Laurie is such a good prof. She is always enthusiastic about what she teaches, and she has a great sense of humor. Exams are multiple choice, short answer, true or false, and one matching question. There were two midterms and a final. The class itself is difficult if you aren't a science person, and there is A LOT of information to know. Don't skip
My feelings about this class are pretty neutral. I didn't get what I expected because I found the actual neurological information to be peripherary and superficial... and too much of a giant information dump. Without a question she knows her stuff, but she could go more in depth sometimes... in an organized way.
I enjoyed this class. If you read the recommended pages of the textbook,go to class, and understand the concepts you can do well. Her notes are a good outline and the relevant pages of the textbook do a good job of explaining the concepts. A backround in the sciences would indeed be beneficial.
excellent class and enthusiastic prof
great professor, you learn a lot, she is enthusiastic, and she is always bright and cheary and makes you smile
Hands down one of the best psyc profs at the school. Laurie's a wealth of knowledge, extremely organized. Read the text for her exams.
Worst class ever .. Brought down my GPA .. find someone else to teach the class
Laurie is veru knowledgeable, helpful and enthusiastic. Her expectations are high but reasonable. Read the text, review often and attend class and you'll do fine. I will definitely take another class from her.
Laurie is a fantastic prof. Very knowledgeable and quirky, always willing to help.
I've taken 3 classes (204, 255, 356) from Laurie & would take more if I could. She makes class interesting, knows her stuff & is enthusiastic about it, is always quick to address questions & concerns. Exams are sometimes a bit tough, but not ridiculous. Tries to give extra marks where she can on papers & participation. Overall, a really great prof!
Had her for biological foundations. Found the class brutal, but she was really nice, and fun to listen to.
I've taken two classes with her and I'll never take another. Getting through the hour and fifteen minute class was painful. I took this class as an average booster and in the end it was my lowest mark. Don't take a class from this prof there are lots of other psych profs who are actually good.
Class was terribly boring, but considering it was research methods..it might have been just the material. She's quite clear with her explanations though, and is generally upbeat and enthusiastic. I would probably take another class from her.
She's such a nerd I love it, she's so upbeat and excited and just thrilled to be at class teaching you can't help but like her. Gives very detailed outlines for exams but even still exams are a bit hard. There's a lot of material that you have to know so a lot of studying is required. She's so much fun tho I would take another class from her!
Great prof as usual. She's fun, helpful and knowledgeable. Lectures are made interesting. But oh man did she ever jack up the difficulty on the final exam! Look out for that, because compared to the midterms, it was just needlessly hard
Very upbeat! I was really scared about this class when I got my textbook because it's really not my forte, but she made everything clear and easy to understand with lots of examples. Partial slides posted online made writing them out a breeze. Don't bother buying the text - will just confuse you. Would take a class from her again!
Although Laurie is perky and clearly enthusiastic about what she teaches, her lecture style was boring and hard to stay awake through. This is the second class I've taken with Laurie and I will avoid them in the future. This class alone ended up lowering my 3.4 GPA.
This class is disgustingly boring but thats the material not her fault. She does her best to liven it up. Her assignments are annoying and time consuming but admittingly they do get your ready for other classes. Her exams are ok but some of her MC is very tricky. Shes ok oh dont bother with the text
If there's one thing I've learned to do in Laurie's classes, it's pay strict attention to what she actually says about the slides in the class. Overall the multiple choice can be tricky/very finicky with detail, but not bad if you've written down the important stuff she says. She's not a bad prof at all, but her classes can be a bit dry.
To the person who wrote that her class brought down their 3.4 GPA... do you even go to the U of R because last time I checked we don't use the 4.0 scale. Aside from that, Laurie's classes have never brought my average down. She is a great prof extremely knowledgable and will acutally take the time to teach you how to write a research paper and tell
Cont.. you what she expects... If you don't get a good mark maybe you should work harder. She marks very fair, this is university not highschool. She is prob one of the most approachable profs at the U of R. Definitley take any classes you can with her.
Had PSYC 102 with Laurie and she was great. She is still grade but 255 is way harder! There is a lot of material. Midterms are jam packed, not hopeful for the final. This class could be my lowest grade in university and this is my last year. She is very nice and willing to help though. Recommended overall. Great person.
Very approachable. Print out her notes and write down some things she says from the lectures. Prepare to study a lot of detailed material. Warning: Her multiple choice can be very tricky. Just ask questions, and she'll help you out. Good prof.
I'll be honest. Jealous and rude to smart, attractive females. Attractive males, just flirt and she'll hand you the answer. P.S even if you score 95 on the midterm, you MUST listen ATTENTIVELY to her read the answer key, or she gets pissy and calls you out in front of the class. Quite the ego on this lady, but she teaches good stuff.
Excellent professor. Teaches so that you understand. Cares about how well you do in her class.
Good class, she makes the class enjoyable as possible. Test is not bad. Can use text book for better understanding or clarification if you need a little more help. Lots of information to know as it is about behavioural research. lots of terms to know but Laurie makes the class good.
Her tests were incredibly hard and very tricky. I understand that the research methods are not the most interesting and she tried to make it interesting but didn't succeed. She gets on one's nerves and while she's a nice lady, I don't like her as a teacher.
I had Laurie for BFB And methods. She is very helpful and approachable, i dont understand why anyone would ever say shes jealous and rude to women! She's helped me more than any other prof I've had.
Laurie is a great prof. She explains things clearly, and the texbook is very helpful in explaining things further in depth. Her tests can be tricky, especially the Multiple Chioce. However, if you study, and attend class you should have no problem getting a good grade in this class.
The first day of classes made me second guess my choice to take the class, but after that I was happy I did. She's very eccentric at times, but she's very good at explaining things. She's very passionate about the subject, which translates into motivation for students to do well. Take a class with Laurie if you can
An easy class if you can stand to sit through every lecture and mindlessly fill in the blanks on pre-formatted lecture notes. Designed to punish students who dont attend every lecture and may prefer to learn from the text. She omits a lot of details from the class notes posted online that arent in the text which ends up butchering you on tests.
Laurie is a great prof. Her class is not easy, but she provides all the tools you need to succeed in the lecture. Beyond that, she gracefully manages to be feminine while highly successful academically and as a professional. She is stron. She is a great role model for ambitious women.
Excellent prof. She really shows how much she cares about her students doing well in her class. Explains things very well and I had no problem understanding any of the course content when it was explained. Quite friendly and definitely easy to talk to. Study what she tells you to and above and beyond and you should do well in her class :)
Great prof and really nice. I love chatting with her after class, and I especially love how she goes out of her way to find articles I'll be interested in! She really seems to be interested in the subject she's teaching, and wants her students to be interested too.
Laurie is so helpful and caring. It would be common that should would explain more than you were expected to know, just because she was so passionate about the material. Don't buy the textbook, the old version is online on slideshare - and search "an introduction to brain and behavior".
Her lectures are fill in the blank and a lot of the information isn't on the slides. It comes from her talking. Taking notes in this class is overwhelming and missing class is a no-no unless you know someone who will give you the notes. Her exams can be difficult but if you study enough you can get a good mark. She is very nice though.
I would not recommend taking a class with her. She uses slides but leaves blanks where important info should be and will not give you the filled in slides if you miss class. 2 midterms and a final. First midterm is easy, second is horrible!!
Great professor! She absolutely loves what she does, and is incredibly helpful and supportive of her students. She always ends up leaving a chapter out from the syllabus because she takes FOREVER to talk about anything, but that's only because she wants everyone to understand the material. Would take another class by her!
Very passionate prof. You can tell she really knows what she's teaching. Sometimes she gets a bit ahead of herself and can ramble on a little bit. She's definitely a character, and doesn't ever dismiss class early. Tests are fair, but you need to be able to apply your knowledge. This is a class for those who is truly interested in the content.
Laurie is a very upbeat prof and is enthusiastic as well as passionate about the work that she does. Sometimes, she was difficult to follow because she talks a million miles per minute, but she wants to share her knowledge with you in an in depth manor. I found I struggled with note taking.
One of the best professors ever! She is there for you and answer all your questions. She is extremely knowledgeable about the subject. Tests are not difficult as long as you take good notes. I enjoyed this course and learned a lot. I would take more courses from her in a heartbeat 3
Laurie was very enthusiastic about the class, but seemed unorganized and scattered during lecture. She regularly would go on tangents that would distract from what was needed to know. Very lecture heavy and very fast moving. LOTS of memorization. Grade based on midterm and cumulative final exam. Hardest PSYC class I've taken.
Laurie is very passionate about what she teaches. she speak longer than need be but only for the purpose of making it very clear and understandable. It's better to over explain than not at all. I thought I would hate the content but Laurie made this class worth while and interesting. She teaches to the best of her ability. Don't skip.
Great professor, could teach anyone about the brain and behaviour. Exams and papers are tough, but if you study and know the material you will do well.
I absolutely love Laurie! The class can be kind of difficult and she knows that, so she really tries to make sure everyone understands. She decided not to have a final so instead we had 2 midterms, 2 journal article assignments, and a paper. The paper was long and needed tons of references but she gives amazing feedback and lots of it!
Laurie is a phenomenal professor. She is very passionate about the material and takes her time to explain it all. She outlines her expectations clearly so it is very possible to do well if you go to class and study. Make sure to read her multiple choice questions closely as she is very specific and sometimes has trick questions.
So she likes to talk and talk and talk. She over explains EVERYTHING. (which can be a good thing) but it's almost annoying.. her tests are fair if you study. she's really happy go lucky and very hyper which makes it hard and easy to learn the material and pay attention...... anyways an hour and 15 min with her is way too long. but ok class.
Laurie is very knowledgable and charismatic. Unfortunately that can be quite distracting and she is prone to tangents. She is also the kind of professor that believes that "marks must be earned, they aren't lost" so don't be expecting to get an outstanding grade, and be prepared to "not earn marks" for the most minute things.
Laurie is a solid prof. She takes her time to elaborate on difficult concepts. We were graded on: midterm, 2 journal article assignments, participation, lab report and a final. Listen closely when she reviews APA, as she is not lenient with APA errors. You really need to pay attention to the small details on assignments and exams to do well.
Awesome prof who knows material, is excited about the material, and keeps material current!
My favourite prof so far. This class was a bit harder than psych 255 , but it is still possible to get a good mark with enough effort. She gives great feedback, cares about her students and their learning, and is very good at inspiring interest in the material. She managed to make my favourite subject even more fascinating.
Laurie is one of the best psyc profs. Great lectures, with detailed explanation, and very fair marking schemes. Laurie teaches 255 like a real science class that assesses based on conceptual understanding, and not BS memorized details. Her tests are MC, short answer, and matching. Be attentive in class, take notes, and can score very highly.
Laurie is a fantastic professor! She taught the first half of the course and then the second half was entirely student seminars. Each student had 2 group projects. Theres also a midterm and final. Studying for the final was a little hard because the final was based on the group presentations. Exams were a little challenging, especially the final.
LAURIE IS AMAZING!! Need I say more? She has Altered the trajectory of my future. Her class is absolutely earth shattering. I literally love her. Take this class!!
HAATTEEEE the "partial slides" system. she's a good prof with good lectures and she's very smart but I truly loathe the partial slides system, plus she keeps on talking as your trying to fill in the slides and take notes at the same time. Plus if you miss one class, your screwed!
id recommend having a background in science as she assumes all have a good understanding of it she talks so fast and if you mess up taking notes once and go to rewrite what she said shell be 4 slides away already most test material is on the passive stuff not key things. does not give review for tests. ask her a question and youll be more confused
Laurie is a great prof! She is extremely knowledgable, and able to answer questions in a meaningful way. I enjoyed the partial slides as you can fill in the blanks, then take extra notes to better understand the material. I reccomend taking a laptop with you for this class. Tests were fair but challenging. Cumulative final
I didn't mind Laurie as a prof. She is extremely knowledgeable and does a pretty good job of conveying her point. Her exams are hard but fair so make sure to study absolutely everything.
Such an amazing prof, she's so funny and so genuinely smart. Makes the class interesting cause she's so excited. The material is intimidating but she makes the tests very fair and if you work hard you'll get a good mark. Would deffs take another class from her. She's so funny highly recommend! Also, always say good morning/afternoon back!
Laurie is one of my favourite prof's at the U of R. Two midterms, and a final is what her Psyc 255 course consisted of. Her lectures are heavy with material, however all of it is interesting and useful. She is a VERY fair marker and wants her students to get the best possible grade. Study for her tests and you'll do just fine. I highly recommend!
Not accommodating to students with disabilities involving reading comprehension and test anxiety because all three of her exams were primarily multiple choice. Her excuse for this laziness was - it prevents cheating, yet most of the questions students were getting wrong were a direct result of careful word play - trick questions. Very unfair!!
I liked Laurie. She was enthusiastic about the content and always willing to answer questions. Class was only 2 midterms and final with weekly quizzes. There is a lot of content to learn and lectures could be quite dry but Laurie explained everything and was clear on expectations.
Definitely need to attend/watch the lectures. There is 2 midterms and a final with weekly quizzes. Tests are fair and straightforward and you'll do good if you study what she talks about in class. She's very kind and will take the time to answer any questions you have. Its clear she cares about her students. By far one of the best profs I've had
As an individual who struggles with test-heavy classes that are solely multiple-choice, this was not my favorite class. I never had any good opportunities to explain course content as it was more of a "memorize" rather than "explain" the course content. Personally, I am going to do my best to steer clear in the future because I value how I learn.
Dr. Sykes Tottenham is very good at explaining the content and is very accessible to meet with if you have questions! She is very kind. Tests were medium-difficult, but if you understand the content and connections between different concepts, you'll be good. Make sure to write down/study what she says in lectures, even if not in the PowerPoint.
2 midterms and a final for grading criteria.
Brutal!! 6 hours a week worth of dry and slow lectures, textbook with about 40 pages per chapter and not helpful PowerPoints. Studied for a week straight for the final just to have the hardest exam. She relies mostly on you listening and taking notes in the lectures. Final was worth 48% so good luck at memorizing to pass. Avoid at all costs!!!
Cumulative final worth 48% of grade. Laurie explained the material well in lectures. It was important to write down her explanations instead of relying on the slides. It was also important to understand the material instead of resorting to memory alone for exams. She was always happy to answer questions via email.
Worse prof ever. Do not let the good ratings distract you. Her exam contents are extremely difficult compared to her lectures. The class itself isn't that hard but she will find every possible way to make people fail. I wrote 2 exams before dropping the class and both exams over 20 people failed. And she still thinks her exams are fair. 48% final!
She was so afraid people would cheat on the exams that she made them way too difficult. Lots of people failed the course. Just take this class with a different professor.
expects way too much for a 200 level psych course, in every other 200 level psych course I got 80s but this one I am barely passing so far. exams are extremely difficult, over half the class failed or barely passed. take this class with someone else! i have no idea why she has so many great reviews.
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken, didn't help that it was online and had so content that it was hard to find time for it all. Laurie seems like a nice person, but her exams are so hard and are nothing like the lectures and textbook. I would suggest either taking this class with another professor or at least take it in person.
I believe Dr. Tottenham is a great professor. I agree that the class is heavier; however, it is not difficult to do well if you are willing to take the time to learn the content. I have almost completed a biology degree and took this class as an elective. Having this background is beneficial, but it is possible to do well otherwise.
W/O a doubt in my mind Laurie is one of the best Profs out there. Ive had her for 205,255+356 she is AWESOME. Do your readings+lectures OFC:) She will break things down for you+ is always answer any Qs. Her approach is single handedly the best teaching style as she makes things fun+interactive! Everything you will learn is so cool too so enjoy:')
has no idea how to teach, lectures are long, dry, boring and often someone else can be heard talking in the background. So afraid people will cheat that she makes her exams very hard, the format tough to understand. The semester has ended with the final in a week and we have not got a single grade back. Avoid her, don't be fooled by the rating.
the professor kept sending my video to the dean just on basis on unusual activity seen in the prototrack video but i never done any cheating this professor is been not a good pt video reviewer and she wants to make live of the student hard i would never take my course from her again and would recommend not to go for her. not notes given as well.
Accuses 2/3 of the class of cheating sending exams to the dean with no reason as to why, even months later. Class ended 2 weeks ago, most of us have not a single grade back. Terrible lectures, Sometimes I hear someone else laughing/making noise like 2 inches away from the mic.. in a prerecorded lecture?? Worst course I have ever taken in my life
This class was essentially what I had expected. It was an online course. There were 3 tests, and one final exam, as well as extra marks available easily. The tests were harder than I expected but that is of no blame on the professor, just my studying style. I would take another class from her.
LST really wants her students to understand material forwards & backwards The final was worth 48% which is excessive. I've definitely had worse professors. Wants students to reach out when they have Q's but dang, she made exams difficult (trick Q's) & is very concerned w/ cheating. I worked hard for the grade I got. Overall, she goes by the book.
Terrible prof. This was an online course, when asking for feedback or clarification of material none was given. High expectations for a 100 level course. Extremely worried of cheaters and accused majority of the class of cheating with no real reason. Class average very low. University should be looking into profs with class averages as low as hers
All semester students were being accused of cheating, even though they weren't. The class average got lower throughout the semester and she should be looked into with the class having such a low average. She didn't help or teach the class anything. The tests were worded hard and made it hard for us students to do well. Overall I do not recommend
She has no trust in her students at all and accuses EVERYONE of cheating. Because she accuses everyone it takes long for the dean to interview everyone. I had a hold on my account for 6 months which prevented me from registering for higher level psych classes
Course just started but I am writing a review for how terrible her lectures (prerecorded) are. Online class, only lectures and readings; lectures are so bad quality that you can't understand. Talks very slowly (used 2x) and laughing for no reason in lectures. Random man in background talk & laugh, voice low then high suddenly, so annoying, don't tak
ridiculously hard, just study what she says in the lecture, not the textbook or the powerpoints.
while it is obvious she is an educated instructor, she really needs to work on her outbursts. listening to her online videos was awful because she constantly raises and lowers her voice, shouts and laughs ridiculously loud. same during exams, she answers questions at full volume and is constantly laughing like a crazy person. would not take again.
It's really off putting how much she bursts out laughing for no reason at all. She even laughs loud during exams, giggles with her TA's and I find that extremely inconsiderate. Textbook never gets used. Pre recorded lectures are terrifying with her bursts of laughter and constant change in tone/speed/volume. Always with the "UHM" or "AHHHM". Loud.
Do NOT take her class. She laughs creepily with no prompting - both during lectures and exams. Has no volume or speed control so can't follow her lectures well. Extremely neurotic and inconsiderate. Her exams are formatted to confuse you and feature material she absolutely did not teach / include in lectures or textbook.
Gives unclear and last minute instructions, exams are poorly timed and have little to do with the textbook. Horrible professor, If I didn't need the credit I'd be dropping.
She is a knowledgeable prof and is passionate about the topics, but her recorded lectures are monotonous and she says "um" so many times!! Her exams were alright -- be ultra specific and know the content inside out.
She is a knowledgeable prof and gives clear instructions, reminders, and feedbacks for exams. Her recorded lectures are monotonous and have poor volume (I was listening to them at full volume and still couldn't hear her). Make sure to know your material thoroughly for exams.
What a fascinating course! If you love neuroscience, this is for you. Laurie is very knowledgeable, and breaks concepts down into feasible chunks. Her recorded lectures, however are slow and quiet. Exams are doable - know your concepts THOROUGHLY!
Very knowledgeable\kind. Lectures can be a long but she explains content very well! Majority of students who failed did not watch any lecture videos despite her stating clearly that exam content will be mostly what's been discussed in lecture videos. As long as you watch them you'll be fine but make sure to understand the material in said videos.
Don't take this prof if you value learning, although it is an easy course if you read the slides. 3 midterms and a final for an intro course like this is too heavy. Makes some questions impossible to understand. Has and average ~55 and states that it's cause nobody watches her lecture videos. There's a reason nobody watches them… BECAUSE THEY SUCK.
Would never take another class form her again Worst prof I have had Takes no accountability for almost all of the class failing and blames it on us not watching videos Despite watching videos, reading the textbook and studying the test has nothing to do with what you learned. Her videos consist of “uh” and “uhm”. she should be looked into for sure
Absolute WORST prof ever. Took her twice once in 2022 and another in 2024. Same lazy recycled lectures, marathon videos, no transcripts. Exams are mostly trick Qs that are based only on memorization, class averages stuck in the 60s, I never passed a single one. Do NOT torture yourself, you'll regret this class (Especially for neurodivergent brains)
My favourite subject being taught like this was uniquely torturous.
