Somewhat boring but no finals!!
she gives good examples
has got to stop fiddling with the overhead
Very unclear, does not explain material well, does not give conscise help
knows her stuff and very nice. Notes a little unorganized, though
Turned me off from psyc completely. Too soft spoken and biased.
very quiet; be prepared to write fast, and don't expect notes to make any sense.
Boring as hell.

Tried to convince us evolution didn't happen.
tests are not representative of what she teaches
could barely stay awake during her lectures
Didn't find lectures helpful at all.
Nice lady but can be unclear and too fast
She sounds like a kindergarden teacher, and she tests like one also.
She's so nice. 210 is fun but like any other history course it gets dry at times
i have no idea what her lectures are about, not a good teacher
No Comments
Boring and confusing. Means well, but doesn't teach well.
does her best to make everything harder then it really is..tests are unfair and it's impossible to stay awake most of the time!
great course, but the textbook simplifies the material.better read more from other resources
Her tests do not reflect what we learn in class at all! Don't bother to read the text and class notes you're just as ready going into a test not studying at all! Somehow, she thinks that people should do better too...Avoid this unfair teacher if you can.
The tests are not that bad actually. The textbook is really bad though. Really not meant to be used for an undergrad course. As a second resource, use History of Modern Psychology by Schultz which is being used at other universities for this course.
Nice lady, not a great lecturer. Tests were fair. Class was fairly boring.
Smart teacher. Perhaps too smart. Nice lady, perhaps not as skilled in lecturing as most other profs.
Class is useless.... just read the text and use common sense, and you'll do ok. She is rather broing and confusing because she discusses things in different terms than the text does.
boring class, boring teacher, exams aren't that bad though.your other option would be Bub for this course and his exams are even more abstract.she reiterates everything at least 3 times, drove me nuts. want a high mark, take 210 w/ her, want charisma,go w/Bub
Really really smart woman. One of the first profs I've had that can answer every question thrown her way. Tests aren't easy. Asks very ambiguous questions.
Really nice lady, but very hard to follow. She has a really soft voice that you think would be soothing but it actually makes you frustrated because you can't understand what the hell she is trying to say! Zero clarity. Thank goodness for the text book.
Very very nice lady!! But her tests can be too hard. Lectures are slightly boring too.
Really nice, really smart prof. 345 (drugs and behaviour) is a great course. 317 is more... "theoretical". She is soft-spoken, but willing to go out of her way to help you. Knows her stuff. Tests are definitely fair, but she does expect you
Facsinating class, boring lectures. Very tricky tests. Monotone voice is not helpful for paying attention and often wish she would explain concepts in different ways.
Warn: If you want to learn, never take this. ambiguous lecture, ambiguous exams.
No logical explanation of concepts.
I don't know what the hell she is talking about. I've written her e-mails asking for help and she dosen't answer my questions!!!!!! We don't even have a text book, just some stupid course pack with a bunch of uninformative nonsense articles.
I dont know what everyone else is saying..shes a good prof and she keeps it interesting, although she is soft spoken.. her and her TA are very helpful and are quick to respond to any questions. The assignments are an easy way to boost your marks...
(Infant and Child develoment)If you want 100% on her tests, make damn sure you write the specific words she is looking for. Eventhough you said everythings else under the sun but those exact words wont count. Watch out...
Dr. Mills was a good professor. She tried to enhance the subject material so that it would be interesting. I enjoyed the lectures for the most part, except psychology is not my area of expertise. I would recommend her for this subject.
She covered the material well, and made it interesting by supporting it with videos and other media. Could work on her lecturing voice though (extrememly soft-spoken, which leads to head-nodding).
Good professor, but she tries to make multiple choice questions 'concept questions' but only succeeds in making them ambiguous. Her short answer questions are generally, unfair. However, she is helpful and bright. Just needs to work on exam clarity.
Nice lady, lectures and discussions interesting, test are seriously crap...she just doesn't know how to make them...which makes them a little though.
Nice Prof with EASY midterms. Although you do tend to habituate to her voice! haha. Anywho... have Lalonde one semester! He rocks!
Very ambiguous and inconsistent. If you have the possibility to take the course with a different prof highly recommend it if you want to actually learn something.
Monotone. Really good at clarifying questions during lectures. Quite an air headed personality but she's just simply not trying to be someone she's not.
very interesting class, intelligent lady, lecture notes very important for exams..which are easy if you know her notes
she constantly tells class to "wake up"... but really, there's a reason we're all sleeping. No one wants to participate in class discussions, because they're so boring! but farily easy material.
I really enjoyed having Mills as a professor for this course. She really knows what she is talking about and tried to make it interesting. She was extremely helpful when I visited her outside class. Her tests were a bit hard.
Study BOLD words and her notes and its easy. 2 hours preparation for tests. Go to the first 2 discussions do them and relax. Do a poster presentation because it takes 3 hours to do or choose to do a journal and it takes 10. Both are easy.
the cure for insomnia...doesnt understand the material she teaches and uses outdated data. Her tests are ridiculous.answers questions by talking in circles do some independent reading on any topic and you will see she knows very little
I felt she promoted discrimination and marginalization of minority groups through the group project. VERY distressing. Boring and monotone, but fun to stare at her hair when bored (isn't symmetry supposed to be attractive?). Overall, a horrible woman
I really couldn't focus in class. I need some level of interest on the part of the prof for me to care.. and it just wasn't there. Monotone and detached lecture style was incredibly boring. I'd recommend avoiding if you can.
Class is boring but the subject matter is interesting and her tests are easy.
Useless....tragic...waste of time.
Mills is a good person and maybe a loveable grandma (no offence intended), but perhaps not the best psyc prof. She is very rigid and inflexible, as well as not so clear about how much she expects. Be prepared to work your ass off for A-s.
WORST!! NEVER TAKE IT
Do not teach if you do not the subject !!!
Weird hair! Boring class! Confusing exams! But not the worst teacher I have had. But not the greatest either! Enter at your own risk!
DOES know her stuff-- she just sometimes has difficulty communicating interest and relevance. If you want to do well, just try to think like Mills. She isn't keen on things that don't fit in categories or stray from the "norm."
knows her material very well. Sometimes has trouble confidently answering questions. Tests were hard but fair
A confused woman, doesnt understand anything, when proven wrong she'll embark on a circular ramble until you forget how wrong she was... her unit on ecstasy(MDMA) couldnt be more wrong. QUIT LAURAIN
She's OK, but the class was kind of boring. Tests were too hard.
Makes a great course suck. Tests are unfair and not taken from course content, but rather from a test bank for the text book which includes many things not reviewed in class. Tough class to do well in. Only thing interesting in her lectures is her wacky hair
her tests are ridiculous...theyre supposedly based on her lecture except she's a horrible lecturer and its impossible to understand anything from her webct notes
Worst Prof ever! Horrible lecturer and her notes are a disaster. Tests were unfair and she is very unhelpful.

Disrepectful to students if they ever question her. Super defensive. Tells you to know 1 thing, then tests on another. Should not be allowed to teach again, ever person I know hates her. She is rude, mean, ambiguous, and stubborn. I am an A student and I get Bs in her class which I studied tons 4
I can't believe I payed for that class. She's lazy and unprepared and it reflects in her class notes and test questions.
WORST prof i've ever had. tests were ridiculous and no matter how hard you study, you won't do as well as you think. very unreasonable and doesn't respect student. i do not like her at all...avoid this women.
YUUUUUCCCKKKKKK
i can't believe that someone actual thinks that she is a good prof. i don't deny that she is intelligent but she should stay in a lab and get out of the classroom.
Dr. Mills expects you to study hard and work diligently (exactly what a prof should do). If you actually understand the information (as opposed to mindlessly memorizing it), you will do well in her class. I am an A student and I received an A in her class.
The worst teacher I have had, EVER! She is not even a teacher. Seems to have no backround in the classes she teaches, and cannot adequately defend what seems to be her views and not based on any research. A waste of time and money. Does not test on anything of relevance.
What is everyone complaining about? If you go to class, pay attention to lectures, & read the text, you'll get your A. Prof Mills is a decent teacher and is readily available for help. She's definitely doing her part, so stop blaming her for your lack of intelligence! PS very interesting class too!!
What a terrible professor, the absolute worst I have ever had. She is unclear, and not knowledgable. Everything she says is subjective, and a lot of it is incorrect or here say. She is a very very irritating woman.
Very soft spoken and considerate! You do have to study to do well in the class, but isn't that what school is about? I would take her class again....
Nice enough prof, but ambiguous about subject material and course content. Multiple choice Qs from test bank - not always applicable to class discussions. Students must decipher unclear lecture notes (not covered in class). Pretty fair about marking tests tho.
Very vague. The trick to her exams is to not really study until the night before and just read over the notes and text a few times!
BOOOOOO, nasty person, does not test or mark fairly. Unapproachable if you disagree with her. She gets really defensive and rude.
WORST PROF EVER!!!!!! unless you want to write a 10 page paper on whether a bisexual would send back cold soup, or why they would be against war do NOT take this class. She contradicts herself constantly and the exam questions are ridiculous.
It's easy to do well in Mills' class. A's are given out in plenty, just don't think you're going to enjoy it. She is vague, and easily upset if her opinions are questioned. tests: whether you agree or not, know her opinions. she has the marks, so if she says 2 and 2 make five......
BORING. Monotoned lectures. Tests are hard, can't answer questions and lacks enthousiasm for her material
Dr. Mills is an intelligent and interesting professor. Her lectures are clear and she is always willing to help. If you pay attention in class, and read the text, you will be fine. Many of the psych students who complain about her are simply not that smart and are frustrated by their own inadequacies.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!!! She makes not sense half the time, tells students who make appts with her info that she fails to mention in regular classes regarding midterms, will only notify you the night before a midterm if she's decided to change the material on the next day's test, and said that she thinks attractive people are mean people!!
nice lady but VERY boring lectures. tests were harder than they should have been, the MC was easy, but its nearly impossible to get full marks for any of the written portions even if you write everything she gave you in the class notes
very soft spoken. she seems nice, but if you tend to miss class and try to learn from the textbook, don't take this class. ever.
If you take notes and read the txt, the test are fine- they are only difficult for people who don't study or take proper class notes, just like any class. She gives the info you need- if unclear instructions, just ask. She's understanding. A prof that's not bad at all- teaches at university level. You get out what you put in.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER PSYC CLASSES!!!
good course
Loved the subject material, went to class, took good notes, engaged in class discussion, read the text- still got my butt kicked by the tests (relative to the amount of work I put in and the grades I got in other classes) Where does she GET these questions?
Ridiculous. This lady contradicts herself like no other. The tests are more about how she "feels" than what she has taught you. Don't bother with the text because what she and the text say are not even close to the same. She pretty much ruined the class for me.
Extrememly hard to understand her lectures with her poorly working microphone, i dont like her multiple choice tests because the questions are too broad and sometimes irrelevant.
Useless! Should be a kindergarden teacher. Useless notes, useless lectures (when she shows up), clearly doesn't give a****. DON'T TAKE HER CLASSES.
i didnt read the text even once with this prof. study the notes and you will do awesome! people who find this prof tough have really missed the point of university. this prof takes concepts and expects you to learn and be able to apply those concepts. if you are only smart enough to memorize, you'll do poorly with this prof. suck up and learn!
She's an idiot plain and simple. She comes up with the most random assignments totally unrelated to the material, and picks specific details from her notes to test on, NOT the concepts. Avoid her.
I am about to graduate as a psych major and this is still my least favorite prof throughout undergrad. I took only 1 course from her 3 years ago, and have deliberatley avoid her other classes ever since.
I don't know what's all the complaining about. Yah her tests are hard but isn't that what University is about? You just have to really know your notes and read over your text...isn't that what you have to do in your other classes?! She's a really nice lady too and willing to help! Just ask!
The material was very interesting but she was a below average prof- very unclear explanations, tests are a poor reflection of material learned
Are you kidding me??? The class was boring as hell and the tests ... Her tests are just ridiculous; She doesn't seem to care about the questions she's using. There are some questions that don't even have a clear answer, which she eventually has to discard. She doesn't seem professional at all.
This class was the worst. Her test questions are extreamly difficult. Her lectures were boaring and i never wanted to be there. Will avoid taking a class with this proff again. Our class average was in the 60% for every test
I agree her tests are a little ambiguous but thats because all she is trying to do is get you to apply what you learn in class instead of regergitating her lectures word for word. Go to every class. Nice lady, super easy paper to write, would recomend if interested in content
Cancels many classes without explanation, and is very disorganized. Many instances where she assigned wrong readings yet quized us on what she "meant" anyway, cannot use class equipment and once forgot to copy a section of the exam so we had to come back another day to finish it. Shes very frustrating and unclear in several levels.
She's pretty disorganized and I have no idea where she gets all those m/c questions from. She tests stuff that she hasn't mentioned in class nor stuffs that's not in the text.
Lets face it you either love her teaching style or ya hate it. I personally would take every class with her if I could. Go to class, take good notes and study those notes! You'll do fine! Always has a good project to do that counts for 25% and is easy to do well on. As far as testing goes, if you understand concepts M/C should be easy!
Disorganized, unclear, gave conflicting and incorrect information. Readings incorrect on course syllabus - not corrected and class not notified though Dr. Mills was made aware of the mistake. Posted full first & last names, student numbers and grades online. I got an A in her class and I still think she did a sloppy job of teaching it.
Don't take her courses if you are interested in the subject...
best tescher. again, you wither love her method consisting of notes and lecutre presentations, or youll hate it. by far the best teacher in psych other than bain and an easy way to get an a. no****. you jsut have to go to class.
Mills seems like a nice lady, but as a prof she is useless. It seemed like she googled her class notes 5 mins before she arrived. Plus she cancelled 6 classes, she skipped more than any of her students.
This class was great. Every topic was engaging. Dr. Mills really knows her stuff and made the whole class feel comfortable. Some people complain about the low tone of her voice and her vague exam questions as a big problem. In my opinion those things have no bearing on the fact that you can easily get an A+ in her class.
Disorganized, Unhelpful, Often missed class without notice (6 or 7 times in one term.) Seemed to know little if the material she attempted to instruct. Her tests clearly reflected her knowledge of the subject, often having to discard questions post-exam. Useless if you hope to learn anything about the subject she claims to teach. 1/10 overall. :(
Very boring. All text book based. Little flow to lectures. Covers little in class but tests on details.
Worst prof I've ever had! Horrible! Useless! Her tests are so poorly written that no one can ever do well on them! Her assignments are ridiculous!
WOW. I've never been so frustrated or disgusted by a prof. Is she dumb or just so insanely lazy that she can't be bothered to actually proof read her own exams? Terrible questions, terrible lectures, she contradicts herself and confuses the whole class a daily basis. What a waste of time and money...will rip your gpa down b/c the exams that unclear
she is the worst prof i have had. very disorganized and her voice doesn't get past the 3rd row even when she uses the mic. unwilling to help and in her tests, she doesn't follow the guidelines that SHE herself set out. a waste of time and money to take this course with her.
This is by far the worst class that I have EVER taken. I studied very hard, but her tests are so vague and ambiguous and unrelated to the lecture that it is difficult to prepare for them.
Terrible, test questions are ambiguous and filled with errors. Doesn't explain concepts clearly/contradicts the textbook. For your own sanity, avoid her classes.
I think, Mills is a good prof for 336...dont know abt the 2nd yr level courses...i dont mind her test at all because she gives both mcq which are super easy and short answer direct from the inc class discussion....take this class its an easy A...and i also think that Mills is an extremely understanding and helpful prof...Adolesence Psychology:easy!
I had heard bad things about this teacher, but I really liked her. Approachable and kind, easy going, and tells cute stories sometimes. Lectures were slow paced and easy, and her exams are very basic. The final project allows for lots of creativity with no strict guidelines and no APA. However, she doesn't know the subject well at all.
I was also 0.7 away from the next grade and she didn't give it to me. Didn't even respond to my e-mail actually. This is the first psyc class that I haven't got at least an A in, because her tests are aweful.
She talks very quietly, almost mumbling, making it difficult to hear and understand even with use of a mic. Exams are a frustrating and full of errors. MC questions were unclear; riddles that had to be interpreted before you could even try to answer them. Members of class even went to chair of psyc dept to discuss problems with course content.
She shouldn't be teaching...motivation is basically non-existant, and notes are a mess.
Not the best prof I've had but not the worst either. She does speak very quietly, so sit close to the front or pray she uses the mic...she usually does. She's a little disorganized, but I like her. Once she said orgasm instead of organism...hilarious.
I had Mills for Psyc 210 and did not enjoy the class. Exams were unclear and class was excruciatingly boring. I then had her for psyc 336 and really liked her. Very knowledgeable, made class interesting, and exams were very fair. Would definitely take a senior level class with her again, but not a lower level.
Worst psychology professor I had at UVic. Especially horrible in teaching Drugs and Behaviour, as she is totally unqualified..and horribly misinformed. She reports incorrect and uncited information consistently...for tests..text/online notes are useless (rely on her rants/tangents). Enjoy making grade 8 calibre bristol board presentations.
AVOID like the plague. Mumbles to herself + apathetic attitude. Irrelevance of material she covers to the actual exam. Studying does not get you anywhere with the exam's randomness. Many others in the course voiced similar complaints, which are subsequently shrugged off, with bogus and very short explanations. She does NOT care at all.
She does not try to help her students and does not exercise tact in responding to questions. But, she has a unique perspective that can lead students to think differently. She seems jaded to the point of disliking students, but she is a deep, free thinker.
Mills is one of many terrible psych profs at Uvic. She always seems confused and often contradicts herself. Her tests make no sense, any her multiple choice Q's are not from her lectures OR the textbook. She is frustrating and knows nothing about drugs and behaviour!
A nice lady but speaks so quietly that even sitting in the front you can't hear lectures. ppts basically repeat textbook. Often contradicts herself/gives conflicting instructions. The multiple choice exams are terrible. However if you take the time to go to her to ask questions or express concerns then she was generally helpful and understanding.
interesting class decent prof.Tests are okay, power points right out of the book. I liked how we got to do a poster project, and how questions on the test referenced them easy easy marks.
Really just a horrible prof. She gets easily confused with what she is teaching and uses hopeless metaphors that make things more confusing. She is extremely lazy, her power points obviously cut and pasted (probably from Wikipedia) The term project is the biggest waste of time ever. She shouldn't even teach high school.
TAKE THIS COURSE: -If you like watching junior high public safety videos. -If you don't already know that heroin is "bad". -If you enjoy deciphering biased notes and exams rife with errors that contradict each other and the text. DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE: -If you want to learn anything useful. -If you want a prof that'll bother to show up for exams.
A pretty decent prof for this course, knows her stuff. At times will say some pretty controversial things, but it is acutally helpful in fully understanding the material bcz it forces you to consider alternatives. Tests were pretty easy, make sure you say what she wants to hear on the LA though.
This woman is absolutely useless, and does not deserve to call herself a prof let alone doctor. She is an embarrassment to post secondary institutions. Do not take a class with her unless you're satisfied with not getting an education
I'm sure Prof. Mills is a great person, but...unfortunately, she is not a good professor. Her lectures are completely unclear. The text doesn't help any because it's outdated, boring as hell, and never referred to in class. Her attitude towards drug addicts/rehabilitation is very one-sided and obviously biased. She lacks passion for the subject
Had her for drugs +behaviour and women + psychology. It is necessary to attend lectures in order to succeed and her testing style must be learned, but she is very flexible, knowledgeable and interesting. Once her testing style is learned, her classes are a breeze!
LOVE mills!! She is so awesome. Class discussions were always comfortable, interesting, and a lot of the time, really funny! She allows for students to voice their opinions respectfully. I really enjoy her!
Mills is hilarious and extremely intelligent. Yes, sometimes she messes up her wording and confuses people, but you just have to ask her to clarify. She is really knowledgeable and I love this class. Make sure you go to class - lecture notes have to be filled in in order to do well on tests. Also, read the text - she doesn't go over it in class.
horrible
Not only did she take the time to read my extremely lengthly assignments (with the proof being her relevant comments), but she encouraged them !
Don't take this class if you have a functioning brain. Mills frequently cites inaccurate or flat-out wrong works that she happens to agree with as fact, and seems to be one of those flaky people who believes it's impossible to know anything and therefore all ideas are equally valid. Extremely disorganized and absurdly demanding of student time.
Please, for me, don't sign up for a class with Laurain Mills. Save yourself the headache that I have to deal with. When you look around her class, everyone just rolls their eyes at her ridiculous claims, fragmented and factually incorrect slides, silly remarks and butt ugly appearance. Dont take this class unless you have no other option.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. I am going into a psych major and do quite well in it. However, in her class you do not learn anything and facts are sometimes wrong. Test aren't quite unclear too. Save yourself, honestly.
Mills does NOT know what she is talking about for 345A. I was extremely disappointed in the class. Do not take this class if you don`t like answering questions wrong on exams in order to get a good mark. I took DARE in high-school. I do not need another run through on propaganda.
What a moron. She tried to tell us that evolution isn't true (not sure how that's even relevant) on the basis of a handful of seriously outdated and easily disproved arguments that demonstrate her knowledge of the subject comes from a Texas high school textbook. Her tests are just as rooted in nonsense and subjectivity. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.
This class is extremely painful. She only teaches 2/3 of the time because she makes everyone do a group poster project like we are in grade 5. She is very disorganized and it is difficult to determine what will be on the test.Avoid if possible.
Completely monotone and uninteresting lectures. I'd go completely energized and ready to pay attention and she would put me to sleep. The material could be interesting if it wasn't for her pointless ramblings on seemingly irrelevant information. Her power points are inconsistent and poorly constructed. Avoid her if you can!
Awful professor, but nice person. She has a horrible teaching technique and speaks in a quiet, monotone voice. Makes interesting material thoroughly uninteresting. The poster assignment was ridiculous - she should teach the material herself, not get students to do it.
Classes deathly boring but Mills is a nice person. She's pretty funny... but I missed most of her jokes. The laughter from the students who managed to pay attention always broke my daydreaming trance...and then it was just too late. She posts notes online, if you study them you'll do fine on the tests.
Mills is great for more 'subjective' courses (ie. Adolescent development, Drugs and Behaviour, Women in Psychology). Her tests are very straightforward and the questions she will ask are obvious. As long as you're attending the discussion classes there's no reason you shouldn't be getting a good grade.
Eventually, I just stopped going to class. Mills put me to sleep faster than reading the textbook.
Probably one of the worst professors I have ever encountered at UVic. She gave boring, useless lectures that were completely unnecessary to attend, as all of the test questions were directly from the text book, and though it is an extremely easy course, it is one that I would never take again.
There is a substantial difference between the wording of the questions on tests and assignments, and what she actually wants. Questions are generally imcomprehensibly vague, and the expected answer is sometimes wrong (on occasion, she has been known to acknowledge that the "correct" answer is wrong, but dock marks for the real answer anyway).
The worst teacher at UVic. Avoid her at all costs, even if it is a course you are interested in - she will crush your desire to learn.
an absolute failure of a prof, the majority of her teaching content is anecdotal and her sources are not in the least bit scientific, and her textbook choice reflects this. her viewpoint is the only view point, so basically just memorize exactly what she says for the tests then purge your memory of it later, as more than half of it will be false.
Mills is okay. She is nice, but boring. Her lecture can put you to sleep. However, She is nice, and will let you hand in things late if you are nice. Her tests are not hard, and no big final, she spreads out the marks really well.
Horrible. Absolutely horrible. Tried to teach us that Freud had it all right and refused to acknowledge that any disputing opinions might possibly true. Missed a few classes due to pneumonia and her response was "You aren't a happy person, that's why you got sick". Literally fell asleep most days thanks to the monotone she uses to lecture.
Laurain's monotonous voice will put you to sleep. She has the ability to make even the most interesting topics unbearable. She did not know the material well. Her lectures were dull. Her tests were random and poorly written. I thought her classes wouldn't be so bad, but I was wrong. She's a really nice lady, but not a good professor. avoid
although she can make the material dry, she is very knowledgeable. i would recommend her to students who are motivated to learn and students who do not have a tendency to skip. she has a lot of in class discussions which are very helpful and easy marks!
Mills' ruined an interesting topic with horrible lecturing, unfair testing and an elementary school style group "poster project. On her tests make sure you memorize the old, 1996, stats from the handou and not the 2006 stats she talks about in class. her studies condradict so be sure to memorize the "right one". take it with dr jody bain instead!!!
Awful.I studied the text & powerpoints & got an A w/o going to class(except on presentation days b/c she will test you on presentation material). Very unorganized, sent us an email saying we could reschedule our presentation because one of our group members was sick. Imagine my surprise when I got called up on stage to talk in front of 200 people.
AVOID HER. Her voice puts you to sleep, her notes arent very detailed, you have to go to class and write down everything she says as quickly as you can. She will tell a student to get out of her class if she sees them texting, and she argues that students have told her to do that. Yea right, maybe 20 years ago..its annoying!! AVOID AVOID AVOID
A kind enough person, but an awful professor. She seemed to often re-word student questions that conflict with her views in order to favour her side. Example: A question about "psychological dependency" on religion was turned to "embracing strength in faith". Her slides are literally scans of textbook pages so her lectures were basically useless.
She has managed to turn what has the potential to be a very interesting topic into a very dull one with her monotone voice and inconsistent material.Hard to study for tests because her text reading doesn't correlate with her lecture slides, and it's always unclear as to what material she will deem important for testing and what's irrelevant.
This class was one of the low lights for me at UVic. I could only hear 50% of what the teacher said and the other 50% was just a cursory look at some of the course's concepts. This course required a lot of preparation with little reward. Also, none of the material was related to real world applications; so, I wonder of the course's usefullness.
Terrible! She speed reads pages of information that isn't in the notes or the textbook, she provides information that contradicts the text and other places in her own notes, and when asked to clarify what she's said (5-6 times a class) she muddies the water more. Avoid her! There must be easier ways to get the bio/neuro breadth req.
Dr. Mills is a really nice professor, but her monotone can easily put you to sleep! She likes to test on things she is talking about in class and I would recommend bringing a laptop to class because she goes through everything super fast. She also contradicts herself every 5-10 sentences or so. Book was fun to read but not testable.
Dr. Mills was the most disengaged, unconcerned, dull instructor I have had. If she cancels a class, she wonâ??t notify you via e-mail. Her multiple choice exams always had errors. She frequently makes negative comments about some distinguished scientists and wonâ??t repeat questions students ask so that everyone can hear what she is answering too.
Dr. Mills is very soft spoken - which can get a bit annoying - but she does cover interesting perspectives and she explains them pretty well. The videos she shows are actually pretty good and they are testable, just like the group projects. Overall, pretty good class. Just print out the slides and take notes on them
Extremely unhelpful in class, ignores students with their hands up. Tests are confusingly and unfairly written. Monotonous voice that put me to sleep every class. Avoid her if possible.
This course was not 'scientific' with Mills, so for anyone in biopsyc this may not be the course for you! Make sure to go to class with the powerpoint slides, but also must read the textbook to do well on the tests
AVOID AVOID AVOID. I'm a 4th year psych student and she is by far the worst professor I have ever had.
Thought I would give Dr. Mills another shot after taking psych 210 two years ago which was dismal. She has proven to be even worse in teaching psych 245... She disregards factual scientific information and uses her own abstract and absurd opinions instead. It is hard to sit through her lecture without tearing your hair out. AVOID.
Constantly contradicts herself, monotone, only uses studies that support her point of view. Doesn't promote critical thinking whatsoever, if someone brings up an opposing viewpoint she may reply "that could be true" and move on. Her classes are very easy but if you actually want to learn anything, don't take her.
I can understand others frustration with Dr. Mills. I found her to be a nice lady but there is certainly some room for improvement as a professor. I found the lectures to be... tense. After a few lectures you can sort of sense the unrest of many of the students. I found the in-class demos/labs to be very helpful in learning the content.
LOVED her. I was first afraid of attending her class because of the bad ratings, but she was such a sweetheart. The deate was fun, and she was funny as well. Her voic is very quiet, so you might want to seat in front. Overall, enjoyed it a lot.
It was an interesting class! you must go to class when it's a debate date because she will test you on that. Plus, it is easy way to get a better mark. She makes jokes sometimes and she is pretty funny. Prof.Mills is genuinely nice. Yes, she speaks very quietly, so sometimes she might put you into sleep...
Mills cancelled 4 classes thru term. Exams are purely based on her point of view (GO IN TO CHECK YOUR MIDTERMS I GOT MORE MARKS FOR EVERY EXAM AFTER CHECKING OVER THEM). ended up teaching an entire unit to myself due to her cancelling classes. don't need the text, read her slides. she is nice, but not engaged in teaching.
This was a really hard class. I've taken several classes with her. I don't know know if it's the material or not but many of the lectures lasted 25 min? She also missed a lot of class almost 2 weeks. I can't blame her for being sick though. She seems nice?
She is really quiet and hard to understand but she is a fair marker and her tests are pretty easy
She is monotone and quiet but she wears a mic so everyone can hear her. She is nice and fair and covers material well in lectures. Her exams test strictly on material and there are no word games involved in her exams to try and trick you. It is based on pure knowledge of course material. Overall I think she is a good prof.
She is very quiet, and gets confused about what is real or not. She mixes up topics and tests them wrongly. If you only listen to what she says you can get a good mark, but most of it isn't factual.
Quite monotone, but does wear a mic because she has a soft voice. Her ppts are basically stats that are pulled from the textbook. The course is very textbook heavy, however, she does provide learning objectives for each unit (exactly the stuff that is going to be on the tests). If you study the textbook you'll ace this class!
Super boring, but the material is very interesting. Make sure you attend every class and pay attention and you'll be fine, since she doesn't put stuff online. She shows a lot of videos which is really nice and relaxing. I didn't bother buying the textbook and I did well.
I really liked the class, but that has more to do with pre existing interest in the material, not her teaching. Laurain was alright, but I wouldn't say a particularily good prof. Read the assigned chapters in the textbook and you will get a good grade. The medica project was kind of fun.
this prof never seemed passionate about teaching, or helping students learn. Did not return e-mails, or answer questions, or provide feedback. I don't know if she designed all the assignments for this online course, but they were really time-consuming without being very fruitful. I found them quite boring. I will never take her course, ever again.
Lourain contradicts herself and the course material. She doesn't answer questions via email, and seems to except a lot out of assignments. Thats all fine, but she doesn't seem to have very high standards when it comes to professionalism. Would not recommend.
Average Prof - at best, enjoyable course content though. Comments on papers shallow and lack constructive element to improve. Slow in responding.. very slow..
Least favourite professor (I've previously finished a degree and am in my last year of a second, I've had many profs) that I've had. She is rude, condescending and does not give clear grading criteria. When you don't do well, she will simply tell you to "read the instructions". I'm generally an A student, she graded me consistently below that.
Laurain Mills is the worst teacher I have ever had. She's given me 0 direction throughout my course and has LOST most of my assignments too. I often have to re-send things and follow up with her to make sure she got them. I've had to "nag" her to mark my work. Test materials are not related to study material and she offers NO FEEDBACK when marking.
She made what could have been an interesting course boring. Marked my project late when it wasn't. Later said to another class (my friend was in it) that my project (don't want to say exactly what it was here) stood out as creative but, "I had to give it a 'B' as it was late". Ugh! Lost all respect for her after that. :( Also had for His of Psy :(
This 1st yr introductory course was much harder than my 4th yr courses. It requires ALOT of reading, wastes your time doing assignments, and does not prepare you for the exam! She deducts heavily for the littlest things and is slow to return them. The assignment/open-book quizzes take too long to complete for how little marks they are worth.
Had her for an online class. It took her over 3 months to mark one of my assignments, of which I had to nag her to mark- she even asked me if I "wanted them marked".... uh yes?? And the one time I asked for help, she only said she doesn't teach the class anymore. Terrible, do not recommend at all. (was psych 3151 OL)
Horrible Prof, very unprofessional, and will dock marks for ridiculous reasons. Assignments do not prepare you for the Final at all.
