Great professor! So willing to help in labs. She will take the time to answer your questions, no matter how trivial they might be.
Just go to her office hours, you'll see.
very intersting lecture/lab. intense writing course, but learned alot in this class.
Dr Liets is amazing. I wanna be her. She enlightens you with amazing explanations in office hours, is a huge help during lab (stays there for the 10 or more hours), answers all questions clearly, doesnt make you feel stupid, knows much more than what she teaches, etc. Lectures are clear and organized and tests are fair.
LOVE her, LOVE her, LOVE her. She is a genius. Omg, and she is so down to earth. For our chicken lab, she stayed way into the night helping us with the methods. Very clear lecturer, and fair grading. Challenging material, but its supposed to be! Dr. Liets should get an award for her continued effort to inspire her students, she is proud of us
Her first time teaching it, she just read ahead and lectured on that. But the material is very interesting: heroin, cocaine, marijuana, alcohol & nicotine. The class will probably improve after shes had some practice
She's great! I actually never attended an entire class and I still pulled off and A without the final. The key for me was Classical Notes and slides. When I did go to lecture, she was funny. I slept a lot, though.
What college student isn't interested in addictive drugs of society?! Dr. Liets presents her material in a straightforward manner and all exams are MC. She obviously knows what she's talking about and is zealous about the topics she lectures on. She makes sure you understand the material and actually learn. One of the BEST professors for NPB!
I really liked this class and I found myself talking about drugs all the time during the quarter. She is a really good prof and I wish that she would teach 101 b/c her explanations were really clear. She doesn't try to trick you on exams, they are pretty straight forward.
Great professor and great class. Although it was difficult to get a good great because there wasn't a curve, because too many students did well, not because the subject was easy.
Prior to attending class, I was really excited because I heard excellent feedback about this course and Dr. Liets. However, I found the class to be rather mundane. Dr. Liets lacked the sophistication and articulation I have come to expect from an NPB instructor such as Dr. Sillman. She was quite boring and the class was a frustration for me.
Dr. Liets was an excellent professor. She presented the material clearly and was more than willing to answer questions. She did expect you to learn the material well.
Awesome lectures because they were crystal clear. If all professors were as clear and straightforward as her, it would be heaven. She also really seems to care about students and does everything she can to help. 111L was hard but probably one of the most interesting courses at ucd!
Entertaining and nice professor.Uses a tablet to write and for presentations. Uploads the ppts and podcasts. 3 MTs and a optional final.Average of 3 best tests is final grade. If your final is higher then your 3 MTs average, your grade on the final will be your grade in class. All tests are 40 questions so room for error is small, no curve.
Fantastic prof. No one better at Davis.
Dr. Liets is intimidating. This class is ridiculously hard, expect to do surgeries after watching video slides from 70's, 10+ hour labs, class average purposely graded to be around B-, doesn't matter how much effort you put in the class. TAs play favorites, chicken physiology good to learn if you want to work at KFC!
This class is hard and she is intimidating. Study for the final from the beginning. A lot of stuff due- it will definitely consume your life during the quarter. She is a wonderful lecturer though- which makes up for the difficulty. Go to OH. Turn in everything on time. Do not miss lecture- its like missing weeks in other courses. Prepare for labs.
She is an enthusiastic professor. One of the best. Her notes are another story. Her word choice can lead to ambiguous conclusions. One bullet point can mean many things, but she sometimes doesn't articulate the idea clear enough. Her imprecise and ambiguous wording shows on hard test questions.
Really hard, rewarding class. Dr. Liets is intimidating, but nice once you get to know her. She's usually stressed out. Final is tough!!! We don't get our lab reports graded until the very end, so literally, before the final grades come out, 60% of your grade is unknown. She's too chummy with the TA's in front of students - it's kind of awkward.
Worst class I've taken at UC Davis. You can feel very prepared for the test but, do horrible because her choice of words are very ambigous. I do not recommend this professor. She has way too much going on in her life, therefore does a poor job juggling everything....
NPB168: Do NOT listen to the haters. While her lectures were definitely dry at times, if you study what she lectures, you will do well. Admittedly wording was tricky at times, providing frustration at times. NPB111L: Watch out, this class is very difficult. As a lecturer she is excellent. The final is much easier if you record her lectures.
great class. exams were pretty easy and straightforward but some questions can be ambiguous. i did well in this class without even studying much. HOWEVER, i knew some people who would study for days on end and still fail. she doesn't podcast so go to lecture its helpful
She makes this class interesting, but overall the class set-up isn't great. She doesn't podcast, and many times the notes she posts are unclear. Some of her test questions are confusing, but she doesn't let you ask questions during the test. The class requires a lot of studying. I got an A, but it took a lot of time to get everything down.
Very hard class. Her tests are around 30 questions so no room for error. Test questions very very confusing. Remember seeing double negatives on the test and reminded me of SAT critical reading questions .She has questions like a, b, c, two of the above, and all of the above, so you really need to know everything or you get it wrong!
Excellent professor! Go to lecture, take good notes and watch out for the small details that she doesn't include in the lecture notes. Would recommend reading the book if you need help with understanding the material. Yes you do have to memorize everything but overall a great class.
Dr. Liets is enthusiastic and keeps you awake. She can seem unapproachable at first but I found her to be very warm and helpful when I went out of my way to ask her questions. My only complaint is that the course grade is determined by a relatively small number of multiple choice questions, some of which are worded very ambiguously.
Interesting Class. Very hard. Grading unreasonable. Professor and TAs play favorites. You will not know your grade going into the final. If you took 168 from her, be warned if you want to take her lab classes too.
Excellent professor! Start the report early, prepare well for the labs. Make sure to take good notes in lecture and in the instrumentation lab b/c it'll be impt on the final. Most of the TA's are good but try to get Matt.
Liets was pretty interesting, but relied really heavily on powerpoint. Her lectures tended to be presented a little too fast, but she presented the information in a way that was typically easy to understand. Be sure to know everything that Calcium does!
Very interesting class! One of my favorite classes in NPB. Focus on her lectures, listen to podcasts and you will do well.
Awesome in lecture, she keeps you interested and is quit funny at times but also moves incredibly fast. In OH she is incredibly intimidating and hard to approach.
Great and interesting teacher. Clear lectures, conveys info in a easy to understand way, and makes the topic interesting. Take her if you get the chance!
Liets is the bomb. She teaches the Neuro part of this class very well. This quarter she taught the class along with Zito. Liets teaches concept but doesn't cover everything in class so you need to read the book. For Zito's portion, all you have to do is study the slides because she crams everything into lecture (which can be a good thing).
I was extremely disappointed with this class- a class about drugs and the brain!! However, I found myself so very bored and drained when I attended each lecture. There's no podcast so attending was important (her handwritten slides were unreadable). However her tests were pretty easy, with the option to drop the final/midterm.
This class wasn't as interesting as I thought it would be, but still one of my favorite classes at Davis. Take this class with her if you can, she doesn't rush through the material and takes her time to explain everything she want you to know. Do well enough on the first 3 midterms and you can skip the final!
Great teacher
SPEED TALKS, no breaks, not as interesting as I thought. Leits went out of her way to make the 3rd exam extremely difficult dropping a lot of ppl by a full letter grade because "ppl were doing too well"you shouldn't discourage ppl by trying to make things more difficult. If ppl are doing well, that's a good thing. horrible at replying to emails too
Horrible Horrible Professor! Very confusing and all over the place. Tests were extremely hard and difficult to understand what she wanted.
Great teacher. Talks fast and writing is illegible sometimes, but tests are fair and no tricks. What she emphasizes in class is going to be on the test, questions aren't hard, you just have to know a lot of information. Funny teacher, fair tests, take her!
Liets is a great professor. Very well versed in the subject but she does go very fast. Exam questions can be tricky but come directly from her slides. Study those and you should be fine. Overall, she's very helpful.
She's very unpredictable with tests, and lecture isn't enjoyable. The focus of the lectures is unclear, leading to inadequate preparation for the midterms. 2 out of 6 homework assignments are completely unrelated to the tests + lecture, so why do we do them...? We can't keep our tests, which leads me to believe she recycles questions.
GREAT PROFESSOR! EXCELLENT CLASS! She's very entertaining and the tests come directly off the lecture slides.
She's one of the most interesting professors that I've had here at Davis. Plus she's funny. Great Class!
She's a great lecturer and super funny. It's like if Ellen DeGeneres taught drug addiction. I loved the class material. And no text required! However, she's inconsistent with the difficulty of her exams. Also, she's not as awesome outside of class as I hoped she would be.
This class was super entertaining, though at times the material can be dry. Get the classical notes and ask around for past exams, with those two things in had, you will be golden. The average grade for the class overall was an 88% :) no curve though
Dr. Liets is a great lecturer and absolutely hilarious. Take good notes and read the textbook daily and you should be okay.
confusing ppt, she likes to hand writing on the ppt while talking and her hand writing is horrible. just so confusing while acting like its easy and funny
Out of the combo including DeBello, Ishida, and Furlow, I found Liets to be my least favorite in lecturing. However, with that said she isn't a terrible professor. She's there for you in office hours. She just talks incredibly fast (which gave me anxiety) and repeats herself way to much for my liking (which sometimes confused me). Many do like her.
Phenomenal professor! Her lectures allow you to understand the material and the concepts so that when you are studying it does not feel like you are simply memorizing a bunch of facts! She does talk really fast though, sometimes I wish I could pause her during lecture!
She is the worst professor I had ever taken. She doesn't put down anything in her lecture slides, so you have to copy down everything word for word. Which is not helpful for a class like NPB101 with a million new vocab thrown at you. And don't expect to learn much other than memorize a bunch of random esoteric topics that somehow connectstogether
Dr. Liets is rare among science professors since she teaches the morality and ethics behind the science as well as the science. She clearly cares about her students. A little disorganized though, and tests can be surprisingly tough - but don't let that stop you from getting a quality education from her. Go to office hours - very helpful.
Don't expect Addictive Drugs to be an easy class just because you think it's interestingyou have had personal experience with drugs. It is CHALLENGING and you'll have to work hard for a good grade no matter how much you love the class. No curve. Presentation of material's pretty disorganized so watch out for that. Entertaining. Relevant.
She is very straightforward and all of her exam material comes straight from her notes. She tends to talk very fast and a lot so you kind of need to weed out the important information. She gives 3 midterms and a final with the option to drop one. I easily got an A by going over her notes over and over and ended up not needing to take the final.
This class was TOUGH. I got a B- and it tanked my GPA because its 5 units. But it will be difficult regardless of the professor and Liets is great. She is fun and animated and willing to help.
Dr. Liets is just so passionate about the topic on drugs. She is an amazing lecturer and is clear-cut when it comes to what she wants you to knowlearn. Review her notes and write down everything she writes down. Our class had no curve, average was really high. Classical notes for this class also helps. She's the best! TAKE HER
NPB 111L was a super fun, unique experience. Also really awesome to see physiology concepts in a living system and perform surgery on chickens! NPB 111L-exclusive office hours were great, and Dr. Liets was willing to help. Overall, great class & wonderful professor, just take time to REALLY know concepts.
She takes on large classes and doesn't let you ask for clarifications during the exams. Also if you have a question and you send her an email, she would take her sweet time to reply back. Her exams are straight forward contact wise, but she test on semantics. So basically you can know the content, but your grade would be affected if you don't under
This was one of the most interesting classes I have taken at Davis! I really enjoyed the material we discussed. The tests weren't too terribly difficult but some of the questions/answers were worded strangely (and since she doesn't answer questions during tests, it makes it hard to know how to answer the question).
Don't let irritated pre-meds sway your opinion on this class. Liets is a great lecturer and she really wants people in her class to learn and be engaged with the material. People criticize her tests as being too "semantic based" but I know plenty of people that got A's; one question isn't what decides whether you do well or don't. Tests are fair.
Liets is a great professor who was able to teach the most complicated systems into understandable lectures. Her teaching skills forces you to podcast and go over your notes, which is not a bad thing - you can't lazy learn. She's able to tell stories that relate to the lecture to make it applicable. Her test questions forces you to know everything.
Great professor and a not too hard class but it still wasn't an easy A for me. There were 3 midterms and the final was a group infographic project which was really easy to do. no textbook needed & no homework besides the few readings that she posts online for you to write a short response. My grade would've been better if I did better on the exams.
3 midterms (30 questions each) & a final group project, but requires participation in class/canvas. Pay attention and review your notes if you want to do well on tests. She also doesnt allow you to ask questions on tests. Personally, she wasnt too approachable. She tends to rant about certain topics. However, she let us out early most of the time.
The class is interesting but she talks a lot so it gets boring. The homework is easy: a few assignments where you read a short article and respond (grading based on completion). There are three midterms, they're somewhat hard because they are more detailed than her lectures. She isn't straight forward in her instructions like on the final project.
She's passionate about the subject matter which makes lectures more interesting. Tests aren't too difficult if you review the slides and your notes. Would take again.
She knows her stuff, I loved this class. I recommend recording her because everything on the exams is directly talked about in class. An A is very doable, mostly easy and straightforward exams with a few trick questions. Talking with friends about drugs made me REALLY appreciate this class and Liets, take her. I got an A and first exam I got 80%.
Loved this class. She is funny and lectures are clear. Go to class, because the book has a lot of extra stuff that's not on exams, and she doesn't podcast. She posts the slides beforehand and writes on them during class, so print them out beforehand and do the same, plus write down everything she says. Then read the book so you know what to skip.
3 exams (67.5% total) way too hard, ridiculously unexpected questions. 3 Article responses (10%) interesting and easy. Infographic group project (22.5%) very annoying. Lecture was very unrelated to slides which makes one wonder what would be on the exams. The guest speaker was interesting and lectures were decent. Too much work for a 3 unit course.
4 tests overall and lets you drop your lowest score. I would not recommend her, unfortunately, shes the only one that teaches this class. It is nothing how you would expect. The class should be called "Sociology of addicting drugs." She rants about her views. Write every single thing she says down. Tests are awful, tricky and wants you to fail.
If you pay attention in class + write down what she says as well as study the slides, you'll do well. Her test questions are detail-oriented, so make sure you know specifics! But if you have that down, her tests are a piece of cake. She is also an incredible lecturer, and after taking this class, I think it should be mandatory for everyone to take.
Lecture slides have minimal words so you have to listen during lecture and write down everything. Questions are not bad if you study and write down everything she says. She suggested looking to different resources while studying, but shamed me for doing so when I asked if my answer for midterm could be alternatively considered.
Ideally you should attend every lecture and podcast sometimes to ensure you get everything that she says. Printing out the lecture slides before hand helped a lot. That being said, if you wrote down everything she said, you were good to go. Test questions were straightforward and she made the material really easy to understand and grasp.
She's very knowledgeable and cares about the material . The grade in the class is determined by the 3 exams throughout the quarter. VERY interesting class, it's worth taking and getting educated on. Not a walk in the park though, hard to get an A.
She will have you read a few scientific papers over the course of the quarter. Exams are based mostly on lecture content, guest speakers, and the scientific papers. She takes your best 2 of 3 exams, including the finalif you do well on the first two, you don't need to take the final. Class content is interesting and she keeps the science simple.
Loved this class. She keeps it really interesting and has a lot of anecdotes/evidence to support what she teaches. Brought in a former heroin addict to speak to us and that was amazing. Tests aren't too hard if you study. Ended up getting a B in the class because on the second MT she had a bunch of questions on semantics. NOT an easy A.
Agreed, this was not an easy A class. She also doesn't podcast, nor do annotated slides get uploaded. She also didn't do the "best 2 outta 3" exams thing the quarter I took it. I'd still recommend the class though, her lectures are very engaging, the material is very interesting, and she tries to bring up social aspects to drug use. Amazing class.
Cons: no podcasts and annotated notes are not uploaded so basically you have to go to class. Also, 2 midterms (30% each) and a final (40%). Pros: One book (a novel) to read and is amazing, lectures are so interesting, she's down to earth and chill, and is crazy smart! It really is an easy A if you honestly just study a normal amount.
Because the midterms have so few questions (30) the difference between an A and B is going to class and understanding the basis for each slide/scientific study she discusses. It is not enough to read and interpret the slide yourself because she asks questions based on her own ideas, there can be two right answers but a "better" one to choose from.
The material is very interesting and she presents the information in a very non-biased way. Since there is only 30 questions on the midterms, you can't mess up. Not an easy A, you gotta work for it. But would still recommend.
Her lectures were very captivating/interesting and I felt her exam questions were fair
The class is ok. She rambles about why what she's doing is relevant instead of actually teaching the course though, so she was behind on her slides. 3 midterms (pretty detailed, she also expected you to know her pov on things from lecture, some questions were not even covered in class yet) and 1 group project. She's a cool person though.
Dr. Liets is really funny and engaging! Make sure you study the material and attend lectures because she tests on the things she says as well as the info on her slides.
Course grade made up of three exams. Class was co-taught by Dr. Whistler who (while an obvious expert in her field) taught at a ridiculously high level with confusing examples and analogies. Tests were tricky and grade cutoffs were strict (not even within .01% of the next grade was rounded).
They were both knowledgeable and strong in their fields. However, the Dr. W's materials were more difficult and made it even more difficult along the strange analogies. The curve at the end was poorly structured. They presented a curve for the first individual exam and they NEVER included it in the final grade, so we got fooled thinking so.
Unless you are completely an auditory learner, this professor is not for you. Her lecture slides are comprised of like, four pictures taken from the textbook, which she annotates during lecture. If you go back to try to review the slides, it's hard because you have no context in which to review her arrows, etc. She also talks very fast.
Lauren taught about a third of the content in NPB 101 and she was my least favorite prof for this course. Her teaching style doesn't work for me at all. She has barely any slides, and just talks forever. She basically will talk about one slide with a picture from the book for like 20min then speed though 3 slides in 30 seconds.
Dr. Liets taught part of NPB101 and her lectures were the ones I understood the most. She simplifies hard concepts and explains things by making examples which I find really helpful. A really helpful tip is to study what she SAYS or WRITES during lecture, not necessarily what is already written on the slide itself.
Stupid hard grader on short answer sections of exams, but overall a good lecturer. Tests are extremely hard and unpredictable, with no room for error as they are quite short. Unclear about what we do or do not need to know.
Lauren is an amazing professor. I took NPB 110C with her in Spring 2019, and she made the class very interesting. She is very passionate about what she teaches and spends a good deal of time explaining concepts, making the material easier to handle. She annotates a lot on her slides, so good notes are key. Also, DO NOT MISS CLASS.
Overall, I'm satisfied with Dr. Liets. She is a very passionate lecturer and tries to explain as clearly as possible. The only downside is she doesn't provide much visual aids. If you're an auditory learner, you're all set. If not, be sure to attend office hours to fill in any knowledge gaps. Otherwise, her exams are very fair. You got this!!
one of my fav profs! u could tell she's very passionate when she lectures. i took her in conjunction w debello n her exam questions were more straight forward compared to debello who was more analytical. her lectures are very digestible for tough topics but def make sure u review dif systems over n over because ?'s can be specific on the exam
She is definitely one of the clearest lecturers I ever met! She goes through the details very explicitly. It's helpful to take a lot of notes on the slide
She's an amazing lecturer, really thorough and makes connections throughout the material to better help you understand concepts. She comes off as very intelligent, professional and passionate. Definitely would recommend her
Her lectures videos were often way longer than the allotted 50 minutes that lecture should have been. On top of that, we were assigned slides to do after lecture as if she wasn't already taking up more of our time. Thankfully professor Furlow made this class more bearable and he even gave solutions to his assigned slides. Would take Nasiri again.
Great organization in class. Very clear lecturer. NPB 68 was very easy for me, just have to do the work assigned and there are no tricks.
This is my second class with Dr. Liets and I love her! She is very nice and open, and her lectures are very interesting. She is very helpful and engaging. Midterms aren't too bad.
Dr. L is the best professor I had at UC Davis. She is the kindest and most understanding professor. I loved her class and I wish that I could have taken more courses with her. She is truly one of the greatest assets the NPB department has. I wish the university would give her tenure and keep her forever. Absolutely take her courses.
I loved Dr. Liets. Her lectures were so interesting and very straightforward. Exam questions were basically right from the lectures. I definitely recommend taking her at least once while at uc davis.
Dr. Liets part of the class was great. Her tests actually tested you on things that you learned. Whistler, however, has extremely hard tests.
Dr. Liets makes this class very interesting. Her exams were straightforward and aligned with the lecture slides. The final was very difficult but as long as you pay attention to detail during lectures, you have a pretty good chance of doing well on the exams. Homework problems sets and research papers can be difficult to read and understand.
LOVE HER! Very laid back and approachable. Must attend class to fully understand, adds to slides during lectures. Class was super interesting and easy. Final project, 3 midterms that you will pass if you pay attention to the short lectures. Overall highly recommend it.
Dr. Liets is the best professor I've had at UC Davis. You can tell she cares about her students' success and about the subject she is teaching. She's very approachable and makes you feel comfortable during lecture and OH. Highly recommend taking this class purely because of her and her passion!
Lauren Liets teaches the second half of NPB110C. She is an unfair professor. 1. No practice midterm. 2. Her midterm required memorization of exact numbers. 3. Her midterm required you to reproduce a graph that was never shown in lecture. It was optional homework, with no answer key, which she made the most important question on the test.
Laura spoke a lot during lectures and often went over the allotted class time. It's hard to differentiate what we need to know for the exams vs what she is rambling on about. She continuously tried cracking jokes during our 8AM lectures but there were crickets. She also has "on your own" slides in which you have to teach yourself a specific topic.
Dr. Liets is knowledgeable and cares a lot about student success. She made content accessible and tied it to real-life examples and social justice. The class was graded off of 3 midterms and a final infographic partner project. It wasn't hard if you paid attention to lecture.
Liets is a very good lecturer and cares about her class and what she teaches. The exams are unfair and focus on the research papers she assigns. NPB168 is not too hard of a class, but the awful exams made it miserable. She doesn’t allow questions during exams and will show you a graph with no context and expect you to remember it from the paper
Professor Liets is a great lecturer who is very passionate about what she does. Her classes are always interesting, and while she does not take attendance, she adds questions into tests from conversations in class but not on the lecture slides, so go! Tests are pretty hard if you don't have a background in physiology, but amazinggg class.
Dr. Liets is AMAZING! Her class is comprised of 3 midterms and 1 final partner project; midterms are easy if you pay attention in lecture (even easier if you have any AP Psych experience). Always made office hours accessible (def go to them, even if just to sit and chat) and was happy to answer questions over email or after class. MAJOR recommend!
Her problem sets are all entirely paper based, not much practice for any other content or examples of what would be tested on. Make sure to write down the details, since she tests on specifics from lecture, but everything is in the slides and notes she has during classes. Posts lecture audio recordings and is very passionate about addiction.
Good lecturer, very passionate about course material. Don't be intimidated by the extreme pace of the first lecture, the class calms down significantly after the first day. MAKE SURE YOU READ AND UNDERSTAND THE PAPERS, all of the problem sets are 100% paper based and there will be paper-derived questions on the midterm & final.
Dr. Liets was an extremely passionate professor that made learning more fun and intriguing. A word of advice would be to take notes on what she is teaching during lecture, because the tests will draw from material that isn't explicitly written on the lecture slides, but was mentioned in class. Dr. Liets is very kind and open to questions/concerns.
Liets is great at lecturing because she's so passionate about what she's teaching, which is hard to do for 2 hours straight and keep the class engaged. Unfortunately, the exams are highly difficult and it's hard to know what she'll ask on exams. No practice problems or homework pertaining to lecture are provided.
Very dense lectures, but lots of passion and good at answering questions. Exams were difficult and incorporated complicated materials from scientific papers which were required reading. Overall would take again.
Incredible professor. Organized, engaging, passionate, comprehensive, and invested. One of the best lecturers I've had and one of the most interesting classes I've taken. Made me remember why I liked biology. I 100% would recommend taking the class, the structure is perfect 3 midterms (not super hard), and 1 final project (infographic poster).
Amazing and engaging lecturer, but the information was so dense and you never knew what she was going to ask in exams because there is no study guide. She reviews the slides (posted online) and decides what questions to add, so go to lectures for full context! There aren't too many assignments but there's a final project. Had to change to p/np
Professor Liets is not only an amazing professor but an amazing person that truly cares about her students success in her class.Tests can be unpredictable at times especially with no study guide and no recorded lectures, but Liets makes herself available in accordance to her students availability to accommodate for that. Thank for prof liets!!!
