I love Laurel... Very smart and funny, but just a little sketchy. Usually late for class, but always entertaining when she shows. Pretty easy marker.
*sigh* A very tiring prof. Scattered, less than coherant 90% of the time. Easy marker, but don't forget to be slightly original.
She's frequently late, unorganized in class and confuses her languages. How are we supposed to learn the Latin if she doesn' know it herself?
She is very unorganized. All you would have to do to get a good mark in this course is read the textbook and show up to hand things in or take a test. She always talks about greek in latin class which is confusing.
My favourite class. I laughed; I cried. Bowman is so knowledgeable that she forgets most of us started at ground zero with Greek language. Fast paced class, demanding, fascinating!
Get this lady some ritalin.
very helpful lady, will bend over backwards to help a student, posts all lectures on the internet in video format and all quizzes are open-book...what more can you ask for?? i found her very organized and interesting to listen to
She makes this course very entertaining. I love the way she condenses myths into a quick, funny, anecdotes. Sure she's a little jumpy but at least she's energetic. Her power points make it easy and straitforward to take notes.
she's a little long-winded, but she doesn't assign much...
I liked her. Very pretty face.
Really knows what she's talking about. Sometimes gets a little off track but she's a very interesting teacher and she cares a lot about everything. Very fair marker and assigner. Sometimes late and disorganized but has powerpoint lectures to help. :)
I love not having midterms in this class. Online quizzes are awesome
She is cool! I like her! She makes you want to learn about the greeks and their crazy mythology! Quizzes are fair too!
Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. She's a bit disorganized, and always five minutes late, but very helpful and fair.
No knowledge of textbook; complete inability to explain concepts clearly. Very long-winded to extreme irrelevancy, suggesting major ego problem; sometimes downright rude. Unwilling to admit when wrong. Tests POORLY written (And I'm doing well in the class). Latin NOT her forte. Bad semester for her?
classes are entertaining, online quizzes are SUPER easy and she knows her stuff inside out. myths always end up sounding hilarious and the marking is fair. great course.
Excellently taught course. Covers a vast amount of material in depth without losing the class at all. Appreciated humour and interesting theoretical take on myth. I venture that you will learn more in this class than most, and the online quizzes and assignment are both useful and stimulating.
very polite and nice to talk to. not a fan of weekend quizzes, though it was better than a final. she mainly dictates straight from the book, but with more pictures, which are available online after class, so. . . this was like a correspondance course for me, yay more time for prereqs!
She made this class way too boring! She's uninteresting, talks a lot about nothing, loves the sound of her own voice, and we haven't received one mark yet and it's the middle of April! Greek tragedy can be good, it wasn't with her. You can get a lot more out of this course with another prof.
Pretty good. Did well considering the material.
Absolutely horrendous class. Yes, GRS 200 with Bowman is the easiest course you could ever take in your university career. However, if you want to learn anything, and I do mean anything at all, it is a complete waste of time. There is no sense of accomplishment in getting the inevitable "A." Look elsewhere if you're interested in the material.
One of the easiest classes you could ever take. The online open book quizzes are as good as it gets for any university class. Try and get a really high quiz mark because she marks the papers really hard! Also scaling occurs in the class, so try and do well in everything or you'll be scaled down a letter grade.
I signed up for this course as a GPA booster and I wasn't disappointed. While I found her lectures to be rather boring, you could tell she was passionate and knowledgeable about the material. It gets better as the term progresses. Do the generally easy online quizzes with a friend; many of the same questions appear week-after-week.
She's one of those people that's funny without meaning to be. Dr Bowman is a really great person and her class was really fun! I also learned a lot.
Passionate, knowledgable, corky-funny, interesting... She's a great teacher, and the class was great fun!
Fantastic Professor! Came out of this class with a real love for Greek drama. Loved that she allowed me a certain amount of creativity in my assignments. It really helped me get into the plays and find a way that I thoroughly enjoyed to interpret them. Great blend of text and video as well. Helped me to get into the plays. Definite reccomendation!
completely imcompetent. poor teaching skills. butchered what could have been a great course.
She's a wonderful woman, but I imagine would rather have been teaching Greek. She was disorganized and didn't seem to be on top of her Latin. I might take Gk with her, but not Latin. She has marvellous enthusiasm.
Not a bad prof. She is very interested and very knowledgeable about what she teaches so she can help with anything and is always willing to take a look at assingments before you hand them in to ensure a better grade. She is sometimes disorganized but very enthusiastic and can sometimes strew off topic but all in all a pretty good prof.
The class was Greek Tragedy, and the professor was enthusiastic and knew her subject. The texts were just translations of the plays. Lectures were clear and interesting. She used a lot of films of scenes from modern productions, which were fun. Online discussion questions, essay and take-home exam. I got a lot out of the class.
She has extensive knowledge in the subject. She is a professor who wants to see all of her students do well which is what every professor should strive for. She is funny and is very interested in Greek & Roman studies, which makes the class interesting.
Really good class. Professor is passionate about topic and is always thinking about students. I like the quizzes!
This professor reads this site and when she realized that everyone was saying how easy she was, she changed around the whole course to make it harder to be careful if u think ur gettin into an easy A course. This course is still fairly easy if u always attend class. Still a good overall prof although her lectures are sometime hard to follow.
I loved this class. She is one of the best professors that I've ever had at UVIC. This is a must take class for any Humanities or Social Sciences Majors!!
This class was great! She was a really fun teacher and it was SO easy. There is NO final, and the majority of your grade is based on these online quizzes that are really easy if you've taken the notes in class. I thoroughly enjoyed the class, and I definitely recommend Bowman for it.
She's a wonderful prof. I got a lot out of the course material, and it was great to have a course that actually made me think. She was funny in her own way, and clearly loves Greek and Roman Studies. She was more into the Greek myths then Roman (and really so am I). I would definitely recommend this course and probably any course by her.
One can tell the prof has a interest in the subject the course is a complete waste of time for those who want any more knowledge then a surface one. One can get the same amount of info from reading the text If you want an easy grade I recomend the course if you are in it to learn buy the text and skip the course(taught by bowman)its a waste of$500
She is absolutely awesome. Very engaging. I loved going to her classes because she makes all her lectures as interesting as possible. Assignment was difficult and poorly explained. BUTI didn't crack open the text once and I didn't get lower than 92% on any of the quizzes...if you go to every class and takes notes, you'll do well. HIGHLY recommended

Insultingly easy. Power point multiple choice testing essentially allows cheating. Slow marker. Late to class every day. Late posting study materials before tests. Overall, very disappointing.
I really enjoyed the class and the prof. It was super easy so its not exactly a stimulating course but it was super interesting and she really knows her stuff. I would take another mythology course from her again and not just for the easy mark!
She knows her stuff, but races through lecture slides at a speed that no one can keep up with, as if we should already know everything. It's obvious that everyone needs more time when they tell her to slow down, but she simply says "I'm bored" and moves on.
Basically you can cheat your way through this class.
Dr. Bowman is a kind and intelligent prof but some aspects of her teaching style make the course frustrating. As stated by others, she rushes through the slides but doesn't post them online normally. The image questions on tests are difficult if you didn't attend class. If the quizzes are online, it's super easy, however.
Prof. Bowman was really great. She did talk fast, but all the information was on the slides. By not posting them online she required you to think for yourself, and what was on the quizzes was word for word from the lectures so if you attending, you'll do fine.
Bowman is arguably one of the worst profs I've ever had. Her teaching style is frustrating because almost all of her notes are taken orally; she only posts slides with 1 or 2 sentences of notes on them and races through them expecting you to know them. AVOID any classes with her. She's a kook
Easy class as long as you pay attention in lecture, esp at the pictures. She does rush sometimes but if you email her she will usually post the slides online. No final exam, mark is spread pretty evenly between 2 in-class essays and 4 20 MC tests. GPA booster if you have any interest in Greek myth and show up to class. Plus, Prof Bowmans funny.
I thought she was a great teacher and the class was pretty easy! The readings are interesting and as long as you do the readings and just go to class to listen to what she says, you will do fine on the quizzes and the essays! Easy markers, and easy to obtain a good mark! Teacher is also funny and i would definately recommend this class!
It's been a couple years since i took this class but when i did it was a easy-breasy.her tests were super easy, you could watch disney's hercules&pass this class.that being said i learned a ton.shes hilarious, and super helpful if you ever need a hand.I try every semester to take one of her classes.*the class has changed a ton since i took it aprntly
I had Dr. Bowman for the tutorials as well as the lecture. She's very amusing but not always well organized. However, since the class was very relaxed, it never really bothered me. It was a very interesting class and definitely made me interested in taking another GRS course. Definitely hope to have her again.
very nice woman, incredibly unorganized notes and sometimes confusing lectures though. races through slides and doesnt put them up online. better for greek tragedy than 200 but i wouldnt recommend her classes unless you are super familiar with the subject matter.
Not helpful at all and doesn't seem interested or get anyone interested
Super easy class. Her tests are very straight forward, don't even need to study just go to class. Sometimes she goes through slides a little fast but overall pretty good. Very interesting and definitely increased my interest in the subject.
Overall a good professor during lectures, but takes forever to hand back assignments and is constantly running late for class. Relatively easy marker, but not very organized.
Although a bit of a rambler, her lectures are almost always very interesting because she is obviously very passionate about the topic. She can be a bit disorganized, which can be frustrating, but overall an excellent class. Definitely attend lectures - the quizzes revolve around them.
Bowman was a super nice prof but she was hard to follow at times. You have to type/ write fast to keep up with her rambling. Overall good class and easy GPA booster if you just put in a tiny bit of effort.
At first I thought she was crazy disorganized but it gets better as the course goes on. I ended up studying a ton for this course, it's a lot of memorization but fun too. I managed to get an A even though I wasn't entirely sure what I was doing. Doesn't mark too hard, actually wants you to do well. She can be a bit scattered but is a good teacher.
Bowman's lectures can be kind of confusing and awkward. She certainly knows her subject matter and is enthusiastic, but her disorganized lectures hinder actual learning. Needs to learn to stay on topic. Always went two or three minutes over class time. However, very kind woman and always available for help if needed.
Laurel Bowman is a very good teacher. She truly wants her students to do well and her passion for the subject shines through. Replies promptly to email, willing to provide extra help after class or during office hours; she's great and seems genuinely nice. I'd definitely take another class with her.
Bowman was constantly unorganized and flustered by the projectors in the room. While nice and funny, she was not always clear and given than 60% of our grades were from 2 in-class essays, she did not teach us enough to write the tests. She also went through slides too quickly and since she did not post them, if you missed them that's it.
I found Ms. Bowman to be an OK professor. She loves her work which is nice to see, but her lectures are sometimes disjointed, and she often loses herself in thought. The actual content of the course was interesting however. Taking notes is essential, as she does not post many notes online. If you want an A, you better study more than you expect.
Great professor, very good presentation, handouts look great too.
Her lectures are confusing and she's not much help when you ask her questions. I emailed her with a question and she replied saying it was in the text. When I asked for more clarification she told me it's not in the text, and made a rude comment about how I should have known. She also goes through slides pretty fast and she's hard to follow.
There were only four tests through the entire semester (two MC quizzes and two in-class essays) and no final exam. She's incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about the material. Doing the readings is necessary for the tests, but if you turn up to the lectures and pay attention, it's pretty hard to fail.
Bowman is a passionate and interesting Prof. Very quirky and often goes off on tangents away from the subject at hand. The course was an easy A if you attend the lectures and have a grasp on subject matter, reading are optional but obviously help to do well. For the most part if you are in class paying attention you'll do fine.
Bowman is an energetic, knowledgable prof with a great sense of humour. She truly knows how to keep her students focused in on her lectures, which can be long and on drier subjects. She happily takes questions during class, and genuinely cares about her students. Take the time to outline your essay exams, and you'll be sure to pass! I Love Laurel
Excellent GRS professor! She is passionate about the subjects she lectures on, and has a lot of interesting quirky facts to perk up dry material. Her sense of humour is great, and she's all around a pleasant lady. I like her so much, that I will also be taking greek language with her. Show up to class, prep for exams, and you'll do fine!
I've taken several courses with Bowman now and she is one of my favourite profs! You do have to show up for class as she usually has a mini pop quiz at the beginning of each lecture but it's basically just a way of taking attendance. The question is super easy and you get to work in groups. If you're interested in gender dynamics she's great!
Fun class if you have any interest in Greek myth! The material is super interesting, and Bowman's lectures are usually interesting and humorous. She's often slow at posting her notes (not until a few days before the exams), but there's no final exam (2 m/c quizzes + 2 in-class essays) so going to class is usually the best way to do good here!
Her lectures were sometimes off topic but showed her enthusiasm. The first couple lectures were a bit sporadic but once you get to the gods and goddesses, it's easier to follow. Didn't receive the best feedback on essays, would've liked more; if you write about female depiction instead of male, you'll probably get an A.
Although she was very passionate about mythology, it seemed like she thought everyone knew more than we might have. She got off topic easily, and tried to cover too much once she realized she was behind. Try the class for a week, but there are only 4 assessments that make up your mark. 15+20% "quizzes" and 30+35% in class essays.
Dr. Bowman was obviously very passionate and well-read about Greek and Roman mythology, and wanted us all to feel the same way, but she probably went about it the wrong way. The lectures were very long-winded and often dull, although necessary to attend in order to pass the in-class quizzes.
Passionate speaker, knows what she is talking about, and gives interesting lectures. Two easy in-class quizzes and two in-class essays make up the entire grade.
Talks very fast, many students cannot keep up I did not learn a thing
An incredibly witty and insightful lecturer. Dr. Bowman is well spoken and knows her subject well. Her interpretation and explanations of the course content goes beyond the call of duty. I enjoyed this course much more than I had expected thanks to Dr. Bowman!
Laurel is a good prof! She is super passionate and knowledgeable. Tests are SUPER easy, but you must attend class in order to do well because her slides won't help you. In-class essays are harder but just put in some effort and you'll do fine. One problem: sometimes she goes off on boring tangents. Get feedback from from her on essays!!!
Greek and Roman Mythology was a really fun course, all thanks to Dr. Bowman's stories! Her lectures can be pretty disjointed (her lecture slides don't seem to match her stories very well), but the content was extremely fascinating. Grading was pretty easy: two MC quizzes and two in-class essays, plus a bonus if you wanted. Just take good notes!!
The class had super interesting material which was easy to learn. The multiple choice quizzes were easy, but the essays/exams were a lot more in depth and harder. She does give the essay topics before the exam day so make sure you practice them all and write out an outline.
Dr Bowman was my favourite prof last semester, she's really passionate about what she teaches. Just make sure to do the assigned readings and keep notes of anything she says in class that seems important but isn't on the slides. The multiple choice tests are simple, but make sure you know your stuff going into the essays.
Dr Bowman was awesome and super passionate about her class. She could get a little distracted sometimes but she always made the course material super interesting.
Couldn't help but feel her lectures were disorganized. Also very, very slow at returning our marks.
Dr. Bowman is a very good teacher and honestly, I don't know why her ratings for this class are so low. She is very understanding and set's her students up to do well while making sure they know all the material. Lovely woman, I can't wait to be in more of her classes!
Even with how difficult the transition to online learning was, I found myself having a great time learning about Greek and Roman myth from Prof. Bowman. She presents the topics in a interesting and engaging way and was friendly and easy to talk to.
Really engaging somewhat disorganized Prior knowledge of Greek myth is definitely required
She is a great professor but the course itself is very difficult. There is a lot of homework and a lot of in class learning. I have never cried over one class so much but I also have never learned so much of a language in such a short period of time.
A very knowledgeable professor.
Dr. Bowman was wonderful and is clearly passionate about what she teaches. She was very helpful during office hours and gave good advice. I am excited to take another class with her!
This is my second class with Bowman and I will absolutely be taking a third. The course itself is a lot of work but she gives plenty of opportunities to get work done in class and she also gives lots of half marks. She focuses on making sure you're learning the language rather than criticizing every little mistake you make. Loves her
Terrible lecturer, she cannot articulate herself and she is very disorganized. If you take this class it is a free credit but DO NOT buy the textbook and don't go to class (You will still pass). Her slides contain no useful information and listening to her speak is impossible. However, she is very responsive and kind and she returns grades quickly.
lots of reading, prior knowledge of myth is important, long extensive papers, hilarious lectures that are engaging, dont need to take super detailed notes, she is amazing at answering peoples questions
Never went to class after the third week, and still did fine by just doing the assignments. Buy the textbook as needed for the quizzes, but that will get you an B+ at least. The only thing is that she is super disorganized, I waited 3 weeks to get my final project, and 4 quizzes graded. She seems very nice, and this is a chill elective, just beware
Class is interesting and she's amazing!
