This was my favorite class in all my classes at ElCo. She is only part time, and does not teach this specific class right now. However she is very very nice and professional, great teacher.
Excellent teacher.

Execellent professor, is really helpful, and understanding.
Her lectures are SO boring (whiny voice too). Has 3 tests and 3 debates. Her tests are medium difficulty, sort of tricky and worded weird. She expects you to read but no one ever does. Strict grader on papers too, and often vague about her expectations.
I didnt like her, way to boring.
She was very to the point, which is good. She is a formal speaker--but its nice for a change. Her essay tests are easier than m/c. so take those. I liked her.
I really don't like Political Science, but she mad this class bearable, and is very nice.
Good teacher but damn her tests are hard. Class is interesting but at times can get boring.
She is very boring, whiney, and wrong about alot of social issues. She is your typical whiney closet republican. Her tests suck, and the debates are a joke.
I have to say that there is nothing too exciting about this professor. She is somewhat bland but she does open the class up for discussion. I got an A in a three hour night class so if you work hard and do the reading you will be fine. There are quizzes, in-class midterm and final, and a paper.
BORING!! unclear and bad lectures, doesn't really get you engaged in the subject. just boring
She lectures all of class but keeps your interest and doesnt bore you. Her tests arent that easy, but if you pay attention to her lectures, you will have no problem doing well
She is still finding her rhythm and could be a bit more energetic and engaging, but shes improving. She is very knowledgeable and her classes are dirt easy if you pay attention. Speak up and ask her questions - all her top students were the ones who spoke in class.
She is soo pretty. prettiest at El Co! heh.. cute too.. perky. besides that, she explains too deeply. it's like she's teaching elementary kids.when she covers a subject, she covers it real deep which is very helpful for slow learners. recommend her for ya'll~~
She's sooo conservatively biased and totally arbitrary. Her grading schemes make absolutely no sense. Point totals didn't add up and somehow 2 Bs + C came out to be an A (not that I'm complaining). Liberals be prepared to tear your hair out. TAKE WHAT SHE "TEACHES" WITH A GRAIN OF SALT!
Great teacher. Just take good notes, attend class and you'll do fine. She even gives a fair amount of extra credit if you need it. Very patient with students and truly clarifies topics in her lectures. Take the essay version of the exams especially if you're a decent writer. I highly recommend her.
dude, for those who say she's a bad teacher have issues. fact is that she lectures the whole class but she keeps it interesting so you dont fall asleep. another fact is that you take notes, then your good cus she even gives out a sheet of what you should know for the test. i recommend her
I really enjoyed both of her classes a lot. I did not think that she was constervative in the least, infact my guess would have been that she is liberal. I learned new things in her class, and with all college classes its up to you to do the work not the professor.
She has no patience with students who do not understand the problems.
Took her for PS1 & really liked her. She does talk the whole class, but if you take notes and go to class, you'll do fine. She also grades somewhat easy & offers a lot of extra credit.
her voice can become really grating, especially after a long day. real laid-back class, open discussion can be fun, although things go too far when she just lets it go on and on. i want to learn from a professor in an undergrad class, not some student yammering on and on. grades are sparse so you can't afford to **** up any one assignment.
Good teacher; cares for students; reasonable; highly educated.
wow. this is one of the most boring classes you can ever take. she seriously talks forever, and loves the sound of her own voice. goes over the same thing over&over again. even if shes done talkin about a subject. she still keeps going. DONT RECOMMEND. save urself. her voice is GRATING!
Very clear and helpful. Very easy class if you do the work and study. Very organzied and gives you a study guide way ahead of time. Highly reccomend her
easy class..do the extra credit, study a little for the tests and go to class..simple as that..she may be boring in her lectures, but the A is worth it isnt it?
She is boring seriuosly, her lectures have nothing really to do with the test. She puts you to sleep-very monotoned. Her class discussions have no point. The good thing is she gives you a study guide. Her test are worded not the way it looks on the test.Take notes and beware!!!!!!!!
She is so Kool. Just take good notes and listen during discussions and you'll have an A. She can be funny sometimes, but most of the time just good to look at! made things very easy with extra credits and after class help. take her!
Very easy class to pass, gives you study guides weeks in advance of the tests, sometimes grades on a curve, a lot of xtra credit, she does talk a lot but lectures are very interesting, very nice teacher, and not to forget to mention very hot too!! I would highly recommend her class!
I loved her! She is interesting even though she lectures and she shows videos to reinforce and she is always willing to help you. Not hard if you take notes and study. Great teacher!
Prof. Houske is very nice, though a little unclear in her demands at times. There are only four projects in this class, so you need to be careful with each one, but there is a lot of extra credit. Encourages discussion, so it's good if you have at least some interest in the subject.
This class is not that hard, 2 papers, 2 tests. she offers some extra cred. BUT her lectures are not very organized, and she hardly uses the book.. uses "um" after every other word.. very distracting. i didn't like it much, but its manageable
Well, i think shes a good teacher. She lectures a lot, however, she gives extra credit to pull your grade up. The tests are challenging in the sense that the vocabulary tends to make the questions tricky. If you need any questions you can go up and ask her during her office hours... Regarding looks, some guys think shes hot lol i think shes alright
she's s really interesting professor with a good sense of humor and loves politics. her lecture can be a little boring but if you good notes and follow in the bokk you'll do alright on tests. she's also cute and has a nice ass but that proved to be a little distracting for me
very easy class, she's not that hot but definatly and easy grader...it's not that bad if you miss a few classes, a must take class
she's very helpful. if you think you're failing her class, just ask 4 sum xtra credit work. dat shuld bring u up. her lectures r kinda borin and not much of it comes from the book. she doesnt realli care if u miss classes. she also gives outlines of whats gonna b on the test so take her! u wont regret it
She says "um" all the time and it drove me nuts. She expects u 2 know more then I think ud normally do going into her class. Meaning she goes off on politics and doesn't explain the basics before she goes into the hard stuff. She is really nice though and helpful. I dropped. but my friends did well and I guess she is not a very hard grader.
Very opinionated, I hope you don't have a different opinion than her because she is ALWAYS right!
I've never taken this instructor before but I have met her. She loves talking w/ me and she is always bearing a bright smile when I walk into her office. My friend currently is her student and she is liking her so far. She seems like a nice teacher.
Although never taken her before, I would recommend her. Gave myself over a month to decide and later I found out that I the class never fits. I would tell my friend to take her if they ever plan ot take Government, like Political Science. She's way cuter than you'll ever expect. Also, she is really pretty!
Professor Houske is a great teacher. She is neutral in her presentation, encourages open discussion and is clear with her assignments and evaluations. There are a lot of chances for extra credit, and she is overall a very nice teacher. I certainly recommend her as a teacher.
she is a great teacher very nice and easy to approch. Her test are a little hard but if you study you can get through it. Gives out lots of extra credit so if you don't do well on the test you can make up for it doing the e.c. Her lectures are intesting take it from me not that really into politics, but i enjoyed it and makes me want to learn more.
She's a very good speaker, and makes the subject as interesting as possible (for me). For those of you who don't like politics, this class is not fun, but you have to take it sometime, so you might as well take it with Houske. DON'T BUY THE BOOK. I never used mine and it was expensive.
Don't take this class if you are not interested in politics. I wouldn't really recommend her class even if you are interested in poli. Her lectures were endless and monotone. She's like a robot.
self-righteous and keeps you to the MINUTE
Nice lady, but she speaks as if u were supposed 2 have taken another poli sci class...I never have and the material was very hard for me. She does NOT offer a lot of xtra credit, her tests are all essay. Her voice gets annoying "aahhhhm" is her fav word. I dropped the class bec what she wanted for the test was waaay 2 much 2 comprehend.
She's one of the cool teachers who has a cute appearance with a bright smile! Her bright smile makes her look much cuter. I love to talk to her.

She is a great teacher. Knows what she is talking about and is very willing to help, also almost anything is extra credit. Class is not that hard... but I am a political science major so I am very biased. But good teacher!
Her lectures are borring and she sometimes gets too into details on useless stuff. Her tests were hard to me. There are random questions. Though she gives test reviews it is very vague. She doesn't use the book at all, all her tests are on her lectures.
Great text book...lectures not so much. Shes fun at times as long as you take three shots of esspresso before class (she can be boring). Dont take this class if you cant write an essay. All her tests are essays, two papers, grades fair. Not a good class to take if your not interested in the subject
first time taking a PS class and found it quite interesting. she wasn't too harsh with grading the essays and allows a lot of extra credit which allowed me to get an A in the class. cute appearance and can be funny at times. overall, i liked her class and would recommend. unless you hate writing essays and the subject....
She is a young teacher. Her tests are all essay format and are straight from her lectures. Her lectures are boring and sometimes she starts talking about things that have no relevance to the class. I do not recommend this class.
Professor Houske is an excellent instructor. She exudes knowledge and expertise in her field. Granted if your not into politics the subject can be a little bland at times. Exams are all essay, you're expected to know the material. She's excellent. That is if your undergrad material. She's the reason why I changed my major to Political Science.
She's smart and the class was pretty interesting but it seemed like she did't like being asked questions.... She's not to helpful and the tests were ok, just the essay tests were hard... She gave us the option to do one or the other... gave us some extra credit.
Prof Houske is a lot easier than she seems. I was suprised to get an A and I guess regular attendance and question asking goes a long way in her class. Very straightfoward class with no surprises. Quizes and tests and one group presentation, but nothing too bad. Very interesting if you are into world events and pretty cool book too. Very cool class
EASY. Almost no homework. If you need a breeze class this is the teach. Nice also.
prof. houske is very good at her job. she's very knowledgable and very flexible. she'll even let you make up a test at the end of the semester. considering she only gives two papers and two tests in poli3 it might be worth taking.
Doesn't let you know your grade or how your doing in the class till it's too late.Doesn't do everything she says in the syallbus.Offers no help out of class (I learned more going to the PoliSci tutor a few times than i did in a whole semester with her).Rarely ever gives handouts or writes on the board.Doesn't care about students at all. DON'T TAKE!
Professor Husky class is based on her lectures; you won’t get much information from the book if you are looking to do well on the exams. But basically her lectures are clear; she brakes down everything in apples and oranges. The only obstacle in the class is figuring out what is going to be in the exams. Before the exam she gives an overview of all
PREVIOUS POLI SCI 2 STUDENTS: WHAT IS IT THAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO PICK UP FROM HER LECTURES? IM SO CONFUSED...SHE JUST SAT DOWN AND TALKED...TALKED...AND TALKED...NOTHING ON THE BOARD...WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW? HER LECTURE WAS JUST MORE OF A DISCUSSION WITH THE CLASS...
She totally made me want to change majors. I am a visual learner, and I can't learn with the way she teaches; She sits down and asks the class questions...She is also hard...her test are based on lectures...but she doesn't really lecture...
Just dont! She doesn't go by the book and uh you dont know what the she's talkin about!DONT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OR work you but off like its a 4 unit class trying to figure out what ur supposed to study
Her class is very interesting, she gives really good lectures but for you 2 score a really good grade on the essay test its adviceable 2 use the textbook 2 get in details! she is very helpful and is not strict at all in attendance!
I love professors like this. Not strict on attendance at all, but only gives lectures and notes once. So either make it to class or make buddies in the class. Very limited board writing, but basically there is four theories in this class you need to know. You know that and read some of the book, you can get an A.
She's hard, I agree with the other comments. ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE LAZY! However, put in some effort and you'll do fine. I did. I got an A. Even though I felt like I wasn't doing well, I did. 2 tests, completely essay format. Couple of quizzes. One group project, but your grade is based on how you did, not on how the group did. Overall I enjoyed it!
Only teacher that teaches this subject so everyone, YOU'RE SCREWED! Nice lady but unacceptable teacher. She lectures in an odd jump-around fashion and then gets aggravated when you don't know what she's talking about. She is extremely unclear as to what she expects on the midterm which is a third of your grade. GOOD LUCK POLI SCI MAJORS
I took her Online class, and thought this was going to be quite interesting. All she does is post things for us to do for that week, and that's it. She takes forever to get back to e-mails, but doesn't have deadlines for exams due. Overall not a very helpful teacher. Still got an A.
I have taken 5 online courses and by far hers was the worst. She does not make herself available to the students and she takes a very long time to respond. My test was graded incorrectly, something I pointed out to her and she never changed it. Find another teacher for poli sci 1
Everyone is right she is much of teacher. If you're not willing to just do the work independently than forget it. I worked together with a classmate to get the grade. Make sure your read or skip to another teacher for online poli sci.
DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE CLASS.. She never responds to questions. Does not contribute to discussions and general. I question if she actualy reads our papers.
She is very biased in class discussions. Will only give feedback to those who agree with her.
she's all over the place with her lectures. save yourself the money and don't buy the book. record her lectures, i got an a but i studied my ass off. lots of random theories, she's not into personal relationships with students, no sense of humor, strictly business
tests are only based on lectures. do not buy the book, it's pointless and expensive. there's only a midterm and a final(both require writing 2 essays). her lectures are quite boring and confusing. she jumps all over the place. write down everything she says and study this and you'll get an A.
I don't even really know how to describe her teaching methods. Sometimes she seemed focused and other times things just seemed random and hard to follow. Her test were pretty "interesting". They seemed to be more about what she thought would be an appropriate answer as opposed to facts in the book. Probably wouldn't take class over if I had too.
she does not teach out off the textbook, and sometimes over explains things and make it confusing. and yes, her tests are pretty much based on what she says, and sometimes have questions seem never discussed. but i still got an a so i can't complain
Took online course. Absolutely horrible. Unclear, takes an extremely long time to respond to emails, DOES NOT TEACH! You read, you write, and you get graded horribly. Avoid at all costs.
If you are expecting to be spoon feed material to memorize, this is not the course for you. If you want to be challenged and learn how to synthesize lecture and course materials-take this course, you will be better prepared for upper division work. The only part I didn't care for was the group project. why is this necessary at the college level?
So this is one of the most apathetic lecturers i've ever had. She is boring and when questioned she comes up with inconsistent formulations of concepts. What she explains in 2 weeks can be explained in ONE LECTURE by ANYONE else. I you are interested in comp pol, take the class at smc-they have much better polsci professors in general.
She is a very easy teacher. She explains the material clearly and test are a piece of cake. She is a little random but oh well she rocks!
Such a boring teacher she talks and talks and the lectures seem so long! she's a nice lady but her class is so boring and it feels like attendance doesn't matter due to the fact that she doesn't take role. PS if your good at someone babbling for so long and you could take notes quickly take her and you could turn in your work late which is cool.
overall its an alright class. her lectures are boring but gives good information and elaborates on concepts well. what i like is that you can turn in assignments late. not alot of hw. oh and she gives the option to take essay or multiple choice exam
I skipped a lot of class and still got an A. If you don't do well in the class it is because you don't listen well, take notes and listen. I learned a lot though it got boring at times really glad I was in the class. I went to her office hours and she was really helpful it is a really straightforward class will minimal work. DNT buy book :)
Are you kidding me... this teacher was so uninvolved! Granted it was an online class but I have copies of chat room conversations between all the students asking if anyone has heard when she was going to post tests that were supposed to be opened a WEEK before; never answered emails, forgot to grade a bunch of my stuff. Got an A but beware!!
PLease save copies of your assignments even after you send them to her, It would help you a lot. Her emailing is slow or she may not answer at all. Over all not a hard class just stay on top and don't get to behind. Her test aren't bad all from the reading.
Horrible teacher. Most uninvolved on-line professor I have ever had. Takes FOREVER to reply to emails and has no presance in the on-line class at all. Assignments and tests are easy as long as you can find them. She had many things due that weren't up or open in the on-line site. Avoid if you can.
this is an easy class even if you don't do well on test you can still pass .She doesn't really write notes on board so you need to pay attention , go to s.i if offered .She gives tons of extra credit opportunities
Dr. Houske is a great professor and her online courses allow you to work at your own pace which is something anyone can appreciate especially if you have other classes. I took PoliSci 1 and PoliSci 2 with her online, I learned so much! she is an extremely easy grader as long as she can tell that you actually put somewhat effort into your work!
Professor Houske is an exceptional professor. She throughly explains each case study and everything she says is on the test. Her class consists of long 2 hour lectures so take really good notes as it help! Otherwise you'll have to read the book. Be organized and detailed on test! It'sa must otherwise you'll fail trust me. Print her case list online
Ms.Houske is a great professor and she is really detailed. Get ready to take good notes because she explains every case study throughly that it just sticks to your head. I love her! Read the readings she assigns it really helps and print her case list as it helps prepare for the test. She is not strict on attendance, but it's a pariticpation grade.
As a Poli Sci major, I respect her a lot. Her lectures are very detailed and you could tell she enjoys and is passionate about the subject matter. What sucks is that people are very uninvolved, she likes participation out of students. You could pass the class without a textbook, as long as youre there for the lectures
Professor Houske is a very nice lady. She wants you to be excited about the subject and does a good job of showing her own enthusiasm. The lectures are a little boring as she just stands there and talks. Overall she is a good teacher.
Her lectures are long and can get boring very quickly but if you're looking for serious detail then she is the professor for you. Exams are tough but if you take good notes and actually study then you should be fine. Offers extra credit that can easily push you in the direction of an "A". Class isn't rocket science, do the work and you'll get an A.
She speaks for the entire lecture and doesn't use visuals. Midterm and final are essays, she wants you to write a lot and give detail. Make sure to take good notes and don't buy the book. She's really good about answering questions, clear about what she wants, and is really nice. Offers extra credit.
She's challenging because 90% of class time is dedicated to her lecturing at her podium. I have to give her credit - she knows that all 4-year universities has professors more tough than her. She sets her class up to prepare the students fro when they transfer.
This was an OK class. It's online, so you're basically teaching yourself. There are exams for nearly every chapter, one 110 question final and midterm. 4 discussion boards. Provides 40+ points of extra credit. Didn't reply to my emails. Political journal on 5 ongoing events and essay on movie. Usually score A's on writing, but she gave me a B.
I TOOK HER POLI SCI COURSE ONLINE FOR A FALL COURSE .I ACTUALLY HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET HER FACE TO FACE IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER SHE DID AEVERYTHING SHE SAID WE WERE GOING TO BE LEARN AND ADSIGNMENTS WERE EXACTLY THAT AND EXAMS MIDTERMS FINALS AND MORE .STAY ONTOP OF WORK .PASSED HER CLASS BUT SHE DID RETURN MY MESSAGE ABOUT A MISSING ASSI
TEST ONLINE EVERY WEEK WHICH ISN'T TOO BAD. 4 DISCUSSION POSTS BUT ONLY 3 GET GRADED. JOURNAL OF 5 EVENTS YOU HAVE TO WRITE ABOUT AND DUE AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. 1 PAPER ABOUT THE POLITICAL PROCESS IN A MOVIE. OVERALL, OKAY CLASS. NOT THAT GREAT OF KNOWING WHAT YOU HAVE IN CLASS, SAID SHE WOULD GIVE PROGRESS REPORT BUT NEVER DID.
The whole class is her lecturing.. No power points AT ALL. At first it was very boring and seems like you don't need to come to class. That's when you start slipping. Hard to find out what you have. But LITERALLY everything you will do is on her faculty website. 1 test is very easy... not the mdterm or final. Try to pay attention. Overall easy
Straight forward. She stands and lectures and i thought it was pretty clear. Midterm and final are essays and are simple if you know your stuff. Ask questions, make comments, do the extra credit if you need it.
I had her for summer and she had no powerpoints. Listen carefuly to her lectures and study your notes. You have a choice to take the essay exam or the multiple choice exam. Do her extra credits because THEY ARE LIKE GOLD.
Online class, got the A. Worst online class EVER! Opens up her online class LATE. That was already a bad sign. Syllabus outdated with old term info. Does not reply to e-mails quickly or at all. All work is done through a Java based site by the publisher Pearson. Take another teacher, this was not worth all the effort.
Prof. Houske has the best Poli Sci conversations in class. As long as you debate on the spot with her to show that you know something whether she agrees or not, you'll have a great chance of a high grade. She has few assignments, 2 essay test that are easy to pass if you keep asking her what shes looking for. Great articles to read and easy A
Straight forward. Fast and easy lectures. It is a lecture so idk why people expect something else.
she is good. the subject is dry for me, but i did not go to sleep once! study, participate, and stay involved. No sense in belly-achin', you have to take this course no matter what.
Professor Houske is kind and very helpful. She lectures everyday you come to her class, but it's just her speaking. She doesn't assign a lot of homework, but expect to take notes everyday in class. Everything that she lectures on in class will be on the constitution, midterm, and final exam. She's awesome because she gives some extra credit!
Professor Houske is amazing! I really did not use the textbook , if you take great notes then you will be fine.
If you take good notes and really study then you will be fine
Professor Houske is amazing. Her lectures are organized and informative. She's easy to learn from and offers chances at extra credit. The textbook isn't mandatory but I used it to fill in the note sheets on days I was absent. She also doesn't teach opinion, only fact. I've been in her class for 16 weeks and I still don't know her political party :)
I liked the professor, but I honestly had a hard time figuring out what she wanted in her tests! I wrote so much content but she always told me to be more detailed. Most of my tests were extremely high B's. 88 & 89s. So close. At least she gives extra credit! I really liked her lectures and she was all fact and zero opinion.
Not my favorite subject but Houske made it interesting! The class is not very demanding and if you take good notes during her lectures, you will be OK for the tests. Extra credit is available which can really help your grade!
I took her Poli1 online class and she never responded to any of my emails and the majority of my classmates were confused throughout the enitre course. I ended up with an A, but the class was extremely stressful since we really had no idea what was going on.
I took Houske online for Summer 2017. She did not have any specific due dates, everything just had to be dine by the end of the semester. There are 12 chapter exams, a midterm, a final, political journal, and a paper. Very easy grader, very easy class. She is not very active online, but she posts the syllabus and lays out everything clearly.
I took her online class on Winter 2018 and was a solid class. She is not so active online but lays everything she wants in the beginning with her syllabus! If you do all your assignments on time easy A! There are just 3 discussion boards, 5 political journals, a midterm, final, and a paper
If you have any questions about the class, exam, homework, you have to directly go to her so you can get answer. ALSO, no textbook uses, no powerpoint given. you have to listen every single things in entire class so you can study for the exam. Oh! and no study guide!
POLI-1-2716; Governments US/Calif Spring Semester 2018 02/10/18 - 06/08/18 -- - You write your own attendance on roll sheet - READ class book, take GOOD notes to maximize odds of good score on tests - Note take in-class, TURN in notes at end of course - 2 EC opportunities (20 pts. ) - 1 written assign. - Online syllabus (search up name w/ class
I took her summer course online. The assignments are manageable, but putting effort in the assignments is needed. The tests are on Canvas, Midterm and final are 100 questions. There are two writing assignments 5 topic journal and a 4-5 page paper. Discussion board is mandatory and Pearson Revel is needed. Do not wait on the last week to do the work
She is alright and her online class is manageable. The due dates in her online class are flexible because she has assignments due on the last day of the semester however it is nice but it would be nice for her to grade assignments on time and I would not recommend doing everything last minute in the last week of the semester and it is alot of work.
She never grades assignments on time and then she opened her class late and then the online quizzes are confusing and some of the answers from the online quizzes are not in the book and it caused me to have a low grade and I am scared. She does not respond to email soon if you email and I would not recommend taking her online class.
Took poli sci 1 online during the spring. This class was so easy I forgot that I even was taking this class a few times during the semester.
Doesn't put the grades online so you don't really know what your grade is. I took her for fall and she still hasn't put the grades up and grades were due yesterday. Lectures are her talking the whole time. Tests are pretty straight forward. Decent class. Cool person overall.
Shes really knowledgeable about the subject and has no issue going into further detail if needed. She talks the whole time but if you take good notes and listen youll be fine (she also provides the note sheets for you).
Shes ok, I wouldn't want to take her again. She doesnt explain things entirely well and is hard to follow sometimes but you should pass
Houske is a very nice professor. However, I took this class not knowing much about poli sci & was completely lost. The class is strictly only lectures (no visuals at all), and essays in which she expects you to "anticipate" the prompts. I do not recommend taking this class if you have little knowledge in politics. Good class for polsci majors.
This class was very difficult, and I was not expecting to earn an A. We got graded on a very small number of assignments, all quizzes and test. All tests were long, timed, essay responses. She stood in front of the class and lectured for two hours with no slides, no writing on the board, no textbook, nothing. Just talking for two hours.
All the assignments are due close to the end of the semester. If you really dedicate yourself to reading the material there is no reason you shouldn't pass. You literally read a chapter take a quiz, then every few chapters take an exam over everything.
I love when teachers post homework early-- it allows me to get my work done fast in case I have something important to do in the near future; it gives my schedule some flexibility. There are a lot of small quizzes which can add up and hurt your grade; however, the extra credit was a significant grade booster.
As an online class, everything is given up front. There was a suggested due date for each chapter and test, but the only requirement was everything needed to be done by the end of the semester. I found this to be good as I could get ahead or fall behind and catch up whenever I needed it.
Took her course online. I would highly recommend for students who tend to do things in bursts- that is, students who will get multiple units done in 1 week and then take a week off, as deadlines arent a big deal to her. Just take notes and read your book, youll do fine.
Lauries Poli sci 6 class is no joke as any poli sci major is going to have to take it. It's an extremely hard class. aside from that if you take your major seriously it's a class you want to take. Laurie gives you a lot of chances and is flexible with assignments. Just be straight up with her. Her class is amazing in the things you'll learn.
Her online class is pretty easy; you have 5-7 short quizzes per chapter, 15 tests ( you get two hours and two tries to complete), four discussions, and two written assignments. There are no specific due dates, so you can turn in everything at the end of the semester or finish them early. She doesn't really respond to emails, otherwise, she's great!
Prof. Houske is absolutely amazing. She is one of the most nicest and understanding professors I came across at ECC. She really wants you to succeed. If you do your work and watch the lectures, you will not only get an A but you will genuinely learn a lot.
Great professor! She understands that students have a life outside of school. The textbook she assigns is great! It is clear and straightforward, as long as you put in the time you will get a good grade.
Houske is chill, a few lectures to watch each week and some articles - not too long mostly. There were only two discussions, 5 quizzes, and four tests and you have to write a paper of three to four pages, and another final paper, midterm, and final test that includes 4 questions but you choose two to answer. Plenty of time for assignments.
The professor is nice, I just can stand the fact she skips certain area and give a vague explanation of the subject matter. Would recommend that you take another class unless you can stand lectures without representation.
Doesn't seem to have a very good understanding of Canvas. Left my grade at a D for weeks stressing me out. By the drop date I had no idea what my grade is in the class. Impossible to know where you stand. Seems like she might be better in person, but do not take her fully online
The good thing about her class is that there are no late penalties. In my opinion, her grading criteria aren't clear. I have had to email her multiple times on multiple assignments for clarification (sometimes she doesn't even reply). The lecture wasn't that helpful, but it's not that hard to figure out the assignment.
Online Winter Class: You will have to buy an online textbook which includes quizzes and readings which are graded for credit. The best thing is that she gives you until the end of the semester to turn in your late assignments. Midterm was a short paper and the final was a longer essay.
This professor was very helpful. Class was lecture heavy but it was interesting. Thought the semester I was going through a lot but managed to pass with a C. It's an easy class in person, but make sure not to wait until the last minute to do assignments.
While it's a very reading/lecture heavy course, she explains the material in a very understandble and easy to comprehend way. The textbook is also very helpful in doing the writing assignments and the homework. Nevertheless, I will say that she is kind of a lax grader, as well as a tough grader for the course's paper and the exam's essay answers.
Often talked in circles instead of explaining topics and also a zionist so beware.
Amazing, very nice professor
Really easy for online classes. Just have to read a lot of textbook notes and do the quizzes/exams she assigns. There is a lot of material though so use your open notes.
The professor can be hit-or-miss, but using tools like Unstuckstudy alongside the free textbook helped me engage with the content and earn a solid grade.
Prof Houske is super nice and explains the topic clearly and unbiasedly. With that being said, before you choose to take her, you should be aware that her classes consist of nothing but her talking. By that I mean she has no slides, no videos, nothing. Just her at the podium. If that's not your learning style, maybe consider someone else.
It's all on your own time, but if you have questions or concerns, be prepared to figure it out yourself. She does not respond to emails. She requires you to buy a $50 seperate website to use just to take quizzes. This website is extremely slow. There are about 8 quizzes and 3 exams due every sunday in her winter course. 5 page final paper.
Took her online and it was great! Just know everything is self-paced and self-learning, so all she did was assign things. There were a lot of papers at the end which were long, but if you know how to use your tech you should be fine. She did offer a lot of extra credit just in case tho. accepts late work too!
She does not work with PowerPoints or slides, her lectures are verbal only, so be ready to take notes and rely on those notes only. Though, a positive is that she routinely asks the class for questions, and sometimes may write on the board.
All she does is lecture. There's nothing to go off of (slides) while she is explaining. She gives you a packet with topics and you write while she speaks. She somewhat teaches as if we should have basic knowledge of it beforehand. Exams are tough and your end of the semester grade are your exam grades. Not much to help balance it out.
Lots of reading and the grading is fair, overall enjoyable class.
I don't recommend this instructor. She won't reply to emails, she grades things after the semester is over, and does not explain instructions clearly. If you need to purchase a book, buy an older edition as the one she wants is quite expensive.
I understand the controversy with Professor Houske but she's not a bad professor. Her teaching isn't for everyone, it's just her talking for almost 2 hours and you have to take notes during that time. I learned more about political science than ever before thanks to her lectures. There's 3 exams, even if you do poorly on them, YOU CAN STILL PASS.
