Wonderful professor who has lots of great real life stories that makes class interesting. Gives TONS of extra credit, and the exams were super easy. She is very nice and fun, and really understands and cares about students. Take her class!!!
What a wonderful professor! She really cares about her students, and it shows by all the extra credit she gives! Makes class interesting and engaging, and the exams super easy! Although everyone did too well on them, so they may be harder next semester...
Lots of interesting stories to tell. Doesn't do much for the class, straight from book. Easy class!
This professor is a good lecturer. She at least makes the subject matter interesting but the tests are sort of tricky. She has a tendency to ask very picky questions and loves the "all/none of the aboves." Overall I had no problem with this professor and would recommend taking her for marketing.
If you want to hear an oral rendition of a marketing textbook, feel free to take this class.
She is not good enough to be teaching at UW-Madison. Class is worthless, you gain more from reading the textbook. They might as well eliminate this course from the requirements because you don't gain anything from her or this class.
She really knows her stuff and has some great experience working for some reputable companies. She teaches at both Madison and UW-Milwaukee, so she seemed rushed at times. You could easily just follow the syllabus and read the textbook and never go to class and still get an A. Tests aren't bad, but hard to get above 90s on. Final was difficult.
Don't waste your time going to lecture, just read the book. Dramatic difference in the grading of TA's, who give way different project and discussion scores (half the grade), and some give very thorough exam reviews and others give little. With a good TA, easy A. Suggest Rahul or Victor, not Dennis.
Lecture is pointless. Read the book and go to discussion and you'll do fine. Brachman has lots of industry experience, which makes the class a little more interesting. The curve is tough so really prepare for the tests. She always throws a few random questions on that you can't really prepare for. TA's grading varies a lot. Do the extra credit!!
Laurie is one of the worst teachers I have had at UW-Madison. As someone else mentions, her industry experience is great for stories, but her teaching methods are atrocious. She really does just read off the slides. TAs are radically different in what they teach and grade, so try and get a good one if possible! Not Erika, though!
Professor has good industry experience but that's about it. The exams were worded horribly. I couldn't get above a low B on any of the exams, yet my friends who never went to class could pull of A's. Several people seemed to be in the same boat, very frustrating. Don't think too much into exam questions, its probably more trivial then you think.
Haven't gone to class since late September. It's more useful to read the book carefully than attend lecture. Tests are harder than you would expect, but mostly because of wording and the like. Katie was a great TA.
if you take mkt 300 with brachman, dont even bother going to lecture. the book offers just as much as she does, if not more. on top of that this class has a very harsh curve and she doesn't round--a 91.99999 (yes, all 5 decimals) was still a B. she also refuses to accommodate you if you have another final exam at the same time as hers. avoid.
She's a fairly entertaining lecturer. The exams were harder than they needed to be, the group projects were pretty easy, and homework was a joke. I did very little for this class and got a B... but good luck if you want an A (Cut-off was a 95%). Get Rahul as your TA... he's a nice guy that grades pretty easily. Not a Laurie fan.
i read the book a million times for the test and still did bad! the curve sucks because everyone does well on the tests- and make sure you read the whole chpter, not just bullet points she says to read. she thinks shes funny but she is boring. the class needs to be more creative because its a marketing class!
Make sure you have a good group members for the project. Tests are tough. You can find some of the test questions on the internet if you are smart.
I never went to class past the first midterm but I spent alot of quality time with the book. I got an A (95% cutoff) but only because I can memorize just about anything, and trust me, you will need to memorize the book cover to cover.
I really enjoyed the class and the professor, I found her amusing and respectable, but the tests were way harder than I expected. It also didn't help that the curve is ridiculous! A 95 is an A. The group projects were a lot of work, so make sure to work on them consistently over the semester. Wish I did better, but overall still good.
First day of class she sounds like a total jerk but she gets a lot nicer throughout the semester. Uses a lot of real life examples during lecture.
Lecture's are not really necessary. First day you think she's going to be insanely mean, but she's just very straightfoward. Take the time to read the book and if you want to reinforce what you've read go to lecture. The curve makes things more difficult, but overall not a hard class.
My test grades went up considerably when I stopped going to lecture if that is any hint to you about what kind of professor Brachman is. Just read the textbook, lectures are completely useless. Terrible prof. IMO.
She constantly talks about her professional experiences, which makes her lectures easy to memorize. Lectures do match the book exactly, meaning that you really don't get anything from the lecture you won't get from the book. Got 100's on all quizzes, and aced every midterm and the project, but still got a B because of the stupid-high curve :P
Absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had. Extremely boring (I feel asleep every class) and the curve is extremely hard, you needed a 94.5 to get an A. Will not change grades, and when you try to speak to her she is rude and inconsiderate. Try to avoid this teacher at all costs!!!
I had Brachman for MKT 460, the capstone course. I walked away feeling like I had learned little. Obnoxious attitude and strange participation system combined for a confusing, difficult course. Every lecture is unconnected, based on random assortment of reading. Avoid if possible. A shame, because as a senior, this was my final impression of UW.
The questions on our two exams (one 100-point midterm, and one 200-point final) were poorly-worded. The prof encrypted elementary concepts, and barely covered some other, more complicated ones.
I had her over the summer for Marketing 300. She uses a lot of real world experiences and is interesting and engaging. Some people don't like her because she tells it like it is and sticks to her guns. She doesn't make grade exceptions just like the real world. Read the book, go to lecture. Not everything matches as others have suggested.
I thoroughly enjoyed her class. She keeps lecture very interesting through real world examples from her corporate experiences and recent video clips/examples. Lecture never drags on. She also assigned a project for a real client which helped us apply the marketing basics learned in lecture. Overall, great class for getting in the mkt mindset.
Worst professor I've ever had at the UW. She talks way too fast and she doesn't make sense when she talks. PowerPoint slides are awful and disorganized. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER
PowerPoint slides are monotonous and bubbles are overused. She effectively uses video examples every now and then which help. EXAMS ARE WORDY.
Worst professor I have ever had. Absolutely useless with questions. Multiple issues with grading system that students end up fixing by themselves. Also, never have I met a more condescending individual.
Worst Professor I've ever had at Madison. No point in going to lecture besides iClicker points... I learned absolutely nothing from her. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER.
Class is pointless, but you get participation points. I paid little attention and learned from the book. To study for tests I would suggest focusing on the vocab in depth and ten questions she gives. Do the extra credit.
I disagree with a lot of opinions on here. I really liked attending Laurie's lectures and thought she used great real world examples. However, the tests seemed like a bad measure of how much you know the material. They weren't terribly difficult, but not very straightforward. Discussion is pretty pointless.
Not recommended. If it wasn't for the fact she currently has a monopoly over being the only one teaching this required course, I'd go elsewhere. Gives full points on iClicker regardless (good). Lectures about her achievements. Rushes through PWPT every class (take notes with laptop). Has given hard assignments with little to no clarity or time.
Laurie is the worst professor that I have even seen in my whole life so far. She is super sassy and is irresponsive at all. She does not answer questions well and what she talked about in the class is not ever related to the technical knowledge in the textbook. The example that she used in the class will be in the exam, which ppl don't really care!
Lectures were very interesting--used a lot of examples to explain concepts BUT tests are ~70% from the textbook so definitely read or at least review. Class is based on a curve so I found the group projects were graded ridiculously hard. Weekly online homework was pointless but mandatory.
It's a shame that Laurie is many students' first exposure to marketing. Lectures are awful, she speeds through slides without any sort of coherent explanation. Acts much more like a comedienne than a lecturer, very sarcastic and flat-out rude. Homework is a waste of time, as are discussion sections (just hope you get a decent group). Good riddance.
Professor Brachman did a great job holding my interest during lectures! I looked forward to attending her lectures. She would pull real life examples of different marketing tactics and would break them down for us. Some lectures seemed more helpful than others, but I still had a good time in her class. Homework was a little tedious, but I managed.
Brachman isn't as bad as all of the reviews say. She's very intimidating and will input her experience into class during lecture, but you won't get tested on that. DO YOUR READINGS - 90% of the lecture and exam is based off the book, but she does add stuff in there. Honestly, discussion is where I lost points. Picky TA. First 2 big assignments key.
Laurie is much better than reviews would indicate. Her lectures are clear cut, easy to follow and interesting. Tests are fair. Reading the book is a large part of the class as much of the test questions come from it. Overall it's an interesting course that I would recommend with Professor Brachman.
I only went to lecture because of clicker points. I did not pay attention at all and just read the book and was fine for exams. A few hefty projects but overall a pretty good course and professor. She's a bit pretentious but it can be funny sometimes. Go in with an open mind.
Lectures are pointless besides clicker points, you have to go. Participation in discussion is mandatory too. Don't even try to take notes in lecture, review at home later. Do well on the PMP at the beginning of the year! Try hard on group project, it's easy by work. Read all of the textbook for tests, they aren't easy! Do extra credit! Tough curve.
Professor is not approachable and very rude. Loves the sound of her own voice. Makes classes attendance based because lecture is neither important nor interesting.
Marketing itself is not hard concepts, Laurie makes it awful. Questions on the test are poorly written and unclear- even if you studied you'll get some wrong purely due to her question formatting. Projects are graded hard and subjectively. Be ready for a lot of references about catscat food in lecture, and lecture is mandatory for tophat questions
Laurie uses a lot of personal experience in her lectures. This makes it more interesting to listen to, but she is just cocky about it. She is very full of herself and uses any experience as a chance to brag about her accomplishments. She purposely words the exam questions hard and the curve is set at a 95 for an A.
Worst professor ever. Spent lots of time and money learning absolutely nothing.
Marketing 300 is a major drag. Even as a marketing major, I found Laurie to be extremely annoying. She uses this app called TopHat for participation and the questions she asks can be quiet tricky. The exams aren't too bad but she does throw some random difficult questions. There is one major group project and a smaller project you do on your own.
This class can be challenging and the grading curve is hard, but I loved Laurie as a professor. She has a sarcastic sense of humor, which I found to be funny. Lectures are mandatory for participation because of Tophat and you do have to study for the exams and be able to apply concepts. Lots of real life examples in class and usage of short videos.
Her lectures seem very sporadic and general. Every time I was studying for an exam, everything seemed so simple and intuitive, but then she would have questions that you couldn't possibly prepare for because they were so poorly worded. I will say that I loved the group project and personal marketing project that we had to do. Not terrible, not good
Laurie is a very smart women, & I'm sure she was a great marketer. That said, she is a bad professor. She does TopHatClicker questions for points in lecture, otherwise I would've never gone. Her lectures and notes are very scattered. I did most of my learning out of the book. Tests should not be hard, but her questions are always worded horribly.
Very sporadic lecturer and she made her exams way harder than they needed to be for the content she covered.
Yes the professor presents a lot of information to learn, yes her tests are designed to trip people up, but it's taught well, and she is always happy to help you determine how you study better.
She's an okay professor. Lectures are very general, so make sure to read the textbook and take notes on the textbook. If you do this and study for the exam you will do fine on the exams. Curve in this class is absolutely horrible due to WSoB policy. A 93.5% was necessary to get an A (ridiculous). Group project was okay; read the rubric
Easy material, but lots of it, and the tests are written to trip you up. She makes them this way because of WSoB policy and needs to create a curve, without the hard tests everyone would have an A. Read the textbook, go to lecture, discussions are pretty useless for information but attendance is mandatory and all homeworkprojects are in discussion
Needed 455 points in her class for an AB, got 454. Make sure you triple check all your group and individ projects to her guidelines so you don't lose a couple extra points like I did, and you should be alright. The rest of the class was easy.
Not as bad as everyone says she is. Read the book for exams, lectures don't cover everything. Really look at rubric for group project PMP.
The subject matter of the class is common sense. Laurie sucked out all of the interest I had in marketing. Lecture is pointless but the clicker questions ensure that you go. You do NOT need the newest form of the textbook.
She means well, but grades too hard.
This class is supposed to be an interesting and common sense class but she just made it a torture. Her exam is absolutely tough and the words are really tricky. Her notes is a mess, full of pictures, absolutely not useful. If you want to get a good grade, just read the text book. However, even though you remember everything her exam is still tough.
Laurie's had a stranglehold on Marketing 300 for some time so it's hard to avoid her. Laurie is arrogant and she is completely unhelpful. Her tests were relatively simple if you study but the projects were graded unnecessarily hard. The curve makes it a hard A. Show up to class for the relatively easy top hat questions which just boosts your grade.
Lectures are very engaging with lots of videos and we got out early almost every day. If you go to lecture and do the readings the tests are pretty easy. However, the group project is not fun and the grading depends on your TA. You can easily get up to 8 extra credit points that are added in after the curve is set which will probably bump you up.
The exams are easy, but the group and individual projects are not. The grading is subjective based on your TA and whether they agree with your marketing strategy. Very frustrating class, but Laurie was entertaining.
Laurie has fun interactive lectures, but her test questions are very confusing. She likes to trip you up when she asks questions. Final exam was not a good representation of the over all course. She picks questions that were talked about very little in lecture
Reviews on here are way to aggressive. Laurie is not that bad and her tests are fair. There are a view questions that can trip you, but for the most part if you do the readings and attend lecture you will be totally fine! You can tell she has a true passion for marketing and her rating on here is way worse than it needs to be! Don't worry its fine!
Laurie's lectures were fine, but the grading for this class really didn't depend on how you actually did. They have to curve to an 85, so even if you do really well on a project, you probably won't ever get over a 90. The group project was stressful and time consuming. I read every page of the textbook and ended with an AB.
I really enjoyed this class. Laurie made lectures entertaining and the material fun to learn. If I could take another class with her, I would.
She's a little scary the first day, but she's really very nice. Lectures are great. Exams are very fair (easy) if you've paid attention (take notes) and read the book (notes here, too). Do the reading before lecture! It really helps. Group project can be a pain, and the grading isn't fun, but the 8 EC points do help a lot. Very competitive class.
Laurie was a fun and engaging professor, I enjoyed going to class. The material isn't hard, but you have to completely understand each concept, which is easy with all of the examples provided. As everyone says, there were two projects, with the group one being the most demanding of the two. Make sure to use the professor and the TA's, like I did!
I am a marketing major and have taken several classes since this, and Laurie's class is the only class I received under an AB. She is a tenured professor with outdated teaching methods. It is just unfortunate that this is how some kids are first exposed to marketing. She is a arrogant when teaching and it is unfortunate portrayal of WSOB.
Like marketing, but HATE her class. Not a helpful and kind prof. Lecture notes were not helpful for reviewing, literally you have to read EVERY word on textbook. She always considers herself first so if you have conflicts on exam or anything, she wont do anything. Her words:"Talk to your other prof and make them rearrange".
The group projects were annoying but the class was doable. She taught interestingly enough to keep my attention.
At least skim reading, go to class, do the extra credit, and don't slack on the projects and you'll be fine. Really an easy class IMO. I got A's on the exams and my individual projects, with mediocre-decent grades on the other various large ticket items and got an A in the class. Lectures are boring and her notes are useless.
Laurie's course was fairly graded, however I wish she awarded more A's because less than 10% of the class received one after the curve. Her lectures were helpful but not necessary other than answering Top Hat questions. If you read the textbook and understood the concepts, the exams were manageable. Overall, I was very satisfied with this course.
Not explaining what she wants to be known and the exams have to do with the lectures. They are not organised well and if you want a good grade you need to read everything from the book.
I had a bad view on marketing until I took this class. Don't get me wrong, I still don't really like it but Brachman at least made some of it interesting for me during lecture. Lecture is basically mandatory (you need to get a 65% on top hat for credit). The textbook is really only useful for learning vocal for exams.
She is unfairly criticized for the grading criteria mandated for all 300 level classes in the business school. She is clearly very knowledgeable and wants her students to succeed. Majority of the grade is based on 2 projects, and midterms and a final that were very fair. Read the textbook before class and know the in-class examples.
Dr. Brachman is a very interesting lecturer. I can see why she gets harsher reviews, because she can be a bit stern. She is very no nonsense, but she knows her stuff. She has a lot of interesting stories from her marketing days which she brings out in lecture often.
Laurie gets a bad rep on here and its not accurate. Laurie knows everything and anything about marketing, current, future or past. The class is super structured which is very nice, but your grade depends on your TA grading of your projects. Follow the rubric closely and try to stand out. Very competitive class, but lectures go by fast with videos
Lectures are useless, boring and nonsensical. No one respects Laurie's professional experience or opinion. Really poor choice by UW's Marketing Dept. as a lead for this course.
I agree with most of the reviews. I think it was super common for people to get a B in this class. Grade depends a lot on TA. The tests seem crafted for students to get around 85%. Every point you lose hurts a lot so do all the extra credit. I can't really tell if I like Laurie. Her videos were good, jokes were bad. Seemed like she had experience
Laurie is an exceptional lecturer. She is undoubtedly intelligent and well-rounded, always has interesting and relevant examples, and a true expert in the marketing field. She cares about students' grades, but wants to challenge students. The class is hard, but for MKT 300 she has to adhere to a curve set by the WSB. Top 5 WSB classes I've taken.
Laurie is treated very unfairly and I think is misunderstood. She cares about her students and can't give out all As because of Business School policies. She's super smart in her field (and overall) and her lectures are actually really interesting. Great prof!
I loved this class & loved Laurie. I really appreciated her straight-forward & clear directions to what she expected of us as students. I think people make this class out to be harder than it is. Definitely do the readings. I got B's on all the exams, an AB on the first project, & an A on the final project and ended up with an AB in the class.
Uses lectures to really apply the concepts found in the book, which is helpful but LOOOOOOVES to hear herself talk. none of my class notes were usable for studying because she goes on random tangents with personal anecdotes that you won't get tested on.
Best professor I have had. She is organized passionate and funny. Class is easy but is required to curve to a B but she does extra credit after the curve to help you out which is nice.
One of the best professors i've had. Lectures were interesting and she's passionate about her field. Her expectations were clearly. While there's more group work than I would normally prefer, she made it easy as her rubrics will guide you through the assignment. Follow the rubric for projects, read the text, and attend lectures and you'll be fine
Laurie is a gem who low-key has some great jokes. No one will laugh but you'll silently appreciate them and her effort. Her class isn't too bad depending on your TA. Make sure to take the PMP and group projects seriously. Pay attention and be on top of things.
Curved class, so hard to get an A. Lectures are cool since you watch at ton of videos. Get a TA that grades easy, it will save your grade. Rashi was a chill TA
Make sure you get a good TA, since group projects are a big chunk of your grade. Rashi was an awesome TA, and very approachable. Lectures are interesting but not as useful as the textbook. You won't pass if you don't read. Take the assigned readings seriously
Laurie is a professor who does not make time for her students. She has office hours but gets grumpy if you attend. Last time I went she said, "What do you want?" If you don't read every single word in the book, you're going to have a tough time with the exam. I love marketing but was very disappointed by the lack of compassion from this woman.
Laurie's lectures are interesting and she uses relevant examples to help demonstrate the material/readings. The exams are kind of heavily based on the readings, which, there are a lot of. There are also major group projects (worth a lot so watch out) but there are plenty of extra credit opportunities and the points are applied after the curve.
Good teacher but challenging class.
Laurie is a great professor who makes it easy to relate content to the real world with her examples from her previous jobs. She makes class fun to attend and plays lots of videos and ads to help you understand her concepts. Only complaint is that the final is worth so much more than the other exams, i.e. midterm is 13% of grade and the final 33%.
Laurie was an interesting lecturer but definitely read the book. I got an 80-84 on the first two midterms, an 88 on the PMP, 95 on the group project and a 93 on the final and somehow ended up with an A (93%). Read the book and study hard for the final it's worth a ton and can make or break your grade. Also, do the appeals if you think it's unfair
Laurie is really personable and makes an effort to make marketing relevant to everyone, regardless of major. We had 2 midterms and 1 final, in addition to 1 large group project and 1 individual project. The best way to study for exams is from the textbook and notes she posts. You don't need to go to lecture, but the examples given are helpful.
I think Laurie did a great job with the pilot of this 4 week summer course. Everything was extremely organized and easy to understand. She lays out the entire class from week one which is very helpful. In this session you will need to spend 30-35 hours a week doing stuff but it is very doable.
Her classes go in accordance to the book and it is important to read the book to do well in her class. She has a lot of experience in marketing and uses this to explain concepts better and ensures that her content that she shows to class is up to date.
Honestly a pretty tough class, but doable. Study hard and make sure you understand how to apply the concepts that you read in the textbook. 3 exams and 1 project. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. After the curve, these points brought me from an AB to an A
Prof. Brachman made lectures fairly interesting / engaging with videos and TopHat. The majority of the class is graded on tests and a project, personal marketing plan. The project took place over a long period of time and was long and tedious, but not all that hard. Tests seemed like they were meant to trick students. Don't need to read to get an A
Material is useless but easy A.
I definitely recommend taking MKT300, great class, very doable and interesting with Brachman!
Lectures can be bland and it's hard to take notes. Posts the lectures online which is nice if you feel like skipping sometime. However, there are TopHat questions so it kind of forces you to go to lecture. Exams weren't the easiest. Seems like she makes you pick the least wrong answer, not the most right. More trick questions than necessary.
Laurie is an amazing professor that clearly loves what she's teaching. If you go to lectures and do the readings you shouldn't have a hard time getting a good grade. I put in very minimal effort and got a BC.
Really good professor who knows what she is talking about and has a lot of real world experience. I really enjoyed this class.
Brachman is a great lecturer because she has tons of real life experience. She uses TopHat for lecture attendance so you gotta go, but you should anyways because she makes note of important things. She makes it clear what do study and the exams are fair you just need to know the material and apply it. Multiple chances for EC applied to your exam
I think the harsh ratings here are inaccurate! Laurie is a fantastic professor with TONS of real-world knowledge and you can tell how passionate she is about the content. She is warm, engaging and subtly sarcastic, which keeps lectures fun. Do the readings and make sure you can explain topics to yourself/others -- don't just memorize for exams!
I have no problem with Laurie, she knows her stuff no doubt, but the course material is outlandishly easy. You really don't learn anything new. Super easy A, but in a way where you don't learn anything. Also she plays a ton of YouTube videos, not a great use of tuition dollars
Laurie is a great professor who knows her stuff. Her lectures are interesting and involve lots of fun videos. Lectures are easy to sit through. Some of the material can be tough, but overall a great class.
Her canvas page is kind of confusing to navigate, she puts all the info for a week under one module so it's easy to miss things. She also takes tophat attendance, & if your phone knows you aren't in the room trying to get attendance points you lose all of your participation grade. Pretty easy though, show up and there isn't much out of class to do
This class has potential to be enjoyable and easy, but the material is over complicated and the exam are not fair at all. The wording on exams is very misleading and questions are ambiguous. Overall the class is decent and you can get an A if you truly study a lot and I am a lot.
Professor Brachman was very monotone in her lecture videos and it seemed as though she did not put any effort in. You know there is a problem when her pre-recorded lecture videos seemed older than the textbook. This class as a whole seemed more tedious and worried about promoting a curve than caring for the learning of the students.
For some reason, she thinks not letting you see the answers to your quizzes a good idea. She tries to make the simplest topic (marketing) into the most complicated thing by being very vague on grading feedback. She contradicts herself by saying focus on application and not definition based and then fills the exams with definition based questions.
Frankly rude professor, with a bad attitude. Regularly passive aggressive towards not just individual students, but the whole class. As a marketing major, professor made me doubt my decision to enter this field. Arbitrary grading, never provides exam guidance. Poor professor, believe she should not be instructing or representing this university.
Laurie seems nice, but her online lectures did not provide a lot of content or explanations. The slides she provides are pretty useless. Exam questions are very misleading and ambiguous. She also does not let you go back to questions you already answered during the exam which is bs. Seems like the class may be better in person
I thought this class would be interesting, and it's really not. About 80% of the work for this class is busy work and they needlessly make things more complicated by having you work in"groups". It's almost impossible to get 100% in participation. There's one big project and it's so dumb. Honestly this class is a waste of time.
This professor is terrible and the least understanding and considerate professor I have ever had. I am so sorry anyone has to take her class. She makes her class impossible yet the material is quite simple. Frankly she ruined marketing for me.
I actually changed my major because of this course. The material itself is not hard at all but the professor sets you up to fail. She makes the exams to trick you rather than to test your actual knowledge. She told our class we should be happy we even got to use a page of notes on the exam not even considering that were in a national pandemic.
The course content has the potential to be super interesting, and at times it was. Sadly, if you ever find yourself taking Laurie's class get ready for vague assignments, projects, and exam questions. Discussions, which could've been a great opportunity for students to connect with the material, ended up being a fight for participation points.
Laurie was very clear about assignments and expectations on Canvas. Plenty of Extra Credit points to help keep your grade at an A. Turn in assignments on time, understand lecture/textbook concepts, and prepare a day or two in advance for exams and you won't have a problem getting an A.
Laurie's lectures are fine. There were so many lectures this week that it often became overwhelming. The course page was formatted in a way that made it even more overwhelming. You need to read the book to get the main concepts for the class, the lectures were not too helpful. Material isn't that difficult, so the tests were made difficult to comp.
Lots of reading, quizzes every few weeks, group project work most weeks writing out concepts from book and coming up with 2 "test" questions. Found exams to be so hard. Easy material but so much reading it was hard to prepare for exams. Very clear class layout, class graded on curve. Really liked project making elevator pitch worth a lot of points
Class is demanding but also somewhat vague, making for a weird experience. She knows a lot but her lectures can get boring. Exam and quiz questions are oddly worded but not crazy difficult. There's a good amount of group work that is graded semi-harshly but the final video project isn't as bad as it looks. Hard to get an A but an AB is attainable.
This class was unbelievably straightforward. If you read the textbook and watch the lecture videos, you will do well in this class. There are a lot of homework assignments that you get points for just completing. Also lots of extra credit opportunities.
The textbook chapters were SO long, and there were often multiple assigned a week. The video lectures were also pretty dry, and the way that the class is graded is sort of confusing but it isn't hard to get an A. Just one project throughout the semester but lots of graded group work. Exams are vague/trickily worded. Multiple EC opportunities.
I feel like this would have been better pre-Covid. Lectures online are a bit boring and tedious. The directions on assignments are vague. There's a lot of extra credit. Overall, I thought it was pretty easy and doable. There was a lot of busy work though.
The content in this class is relatively easy, it's just the tests that are hard. The lectures are actually very informative and easy to keep up with, a lot more than the textbook. The project is very annoying and grading isn't clear, a lot of is taught by your TA. Best to ask as much questions as you can.
A lot of the content is book based, so you HAVE to read if you want to have an easier time in class. The content is not hard, pretty logical. Didn't study much at all and did well on the exams. The PMP project is stupid but it's still not that hard. I took it online and it saved me a lot of time rather than scheduled lectures.
Professor Brachman is very passionate about what she teaches and shares a lot of real-life experiences when teaching. Her lectures are engaging and very helpful to student learning. This course is material dense and concept heavy, and be prepared for the exams because they are almost all application questions. Pay attention and read the textbook!
Good professor. Fell asleep in most lectures, but Laurie does a great job keeping them short. She has a lot of personal stories which keeps the class somewhat engaging. Textbook, quizzes, exams were all online and we were able to use 1 page of notes for quizzes and exams.
Laurie Brachman has been one of the most engaging and passionate professors I've had at UW-Madison. She cares so much about marketing and it clearly shows in her lectures. The material itself is not hard, but you should definitely attend the lecture seeing as how most of the exams are related to what Laurie discusses.
Pretty easy class. Read the book but skim for ideas because the chapters are so long and full of fluff. You get 1 page of notes on exams. Do the extra credit. I was 5 points below an A but the EC bumped me. Exam questions are ambiguous at times but I went with my gut and got low 90s. Do every assignment as final curve is tight. Lectures are useless
Laurie herself is really great; she's clearly passionate about marketing and gave lots of examples from her own career experience to help us understand the material. I went to all the lectures, but if you want to skip them just make sure to read the book. I thought the content was pretty common-sense stuff, so the class was pretty easy.
Laurie is very passionate about marketing but that is good for this class. The textbook readings were easy, I only read the bolded words and summaries on the side of every page. Lots of EC opportunities and EC is applied after the curve. Overall, I am not super interested in marketing but Laurie made it enjoyable and the class is not very difficult
Laurie is very clear with everything you need to know about the class structure, content, and scheduling. Interesting lectures, I learned a lot and loved how she provided examples for all the concepts we learned. This class is a nice and easy one to take with Accounting or Gen Bus. Low stress and enjoyable.
Laurie is a very kind lady, however she makes extremely difficult exams and quizzes. Questions are often ambiguous and can be. justified with multiple answers. The only answer that matters is the one in her head and if u can't think of that then you are wrong. Especially hurts you on those 50/50 questions. Definitely takes more thinking than u thin
Laurie was super nice and you can tell she has experience and knows what she's talking about. Her lectures give real examples that you can apply to concepts. Discussion gets split up into groups that you're with the whole semester, and the TA team seemed very knowledgeable as well.
Very nice and funny woman. Everything was graded by the TA other than the exams. Lectures were mostly fun to attend if a little boring at times. The semester-long project wasn't too hard and will actually help me in real life. Not sure why she has such a bad rep!
I think Laurie is a good professor - not great, not average, but good. I didn't really care about marketing, and still don't, but the material was interesting and not too hard. She has a lot of experience in the field and lecture was enjoyable.
Laurie sometimes has a great sense of humor, and then I think about how she doesn't let you go back and check your answers on exams. I just felt like the lectures did not help, as she would constantly say, "well...I can see it being that as well" regarding certain tophat questions. She would not give any prep questions other than that.
Easy course to take online. She posts lecture videos that are pretty short. Exams and quizzes are easy if you watch the videos. I never did the reading, but it would help if you are struggling. Offers a decent amount of extra credit. Some group work, each assignment takes like 15 minutes. Decent class and I mainly interacted with my TA.
For some god forsaken reason you are not allowed to go back to previous questions and change your answer. Throughout the whole semester, she was too worried about people cheating on her precious exams that she forgot to actually teach us the information we needed to know.
Laurie is a passionate instructor and a great lecturer. That said, lectures often deviate from textbook content. The yearlong project is annoying but not too difficult. Lots of reading, but at least it is interesting. Some of the test questions are ambiguous and unclear. Do the extra credit. Only have to show up to 5 discussions to get full points.
Laurie Brachman was the worst professor I've ever had in my college multi-year college experience. She did not teach concepts in the lectures. She rambled on and on about random examples without actually teaching us the underlying concepts. She was also the most arrogant instructor I've ever seen. Nobody alive is more full of themself than Laurie
This class was easy as the test questions were common sense based. Since we got notes, get the definitions from the textbook but don't waste time reading it. Lectures are somewhat helpful but not the most interesting. Not much time is needed for studying in my opinion. Just understand the definitions on your notes. Do the extra credit as its easy.
Lauri is so full of herself I think if she could she would marry herself she would. She believes herself to be the smartest marketer ever, however given she is a professor instead of a CO at a company, I think she is simply using her students to fund her consulting work.
Professor Brachman loves to overcomplicate the simplest concepts. The wording on her exams confuse me more than the actual concepts themselves which is completely inappropriate and unfair. Nothing is taught in lecture. She does not allow you to go back to previous questions on quizzes or exams, which hinders most students ability to perform well.
Great professor, just attend lectures and be engaged - you'll manage within this class
Lectures are a waste of time, but you have to go because she uses Tophat questions in lecture as part of your grade. She rambles about random examples without actually explaining the concepts. Good luck trying to take notes if you don't use the stupid handouts she wants you to print, because she skips over the slides with actual information
I have never seen a Canvas page as poorly managed as hers. It's usable, but very clunky. Brachman teaches about 20% of what is actually in the exams, the rest of lecture is spent rambling about common sense items. She has TAs of various majors that don't know how to answer questions. Zero lenience on PMP, don't count on appealing your grade.
A terrible class, paired with useless lectures. None of the lectures remotely helped with the trillions of terms we needed to know for exams. This class is useless to society. She rambles on and on about the most common-sense topics, while skipping over slides that have the useful information. Canvas page sucks. Can't say it's a hard class though.
Laurie was a great professor. Her lectures were genuinely entertaining and the content was fairly easy. You get a notecard on the exams. The discussions seemed kind of useless to me but the lectures were helpful and there are lots of extra credit opportunities.
Decent teacher. lectures are based off slide on canvas, but you "should" go because of top-hat. Test and PMP aren't super difficult, but you will lose points because her questions/directions are written poorly. 94% was an A, didn't put in a ton of effort and got high AB. Overall, decent teacher and course.
Take Marketing 300 with Laurie Brachman if you would like to have a horrific experience. She graded the major project extremely harshly and simply does not teach concepts well in lecture. Exam questions are MUCH more difficult than what we learn in class and from the textbook. Not on the same level. She just does not prepare us for the exams at all
Laurie is such a bad lecturer it isn't even funny. She just rambles on about irrelevant topics and it is so boring. Class is super easy, exams not difficult and hardly found myself doing work outside of class. Graciously gives extra credit though, and a lot of it. Get ready to be bored to sleep. Mandatory attendance due to tophat questions.
Worst professor ever in business school. Completely old school like her age. Inaccessible asks to contact TA first. Not enough review materials for exams and then asks practical exam questions never seen before. Never opens practice questions and weekly quizzes. Never taking her class again
Subjective test questions. 20/30 test questions are fair. 10/30 test questions are subjective and can be argued. She won't budge. She's teaching and out of the business world for a reason.
She publicly scrutinizes students who leave early, whose phones go off, and people who encounter technical difficulties. The exams were difficult for students who actively engaged, read the book, and studied. Although there are rubrics, students are graded unfairly! SUPER confrontational, Unwilling to compensate by any means
She's a fine professor, but can be a bit unnecessarily mean to students who talk or whose phones go off. You can't go back and review quiz/test answers after answering them to "prevent cheating" which makes zero sense.
Class isn't that hard, just make sure to know all the key concepts and terms. The exams are worded incredibly poorly with typos everywhere. Lectures don't give you much help. The answers on exams are mostly subjective. Cheating is overemphasized and does more harm than good. Don't really see the point of PMP as its graded harshly.
Laurie enjoys talking about herself more than she does teaching. Lectures are mandatory, which is unfortunate because she says nothing of value. Test questions are subjective and also have poor wording + typos. The PMP (pointless marketing project) is completely unrelated to almost any content from the class.
Class is not difficult, but the exams were subjective and there were a lot of questions that could have been argued. Laurie was pretty rude in class and seemed to be on edge. Lectures are pointless, but attendance is mandatory because of tophat. Everything is honorlocked (yes, the ungraded practice and extra credit). Plenty of extra credit...
Tbh Laurie was fine but I wouldn't take her if you can take another easier prof. Her lectures are honestly kind of interesting sometimes but her exams and quizzes suck and are made up of the most random questions which makes them hard to study for. The PMP is so easy so get a good grade on that (I basically got an 100%) and do all the extra credit.
Her lectures are interesting if you pay attention and honestly not dull. Recommend reading the book since she bases all the material off of it. She takes basic concepts and makes them overly complicated with tricky wording on exams and quizzes.
This course is an introduction to marketing and takes straightforward basic concepts, makes them over-complicated on exams, and uses a lot of application on the exams. A fair amount of extra credit is offered, and it can raise your grade by a letter. Laurie had very engaging lectures using a lot of her real-world examples which was super engaging.
Lectures were engaging because Laurie uses a lot of real-world examples instead of just reading off her notes! If you are interested in marketing, you will enjoy the lectures and discussions, but if not, it might be a very boring but easily-managable course. Three exams, and one project (helpful and easy but boring). Honorlock + TopHat heavy.
Her lectures are interesting yet very fast paced. Extra credit is very helpful. Material is not difficult, but some exam questions are difficult to comprehend.
Gives out a lot of extra credit, makes it apparent to not cheat and posts lectures online if you miss. Really hard to get an A like most 300s. Study for the quizzes and exams you will be fine.
Laurie was nice, but her class is disorganized and time-consuming bc there are so many assignments and posts due that it's hard to follow along. Attendance is mandatory in discussion and lecture. Three exams, quizzes and there is one major project that has confusing directions.
Seems to have a god complex
She is genuinely a nice person, but her lectures can get confusing. I like that she utilizes real-life examples to make lectures interesting. However, the three exams and many quizzes are challenging and difficult. The project is long and boring.
Laurie's lectures can be engaging, but the exams and quizzes are quite challenging. The project is time-consuming, but extra credit opportunities are helpful. Overall, it's a tough class, but using unstuck AI and the textbook can make it more manageable.
