attendance not required. Assigned 2 chapters in the textbook a week, and two novels throughout the year. Weekly quiz on one out of the two chapters that were assigned. 5 pg paper on family history. 2 noncumulative tests. Not too tough. Only read the one weekly chapter we were quizzed on, and never touched the novels once but still got A
weekly quizes on the assigned reading, two cumulative tests ( midterm & final), two 2 pages essays, alot of work for a 100 level class
This lady is ridiculous. She assigns tons of reading for a 100 level course. She treats you like you are in middle school spending part of every lecture lecturing you on when to take notes and if she doesn't see people writing stuff down that she wants she stops and tells everyone to. She comes across as a control freak and expects way too much.
Good professor, always there to help you. LOTS of reading and are mandatory. Doesn't take attendance in lecture, but you do have to go to discussion.Easy class but you do have to put some effort
one of the BEST teachers I have ever ever had. I took her american social and political change and even though im a music major i contemplated changing to history just to have a chance to take more of her classes. she is a fair grader and tells you everything she wants you to know. Take her class. You won't regret it.
SHE IS AWESOME! i loved her, she was very passionate about the subject and made me feel interested even though history is a boring topic, she made it fun. not a easy grader, but if you study the way she tells you to not impossible to get an A. This is NOT a class for lazy ppl who don't wanna do the work. There's a lot of reading you need to do.
Okay teacher, asks for alot of work for an introduction class you do need to read the hw for each quiz. However, there seemed to be a trick question every quiz and she's a grammar nazi when grading the essay. 7/10.
Ok I want to let everyone who is looking for a good history course know that this is the teacher to take. She is NOT easy if you're a slacker who doesn't want to do the reading or take the time to study. But if you take this course with a wanting to learn than you will love her and appreciate all that she teaches you. I LOVE this teacher.
Love this professor. Voluntarily took her because she genuinely loves her subject. She is a difficult grader, but go to class and you'll do fine. Lectures are important and she requires a lot of work, but makes the class really interesting. Definitely recommend her, but be ready to work hard!
She really cares about the material, and doesn't bs her students like other professors. If you pay attention and do the readings you have nothing to be worried about.
Professor WIttern is probably the best professor I've ever had. She's great in class and in my opinion, a very fair grader. I've taken multiple classes with her and will take one next semester as well. She's more than willing to help students outside of class and I'm in her office all the time for all sorts of reasons. Best professor on campus.
Prof Wittern is one of the best professors I've ever had! Her courses aren't hard, but they're challenging. She will not tolerate tardiness or off-the-cuff work. If you apply yourself you will be rewarded! See her in her office hours!
Super helpful. Super clear. But she is a tough grader and the tests are hard no matter how much you study. I managed to get B's in the three classes I took with her.
Great teacher. You don't really have to read the text book. Weekly quizzes in discussion. 5 questions super easy. Super easy midterm. Gives review sheets. One of the best teachers I've had. loved the class.
Attendence not mandatory, but if you go to class, pay attention and do the readings, 1-2 chapters a week plus a video to watch then youll do good. two tests and a paper and a 5 question quiz every week
History of the American City II was the single college course in which I learned the most. Dr. Wittern is a great teacher. She commands respect, and as long as you give it to her, and DO THE READING, you will do well. Attendance not mandatory, but if you miss class, you will undoubtedly miss important material, and quizzes which you cannot make up.
Great class & great professor! She's very enthuisastic and helpful! Her class was also a discussion section each week which involved participating and taking short quizzes in a room full of people with a TA. My TA was foreign and hard to understand. Besides that, she's an awesome teacher and she knows what she's doing.
Prof. Wittern is hands down the best professor I've ever had. As said previously, she COMMANDS respect but she's smart as a whip and loves her job and her content. She's dedicated, clear, focused and has a way of teaching that makes you feel like you truly understand. Well done Dr. Wittern, you're the best!
Interesting professor and engaging, but unless you wanna be annoyed by her incredibly picky grammar rules AVOID HER! She does not grade papers on your knowledge of history, but rather if you can write "properly." She'll take an entire 10 points off even if you have ONE misused word/ wrong comma usage/ etc.
The class is one of the best history lectures I have ever attended and I normally hate history. There is a lot of reading for a 100 level class and the class is extremely demanding. Weekly quizzes and readings. Read and try and you will do well.
Very tough and confusing teacher
This was Professor Wittern's first time teaching the course. It was a very interesting one and quite well-put-together. She is a great lecturer. Everything flows together. She communicates well with her students and is open to feedback. She expects a lot from you but is not even close to being as hard as people make her out to be. Reading is key.
Laura is as rude and condescending as they come. She believes she has taken a job beneath her academic aptitude and wants everyone to know it. She is a decent lecturer. However, she cancels office hours with no notice and can never be wrong I suggest you avoid Laura. There are many other History professors who will actually treat you with respect.
In my 4 years at UAlbany, there have been 2 professors that could keep my attention for a full lecture period and Professor Wittern-Keller is one of them. She is an excellent lecturer and her discussion groups were enjoyable. You can choose to attend class or not, but I recommend going in order to opt out of reading
The class is harder than it should be. This is the class that I have the most work in, and it is just a Gen Ed. If you like history, you will probably get more out of this class. All in all, I regret taking it.
She's so rude. You will get yelled at for having your phone. Lecture notes aren't helpful and aren't posted on blackboard. Don't take this class unless you are absolutely in love with history or are a history major. Even if you need to take this class, take it with a different professor.
Very good professor. You can tell she is very ;passionate about what she's teaching and that makes the lectures interesting. This is the one lecture i have that keeps my attention throughout the entire 55 minutes. Content is interesting and relatively simple to understand. Highly recommended!
Okay so what you can expect from this class is a lot of reading material. However the entire textbook she uses in her His100 class has a study outline of every chapter online so reading is easy. On her midterm she will let you bring an index card ?& her final is online so its really easy. Weekly quizzes and journals but if you read your golden.
Prof Wittern-Keller is great! She makes the lectures interesting but don't think that this class is easy. There is a ton of reading and writing about the text every week. As well as a weekly quiz every friday 5 questions 20 points each.
Lectures do seem to drag on by the end of the class period
Great lecturer, explains topics well/clear. Must show up to class/discussion. Professor doesn't put slides online. If you miss class, most students don't share notes on Blackboard, if you ask. Discussions participation is crucial, need to do readings (for quizzes)/documentary viewings (for participation points). 2 journals due weekly for discussion
Good lectures. Must be in class to pass. Slides aren't posted online. Journals due weekly. For weekly discussion class you must do your reading or don't expect to pass quizzes.
Great professor, very professional and it shows with how the class and grading are arranged. Tests range from somewhat easy to difficult, do the reading and your grade will be boosted. Willing to get to know you too. It'd be nice though if her power points weren't full of misspelled words.
Amazing teacher, very passionate about her stuff. Was not interested in history AT ALL before I took her class just for a gen ed. She chooses a good textbook too, take her if you can!
A lot of reading and a lot of documentaries to watch, but it is all so worth it. She is so incredibly intelligent. Hated US history before having her as a professor. It is amazing how much she knows. It is important to go to class and go to discussions -- there is a quiz every discussion class and one essay written but it helps bring your grade up.
I think she is a very intelligent professor. However, for a 100 level gen-ed, it is a lot of work. She expects you to know everything. Her weekly quizzes are very tricky and almost impossible to get a 100. Her tests are alright, but questions are worded specifically to confuse you. Her notes are not helpful and she barely answers questions.
I took this my FR year as a gen ed & looking back I had to read more for this class than I did for Accounting lol. True sharp-witted intellectual and historian but she makes the class a little much for just a gen ed. Having been a perfect AP history student it wasn't too difficult but I still learned a lot! She grades like an ENG prof. which stinks
She explains topics so well and thoroughly. You have to be in class to pass the test, because the textbook won't tell you everything that she wants you to grasp. She's clearly passionate about what she's teaching and it makes it very easy to remember what she's saying. I think she's brilliant. I would love to have her for another history class.
She's my favorite professor, she explains everything very well. Pay more attention in her lectures. As long as you pay attention to her lecture you won't need the book. I got the book and never used it. She gives an optional exam at the end of the semester encase you bombed one of the exams, she wants to help everyone get an A in her class.
Loved her as a professor. She can really make dry topics interesting because of the way she speaks in her lectures. It was because of her I didn't dread having a 9:20 class. You do have to put in effort to get a good grade though, 3 exams, weekly online hw, an essay and then the discussion class counts for a quarter of your grade.
The course is definitely an easy A. The quizzes and tests are online and the lecture notes are available online before class. There are no papers but there is a journal each week that is tedious but easy. I would recommend this class with this professor to anyone who asked.
I took this as a night class, and she sure was able to keep me up every week. She is very fun and interesting to listen to. She made the class very easy for you to understand. Even outside of the classroom, she cares about people. You can tell she loves her job, a true professor to UA for sure.
she is an amazing professor I adore her so much but her class is so hard I thought I was going crazy! I couldn't not keep up with her class. I did the best I could on finally paper she still think that my best was not enough.
I love Wittern. She is an amazing professor who keeps you really interested in the material that she is teaching. She can make any topic interesting and keeps the class engaged. Weekly journals are little hideous but aren't graded harshly. Would recommend taking her!
I loved her class. One paper and 2 online test. Go to class and take good notes because most of the test questions are based on lecture. Easy to get a 100 on all homework. She will make you like history and actually not mind going to class.
The class is easy to pass. Make sure you go though, I slept through it a lot. 2 online tests (theyre kinda hard if u dont stay on top) 1 paper, weekly online quizzes (the website allows you to get 100s each time) and participation in discussion sections with a TA. You can tell she really loves her job. She also posts nothing online.
Its generally an easy class. Lecture is interesting and she's brilliant, but shes also a hawk when it comes to phones. Heads up, her online homeworks are numerous so its important to keep on track, they can be paused and resumed as well. Discussions are where attendance and participation matter. Papers are easy. Would take it again.
Amazing professor. you will want to go to class to listen to her. Just take notes write down everything she says. Than the test will be a breeze.
I love this professor and have taken classes with her twice. Shes tough, but fair. The classes she teaches are very interesting and engaging, and I love going to those classes. There is a lot of reading, and a lot of pop quizzes on those readings.
Absolutely amazing professor. One of the most interesting classes I've ever taken, and I actually enjoyed going to class every morning. Work is light, Inquisitive every week, if you do the reading you'll do well on it. Mid term + Final is online and if you pay attention in class, she gives you the answers to the midterm and final questions.
I loved this class - one of only a few that I can say I actually looked forward to. Dr. W-K is very knowledgeable, and she communicates that knowledge in an engaging, accessible way. Go to class, pay attention, take notes on the outlines she posts, and you'll do fine. Exams & quizzes are online, and are reasonably easy.
Highly recommend. She gives great feedback and advice and runs her online class really really well. Instructions and expectations were clear and she grades pretty quickly. Lots of reading, but really interesting material and never boring.
I went into this class knowing some information about the Civil War. Definitely learned a lot. Professor was a fair but tough graders. Prepare to read a lot and take notes on her slides. Uses videos to supplement learning. Overall great professor to take if you like history and don't mind the work.
Amazing professor. She's understanding and cares about us outside of school. Quizzes are really easy on Inquizitive and tests are based on powerpoints in which she gives to us every lecture. Discussions aren't that bad but they require evidence from the textbook. Overall, great professor.
I loved her as my prof! Since class was all online, it was Asynchronous. we had HW due every Wed that was linked to the online text book so it brought you right to the answer. Every Fri we wrote a response on a 45 min documentary snit-bit which was SO INTERESTING. easy grading and only 1 paper. often gave extensions to HW. 10/10 prof!!!
The class for sure is nowhere close to an easy A, the tests which there was about 4 were pretty difficult. There is a lot of homework which is slightly easy to do but it's definitely a lot of work. There's also an essay that's worth 15% of your grade. I'm sure there's another US class easier if you're just looking for an easy A for a US gen ed.
Really cool professor! Definitely intend on taking more of her classes! As long as you keep up with lectures, textbook reading, and documentaries, you should be fine.
Favorite Professor I've had so far! Great straight forward teaching style, understands students needs, and overall a great class!
Shes a fine lecturer but I absolutely couldnt stand the TA I had and the discussion classes are a waste of time. Would liked the class if I only had to deal with Dr. WK.
Dr. Wittern is one of my favorite professors in all of UA! her lectures are very informative and she is so understanding with late work. The homework was very easy every week and she has a great sense of humor. One thing I didn't like about the class is the TA's. The TA's were too strict for no reason, and the discussion groups didn't help at all.
She says to get a book but I didn't and was fine. Her lectures are so interesting &she's very knowledgeable. She gave us 2 papers, midterm&final,& group project. There were some discussions but mostly lecture. Weekly homework is graded perusall annotated readings&movies but they're not bad. You have to put a little effort but an A is very doable
She was an amazing professor for history. She was very passionate about the material and it gave me the joy of learning history I had missed for so long. I asked a lot of questions in class that she received very well. The material was reasonable and doable. All assignments for the week due on Sundays.
Dr. Wittern is a phenomenal professor who I highly recommend taking. Dr. Wittern understands the perspective of being a student and she really goes above and beyond for you in making sure you understand the material, which she makes very interesting. She makes it very clear what the class will be and expects you to put in the effort but still 10/10
Shes extremely passionate about history, course isn't about memorizing dates but instead learning concepts and the meaning behind many historical events. There is an inquiz every week and a discuss section you need to participate in, plus one essay. Sounds like a lot but it's pretty easy and quite interesting. Would take if history normally bores u
Great Professor, the tests were mainly testing if you understood the material and the quizzes were pretty easy
She is good at what she is doing but her exams are really hard even with the lecture notes, attendance isn't mandatory but you should go, This class felt like a 300-level class, Quizzes are pretty easy because they are on Quizlet, Tests are online but google doesn't help at all, So I guess don't take it as a gen ed unless you want to
She is very vague when it comes to instructions/directions for writing assignments(Perusall and Journal Entries). Always give her more than what she asks. She changes her mind a lot and contradicts everything she says. She would constantly gaslight you if you don't have hard proof to show her. DON'T EVER TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!
Prof. Wittern is super caring and very passionate about the history of the Civil War era. I actually took away something from this class! She is super smart but doesn't make lectures too overwhelming. Nothing is weighed too much in the overall grade, she is very lenient with deadlines and gives extra credit which helps with getting a good grade.
There were a lot of Perusal assignments and you have to do more than required to do well. The midterm and final essay were based on the slides. Also, a research question is due almost every week. Overall, not a bad class.
Amazing professor, however, discussions are hard and she does not have much sympathy for personal problems. Need to attend discussions and participate heavily to pass.
Professor Wittern-Keller is very well informed and her lectures were absolutely amazing. The only part of the class I didn't really like was the fact that Fridays we had a mandatory in-person meeting with a teachers aid which graded very harshly on participation and was unclear at times with instructions. The professor also gave no syllabus.
Lots of work and due dates. I understand that this is an online class, so it is bound to be heavier on the workload, but there is absolutely zero need to have 3 perusalls due the same day as a midterm, as well as three other separate due dates the week following. Great content but not the most considerate in that area.
The easiest class I have ever taken.Monday Wednesday lectures not mandatory and Friday we have a ta.Participating and attendance helps a lot with you grade. Most of the course work is easy 3 quizzes 1 essay and an online hw that you complete every week.
Top 5 professor at UA. Very encouraging and inspiring. As long as you output quality effort & stay on top of assignments, you will succeed. Although online, it is designed well to teach you how to advocate for your educational success.
Overall, she is a good teacher and is very knowledgeable. She didn't lead the discussion classes every Friday, a TA did. This TA graded us pretty harshly. It was hard to get a really good grade in this class even though I understood the material and did the work because the TA would grade us so hard in the discussions which was kind of ridiculous.
