Difficult, but great.

It's the most difficult class I've ever taken, but I got a lot out of it

DON'T TAKE!! DON'T TAKE!! DON'T TAKE!! DON'T TAKE!! DON'T TAKE!! DON'T TAKE!! DON'T TAKE!! DON'T TAKE!! DON'T TAKE!! DON'T TAKE!!
Lots of work--and you really have to do it and read everything to keep up with her--but she's fun, not mean at all. Took a lot away from the classes
She's about as fun as getting your eyes poked. She sucks, don't waste your time unless you absolutely have to. If you do, be prepared to dedicate your life to Economics. And Alan Greenspan.

Excellent Prof. She knows her stuff quite well, and she's easy to get along with. If you struggle with her, it's most likely because you're an idiot that can't handle high school algebra. Try taking econ at MIT, or Stanford where it's a lot more difficult
High school algebra was much better than this lady.......
LOOK THE OTHER WAY WHEN DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT TO TAKE HER!!
Excellent Professor! If you need extra help she is more than available, but you will have to read and contribute, don't take it if you want to breeze through economics.
Very nice person. Very hard teacher. Likes details. Very relaxed class. Open discussion. Exams are extremely hard, all short essays. 1 PowerPoint presentation and 1 5-page paper.

You will learn a lot, class is not easy though... class is interesting and interactive. She is really nice and always willing to help...does require studying ( i ve gotten the most out of this class than from any class at bryant.)
GO HUSKIES!!!

Excellent teacher- hard exams but you will come out of the class learning a LOT, definitely the best professor I have EVER had- if you're thinking about majoring or minoring in economics, definitely take Bates. She's AWESOME!

Excellent, very interesting professor. Not an easy topic but she does a good job making it understandable. Love the hints from Heloise. :)
Bates is awful. Shes the worst teacher ive ever had in this school. She not only confuses me but she confuses herself as well. Class Averages of 60 and 49 through the first two tests. So either all 28 students are really dumb, or bates sucks at teaching.
I would definitely have to say that she is one of the professors that I have hated taking the most. We had a fire alarm during one of our midterms and she wouldn't give us any extra time to finish it. She's very picky, huge deductions for litle mistakes.

Bates is a great teacher, but she expects effort from her students! You will learn alot. And in response to the kid that gave her a horrible review but all 5's, you're just the stupid pal! Figure out the rankings jerk and then maybe you can get past a freshman level course!

She's pretty hard, but you will learn a lot in the class. I didn't do well on the first few quizzes, but once you get used to them they aren't that bad, plus she usually droips the lowest grade.
Everybody's looking for a handout. The fact is, this teacher is a goddam genius. She belongs at Harvard University. These goofs that are posting these other ratings don't do her justice. LAURIE BATES IS MY PERSONAL JESUS.
Only teacher for 313. Dont leave till 2nd semester senior year, because huge number of kids drop and retake later because its so brutal. Get ready to work your tail off, and wake up in the middle fo the night from economics nightmares
Laurie Bates is absolutely ruthless.
Very hard class, very hard topic. She is perfectly realistic, and tries to get the info across. She offers all the help one can get, and often times it's reccomendable to take it. Extremely hard topic, she's great.
Her quizzes demand detail, and the final does a great job of coming from the entire semester. You will need to not only study, but understand the material verbatim. She is very clear, very helpful, and very friendly, but be prepared for a tough class. I did learn a lot, though.
Very good teacher. quizzes are a bit tough, but nothing anyone can't handle. I recommend her for this class, you will learn a lot
Taking this professor is one of the worst things that I've ever done. She spent 1/2 the time talking about her kids and irrelevant topics. We had a fire drill during a midterm she made us take the midterm outside on the pavement outside we lost 20+ minutes. She's Evil.
Hardest Class you will ever take. Period. Bates knows this course backwards, forwards and inside out, and she expects the same from you. Even if you get a C in this class, you will learn more than in any course in Bryant. Just be prepared to take it twice to get a passing grade.
Wicked nice lady, but easily the most demanding class I've ever taken. Get all the help you can from her and other classmates. Expect to start having dreams about isoquants and supply and demand curves coming to life and attacking you in your sleep about halfway through through the semester.
She will do ANYTHING to lower your grade. For our honors micro class, she decided to give our class a 62 average in class participation because we did well on the final. And our class participated so much that she had to tell us to shut up! Take this class if you want to get cheated out of a grade, as having your straight As broken sucks.
OK, I must admit that lowering our class average in our macro class wasn't fair at all, but she is still not that bad of a teacher...probably my favorite class all year-i learned alot, but was able to have fun at the same time. I'd recommend taking her, except for the fact that she used our class participation grade to scale downwards.
awesome.

Don't expect to have a life when you take ECO 313 but she is really great! Yea its a lot of work and most people get D's and C's but you learn ALOT of econ that keeps you competitive with grads from schools like Harvard. She is intelligent and is willing to help. You will learn alot and its well worth the long nights at the library!
By far the hardest class i have taken at bryant...need it for Minor or Major. She is the devil, will laugh when people get frustrated
Look, she' hard, but you learn a lot. She offered to replace our quiz avreage with our final exam grade if we did better on the final. And the final is open book. Thats very fair. She will help if you go to her office, do your part and she will do hers.
Shes not the easiet teacher, but if you pay attention, ask questions, and go see her or the tutors in ACE you have the potential to do well. Can be a little stressful at times, and you need her to explain a few concepts over and over, but you will learn from her.
Plays favorites to those in the front row, so don't sit in the back. Class average is always an F for quizzes/tests and she doesn't understand why. Hard grader. ****y sometimes if class can't follow her immediately. Sometimes resorts to the textbook to correct what she says in class because she gets confused. AWFUL!!
Consider this post as my apology, Professor...Bates taught me that college is about more than about grades, and although I thought I was gypped by her grading as a freshman, I now realize the value of what I learned in that class. It allowed me to develop a mentality that thirsts for knowledge, and I have become a better person as a result. :)
Stay away form her!! She can't explain anything, her quizzes are ridicously hard, and it seems as though she is out to make sure people fail. If you are enrolled in her class, get out while you still can. If your in the honors program, this class will ruin your chances of graduating with honors.
Had her for honors micro, challenging course with a challenging teacher. Gives you chances for extra credit sometimes. Quizzes and exams are tough, but if you read the chapter and take notes they are ok. Also there are a couple of projects that if you take your time, you can boost your grade. If you want to get the most out of micro, take her.

Honors Micro. If you failed this class you didn't try. I find it easy because i do the work. She makes clear expectations. She really wants you to do well, and she knows what shes doing. She talks about her daughter alot, but it's funny. Take her if you want to learn something!
Hard grader, but really tries to have her students understand. you can meet with her after class for clarity on the subject. gets off topic sometimes, really excited about economics.

Bates is awesome. You will learn so much in her class and if you review your notes, you'll be fine. She's really funny, class flies by and i love her!
Honestly this was the hardest most demanding class I have ever taken, ever. She is very nice, but I cannot rate her teaching skills on this atribute. Her classes are incomprehensible and virtually pointless. Her quizes are nothing but trickery, and she will not answer questions in class. I agree with most negative remarks made previously.
This class is an economic bad, and because Bates has monopolistic power over the market for it, students are forced to pay the price of taking this necessary class. Very challenging, and all else seems easy afterwards. Good luck.
Bates rocks!!
Had her for both Honors Micro and Macro, and loved both classes. She makes clear expectations, knows what shes talking about, and makes connections to the real world. You really do learn alot, and you walk away with the ability to talk intelligently on the state of our economy--which will help you everywhere.
She definitely knows what she is talking about, sometimes confusing, tests are extremely hard but ok if you put in the effort, rarely used the wicked expensive text so dont bother buying it
I had her for honors microeconomics and macroeconomics. She is a very good teacher who is willing to help her students. Go to class and put in the effort--if you dont, you shouldnt expect to do well. I tutor eco over in ACE now because of her.
Evil.
By far one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but I did learn a lot. She is extremely nice and funny but can get off topic easily. If you pay attention and take good notes you will do fine. Watch out for quizzes and papers, they're challenging. However, she does give out extra credit which is generally pretty easy. I'm taking her again!
Lectures are confusing, grades arbitrarily, does not answer many questions in class.
Difficult material, but if you have a question, just ask, she'll be more than happy to explain it until you really understand.
Best class I've taken at Bryant. SHe's very hard but if you participate in her class and go to her office hours you will do fine. The rest of the profs at Bryant for econ suck and don't teach anything, she's at least making your 40,000 tuition worth it
She makes the work more hard then it has to be. her lectures are confusing and you won't really learn anything in class, only on your own. overall not up to bryant standards for teaching ability. Pretty disappointed.
this ones a doosey...she offers no help, went to office hours and she canceled. glad I'm only a commuter and didn't have classes those days she didn't show up...jerk. i love driving to campus for an 8am to receive no help. since this is a requirement your pretty much screwed. i recommend you cheat unless you wanna take it twice. take it from a grad
I absolutely loved this class. Professor Bates has a great grading policy- I had a C all semester and got an A in the class because of my final grade. Definitely worth the work. Lectures are somewhat confusing, but she's definitely willing to help, just ask.
When you get a 69 on a test and beat the class average, you know there's something wrong with this class. She is fairly clear with explaining and helping you understand, but the test questions are more complex than the practice examples, and she grades them with a vengeance. Good luck passing this class, i suggest don't take it in the first place.
Her concepts are very confusing and the materials taught in class are irrelevant to textbook. Prof. Bates is smart...she is essentially eliminating future competition in the labor market by preventing you from becoming an economist. We're nothing but DEAD WEIGHT LOSS under her monopolized market. The irony:she's an free market advocate. Hypocrite!
Although this is the most challenging class I have taken at Bryant, it is also rewarding to realize that what I have learned can be applied to other classes and beyond. You definitely need to be dedicated and stay on top of the material. Make sure you go to her for help right away if you encounter any difficulties. She is willing to help you!
This is possibly one of the hardest courses I've ever taken. Her tests are near impossible because they are vague questions that she expects specific answers. You could be on the right track but get the question wrong because you didn't use the specific word she wanted. She considers a B a great grade in her class. Definitely plays favorites.
Great teacher, explains everything really well. The class is hard, but if you put in the effort you will do fine. If you get a better grade on your final than your quiz average, you can replace your quiz average with your final grade. I took her for micro and macro and got As. Would definitely recommend.
I learned so much this semester in honors macro. If you pay attention and keep up with the wall street journal articles, you will be fine. Plus, if your final grade is better than your quiz average, that grade takes over. She's an excellent teacher, I would take her again.
Ok, so let me clear the air about Professor Bates. . It's really easy to get a bad grade. But if you pay attention in class and take notes. Rewrite your notes as she tells you to. Then go to her office hours whenever you have the smallest question. You will be fine. She is so nice and always willing to help, go to her EARLY!!! It makes life easier!
her tests were open-ended questions, but if you had a good understanding of the material the class wasn't too bad (studying is necessary for this class)
Prof Bates is a great teacher. She explains everything as thoroughly as possible and answers all questions in class. The class is difficult because the quizzes force you to really know your stuff but if you actually study effectively (read the textbook and take good notes) and go to her for help you can and will do fine. I would take her again.
The most dreaded class at Bryant University and rightfully so: Laurie Bates is a tough grader who challenges her students. If you're looking for a GPA boost, turn away. If you're looking for a professor who will teach you TONS, take Laurie. READ THE BOOK.
Simply, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am an average student with a 3.2 GPA. This is by far the hardest, most confusing, most in-depth class I have ever taken. She has a PhD in economics and I was in her first non-honors class. Grade is based off 3 exams (including the cumulative final). I cannot stress it enough, DO NOT TAKE. RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!
Great professor who is more than willing to help. Use office hours wisely. Great personality too
Professor Bates is one of the best professors at Bryant in my opinion. Though she expects a lot our of her students, she is more than willing to help and is a very nice woman! You WILL learn from her! Would definitely take her class again, but she isn't for people who want an "easy A."
Professor Bates does not get enough credit. She expects a lot from her students but she is always available to help. Her exams are not memorization they are applications, so make sure you study. Would definitely recommend her.
She is very helpful. But she is hard to follow in class because economics is so boring. She doesn't use blackboard at all so that's not helpful. And 2 of the 4 homework assignments you need to find a newspaper article about economics which is very annoying. Not terrible teacher, but her class is difficult to do good in.
no multiple choice can go to office hours but it might not help talks kind of fast and doesn't write all the important info on the board so you might not get everything you need to know in your notes. withdrew passing from the class didn't want to tank my GPA and lose honors privileges
Bates is super nice but her lectures are very flighty and her notes on the board are hard to follow. Office hours and trips to ACE are a must-go if you want to do well. Do the readings and copy the notes you take in class over and over. All open ended questions on tests. For honors, Friedman is soul-sucking. Would not recommend.
her lectures were very all over the place. She would attempt to explain a concept and often times end up confusing the class more. Exams were very difficult and required a lot of outside reading if you want to succeed.
She expects a lot out of her students but truly wants you to do well. On day one she tells you what you need to do to succeed in her class, follow that and you'll do fine. Attend office hours early and often. Her tests (quizzes) are very tough and are all graphical analysis. Take her if you're an economics major and want to challenge yourself.
This is a great professor. Anyone who says otherwise needs to shut their cakeholes. Its hard work, but worth it if you want to be in the economics field. If you fail its because you failed yourself. She is very clear and concise on exactly what she wants.
So I read a review for Professor Bates on this site and things didn't look so well but I still thought I would give her a chance because the class was at a good time for me. HUGE MISTAKE. This women is very smart and knows her stuff but she goes through materials so quickly and is not very well at explaining things on a student level. DO NOT TAKE!
Not an easy professor, but definitely a good one. Very thorough lecturer and I took a lot from her class
For Micro I heard she was good, but Macro was terrible. Her lectures rarely had a logical flow and she generally doesn't like answering questions. She seems nice at first, but she has weird and unreasonable expectations. I was warned not to take and didn't listen, don't do it.
Like others said, she is a lot better for micro than macro. She comes all discombobulated to class and sometimes jumps around from topic to topic. She also says to keep things in separate boxes if they shouldnt be mixed but doesnt make it clear what she is saying. She doesnt explain things super clearly. Not hard to pass but dont expect an a
Bates is a fine professor of this course. Some may think she is too tough and view her badly, but not really if you follow her guidelines. Pay Attention to the lectures and REVIEW your notes. It is really important that you understand the concepts. If you go over them you will do fine in the class. REVIEW EVERYTHING she teaches in the lectures.
Dr. Bates was a great professor for both 400 level classes I took with her. She has a sense of humor and as long as you back your responses with econ knowledge she appreciates it.
