I would recommend Chiapetta if you aren't into math but you have to take Stat to fulfill a requirement. Lots of extra credit and extra help if you need it. You're better off reading the text and going to office hours to ask questions than going to lecture. Also, the current TA won't let you turn in a quiz if you have too many problems wrong.
Laurel is a very nice, and available lady. She will help you with questions you have. But her lectures are extremely boring, unorganized, and confusing. Her exams are difficult, but she will curve them sometimes. I had her for Stat & Probability for Bus Mgt. Take her stats class if you already know the basic concepts of statistics.
absolutely awful teacher. lectures are impossible to understand.. tests are ridiculous.. don't bother taking stat 1100 with her.. you will struggle
Bad teacher. poor teaching style. tries to be helpful, but what would be helpful is making the homeworks and tests easier so that half the class can pass.
The class isn't that hard if you do the homeworks. Her lectures are really boring and hard to follow, but go to her office hours because she is very helpful.
awesome professor. tests are hard as hell and sometimes homeworks are too. office hours with her though make everything easier. many bonus oppourtunities given as well. laurel is super helpful and if you ask for help, she'll do her best.
Laurel was very nice and helpful. The class is a good bit of work but not too difficult. I definitely recommend STAT with Laurel. If you do the work and put effort in, you should get no worse than a B.
I love her! I took her for stat200 and stat1100 and she was great. She makes her notes very clear. Always available and give many chances to make up points. HIGHLY recommended.
She is really knowledgable about Statistics...not only does she teach it but it's her profession and she's really into it. Personally, I'm only taking the course because I have to, I hate it though. But, having said that, she knows I am struggling and helps me immensely whenever I ask. She's great!
Laurel was really helpful. This wasn't my favorite class, but it certainly wasn't a drag. She gave extra credit to help make up for mistakes, but you shouldn't bank on it. Give it your best and you'll do well.
God bless her, she was nice as pie...but a horrible teacher. I'm sure she'd be really great at another stat job, just not teaching. Her one test was so hard that she said everyone did bad so we could do test corrections. Like if everyone did bad, it's obviously not the students fault. Homework was hard and collected weekly and graded.
Nice, sweet lady, but difficult to follow at times. Tries to be helpful, but lectures are incredibly boring and tend to be unclear. Good person, without a doubt.
OMG whats wrong with you people. laurel is a great professor. classes are boring but they're not mandatory. she gives u so much help with whatever you need. i have probably emailed her about 50 times asking questions. the thing is, STATISTICS is difficult but she made it easy for me! TAKE HER, I SAY!
Laurel is a great professor and a very sweet lady. The class itself is boring and difficult but she tries to make it fun by using interesting examples and playing games in class such as millionaire & roulette for extra credit points. Attendance is not mandatory, but she gives away a lot of extra credit so it is in your best interest to go.
she is probably one of the easisest professors ever. she calculates your grade from a variety of sources, not just exams. do well in the homeworks, and that will definitely help. the online quizzes can be tricky but they will boost your grade. and if the class does bad on an exam she curves it. she also offers a lot of chances for extra credit.
Nice person, pretty boring lectures, is helpful and you can reach her easily if you ask for help. The tests were extremely easy, as she posted practice exams with answers beforehand. I stopped going to lectures most of the time and wasn't interested in the subject, and still got an A.
I LOVE LAUREL! She's one of the nicest and easiest to talk to professors at Pitt. Not only that, she goes out of her way to meet with students for help. Also really enjoys chatting with all the students. It's too bad she doesn't teach history or something--I'd so sign up! I simply cannot say enough nice things about Laurel!
Had Laurel last semester. I went to four classes and ended up with a solid A, but I didn't really learn anything. I don't remember anything from that class. All the lecture notes are posted online, so don't bother going to class. All exams are nearly identical to the practice exams, and a cheat sheet is allowed during the final.
Class was boring..but it's the nature of the subject. Laurel is nice and fun and tries to keep class interesting and is definitely willing to answer any of your questions. Study and do the work and you'll get an A. She also gets to know her students...says hi everytime i see her outside of class.
i definately recommend taking her to anyone who has to take stats. hw's are a pain but the class really isnt that hard and shes really nice
Very nice lady. Curves test, etc to help student. Not that hard of a class if you study a bit and do the homeworks. Homeworks are annoying but definitely boost your grade.
To start with, Laurel is hot! Her lecture's are kind of boring but her extra credit is clutch in the end. I had an 83 but it got boosted to a B+. The online quizzes and homework boost your grade significantly and the final is not bad.
Very easy class. Tests are somewhat difficult, but she allows a cheatsheet on them. The homework can be a pain but boosts your grade. I reccomend investing in a Solutions Manual from Amazon.com so you get full points. Also hands out bonus points in recitation so ATTEND them. I'd definitely reccomend her. Horror stories of other stat110 profs.
Absolutely fantastic. As profs go, she's a superstar. If you have to take a STAT class and she's available - take her. Homework can be a burden at times, but it's a math class - what do you expect? Tests are nearly identical to practice exams & you get to make a cheat sheet. TWO cheat sheets for the final. Easy A, plus you learn something.
super nice teacher. take her! Homework can involve some annoying excel and problems at points, but go to Recitation and the TAs will help. Also, go to recitation because once a semester there is a HUGE extra credit quiz thing, which is clutch. lectures not necessary. Chiappetta GETS college kids. perfect
Gorgeous, funny, intelligent lady. Always nice and reasonable. Give clear and detailed lectures. Homework and weekly quizzes are kind of annoying, though.
She was probably the best teacher I had at Pitt so far. Had a great balance of being able to be laid back and fun while making sure her students knew the material she was teaching. Sufficient amount of time to do homework and to get help if needed. Recitations are mandatory but the ta's show you how to do the hw problems so that your hw is correct.
Laurel is a very very nice person and is easy to get to know outside of class. Gives TONS of bonus so don't worry if you do bad on an exam...that said, very disorganized and assigns HW's the day before its due. The class is a pain but you'll still do well if you take her.
Homework direction are completely nonsensical. Need to clarify with TA what she actually wants you to do. Lectures are useless.
extremely disorganized
She is really nice and rather attractive, but the class is poorly organized. Homework is all computer based, but for tests you do everything by hand. I didn't learn a thing, but she has a fair amount of bonus opportunities to even things out. It seemed like the only kids who weren't lost and did well had some sort of stat background prior to.
Extremely unorganized and not clear at all. She goes on tangents that have nothing to do with the material, and assigns homeworks that are pointless. Doesn't do practice problems so it's hard to completely understand the material. Overall a terrible professor.
To say she is disorganized is such an understatement. For her online section she doesn't use any consistent or logical means of updating assignments (will randomly open a new folder, use it once, open a new folder, never mention it, etc.), doesn't post announcements, and DOESN'T RESPOND TO E-MAILS. Shouldn't be employed as a teacher, period.
she was extremely disorganized. there was an error on every sing exam. she would not teach things and then expect you to know them for the exam. she would return exams the class before the next one, and would post the grades late, so you would have not clue as how well you were doing in the class. would give attitude when asked questions.
With previous stat experience, the class is easily manageable and she allows full page of cheat sheets for exams. But she is extremely disorganized, posts homeworks and quizzes the day before they're due but they aren't hard. I would take her again.
The first month of the semester I thought Laurel was a good instructor. I don't know what happened but she became really disorganized and expected us to understand things we never learned. She was a fair grader and gave lots of extra points but if you aren't willing to teach yourself, you will not do well. It's unfortunate because she's so nice.
She is NOT a good teacher. She gives homework and quizzes on material that we won't learn for another week. Her online exams have errors in them too, so even if you get every answer right, you won't get a perfect. She is so unorganized and unclear. If i didn't have a stats background, I would be screwed. That being said, she is a nice lady.
She is extremely unorganized and helpless. She forgets the formulas and not even sure what she is teaching is correct or not. Lectures are boring. All you can do is that reading your textbook and depend on your luck on the exams. This is the worst of the worst class that I have ever taken and I would not recommend her class to anyone.
I absolutely loved Laurel! Such a sweet lady with a pleasant disposition. I had prior stats classes in high school, so this class was a breeze. Exams are a bit tricky and homework was redundant and lengthy at times, but she gives a lot of extra credit... overall an easy A. Definitely take LC!!
What a mess. Seriously an awful teacher sorry.
Had a background in Stats, so class wasn't too hard. Practice tests were identical to exams, cheat sheet for test as well. Knows everyone in the class by name, despite very low class participation. The homework is awful, but she is one attractive woman. Not from personal experience, but I heard office hours are helpful if you "come" to them.
Overall terrible professor. Scribbles examples on the board for the entire class without explaining anything and expects everyone to understand it. My TA had to teach me everything in recitation. Gives homework assignments that are meaningless and exams are ridiculously hard. Went to her for help once, she ended up texting her friend at the bar...
She is a complete mess, as the other comments say. She is nice, but her lectures are confusing and she doesn't explain the material well at all. Even the TAs are confused as to what's actually going on. Only reason this class is doable the extra credit she gives, and if you just complete the HW you are fine. Sucks at answering e-mails.
Ridiculously disorganized is an understatement. She's a wonderful person, and gives a lot of extra credit and has a big curve at the end of the year. Showed me the details of her grades, literally only about 5% of people get Cs or below. The HWs are difficult and tedious, but make up more than 50% of your final grade. All in all, I recommend her.
Very disorganized and unclear.
Laurel has a great class and is so helpful. I went to a lot of her personal review sessions and office hours. TAs were not helpful. Would definitely recommend her as a professor because she definitely wants the best for students.
Laurel's class is possibly the easiest A you can find at Pitt. She basically gives you free points from her quizzes. The HW's are time consuming but they stack your grade even more. Be ready to learn absolutely nothing because although laurel is great, she couldn't even teach you how to walk. Final was so remedial it wasn't even funny.
Horrible. Class was hard, and she isn't around to clarify anything. Good luck trying to email her, she might get back to you within a week. TA was foreign and useless, as was this class. Would not recommend to my enemy. That said, Laurel is a really nice lady.
Pretty easy. HW is worth a lot. Allowed to have a cheat sheet for the tests. Final is a breeze. Quizzes are extra credit after a certain amount of points. Overall, easy class and would take it again. Definitely recommend.
Horrible professor, learned absolutely nothing in this class. Mainly group activities in class and makes student look things up and tell the rest of the class about it. Exams were nothing like anything done in class, in homework or on quizzes. Teach everything to yourself. Also does not respond to emails and very slow on giving back grades.
Laurel is seriously the worst professor I've ever had. She does not care about her students at all. Take her if you enjoy teaching yourself statistics, like having someone ignore your emails and doing confusing group work. My advice: AVOID.
Lessons were discussion based; we got in small groups and researched material rather than listen to her lecture. If I did not have a background in stats from high school I would have been very confused. Tests are fairly easy--she lets you take a note sheet with as much information as you can fit. Overall, very disorganized.
Class Is very time consuming with lots of homework and online quizzes but they help your grade so much. Test are easy, final is a joke. She's extremely disorganized but if you reach out to her and go to office hours she's very helpful. I think she's a great lady but I understand why people were frustrated. Easiest of stats profs but wont learn much
As everyone says, horribly disorganized. Took it as an online class. She scheduled "class time" and then never logged in to have class. Examples were little more than scribbles. She was unavailable when trying to contact. Absolutely no help or use what so ever. Avoid like the plague
Easy class to do well in, but she's just a bad teacher. Very disorganized. Really sweet lady though.
Difficult class-- lectures often didn't utilize the PowerPoints she posted online. Relied mostly on the book for clarification, but tests didn't seem to reflect this material either. Permits one page of notes for exams, but few multiple choice questions quickly diminish the chance of A's and B's. Studied especially hard.
She's a nice person but an awful professor. Lectures are confusing, and she's extremely disorganized. She doesn't follow the syllabus AT ALL, and makes changes to due dates and homework policies midway though the semester. It's fortunate that this class is easy independent of the prof, but don't take it with her if you can at all help it.
Be ready to learn material on your own...
Hardest easy class I've ever taken. For those wo Stats experience, you will likely feel confused 90% of the time, making it difficult to feel confident on exams, even when you study days in advance. Still, with 100% on homeworks and quizzes, an A is possible wo learning much of anything--AKA much unneeded frustration + stress. Avoid if possible.
Laurel's honestly one of the nicest people I've met in my life. She learned my name in a class of 100 and says hi to me outside of class. That said, she's the most disorganized, confusing, and terrible professor I've ever heard of. Her class is super easy, but she leaves you so confused. Can't believe how disorganized she was. Kinda funny actually.
This course was like a self study. Her teaching style is terribly confusing.. She creates a weird new syllabus and doesn't follow the original one. We kept asking her to post PowerPoint but she was disorganized and non-responsive . She always ignores her students emails. So be ready to help your self. She is the worst instructor I have ever had.
Nothing clear, try to avoid her.
Terrible. She's incredibly disorganized, and is little help in class or office hours. Her teaching method is very scattered and unclear, and you'll find yourself struggling to teach yourself the basic things she, at the very least, should have mentioned. Avoid at all costs.
I heard lots of negative things about her and now after taking the class I can say that Laurel is un-qualified to teach Stats. Horrible person who I don't recommend to anyone.
She's confusing and I always come back from class feeling like I haven't learned anything. I wish she would read straight off her power points and teach from them, instead she posts them and expects you to read them before class and then never even talks about them. This is my 2nd time taking stat 0200 and I am still just as confused and worried.
I have just finished her course and basically I learned NOTHING from her class. Literally the worst professor I have ever had. Do yourself a favor and avoid her.
she is a great teacher. i highly recommend. she is an easy A
laurel is a very nice women. Her lectures are very clear and precise. Her class is easy and i would definitely take again. Take her class for a good grade
Everyone says her class is very hard but I think her class is very helpful and easy. She is always there to help you succeed in her class. She wants you to do well. I would take her class again because it was an easy A
Honestly probably one of the worst professors I've had at Pitt. Didn't learn much of anything from this class, other than how useless she is at teaching. Very unorganized, unclear about grades, barely responds to emails, and seemingly doesn't really care much about her students. Take her if you must, but I'd reccommend someone else.
Stats is good but laurel is one of the worst instructors I have ever met in my life. Avoid her at all costs
Laurel is the worst instructor I have ever had in my life. Do yourself a favor and avoid her.
Laurel lectures were out of order and unorganized and she was not helpful at all. I regretted taking her class.
Again, the course was not bad but Laurel was the most confusing person as she kept changing the way and the date of assignment submissions in a terrible way. Don't take Laurel unless you have to.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. Tried to drop out the first week but my adviser encouraged me to go through with it. What a mistake. Skipping class is pretty much the equivalent of going to class. She makes everything harder than necessary. HW is ridiculously hard, so are the tests. Doesn't respond to emails ever. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Avoid her at all costs. Her class and lectures are extremely confusing. The other professors seemed more knowledgeable. Wouldn't recommend her at all.
I agree 100% with the person below who says skipping class is the same as attending. Really confused how she is still a professor here. She couldn't care less about her students and makes that very evident.
She was honestly terrible. I was enrolled in stat 0200 and half my papers had stat 1100 as the header. If you're going to teach us business statistics, at least pretend that it's the right class and change the header. She was very disorganized and the only saving grace was my TA. 0/10 would not recommend.
Would not recommend. Lectures aren't very clear at times. Sometimes she is disorganized when writing on the board and explaining things. Homeworks are fairly easy. Sometimes she lets out class early which is nice. Exams are tough. If you've had stat before, go for it. If not, I would go with someone else. She dresses nice though...
Laurel is the most unprofessional person you could ever deal with. She doesn't quietly understand Stats and her confusion is reflected on her lectures. Don't recommend here to anyone.
Laurel is very unclear in lectures, and hard to follow. However, she structures her class so that homework is very important (easy to get 100's on), online quizzes matter (they're easy and she drops the lowest), and exams are easy if you study the book. Overall if you put in some time she's an easy A, and hey, she's pretty attractive too.
Very unorganized. Confused a lot of the time. But she gives a lot of extra credit. An A is definitely possible. She's a sweetheart though. And her legs and butt aren't half bad either. However, her skirts may be too short to be professional times though
She has the least professional behavior you can ever deal with and her lectures were pretty confusing. For grades, she just gives grades based on her perceptions and preferences.
Worst professor ever.
She is the most unprofessional teacher I have ever witnessed, She has dressed in extremely unprofessional clothes and she has shown up at least 10 minutes late to class multiple times. Do not take her.
Laurel is the WORST professor I have ever taken. Most unprofessional teacher ever. so disorganized and you will pass by doing well on quizzes and homework. She will show up late and will never reply to your email. good luck.
Easy class, but she doesn't really teach. You will have to teach yourself, but you can find the homework online and the exams are just like the practice ones she gives you to review on course web. If you're looking to actually learn Statistics, take another professor.
Lectures are extremely disorganized and you will leave class feeling confused. She's sometimes late. Be prepared to teach yourself a lot of the material on your own. She uses old homeworks from years ago so the questions don't always line up with what you've learned in class. I would recommend finding a different prof.
super easy grader...
