Took Women and the Law with. If you don't do well on the first exam, you're screwed the rest of the course. He even questioned my desire to be a law student! HA HA, I'm kicking ass and taking names in law school, and this course was disgustingly hard.
my mentor, my hero
Took 4 courses with him (3 A's & 1 B) and I still consider him the best I had at OSU. I also consider him my mentor and an outstanding academic counselor. Many years after graduations he still remembers me! AWESOME!
my hero, too. i want to be the same kind of teacher he is.
Awesome! One of best at OSU! You learn a lot and although the grading is not always easy, his comments are very helpful and detailed so you really progress as a student. Two very big thumbs up!
Good teacher, compares the material to everyday things. Fun guy
He's a great teacher for learning beyond the textbook, but TERRIBLY HARD! He's very willing to help, but it's almost not worth it b/c like someone else said "if you bomb the first test - YOU'RE SCREWED!" Good guy, but I won't take with him agai
Very smart, very nice, very helpful. The best prof I've had. His class takes a lot of studying, but he's always open to questions and really cares about the students.
Great professor, loves to teach and knows his stuff. The class isn't easy- but go to class and study the material and you'll be fine. And you're not screwed if you do poorly on the first midterm...you just need to get used to his tests.
One of the best organized lectures i've ever had. He relates the subjects to real life events well. He communicates all of the subject matter very clearly and makes it more interesting than it already is. there was a really big curve, not that you'd need it if you want to lecture, though.
Baum is probably the best prof. at OSU. Although many claim that he is hard, he expects you to actually read and engage with the material, which should be a requirement in upper-level college courses. If you are on the way to law school I definitely reccomend him. He wrote me a nice reccomendation!
easy good teacher
He is a nice guy and the class actually turned out to be interesting, I know a lot more about politics now!
Amazing professor, caring, helpful. Tests may be a bit difficult, but he sets up your notes in such a way to make it easily done after the first test. Always willing to help you, with in class of personal problems. Made my time at OSU wonderful with the mentorship he provided. Would love to take more classes with him. If you have the opportunity do take it; you won't regret it.
I had a lot of fun in his class! Great for office hours visits
very helpful prof, and obviously very humble about his familiarity with the subject. very tough grader!
Amazing Professor - I learned a ton in his class and always felt like he was available to help if I had any questions. The papers he assigns are difficult, but also very rewerding - as is the entire class
Very interesting lectures and material. Makes class interesting and relates cases to real world issues. Funny. Great teacher.
Great professor. Overall this is a research class. We had 2 shorter papers about theory that were designed to give us a foundation for the major term paper (about 20 pages). He is a very hard grader but interesting to talk to and is very helpful.
Professor Baum is one of the highest quality professors I've had thus far. Very impressed with test sheets, providing rationale for answers. He seemed genuinely interested in teaching and helping students. would highly reccomend Dr. Baum
I have had him for 519 and 514 and he is by far, the best professor this university has! Make sure you attend lectures and do the readings! He is very helpful in making sure the difficult material is clearly presented!
Dr. Baum is a nice guy and a great professor. He's clearly very passionate about the subject he teaches. He's difficult however, and this class is taught at a much more difficult level than others I've taken. There is a lot of work involved, and even though he's a hard grader, he's very fair. Overall, a good professor.
Good class very interesting lectures. Reading is helpful for the tests although I got by without it. Very nice guy and a fun and interesting class!
Great teacher! Can't wait to take another class with him. Always took time to answer questions in class, and very quick to respond via email. Grading system was 2 midterms and a final. Attendance isn't mandatory, but the lecture is so relevant to the test, that you have to attend. Definitely buy the book, but only read what he says.
Dr. Baum is a great, extremely knowledgeable professor who is willing to go the extra mile for his students to make sure they understand the concepts covered in class. 1 20 page paper is most of the grade.
Baum is the best teacher in this university. Do not hesitate to take his class- they always fill up very quickly. He's nice to everyone, regardless of how rude they are to him and he will go out of his way to help you. The grades are usually a midterm and a final- and he has his own curve system. Show up to class and take good notes and you'll be o
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR. Just about the nicest man you could meet and painfully intelligent about his subject. The very engaging lectures for this class contain a LOT of information but a vast majority is not required information. If you simply follow his directions and focus on what he says to you can do well in this course with little stress. Take it
Dr. Baum is the best professor at Ohio State. His intelligence, knowledge of the subject, and willingness to help students make his class a must take. Be prepared to come to class and do the readings. If you do, you'll be fine.
Damn, this class was a kick in the butt. Make no mistake, Baum is a hell of teacher but I thought I was gonna fail after I left the final (I didn't) Still, he is perhaps the finest professor here at OSU and one of the foremost scholars in his field in the entire country. Hard class, but a downright amazing teacher who will teach the crap out of you
Professor Baum was very interested in the subject matter and very helpful. Exams weren't too difficult but there were a lot of readings.
PS 521H was my favorite class ever. The class is based upon a 20-to-25-page paper predicting a Supreme Court decision. Prof. Baum is extremely helpful in providing background knowledge, theory, and sources to analyze Supreme Court cases. You will learn a lot in this class.
Great professor, really knows his stuff. Tests are hard but if you attend class and TAKE NOTES you will do fine. I recommend taking him.
Prof. Baum is a really nice guy. POLITSC 519 is the toughest political science class I've taken to date. But I can tell you, after Baum I won't forget a single detail from any of the cases we studied.
lectures are very organized, and stay on task. Baum is very good at communicating material. Exams are tough, but you will get a lot out of the class if you attend lectures, take notes and do the readings. I hated it at the time, but now I see how much I learned from that class. Definitely recommend it-- if you're willing to work.
The best professor I've had at OSU. He is really funny, and is willing take questions and turn them into great class discussions. I learned a ton in this class. It's not super easy, but if you take good notes, and just memorize those, you can definitely get an A. You just need to go to lectures:)
Very clear. Three written exams with a clear outline that acts as exam reviews. Highly knowledgeable and very nice guy.
Professor Baum is honestly awesome. He is funny, witty and extremely passionate about teaching. His class was all spoken lecture, so attendance was mandatory if you wanted a good grade. He also tends to be a hard grader, but if you go to class and take notes, an A is no problem.
Absolutely fantastic professor. He's one of the nicest professors I've ever had, and really has true expertise of the Supreme Court and all issues surrounding it. There is a fair bit of reading, but if you go to every class the exams are not too difficult.
Great professor. Excellent lectures, very clear. Exams are all essay and can be very challenging. Some topics can be confusing and Prof. Baum does a great job to make them clear. However, again, the exams are not easy.
Amazing Professor. Very knowledgeable. Kind of difficult exams, but extremely helpful if you need it.
Just to add to what everyone else has said, Professor Baum is awesome. Definitely the best professor I've had here. I took this class because I had previously taken his Civil Liberties class which was great as well. He explains things very well, and always makes time to meet students if you want. Tests should be fine if you take good notes.
I loved this class and would take it again in a heartbeat. That being said, the class itself was extremely difficult. All of his lectures are spoken, so be sure to take notes. Do not skip class because you will fail the exam, if you do. He is a tough grader, but he curves his exams. Go to office hours-he is extremely helpful and willing to clarify.
Tough class. Grading is rigorous. But, the teaching is excellent. If you want to get at least a B, you must read the textbook and follow the study guide.
The best political science professor I have had in my three years at OSU. Would definitely take another course by him.
Lectures are straightforward and so are the exams. Do the readings and take good notes in class and this class should not be any trouble. 3 exams and two chances to earn extra credit as well. Lectures are interesting and he answers questions constantly to help clarify the course.
One of my favorite professors at Ohio State. I have based my schedule around what other courses I can take with him. This was one of my hardest classes ever, but I learned more than I thought I could in one class. If you have the chance, take a class with Professor Baum. There also wasn't a textbook, just online readings.
Three exams (30%, 35%, 35%) and two opportunities to earn extra credit (up to 5%). Go to class and take detailed notes. Take notes on the cases you read. Study these two sets of notes and an A is easy. The class is difficult because the sheer amount of material covered. Baum is clear, friendly, and interested in his students. A great mentor
Great professor. Genuinely cares about students, tests are all essays but if you take good notes in class you should get an A
He was one of my favorite professors I've had at OSU. Be ready to take diligent notes if you want to succeed, but as long as you pay attention you should be fine. The material is interesting and it seems like he genuinely wants all of his students to do well.
One-of-a-kind professor. Makes material accessible, and always more than willing to answer any questions you may have. You NEED to pay attention when you go to lecture, as the exams will sometimes cover material that is only discussed in-class. I'd recommend him to people of all majors, but Professor Baum is a MUST if you're a polisci major.
He is probably one of the nicest professors at the whole university. He is very caring and will help you with anything. The midterms took a little getting used to but he provides materials to help. Just keep up with the readings and go to class.
Prof. Baum has to be one of the absolutely best professors at Ohio State. I came into the class with a mild interest in civil liberties and just trying to get my PoliSci GE, but it's honestly one of my favorite classes to go to. Exams can be tough, but if they are he'll admit it and scale appropriately. An absolute joy to learn from, & funny too.
Professor Baum is by far one of the best professors I have had the privilege to come across. He is clearly passionate about the material he teaches, respects each students as an individual with valued thoughts, and is very amiable and funny. Definitely attend class and take meticulous notes. This class is totally worth it, learned so much.
Professor Baum is by far one of my favorite professors at Ohio State. He makes his lectures incredibly interesting and does his best to be sure students understand his points. He was extremely helpful when I went to his office hours for clarifications and makes it a goal to get to know his students. If you are a poli sci major, take his classes!
He's very auditory and doesn't post his slides online but he's one of the best professors I've ever had. he's very engaging and passionate about the subject. he also is objective when discussing controvercial topics
A king. Only spoken lectures which is kind of difficult at first but you get used to it. He puts guides for each lecture on Carmen that are basically study guides for the exams. He really wants his students to succeed and is willing to help in whatever way you can. Every poli sci student should have to take him.
SHOW UP TO CLASS AND U WILL PASS All lectures are spoken which can be tough. Best professor i've had though, hands down.
I was terrified when I heard about the big final paper (20-25) pages. but trust me, it's not that bad, you do 10 of those pages halfway in the year. He is one of the most knowledgable profs at osu, he really leads the field in SCOTUS things. very kind and more than happy to help with anything. I would recommend this class to anyone.
He's such a friendly guy, but I found his class to be difficult, despite never skipping and taking a lot of notes. Only grades are 3 exams, and we needed to know so much specific information for each exam that it was pretty overwhelming. Lectures are no slides, just him talking and writing on the board. Class was tough but you learn A LOT.
Lawrence Baum might be the best professor I've had at OSU. While the class is totally lecture based, the way he presents the material is so interesting and you can tell how much he knows and loves what he does. I would suggest studying early because if you do the topic guides and know them well, you'll be fine on the exams!
Professor Baum was likely the most knowledgable and accessible professor I've had. The class was comprised of 3 papers, all research-based. However, you're given the time and resources to get it done, and he is there every step of the way to help. I wish I had another class with him because he is one of the kindest and smartest professors I've had.
He does not use any kind of slides or another presentation tool in class, he talks at you for 1:20 straight. This class was also graded solely on exams, which is not something I enjoy. I found recording the lectures to be somewhat helpful, but overall was not a fan of him at all. He is also confusing, sometimes going back on what he said before.
Professor Baum's class isn't "easy" but you will learn a lot. I truly feel lucky to have been able to take 2 classes with him. You won't meet a professor at OSU that's more knowledgeable, kind, and caring. And he's hilarious.
Baum is one of my favorite professors at OSU because he cares a lot about his students. I learned a lot in this course, and not just surface-level content but a deeper understanding of the Supreme Court. I recommend recording lectures because while they are engaging, they are long, and they are pretty much your only source of class content.
Dr. Baum is one of the best professors at OSU. Truly one of the nicest, most knowledgeable, and helpful professors I've had. Not an easy A but wont make you cry yourself to sleep. Not an overwhelming amount of work but covers a lot of material. He does not use any notes and lecture is completely oral, which is an adjustment but helped me focus.
Dr. Baum is one of the most kind and caring professors I've had at OSU. He does not use lecture slides, which is an adjustment at first, but is very engaging in class. His course was no cakewalk and the material bordered on dull at times, but it wasn't bad if you pay attention and study for exams.
Professor Baum is a fantastic instructor but also an incredibly tough grader. Class is made up entirely of exams, so don't fail any because otherwise, you'll fail the course. He also offers little to no extra credit, so don't forget to prep for exams because they're your only source of redemption.
Prof. Baum is the best professor Ive ever had at OSU as far as what I learned in the class but the class was not easy! I loved the content, but there were only 3 exams, completely essay-based and timed. I had to rewatch lectures several times to get all the information at times. It was tough, but worth it. I feel like I know so much more now!
Professor Baum is one of the most kind, helpful professors I have ever had. The class is comprised of just three essays. They are 5, 10, and 20 pages and the 20 page is worth 70% of your grade. It seems intimidating, but he prepares you really well to do it and you will learn a ton. No attendance, but if you miss class you're screwed for the essays
Dr. Baum is my favorite professor I have had so far at OSU. He cares so much for his students and is very passionate about the content he teaches. This class is tough but he works with you and makes sure that you learn. Although I received a B I believe I learned more in his course than any of the others I took this term.
Dr. Baum was incredible, a 6/5. He always assumed he explained something wrong instead of getting mad at students for not understanding, he let us be curious without letting "poli sci kids" pull us off on a tangent, and he pulled from current events to teach material. The class was tough, lecture-heavy, and lots of reading for sure, but worth it.
My favorite class I've ever taken was the one I took with him. He doesn't take attendance (though he notices those who show up) but GO TO CLASS. He's a great lecturer and if you know your lectures and cases you'll be fine . Sit towards the front to be one of Larry's favorites. You'll just want him to like you. It'll just make you feel good.
By far one of my favorite professors at OSU. His class had challenging material, but none of the assignments or exams are extremely difficult and he is great about implementing feedback. He also gave an easy extra credit assignment. I wish I had taken more classes with him while at OSU.
Dr. Baum is a fantastic professor. The final paper is long, but you will build up to it in your other two papers. By the end of the class you will have a comprehensive understanding of the court and a paper as a reference for your writing abilities. He does his best to connect with all students. I highly suggest taking even if you are not honors.
If you have a chance to take a class with Dr. Baum. Do it. He is incredibly kind and cares so much for his students. Any and all of your questions will be answered in depth and he is very accommodating. The content can be a lot but if you follow the syllabus, you'll be fine
This is one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. While the class is very difficult (beware if you just want a grade booster), he is really passionate about the subject and I learned a lot more about the Supreme Court. The papers are long and difficult to write (20 page final paper), but it will turn out alright if you put in the work!
Great guy. Loved 4136 with him, so I took this class. Anyone with any interest in the Supreme Court should take him; you will learn so much. This class wasn't as good; I'd already learned about a lot of material in his other course. Still valuable research and writing skills. He provides copious guidelines for the paper. Do that and you'll be ok.
Lawrence is a great guy and the best professor in this department. I have taken his two classes and I can say they will humble you. Not an easy A at all. Go for every class and write down every word he says. Highly recommend if you see law school in your future. It is very likely you will not get an A in this class. If that matters to you skip this
Professor Baum was amazing. If you are seriously considering law school, I definitely recommend taking one of his classes. The entire class is very lecture and exam heavy, but if you truly engage in class and with the material, you will do just fine. I learned more in this class than I learned in any other political science classes combined.
Professor Baum is one of the most caring professors at OSU. He is extremely willing to help outside of class and his lectures are incredibly interesting. If you have a chance to take one of his classes, do it!
One of the best
Baum is no doubt one of my favorite professors at OSU; he is kind, easily reachable, and funny! His class was graded by three long papers (the final is around 30 pages), with his own grading scale, but he wants everyone to succeed in his class. If you're struggling on a paper, reach out; he will give you extensive help and guide you all the way.
Dr. Baum is a fantastic professor and his Supreme Court decision making course was one of my favorites at OSU. One should be prepared for a difficult class with lots of research, but he is super helpful, gives great feedback, and wants to have students do well.
