Very interesting teacher, with very straight forward tests
Excellent teacher. I ACTUALLY MISS my hist. class now that it's over. Intelligent, interesting and engaging lecturer. Candid and fun in class. Really wants you to learn about history, not just memorize dates. Tests are not overly easy, but give painless, productive extra credit and is fair grader.
I really liked this teacher. He made history interesting and you can tell that he likes teaching, which helps the learning process. Tests can be hard or easy depending on how you study. Too much info to cram.
Very good teacher, kept things intresting. Pretty willing to help out with any questions. Really enjoys the essays on tests which kind of sucked, but besides that really good teacher. Highly recommended

Awesome teacher. Very cynical and funny which makes class a lot better to handle. Tests are a bit hard, but if you take notes and study EVERYTHING you write down you should be fine.
awesome i never have to look at my watch
Begins each semester by asking students who listen to Limbaugh to raise their hand. Then tells class republicans are heartless and hateful. Those who raised their hand are screwed. Those who have republican parents are insulted and forced to "sweat it out" that he will grade fairly. Term papers assigned grade without any written comments.
Tests are made up of class lectures + reading outside of class. Tests are multiple choice with 6 identification short essays. He is an awesome teacher and makes History a bit more appealing for those that are not interested in the first place.
Goines has a great ability to tie everything together in a very entertaining way. He's both straight-forward and clear in what he expects from his students. I liked this class a lot more than I had expected.
Great teacher! I have never enjoyed history until i took his class. It isn't difficult to do well in this class at all. He will lecture the full hour but its like he's telling a story, very entertaining. all you have to do is write down the key points he is discussing and study those notes for the test. He is a very funny and a nice guy.
Anyone who bashes this guy is a jack @$$. Goines keeps you interested for the majority of the class. If you want an A just study. It is that simple. 30 mins 5 times a week will give you one. This guy is FUNNY. This guy with Jack A. Bucco are a great combo. They know how to run the show, and keep you entertained. These guys own ACC. Read the damn bo
Very laid back. GOOD TEACHER. just listen in class, take notes, and he gives out answers. Study those, and read some more if you arent clear. Easy.
He encourages class participation and is always happy to answer questions during the lecture. The requirements for the essays on his tests have improved my scores on all history tests that I've taken with other teachers since then. His class taught me to pay attention to detail, since then I've never scored less than full credit on a history essays
I never knew I like history so much until I took this class Goines is so entertaining, I took him in the morning and you would think I would fall asleep with a long lecture of history but he makes you want to listen with his jokes and stories. Would recommend him to everyone!
Very enthusiastic. Tests require studying, but are not ridiculously hard. Attendance is not mandatory, but he draws most of his test from lecture. Very clear, easy to understand.
He's not easy but not hard. Go to class, take notes and study for the tests and you'll be fine. His lectures are interesting and funny. Definitely a good US History I teacher.
I read most of the comments, and all seem to be pretty nice. I hate to be the one that leaves the negative comment. I took his online class, unfortunately i was making poor grades and never did he bother to ask if he could be in anyway helpful. He really took advantage the fact that he had no live communication. Bad exp from online class.
I took the Native American History Honors course. He is one of the top scholars in the country on Plains Indians. He is an AMAZING, BRILLIANT instructor and he challenges you to work! TERRIFIC COURSE! Take this course if you want to be challenged and LEARN the TRUTH about Native Americans. He also has a library degree. DO NOT BE LATE OR PLAGARIZE
Amazing teacher. He tells you exactly what to do to get an A.Gives international geography questions for extra credit. NOT boring at all but I LOVE history! Go to class. Study. IF you do bad in here,it is on YOU!HE is a great lecturer!
Don't take the online course, I know that he's a great teacher in person, but the department standard tests for the online course is impossible to pass. It's "read the book, take the test." The textbook is fine, it's just the @#$# tests, you can know the textbook up and down and still fail the tests brutally, there's nothing more to the lessons.
Tends to get carried away sometimes with presenting opinion as fact which can be offensive. He gives about 6 essay questions on the test and carefully scrutinizes them. The lecture effectively paints a broad picture, but you need the book to pass the tests. Very friendly, but not the best prof i've ever had.
took...or should I say attempted the online course. seriously doesnt matter how well i knew the material in the book, the exam layout is so terrible. it is the testing style of "all of the foloowing are true except" type of format. . . however very tricky. I had to withdrawl in order to save my GPA. good luck.
He is very awesome teacher, really help. I love his lecture. I would highly recommend him. I am so lucky to take his class.
Goines is awesome. He is not only the best prof at ACC he is the best teacher ever. He is smart, funny and interesting. I hated history before I took his classes and now I'm thinking of majoring in it.
Every class I learned a lot and laughed a lot. Goines is awesome. The tests are pretty challenging so you have to go to class, but I guarantee you will enjoy his lectures. Best prof ever.
Condescending and rude, this guy is more concerned about showing off his knowlege than helping students learn. Grades tests very hard and doesn't review for tests in class. I definitely would not recommend him.
This was my favorite class last semester. Goines makes history as interesting as it can be and he really cares if students learn and share his passion. Tests are pretty hard but worth it because he is stand up comedian funny.
If you want an easy A then this is not the course for you. If you want to learn about American history then take a class from Goines. The tests are pretty hard, but the lectures are funny and interesting
One of my favorite teachers I've ever had. I have always hated history and he made me feel like I was just listening to a really good story!!! Anyone who says that his tests are hard are crazy, if you come to class, which he makes you want to do, you're golden because you remember each interesting lecture. Took him for both histories made A's
I thoroughly enjoyed Goines' lectures, but I got a C because I just didn't have time to read the text book. My bad. Reading is an absolute MUST if you want an A or B in this class.
Awesome teacher! His test are hard because they are specific. You have to read the textbook but he lets you know exactly what he'll be grading. I looked forward to his class and he was very funny.
He loves to teach and its reflected in class. Classes are well organised and entertaining. He gives a perspective on history that doesn't insult your intelligence. By far THE BEST history teacher I have ever had.
I wish I could have taken US Hist II with him. His lectures are always interesting. I could listen to him all day. He knows what he's talking about, he's funny, and he is very clear about what will be on the test. Best History teacher I've ever had. I always looked forward to his class.
Best history teacher ever .... its like turning on a documentary. Dude knows his stuff.... may be a little opinionated for some peoples taste but tho i disagreed with some of his personal views i still loved the class
I took his online distance learning course. The study guide has all the information you need to know and the tests are easy. There is an option to do a book review for a "B" if you score below 24 of 30 on the tests. However, you must complete an 8 page research for an A.
My favorite teacher ever. Goines is interesting, smart and funny. He is definitely a liberal, but always welcomed others' ideas and did not push an agenda. You have to go to class to do well, but his lectures age great.
I took him two semesters in a row and he is my favorite teacher. He is funny and his class is easy IF you show up. Reading is necessary but you can skim through for terms. His extra credit questions will make you feel stupid though. Buy a globe and study it.
I want him to be my friend! He's fair, interesting, friendly and knows his stuff. Taking him next semester! He gives out a helpful study sheet in advance to follow along during the semester. I recommend recording this class becasue of the sheer volume of information.
A very passionate teacher, loves to get into class discussions & really knows his stuff! he gives you plenty of reviews for tests, but you have to go to class cause it's a lot of information! tests are fair only if you study! he does make it pretty clear what you should be prepared for.
Great Prof! I loved his classes and he is very interesting! His tests are very hard so don't take him unless you are prepared to do the work!
Took his class distance learning. He responds to emails within the day. Appeared interested in what I had to say and provided positive feedback. I would take him again.
Loved this guy, fair grader, funny, interesting, kind of sounds like Mr. Garrison from South Park, Mkay? You don't really have to read your textbook, although you should. class is all lecture, but very helpful.
I hated history before taking Prof. Goines' class. He's a smart ass which makes his lectures more interesting. It's more as if he's telling a story than even giving a lecture. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you skip a class you miss a lot of information. He gives you a study guide that really helps and reading the book assures an A. I recommend
really good professor. really straight forward and crack jokes every now and then to keep class interesting. fair slightly easy on the grading. just study what u have to and you'll do B average. book not mandatory but highly recommended to study for some terms that he doesn't go over in lecture
You have to read or you will not pass the tests. There are 4 tests you will take in the testing center. The biggest effort to get an A in the class is to history project. I recommend you start immediately with the beginning of the semester. The tests are HARD. You need to know which candidates were "wet" and Rep or Dem. Ouch! This was a hard A.
Goines is awesome. Great lecturer. He's funny and smart and is my favorite prof at ACC. He's pretty tough so you have to go to class, but you will want to hear his lectures.
Prof. Goines is fantastic! I just finished his History I class and am wishing I could take him for History II too. He's hilarious, really interacts with the class a lot, explains everything very clearly. He really knows his stuff. However, to get multiple choice questions on the test right you need to READ THE DAMN BOOK. Take this class! :)
Makes everything extremely clear for an online class on how to get the grade you want.
He's a great lecturer that doesn't skip a beat and knows what he's talking about. He has a great sense of humor, is open to questions and is approachable. As entertaining as the course is he requires specific detail in his tests which means STUDYING. If you enjoy history you will love him.
Follow the handout and what he states to study and you will do great. I got behind and did not get to hand in my book review. Tests are long but study what he gives you, read the book and use his on-line tutorial to help study the material. He answered my questions quickly and overall very helpful and easily understood what was needed.
Just took him for history 1 and I loved it. Highly recommend to anyone who needs this class. He is a tough grader, you've got to read the book to do well. I would take him again if he taught history 2. Smart and really funny!
Really loved his class! I honestly did not even touch the book and got all As on his test. However, it is crucial to go to all his classes. He's a great lecturer; he repeats the things that are important so that writing notes isn't a pain. I just studied my notes and his tests are a piece of cake. Make sure to know the vocab he doesn't go over.
Online course. Inaccurate study guides, some test questions not covered in book/guide. 8 page research paper for an A? Get real. Syllabus claims accommodations could be made but professor didn't even consider them. Core curriculum class professor trying too hard
if you want to learn take him if you want to make an A (or easy B) don't take him
Professor Goines' grading standards are tough, but I believe they are meant only to prepare his students for the high standards of advanced-level classes they will eventually have to take. Sadly, it seems too few students understand the value of hard work. While getting an A in his class is no cakewalk, it is well worth the effort.
Prof. Goines is a very hands-off teacher. I'm not sure if he cares much about his students. This class was online so my only interaction was through email, but his responses felt very impersonal and "templated." Read the chapters, study the guides, and take the test. The test questions are tricky so make sure you read carefully and study a lot!
Prof. Goines is a very hands-off teacher. I took him for both History I and II. Don't expect him to provide a lot of direction. Read the syllabus, follow the instructions and you should be fine. The class is mostly reading the chapters, memorizing the test questions, and then going to take the exams. Test questions can be tricky so read carefully.
It looks like the typical ACC history course, you read the book and answer the questions. Still, I really liked Goines. He responded to all of my emails right away and really helped me write a good research paper.
This is the definition of someone who just collects a check for doing absolutely nothing. Don't ever take this professor. I took him online and all his class is, is read a couple chapters and take a test at the end. No HW, no discussion, nothing else. Just that. He doesn't respond to e-mails either. I hope they hire professors who want to teach.
College history classes are lecture-heavy by definition, so I was glad that Mr. Goines delivered funny, interesting lectures. Provides a paper that tells you literally every topic that will be on the exam, *and* there's an extra credit opportunity on every test. Not a difficult course. Yes, you need to show up to class and read the text.
Goines is my favorite ACC prof. Like all of the other reviews say - you have to go to class, but you will want to hear his lectures. He is funny and smart and wants to work with you to make sure you do well
Prof Goines has amazing lectures. He will talk the entire time so get ready. However, he makes the lectures very interesting. Only four tests and a paper make up your grade so study a lot. Very liberal, but when I voiced my opposition, he was respectful about it. I would take him again for sure. Have to work hard for your grade, but its worth it!
Engaging professor during lectures, but if you don't want to take a class with 4 exams and only one written assignment then don't take him. To study for exams, you basically have to prepare to answer questions with paragraph-long answers, which makes for stressful and ineffective studying. Didn't feel like I got any real chances to prove myself.
Great professor, knowledgable/funny. Lectures take entire class time &are crucial to attend. Only 4 tests and 1 major paper. Worst part about his class is grading. Im an A student in hist and got a C. To get higher than a B, you must go to every class, read textbook &follow up w/ him after turning in major paper
Overall, Professor Goines was a nice guy, but an extremely difficult teacher. Im a straight A student and I got a B in midst of doing everything I could to study/improve my understanding and grade. It was extremely frustrating and time consuming. His lectures were interesting, but often hard to follow while trying to take helpful notes.
the best history professor ever. I HATE history, but he made it interesting. Every class is a long lecture, but he tells it in story format. He is hilarious and nice... office hours help! I managed to write down every single word he said because he repeats absolutely everything. Tests are long, but verbatim his lectures. dont read the textbook
Taking this online and the only thing you have access to is the textbook and the test review questions. The only thing you are graded on is your 5 exams so if you want to make the grade in this class you have to make sure you pass the exams well. No power points or notes available so this class isn't for me. Its hard to just learn from a textbook.
PLEASE READ! My guy Patrick is a super cool dude. Im not too good at history in the first place but this class is DUMB hard and he teaches it as if we're all history majors. You HAVE to go to class, read the book and pray you know the right material. ALSO what doesn't help is the only grades in the class is the 4 HARD tests& vague book report.
He is my favorite ACC prof. Lectures are long but amazing. I'm surprised that people think this class is hard. Yes you have to go to class, but he is so interesting you will want to go. Just take good notes and let him know if you have a question. Tests are straight forward and mostly come from lectures. I made an A and just skimmed the book.
This professor is SUPER HARD for an online class. You need to know every aspect of each of the chapters to do well on the tests. Also, to get an A in the class you have to write an eight-page research paper but you have to qualify for it. To do that you can't make lower than an 80 on each test otherwise you can't qualify for the research paper.
All around great professor, very passionate about what he teaches and wants students to succeed. Lectures like hes telling a story rather than lecturing, which makes it easy to pay attention and take notes. Tons of material is covered, but its interesting and isnt hard to keep up if you attend class. Grade is based on 4 tests and a book review.
Nice guy, good communication, but unless ur a history guru, DON'T TAKE ONLINE!!! The tests are crazy hard and the textbook is pretty much worthless because the answers in the book aren't all the same/in depth enough as on his tests. Hardest class I've taken in college because the amount of reading & researching is crazy. BE ready to STUDY & PRAY!
My words of advice: Don't take his online class.
Was recommended to me by a friend who must not have taken his online class. Ridiculously hard, txtbk doesn't help, & study guides are long & unhelpful. Only grades are 5 tests & a paper & the only way to get A or B is to write the paper, but can only do so w certain test average. Do NOT recommend online; even for strong students. 1st C in college.
His syllabus might seem strict but he is a very good guy and is willing to work with you. He responded very quickly to my emails and helped me alot
The whole entire course was five tests that weren't very much like the study guide, and anytime he was emailed he gave a vague response that didn't answer what you asked. Extremely unclear in his syllabus, and you have to study for those tests or you will fail.
When I heard the whole class was just lectures I was super worried, but he is so good at making lectures super interesting! Definitely have to study hard for his tests and show up to class in order to get a good grade. Most interesting history class I've ever taken!
This class was hard on its own. You have no options for extra credit. Tests are nothing like the study guide. No help at all. Although he responds to emails, the are so vague and confusing.
I just love Dr. Goines. His lectures are long but he is funny and really interesting. This was my favorite history class I have ever taken.
Professor Goines is one of the most amazing professors Ive ever had. Ive hated history all of my life and I looked forward to going to his class everyday. His lectures are entertaining and keep you engaged. There are only 5 grades but the tests are straight from the lecture so if you take good notes and study well for the tests youll do well
Very passionate about subject. Only grades are 4 tests and 1 easy book review. Get ready to write a ton because lectures are only aided by pictures on a slideshow and you need to know all of the info covered for the tests' short answer questions. Good professor, just a lot to know in detail (no dates to memorize tho)
Professor Goines' tests were nearly impossible to get an A on. He has a short answer section that he never clarified how long or detailed the answers had to be. You must read the textbook to pass the tests even though his lectures are lengthy and packed with information. You have to know a lot of material so make sure you read.
LOVED this professor. If I could, I would take this class again. It was no blowoff, but I enjoyed every second in class. He is an amazing lecturer. Tells things like a story to where the information sticks better, and he is very funny/light-hearted. I am now taking another history class, but I miss Goines so much and wish it was him teaching it.
Lectures/Attendance is CRUCIAL. If you don't go to class you're going to miss a BIG chunk of your test. Literally missing one class will make you miss 1/4 of the info. This being said his lectures are like a story and are easy to follow/ take notes. The first test is rough which kinda downed by grade but after you can def pull As.
Goines was definitely my favorite professor this past year. His lectures were incredible and he was super knowledgeable. However, the tests are somewhat difficult and you really have to work hard for them. They make up most if not all the course grade, so studying for hours is a must. It's worth it though to experience the man the myth the legend.
Honestly, the grading on the tests was very inconsistent. I think he just graded hard to grade hard. I'm an A student at UT now, but really struggled to keep a high B. Interesting guy who is kind of fun to listen to. I would stay away from the class if you can.
Professor Goines is the best History professor I had ever had! He was always available to help. His lecture are so well-knitted and prepared. After taking his classes, I want to be a history teacher. That's how good he is! He shared his passion! His class requires efforts. You can't be lazy and expect a good grade and your professor to be god.
Don't take this class if you can avoid. While Goines is kind of funny, he was not a good teacher. He was rude, not helpful, and talks nonstop. You need to read or you won't do well. It is really hard to keep up and write good notes because he doesn't have a powerpoint on screen. I have over a 3.8 at UT and can say this class was unnecessarily hard.
