Carlin is probably one of the best professors i ever had...i had him for two classes, 109 and 305 in the same semester. Very helpful and very cheerful..makes classes go quickly because he is excited to be there and knows hot to teach it

Professor Carlin is extremely energetic and really seems to be passionate about philoshpy. This makes lectures entertaining and worthwhile. I really feel like I got a lot out of his class and would recommend him to others.

i just love his lectures. he is not only passionate and energetic regarding the material, but he also is extremely entertaining to observe. he reminds me of my favorite cartoon character, i.e. millhouse.

Must want to debate and speak your mind. A quite kid will have problems with this type of class. Thinking abstract is a plus.

Excellent teacher, his "pompous" attitude is all a part of his teaching style. Playing devil's advocate really helps provoke thought and interesting conversations during class time.

What can I say? Carlin is the man. He's entusiastic, friendly and insanely smart. Just don't expect to sleep through his classes and get a decent grade. Try hard, and he'll give you a good grade.

Wow, Dr. Carlin is the best prof. I've ever had! He lets you do as many revisions on your papers as you want as long as you turn them in before the deadline, and he writes tons of fantastic comments to help you do really well on papers! All you have to do is take advantage of all the help he offers!! A+++ TEACHER!

Carlin is absolutely great. Certainly one of the number one professors at Oshkosh, and I've never seen anyone so enthusiastic without being bothersome at the same time. Pompous attitude? Nah, he just knows what he's talking about, and the students benefit from the clarity of his answers to their questions because of his confidence.

I really enjoyed this class! He has so much energy, there is no way you're falling asleep. The tests were difficult and he's picky on the paper, but if I got an AB, anyone can. I would definitely recommend him if you're interested in philosophy...and even if you're not, you will be after him!

Despite what others are saying, he was more than willing to help me outside of class and was very nice about it. He is a great teacher. i asked him to do so many outside favors (like write a recomendation) and he did them all with a smile on his face. he would go the extra mile to help out his students.

Hes very joyful, very clear and nice to listen to. He definitely doesnt bore people. Probably the best phil professor at Osh.

Dr. Carlin is the best professor I've had at UW-Oshkosh! He's always excited to teach, and he listens to everyone's opinions with interest. He keeps his opinions out of class, and if you want help with a paper or class topic, all you have to do is ask him. Anyone who doesn't ask for help and gets a bad grade can only blame him/herself.

Great teacher-always keeps things interesting and has a genuine love for what he does!! I'd DEFINATELY reccomend him for any philosophy class.

I thought the class was quite difficult. Dr. Carlin on the other hand was awesome! He was helpful and energetic. Philosophy definitely requires deep thinking and lots of work.

I LOVED professor Carlin! I learned a lot in his class and while the exams are pretty challenging, if you study for them you will get atleast a C. Make sure you do the readings and the quizzes are an easy A! He was by far one of my favorite prof's and I'm taking him again for inter 175! It's hard work, but well worth your money.

Professor Carlin is awesome. His teaching ways make it easy and fun. So far I have learned alot from his class. All of his quizes are based on the reading that you were assigned the day before so I you read what you are suposed to, you will do fine. He is also very open to help you with any question that you have.

I had him for an Honors class and he was awesome! High-energy, makes philosophy interesting and exciting which--let's face it--is hard to do. Be prepared to debate/discuss things in class, but your participation is worth it because he's a lot of fun and you'll learn a lot.

Carlin is, hands down, the best professor I've come across on the UW-O campus. He has respectable knowledge in his field (and an obvious love of philosophy), and he has an electric personality that keeps the class interesting, as well as thought-provoking.

i am a business major and the only reason i continue to take phil classes are to have professor carlin. extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and interesting. by far the best professor i have come across at uwo. makes you want to come to class. test/papers can be challenging but are reasonable with regular attenence and notes

Amazing. Easily one of the best professors at UWO. I've taken four classes with him, and though I don't need it, I'm debating taking another next semester just to have him again. His classes (and enthusiasm) make the topics even more interesting, and the tests, while challenging, are completely doable. You'll come away actually learning something.

took the class as a gened with no real interest but thanks to carlin actually really am interested in the stuff we talked about. carlin is a ton of fun and very insightful. his tests were alright and his quizzes were a cinch as long as u do the reading even if u dont understand it which was often the case. carlin is FANTASTIC!

Insightful and inspiring! Carlin's use of arguments and objections to clarify a Philospher's idea helped me to thoroughly understand the content. The memorable facts and stories he used in lecture were highly entertaining.

An excellent teacher and a brilliant philosopher. What's great about him is his passion and enthusiasm. I only wish he would 'lay down the law' a little more and tell students when theyre off base (or obviously havent done the reading)Butthat's because hes so nice. And on a personal level, he has a great taste in music and is a champion brewmaster!

His enthusiasm for the subject makes his class extremely interesting and enjoyable. I actually looked forward to going to his class. I never thought I would be able to understand philosophy, but we him as my professor, it was very clear to understand. He's also super friendly.

Go to class, read the text, and be thoughtful; then you will see the results you want. He forces you to work and if you do, then you will do great in his course. ENTERTAING TO THE MAX!!! he is so funny and the examples he use are out there, but in the end really help to understand what the subject is about. DO NOT MISS CLASS! tests are difficult, but if you study how he advises, you will be fine. His passion about philosophy really shows and he always makes sure everyone understands the difficult material.

Awesome teacher! Thoroughly explains everything. Some of the subject matter can be confusing, so he will take as much time on it as the class needs. His exams are not that hard as long as you go to class and write down whatever he puts on the chalkboard. VERY interesting subject matter! Highly recommended this class.

Carlin is phenomenal. His enthusiasm makes whatever he is teaching fun. I enjoyed going to class everyday and actually decided to study abroad with the philosophy department because of him. I recommend taking any/all of his classes!

An amazing teacher!! He always tells funny stories to help you remember different topics, and his tests are completely from lecture notes. Quiz points are out of 100 no matter how many quizes you take, so you can get over 100% for overall quiz points! Tests and quizes were very easy, and I always looked forward to going to class. GREAT PROFESSOR

Awesome professor. If your taking philosophy just for a gen ed I would strongly suggest taking it with him! You learn a lot and your interest might even increase! He keeps class interesting and if you go to class and take notes you will do fine in the class.

Professor carlin did an unbelievable job. I was able to understand almost all of his lectures except when I would get distracted by his abnormally large head. I was however able to get past by mid term and accept it as normal mutation.

Dr. Carlin is by far my favorite professor on this campus. I have had him for intro level, upper level, special topics, and study abroad courses, and he is/will remain the best academic as well as most fun/intriguing professor that I have had.

Gives good outlines on the board that you can write down, but also explains it it such a way that you can understand the notes when you look back on them later. His written tests can be challenging...he will give you a list of questions a week in advance, and you must memorize them all.

Best Professor you are likely to have in any subject. It may be cliche' but Dr. Carlin is truly one of those teachers that changes your life. I wish I could have taken him for all my classes! Hes definitely not easy but the grade you recieve is the grade you earn

Carlin is super enthusiastic, so if you have him for a morning class (like I did) you won't have to try too hard to stay awake. He's a pretty cool guy and super helpful. The only thing is that he's a pretty hard grader when it comes to papers, so you'll have to put in some effort on those.

Carlin is an overall great professor. He really seems to love his job and engages the class in discussion. He's pretty goofy and makes the class laugh a lot. His papers are pretty tough but he allows you to give him a rough draft and he will help you correct it. He'll do whatever he can to help you, definitely my favorite professor at UWO.

Superb. A real treat. I just wish I would not have left this class to my last semester. He is the very best prof I've had in four years at UWO, followed by 2) C. Bauder 3) J. Gemin 4) D. Siemers 5) T. Slagter. Carlin will make you think. He'll also make you work--but he's well worth the extra time and effort. IMHO, you will not regret taking him.

Carlin keeps class super interesting and fun. He is also great at making things easy to understand and genuinely cares about his students. He is tough at grading papers but his tests are not difficult.

What can I say? Dr. Carlin is great! The class isn't easy, but that is due to the complex subject material. The exams consist of short answer and essay questions which he gives you a week before the exam. This testing system is very rewarding to those who put in a little effort and work through the questions ahead of time. Wonderful professor!

This was a great class! The first half of the semester was devoted to overarching moral theories, and the second half focused on the application of these theories to contemporary, controversial issues. There are two papers which are probably the most challenging part of the class. The exam questions are given to you ahead of time, so study!

Dr. Carlin is by FAR my favorite professor. He has impacted me personally and academically. He gives great constructive feedback. You have to work for your grade, but at the end of the course you improve your writing tremendously. His positive energy and enthusiasm is contagious!

Carlin is interesting and keeps the class talking. He grades papers rather toughly in comparison with other professors. Tests were writing long answers (3 questions each, a few paragraphs per question).

The essays in his class are graded very harshly but fairly. His form of exams are amazing. He is a great teacher who makes sure everyone understands the topic before going on. But he explains things well enough everyone gets it

Carlin is one of the best professors that you could possibly have on campus. He is always super supportive and guides you to the right direction when you're struggling. I've had him for Honors 275 as well. Too bad I probably won't have another chance with this inspirational honors director!

I loved Dr. Carlin! He genuinely cares about his students and wants you to learn. He is a great guy and makes lectures super interesting. There was only 2 exams the entire semester and 2 papers. The rest of the points came from participating.

He really cares & wants you to do well. I took this class abroad along with H275 & it was super easy. Participation matters & he gave us questions from the exam beforehand (long & short answers) so it wasn't that hard. Very interesting class & he makes it fun. 275 is a few papers and he made the classes connect so they blended together.

As with any Honors College class participation is valued and graded. He is by far the most caring professor/administrator I have met with during my career at UWO. If I could do it all over again I would take more of his classes.

Best professor Ive had so far. Lectures arent boring and keep your attention. Encourages class discussions without pushing it one way or another. Be ready to read for every class, but most articles arent too long. Quizzes arent hard and gives test questions a week before, so if you do the readings, come to class, and study, youll do good.

What is there to say about Dr. Carlin that has not been said already. The man is dedicated to his work and it shows. If you genuinely care about school (or even if you don't) Carlin will go above and beyond to help you and allow you to have a great time. I would give him a 6/5 if I could.

I think Dr. Carlin is a superhuman. Take a class with him, especially if you are in the Honors College.

He is a fantastic professor; he makes it enjoyable to learn. He allows you to send in a draft and gives awesome feedback to fix your essay. There is often a quiz every day, but they are really easy (as long as you do the reading for that day).

I feel like I participated a lot, and I only missed one class for being out of the state. I got an 80 on participation. He's a very tough grader, but I genuinely looked forward to seeing him in class everyday. He made things easy to understand and provided you with the test questions prior to the finals. Love Carlin.

Dr. Carlin is a very nice guy! This class is a must if you're in the Honors College, but it won't be a favorite. The class is 95% lecture, and most revolve around philosophy, which Dr. Carlin does his best to liven up. There are pop quizzes, papers, and exams, which you'll want to put work into.

Dr. Carlin taught my HNRS175 Power and he was an awesome professor. I would recommend him to anyone and thought his class was great. I am even taking a philosophy class with him next semester because of how much I enjoy him as a professor. There are a few papers to write for 175 but other than that it was a very good class to take.

Dr. Carlin is a very caring professor. He gives you good feedback on your papers in a timely fashion, whether it's for a grade or rough draft. Participating in his class is a super important for your participation grade, and participating helps you remember the material for the exams better. I loved this class!

Is really passionate about what he teaches and teaches about relevant topics. Made us think in a good way about the topics and class and was open and honest about quizzes, exams, and papers. Would definitely recommend taking any classes with him.

Dr. Carlin is great and honestly made the discussions very interesting and easy to follow. There is a reading for every class and some pop quizzes about the readings, but he is up front about it. He also grades the papers and exams a little tough, but not too bad especially since he allows you to send him your paper for feedback.
