He teaches very well. very good teacher.

Not easy, but very fun. Cool teacher to have. You must read all the material. He tries to make it fun. Very liberal. Knows what he is talking about.
Calling this man a "professor" in an absolute farce. This man might as well be a democratic spokes person. When I pay for my education, I wish the experience was an objective jaunt through academia; even in PoliSci this is possible. Get a clue M
very fair grader, test straight from the study guide. reading ensures good grade. Does his best to make the incredibly boring subject of political parties entertaining with activities and some jokes. funny nice guy that cares about students and politics.
Ok, Yes he is Liberal (I am conservative). Very good political science professor however. One of the better instructors in the department. Good enough grader. He is the real deal. I enjoyed him and would take him again.
Not good. As another student here said, I'm not paying for his political views. I'm paying to learn about the subject matter. About 99% of the PS professors are very liberal, which is a damper for those of us who are conservative. Just grin and bear it.
He knows his stuff. He tries to make it fun and interesting. He's a pretty good grader. He has good energy, if your considering taking him in the evening he won't bore you to death.
Not only is he an amazing lecturer, he's also willing to take the time to help you understand the material. It's not often you can take a class and have such an intellectual, interesting not to mention "Hot" teacher. Believe me.. his classes are
I went into the class hearing that Becker was boring, but I thought he was great. He made the subject matter interesting and easy to understand.
Dr. Becker is a great professor. His syllabus and lecturing were both very clear. He may slant to the left a bit but he's not a militant out-of-line liberal type professor. He is very objective and totally fair. I recommend him for any class he teaches.
Becker is a great teacher, he has a great sence of humor and is very educated in his field. His class is easy if you study for the tests, also a die hard democrat but he is open to other people's political views.
He went out of his way to be non partisan, so Im not sure what these other posters are complaining about. Hes a decent teacher, but he asks some inane questions on his finals.

he makes political science fun with his ocassional puns. plus he also kinda cute.
This class would be 100x better if it was smaller - there's over 200 people in it, and more 1 on 1 attention would be awesome, especially w/ the subject matter being so interesting.
Very easy class. Just show up and take down notes. u dont even have to reado/ the books .. test based on notes of of lecture plu she puts them online so if u mimiss a class u can get them. Easy A and very intersting classs. Its cool how he will use video clip f the simpsons and jon stewart to teach the subject matter. i highly recommend him
READ THE TEXT! YOU MUST READ THE TEXT AND SHOW UP TO CLASS. SOME QUESTIONS ON THE EXAM ARE FROM HIS LECTURES, SO YOU MUST SHOW UP. HIS EXAMS ARE STRAIGHT FOWARD, BUT YOU MUST READ THE TEXT AND PAY ATTENTION TO HIS LECTURES. A GREAT PROFESSOR WITH SENSE OF HUMOR. *RECOMMENDED* PLUS, HE IS CUTE, IN A ADORABLE WAY. BUT GREAT CLASS & PROFESSOR!
Becker is a great professor. Be sure to read the material and pay attention to his lectures, or else it will not be too easy to BS your way through. He does go out of his way to be non partisan, he is a fair grader, and he has personally gone out of his way to help us students get a refund from einstruction.com
Use the online resources he provides on his website, they are very helpful for the exams. 5 exams, drops the lowest, plus the final. Do not even have to read the book if you study everything online which is easier. Pretty cool guy, in-class videos and clips keep the class awake. But you do have to study and know the material to get a A or B.
VERY HARD... the damn "clicker" was sent from hell, i had perfect attendance, i took notes, studied and still found it a very difficult class. The only plus is that we watched Daily Show clips in class...
damn clicker!! 5 exams plus final, not the easiest class, overall wouldnt recommend unless its required.
FOR ALL THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS, YOU GUYS ARE JUST MAD BECAUSE YOU ARE ALL JUST LAZY. YES, BECKER IS A LITTLE HARD, HOWEVER, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS READ THE TEXT. SIMPLE AS THAT. YOU'RE IN COLLEGE TO LEARN AND TO BE CHALLENGED. THIS COURSE DEALS W/A LOT OF READING. SO KEEP UP, ATTEND CLASS, AND YOU'LL PASS WITH AT LEAST A B.
The weekly quizzes were kind of a pain, but they did force you to keep up with the readings. There were two in-class presentations, which weren't too hard... and one paper at the end of the term. For a night class, I never got sleepy... so that MUST be a good sign, huh? All in all, I really enjoyed the class.
5 tests and a final, but he drops the lowest test score. His class is very fun. He shows clips from The Simpsons and from the Daily Show and a bunch of others. To do good in his class you don't have to study that much. Just study a couple hours before the test and you'll do fine. I studied about 2 or 3 hours the day before the test and I got a B+
I dont know why he has a :) next to his name but he straight up is the worst professor on that campus. His tests are not easy and he is so damn boring...everyone i know that took him with me had problems passing.
Very easy class and extremely fun. inputs simpsons and daily show clips to help with the text. u dont have to read the book. just go to class and take notes. and even the notes are online. which is cool if u miss a class. total of 5 tests (drops the lowest one) and a final. very easy. EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE HIS CLASS. EASY A
He's a pretty easy techer. All you have to do is read the chapters, and listen to his lectures. The thing that sucks is that you have to buy a clicker for the class, and get it registered, It costs $35 for both; it's only used for attendance and to participate it class. I recommd him!
worst professor, SO DAMN BORING! STUPID CLICKER! college is about choosing to goto class not making attendance mandatory to stupid boring pointless lectures about politics. becker is boring, his lectures sucks, the only interesting part is when he shows video clips, other than that, the class waste the biggest waste of my life.

I did not like him. He talked all during class which made me bored and I didnt learn anything. Pointless to go to class so when I got home I had t oteach myself if I wanted a good grade. Tests are hard even when I studied everything. Do not recommend.
AWESOME TEACHER!!! We all have to take PolySci, so take it with Becker. Great guy, funny clips throughout his lectures, very interesting class. I never got bored, never didn't like him. Study a little and it'll be all good.

nice guy, but SO !!! all he did was talk, no student/teacher interaction. His tests were okay except for the essay part...he wanted SPECIFICS so you pretty much gotta memorize what you are going to write, don't take notes cuz its all available on his website (doesn't matter....useless information)...did i mention he was SO BORING??
This professor makes a REALLY boring subject somewhat entertaining. Difficult feat. If you like John Stewart, the Colbert Report, and the Simpsons, you will love the supplimentary video clips he gives. I did well, could have done better If I studied, but overall enjoyed Professor Becker.
Ppl. who think he's boring either don't care about American politics or are just too lazy to learn. He's super democratic, but he doesn't shove ideals down your throat like other profs at CSUN. Tries to be as fair as possible. (I am convservative) He knows his stuff. My advice: GO TO CLASS, LISTEN to the lectures and take advantage of online notes
Material is boring but he uses clips from South Park, The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report. He takes attendance via the clicker. He has strict rules for the class. He gives 6 exams throughout the semester (avg. 40 questions, final was 100 questions). If you are proactive in your education you can do well in the class.
Nice guy. Tried to make poli sci fun by showing daily show, colbert report, south park, simpsons, etc. clips. A LOT of info to know for the quizzes. 5 quizzes and drops the lowest quiz score. Final is cumulative. No essays; all m/c questions on quizzes/final.
Becker is one of the few prof who can always be found in his office Anyone who is remotely familiar with current political events will appreciate his humor. He is engaging & encourages interaction. He is one of the few professors who is open to students questioning his personal beliefs and encourages us to develop our own thoughts. highly recommend
Come to class, take notes, and take 5 tests. You get to drop the lowest one. The only annoying thing was the clickers that were mandatory. You had to "click" in the first few minutes of class or else he didnt know you were there. And if you forgot your clicker, or your battery died, or whatever (and you WERE in class) it didnt matter. Your absent
He is a good lecturer, but he is a hard grader and goes after grammer and essay writing skills instead of content.
HE IS AWSOME! HE IS AWSOME! HE IS AWSOME! HE IS AWSOME! HE IS AWSOME! HE IS AWSOME!The only prof. with high tech. lectures. I Loved the class. Take his class if you are interested in poly sci. You will not regre taking his class. notes are easy and available online. HE IS THE BEST!
Great teacher! I dreaded sitting through a 4&1/2 hour pols lec twice a week during summer, but he made it barable and even interesting. He uses a variety of media as well as relevent topics of discussion. More important than the loads of reading is studying the online tests and his lecutre notes to do well. He's funny and even cute in a geeky way.
Aside from being cute, he can be kind of vague in respects to what he wants on your paper. Don't BS it cuz he'll lower your grade. Make sure you take good court notes because he does look at them and it helps your grade in the end.
He loves to teach a HUGE audience, but the subject is easy. Just go to class every day, take notes, and read the book PLZ! I was too lazy to read that book but I still passed with a C+. He will make you go to sleep, but get used to it.
he is boring... you have to show up everyday must study read the book and understand it... his test are difficult... the median score for his class throught the semester was a 65% because no one got what he was teaching
Okay, so the class is basically taking a multiple choice test at the end of the semester. Make sure you know the book pretty well to take the test. I would say it's a pretty pointless class. I guess an easy lower divison.
If you are the type of student that doesn't show up to class and doesn't keep up with readings dont't take this class. Lots of reading, but it's interesting. 2 Tests, two short papers. He gives an extensive review for tests. Nice guy, good lecturer, fair grader.
Must know info for the poli sci major. Prof is passionate about subject. Imparts info well. Demanding class. Short papers and essay mid and final. Requires analysis of info to do well. Must read all text and articles. Work hard and get an "A." Recommended.
Easy on the eyes. I had a bit of a crush on him. If you take notes in class and write down everything he says you will get an on A on his tests. Just bring your laptop to class. You need to do the same in your paper. There isn't a lot of class participation which is great. Just like an undergraduate lecture if you like that sort of thing.
Aside from the clips of South Park and the daily show, the class lectures were pretty boring to me. He uses powerpoints and has them online, they are pretty clear and helpful. However, he doesn't give study guides and there is a lot of things to study for exams (5)!! As for the tests they aren't easy, you need to read the book and notes.
Used clips from South park, and other funny cartoon shows, which really helped the boring-ness of the class. It was a huge class(100+ people). Just study for the tests from the book and his powerpoints(which he puts online for you) and you should be fine.
It is a lecture type of class. He is full of knowledge and really tries to make the class interesting with fun clips. Great prof for graduates... interactive and teaches using current events. VERY INTERESTING class. Final and a paper- not bad at all. He gives you a study guide for final and all material on final have been discussed in class. RECOM
Becker is a great professor. Straightforward, knowledgeable, interactive, easy going. Tests administered online. Keeps workload to a minimum. Although poli sci is a dull subject, Becker makes his lectures as interesting as possible. A+
It is a very big class, so no interaction with professor unless you go out of your way. Intersting class. But make sure you read! The tests are manipulative, you need to read and show up to class to get his lecture notes. Also stay alert with the media and current events. Cool professor, he also doesnt let anyone in late. He will kick you out.
Very clear and concise. Tries to make Poli Sci as interesting as possible. It's a huge class but always be on time because he will kick you out. The tests are online and they are not that difficult and you get plenty of time to do them. Recommend him take this class!
easy class. four exams on moodle and a final. drops the lowest score. take notes, read each chapter and youll do good! got an A :)
The course material is very easy, since it's basic political science. Professor Becker is a very nice man and gives very straightforward yet very entertaining lectures. Anything graded is administered online and scored by a computer, however, the exams accurately measure the material covered in the textbook and in the lectures. Recommended.
As long as you keep up with the reading and come to class you should do well, the tests were online, and the homework was easy. The final is based on the past tests, and final few chapters.
He uses a lot of tv show clips which makes the class entertaining. He can be a hard grader but is very nice and respectful towards students. He really likes it if you speak up and give your opinion.
Very organized, and great power points. Class can get kind of boring sometimes, esp. if its a 3 hour class. He is a much harder grader than the other Poli Sci professors - you have to be able to write, no BS-ing! Gives AWESOME test review. Write indepth, skim the text, study the power points, and think CRITICALLY about EVERYTHING & get an A.
This class was not the most exciting class out there. THe teacher does his powerpoints and sometimes rushes through them because he 'needs to stay on schedule'. He does not post powerpoints online- he says its the same as everything in the book- so you really need to read the books to pass the exams.
This class was great! Really interesting and he explains everything well. As long as you listen and write notes you are pretty much ready for the tests!
even though attendance is not mandatory, if you attend every class and listen to the lecture without doing the reading you are guaranteed a B in the class. Pretty nice professor. his lectures are pretty well organized. its best to copy his notes and study off of those for the midterm and finals. i would take him again.
Although PolySci is a pretty dull subject, he likes to keep it fun with funny video clips. He is really respectful of opinions and loves when people speak up. Go to class, take notes, and do most of the reading. I just skimmed and passed with a B+. Overall Great Professor!Definitely recommend! :)
A very cool and nice guy who totally respects his students. He's not the easiest grader but his discussions are very interesting. He uses a lot of funny tv show clips to illustrate his lectures. You will leave this class having more respect for every president....seriously.
Interesting class, but he rushes through his powerpoints and there is a ton of reading necessary, especially to pass the exams. I'm selling mine if he's still using the same books" "American Gov't Power and Purpose" 11th ed: Lowi, and "Governing California:In the 21st century" 2nd ed: Anagnoson. please let me know. email:[email protected]
First, let me say that this is by no means an easy class. However, if you put in the effort and time you will learn a lot and most likey do very well. Dr. Becker overall is a avery fair professor and he expects you to WORK!
I don't why students think he is hard..... he is extremely easy. He keep the class upbeat and is very interesting in what he is talking about. He does surveys, watch the daily show & mini clips to demostrate his point. Great class. Be sure to show up for class because the test includes what he is talking about but also read the book.
You really need to love pol sci, he was a nice guy and tried to keep it as entertaining as possible. you need to to prepare yourself with lots of reading, couple of assignments but not to bad, just lots of reading. all test are online. Good Luck.
DONT BE LATE. The class consists of a lot of reading and all of the exams are online. the class is pretty boring (which is expected) but he includes some clips in his PPT which are fun. also make sure you're a fast writer, he changes the slides quickly. there are a few one page reports but theyre fairly easy. He's a great professor, very smart.
His class was REALLY boring. I loved Public Policy prior to taking this course. MPA650, graduate course. He clearly teaches to undergrads. He's also not hot. He had no personality either, which made the dry subject a nightmare. Good luck staying awake if you have him. He can also be vague when giving feeback, which doesn't help. Glad it's OVER!!
Public Policy (MPA650) ? a graduate course. This was the worst experience of my entire academic career. Mr. Becker is boring, not interested in student feedback and lacks a sense of humor. His teaching style made an interesting topic almost impossible to handle. This class was drawn out, stagnate and filled with ?busy work.?
This is a very boring class. Becker did not do anything to make it interesting. If you want to sleep and waste weeks of your life, take this class. He expects you to know exactly what he knows. If you do not have the tacit knowledge that he has you will be graded as such. Stay away! Graduate class MPA650.
He claims that attendance is not mandatory but he makes a big deal about missing his class. When you ask him a question he gives you vague answers. His lectures are boring and he treats you like an underclassmen. He needs to stick to basic Political Science classes and not teach graduate level courses.
He's awesome, sexy, and the best prof ever!
Dont know why people are rating him harshly. He's a good professor!
Worst instructor yet. No room for discussion or creative thought. Prof. Typically wants his own thoughts repeated back to him. Assignements are ridiculously crowded into 8 weeks and the workload is unmanageable. His instructions for assignments are vague & feedback is snarky & unhelpful. Halfway through the course and I can't wait til its over.
He is not an easy instructor, his feedback is vague and not too helpful. Cant wait for this class to be over! The exams are ridiculous, I don't recommend him at all! He expects you to know what he knows and teaches as if the class is for a PhD.
This professor was aweful! He was not clear in the subject matter and expected the students to teach themselves. He was not able to discuss topics at a State or local level, but kept defaulting to ObamaCare as examples. Out of touch with local government.
This professor was so frustrating. He lectured, but not in a way that brought the subject to life for the students. At the end of the course, many students were still unsure of the subject matter. He had no concept of real world applications at the state or local level. He continually referenced ObamaCare as his only example for policy formulation.
I learned so much from Professor Becker. There was a ton of challenging reading that required time and energy. Success in class required effort. However, the reward for the effort was high - not an easy A - but if you're willing to work for your education, and you should be, this is a great class.
Class was tough, too much information to cram into 8 weeks. Feedback was always negative. Was always snarky when contacting him for questions even though he constantly would encourage you to ask him questions and use him as a reference. Would not recommend him as a professor, worst 8 weeks of my life, still traumatized.
He was the best teacher I have had in a looooong time! Very excited and knowledgeable about the topic and his enthusiasm was infectious. He made me interested in a subject I dreaded by instilling humorous clips from pop culture television. There is a good bit of reading, so if you are lazy, pick another professor.
Look, his class isn't exactly a rock concert, but he's a solid professor who knows his stuff. If you are interested in the subject matter and come ready to learn a little something, you'll do fine.
If you are a political science major and really want to learn about the subject, beckers class is for you. If you are lazy you will not do well
Dr. Becker helped me so much! I sent him my papers before they were due, and he gave me edits and advice. He also adjusted to the coronavirus shutdown quickly and effectively. He was kind and willing to work with me on material outside of class. He knows the material and cares about it. Ask questions, and he will happily answer them.
He adjusted to the Coronavirus crisis quickly and effectively. Dr. Becker suggests edits to papers if you bring/send them to him early. His feedback is clear. He gets things back to you on time, toooverall nice guy.
My only real criticism of this class is that for the exam and final paper he expects you to answer very vague questions in a very specific manner. The exam and final paper make up 85% of your grade, so if you don't understand the questions or how to answer, keep asking him to clarify. He was very good about answering emails and gave good feedback.
Not the most exciting person in the world, but he's a real CHAD. Honestly just pay attention and you'll pass. The lectures weren't really mandatory, but I recommend you still attend them. I'm pretty gifted in government classes, so I had no trouble really, but many people seemed to struggle on his exams. You'll be fine, he knows his stuff.
Professor Becker is a solid, nice guy. Extremely clear and thorough. My only complaint is he didn't give the students a full two hours for the final, and many other tests we had limited time, but he took students into consideration and made the questions shorter to provide assistance. He's a very laid back, respectable man. Very safe choice!
I learned more from watching YouTube videos on the topic because his teaching style doesn't make it interesting, he made it difficult to learn. He wasn't very clear on what he wants on the paper and gives you a bad grade for it. He doesn't give you copies of the slides or record Zoom classes, so if your computer freezes, good luck. Stay away.
He is a tough grader for all the wrong reasons because, like others have said, he isn't clear on what he wanted to see on the papers so goodluck on that. Midterm/final essay is timed for an hour but doesn't give you the topic beforehand so if it's a rushed essay, you'll be graded accordingly. I'd take another professor if you care about your grade.
He sets you up for failure. His instructions for the paper were very vague and when you don't do what he expects, he'll give you a lower grade. Exams were stressful: 3 questions (2 short answers and 1 big essay question) that is limited to 65-70 minutes. He doesn't give you the essay question prior to the exam but expects a perfect essay.
I was really interested in this class but he made me regret taking it. I never learned anything at all. Like one person here said, there are tons of videos on YouTube that'll help you better understand the topic. I always leave his class even more confused. The subject was not supposed to be hard, he made it seem like it. He made me feel stupid.
Not sure why Professor Becker received harsh feedback for his 446 class. He wasn't CRYSTAL CLEAR about what he looked for in the midterm/finals but he's definitely not a tough grader either. If you follow his instructions and reference the readings well, you can definitely get at least a high B. Nice guy too. I'd definitely take him again.
Prof Becker is accessible to the class, answers questions, provides possible test questions beforehand. The group project is well organized and does not overwhelm the coursework. His class does require a lot of short answer essay type writing and research but what is being asked is clear and succinct. Attendance is not mandatory but you must watch.
The lectures were long and dense, they covered a lot of material that was on the tests. Aside from being long, the lectures were boring. I honestly recommend studying the material with classmates outside of class since sitting through the lectures and doing the readings won't get you far.
A lot of information is involved in professor becker's classes but everything he covers goes with what the class is about. His tests are not the easiest but he provides a study guide that has all of the questions he might ask. Best to study with classmates before hand. Tests seem intimidating at first, but it'll be fine if you studied beforehand.
