hilarious!! She's very clear in her lectures and specific as well.
Wonderful teacher. Tough subject matter, but class & teacher are so enlightening
Fun discussions, especially sexual subtext of literature
Fun, hip, and silly but also very intelligent. Lots of reading but easy tests.
Brilliant and hilarious

Made Chaucer fun. A wonderful professor!

She's a dork who laughs at her own jokes, but is very smart and fun to have...
Nice lady and a good teacher. Take notes and read carefully and you will do great. Her handwriting is bad though. She is clear and organizied.
Easy class as long as you go, practically gives you test questions in class, don't need to read if you go to class, her class definately inspires you to read though!
you have to go to class but if you go its an easy A...pretty fun class too

Easy class and easy tests if you go to class, take good notes, and skim reading.
An easy class because she gives study guides that includes everything on the test. Also only one term paper to write for the entire class. She's very nice and actually cares for her students
super easy don't even need to read the books just go to class
Good.
go to class, there you will receive the test info, dont have to read much just use online notes to get familiar
She makes Brit Lit. tolerable
Lots of fun!!!
wow this class did not need to be as hard as it was thank the teacher for that. take another teacher if you want a good grade.
Amtower is so articulate. She enunciates every syllable so perfectly. Besides that, I always felt distanced from Brit Lit. But after taking her class, I became really interested in it. Now, Chaucer is one of my favorite writers.
One of the best professors I have ever had.
Prof. Amtower is a very intelligent woman, you actually feel like you learn something. Her lectures are definitely tolerable and not difficult at all to understand. Her exams match what she talks about in lecture so it's wise to go.
This class is ultra boring. The reading material is also pretty bad, with a lot of poetry. She makes some interesting points about the readings, but most of the lectures are irrelevant. I'm just not sure if she's the problem or its English Lit.
Don't take this class unless your have a sweet tooth for some eye candy. She's pretty hot, surprisingly.
Easy if you go to class and listen.
boring class. 3 tests and a paper along with quizzes from your discussion sections. lecture is pretty boring and very blahhh... if you have to take this class though she is pretty knowledgeable about english lit.
great teacher
She makes literature interesting by picking fun books. Don't really need to read to get a B at least, but GO TO LECTURES
She was a very good teacher, interesting, and available to help. test are very specifc so make sure to either get help or write down every quote she says and make sure you dont miss classes!
She is awesome! Very interesting and helpful. Take good notes, go to class, and participate for a good grade. Books are interesting, you will want to read them! I definitely recommend taking her!
good teacher, easy to listen to, if you go to class you will get an A no problem
She is a great teacher! Her class is very interesting and the readings are fun! You dont really need to read but it would be better for 100% on the quizes. Exams are at home essays and if you have a good TA you will do good. Great teacher, take her!!!
She is amazing! Interesting to listen to and funny. I would take her again. Midterm and final are straight forward and easy of you read and take notes. 2 papers were also not that difficult. She made a subject that I find to be dry become interesting to me. Just amazing!
EASY Class. You don't really need to go (but she's a good lecturer and she's hot), except to your 50-minute-a-week discussion section with your TA. Exams and quizzes are cake if you do the readings (which are good). Overall, a pretty easy A.
Pretty easy class. 5 quizzes and 3 take home essay tests. The tests can be a little difficult, but overall there not too bad. The class is very boring, but Amtower is cool and funny. Overall, good class to take for GE.
Readings, to me, were somewhat interesting... Class was easy overall... Just make sure you copy everything down when you are taking notes, if you can (you will see what I mean when you do take this) for you will need the info when you are doing your essays or studying for the quizzes.
Not a bad teacher at all, but you have to go to basically every class cause you need the notes. Quizzes sucked because they were worth 10 points less than the tests and the quizzes really weren't that easy. Overall, an alright class...a little boring at times.
She's so cute. You'll love her. Her TA's did most of the work, but she's very clear about what you need to know. Just go to class and take notes, you don't even really need to study all that much.
Very easy class! Let's her TA's do all the work and she not helpful at all cause she does not know her students. Make sure you get the right TA
Your TA will do everything and Amtower will screw your grade in the end. She has no idea who you are and she loves to relate everything to sex. Class consists of quizzes every two weeks and 3 tests in an essay format. Not that hard if you read.

Amtower has a great sense of humor and makes you interested in the subject. She even made theory (602) worth-wild. Medieval and Chaucer are her specialties. These 220 reviewers don't understand WTF is going on. Yes, the TA's do all the work, sorry. Take Amtower in 529, 530, 541A or 602. You'll be :)
Two midterms, a final, and a couple of papers. Pretty good overall.
THis professor is brilliant. I loved her lectures--she's knowledgeable, funny, AND smart. How often do you get that combination? Everyone should take this class.
This class made me love Chaucer. It's hard (you have to read Middle English!) but totally worth it.
This class was hard yet so rewarding. I don't think I could have ever gotten into Chaucer without her energetic and informative lectures. She is also quite funny an interesting. I thought her tests were ridiculously hard however. 25 multiple choice questions and TWO complete essays! Yikes!

Extremely rewarding. I never liked Chaucer until I took this class. Professor Amtower is extremely knowledgable and will hopefully open your mind to how awesome Chaucer can be.
SMOKING HOT. Seriously. Too bad she's married. She does an excellent job with 602 considering the material and the word of mouth surrounding other 602 profs.
Awesome professor. Really gets you into the subject and tries her best to help you understand. Always ready to help you when you need it. ALso helps that she is a very very attractive person with a lot of zeal and energy.
GREAT TEACHER!!!!!!! She is helpful. She tries to keep you interested in the class. The one project given is fun & different & you must know how to use power point. I definately recommend taking her!!!
Oh My God! Incredible! Amazing! Funny! Witty! Beautiful! Interesting! Sexy! Smart! I won’t go any farther because I don't want to be disrespectful to her husband but Amtower is a total ROCK STAR!!!
an excellent teacher. knowledgable. humorous. grades fairly. grade was based on 3 1 page papers, a partner presentation, about 8 quizes and a final exam. i would recomend her for sure.
I never knew how fun Chaucer was until I took this class. Amtower is an AWESOME professor with a great personality and sense of humor. She makes going to class fun! Her tests are challenging but if you read and take notes during lectures, you'll be fine. Definitly take a class by her sometime in your college career.
Just wanted to echo what everyone else is saying. Heard nothing but bad about Chaucer but w/her it was so easy. One of my favorite classes cus she made it so interesting. Realy does her best to help you to succeed. Also what a ****.
Great teacher! Makes Chaucer fun! Clear on assignments and very helpful.
It's always a pleasure taking a class with Professor Amtower. She is very knowledgeable and open to students' opinions. Be sure to do all the reading and take detailed notes.
She has an amazing way of analyzing the texts and pinpointing the meat buried inside. The class could have been a bit more exciting with regard to lecture periods, but the creative project was an excellent idea and the readings fascinating. Overall class was about a 4/5.
She's cool, but it's rough sitting through her lectures. The project was fun, and she's an easy grader for the most part.
I loved this class. Lectures are actually pretty varied (you have to do the reading, dopes), and she doesn't ask for the run-of-the-mill assignments, which is nice. Great teacher.

Double threat: Intelligent and Cute Got a ‘C’ and did not even try, who cares anyway....
Love Her!!!!!!!!!!
She was alright, tried to keep things interesting when dealing with Shakespeare. The only thing that bothered me was her inability to involve class discussions. It made things awkward and the atmosphere unenjoyable.
She was wonderful! Very knowledgable and humorous at times. She was structured, took attendance, was a hard grader, but allowed us somedays to get out early. Overall, she has been one of the best professors I have taken thus far at SDSU. I am taking her again next semester because of my experience with her.
Don't take her Chaucer class! The book is too expensive and she's such a hard grader. She's an expert on the man, so she has unbelievable expectations with your work. If you want to keep your 4.0...take something else for the Early Brit req. Trust me.
Great Prof. One of the best at State. She's not easy, but you'll enjoy every class.
Expectations are clear. 2 Online tests, 1 presentation, and quizzes are all easy if you have read.
Prof. Amtower's class was fun. She took the time to listen to student responses about the readings. The reading was difficult(it is a theory class), but the one page annotated bibliography were easy. I liked the presentations, just make sure you do the required research beforehand, and talk to her if you have any questions.
Great Teahcer! Interesting class. Very helpful and knows her information. TAKE HER CLASSES
She is one of the smartest and most interesting professors that I have ever had. Her lectures were extremely helpful for assignments and tests, and I enjoyed going to all of them. I wish she taught more classes!
Her chaucer class is awesome! You should be glad that she's an expert on him - it makes for a huge amount of learning! She switched to cheaper books, so there's no excuse. If you are truly an english major, take her classes! She's amazing!
I love her to death, she is the best. If literature is difficult for you, I would recommend taking her because she is genious at making your responses seem legitimate and apart of the discussion. She is difficult, but if you communicate with her, she will help you. She is not a vulture like some of the other English profs at SDSU.
I like this teacher, I was reading the syllabus freakin out, but its a really doable class. Go to the the lectures, pay attention. Take home midterm, essay, online final. Highly recommend this prof, makes the material doable, and interesting.
she is not a bad teacher i just didnt like most of the reading. she's nice and funny at times. i would recommend her if you're not taking medieval lit.
Great teacher! Made English fun. Got to attend lectures because the notes are important. TA's were amazing for that class as well, they made it great (especially Veronica!). I totally recommend here if your interested/like lit.
Great teacher. Makes connections in class that help you put all the pieces together. But don't take her if you're the kind of ENGL major who doesn't like to read, b/c she gets testy when you haven't done the reading.
The last person got it right - very good teacher (smart, funny, personable), but not for slackers. Just do the work and you'll learn a lot and do well. I'd take her again in a heartbeat.
She has a great personality, and explains things VERY well. She draws great connections between things which really help you put two and two together. If you're looking for an easy A, she wouldn't be the teacher. I would HIGHLY recommend her as a professor because her class is a great experience!
I am still trying to figure out how this class is educational. 3/4 all we talk about is stale internet news, sci-fi shows and popular culture. I wish I could demand a refund. Not for the serious English student.
She seriously knows Chaucer. Her knowledge and her excitement about the material made the class a lot easier. There is a translation quiz (which is not graded only for credit/attendance) every other day & on the alternating days there is a short 1 page paper due. If you go to class & study you can get an A. GradeSaver.com & sparknotes work!!!!
If you are looking for an english class that you get to read good books in and the class/assignments are easy, then this is your class. If you are a serious english student looking for good discussion and lecture with a teacher who seems to have it together, then sign up for another class. It's an easy class but sidetracking is how is usually goe
I didn't think I'd like this class, but so far it's really fun! The reading isn't too hard, and the lectures are pretty clear. One of the better professors I've had at SDSU.
Greatest teacher I have ever had. Dr. Amtower made my university experience amazing and helped me, tremendously, with learning the material in both an academic and practical way. She makes all of her classes fun to be in whether you are talking about Chaucer's "broken wind" or the Eloi in "The Time Machine."
She's really cool, funny and she does not grade too hard. The one thing about her though is that she can be scatterbrained sometimes.
As long as you go to every class and pay attention it is basically a guaranteed A. There is a midterm, final, an optional paper, and weekly one page writing assignment that you do in class. Amtower has some interesting reads and is passionate about what she is teaching.
By and far the best professor at SDSU. Smart, funny, interesting, and I gave her a red pepper!
Smart, Funny and Helpful. She is sympathetic when you do not relate to/enjoy the material. Must attend for in-class writings and complete all readings.
Midterm, Final, Optional 10-page paper, weekly quiz/One page writing response. This is the concept of the course. Attendence is req if you want an "A",Optional paper is req if you want an "A" too! The lectures are dull and can go off topic...Is not quick with responding to emails. She was the only teacher I ever bumped-heads with. She knows her stuff!
Amtower is amusing, charming, and adorable in every sense of the word. Genius and very talkative. So who is Chaucer? I didn't know! This class showed me how AWESOME Chaucer is! Canterbury Tales is the greatest book! Loved this class, books, prof. Lots of fun, never dull, good atmosphere, fun weekly 1pg essay + short translation quiz. TAKE IT!!
BEST professor at State! I took her for Folk Lit and Med Lit this semester. Incredibly cute, amusing, charming, and very obvious that she loves what she teaches. She makes lectures fun and interesting. Got an A and B+ in her classes. She takes attendance and doesn't like people leaving early. Read the material and you're good. Definitely recommend!
I mourn. In Memoriam: Laurel Amtower The Department of English and Comparative Literature mourns the passing of Laurel Amtower, who has succumbed to cancer. Her death is an immense loss to the department and to the college. A memorial service has been announced for Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 2 p.m., in the SDSU Alumni Center.
Truly one of the most wonderful professors to have walked the campus of SDSU. It is devastating to know she left us much too soon. She will be greatly missed.
RIP Prof. Amtower- you were a great one
