This was her first year teaching this class and it's been amazing so far. Super approachable.
Such an awesome professor, such a nice person. She is truly devoted to her students. She puts tons of effort into making sure students are able to succeed. Additionally, she is every organized and direct.
I like how organized she is. She really uses Canvas to the fullest. Even if you miss some lectures, there are great resources on the canvas that helps you catch up. Because the class size is 500, you don't get a personal interaction with her unless you go to her office hours. She seems nice though and she is a perfect professor for an entry course.
she nice, bio 13 not nice she taught a 500 person lecture and did an OK job. tests are 25 multiple choice questions and the class average is usually in the 80s. all lectures are recorded and posted online but you do get easy participation points just for showing up. long live locrowe
Tests are challenging, but there is easy 100 % credit that makes up for it. Dr. Crowe really cares about doing a good job and giving engaging lectures, and honestly with this big of a class, I don't think she could be doing any better. She is a great professor, and I would love to take a smaller class with her. To reiterate, long live locrowe.
Professor Crowe is great! She's teaching a massive class but she still does her best to be accessible to everyone. She is fair with her grading, and you can definitely get an A in this class if you try. 10/10 would recommend!
If you take the time outside of class to meet with her or to email her, her answers are very helpful. Considering bio13 is a 500 person class, she does a very good job. However, sometimes the content she covers is not congruent with the textbook and sometimes you question why you even read the textbook.
Definitely not bad for her first year teaching, especially given the class size. If you put in a good effort, it's pretty easy to get an A. Exams are 25 multiple choice questions and are sometimes poorly worded and/or seem kind of pointless, but grading is not exam-heavy. There are many other categories that are easy to get full credit on.
Dr. Crowe provided all the resources a student could possibly need to succeed in this class. She adapted extremely well to mid-semester feedback, and clearly wanted all students to succeed. She posts videos of every lecture as well as annotated slides and some homework videos, so you really can learn at your own pace. Overall, great at her job.
She moves quickly in her lectures and they can be hard to follow. She doesn't explain things that well. I found that I had to teach the material to myself and had to do a lot of work outside of class. She gives learning objectives but they don't reflect the level of difficulty of the exam. Do-able to do well, but not taught well, tests only 25 mc.
Crowe is a good professor. She was obviously very committed towards the course and wanted to do her best. Unfortunately, during her first semester teaching Bio13 she was very unorganized, tried to squeeze in too much information, and the tests were extremely unorganized. Grading scheme is also very unfair, as a 90-100 is an A, whereas an 80-90 is B
This year was her first year teaching the class and she did a great job. Most other reviews complain about the tests and their content, but that's because they rely solely on the learning objectives provided and memorize those, rather than understanding the concepts and how they relate, to study. Tests are 25 mc, possible to get 2% of extra credit.
Prof Crowe is great! Very caring and always available for clearing things up! This was her first year teaching at Tufts. I think she did a good job considering that the class was almost 450 students. Exams are super short (25 MC) but quite wordy and application-based. Lectures are long and wordy but you have to put in the work.
Great class but beware is lab heavy!
She is an amazing person and a great teacher. She really spends a lot of time explaining concepts and gave us a quiz every week to see what we needed help on. She would then talk about the answers in class. We had a final paper about a chosen disease where she randomly assigned groups.
Taken Fall 2020, virtual. The online class was very easy, and did not grade you on much. I expect there are students who were not learning the course content, but still got an A or B. The class gives you what you put in: all the class resources are there, you are able to learn and succeed if you put in 7 hours a week. Very clear weekly schedule
Very organized prof with clear criteria. Weekly discussion boards, problem sets (2 tries each) and quizzes/case studies every other week. Gives quiz corrections. Not difficult to get an A. Go to office hours for your questions.
Dr. Crowe was great at explaining/clarifying concepts. Go to her office hours -- she's more than willing to help you. Content is super interesting -- made me re-consider bio as a major. Also assigned a group project based off of a disease of interest, which was cool.
Dr. Crowe is amazing! She excels at clearly explaining concepts and is more than willing to help clarify them. She wants her students to succeed and that is evident in her course structure (test corrections!), prompt responses and willingness to meet with students. She emphasizes lab methodologies. If you took Bio13 with her Bio46 will be easy!
Check-in quizzes every class which are quite annoying and stressful, so attending lectures is pretty much mandatory. Lots of assignments and work every week. However, professor is quite good at explaining material; she often moves quite quickly but still does a thorough job. Overall, not too hard to do well but you must keep up with all the work.
Shes very rigid in her rubric and will not bend even when it comes to extenuating circumstances. This comes off as inconsiderate to many students which makes her less approachable even though she has a lot of office hours.
A great professor. She is extremely understanding and flexible. She tries her best to keep her lectures engaging and will come up to you personally if she notices you struggling in a lecture of 200+ students. Super accessible outside of class and no midterms or finals which is a plus. She does go a little fast during lectures though.
Typical bio lecture, basically AP again. She reads slides, clearly knows what's going on though. It's like slides are based off of her lectures, not other way around. 5-6 online quizzes + weekly problem sets make up final grade(some of lab too). Liked it, engaging teacher and overall not too hard. Recommend over bio 14, more interesting/broad.
Crowe obviously cares SO MUCH about her class, but it's far too much. There is so much useless busy work, and a lot of wasted time in class trying to force us to do group work. She really wants to hold your hand through basic ideas, and really over-organizes and micromanages. She doesn't seem to remember she's teaching adults, not kindergartners.
Such an incredible woman. She is so so smart and very organized. Class definitely was not the easiest but there are so many assignments and opportunities to get good grades that anyone could be fine. She was so nice
Dr. Crowe is very understanding and supportive. She places a lot of emphasis on learning over grades and we can tell from the way assignments are weighed. She really cares about the students and wants everyone to succeed. The class has a lot of work and it was way more time consuming than I expected. Still learned a lot from her.
BIO46 has to be one of my favorite Biology courses at Tufts thus far. The class is difficult and has a lot of work but if you put in the work, your efforts will be rewarded. Crowe is one of the best Biology professors that I have had the privilege of taking at Tufts. She cares about her students so much and truly does want you to succeed!
Dr. Crowe deeply cared about the subject and her students. Admittedly, there is a lot of work and the material is assessed to ensure that students are able to apply all of it, which can be difficult. However, this course felt like the most worthwhile course that I genuinely learned so much from. She allows different ways to demonstrate learning.
I love Dr. Crowe! A lot of people critique her for "busy work" but she honestly gives you those things to engrain necessary information in your brain. Also, keep in mind Bio 13 is an introductory course so if you have a background with bio you might get a little bored, but shes still awesome!
Way too much work. The class is full of busy work, discussion posts, quizzes, and unnecessary groupwork. She's not terrible, but her class is the workload of 3 classes combined.Maybe she's better in other classes, but this class and her format are too much. I go to all her office hours, and I've never felt so behind in a class. Would not recommend
Dr. Crowe is very organized in terms of class structure and expectations. However, I find that she can be monotone and talks fast during her lectures and that she has the tendency to breeze through important concepts.
She talks way too fast and squeezes too much information during lectures so I end up having to teach myself the material outside of class to understand what's going on. The workload every week is also very overwhelming. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you don't have to.
Wasn't bad, but the lectures were not helpful to me. She moves really quickly and I spent most of my time teaching the content to myself. As long as you studied and worked to understand content, it's not too difficult to do well on assignments. One nice thing is that a 90-100 is an A, an 80-89.9 is a B, etc.
so so so much fucnking busy work do not take bio if u dont have to
Dr. Crowe is one of the most accessible professors at Tufts. Besides her office hours, which happen 2x a week, she also has 1-on-1 appontments where you can talk to her about pretty much anything. Her lectures are dense but extremely informative. I find a lot of her "busy work" to be really helpful and she's a fantastic professor overall!
She truly is a kind person when you speak with her, but I really do not like her as a bio13 professor. Her lectures are very fast, and she does not explain concepts well. I taught myself the entire semester through youtube videos. Also, a lot of busy work and small assignments, which makes the course less test-heavy, but also time-consuming.
Lecture heavy, but is clearly passionate about her students learning
Class is full of busy work, but the quizzes are the most difficult and most important thing to look out for. Application-based questions, nothing is ever easy. Class's difficulty depends on if/when you took AP Bio in HS, if you took it senior year it'll be so much easier. Dr. Crowe is nice, and always available, but she's in a hard weed-out class.
Dr. Crowe is clear in her explanations and cares deeply about making students comfortable in her lectures. Quizzes and exams are all multiple choice and students are given two chances on problem sets (which are assigned weekly). The one thing to note is that participation and attendance are mandatory, so you can't just watch the online lectures.
Really nice and engaging professor. Bio 13 is a 400+ person lecture so it made sense that Dr. Crowe couldn't be as personable with everyone. As long as you study and take thoughful notes, you'll be fine. Easy multiple-choice exams too!
There's a lot of work, but none of it is busy work. A lot isn't even required but is given to help you better understand the material which I really appreciated. The content itself for the class is really hard. She doesn't give "-" grades; 90-100 is all an A, 80-89 is all a B, etc
I didn't take AP Bio in high school and struggled in this class. The lectures are a LOT to take in, she packs in a lot of information and isn't the most engaging as she's basically just reading off the slides. But her office hours are SUPER helpful, and really engaging.
she explained things on a general basis but then expected people to understand them deeply on the test. There were 4 quizzes that were online that seemed like they wld be easy, but the questions were tongue twisters. You need to understand the material vastly to do well. There were a lot of buffer grades that help and can carry.
Dr Crow cares a lot about learning science and really wants students to get the most out of the course. The grading does not use pluses or minuses. the readings and video hw was redundant and there wasn't too much to do outside of class. Attendence is mandatory and tracked which is annoying considering its a huge lecture
Dr. Crowe is an ok lecturer; she gives decently clear and helpful explanations of most things but goes out of order and sometimes makes the concepts harder than they need to be. Most of the work feels like boring busy work and assignments are very easy. She does a good job being accessible to students given it's a 400+ person class.
As somebody who did not get to take AP Bio in HS, BIO 13 was definitely hard. However, Prof. Crowe is very caring and will make sure that you get the support you need. Lectures are fast-paced and content heavy, but her office hours are very helpful; she goes over questions one-by-one and will reexplain topics thoroughly.
Class will be straight-forward if you have a strong bio/chem background. Exams were straight forward and were administered online. Recommend reading the textbook.
Fast-paced lectures but Dr. Crowe supplemented this with lots of office hours and study materials. Dr. Crowe may come across as harsh but she is actually very caring and takes time to answer all of your questions. Bio 13 requires a lot of studying but it is very possible to get an A.
Great class that is very well organized. Dr. Crowe is intelligent, informative, and always had great lectures that greatly aided my learning.
i appreciated the meticulously organized course and she is a clear lecturer. all the assignments will feel like a slog to get through but the intention of each one is always clear and helps with learning the material. labs can feel long but are not terribly difficult. stay on top of due dates bc it easily can become overwhelming
If you havent taken ap bio in hs you will struggle in this class
She was fine. The material and the class is a slug to get through and I frequently got bored during the lectures. Participation is a huge part of class grade so you have to go to lecture. All assignments are online through problem sets/quizzes.
She is clearly extremely caring about how you do in the class and it is clear by how she grades (offering quiz corrections, dropping lowest problem set grade, and a pretty big curve on the exams). Lectures are long and the overall content is pretty tricky but she explains it well and is always there to ask questions.
Great professor and super kind and understanding and overall a great human being. But unless you already know AP Bio or have a lot of bio background, the class will be super overwhelming and move very quickly. Quizzes are online and take home (but still hella hard). Grades are done by Task
Dr. Crowe is fine. Her lectures are extremely boring, and if you haven't taken AP Bio, there is a lot of information that is difficult to comprehend. She is relatively accessible outside of class, considering how many people are in the lecture.
You can tell that she cares about her students and is passionate about teaching. She is a good lecturer and tells you what will be on quizzes. However, the quizzes and exams are difficult and you must know the material extremely well and understand it. Overall, a good class but wouldn't recommend unless it's a required class for pre-med or major.
Crowe isn't great at explaining topics. Even though this is an intro bio course, I found the content to be relatively detailed and in-depth which can be a good thing or a bad thing. There is a ton of work for this class though so be ready to spend a decent chunk with busy work and quizzes. Overall, the course is not difficult, but it requires time.
She's the best!
I wouldnt say that bio 13 is super easy, but it's definitely doable. I feel like people don't give crowe enough credit for how organized and on top of things she is, which i really appreciate. She is one of the best professors at tufts even tho lectures can feel a little overwhelming with info
Adequate professor for class of this size, pretty much reads off slides & no opportunity for direct interaction unless u reach out, but isnt particularly annoying. Participation not an issue if u know someone who can tell u when PollEv questions are live. Wkly psets w/ 2 attempts great for helping grade, but quizzes quite difficult for intro course
Lauren Crowe is fine. Her lectures are extremely boaring and she cares more about finishing the slides than providing effective explanations of concepts. BIO 13 is not that difficult of a coarse but it is pretty boring. Only take this course if you have to.
If you haven't taken AP bio, this will be a challenging course, but Professor Crowe does everything she can to help her students succeed. There are plenty of resources available, weekly problem sets have 2 attempts, exams are relatively easy and MCQ with a redacted version posted beforehand, and quizzes are take-home.
Professor Crowe is a good lecturer. The class has way too many assignments, and its difficult to bring your grade up or maintain it if you slip up once.
Very organized. I thought concepts were clearly explained but it definitely helps to have taken AP Bio. Quiz questions were sometimes a bit tricky but lots of padding with problem sets. Lectures are recorded if you need to review something and she holds her own office hours as do the TAs.
Basically like AP Bio, but if you do the work you'll be fine. Don't really need the textbook.
Help was always accessible through Piazza, office hours, and Canvas resources. Dr. Crowe was a genuinely caring person and was invested in our learning. Quizzes occur frequently (every 2-3 weeks), but they are manageable, especially w/ quiz corrections. If you've taken AP Bio, the class shouldn't be too hard, but stay on top of pre-work for class.
Class was soooo boring but easy. Her tests felt more like "can I trick you" instead of "what do you know". Decent class
Honestly this class wasnt hard but I was really bored, I am not really interested in bio so thats part of it. Midterm and final were 20% of my grade each, they give you outlines for each of them that are a redacted version of the actual exam and you should use those to study for sure.
organized lectures w/ all the information you need, hw videos help but lectures are more important, lots of graded things so not super test heavy, quiz corrections, lots of study material (comprehension worksheets, problem sets, redacted test documents, study questions), quizzes are online/take home
Crowe is a good lecturer and you can really tell she wants us to learn, but her class is filled with way too much busywork, speeds through content, and expects you to memorize so much for exams its overwhelming especially if you're already taking hard STEM courses. Most of class is spent reading primary literature rather than reviewing material.
Dr. Crowe is the best professor I've had at Tufts. She is SO caring and really wants us to succeed. This class is a lot of work, and I spent a lot of time studying for it, but she grades so many things and offers alot of extra credit so it's fairly easy to do well if you put the work in. Lots of content, but worth it! Plus a fun project at the end.
Classes were mostly spent reviewing primary scientific literature - I learned how to read papers, very valuable in STEM. Pre-work included mini-lectures + readings. Lots of studying done outside of class. 3 tests and 1 final research paper. Weekly check-in quizzes. Dr. Crowe really wants you to learn and succeed - understanding and accommodating.
be prepared to take notes during lecture (must be paying attention), PollEv to gauge participation during lecture, pre-work is mandatory for success/understanding, overall very fun and interesting, handwriting is a little hard to read during lectures and moves fast
BIO13 is a great course of freshmen because you are given a lot of material and opportunities to actively recall lecture information; however, as a sophomore this class is very low on my priority list so often feels like busy work. She is a good professor but must put in the work to do well. Lecture heavy and pollev questions required.
Is a great lecturer and is a good beginning bio class to take. Exams are pretty fair and she gives out redacted version which you can study before. Has case studies which can be annoying if your partner is unresponsive.
Dr. Crowe is very eloquent in her lectures. She really knows what she is talking about and you can definitely tell she has a passion for biology. She was always prepared and taught with such enthusiasm. I really appreciated her silly comments throughout the lecture and her efforts to instill active learning/recall.
Professor Crowe is extremely clear in her lectures, and the class is organized very well. Requires a lot of work outside of class if you haven't taken AP Bio, but exams are all multiple choice and a redacted exam is provided before the midterm and final. Only unit that was confusing was cellular respiration, so I would just watch a vid for that!
I did not enjoy my time in Crowe's BIO13 lecture. It is evident that she does not care about her students. The class itself is not too hard, and all of the other assignments will boost your grade if you don't do too well on the midterm/final. Just a bad professor, boring and uninterested in the students. Do not take.
Dr. Crowe is clearly a very intelligent woman who knows quite a lot about biology. However, I think she forgets this is an INTRO class. While the exams were easy peasy (studying the night before and getting A+), her lectures are basically word salads that make concepts feel 1000x more confusing. Pro tip: just study the comprehension sheets.
Dr. Crowe is very kind and provides a lot of resources for students, such as redacted versions of exams and comprehension sheets. That being said, you have to put in an immense amount of time in out of class in order to do well on the tests. Her questions are very tricky and very very specific
Dr. Crowe was a good professor overall - she was accessible outside of class time and seemed to care about her students. She also had a very organized structure for the class, which was nice. However, you will need to spend a lot of time on this class's work, and make sure you get familiar with how she asks questions (they are VERY specific).
Take Bio 13 with Crowe! She is very kind, knowledgeable and is accessible for extra help. Course is graded on various easy assignments, two quizzes, a midterm, and final exam. The two exams are not hard and redacted versions are provided. Study those immensely and predict all possible questions that could be asked. Use Echo360 to review lectures!
All information needed is in lectures. Psets are open-note, you get 2 attempts, not too hard. Case studies (random group) graded more harshly, not worth much. 2 online quizzes, difficulty depends on your questions, quiz corrections after. Midterm/final not cumulative, redacted versions provided, still hard. Lots of resources & support if you use it
Dr. Crowe was a great lecturer and made a lot of boring concepts interesting. Although sometimes she would graze over complex topics and not go that in depth. Overall it was a pretty easy class.
Loved. Class time was engaging with multiple activities (review, lecture, group-work, primary-lit reading). Exams could be tough, but it was clear what would be tested. The primary lit readings (some called it busy-work) were quick, graded on completion, part of exam prep, and genuinely practical to go through. Dr. Crowe is nice and knowledgeable.
Great professor, but BIO 13 is just one of the hardest introductory courses at Tufts.
Really caring professor--one of the best at Tufts. Goes out of the way to make sure you understand material if you're struggling. Highly encourage taking a class with her.
Dr. Crowe is an amazing professor. I've had her for both BIO13 and BIO46, and her ability to explain concepts and teach in an engaging and effective way is incredible. She's so sweet and understanding, and office hours are very helpful. She provides amazing resources and really helps equip her students to do well in her class. I love her!
Dr. Crowe is a very knowledgeable professor. However, it seems she's not very considerate of students' time. The amount of workload she expects from her students in a 3-credit class is simply undoable if you are taking other STEM classes/doing research, and want to do well in class. Pre-work and all the other assignments take about 10 hr per week!!
Dr. Crowe is very organized and her lectures are easy to follow. There are weekly problem sets, case study groups, and take home quizzes with a final. While it can be a lot of work sometimes, it is always very clear what you need to do and things are generally weighted in a good way that evens out tests with other things.
I was forced to take Bio13, but Crowe made it a lot better to deal with. Considering I never payed attention and bombed the midterm and final while walking out pretty much fine in terms of grades, you'll be fine as long as you do all the work, quiz corrections, and do the pollEV.
Dr. Crowe is my favorite professor that I have had at Tufts. I had her for BIO13 and BIO46. She is very kind and caring and she knows SO MUCH about biology it is pretty crazy. BIO46 is interesting but you have to do a lot of work studying/doing homework because there is just alot to memorize. Take this course but be aware it is not easy!
Dr. Crowe is an incredible lecturer and clearly cares so much about her students. It feels like a lot of assignments and pre-work for only a 3 credit class, but most of it really does feel necessary and help you absorb the content better. It's a lot of content but the comprehension worksheets make it pretty clear what you're expected to know.
Pretty poor lecturer and slides are all over the place. The course is formatted similar to something you'd see in middle-high school and you'll likely feel like you're wasting your tuition. That being said she is very accessible outside of class and wants you to succeed.
I really liked Dr. Crowe. People complain that she goes quickly but most of those people don't do the prework... Her explanations of topics are really clear and she seems to enjoy teaching and care about her students. The exams are not fun because it's literally just 25 mcqs but there are lots of other free points. Definitely take Bio13 with Crowe.
Crowe is definitely a great professor who is clearly passionate about Biology. She explains concepts the best she can although sometimes she can go a bit fast in lectures. If you haven't taken AP Bio in highschool, then you will definitely struggle with this class. There's a lot of independent studying you're going to be doing outside of class.
Dr. Crowe is wonderful! The prework lectures and reading are always very helpful, and she does a great job of building off every topic without it feeling disjointed. She can explain any concept in 5 different ways if you're struggling, and offers multiple ways to get back points on both quizzes and the midterm. Would absolutely take her class again
Due to the class size, it's almost impossible to have one-on-one interaction with her, but she is not a bad professor. The class is easy if you keep up with problem sets every week and try not to lose any points from HW, case study, or the discussion board. The redacted exams (midterm and final) help a lot.
