Ok, but bad grader
Her Religion in America class was really interesting; it focused on the US as fertile ground for new religious ideas and utopias. She studies New Age practices, which were fascinating
Terribly biased towards feminism. Boring class. Do not feel that I really came out with much more knowledge than I have now. Very tough grader. A lot of reading is assigned in the class that I feel was worthless to me. Overall, I was not impressed.
Amazing class, a "must-take" for any Gtown student. Opens students up to a new way of thinking about the relationship between religion and gender

Class is pretty interesting, but she is an incredibly tough grader--not too clear on what she is looking for until after you get the assignment back. Large focus on feminist theology,so if you aren't interested in that, maybe try another P.O.G professor.
Can be a confusing grader and the class is biased towards feminsim. As a teacher, she is extremely generous with her time and advice. A fantastic person and friend of students. Definitely a prof worth spening office hours with.
Wonderful class. Exposure to lots of new ideas; very friendly, generous professor; not too hard. Definitely take if you have the chance!
if your willing to think and challenge your views and opinions you will get the most of the class... very willing to become your friend outside class
Very nice and helpful. Classes were interesting and thought provoking. Not a lot of work until the final.
Ridiculously interested in feminism and loves guys who take the class and can "identify" with the feminist approach. Her grading style is really random though...you never know what she's looking for. She means well but she's kinda out there.
Seemingly obsessed with feminism. Sort of an odd lady. Grading is erratic so don't expect it to correspond directly to the merit of the work submitted.
I LOVE Professor Steenhuisen! Engaging, knowledgable, and teaches such an interesting and relevant class! She really cares about her students, and if you put in hard work and passion, you will do well. :)
Her grading comments are vague, she does reward extra length in papers. Served more as a discussion moderator than a teacher- which was frustrating at times. If you are even remotely "conservative" in your faith, prepare to be be offended at one point or another.
I enjoyed this class-good PoG to take. Reading materials were really interesting. Class itself is kind of pointless (the notes don't go toward a test or anything) and there's a LOT of writing. Prof is very nice if a lil out there but always willing to help and genuinely interested in her students.
expect a LOT of writing that she initially grades very hard, but she lets you revise your papers as much as you want before the final project. class was interesting but very discussion-based and sort of unnecessary, but attendence is 10 or 15% of your grade and you can only miss 2.
The grading system in this Problem of God class is very unclear and often it feels as though the professor doesn't even know what she is looking for. There is a tremendous amount of writing in the class (5-8 pages per week), and grades seem very random - it's quantity that matters for this class, not quality. Take another theology class!
I took two of Prof. Steenhuisen's classes and loved both of them. Although I'm a guy whose conservative beliefs sometimes clashed with the material in the course, I felt my own beliefs were strenghtened by taking this class. She's a great teacher who is enthusiatic and always willing to help. Fairly easy class if you keep up with reading.
Class is not easy-a lot of reading is required, but if you do the work, grading is very fair. When i took the class, the mid-term and final were take home, so that was good. As a teacher, Dr. Steenhuisen is the most accessible prof I had had a gtown. She is very willing to meet outside of class or campus. She is one of the best teachers I have had at Gtown.
Very nice and fair to all religions. Respectful to students' comments and promotes engaging discussion. One simple quiz in the semester is nice, but five giant papers are not. She is also very biased towards feminist theology, which is were the class gets boring. Other than that, great teacher.
Quantity, not quality when it comes to writing papers. Her comments were always along the lines of: '..could have gone more in depth...' when I exceeded her required page numbers! I'm not sure what she wants in papers, but she's a great lecturer (even though attending class didn't really seem necessary) and the readings were great.
I liked this class a LOT more than i thought I would considering I'm not religious at all. It's really interesting. She is one of the nicest teachers I've had and really makes an effort to know everyone in the class. The work isn't hard as long as you don't wait till the very last minute.
Great class. It tends to have a legal focus yet only due to the material covered. You will learn a lot, and you can also voice your opinion frequently. Not a lot of work, and graded fairly. She also pushes the class back to 9AM. Very solid class, I highly recommend it.
I loved this class! The lectures are pretty interesting and the professor is sooo friendly! The workload isn't bad at all and she grades fairly. I would definitely recommend this course!
Really enjoyed her course. She is inviting of class discussion. But I was unclear about how she graded her material. Also for quizes make sure you regeritate what was in class, don't try to get creative and say it in your own words. She is an interesting lady and covered a variety of material which I found stimulating.
SO nice, really is engaged in the matierial and is really friendly with students. I worked fairly hard, maybe 3-4 hours a week, because I found the matierial interesting and got only A's, its definately manageble it is almost entirely paper based, and the papers aren't that hard to write. a GREAT class
noooooooooooooooooot good.
great teacher! she makes the class interesting and engaging! very good class discussion!
Definetely an interesting class considering the broad range of topics covered. Focus on feminism was somewhat interesting but at times felt forced into context. 5 papers, all of mine were at least ten pages, but it sounds alot worse than it actually is as most revolve around personal reflection or summary. Not too difficult overall.
I love Lauve Steenhuisen. Her class was amazing. For PoG, grading was based on papers and discussion, and its not hard to get an A. She definitely covers a lot of different aspects of religion, and definitely is a bit of feminist. Regardless, TAKE THIS CLASS!
Attendance is mandatory and you have to sign in every class, so don't take her unless you plan on going. That said, the 5 essays kinda suck but half is personal reflection (I probably wrote an average of 12 pages for each). Definitely a feminist but the class is fairly interesting, especially if you take it with crazy opinionated people
apparently aribtary evaluation policy--gives very little by way of constructive criticism
Absolutely amazing! Religion in America was a great class and Prof. Steenhuisen is an absolutely amazing woman. I went to her office hours and we ended up talking for over two hours. She loves her students, teaching, and the material. Interesting class, accomplished professor.
Amazing prof. really interesting class as well. Few assignments, barely any h/w. Worth getting up at 8.50
I loved this class! She assigns 4 papers which are 12-15 pages long but I learned so much from them. Half are reflection so they can be fun to write! Class was fun and interesting to attend, and we were never graded on material we learned in class...the only grades were the papers and 1 easy quiz. I totally recommend taking her!
4 LONG papers (12-20 pgs) that she grades difficultly and 1 easy quiz. Attendance mandatory. Not too bad of a class for your POG requirement, but be prepared to write those papers; this class is not for procrastinators! Can be a little critical towards non-religious people.
POG: amazing professor.. grades fairly. Interesting discussions. opened my world
the least academic individual i've encountered here, better suited to teaching kindergarten. discussion is superficial and lectures are used to brag about who she knows. papers are graded on "level of detail"-i.e. length. i guess you can't judge quality (rather than quantity) when you don't know your****. AVOID if actually interested in religion.
Best Theology class I've ever taken! The readings are actually interesting, the papers (4 reflections about your personal beliefs) thought-provoking. Class discussion can get a little tedious but outside of class Steenhuisen is great- always makes time to meet with students and chat. Take this POG!
Take her. She's awesome. This is what a real intro theo class should be like...you go thru most of the basic religions and watch videos and read articles. Good to do the reading but not necessary. You'll get an A if you participate and come to class. She's the nicest person and cares about her students. Let's you out early if it's a nice day out!
It's an interesting class, but she spent too much time on cults and new age spirituality for my taste. The class involves debates, short quizzes, and papers about the reading.
Brillant woman, passionate about her field, makes you think despite yourself. I didn't want to take this class, but the material and this professor made it worthwhile. Great quotes and stories to provoke thought!
She is one of the nicest profs. Understanding & caring, really wants students to like and understand the info. Interesting and relevant topics of discussion. Enlightening class. Pretty easy too, no final test or project. Take this class.
very easy class, easy A to get ride of your problem of god requirement. you have to write four 15 page papers but there is no final or midterm. however she is very uninteresting her class is pretty much worthless and she has nothing interesting to say but hey its an easy A
She's easy in class, but her requirement of four twenty page credos per semester is crazy. To be honest, it really isn't worth while taking this class to fill up your course requirements. She's a nice lady, but not very accepting of atheists and agnostics. If you are Jewish or Christian, you'll definitely love this course.
Very nice and cares abouther students. No tests or finals, but there are 4 15-20 page papers per semester. Half of the paper was your personal reflection but 20 pages is a lot. I also didn't get a lot of constructive criticism on the papers- I went from an A+ to a C+ with little explanation. If you don't mind writing a ton, an okay class to take.
Covered very wide range of pretty interesting topics, which also meant lot of reading(which you sort of need to do for essays).Takes roll. While she listened to the comments, didn't lead discussions quite well(doesn't respond to things out of her expectation). The writing killed me(a LOT, 4 15+ papers),which aimed for quantity over quality.Got A-.
Great class. Some of the students were a little feminist-crazy, but Prof S. was evenhanded. Three papers and a group project. Papers on the long side, but broken up into small straightforward questions. No final exam or paper which was amazing. GREAT READINGS!
This professor is wonderful. I took her for Problem of God, too. A 15 page paper is not that hard when more than half of it is just your own musings. She makes her expectations clear, is available to help her students, and is accepting of the beliefs of all her students. Whoever said she's not accepting of atheists or agnostics is full of it.
Professor is super smart and energetic. Knowledgable about her field, very helpful. If you want to learn about higher consciousness and enlightenment, she is incredibly gifted in teaching these.
Stimulating course, taught early in morning. Prof kept us awake and engaged. Mock Trial a good way to learn Supreme Court material, especially if you are headed to law school
When in your life is someone going to ask you what you believe and take your answers seriously? This professor is wonderful: patient, deep, insightful, edgy. She pushes you to examine your own core. Those who say she doesn't provide good critique didn't get good grades or do good work.
Warmest professor I have encountered at Georgetown- seemed to take a personal interest in my essay responses and asked me to coffee to discuss them further. While her four 15-page papers make for an egregious time commitment, responding to her questions about my personal beliefs made me think about myself on a deeper level than ever before.
Fantastic teacher.
Incredible professor who has designed an awesome class that blows every other Problem of God class out of the water. Though the writing load is quite heavy, it's spaced out pretty well and in between you really have no other assignments. Fascinating discussions and you will learn a lot about yourself. Prof who truly cares about students.
A great professor for Problem of God. Cares deeply about the class and her students. Writing load is heavy, but doable and actually can be really interesting to write. Encourages a lot of discussion. Not your typical Problem of God, but definitely recommended.
Nice lady, reasonably easy grader. Required papers are rather unnecessarily long, but requirements for the papers are clearly outlined. The subject matter is also quite interesting, and wasn't nearly as "preachy" as I would've expected from a gender studies type of class.
Very knowledgeable and caring, which is why I took her for a second time. Learned a lot about roles of women/politics of gender in diff. religions through reading and assignments. She spends too much time delineating the tenets of different religion (w/o specific regard to gender politics). Engaging class discussions. Doesn't care about punctuality
Professor Steenhuisen is extremely friendly and her class is definitely worth it. This was my favorite class and I had it on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. She is really helpful and will basically understand if you have a conflict with something. There is no final but you do have to write 4 15 page papers. Once you start writing though, it is easy.
Smart, very 'present' in class, keeps classes moving and entertaining--charismatic teacher. Very accessible and warm. Highly recommended!
Prof Steenhuisen is one of the most wonderful and kind professors I've ever had. Even as an 8am class, she kept things lively and I was always excited to see what she had in store for us. Two relatively easy papers in the beginning of the year, one group presentation (lots of choices), and a final paper to replace the exam. I'd recommend her.
Professor Steenhuisen was awesome for POG. She's really fun and engages the class in a positive way.
She is quite possibly the worst professor in existence. She gives false info about religions. She has a general ignorance about the subject and constantly pushes her Lutheran beliefs on others. The 15 page papers are not at all well explained and the grading criteria is vague at best. She is a sweet person but has no filter. Also 8 am is never good
Can be a bit unclear about grading standards but is a lovely woman who is always willing to work with her students.
Took her for her State & the Veil course. Very interesting course & she facilitated stimulating discussions with students. She was super helpful and friendly. Three short papers & a few smaller assignments. Attendance was optional but the class discussions made it so that I wanted to attend and participate. If she offers this course again, take it.
She is such a nice person and the lectures are interesting. She tries to make the class fun and was always really energetic at 9AM in the morning. I would definitely recommend her for Problem of God if you do not mind writing a lot.
I really enjoyed Problem of God with Steenhuisen, her lectures were fun and engaging. I feel like a learned a lot about theology and different religions. She does assign a 60 page paper (split into 4, 15 page submissions) so do not take her for Problem of God if you are not prepared to really write.
Professor Steenhuisen's course could not have been more interesting. Her emphasis on discussion made the classroom a dynamic place for debate, something I thoroughly enjoyed. If you're looking for another Theology, take this class!
Would highly recommend her Politics of Gender in World Religions class. Hands down, best professor and class I've taken at Georgetown. She is very knowledgable on world religions and challenges you to expand your comfort zone. There's a 15-page paper right off the bat, but there are graded discussions instead of tests which is a plus.
Amazing approach to a theo class. Read some of my favorite books so far. one test on aquinas, very simple told us the exact questions, 3 papers(10 pgs minimum) would recommend. really made this class a great self reflection. fairly simple. grading is clear. hard not to pass. Is very objective on what she teaches and truly values everyone's opinion
Professor Steenhuisen is amazingly kind and dedicated to her students. Her Problem of God class is interesting, objective and full of fascinating discussions. I couldn't recommend it enough. I loved her and would take her for a second theology - but I also don't mind 10 page papers and participate in class, two important traits for her class
One of the best professors I've had so far at Georgetown. Readings are interesting, and she facilitates great class discussions. Overall she's so nice, and she makes this class great. Also a pretty easy grader, three papers and one test (she tells you the questions beforehand). I'd take her for my second THEO in a heartbeat
She is really the best. Her class is engaging and fun, and she does not give much work. I had her for Religion In American Political Life
Her class was amazing, I realy enjoyed her lectures. She assigns three 8-10 papers and one test the topic is very easy and you find yourself needing more pages.
Dr. Steenhuisen for POG was a great choice, I lucked out randomly getting her. Class grade depends on a few big papers, but she's more than willing to help. As long as you keep up with readings and go to office hours you'll do fine in the class.
Very sweet lady, and is down to sit down with a student and have coffee with them. Her grading is confusing, and it lacks clarity. I would take her class, but don't be upset if you end up with a B+
Professor Steenhuisen is a great choice for Problem of God. She's an amazing woman, always very kind and respects everyone's ideas. There's no day-to-day homework, which is a plus. One exam and three 8-10 page papers. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She makes you work for A's on the papers but it's worth it I learned a lot about myself during this class.
Really good professor for PoG. I just wish I had known that you have to go to office hours to get an A or even an A- in the class. Her comments on graded papers are vague and not super helpful, but the papers themselves are easy to write. Take her class, but beware that you'll probably get a B+ if you don't go to office hours.
LIVE LOVE LAUVE! take her for problem of God!! The long papers may seem daunting at first but they're really not that bad! She is a wonderful professor and an even better person. Take the time to go to her office hours just to get to know her! Wonderful class experience, 10/10 would recommend
I cannot say enough good things about Professor Steenhuisen. She cares deeply about her students, not just in the classroom but on a personal level. Just an outstanding person. She is always accessible for help and grades very fairly. Lots of writing, but plenty of room to share your own thoughts. Very possible to earn an A. TAKE!
Really sweet lady who genuinely respects and cares about her students. My biggest critique is the class was supposed to be a survey of world religion, but it focused almost exclusively on White American Christianity.
Professor Steenhuisen is one of the most caring Professors that I have known. There is some reading but nothing outside the norm. Papers are long but super easy. She is willing to look at every point of view that you may have even if you completely disagree with the religion that is being taught. I recommend her for Problem of God.
She's a really nice and caring lady, but a tough grader. Her class is interesting but not really connected to the assignments which are 3 10 page papers. I recommend writing A LOT for her class, especially for the test at the beginning of the year.
Take Steenhuisen for POG!! If you're looking to just fulfill the requirement, this is the one. Steenhuisen is super nice and openminded, very sweet lady. There's 1 super easy test and 3 10 page papers, which are seriously not that bad. I'm terrible at writing but still managed an A without putting too much effort.
Professor Steenhuisen is one of the best professors you can take at Georgetown. Her papers are super fascinating and fun to write - they will completely change the way you think. She's a truly LOVELY person, and always available in office hours or for a coffee. 3 papers, 8-10p/e, otherwise no weekly homework or reading (not hard). 100% recommend.
Professor Steenhuisen was so sweet but SO unpredictable with grading - she'll tell you that you're paper is great and not to change a thing and give you a B- (btw wasn't me). 3 10 page papers throughout the course but not too bad if you get started early. She's big on participation so make sure you speak up in class!
Lauve is the bomb!!! She cares so much about her students. Pay attention in class, write a solid paper, and you will get a solid grade. Easy as that. I would love to take cults again.
This class is incredibly easy if you pay attention and go to office hours. Professor Steenhuisen is one of the nicest professors at Georgetown and truly cares about her students and their lives outside of school. The readings are really interesting and it's not much work at all- 1 test and 3 papers (10-page, but there's like 8 questions to answer)
I loved Prof Steenhuisen. She is hilarious, loving, and highly intellectual. Three 10 page papers - it is really not too bad, as the prompts are explicit and detailed. Though classmates criticized some of the literature, I found all four books we read to be intriguing and valuable. TAKE PROF STEENHUISEN FOR PROBLEM OF GOD!!!
Phenomenal professor. Lectures are consistently thought provoking and interesting, and occasionally inspirational. Religion and Cults in America is maybe the best class I took at Georgetown, don't miss it.
Prof Steenhuisen is the best- she truly cares about students and her classes are pretty interesting. The work itself is not bad, there are three 10 pg papers but the prompts given are very explicit. Her grading is very fair, but not too harsh. Definitely take this for POG.
Prof Steenhuisen is a sweet and caring person who wants the best for her students. She is well-versed in class content and uses readings, lectures, and more to ask challenging questions of deep personal reflection. I enjoyed the depth and intrigue of this class. Not too hard, but really makes you think if you buy into it.
Lauve is wonderful. She leads great discussions and is super knowledgable about the topic. The grade consisted of six discussion question posts, three papers (none longer than 5 pp), attendance/participation, and a presentation. Would recommend her for anyone needing a Theo prof.
I wasn't too excited to take this class given the reputation of POG at Georgetown, but Prof. Steenhuisen is the best professor I could have ever had for this course. Her assignments are very straightforward and she is the sweetest person on the Earth. She is passionate about teaching while understanding everyone's views about the subject. TAKE HER!
Professor Steenhuisen is one of the most caring professors I've met at Georgetown. Always makes time to speak with students outside of class. Also very open-minded and open to criticism; encourages students to speak their minds in class, and looks at each religion/belief that we study in class with an unbiased and open perspective. Highly recommend
Amazing woman. Literally the kindest soul! Her class is eye-opening, and your grade is based largely on 3 long papers, but they are really easy to write. Participation is key though, and it correlates with higher grades on papers. Go to office hours! She knows so much and can talk for hours about anything!!
Professor Steenhuisen is an amazing professor for problem of God. Her class consists of one Aquinas test, three 10 pg. papers and participation. She leads great discussions and is very welcoming of differing viewpoints. The class has distinct units which look at God's existence/non-existence, world religions, evil, and forgiveness. Overall, great!
Professor Steenhuisen is amazing! She is the kindest person, and truly respects and believes in her students. Essays are long (3 10-pagers), but talk to her individually and she will help you gather your thoughts, she is so knowledgable!
I took her Religion and Cults in America Class this summer and I have to say that it was one of the best classes I've ever taken. The classes were heavily discussion based, and there were some readings for the class to complete. There were only 3 papers to write (2 5 pagers and 1 page) and she really cares for her students to do well in her class.
Lauve is a very sweet lady! Her class is very chill (Grading: One memorization test 20%, 3 essays 20% each, participation 20%), and she gives good feedback. The essays aren't the easiest A's, but you can make up for it by participating and doing well on the first test. Kind of asks invasive questions and exposes students in class sometimes.... huh.
So caring and super accommodating during COVID. Class was interesting and an easy A, 3 short papers and a group presentation, all graded easily & timely. Prof is super sweet, cares about mental health, and very accessible outside of class. Reading not necessary except for before essays/graded discussion days. Great way to fulfill 2nd theo class.
Professor Steenhuisen is a perfect choice for POG. She is so nice, clearly cares about her students, and gives a lot of feedback on papers. The class is extremely interesting, and the books you have to read are short and eye opening. Papers are graded fairly tough, but you can make up for it by participating in discussions. Highly recommend.
Her class is 30% graded discussions, 60% papers (3 10-page papers each 20%), and 10% participation. She is the sweetest professor and always understanding. She has high expectations for the papers but is a very fair grader and always gives ample feedback. Highly recommend going to office hours and starting papers early. The best choice for POG!
this lady is so funny. it was so fun to be in her class. shes always talking abt something. shes really so funny and cares abt her students. i really appreciated her talking about all of the permanent changes shes going to make to her class because of the pandemic.
Took a class on cults with her and it was my favorite class I have taken at Georgetown. Professor is amazing; great insight and very understanding. An easy grader, but she is so great you will actually want to do your best work.
Dr. Steenhuisen is an incredibly caring person and a wonderful professor. The course has two short papers, with a group presentation and a 5-page final paper. There are a good amount of readings and documentaries in the syllabus, but they are all very interesting. I can't recommend Dr. Steenhuisen or this class enough!
Steenhuisen is an absolute gem. So kind and gives mental health days because she cares about her students so much. Take this class if you're looking for a really engaging POG course and actually want to dive into the subject. You will learn SO much about yourself and she is also very willing to chat on office hours. Can't recommend her enough!!!
Steenhuisen is so wonderful. So kind and gives mental health days because she cares about her students so much. Take this class if you're looking for a really engaging POG course and actually want to dive into the subject. You will learn SO much about yourself and she is also very willing to chat on office hours. Can't recommend her enough!!!
Her class is not that hard: although there are four books and three 10-page papers, if you care about the class and do the work, you will get an A. She is caring, willing to discuss with students, and gives detailed feedback. The discussions in her lectures are particularly inspiring: you learn from your peers and they help you frame your thoughts.
Outstanding choice for PoG! This class is much more about introspection and reflection than dense theological reading - you'll discover so much about yourself. She is flexible, caring, respectful of all (non)belief systems, and considerate of mental health. Effort is rewarded on papers. Go to her office hours. Life-changing course if you let it be.
Great prof! Really respectful of students other commitments and offered mental health days where we could just not show up to class. Most readings were provided on canvas, but a few I had to buy. Easy material; only three papers and they are graded fairly. Great POG professor!
Best prof I've ever had love this woman with my whole heart. Taking her again because she cares so much and genuinely wants her students to both learn and do well.
Such a sweet professor. She genuinely cares about her students and gives 3 mental health days a semester. 100% recommend for POG!!!!
Literally the kindest and most understanding professor. She gave us 3 mental health days which counted as excused absences. No exams, just 3 papers and if you try on those papers, your grade should be fine. And even though I'm not religious, the readings and class content are all pretty interesting! Definitely take her class!!
She is excellent, an expert in what she teaches. She is as caring as they come, and I would highly recommend the class as a relaxed course with a few low-stress assignments. You write three "credo" papers, each 10 pages long. In my experience, if you write 10 pages, you'll be fine with your grade. It can be a little dull at times, but it's chill.
One of the most caring professors you'll come across at GU and open to all backgrounds. Take her and you won't regret it.
Great choice for POG! She is so sweet and a really remarkable professor. She likes participation but I would have preferred to hear more from her and less from what random freshman thought about things haha. Beware the papers are long but super doable. One of the easier POGs from what I hear.
I love her. Would take her every semester if I had to. She gave us three optional mental health days to take at any time if we wanted. She gave us days off from class for no reason sometimes, and she only assigns three major papers/assignments throughout the whole semester. She is super nice and creates a stress-free environment during classes.
Not sure what more there is to say. The nicest prof by far that I have taken at Georgetown. You are graded on three ten-page papers but the averages are very high. Readings are few but very interesting. She's very available for office hours to work on your paper if need be. No complaints.
She is very nice and a fair grader, but to be honest I found the class to be a bit boring. Three ten page papers but as long as you don't start them the night before you'll be fine. Not a big theology fan myself, so perhaps this class was the least painful option. Overall, solid choice.
She is such a sweetheart and it's clear she loves what she does. Assignments are VERY straightforward and easy to do (make sure it makes sense). Class can be boring sometimes but that is expected for core requirement classes (+ she involves the class too so its not just her lecturing). 100% recommend (this is the pog to take froshies)
By far the easiest option I've encountered for POG: you are graded only on three 10-page papers that are far easier than they sound. I have yet to talk to someone who didn't get an A on all of them. She is an absolute sweetheart, and truly cares about your mental health. The only reason she didn't get a 5 is because I frankly did not learn much.
An amazing choice for the problem of god core requirement. The class is graded by 3 10-page papers and as long as you put in some effort you will be fine. Professor Steenhuisen is also such an understanding professor and genuinely cares for her students' wellbeing. Take her if you can!
Fav prof of all time! Classes are boring and I dozed off a few times (it's not necessary to listen). The 10-page papers seem long and take time but they're definitely worth the A. Dr. S is the most beautiful-hearted and inspiring person and is super understanding and pushes back deadlines if necessary. Thought-provoking papers for self-reflection.
Professor Steenhuisen is a great professor! The class was very easy and the content was interesting to learn about. She values all of her students and provides clear grading criteria for the writing assignments. Easy A but also an engaging class.
An absolute icon. Take Professor Steenhuisen for POG!!!! She cares so much about her students. The 10 page papers sounds really scary, but they are not bad at all and grading criteria is super clear. BEST TEACHER AT GEORGETOWN!!
Amazing professor. Extremely knowledgeable, and talks about a wide breadth of religious information. Very caring about students; she really makes an effort to know everyone and takes major steps to accommodate mental health/general wellbeing. Take her at any cost.
Take professor Steenhuisen! She's an absolute gem, putting her students mental health first while maintaining a great learning environment. I'd take this class a million times more if I could!
Prof Steenhuisen is incredible, easily one of the best profs at Georgetown, very light grader and she made the subject matter very interesting
Amazing woman absolutely take her! Interesting, discussion based lectures. 3 ten page papers, but grading is very easy. Very supportive of students' mental health.
TAKEE HERR! By far my all time favorite professor I've ever had. She's not only enthusiastic about her work but she is also caring and emphasizes using her "mental-health" days which she gives to all of her students. We are graded on three 10-paged papers which seem like a lot but can be tackled and done very easily.
Great professor who cares a lot for her students. Participate more than you think you need to as feedback is not given about participation grades. Class was graded on two graded discussions, overall attendance and participation, and three papers. Really thought provoking class. She single handedly persuaded me to major in theology.
Prof. Steenhuisen is very sweet and very intelligent. There are a lot of interesting readings and we had a lot of interesting class discussions. I wouldn't say the class was life-changing, but it was certainly a great experience. The papers are meant to be very manageable and stress-free but make sure you get to 10 pages!
Prof. Steenhuisen is amazing; she cares about her students and is clearly very knowledgeable in her field. Graded by three papers which are generally easy to write and on interesting topics. Her emailed feedback is so detailed and truly shows that she reads and values student opinions. Definitely one of the best professors for pog!
She is super nice and cares about each student's well being. She lets you take 3 mental health days a semester on top of her cancelling class a lot. Graded on some participation and 3 papers, which are graded easily and thoughtfully (just word vomit and you'll be fine). The class was boring especially after the first month, but she was great overall
Prof. Lauve is one of the best at GU, attendance is not mandatory (you get 3 mental health days you can use to skip class without affecting your attendance). You're only responsible for 3 essays, although they are 8 -10 pages long but trust her questions would have you wishing you had more pages. She's an easy going prof, choose her for POG
Professor Steenhuisen is an absolute gem - she puts student wellbeing first and makes the 10-page papers a breeze. unstuckstudy was a great study tool alongside the free textbook.
I found the subject matter of the course --why there is suffering in the world, evil, and forgiveness-- fascinating, but the readings were pretty basic and I didn't learn anything mind-blowing. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend this class as a super chill, easy POG class. It only consists only of 3 papers which are engaging and easy to do.
AN ICON! She is genuinely such a kind and caring person, and she wants each and every student to succeed. Creates such a welcoming and open class environment, wish I could take more classes with her! If you can get a spot in the class, TAKE IT!
Not much homework, just three long papers that do require planning and effort. Her grading is fair and clear, but you need to hit the marks and pay attention in class. Lectures are not demanding and very discussion-based which I enjoyed. Prof Steenhuisen is so kind and welcoming. she clearly loves what she does and is very experienced in the field.
Amazing and kind woman. Course is super easy, classes are all discussion-based. Three papers (& no tests) are graded very easily, just answer the questions and bring in your personal beliefs and experiences. Make sure to book as many office hours appointments with her, you'll talk about random stuff that's never course-related and you will love it!
Love her! Super caring, motherly professor. Class itself can be a bit dull at times, but it's a breeze - not much reading, no exams. Grades based on participation and three 10-page papers. She grades fairly and imo pretty easily; papers can be daunting but not bad if you space them out. She is so kind to students and delightful to talk to!
prof steenhuisen is single handedly the best prof ive had a gtown she is so knowledgable and understanding. in addition, i feel like i learned a lot and she is such an easy grader and really cares for her students. she builds in mental health days throughout the semester where there is no class and super generous with extensions. pls take her!!
Best POG choice out there. Not only an easy A, but lectures were SO thought provoking and changed my worldview entirely. Papers may seem like a lot, but are very do-able. One of my favorite classes.
She is my queen. Nicest person ever and such interesting classes. Really wants to hear what her students have to say and engage with them. HIGHLY recommend.
best prof i've had at georgetown! super sweet, amazing, and philosophical during office hours. really made you think about theology in an accessible but meaningful way. 3 papers, 10 page, double spaced and you can get by with skimming the readings. she will remember your name and care about your success as an individual. BEST POG PROF!
Steenhuisen is the best. Very kind and very knowledgable and passionate about the subject. Class is easy but very engaging and interesting, it's worth going to class. Offers mental health days and very supportive. Can't recommend enough
Perfect choice for your POG requirement! There's little homework, but even so, you learn and explore religious issues (e.g. evil) in a way accessible to all. Prof was very open minded and eager to discuss opinions. She was also super kind and interested in students in OH and outside of class. Papers easily doable if you participated in class.
I really enjoyed this class and Dr. Steenhuisen herself. She's chill and clearly interested in her students' lives outside of class. People have said she's an easy grader and I don't not agree, but you definitely have to put effort into your responses because grading criteria is not super clear. SET UP MEETINGS TO GO OVER CREDOS BEFORE THEY'RE DUE!
I loved Professor Steenhuisen for POG. So kind and caring, very little reading, and actually interesting in-class discussions. It's very easy to do well as long as you put some effort in.
