She expects you to know everything, and when you ask for help she makes you feel stupid. She is more concerned about publishing her book than teaching this class. Do NOT take her!

This professor is well organized, offers a complete representation of people not usually represented in a history course and keeps the class discussions and lectures interesting. She's also nice, helpful and smart, even if sometimes in class she seems grumpy, abrupt and spacey. Ridiculous amount of reading involved, but worth the work.

AWFUL only talks about her self
Mandatory attendance for lecture and discussion. Must read before discussion to get an A. Must study review sheet before tests--no winging it. Lectures are sometimes boring..but it is history. In general an alright class, not particularly fun but not dreadful either.
Sklaroff is definitely the best History professor you could get. Her lectures are unfortunately mandatory but they are usually pretty interesting; she clearly loves the subject matter and tries to make it as interesting as possible. I will probably make a B in the course and that's with only about of 30 min.'s of studying for this class a week!
I would recommend taking her she gives you the test the day before you have about 5 identifications and an essay each test..not hard there are 2 tests during the semester and a 5 page paper
I felt like I was taking a high school course, there is a seating chart, and is, overall, a very juvenile course. She requires you to read A LOT of material, but I did not read any of the required readings and still made a B+. She emphasizes overall themes instead of history, but tests you on very minor topics and details. Not recommended.
This was a great class I really enjoyed the class. Its a easy class to get a good grade in if you go to class which is a must. She really knows her info and seems to really enjoy teaching it. I am looking foward to taking another one of her classes.
Overall a very good class. Lectures were interesting with lots of images, music, and other visuals. Lots of reading but most of it was OK. I didn't want to take the class but it was mandatory...I'm glad to have had this professor becasue she made it about as interesting as you could hope for.
I put a good bit of effort forward. I read most of the readings and participated in discussion and took notes in lecture. I did this for the majority of the class and got Bs. When I slacked off near the end, I still got Bs. No matter how hard you try, you'll get a B in her class. I talked to her about it & she didn't listen or help.
This was one of the most boring classes I have taken. I thought history would be interesting but she makes it boring. There is an abundance of reading and a 5 page paper but she does give you you the test the night before. Even if you know the material she will still give you a B. She will not help you either. Bad professor!
I am the laziest student at USC and i found this class easy. I got a B but if i tried even a little i would have easily gotten an A! i am even taking her again in spring.
Overall a very good professor!! She is EXTREMELY excited about history- more than any normal person should be, but in a good way. She teaches not only for you to memorize the info but to understand & internalize the concepts. The course load was a bit heavy but as long as you do the work youre good. Your success also depends heavily on your TA.
Hist of Popular Culture--I found this class very interesting and Dr. Sklaroff is extremely knowledgeable in this area. Lectures go by quickly so good note taking skills are a must. LOTS of reading, at least 100 pgs/week but on good articles. Don't take it if you're lazy and don't want to work, but if you're interested I highly recommend it!
Dr. Sklaroff was really nice and obviously very knowledgable of American Popular Culture. There is a lot of reading but it is interesting. The midterm and final are identification and essay so it takes a lot of preparation but if you do the readings through the semester you should be fine. Overall, great class, great professor!
Like everyone has said before, it's a "B" class. I studied really hard for one exam and read all the material and got a B. Next test I barely studied and skimmed the reading...got a B. Go to TAs for help, she doesn't provide much assistance.
Very knowledgeable. She lectures really quickly and on non-discussion days, I took upwards of 6 pages of notes in one class. Lots of reading, but only 2 papers and 2 exams, which are pretty straightforward if you keep up with the readings/participate in discussions. Great about answering questions + really nice!
Her class is designed for success. Her assignments help build on each other so that the 12 page paper is not so difficult (if you did the assignments right). The only thing I did not like was that she was ver self centered and not helpful at all. She will make you feel stupid. I left her class many times feeling as if she had not helped at all and
Her lectures were well done. However the papers in the class are worth more than the exam and she doesn't give clear directions on how to successfully complete them. She grades extremely hard and she will not work with you on your grades. DO NOT take this class. I am a History major and Honors student and I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
I did the work, participated in class, and asked the professor lots of questions about the papers and exams beforehand. She is willing to read drafts and anything else related to the papers. It's an easy A if you put in the time and effort.
Don't under any circumstances take Dr. Sklaroff for Hist 300. She is so full of herself and unhelpful. I've never worked so hard for a B in my life. Save yourself the troubles and get somebody else for Hist 300. If you like professors that talk only about themselves and her experiences in being a genius, then she is for you.
Like other posters have noted, Dr. Sklaroff can be a little self-centered at times, certainly enough for me to notice. The class wasnt too bad as far the overall objectives though. I learned a great deal about writing a research paper, and was able to make a B. It was not easy. It would be cool if she was a little "nicer" when students are confused
Very knowledgeable and helpful. Her lectures are well organized and the work load she assigns is reasonable. She does cover a lot of material fairly quickly. She also uses other forms of media for reference. She is a fair grader and is overall a very good professor. She is also easy on the eyes which enhances the class.
If you fail her class it is your fault. She works hard to ensure you pass.
Her lectures are very detailed and organized. YOU HAVE TO TAKE NOTES AND BE AT EVERY CLASS AND DO THE READING! She will make sure that you do the reading with pop quizzes. Great class though- so fascinating and she uses a lot of video/music clips. Our class did study groups for the tests- which is how I passed. She will help you though if you ask
Sklaroff is really nice and loves History. Go to class, pay attention to the lectures, participate in discussion, and read the documents and you'll be fine (just try not to sneeze in class).
sklaroff is the best history teacher i have EVER had. she talks really fast, but she makes sure you get the main points. do the document reading, it helps tremendously. she is extremely understanding and helpful. if you have to take history and you're not excited about it TAKE SKLAROFF. she is the bomb
Dr. Sklaroff is really excited about history. There could be worse. The tests are 4 I.Ds and an essay. It's not hard if you read the documents and take notes. But you only have 50 minutes so the time limit is what makes it so hard. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should definitely go because there's no way to pass the test if you don't.
Sklaroff is a great professor and she really loves history. She taught American History topically, not chronologically, which was actually really interesting. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you really should go to lecture and TAKE GOOD NOTES. Her tests are I.D.'s and essays. Going to and participating in section is the reason I got an A.
I LOVED Dr. Sklaroff's class. You can tell she's really interested in American history and she loves what she does. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I can't imagine passing this class if I hadn't gone to every class. Take good notes and DO THE READING. The final grade is based heavily on two papers that take time and aren't the easiest to write.
I'm not a history person at all and was dreading this class & now it's my favorite. Sometimes she goes a little crazy with her lectures, jamming in a lot of detail, but if you pay attention and take notes you'll be fine. She teaches like she's telling a story and uses movie clips. Discussion sections are easy points. 2 tests, a paper & a final.
Dr. Sklaroff is a great professor she loves what she teaches. HOWEVER, the grading system is really unfair. She doesn't grade essays (exams), her TA's do and there are several different ones therefore not everyone is getting graded the same way.
Dr Sklaroff really knows her stuff and genuinely is excited about what she teaches. She makes a boring subject very interesting. The tests are all essay and short answer. Only complaint I have is that her TAs grade everything and some TAs grade harder than others which I don't think is fair. If you can get Robert he is the easiest!
Dr. Sklaroff, was a great professor. her lectures where very helpful but not mandatory. The only reason you would need the book is if you did not go to class and needed to catch up. Make sure to go to the discussion, this is where a big portion of your grade is decided. Also, knowing how your TA grades is key as well.
Pretty good teacher. Class is pretty boring. I went to lecture occasionally but always went to discussion classes, and did well on all the tests. Don't bother buying the real textbook, just get the discussion book.
if you like self-absorbed, condescending know it alls then this professor is perfect for you. avoid like the plague.
Lauren doesn't put anything on her slides except pictures and video clips. She straight lectures the entire class but she makes it so entertaining for all of us that hate history. Her goal is to take students that hate history and help them fall in love with it. You don't need the big text book but definitely get the doc reader.
Dr. Sklaroff is really upbeat and happy to pass her knowledge onto her students. Her lectures are pretty important but if you miss a couple you can still get the overall idea on the messages. The TAs grade and some are relatively gentle like mine while others are much more strict. Overall the class is pretty good and pretty easy.
Dr. Sklaroff is very knowledgeable about history, however she talks very fast and her ppts suck. I get the fact that she doesn't include words on ppts (so you listen to lecture), but she talks too fast which defeats the purpose. Focuses on themes rather than dates. Discussions were annoying. Biggest pet peeve: TAs graded everything, not prof.
Was a good class! The lectures are really interesting and straight forward, with pictures and videos. However, she talks the whole time and doesn't put anything on blackboard, take good notes! The tests follow directly from the exams! Exams are IDs and an essay, and that format is the same for the final too. Made a mandatory class interesting!
This was actually the best history course I've ever taken. Dr. Sklaroff focuses on the experiences of average people during the time instead of dates & names. It makes the content relatable & easy to remember. Just get the sources textbook you don't need the main one. If you read & go to class/discussion you won't need to study much for exams.
She is an amazing teacher guys , really. She is upbeat and actually makes history pretty interesting. She gives the ID's for what will on half of the exam, but the other half is an essay question. you don't need the textbook, but you the need the book with the readings in it. Just pay and attention and take notes & you wont have to study much.
Dr. Sklaroff really wants you to understand the subject. Her lectures are interesting, but they are not mandatory. There is a discussion section with a TA where you have to read about 20 pages a week and you are graded on participation. She has 3 exams and one 6-8 page essay. You do not need the textbook, but you do need the document reader.
She is very nice, but her lectures are not interesting. Lectures are not mandatory, but discussion sections are. You have pages to read each week. Exams are easy. Study guides are exactly like exam and you can pass with only looking at that. She makes it very easy to make a good grade. Textbook is not needed, but document book is.
This is maybe the easiest class you will take in college. She says on the first day the lowest you can receive is a C. The TA session is the only thing you need to go to, for that participation is like 35% of your grade. I showed up syllabus day and then only went to tests after. So easy.
Very engaging during lectures, she comes up with all her own material, so the only book you buy is the one for the discussion class, which you are graded on participation. 3 tests including the final and one paper. Everything is writing. Not difficult if you show up and take notes. Not an easy A however. Bonus: She gives lots of extra credit.
Sklaroff gives really interesting lectures that gives a good insight to the truth about America. All the assignments are graded by the TA so make sure to participate at discussion sections because if they see you trying, they are more likely to grade your exams nicer. Highly recommend to take to get history credit done with. Lots of extra credit!
Sklaroff seems like a kind lady who is passionate about history but she would often go on rants during lectures. All grading is done by your TA who you have class with once a week so the best way to do well is to get to know your TA and participate in the class discussions.
Pretty nice lady, a bit of an oddball, but overall a pretty good and easy professor. Lectures were nothing but her rambling and showing pictures, I didn't learn anything from her lectures so I stopped going. Do the readings, show up to discussion and say 1 or 2 things, and you'll be fine. Exams are straight from the study guides.
She makes you feel stupid when you ask questions or discuss things. She also is very condescending and a bit of a know it all. Dont expect much. Im a history major and she is one of the professors I wont take again. Save yourself the time.
History major here - Boring classes, terrible teacher. STAY AWAY
Im a history major and liked her class, the lectures are usually interesting and she grades pretty easily. Lots of readings (40+ pages/week) but its discussed in class. You have to attend lectures to pass bc her powerpoints are mostly pictures and the tests are all essays from the lectures.
This online class is interesting and a great way to take the History requirement. There are a few tests but the lectures are easy to get through and it relates to current day. You can finish the class on your own time and the professor responds to email quickly. If you pay attention to the lectures and other stuff you will do really well.
Such a caring individual and awesome professor. Super prompt to emails. Makes the material genuinely enjoyable. Really great way to get your history credit out of the way. Would recommend to a friend
Man, she is so bad. Shes a fast talker, so you can barely keep up with her notes, especially because she doesnt use PowerPoints. If you are gonna take this class, please please please make a group chat.
She is not good at her job. Incredibly condescending, she says something rude at least once per lecture. Youd be better off eating glue. At least thats worthwhile.
Professor Sklaroff is a great professor. I wouldn't listen much to these 1.0 ratings, they are just pissed they waited last minute to complete all of their work. She offers plenty of extra credit and even offers extensions on things if you ask. Truly great professor!
It is beyond easy to get a B in this class. There are ten extra credit points you can add to the lowest grade. She responds to email within the hour. Even students who dont like her personality will still probably get a good grade-it is such an easy class.
I think Sklaroff means well and cares about history, but I would NEVER take this class again. It's just too much work for a Carolina Core 100 level class and was more work than my 400 level classes. It's difficult to get an A in which sucks for people who are not history majors. TA's grade and some grade harder than others and the paper sucks!
The lecture can be pretty boring if you don't enjoy history but tests are not too hard. 2 exams, 1 paper and a final. Have to attend discussion because a participation score affects your grade. Weekly readings for discussion. Essay on every test but usually easy to write for. TONS of extra credit options. TAs are super helpful.
Professor Sklaroff is an okay history teacher. Her class wasn't hard at all. The only assignment I found difficult was the 6 page research paper we had to do. Other than that the exams aren't difficult and discussion is easy. You just have to read a lot for discussion. Take her if you need an easy history course. There is easy extra credit too.
I got an A in this class and so did most of my friends who took it. It is impossible to fail if you show up and do all the work--Dr. Sklaroff says that. There is so much extra credit and while the paper was annoying, I enjoyed watching the film. There are no dates to remember and the focus is on things that relate to today. I learned a lot.
Do not take this class it will only stress you out.
Her class wasn't too bad. Lectures are very boring and she talks a bit too fast for me but I can manage. Tests are easy as long as you do the reading. There's also a research paper that's kind of annoying but other than that it's okay. TA's are your saving grace in this class.
doesn't use blackboard for grades so you're clueless of your grade all semester. Speaks so fast and blames us for being behind in the syllabus. Sometimes can make you feel dumb when asking questions. extra credit is a ridiculous amount of work. if you skip you wont pass. 10 page paper for a 100 level class. ridiculous
Lectures are intriguing but the class itself is a mess. There are 3 TAs and they are always on a different page and they all grade differently from eachother. She also doesn't use blackboard to update grades. We have to take the time out of our day to email our TA and ask what our grades are and I don't think that is fair.
Semester is over in 1 week and I have no grades entered. No idea what my grade is but im sure not good. Exams are hard, hard to learn in lecture as she talks fast and there are no words on the slides and you have to write a 10 page paper. Says its an easy A but its not! im a nursing major and I would say this class is harder then pathology!
WORST CLASS! 3 TA's all on different pages, 10 page paper + 50 question and 5 paragraph essay final. I had to take this class (im a nursing major) and it was hard for no reason. Ridiculous that im more worried about this class than any of my nursing classes this semester. Also, semesters over in a week and still have no idea what my grade is!
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS... im trying to save you please listen!
BEWARE STAY AWAY! am going to get all A's but this class ruined it for me. Says its an easy A well let me tell you thats a lie!
worst class of my entire life. Its a 100 level class and she makes it like we all are historians. I would rather get a migraine every single day than every have to retake this class.
Would highly recommend to never take this course. WAY too hard for a 100 level class. Tests are all memorization of the readings. Extremely time consuming and stressful for what should be a basic class. Professor Sklaroff refuses to enter grades into blackboard, so you only know your final grade once submitted to the university.
Shes super smart and makes the lectures fairly interesting but the set up of the class is so disorganized. She doesnt have any way for you to learn material if you miss class. The class is much harder than a 100 level class should be. You only do well if your TA is good. Just all around a mess but the class isnt terrible.
Please save yourself time and take a different level 100 course for history. Ridiculous how tough Dr. Sklaroff grades. She will tell you it is fair, simply is not. Much harder than 300 level classes I am currently taking in the HIST department.
just. dont. do it. seriously. this was supposed to be an "easy a" but it is far from it. she doesn't have ANY grades in blackboard and its the day of the final. 3 TAs that are never on the same page. 50 questions and a 5 paragraph essay for a 100 LEVEL CLASS. she herself is nice but the class and her teaching are not worth it AT ALL.....
She is horrible. Does not communicate well with students and did not put a single grade into blackboard all year. Every TA she has is on a different page and you might as well take the class asynchronous and figure it out for yourself. Do not take.
Holy moly was this class a mess. There are no clear powerpoints, the TAs are never on the same page, and it's the day of the final and there aren't any grades on blackboard. For a 100-level class, it is way more difficult than it should be. You end up just having to rely on teaching yourself. Do yourself a favor and pick a different history class.
Lowest grade I've gotten all of college and I'm a nursing major. Is very unclear what exams will cover and there is absolutely no organization within the course. Also, grades weren't put into blackboard, so you had no clue where you stood in the class. For a Carolina Core class, it was way too hard and ruined my 4.0.
This class offers more extra credit than any other 100 level course. No idea why people think they don't know what their grades are--papers are returned with grades on them! The TAs were a mess but almost everyone got an A on their paper and probably on the final because of extra credit. Sklaroff responds to email in minutes.
A very easy class! I never showed up to the lectures, but went to the discussion classes (that's most of your grade). The lectures were unorganized and confusing. Just be friendly with the TAs and you'll do fine. Only 3 exams and one of them was the final, and a 6 page paper. Lost of extra credit!
Really easy class unless you miss lectures. the textbook is a documents book ($20ish), weekly readings take 15 minutes tops. best way is to record lectures (with permission) and listen to them. tons of extra credit. only thing is it wasn't clear what/how to study because the study guides were very vague. still an easy A. Olivia is an great TA
The TA's are what helped me get the grade I got in this class. She is very nice and a good teacher but her lectures are all over the place. For an entry level class she did not provide outlines for notes and only put themes of the lecture on the screen and never posted notes on blackboard. It just seemed a lot for an entry level class
Great class! Lectures are great, people just get upset that they have to actually listen to her instead of stare at slides. Graded by 3 tests, a paper, and discussion section participation. Lots of extra credit. She's funny and real, makes the class better than any high school history course you might have hated in the past.
very mid. 2 test, a final, and a big paper. we also have to go to weekly discussion meetings that the TAs lead. Shes also kinda disorganized but not terrible.
Lectures are important to attend. Good news is that tests are straightforward and easy. Alots of extra credit for the final exam (total of 13pts for my class). Be buddy buddy with your TAs. They will carry your grade aside from tests. Definitely understands and has said that she knows most ppl in the class are just taking it for the credit.
A challenging class for HIST112. Her final is difficult and tedious, especially for a 100-level course. Lecture attendance is not mandatory, but discussion class is as it goes into your final grade.
Dr. Sklaroff is a sweet woman but wow are her lectures LOADED with content. She talks very fast and barely puts any words on her PowerPoints. You are required to take notes as she speaks and its very hard to listen and take notes at the same time. Her tests are very hard and she expects you to know everything. Don't take unless you LOVE history.
Her powerpoints do not help at all and you have to listen and write down what she says. She is a fast talker so I'd suggest to voice record. The final is ridiculous. Two exams, a paper, participation and the final is what determines your grade. I'm not a history person so I struggled in her class. Be friends with your TA, they'll help you.
Dr. Sklaroff was an ok professor, personally I relied more on the TA's than her. She lectures pretty quickly and the PowerPoints are not helpful. The exams had a lot of the readings on them. The final is ridiculous being 2 essays and a multiple choice section. However, she does offer 13 points of extra credit. Some TA's grade leniently.
the tests were brutal as well as the discussion classes. would not recommend unless you are absolutely obsessed with history
Dr.Sklaroff was an amazing professor. There was a lot of extra credit opportunities but the tests are super easy if you show up to lecture. Her slides don't have writing on them so you won't get the information if you don't go. 10/10 would take her class again. Very animated teaching so you don't get bored.
I was getting very frustrated by her and thought I was going to get a C. However the paper and the final brought my grade up. Final exam was a lot easier than she and the TAs hyped it up to be which was nice ig.
No lecture slides to follow along with, write what you hear. Exams aren't too difficult. TA grading, final, and attendance can save your grade.
Dr. Sklaroff was rude and passive aggressive whenever any student asked for help. The TA's all had different rules. Some were very helpful for their students, others, like mine, was a tough grader and not helpful at all. Never take this class, was an embarrassment to this university. This is a 100 level class that I spent 40 hours on to get an A.
You meet once a week as a small class with TA, this is mandatory and participation counts towards your grade but this is very beneficial. A textbook is needed for this class. Do all the extra credit!!!!! Final was easier than expected.
Not very accessible outside of class, and not the kindest in her emails. Overall, not the worst professor.
dr. sklaroff was super nice and understood that people had to take this class for a gen ed. lectures were just her speaking but if you pay attention you'll do ok. i didn't even go half the time but got A's on all my exams since they were all essay format so there's no exact right answer (she made them this way on purpose). wants students to succeed
A fun class with an amazing professor.
Dr. Sklaroff is definitely not the worst professor I've had but she isn't my favorite. The class is relatively easy so long as you do the readings and take notes but she only talks and doesn't have any concrete lecture notes so pay attention. Discussion sections were better and the tests are mainly essays. Overall not terrible.
She is a really good teacher and makes the lectures interesting and personable. You have to get the document book because you use them for tests. The only bad thing about the class is your only grades are the exams, which are mainly short handwritten essays, and the one paper. She's honestly a super cool professor compared to others.
HIST 112 is a very lecture and information-heavy course, if you miss a lecture, you MUST get the information from another student if you want to do well. I had over 100 pages of notes from this semester, and ALL of it will be found on the test. Tests are all writing with one essay and some short answers. Very sweet woman who cares about history
Class is super low-commitment. Your grade it composed entirely of 2 papers and 3 exams however, they are not hard. Going to class is important as she does post her slides online, but they are mostly just pictures and she explains all the notes you need in class. She is a more than fair grader as well!
I absolutely loved Professor Skalroff! Her lectures were amazing and she has such a fun personality. She genuinely wants all of her students to do well and she gives lots of extra credit options. There are 3 exams including the final and one paper but it was all super easy and self-explanatory. Seriously the best and I highly recommend her!!!
Not a bad class, she understands this class is taken for carolina core. I will say, you need to take notes on what she says because the PowerPoints are just pictures and beware she does tend to talk fast. I recommend this class as it is super easy as long as you pay attention.
The lectures were very fast-paced. Get ready to take notes, her powerpoint slides have no information on them so you have to just write what she says. There were 4-5 grades in the class, a large portion from discussion section participation. She knows almost everyone is taking it for Carolina Core, and attendance for lecture is optional. Exams easy
Professor Sklaroff's lectures were FILLED with information and there were no words written on the power points so prepare to go to lecture and take notes if you want an A. If you do pay attention during class you wont need to study much. She is very understanding that this is a core class that everyone has to take even if they don't want to.
She is a great teacher; however, lectures move fast, and her slides are vague so going to class is very beneficial. Attendance isn't required for lectures but is required for the TA sessions. The finals are handwritten essays in class. The only grades in the gradebook are attendance, a final paper, and the exams.
Dr. Sklaroff's class is a mixed bag. Lectures can be hit-or-miss, but the essays and extra credit opportunities make up for it. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for prepping for the exams. Worth taking if you're willing to put in the work.
She effectively taught and was inclusive
I enjoyed Professor Sklaroff's class and thought she was a good teacher. Everything she says in lecture could be on the test so make sure you go. The tests aren't multiple choice, they are essay tests but if you know the information on the tests they aren't hard and the TA's grade them.
Great professor
Absolutely fantastic course! Course consisted of three papers, and a final paper and presentation. Final project was actually really fun to do. Papers are graded by a TA, who gives good feedback. Graded a bit harsher than I would like but this is a high level history course. Class requires a lot of participation and preparation. Highly recommend!
