Amtower is so articulate. She enunciates every syllable so perfectly. Besides that, I always felt distanced from Brit Lit. But after taking her class, I became really interested in it. Now, Chaucer is one of my favorite writers.

Prof. Amtower is a very intelligent woman, you actually feel like you learn something. Her lectures are definitely tolerable and not difficult at all to understand. Her exams match what she talks about in lecture so it's wise to go.

This class is ultra boring. The reading material is also pretty bad, with a lot of poetry. She makes some interesting points about the readings, but most of the lectures are irrelevant. I'm just not sure if she's the problem or its English Lit.

She was a very good teacher, interesting, and available to help. test are very specifc so make sure to either get help or write down every quote she says and make sure you dont miss classes!

She is a great teacher! Her class is very interesting and the readings are fun! You dont really need to read but it would be better for 100% on the quizes. Exams are at home essays and if you have a good TA you will do good. Great teacher, take her!!!

She is amazing! Interesting to listen to and funny. I would take her again. Midterm and final are straight forward and easy of you read and take notes. 2 papers were also not that difficult. She made a subject that I find to be dry become interesting to me. Just amazing!

EASY Class. You don't really need to go (but she's a good lecturer and she's hot), except to your 50-minute-a-week discussion section with your TA. Exams and quizzes are cake if you do the readings (which are good). Overall, a pretty easy A.

Pretty easy class. 5 quizzes and 3 take home essay tests. The tests can be a little difficult, but overall there not too bad. The class is very boring, but Amtower is cool and funny. Overall, good class to take for GE.

Readings, to me, were somewhat interesting... Class was easy overall... Just make sure you copy everything down when you are taking notes, if you can (you will see what I mean when you do take this) for you will need the info when you are doing your essays or studying for the quizzes.

Not a bad teacher at all, but you have to go to basically every class cause you need the notes. Quizzes sucked because they were worth 10 points less than the tests and the quizzes really weren't that easy. Overall, an alright class...a little boring at times.

Your TA will do everything and Amtower will screw your grade in the end. She has no idea who you are and she loves to relate everything to sex. Class consists of quizzes every two weeks and 3 tests in an essay format. Not that hard if you read.

Amtower has a great sense of humor and makes you interested in the subject. She even made theory (602) worth-wild. Medieval and Chaucer are her specialties. These 220 reviewers don't understand WTF is going on. Yes, the TA's do all the work, sorry. Take Amtower in 529, 530, 541A or 602. You'll be :)

This class was hard yet so rewarding. I don't think I could have ever gotten into Chaucer without her energetic and informative lectures. She is also quite funny an interesting. I thought her tests were ridiculously hard however. 25 multiple choice questions and TWO complete essays! Yikes!

Extremely rewarding. I never liked Chaucer until I took this class. Professor Amtower is extremely knowledgable and will hopefully open your mind to how awesome Chaucer can be.

Awesome professor. Really gets you into the subject and tries her best to help you understand. Always ready to help you when you need it. ALso helps that she is a very very attractive person with a lot of zeal and energy.

I never knew how fun Chaucer was until I took this class. Amtower is an AWESOME professor with a great personality and sense of humor. She makes going to class fun! Her tests are challenging but if you read and take notes during lectures, you'll be fine. Definitly take a class by her sometime in your college career.

She has an amazing way of analyzing the texts and pinpointing the meat buried inside. The class could have been a bit more exciting with regard to lecture periods, but the creative project was an excellent idea and the readings fascinating. Overall class was about a 4/5.

I loved this class. Lectures are actually pretty varied (you have to do the reading, dopes), and she doesn't ask for the run-of-the-mill assignments, which is nice. Great teacher.

She was alright, tried to keep things interesting when dealing with Shakespeare. The only thing that bothered me was her inability to involve class discussions. It made things awkward and the atmosphere unenjoyable.

She was wonderful! Very knowledgable and humorous at times. She was structured, took attendance, was a hard grader, but allowed us somedays to get out early. Overall, she has been one of the best professors I have taken thus far at SDSU. I am taking her again next semester because of my experience with her.

Don't take her Chaucer class! The book is too expensive and she's such a hard grader. She's an expert on the man, so she has unbelievable expectations with your work. If you want to keep your 4.0...take something else for the Early Brit req. Trust me.

Prof. Amtower's class was fun. She took the time to listen to student responses about the readings. The reading was difficult(it is a theory class), but the one page annotated bibliography were easy. I liked the presentations, just make sure you do the required research beforehand, and talk to her if you have any questions.

Her chaucer class is awesome! You should be glad that she's an expert on him - it makes for a huge amount of learning! She switched to cheaper books, so there's no excuse. If you are truly an english major, take her classes! She's amazing!

I love her to death, she is the best. If literature is difficult for you, I would recommend taking her because she is genious at making your responses seem legitimate and apart of the discussion. She is difficult, but if you communicate with her, she will help you. She is not a vulture like some of the other English profs at SDSU.

I like this teacher, I was reading the syllabus freakin out, but its a really doable class. Go to the the lectures, pay attention. Take home midterm, essay, online final. Highly recommend this prof, makes the material doable, and interesting.

She has a great personality, and explains things VERY well. She draws great connections between things which really help you put two and two together. If you're looking for an easy A, she wouldn't be the teacher. I would HIGHLY recommend her as a professor because her class is a great experience!

She seriously knows Chaucer. Her knowledge and her excitement about the material made the class a lot easier. There is a translation quiz (which is not graded only for credit/attendance) every other day & on the alternating days there is a short 1 page paper due. If you go to class & study you can get an A. Greatest teacher I have ever had. Dr. Amtower made my university experience amazing and helped me, tremendously, with learning the material in both an academic and practical way. She makes all of her classes fun to be in whether you are talking about Chaucer's "broken wind" or the Eloi in "The Time Machine."

As long as you go to every class and pay attention it is basically a guaranteed A. There is a midterm, final, an optional paper, and weekly one page writing assignment that you do in class. Amtower has some interesting reads and is passionate about what she is teaching.

Midterm, Final, Optional 10-page paper, weekly quiz/One page writing response.This is the concept of the course. Attendence is req if you want an "A",Optional paper is req if you want an "A" too! The lectures are dull and can go off topic...Is not quick with responding to emails.She was the only teacher I ever bumped-heads with.She knows her stuff!

Amtower is amusing, charming, and adorable in every sense of the word. Genius and very talkative. So who is Chaucer? I didn't know! This class showed me how AWESOME Chaucer is! Canterbury Tales is the greatest book! Loved this class, books, prof. Lots of fun, never dull, good atmosphere, fun weekly 1pg essay + short translation quiz. TAKE IT!!

BEST professor at State! I took her for Folk Lit and Med Lit this semester. Incredibly cute, amusing, charming, and very obvious that she loves what she teaches. She makes lectures fun and interesting. Got an A and B+ in her classes. She takes attendance and doesn't like people leaving early. Read the material and you're good. Definitely recommend!

I mourn. In Memoriam: Laurel Amtower The Department of English and Comparative Literature mourns the passing of Laurel Amtower, who has succumbed to cancer. Her death is an immense loss to the department and to the college. A memorial service has been announced for Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 2 p.m., in the SDSU Alumni Center.
