Lauren was great! She was really fun and tried to make the class interesting. She made sure to really get to know everybody in the class.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She has no class participation, does not know how to teach an entry level course. She gets up and talks like you are a graduate student when it is an entry level course. Takes months to grade papers and is overall probably the worst teacher I have had at Utah State
Very difficult class. She rambles on about things that don't relate to the class. The study guide she gives out is not helpful at all. You have to go to class, because she does iClicker questions every single day that are a HUGE part of your grade. FIND A DIFFERENT TEACHER.
Professor Lucas doesn't take into consideration that this is an entry-level Biology course. Tests are tough, my class average right now is a 65, each test is 20% of your grade. I would take this course from another professor if you aren't majoring in science. If you are, I think this class would be very helpful for the future classes you'll take.
She's fairly uptight about most things. She says attendance is required, but you could probably get by without it because she posts her slides from lectures on canvas.
Her tests are brutal don't expect and A or B, chances are you'll get a C or lower every time. At the end of the semester I had a 79.9% in the class and she wouldn't bump it up even though I did assignments and never got credit for them. If I would've answered 1 more question right on a quiz I would've gotten a B- that's how close I was. She's awful
She seems to really love her field, which is great, but I feel like she gets offended when she realizes some of the students do not. If she thinks more than a certain % of the class isn't paying attention or understanding, then she'll make that section of material extremely hard on the exam.
Lauren is not going to let you slide by this class. She, like most professors should, will expect you to know your material. Use her office hours!! I went as much as possible to help clarify any concepts that I was confused on. I finished the class with an A
Her lecture material is not consistent with the tests and quizzes. She just talks about things she is interested in and then come test time you are clueless on the material. Not a well structured class, and very difficult for a basic biology class.
Lectures don't cover what is on quizzes or exams very well, yet participation is heavily weighted so you still have to show up. She seems nice in class but beware, if you have a problem or need a small reasonable accommodation don't expect her to be very helpful or lenient. She'll talk down to you and make it obvious how little she cares about you
The classes are always interesting and include many videos and demonstrations to help make material more understandable and exciting. Quizzes and exams are easy as long as you've done your required reading and know what's in the chapters. Definitely one of my favorite classes.
I did not mind this teacher as a person however it was not a one credit class. I spent more time for this one credit lab than on some tgree credit classes I have. You have homework and quizzes every week, sometimes after reading 10-15 page papers And if you miss any points you are toast because everything is worth three points. It's so hard for 1 c
Worst professor on Utah State's Campus. By far. Do not take any of her classes regardless of what other comments say. Save yourself a from a boring class with a teacher not committed at all to helping her students excel in her course. Again, do not take any classes from her at all, her teaching and lack of support for her students is not worth it.
Avoid at all costs. Attendance is based on iClicker use, and it is worth four times as much as the average quiz grade. Choose a professor that cares more about teaching than how many times a student presses the buttons on an iClicker.
Sometimes I wonder if she knows that this is an entry-level biology class, and that most students in this class haven't taken a biology class since freshmen/sophomore year of high school. She always moves way too fast on her slides, and her office hours are almost impossible to work with. Avoid taking her class if possible, find another teacher!!
Professor Lucas was a wonderful instructor. The way she designed the class and the semester flowed. You didn't read the book in order, but the way she set it up made complete sense. She is very knowledgeable and I enjoyed her lectures. She focused on understanding concepts and upper level thinking instead of memorizing and regurgitating info
This was a hard class. There is a lot of information to go over and sometimes the lectures are hard to follow. If you don't go to class, it is really difficult to pass because the iclicker scores are weighted really heavily. The tests were hard even when you do the reading and attend lectures. Extra credit is available, but it can only help so much
She gives all answers to tests through quizzes and slides that are uploaded after class.
Professor Lucas was amazing. You definitely have to earn your grade, but if you put in the work necessary it is possible to get a good grade. I took advantage of every extra credit opportunity and went to almost every single SI class which seemed to help as well. She is very passionate and has wonderful lectures. She's pretty funny too!
If you have her for BIOLOGY 1010 I would recommend you drop her class. She is very unorganized in lectures and her tests do not correspond with what she is teaching you in class. She grades ridiculously for an entry level biology class, and tends to ramble about her research rather than what you are tested on.
Lauren was a good professor, she did several in class activities to try and make her lectures interesting. Overall, not a hard class, but definitely one to study for tests in.
Her tests are poorly written. (they do not correspond to the notes or lectures) She does not present material clearly for students to understand. If you enjoy someone talking down to you then you should go have a chat with Lauren she's great at it! Glad the class is over and I hope she can learn to treat students as adults.
Lauren Lucas writes the labs, although unless she is your TA also, you'll likely never meet her. However, those labs are poorly written and require you to do too many things in little time. The pre-lab readings are high-level scholarly articles that beginners (everyone in the lab) can't understand and quiz questions are impossible. Unfair grading.
I thought the class was well structured and the amount of work for mid and final projects was fairly light and stress free. theres just a lot of reading to be prepared for the quizzes each week. theres a fair amount of extra credit too. she did a faily good job explaining it.
Lauren is awesome. She sometimes is viewed as unfair, but if you are willing to put in the work and follow the instructions, you will do well in her classes. She is also very willing to help students with their individual situations as long as they show that they have done their best.
Hated this class, her lectures and notes legit dont correspond with her exams and class average was always super low. Dont recommend.
Lauren is a really nice lady but her tests are nothing like what she teaches in class. Your grade is only based off of a few things making it really easy to have your grade drop multiple levels.
She was an OK professor. She put her lectures online, made our textbook free online, and made good use of our class time. The tests were pretty difficult and had a lot of questions and sometimes it felt like we would have questions on our tests that we never learned in class. Other than that, she was very friendly and nice to all of us in the class
Professor Lucas was an okay lecturer but her tests were harder than expected and some things tested on were not covered in class. I contacted her several times throughout the semester and she was VERY slow getting back to me about questions. Doesn't care about student success at all. 0/10 would not recommend.
Lauren seems like a great person, but I dreaded going to lab with her every single week. Her grading system is unfair. She will give you a few questions to answer on your lab write up each week, but she is prone to taking points off for little specificities not mentioned anywhere in her question or in the lab documents. Would NOT recommend.
One word? boring. It was literally so hard to sit in the labs and the things taught seem irrelevant for almost a 3 hour class. It seems a bit excessive just to look at endophytes. The quizzes arent hard you can find them in the lab manual for the most part but if you get one wrong dont expect to be told what the right answer is
Her class had almost no bearing on the biology class it was associated with, and was poorly adapted to being online because of COVID. The information she puts out is ambiguous at best, the lab manuals are greek to anyone who isn't majoring in bio, and they expect you to use a program (R) that they don't explain. TA's can save you. Mine didn't help.
Went to every single lab and did my best. Got above 79.50% and they will not round it. Professor is nice but can be unfair. Also, hard to do labs all online.
Its obvious that Lauren cares a lot about this subject, but this class often feels like being roped into a research paper you don't care about. The class also really depends on your TA. The final paper is worth 40% of your grade, which is totally ridiculous.
I have never hated any class more. Lauren and my TA were very unwilling to work with me and did not transition well to an online course. I'm studying to be a doctor and literally hope that one day one Lauren comes into my clinic so I can reject seeing her.
My TA in this class was awesome, everything about this class was not. Did not transition good to online, pointless classes, and way more work and homework than a 1 credit lab should have. Super harsh grader, no matter how hard you work they will find something to dock you on, and lauren was not available or understanding at all. Also super boring.
This class completely depends on your GTA. Lauren Lucas is kind of hard to reach and you really aren't supposed to reach out to her unless you've gone through your GTA. Her videos and quizzes don't always line up completely. Overall the class isn't hard (especially if you have a good GTA), but Lauren Lucas doesn't really do anything in the class.
You work with a group in this lab, so it is important that you show up to class. You get graded on what you do in class as well as weekly quizzes on what you will be doing in class. We worked on a semester long project. Although we had a TA, Professor Lucas made the videos easy to understand each week. Show up to work and you will pass.
Although this class does teach you how to write a research paper, it's an odd way to do it. The class has very little actual lab work and is mostly just writing, which can be irritating due to the class being only one credit for so much work
This class is easy if you stay on top of everything, especially since it's group work. You never meet Lucas herself, but her videos and Canvas set up are good and thorough if you take the time to do what you should. Tried to make it interesting and applicable to the students. Her GTAs are really good too as far as I can tell.
Why is everyone complaining about her? You never meet her, but her online material is super easy. The class itself is boring and long but it's literally not that bad. You work as a group to compile a giant Lab Report throughout the semester. There are 15 minutes of homework a week, and then time spent in class. NOT HARD or time-consuming whatsoever
The labs were fun and easy and I enjoyed the class. The research paper wasn't difficult as long as you come to class and incorporate feedback given. TA was great and answered any questions. You do group work the whole time which is never my favorite but it wasn't bad.
This class is TA taught which makes it extremely difficult to grade Professor Lucas. Your success in the class is primarily based on which TA you are assigned. Other people that had different TAs in the class that I knew had a lot of different grading material, weren't as strict and lazy as my TA, had different due dates and easier grading.
I'm not sure how her regular classes are, but the labs are very easy and interesting. If you come to class and pay even the slightest amount of attention you will do great in the class. Not sure why people say the grading is unfair. The in-class assignments are really easy and she explains everything on the pre-lab videos. Not a hard class.
The TA taught the class so I don't know what the actual professor is like. Very easy lab if you have a good TA.
Lauren is the least personable teacher. She expects a lot, does not have clear grading criteria, and if you ask to meet her in person regarding concerns or questions she will do anything to avoid it. A good teacher should be willing to meet with students, not tell them she would rather them ask others or email. Does not care about her students.
Taught by a TA, if you get Julia she is really nice and easy to work with. The class could be boring at times but it was really easy.
I felt like this class did not apply to my Biology class. I also felt like things were graded extremely harshly and subjectively, with a form of grading that I wasn't able to learn anything from. I found it frustrating when I would put tons of time into the class, but still had questions because the lab manuals were unclear.
I had a TA named Anthony, he wasn't great I would definitely find another TA if you can.
Lauren Lucas teaches through videos that you are then quizzed on. The videos are not accessible, and often I couldn't hear or CC covered the content. She has GTA's do all the teaching, and mine just told us what to do, and put no effort into actually teaching. I often was confused, and questions were not answered well. Grading was extremely harsh.
I know many who went into this class thinking it was going to be a beginner lab class and not a class where we are expected to be perfect. A lot of the videos and "lectures" were unclear. If you get Anthony as a GTA I recommend you change to a different one.
Shes a really harsh grader
Chinedum was my TA - he was snarky and confusing so avoid him if you can. The way the class is set up - the lab manual always has a ton of irrelevant information. Make sure to print out the lab manual and do the pre-class quiz. Not much homework other than that. It was an easy class besides how confusing and long it is.
Entirely TA taught, never saw her the entire semester. She has you do the manual labor for collecting data on her alfalfa plants that she is doing for her research. Your entire experience is based on a TA you get assigned and don't know how bad it is until the semester starts
Entirely TA taught, never saw her the entire semester. Your entire experience is based on a TA you get assigned and don't know how bad it is until the semester starts. The TA held us to his level of understanding, not at the beginner level class we are. I would recommend finding the labs taught at a satellite campus or by any other professor online
The lab is only taught by a TA. If you get a nice grader for a TA you're in luck if not... You would think that a 1 credit class would be easier than the BIO Lecture but it's not. Every assignment is heavily weighted. If you miss one point on an in-class assignment your grade drops by 1%. If you want to maintain an A in the class, good luck.
I had a good TA, but my goodness that class is the slowest thing on earth, the TA can't control it, & she has to do it like Lucas wants, but Lauren treats us like 12 yr olds. Her videos are so cringey & so quiet, my computer is at full volume & I can barely hear it. Her instructions & rubic are dumb, sometimes our TA is confused or wonders why.
Class format is terrible. Don't take BIO Lab from her, just take BIO Lab at an extension. TA has no clue what he's doing, and is extremely unhelpful. Went from a 97% to 88% after the group lab report, even though we received 100% on the individual sections. TA never gave any helpful feed back either. She shouldn't be allowed to teach this anymore
All Lauren does is make cringe videos that are super boring and "mandatory" to watch. She doesn't care much about her students and only teaches the class to advance her own research. She teaches us like we're in elementary school, which is frustrating. My TA was great though. My TA gets a B+ but Lauren gets a big fat F.
Dolores Umbridge, I kid you not. Dr. Lucas leaves all authority to her TAs. We had a disagreement with how something was graded with our TA and contacted her about it. She became extremely defensive and justified the TA without looking into the problem. She seems to get very upset and then switches to being sweet all of a sudden. Kind of creepy.
For the 1615 lab you are only in the class a handful of times. The class is once a week, and even then the first and last few weeks you don't go to class. As other reviews have said, it all really depends on who your TA is. Its really easy to get an A if you show up and do your work!
This course is awful. The class is just a reason for students to collect data for Lauren's research under the guise of learning how to write a research paper. There are only a few moments that are remotely interesting (5-30 minutes max out of a 3 hour class) and they're few and far between. If you get Anthony as your TA, switch classes. Trust me.
Worst lab I have taken. Graded on very few things, and graded very harshly as well. The final project is a group lab report which is worth 30% of grade, and the highest score out of the entire class was a 75%, which meant it was impossible to get an A even if everything else was perfect. Poor instruction, poor feedback.
She doesn't care much about the students. Your class totally depends on which TA you get. I had a good TA, but he was strict in grading something that was worth 30% of the grade. Basically just cross your fingers that you get a chill TA because Lauren doesn't care at all. You are kind of thrown in the dark for the assignment worth 30% of your grade
What a joke. You need an ok TA or you have 0% chance of an A. I was fighting through the semester with just barely an A, then came the group lab report, my group got a 21/28 we were the high of the class due to the harsh grading of the TA. I emailed Lucas to see if she'd read it, since in the syllabus it says we can contest our score & she refused.
Lauren Lucas could give two about any student at USU. She only is there to do her own research, and delegates all teaching responsibility to her TA's. My TA was amazing and a god send, but if you get a bad TA good luck at succeeding in that class. Good luck contacting Lauren, and if you do she won't be of any help.
The honors lab section gets Lauren instead of a TA, and she was kind and fun to talk to. The rubrics and expectations each week were clear and she gave an incredible amount of feedback leading up to the final group report, so an A is achievable with time spent. I can't speak for other lab sections that don't get Lauren, but my group had no issues.
Good luck if Faraz is your TA. He is nice, but he has no clue what he is doing. His grading is totally random and deducts points for things that don't make any sense or aren't in the assignment. My group was barely able to secure an A-.
Lauren delegates all teaching to the TAs so cross your fingers you get a good TA. You can miss one class and you can't be late or you'll get a 0. The group project tanked everyones grade in my entire class. They are graded very harshly and on a GRADUATE level rubric. You work on it for weeks in class and even out of class. Worst 1 credit class.
DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT LOOK AT THE 5s & 4s or 3s they are not accurate look at the 2s & 1s. She gives all power to her TAs, & when your TA sucks she will not help you, she tries anyway possible to get out of meeting in person & her rubric for a crappy reports worth 30% of your grade is graduate level, she won't look over reports graded by a bad TA
Bio 1615 was brutally slow and boring. Worst class I've taken at a university level. My TA was great but the group lab report was graded way to harsh.
In the nicest way, this is the worst class I have ever had & I am in my senior year. She has a terrible grading scheme that is used, & some TAs grade harshly, while others give you an easy A. If you have a harsh TA good luck you will not get an A. If you want to take an English class then this is for you, but like me, you need the class to graduate
You end up in a group with some of the laziest people ever, and your grade will suffer. You'll never actually speak to Lauren Lucas, and it is impossible to get 100%. This is my second semester with this professor and the 1st semester i barely got an A-, this semester i have an A because i have to babysit my other group members.
1625 is way easier to get a good grade in than 1615. Really it all depends on who your TA is and if your assigned group is tolerable.
I've taken both 1615 and 1625 from her. My main grievance is 1. An assignment worth 30 percent of your grade is only worth 28 points. If you drop a point on the assignment, your overall grade will also drop more than a whole percentage point; that's poor class design. Grading varies by TA who are not held responsible. It is very group-dependent.
I'm a 4.0 senior pre-med (OChem, Biochem, etc.), and this was the most confusing, pointless class I've taken. Never saw the professor, just the TA. Material felt like jargon for the sake of confusion. Unapplied, boring, and unnecessarily hard. I'd rather retake OChem than do this again. Sadly, it's the only option, so good luck.
A very pointless class; there is nothing that I learned that will benefit me in any other class or future career. This class is extremely subjective and your grade will solely depend on your GTA and the group that you are randomly placed in. 25% of your grade will be based on a single presentation. Good luck.
Odds are, if you take this class you won't ever meet Professor Lucas. Your grade will be entirely dependent on your GTA.
i mean shes not great but let me have an extension when i was sick so idk
The worst class I've ever taken. Made me question my life choices
Put no effort into my success. Never saw her once and the projects were pointless.
One of the hardest 1-credit courses I've ever taken. Did not give me an extension for the final project when I had surgery. Virtually everything depends on your TA, just pray you get lucky. I'm sure she's a great lady outside of this lab.
There is no effort put into teaching. The TAs are great but the material they have to teach is pointless. There are hardly any assignments so doing bad on one assignment can mess up the whole semester. She is the only one that teaches it so you have to take it through her.
Seems to not really care about the course or what the students get for their grades. Just doesn't seem like she's trying at all with this class. Also this lab has nothing to really do with the lecture.
I felt like the seed beetles we studied were of more value to Lauren then me and my success. What a waste of time to just earn 1 credit under someone that didn't support me.
It depends on what GTA you get. Mine was okay, but she didn't really know what she was doing. You will do an in class experiment which is easy if you just follow directions, and an individual presentation that is the same. I will say 1625 is WAY better than 1615 and I was graded way easier and it was just easier overall.
Your success in the class depends on the GTA you get, but they are all typically harsh graders.
The professor seems disinterested in teaching. The TA's are great but the material they're provided isn't great. As well as this professor is very uncaring about her students as a whole, Very strict on attendance and excuses. Unfortunately you do have to take the course through her so just good luck!
Lauren has little to do with the grading itself, as much of this will be done by your assigned TA. However, she selects them well.
Your experience in this class depends heavily on your TA. Lauren isn't involved at all—you'll only see her in intro videos. My TA was fantastic and the reason I did well. Attendance rules are absurd: More than 5 min late? You're kicked out with difficult makeup. BIOL 1615 was painfully dull, and even TAs seemed frustrated with Lauren's structure.
The final is graded using a graduate-level rubric, which feels wildly inappropriate for a one credit undergrad course. Your grade depends entirely on your randomly assigned group and TA. Mine openly admitted that Dr. Lucas is using this course to further her own research, not to teach. There's no real academic benefit to taking it.
Hated this lab. The whole thing is based on doing work for Lauren's research. All it focuses on is Alfalfa which no one cares about. My TA was amazing and probably the only reason I got an A. If you get a bad one, you're screwed. Lauren expects you to know how to write prolific post-lab write-ups which is crazy for a one credit class as a freshman
Very group project heavy (luckily I had a great group, otherwise would've been terrible) and alarmingly tech/computer heavy with lots of writing. Had to go to an English tutoring session to help with a biology research project? Most of the time I dreaded going to the lab
This was more of an English class than a biology class. She does research on alfalfa plants and basically just uses her students to do the research for her. We did so many reading assignments when this was a biology lab. I love biology but the labs were boring and the course was boring. She never introduces herself once and refuses to help.
The only reason Dr. Lucas is still a professor for this class is because she doesn't want to do the boring data collection she makes the students do. Everything is graded so harshly, the classes are long, and you will never see Lucas, only a TA. Don't take this class if you don't have to. IF this class is required, get baptized and start praying.
If you aren't required to take this class, DO NOT TAKE IT. Workload was manageable but incredibly niche (I hope you like alfalfa!!) and graded on a graduate level rubric. My best advice is pray for a good TA and don't take the honors section. Lauren teaches it herself. I had a friend in it, they had harsher grading and an overall worse experience.
I was in the honors section, which means I actually had Lauren. This class did not feel like a lab, it felt like a writing course in a lab setting. I can't remember how often we even did lab work, most of the time we were writing. It's also ALL assigned group work, so if you get a sucky one you're just screwed. She also doesn't go easy on grading.
I was in the honors section, which means I actually had Lauren. In this lab you actually get to do lab work, hooray! The only writing you do is for your final video where you have to talk about the experiment you ran. Honestly it's not as bad as the first section but it still feels overwhelming. She also doesn't go easy on grading.
